After a tragic loss five years ago, Sally Overby becomes an Attorney in Atlanta. She convinces herself that all she'll ever need again is her young son, David, and her life as an attorney. Until one day, Colin Dean barges back into her life and promptly blows her safe world apart, driving her crazy as only a guy she'd had a "school girl crush" on can.

Sally is wary to love deeply. Only, with every loving look Colin gives her plus every sweet kiss, as the attraction between them sparks, she can’t help but wonder if she’s met the one she should be with. And although Colin didn’t realize his life was going to change so quickly, amazingly, he isn’t the least bit interested in fighting that change. Instead, he’s gearing up for a different fight altogether. The one for Sally’s heart.

Will Colin be able to convince her that's it safe to love him... and that forever isn't really out of reach?

The Eyes of Love is a novella… so you can enjoy it in just one day!

Excerpt

A hush fell over the room for a moment as Stephanie appeared with Jazz trailing behind her. She was wearing a skin tight black dress with stiletto heels which was typical Stephanie fashion. She wanted nothing more than to be the center of attention like she always had been.

Without missing a beat, Stephanie walked straight over to Colin. Sally was shocked.

"Hello, Colin..." she purred as she ignored Sally completely. "You look sexy tonight, as always." She smiled seductively as Colin looked away. "Who's your friend?"

"None of your business, Steph. Leave me alone."

"Oohhh.... Did I touch a nerve, sweetie?" she asked as she reached out to touch his chest.

"Don't touch me, Stephanie. I'm warning you. Why don't you go back to Jazz?"

"Oh. Jazz. Boring..." she sang. "We're not together anymore, just so you know..." she whispered in a husky voice. Colin held onto Sally's hand for dear life. She had to do something.

"Stephanie, don't you remember me?" she asked grinning from ear to ear as she slid into Colin's side. He put his arm around her and stared down in shock at what she was about to say.

"I don't know you," Stephanie said looking her up and down.

"Wow. Age is really doing a number on your brain," Sally said.

"Who are you?" Stephanie snapped. Jazz stood a few feet back obviously trying to hear the conversation.

"I'm your worst nightmare," Sally growled as she came almost nose to nose with Stephanie, her attorney public speaking skills getting ready to display themselves. She pulled the name tag from her purse without breaking eye contact and held it up. "You see, I'm the nerd that you and your cronies bullied through high school."

About the Author:
Angelina Rose has wanted to write ever since she could hold a pencil. The first daughter of immigrant parents, Angelina had her head buried in books, lost in a world of heroes, heroines and exotic places.

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Angelina's author career.

"I awoke in the ICU... I had been unconscious for several days," Angelina says.

In 2010, Angelina had a long stint in hospital following her involvement in a motor vehicle accident: the longest time off work (as a Registered Nurse), she'd ever had in her life!

It was then she took up pen and paper and started to write again, just as she had done when she was a child. She wrote four short fiction stories for young adults, entered them in several competitions, and managed to win three first prizes!

After happily dipping her toes into writing those short fiction stories for young adults, Angelina has now authored four books in a new "Mill Creek Crossing Romance" series... contemporary romance intended for adults.

The "Starting Over Series" is another contemporary romance series she wrote about a subject she knows well... nurses and their love life. At a recent reunion of her graduating class, she could not help but notice how the same girls would group together and laugh, chat, and even shed some tears over their lives since graduating. Many of the girls had divorced... so Angelina thought "what if a group of the nurses came up with a plan to meet in two years and have a new love story to share?" Then the first story in the series was born.

There is always a story running around in her head. A man with thick dark hair, gray-blue eyes, with an engaging smile and a quick wit... or a girl crying over a broken relationship. She finds herself talking to these characters during her day: when she's doing dishes, or bathing babies at the hospital. These characters crop up on days at the beach or on walks through the neighborhood. This is how the stories start to grow.

Angelina's mother was an author, so Angelina grew up with a love of words and stories. If she wasn't writing a short story about something that took her fancy, her head was buried in books... reading, reading, reading, as her brother constantly told her...

When she's not spending time with her good-looking man, or quality time with her laptop, she's working at the hospital, hanging out with her family and friends, or walking her two dogs around the neighborhood. Angelina spends as much time as she can traveling, then coming home and including some of those adventures in her stories.

Angelina really loves to hear from her readers and she invites you to connect with her on Facebook or Twitter as she interacts with her readers! Find out more information about her and her books at her website

Ameera Unveiled by Kathleen Varn

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Kathleen will be awarding a $10 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A special thanks to Kathleen for stopping by to chat with us.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

When I started Ameera Unveiled, women’s humor picked me. I’m the type of person who likes to find a chuckle even in stressful situations. I’m the oldest of four daughters—one of them is my Irish twin. Being military dependents, we were nomadic which bonded us together a little more than the average family. Because I had the privilege of strong positive female sister bonds, I value the same quality as an adult with my girlfriends. Through my career as a legal assistant for an adoption attorney, I picked up social worker skills. I’ve seen so many women take some hard knocks—sometimes with a support system, sometimes not. I think my writing style attempts to fulfill the scriptural reference of “older women teaching the younger.”

