Saving the Children by Fran McNabb - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Fran McNabb will be awarding a $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The lives of six orphans lie on the shoulders of a nurse and a wounded Special Ops soldier. . .

After losing her husband and unborn child in a car accident, Victoria Lafferty has devoted her life to helping South American children find homes in the US, but her plans are thrown into chaos by a rebellion in the country.

When his mission is compromised and he is shot and captured, Major John Dawson is kept alive so the rebel leader can “take care” of John himself for killing his brother.

Together Victory and John face the hostile jungle and the rebel leader, but will deep-seated guilt and a desire for revenge stand in the way of their life together?

Enjoy an excerpt:

The distant scream of a jaguar shattered the morning quiet of the jungle. Major John Dawson lay unmoving and imagined the beauty of the big cat stalking his prey in the last moments before the sun drove the animal into hiding.

John waited for another roar or scream from the thick underbrush—anything to help his mind escape the pain.

It didn’t come.

Finally he forced his eyelids open to face another day in captivity somewhere in the bowels of the tiny country of San Gabriel. Weak streams of light struggled through the hole in the thatched roof and fell on the dirt floor. The odor of lingering smoke and burned cornmeal sent his stomach muscles into knife-cutting contractions.

God, don’t let me vomit.

He covered his lower face with his hand then took several long deep breaths. Carefully he turned his head to the side to see how far the bucket of water sat away from him. He needed to wet his parched mouth, but getting to it meant moving, and moving meant more pain.

Bracing himself, he swallowed, lifted his elbow to begin the slide, but stopped. Talking and footsteps outside the door of his hut made him stop. His body went on alert. With a bullet still lodged somewhere in his left shoulder area and fever draining his body of every ounce of energy, there was nothing to do but wait for the makeshift door to be thrown open.

He gritted his teeth. He hated being helpless.

Summer of the Eagle by Susan Edwards - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Susan will award a $15 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The most powerful woman in her tribe, Blaze can heal with a touch, control the elements, merge her mind with any living creature and more. Yet, she is an outcast. Her people fear her and she herself is afraid of the things she can do. There is darkness in her visions, along with a tall, buckskin-clad stranger with golden-brown hair and eyes as green as the leaves on trees. Somehow, he is her destiny.

Luc Cordell is done with trapping. He yearns for civilization and a normal life. His only regret is leaving behind his family. But his father’s second wife is a SpiritWalker, and now, so is his father. How can Luc live with people who run with the wolves or soar across the heavens with the owls? Yet when a haunted healer with stars in her colorful eyes enters his life, he is drawn into the mystical world whether he likes it or not.

The winds of change are sweeping across the land, taking Luc and Blaze into a world of lies, deceit, and murder. Together, they search for truth and must turn to the eagles for answers.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Follow your heart. She put a hand to her chest and felt the small leather bag given to her by Wise Owl. She pulled the clear stone from the pouch and held it up to the sunlight. She studied the patterns in the smoky-white center. Last night, it had been completely clear. In the sunlight, she spotted four tiny golden flecks that hung like stars trapped in the crystal.

“You are a special stone,” she murmured as light fell on one flat surface and radiated through the crystal, bringing it to life. She felt something in the crystal, some greatness, a power that seeped into her and sang in her veins.

Ancient life.

“What is your purpose?” she asked as she watched the center come alive. She focused. Visions often came to her on shiny surfaces, things she could see and others could not. Many times a vision was her first warning that she was needed in the village.

She focused on her questions. The clouds inside the crystal seemed to move and change color until, finally, there in the center of the stone, there sprang the image of a broad-shouldered, narrow-hipped buckskin-clad trapper with golden-brown hair. One of the stars pulsed over his heart.

Holding her breath, Blaze brought the crystal closer to her face. She couldn’t see his features clearly, just the shape of a face, but as though he sensed her gaze upon him, he turned his head toward her and Blaze couldn’t help her gasp of amazement. His face became clearer until that was all she could see. It was like looking into a mirror and seeing the face of another.

His eyes were a rich, warm green like the thick carpet of ferns growing in the deepest shade of the forest. His face was covered with hair, as most trappers seemed want to wear it, but his mouth was firm and his nose long and straight. But his eyes drew her again, mesmerized her. They were deep pools of soothing green.

“Who are you?” Her voice was a soft whisper.

The stranger stared into her eyes, then his image grew smaller. He held out one arm. Long fringe swung back and forth, and his fingers curled out and toward her.

“Help me.”

Five Things About Perrin Pring: Guest Post and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Perrin Pring will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Thank you It’s Raining Books for having me and supporting The Ryo Myths! Today you asked me to share five things the average person wouldn’t guess about me. Here I go:

1.) I love to bake, and in fact, once won a pie baking contest. Recently, I’ve been into making triple layer red velvet cake, triple layer meringue cake, blueberry pie, and mochi. I don’t invent my own recipes, but I guess I just have more patience than most people for long complicated recipes. I do trash my kitchen every time I try something new though. I usually manage to get a good bit of whatever I’m doing all over me and the floor.