What research is required?

I’m a stickler for authenticity. I want my characters and their environment to be round and colorful—like life. I check photographs, web sites, read ‘how to’, or find someone that can relate to a situation I’m trying to capture. I was surprised at how much research I had to do for a book using belly dance as a platform in that I belly dance. Once I had started pushing out a few chapters, I decided to research the existence or definition of dance therapy. I was shocked at how accurate my characters described their own healing journey through dancing.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

No matter how successful or strong you are in other arenas of your life, never stop learning and facing the unknown. Ameera’s stage fright threatened to rob her of a wonderful female adventure.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I like to write while I listen to my DVR shows or re-runs of favorite CSI shows. If I’m writing during the day, I will make a bowl of Ramen noodles with hot sauce.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I was encouraged by my writing coach/editor, Shari Stauch of WhereWritersWin, to just write and turn off my internal editor. My stories and scenes tend to develop and clean up after we go back and cut more words and distractions.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

I’m hooked on the MadMen series! Season Three is tempting me to ignore my birthday dinner being prepared downstairs. Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m in the midst of getting the word out that after three years of work, Ameera Unveiled, was released July 25, 2013 by BQB Publishing. As soon as I can catch up with the freight train, I have a couple of ideas that I need some research. Some readers have asked if I plan to do a sequel. I couldn’t see a way to do that until I was approached by someone earlier this week. That may be a possibility.

Do you have a question for our readers?

I’d love to know what character resonated with them and why after reading Ameera Unveiled.

At the age of forty-eight, happily remarried and retired from her legal assistant gerbil wheel, Kat decides to break out of her shell and try her hand at belly dancing. What begins as a hobby leads her to filling a coveted spot in Palmetto Oasis Middle Eastern Dance Troupe. With less than eight weeks to prepare, Kat’s thrown into a world of performing she is terrified to face, all leading to a week of giving lessons and performing in Jamaica. Traveling with eight glittery strangers, she forges deep bonds under outrageous circumstances at what they’d soon all discover was a clothing-optional resort. Struggling with paralyzing stage fright and searching for the deeper root of her fears, Kat feverishly seeks a way to release Ameera, her inner dance queen. By the end of the week, the audience is mesmerized by the powerful presence and synchronicity of women joined at the hip by scarves and some glitter. Kat soon knows, with the help of eight sisters in dance, that she is finally part of a tribe, discovering an oasis to refresh her thirst to be part of a circle of women.

Enjoy an excerpt:

In the hall ahead of me, Sybil was struggling with a CD player, a small suitcase, and some music. The CD binder was slipping from under her arm. I rushed forward to offer assistance. “Can I help?” I asked.

“Sure,” Sybil said, handing me the CD player. “How was your week? Did you practice?”

“I’m trying to, but I don’t have a huge dance background,” I answered. “You make it look so easy in class, but when I stand in front of my mirror at home, it’s discouraging. I’m so stiff.” I didn’t want to sound like a whiner. “I practiced isolating the three regions of my body though.”

“That’s typical,” Sybil said. “Just keep practicing so you’ve got a good base. When we work on transitions from chest to hip, head to hands, undulations on various level changes, you’ll see the payoff.”

Transitions? I was still learning my alphabet. We headed into the drama room. Sybil and I dropped what we were carrying on the wooden floor. I saw my dance neighbor, the brunette from the first class, chatting with a young ethnic woman who looked as if she’d been born to belly dance. Not a hair out of place, she exuded confidence . . . and the tiny dancer in me cringed. Tying my hip scarf, I scooted closer to them.

“I’m so excited about this class, but it’s harder than it looks,” the brunette said. “But it’s good. I’m challenged.”

“It’s hard, but I love watching belly dancers,” the exotic one remarked. “Sybil belongs to a belly dance troupe. Can you imagine?”

Before I could add my own glittery story, Sybil had us form a circle. “Let’s review what you learned last week,” she said. “Grab one of my veils. I’m showing you the beginning of a dance to a Shakira song.” She reached into her suitcase and pulled out a stack of paper. “Take one and pass it around.”

I looked at the words. They might’ve been English, but my brain saw hieroglyphics as I read, “Pose for eight counts, veils tucked in hip. Hip lift A/B/C (right). Repeat left.” I looked at my neighbors, who were laughing at the idea of learning a dance.

In less than an hour—following week two’s round robin, reviewing modules and isolations, introducing the first half of the choreography, and a quick two-minute cooldown—Sybil slipped away. My hips were facing some serious homework.

“We’re learning choreography?” I asked, my heart banging at the thought. “I can’t believe she’ll move us this fast.”

“Hey, my name’s Polly Taylor,” the brunette said.

“I’m Kat Varn,” I answered.

“I’m Cheryl Curcio,” the exotic one informed us. “And we’re supposed to bring three yards of material for a veil?”

“I guess there isn’t a belly-dance store in Charleston,” Polly said, chuckling.

“I loved the tie-dyed veil that Sybil’s letting me use,” I said. “I guess she wants us to have something at home to practice with.”

As we walked together to the parking lot, I learned that Polly and Cheryl worked at the Medical University of South Carolina, or “MUSC,” as they called it. Introductions aside, we stopped to synopsize our lives by Polly’s car.

I went first. “I retired after working twenty-three years for an attorney. Spent last year homeschooling my son. He finished his senior year here and graduated this past summer. Taking this class was kinda my reward.”

“I’m single but dating a doctor from our pathology department,” Cheryl said next, beaming. “I saw the ad for this class in the local community paper.”

“I’m fifty-two and single—not looking for anything serious,” Polly volunteered last. She looked at Cheryl. “I saw the same ad! My life slowed down a little when my son went off to college. I love dancing and working out. Doesn’t belly dancing sound like an adventure?”

We all nodded, three dissimilar women from ages ranging in the late twenties to fifty connected by one ad. Streetlights flickered overhead, reminding us to get home to evening routines that didn’t involve hip scarves.

“Y’all, the gnats are biting,” I said. “See you next Monday—with three yards of material.”

As I pulled out of the parking lot, my heart felt lighter. That brief conversation with my dance mates reminded me how blessed I was to be retired from my legal assistant work with Thomas Rawlins Calhoun, a Charleston blue-blood attorney branded by his ancestors. Mr. Calhoun was a Confederate, and I was a Virgo. I’d juggled all my plates and his . . . too well. Each morning, I knew I’d find a flustered boss rifling through well-ordered drawers. I’d join him beside a file cabinet, resigned to the fact that I’d eventually fetch a mysteriously missing file. As he’d step aside, I’d go to the “S” tab, find the “Smith” file, and pluck at a manila folder like a captured mouse with my thumb and pointer finger. He’d shake his head and chuckle before he’d saunter off without so much as a thank you. I’d fake indifference.

Smiling, thankful that that relationship was a thing of the past, I eased my car through the back streets. Steve and I were creating our new Monday night after-class routine. Porch light on? Check. Kitchen light on? Yes. That meant Steve was cooking to reruns of Two and a Half Men. I closed the garage door and headed inside.

He pelted me with questions the minute I walked in the door. “How was class? Did you learn anything new?” Steve asked as he stirred food in a wok.

“We have to bring three yards of material next week,” I answered, casting my hip scarf on the sofa table. “She’s teaching us a short dance and how to use the veil.” My tuxedo cat, Melkey, rubbed against my legs.

“How’s that make you feel?” Steve asked. Apparently, he sensed my discomfort from my short description.

“Pushed,” I said. Suffocated, overwhelmed, scared. Admittedly, this hobby was an attempt to heal something I’d felt robbed of in my childhood that had been amplified in other areas as I entered my adult life. It was an attempt to put my creative side and my body in shape. It would take physical muscle and psychological muscle memory.

“I think six weeks is a bit ambitious to learn the craft,” I said.

Steve looked at me and smiled. “Have fun with it. You’ve earned this time to chase some girly dreams. Go get comfy.”

I kissed him then said, “I met two girls in class tonight. I’m not sure we have anything in common besides dancing, but who knows?” I left to snuggle into soft flannels. I could then join my hubby for some dinner and celebrity dance moves on Dancing with the Stars.

About the Author:
Kathleen Varn’s love affair with words manifested when she turned four and taught herself to read. As she grew older, books and reading were an escape from responsibility. Eventually, Kathleen dove into journaling, which helped her find solace in the grief of a toxic relationship. Throughout her journey to extract her family from oppression, she explored the idea of freedom through allegorical short stories. Kathleen is now very happily married to her soulmate. She resides in Charleston, South Carolina, where she worked for an adoption attorney for twenty-three years. With her two children settled in adulthood, she is exploring a beautiful world, from scuba diving in Fiji or photographing in Alaska’s frozen tundra.

Kathleen hopes her readers enjoy Ameera’s journey to pursue the forbidden zone of dance while becoming part of a larger experience—embraced and bonded to eight glittery belly dancers, each of them aware they may have never met without the common denominator of a six-week belly dance class under the tutelage of their troupe director.

The teachers taught us how to kill and made us dream for death. It is the only place the Struggle leads. And even it was a lie.

I am too old to be a child. Still too young to be a soldier. But I am trapped as both.

My name is Ayax, though some call me the Water Sign – and this is the story of how I died so that the world might live.

In a future torn apart by catastrophic climate change, biological warfare, and geopolitical upheaval, corporations have taken over the role of nation states. Protected by the re-purposed United Nations and their dreaded Peacekeepers, these corporations and their mercenary armies wage endless wars across all that remains of civilization. And hidden in this chaos, someone or something is stealing children and programming them to fight. The warriors that emerge at age fourteen are vicious and unlike any the world has ever seen.

Exploited by his teachers, and pursued by others who would use him for their own ends, Ayax must navigate our dystopian future filled with treachery, unlikely allies and forbidden AI technology. Is he the Water Sign as the Kafkari believe he is, or merely another experimental weapon?

The Water Sign is an intriguing book--a look at a world that might be. A world that takes everything we know and twists it into something unrecognizable. I found the references a bit confusing--and the world is not a world I would want to live in.