2.) I greatly enjoy shooting shotguns. I know that sounds ridiculous, especially coming after my statement that I love to bake, but it doesn’t change the truth of the matter. I had a boss who taught me how to shoot a shotgun while standing on one foot. He introduced me to the ‘push/pull’ method of shooting, which greatly reduces the kick of the gun and allows you to shoot multiple rounds in quick succession. It’s pretty cool and really fun.

3.) I won a silver medal in the 2004 slalom whitewater kayaking Junior Olympics. In high school,I competed internationally in wildwater kayaking and nationally in slalom whitewater kayaking. I represented the United States in three different wildwater events, two of which were in Europe.

4.) I recently started practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is a grappling martial art. I love it and practice it whenever I can. I get submitted constantly, but I find the entire discipline to be highly fulfilling both mentally and physically.

5.) I am a sucker for animals. I love them and can’t watch movies where they die.

Filion felt safe in his role as a Dream Searcher. He was paid to venture into other’s dreams and exert influence over individuals whom he would never meet in the flesh.

But that was until he received The Summoning. Filion has been called to track down and protect Ryo, the last of the Chozen. She is the only hope of preventing a tide of evil driven by the Afortiori and the prospect of universal slavery if they aren’t stopped.

Time is ticking and Filion has no idea of how to find Ryo let alone how to protect her, yet destinies of planets rest in her hands. Enlisting the help of a rag-tag band of mercenaries, Filion will set out to search the wastes for Ryo. Together they will confront an evil whose power they just might have fatally underestimated.

I was a natural flier, I could take a punch, and I was smarter than most. Within five years I was a full-fledged pilot. On my last assignment, I was Master Pilot Eri Everfar, commanding pilot of a class B Federal war ship, the Seeker, and that’s where I met him, Drakier Lu…

Filion and his new friends have escaped Bok and are stuck in an asteroid field that isn’t supposed to exist. They’ve almost run out of fuel, their water supply is seriously depleted, all of their food has been destroyed, and the girl they’d just risked everything to save, Ryo, is dead.

Captain Eri’s former lover, Drakier Lu, has been promoted to Master Commander of the entire Federal Fleet, and his assignment is to find and capture the Dark Horse. Captain Eri has been identified as a Tiori, and she and her associates have just become the Federation’s most wanted. Things aren’t what they seem though, and the line between good and evil blurs as the players’ true motivations come to light.

Filion and the crew return, traveling the galaxy and dodging the Federation and the Tioris, all the while searching for a rogue planet that may or may not be harboring the one person who can save them all…

When I was on Lamu, I inhaled an Afortiori's vileness. That blackness will be what allows me to win. I will use their own evil against them. Because of this I am tainted. I am but a degree different from what I fight, but in that degree, hangs the balance between universal slavery and Free Will.

Having fled from Lamu only moments before its destruction, Filion and his friends find themselves hiding in the shadows as the Federation and the Afortiori mobilize against their worst enemy, The Etulosba and its crew. The Etulosba, Ryo, plans for her final battle. She was engineered to fight for Free Will, but to win that war, she will have to become what no Chozen was meant to be - an Afortiori. Caught in Ryo's wake, Captain Eri is torn between leading her crew and confronting Drakier Lu, her former lover and torturer. Will she be able to overcome what he did to her, or will she fail, thereby becoming what he made her and letting down Ryo, her crew, and ultimately, the universe? Filion and the crew return in the final installment of The Ryo Myths. Join them as they begin a journey that not all of them will survive.

Enjoy an excerpt from The Degrees of Destiny:

Initially, she’d thought the energy transfer had been temporary. Then she’d tortured Teeive instead of killing him, and now she realized the true cost of what she’d done. Some of his energy lived on inside of her. She hadn’t foreseen that. Inhaling Teeive’s energy had been like filling a suitcase with sand. She’d dumped out most of the sand, but grains of it remained, and they were expanding. She could feel the cold, calculating, psychopathic tendrils of Afortiori vile spreading and threatening to overtake her body. It wasn’t a battle she was sure she could win, but it might be what won her the war.

“I held that evil inside of me,” Ryo continued. “It powered me. I became high on its force. Then it left but not all of it. Some of it still lives within me.” She stood and faced Wiq. “I cannot fight this war without it.” She stood and faced Wiq. “I cannot fight this war without it. That blackness will be what allows me to win. I will use their own evil against them. Because of this I am tainted. I am but a degree different from what I fight, but in that degree, hangs the balance between universal slavery and Free Will. You and I, we have fought over Free Will, we have fought for Free Will, but we have never had Free Will. Captain Eri must exercise her Free Will because to me, she is everything that those words mean. If she does that, I can stay on the side of the right. I can fight this blackness and use it to save her. If she denies it though, or if she dies…”

Ryo looked at her hands. They flashed and became translucent. Wiq could see Ryo’s veins. As Wiq watched, a shadow spread through Ryo’s blood, darkening it to black.