The best part of the story to me was the relationships between the characters--and I'm excited to find that this is only the first book of a series. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Bottom line? The book is very very good-- but don't sit down expecting a quick read. This is a book I think I would definitely re-read, because I'm sure there are things I missed on the first reading that I would see on a subsequent reading. There's a lot in it--kudos to the author. Definitely a great debut into the world of science fiction!

Casey S. Samulski, born May 31, 1985, is an American author - The Water Sign (2013) is his debut novel.

Casey studied literature as an undergraduate at Sarah Lawrence College before moving to New York City. There he worked as a freelance journalist covering the arts, local and national news, and public policy while continuing to work on his fiction. In 2009, Casey moved to Los Angeles where he currently resides. He has also studied applied Jungian psychology, the superflat movement in the arts, and quantum physics.

Casey began writing fiction at age seven and claims to have failed to complete more than one hundred novels before finishing his first, which he sold one month later to Booktrope Publishing.

Steven Gore -- Interview

Steven Gore's latest thriller, A Criminal Defense, has just been released.

In A CRIMINAL DEFENSE, readers find ex-SFPD detective Harlan Donnally happily retired and running a small cafe north of San Francisco. But when Mark Hamlin, a defense lawyer with a slimy reputation, is found murdered underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, Donnally is unwittingly pulled back into the fray because of specific instructions Hamlin left to call Donnally if anything happens to him....a week before. Over three decades, Hamlin’s practice devolved into just another racket: intimidating witnesses, suborning perjury, destroying evidence, laundering money. But is he the victim of murder—or of a dangerous sexual encounter gone wrong? And when law enforcement believes justice has already been done, who can be trusted to find out the real answers?

Once again in the city where his career came to a shattering end, Donnally resolved it wouldn’t be him—only to quickly find himself at the center of it all, mucking through years of crimes, drug trafficking, corrupt government officials, and money laundering to unravel this bizarre murder. But as he follows the money to unlock the mystery, tensions rise in San Francisco and it becomes obvious that everything is more complicated than it seems.
Steven was brave enough to come and answer a few questions from us. Welcome, Steven.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

The short answer: crime is what I know. I spent decades as a criminal investigator, both public and private, and while the novels aren’t based on actual people and cases, the characters and their stories have a logic and take place in a moral landscape that mirrors reality. Moreover, just like a crime from an investigative standpoint sets off a series of events, my books work out the implications of the prologue or beginning scene, sometimes looping far into the past to do so.

What research is required?

My knowledge of crime arises out of cases I have worked on. The Harlan Donnally series (Act of Deceit and A Criminal Defense) is drawn from my experience investigating domestic offenses from homicide to drug trafficking to racketeering. The Graham Gage series (Final Target, Absolute Risk, and Power Blind) is drawn from international investigations relating to fraud, money laundering, public corruption, sex and arms trafficking, etc. in places like India and Pakistan, Ukraine and the UK, China and the Golden Triangle.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

My protagonists are authentic to my experience, so it’s more that I learn from the fictional situations I place them.

Any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I think I’m average in my approach. I write five hundred words a day and always know how the next day’s writing will begin. I follow the Tony Hillerman rule: if you’ve used an adverb you haven’t found the right verb. If you use an adjective it means you probably haven’t found the right noun. I also make sure that everything in the books is written from some character’s point of view, never from the point of view of a narrator. This is related to my effort to make my stories authentic as there is no narrator in real life.

Plotter or pantser?

I don’t plot out stories. If I don’t know where a story is going, I can’t give it away to the reader. In Absolute Risk, I thought of the ending when I was a third of the way through and struggled to find a way to get there. In Act of Deceit, I wrote my way to an ending I didn’t like, so had to throw away the last fifth of the book. In A Criminal Defense, so many people had motives to kill the victim it was easy to leave the question unanswered until very close to the end.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

A who, rather than a what. My wife. We’re at an airport waiting for a flight. She’s reading Animal Wise: The Thoughts and Emotions of Our Fellow Creatures by Virginia Morrell.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

After this year’s A Criminal Defense, there will be a Donnally novel about criminality on the prosecution side of a case. The first book in the series was about a systematic failure in the courts dealing with the mentally ill. A Criminal Defense is about criminality on the defense side. After that will be another Graham Gage thriller.

Do you have a question for our readers?

The kind of question my protagonists would ask. Which is more important in the end: truth or justice? A corollary: would you be willing to sacrifice one for the sake of the other?

About the Author:
Gore is a former private investigator whose international thrillers draw on his investigations of murder, fraud, money laundering, organized crime, political corruption, and drug, sex, and arms trafficking in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The author of Act of Deceit and Power Blind, Gore has been featured on 60 Minutes for his work and has been honored for excellence in his field. He is trained in forensic science and has lectured to professional organizations on a wide range of legal and criminal subjects. His latest thriller, A CRIMINAL DEFENSE, is his second book in his thrilling series featuring ex-SFPD detective, Harlan Donnally.

Homeless Army veteran Sullivan Turner is nobody’s hero. His failure to save his fallen comrades proved that. So when a gutsy social worker gets caught in a drug gang’s crosshairs, he knows he’s the last man who can safeguard her and the pregnant teenagers she’s trying to protect.

Former debutant Haley Barnes learned the hard way how to survive. After witnessing a cold-blooded murder, the terrified teenaged runaway changed her identity and hid to save her life. But when the killer tracks her down and attacks the girls in the homeless shelter she now runs, Haley knows the time has come to stand and fight. But to bring down the powerful killer she must confront her high-society family’s darkest secrets -- and convince wounded warrior Sully Turner he’s the hero she believes.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“Are you all right?” the man asked.

His low, gravelly voice drew Haley’s attention, and she turned her head. She met his grim, whiskey-hued eyes, and her belly made a little clutch, the reaction catching her unprepared. Startled, she took in his dark, furrowed brows, the stark lines of his craggy face. He had straight, collar-length hair dampened with sweat, a slightly off-center nose that hinted at less than a choirboy past. A few days’ worth of razor stubble -- several shades darker than his hair -- covered his throat and jaw.

Her heart made another swerve. He wasn’t exactly handsome. But man, oh man, was he attractive. Arresting. Thoroughly masculine in a decidedly carnal way. He looked like an old-fashioned gunslinger, like the loner who rode into town, risking his life to battle the bad guys and save the day. A solitary man in need of comfort who left behind a trail of broken hearts as he rode away.

This was the homeless man, she realized with a start. But he was nothing like she’d expected. He was younger -- in his mid-thirties at most -- and far more virile. He wore work boots and tattered jeans, a long sleeved T-shirt he’d pushed up to his elbows, exposing the tendons roping his arms. His hands were big and lean. He cradled the gun with lethal ease.

He was the most beautiful sight she’d ever seen.

Ulterior Motives by Chandra Ryan -- Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chandra will be awarding a $20.00 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Please see the Rafflecopter at the end of the post to enter, and click the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five things most people would never guess about me:

1. I’m neurotic about food. If you open my fridge anything that is time sensitive, like cheese or juice or pasta sauce, has the date it was opened written in permanent marker on it. That way, if it says use within two weeks of opening, I know when that is.

2. I’m horribly allergic to cats but I love them so much that I owned one for fifteen years until she passed away just a year and a half ago. If she laid on my clothing I would break out in hives but, much to my allergist’s dismay, I refused to give her up.

3. Cheesecake is one of my greatest weaknesses. One year, for our anniversary, my husband and I got a cheesecake and I ate so much of it that I made myself sick. I couldn’t look at cheesecake for a year.

4. I love plants but I have a black thumb. My husband’s mother, however, is a fabulous gardener. And, at first, everybody thought I would be good with plants as well. People kept giving me plants for gifts the first couple of years but we finally had to tell them to stop. I just couldn’t keep killing the poor things.

5. I’m super ticklish just about everywhere on my body. Even unusual places like on my arms and my back. Don’t get me wrong, I’m ticklish in all the usual places as well, but you expect to be ticklish there. Sometimes someone will just brush up against me or touch my shoulder and it makes me laugh and jerk away.

About the Author:
Being from a rather nomadic family, Chandra Ryan loves to travel and meet people. But she’s found that sometimes, like when you’re stuck inside because of a good old-fashioned Southwestern heat wave, you have to make do. Fortunately for her and her loving family, who don’t like seeing her suffer from cabin fever, she’s found creating new people and places equally as fascinating. Also, you’re a lot less likely to spill your ice tea.

Dr. Eduardo Ruiz needs a break from the heart-breaking reality of his job. So when he finally introduces himself to the vivacious woman he’s been admiring, he quickly realizes they could help each other with their sticky situations…and have great fun in the process.

Can they play by their own rules, or will they succumb to the pull of seduction?

Enjoy an excerpt:

She relaxed into the seat and smiled. “So what did you tell your aunt about me?”

Now his expression went sheepish. “That we met at the hospital. You’re a surgeon.”

Nina jerked up and choked on nothing but air.

“Don’t worry.” He glanced at her in mild concern. “She really doesn’t speak much English. You’ll be fine.”

“What sort of surgeon am I?” she wheezed, fanning her face with her fingers.

He had the grace to look slightly ashamed. “Brain surgeon.”

“At the age of twenty-four?” she shrieked. “Wow. I always wanted to be a child prodigy, but this is pushing it.”

He laughed. Hunching forward, his shoulders shook as he laughed hard.

Of course, that made her want to laugh too—all her earlier anger and hurt pride dissolved. “This is insane. I can’t possibly pretend to be a brain surgeon.”

“Of course you can,” he leaned back, still smiling. “She won’t ask you about it. To her, a brain surgeon is a nightmare. They want me to meet some woman who wants nothing but babies and who’ll drag me back to Spain. The last thing they want is me with a career woman. Especially not one in medicine.”

“You don’t want babies and a villa in Spain?”

He didn’t need to answer, his face said it all. What had put him off kids so vehemently?

“Nor do I,” she admitted. At least not in the foreseeable future. “But a holiday home in the sun could be good, though.” Then she went back to panicking about the scam ahead. “I don’t know the first thing about brain surgery.”

“Don’t worry.” He reached for his wallet to pay the driver. “I don’t really care what she thinks.”

“If that’s the case, why am I here?” she challenged. “Why are you here?”

It isn’t safe for men who work in the porn business in the city of Toronto.

When porn producer Sal Turbit is found dead in his apartment, no one seems to care. No one, that is, except Detective Lynette Wilton. Lynette has been a homicide detective for only three months, and has yet to earn her stripes.

Murder is murder no matter who the victim is—and Lynette is out to catch a killer.

Could the killer be Wanda Chambers, a mentally ill woman who hates the “scumbags” who prey on the vulnerable? Wanda’s beloved sister, Cathy, was one such woman. Cathy became a porn actress and then took her own life when her sleazy manager/boyfriend, Gil Lee, wouldn’t let her go.

Lynette’s sergeant doesn’t think it’s possible. Wanda has a debilitating illness. But Lynette believes that Wanda’s hatred and harsh childhood make her a prime suspect, and she proves it by catching Wanda in the act of attempting to shoot Lee.

Renowned defense lawyer Maxine Swayman takes on Wanda’s case; Maxine has a different view of the accused. She wants to help Wanda get the help that she needs, and it’s not going to happen in a prison cell.

As the trial proceeds, will Maxine prevail and save Wanda, or will Lynette be able to tie Wanda to Turbit’s murder as well?

"Morrison knows how to create suspense! She brings readers on a roller-coaster ride that leaves you breathless from start to finish!" —Trey Anthony, star and producer “Da Kink in Da Hair”
Excerpt

“Hey,” Sal said, “come on in. You’re right on time. Good to meet ya.” He left the visitor in the living room of his shabby apartment in a grungy, low-rent building, and slipped into the kitchen. The metallic pop of a beer bottle opening echoed in the other room. Then another.

Six empty beer bottles, a heaping ashtray, and assorted marijuana paraphernalia were already strewn across his table. The grandfather clock struck four times. Sal stumbled back into the room. “I got you a beer.”

Glassy-eyed, Sal said, “I’ve got lots of great products for you to move today.” He showed the visitor the cover of a DVD. “This one is new. It’ll sell out. She’s a real sweet thing. Told me she was eighteen ’n had the ID to prove it. Likely just some little tramp from nowhere-ville. Came to the big, bad city for excitement––”

The metal felt cool as the visitor pulled out a gun.

“What the hell?” Sal screamed, just before the bullet penetrated his skull.

He fell onto the sofa, blood oozing out the back of his head. His face was contorted, almost angry looking. Certainly surprised.

The spent cartridge from the handgun ricocheted against a metal garbage can––reminiscent of the pop of a beer cap––and then landed on the carpet.

The murderer studied the victim’s splayed body, feeling a sense of elation and satisfaction. Out came a Swiss Army knife, and the killer wordlessly hacked off a section of Sal’s hair, stuffed it into a small plastic bag, and then threw it into a knapsack. The killer then picked up the half-spilled beer that Sal had been handing over when the shot was fired. Perfect. Grinning, the murderer chugged the beer, retrieved the spent cartridge, and smugly looked at Sal Turbit’s still body, now surrounded by pooling blood.

Still wearing leather gloves, the murderer put the beer bottle and hot metal bullet charge into a knapsack and fled, smiling, into the dense night.

Counting on Love, Book 1

Sometimes you see love clearly. And sometimes it has to smack you in the face.

When a stranger walks up and punches him, Ryan Kaye assumes there’s a good reason. But he’s stunned to learn it’s over a one-night stand that never happened —with his friend’s sister, straight-laced Amanda Dixon. When Ryan confronts her about the lie, Amanda apologizes, but Ryan realizes he doesn’t want her to be sorry…he wants the night they supposedly spent together.

Amanda’s not looking to add anyone to her long list of commitments, so she was only trying to let a nice guy down easy by telling him a fling with Ryan broke her heart. So what if the fling only happened in her dreams? But when Ryan Kaye tempts her with the chance to go crazy and fulfill a few fantasies, she can’t resist. Thank goodness one night isn’t enough time to fall in love…

Warning: Contains a hot paramedic who knows how to get a girl to let her hair down, a girl who thinks she prefers her hair up, some naughty laser tag, some naughty role-playing and a lot of falling in love.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“Okay, I’ll grant you all of that. So, you thought you’d flirt and dance a little, but Tim took it the wrong way.”

“Right.”

“And when you had to let him down you thought ‘what would Emma do?’”

“Something like that.”

“And you picked me because?”

“Because you’re…” She trailed off and her cheeks got even redder.

Ryan couldn’t help his grin. This he had to hear. “Because I’m…?”

“Something Emma would do.”

He couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped. No one could really argue with that, he supposed.

Amanda wet her bottom lip and looked up at him and said softly, “Sorry.”

He didn’t want an apology. He didn’t want her to be sorry for having the idea of the two of them burning up the sheets one night. He wanted her to keep that idea firmly in mind, in fact.

But Winters had mentioned something that Emma wouldn’t do—he’d said Amanda had fallen in love with Ryan.

“Did you tell him it was a one-night stand?”

He liked the idea that she would think he was so amazing that one night would cause her to be head over heels. Even if it was only in her imagination.

Amanda took a deep breath. “Yes, just one night.”

Ryan moved in closer, wanting her full attention on him. “Okay. Make it up to me.”

“How?”

“Give me that night.”

A Good Man Gone by A. W. Hartoin -- Review and Giveaway

(Cozy Mystery)

This review is in conjunction with a Virtual Book Tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. A.W. will be awarding a backlist ebook on each stop, It Started with Whisper, to a randomly drawn commenter, and a $30.00 Gift Card to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour. It’s summer in St. Louis and Mercy Watts is on vacation from her parents. The great detective and his nosy wife are on a cruise and Mercy thinks she’s off the hook for doing any investigating for them. But when a family friend has a fatal heart attack, Dad has one of his famous feelings and orders Mercy to look into it. Mercy tries not to get sucked in. She really does, but she’s her father’s daughter. Soon Gavin’s death leads to a more grisly one, the death of a bride on her wedding day. Can the two be connected? Was Gavin murdered? Now Mercy can’t stop. You do for family. That’s all there is to it.

Thoroughly enjoyable, this cozy mystery will keep you guessing and chuckling all the way to the end. Ms. Hartoin has a way with words that plunges you into the story and makes you feel as if you know each and every character, no matter how small.

Mercy, our heroine, is a nurse and the daughter of a detective. She also has friends and family in the police department, but really doesn't love investigating much of anything despite her father continually tossing cases her way.

When a family friend dies unexpectedly, Mercy pulls some strings and finds out it wasn't a heart attack as originally suspected, but murder. And thus begins our story, which ended up being far more complex that I would have imagined.

While I loved the quirky characters and interesting plot, the fact the Mercy was constantly being hit on by every character with the slightest bit of testosterone got a little old. A few times would have gotten the point across that she was gorgeous and sexy, but after I while I nearly stopped reading -- it irritated me that much. And it's the only reason this wasn't a five flower review with bells on.

Hopefully the author tones that down a bit in the next book, because otherwise this was a winner. If you like a light-hearted cozy mystery with fun, well-rounded characters and murder you won't solve until Mercy does, I recommend A Good Man Gone. It's a winner.

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Five Things You Might Not Know About Jess McConkey

1. I’m a big English history buff—specifically the Tudor period—and I can name all of Henry the Eighth’s six wives and tell you what happened to them:
Catherine of Aragon—set aside and divorced.
Anne Boleyn—beheaded. A French executioner was used so her death would be swift.
Jane Seymour—died from childbed fever.
Anne of Cleves—set aside and divorced. Henry felt like he got a “pig in a poke” on this one. He agreed to the marriage based on her portrait, only the portrait was far more attractive than the real Anne.
Katherine Howard—beheaded and her ghost supposedly haunts Hampton Court, one of Henry’s residences.
Katherine Parr—along with Anne of Cleves, she managed to outlive the randy old king, but died a year later after marrying Thomas Seymour and giving birth to a daughter.

2. At one time, I could do a mean Tush Push (a line dance), Sweetheart Schottische, and Cowboy Cha-Cha! My late husband and I belonged to a Country Western dance club. (Yes, complete with cowboy boots, jeans, a western shirt, and a cowboy hat! There are pictures, but you’d have to provide a bribe in order to see them!) The club was called “The Wild Bunch.” We weren’t all that wild, but we sure did have fun! We even did performances at local festivals and the Iowa State Fair.

3. I don’t love to write and two of my favorite words in the English language are “The End!” Don’t get me wrong…it’s one of the most rewarding, challenging, and interesting things that I’ve ever done in my life. I’m extremely grateful to have had nine books published and to all the readers who’ve supported my books. But it’s like Carolyn Hart once said when I asked her if she loved to write…her response? “Darlin’…are you kidding me? Writing is too hard of work to love!”

4. I have a somewhat obsessive personality and I tend go at things “damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead.” When I’m “on book” (a phrase coined from a fellow author and a good way to describe my process of writing a manuscript), it’s pretty much all I think about. Laundry piles up, dusty bunnies (or goofer feathers as we’ve always called them in my family) magically appear in the corners, and I sometimes forget to eat, especially when I’m nearing the end. Btw—a book is usually good for about a five pound weight loss, which of course, never stays off! I’m just so dang happy when it’s done that I go out and celebrate, thus the adding back the five pounds! Also, because of this approach to writing, I’ve been told that I’m not exactly the easiest person to be around as the end of the book draws near!

5. I grew up as an only child and spent a large part of my childhood on a farm. Thinking back, I suppose I was lonely at times, but I do credit it for allowing me to develop a “big” imagination. I was Lois Lane (yes, I also grew up reading comic books—“Superman” in particular!); a princess; a Native American; a pioneer. I created these imaginary worlds in my head, and instead of playing on my swing set as I appeared to be doing to my mother, I was really in danger from Lex Luther and waiting for Superman to swoop down and rescue me. Or when I was out tramping around in our timber, I was really a Native American stalking prey through the woods…even made my own bow out of stick and a piece of string. Sounds a little nutsy as I write this, but hey, I was just a kid and I did know it was just pretend! And I guess I’m still pretending…every time I sit down to write!

About the Author:
Jess McConkey (aka Shirley Damsgaard) is an award-winning writer of short fiction, the Abby and Ophelia series, and Love Lies Bleeding. She lives in a small Iowa town, where she served as postmaster for more than twenty years.

In the vein of Jennifer McMahon’s Promise Not to Tell, comes a haunting story about family secrets and how well we really know the people we love. THE WIDOWS OF BRAXTON COUNTY by Jess McConkey is a winning combination of family drama and gripping mystery.

Kate is ready to put her nomadic, city-dwelling past behind her when she marries Joe Krause and moves with him to the Iowa farm that has been in his family for more than 140 years. But life on the farm isn't quite as idyllic as she'd hoped. It's filled with chores, judgmental neighbors, and her mother-in-law, who—unbeknownst to Kate until after the wedding—will be living with them.

As Kate struggles to find her place in the small farming community, she begins to realize that her husband and his family are not who she thought they were. According to town gossip, the Krauss family harbors a long-kept secret about a mysterious death. As the past creeps into Kate’s present, she’s caught in a web of dangerous, unexplainable events.

While suspenseful and absolutely chilling, THE WIDOWS OF BRAXTON COUNTY is also very much the story of a woman coming to terms with her past and learning who she truly is. Readers will be drawn in by the mystery, but stay hooked because they care about Kate.

Necessary Retribution by Mike McNeff --Review and Giveaway

(Action/Adventure)

This review is in conjunction with a book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Mike will be awarding an ebook (international) of GOTU by Mike McNeff at each stop to a randomly drawn commenter, along with a grand prize of a paperback (US only) of GOTU to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. The other stops on the tour can be found by clicking the tour banner.

“We don’t need you guys for easy missions.”

Those words set the stage for the entry of Robin Marlette and his team of ex-cops into the world of covert operations and counter-terrorism. After two years of intense training by the best special ops teams in the US military, The CIA and the world situation propel the team into dangerous and complex missions that threaten the world’s balance of power and tests the team to the ragged edge of their abilities.

Author Mike McNeff continues the saga of the Guardians, first introduced in his first novel GOTU and takes the reader on another action packed roller coaster of a story. You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat as Robin leads his men while they capture international criminals, rescue hostages and fight terrorists all over the globe...with the help of unlikely partners. Mike’s research into the historical background is evident and adds frightening realism to the plot.

If you like to be swept away with tense and exciting action, this book is for you.

With a writing style reminiscent of Tom Clancy, author Mike McNeff creates a story that intrigues and a group of characters the reader can care about.

First, let me say that this is the second in a series. Aside from some references by Robin "Rob" Marlette to "the attack" (which upon some research I discovered apparently happened in the first book when his daughter was kidnapped) I never felt in the least bit lost. This book very ably stands alone.

It's complex and full of details. This is both good and bad... it makes it difficult to get into at the beginning (which also made me think of Clancy ... I have the same problem with his books) because so much information is being presented and we haven't gotten to know the characters enough to care about what happens.  I recommend you stick with it, though, because once you do get to know the group of characters involved in The Guardians, you won't want to stop.

I admit, too, that I hadn't realized when I chose to read this book that it's set in the recent past.  When the discussion of Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait came up, it had me scratching my head.  My husband fought in Desert Storm, so this event is something I'm familiar with.  But once I got past that, it was full steam ahead.

I love the group dynamic between the members of this group Robin has organized, as well as the interactions with his family.  And, though the action was exciting and interesting, it's this dynamic that kept me reading.

All-in-all, Necessary Retribution was a good book.  Despite the difficulty I had engaging with the story at the beginning, I'm glad I read it.  It's full of action, great characters and good, complex writing.  If you like books by Tom Clancy, this might be a good fit for you.

4 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Secrets of a Dangerous Woman by p.m. terrell -- Review and Giveaway

(Suspense, Paranormal)

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a $20 Amazon gift card to one randomly drawn commenter--you can see the other stops by clicking the tour banner.

Dylan Maguire is back and in his first mission with the CIA he must interrogate a recently captured Brenda Carnegie. But when she escapes again, it’s obvious that she’s had help from within the CIA’s own ranks. With Vicki Boyd’s psychic help, he must locate her again—and find out why some in the highest levels of government want her dead while others will risk everything to help her. And when he finds out her true identity, his mission has just become very personal.

p.m. terrell draws, once again, upon her father's life as an FBI agent and her own work in computers to bring us the third book in the Black Swamp Mystery Series, Secrets of a Dangerous Woman-- a book that pulls together the main characters from Book 1, Exit 22, and Book 2, Vicki's Key, in an explosive combination that shakes the foundation of Vicki Boyd's life--not to mention her relationship with Dylan Maguire.

There are many secrets at work here--and p.m. does a tremendous job at weaving them together seamlessly.

The action is non-stop and the reader barely has time to catch her breathe from one crisis before being plunged right into another one. Reading these books remind me of being on a roller-coaster ride... and I love roller-coasters!!!

I hope there are many many more books in store for this cast of characters!!