“This vileness inside of me is not static. It pushes. It grows. I fight it, but I’m fighting on all fronts. She is my hope. She is my faith. She is what keeps this blackness at bay. She must not fail, or we all die.”

Trispero by Sean Adelman

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Sean Adelman will be awarding a paperback copy of Trispero to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?
I love writing fictions because I get to create things that I want to see. When a situation in real life doesn't go the way I think it should, I can write a story that makes it right. It also gives me a chance to use a part of my brain that I don't get to use as an orthopedic surgeon. I am drawn to it partly because my writing is also a message. My stories are supposed to send a message about inclusion and acceptance of people with different abilities. Every time I get a message from someone who appreciates what I do I get pulled in even further to my writing career.

What research is required?

My latest novel Trispero required a tremendous amount of research into the genetics of Down syndrome and cancer treatments. Fortunately for me part of that was helped by the fact that I have been a doctor since 1993 and an orthopedic surgeon since 1998. In addition, I have 18 years of experience raising a beautiful daughter with Down syndrome. My research came in large parts from the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, the Fred Hutchinson cancer research center, and the LuMind Foundation.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Writing Trispero allowed me to gain an even greater appreciation of what is important in life. There was a lot of Jason in me so I unwittingly had to work out some of my own feelings in writing his character. It was also hard, in that, Jason was not me, so he had to do things that maybe I wouldn't.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Growing up my dad and I used to work on old cars together. I loved my time with my dad so I have a strong sentimentally towards old cars. As a result, I like to include a cool car in my stories that has nothing to do with the plot just for fun. You'll have to tell me what the car is in Trispero after you read it.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am definitely a plotter. I don't always have time to sit and plot everything out, but I have to have an idea of an outline of the plot in my head. No matter how hard you try there is an element of writing that is always a little free flowing. I do try to stay organized, even if it's only in my own mind.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

To my right is downtown Seattle over Lake Union. Sitting on my couch with the shades up enjoying a beautiful sunset while I write.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

My next adventure will be a sequel to Trispero. I would also like to do a graphic novel for people with intellectual disabilities, but that is still in the idea phase.

Do you have a question for our readers?

While you are reading Trispero, I want you to really think about what's important to you. Sometimes the most important things in life may not even be something you think about. A great story sticks with you long after reading it.

8_10 BookCover_TrisperoOur intellect directs us. Our humanity defines us.

What if the key to unlocking our genetic code and our future lay within some of our most disenfranchised individuals? Would we still shun them?

Seattle in the year 2330: centuries of conflict have led to this precipice. If the world is to move forward, Olivay has the difficult task of teaching Alucia her history. Olivay knows that without understanding where she came from Alucia will never be able to help humanity explore the universe.

In present day Seattle, Jason Roy is a scientist whose life revolves around his daughter, Lily. Within her genome lies a secret that Jason has dedicated himself to uncovering. The mundane life of a scientist and his family takes a turn when a multinational corporation decides Jason Roy's research is a danger to them.

Jason and Lily are now running away from an unforeseen enemy and toward a discovery that will change mankind. Altering the world may come too late for Jason to save what matters most in his own world.

The great irony of unlocking our genetic potential was finding that our greatness was found in our love for one another. -Trispero almanac

“Ms. Sydney, you have five minutes left.”

I don’t have time. Debbie made a split decision. She moved the files directly into her drive before her program finished. “Thirty seconds, twenty seconds, five seconds. Download complete.”

“Ms. Sydney, what are you doing?”

The alarm had notified him. Debbie carefully watched as the security guard moved toward her. He was the only other person here. The young guard at the window was not in her direct line of sight. Debbie quickly removed her drive. The guard moved in closer.

“Ms. Sydney, I will need you to give me that drive and come with me!”

Debbie bowed her head as she turned with her hand held out gesturing toward the guard as if she was going to give him the drive. The guard reached to take it when Debbie seized his hand pulling him forward and allowing his momentum to increase the force as her opposite elbow collided with his temple. The guard was dazed but not out, so before he could alert anyone, she put him in a sleeper hold until he was out completely. Debbie quickly slid him under the table and moved toward the door. The guard in the window must not have heard anything as indicated by his curt nod. She returned his gesture and took great care not to run as she went toward the stairs. Patience. Don’t attract attention.

Debbie left the stairwell carefully walking past the administration building security. The lines from the morning were gone so the guards acknowledged her. She turned and smiled while pushing on the door just as the alarm went off. Debbie ran with all her might away from the security gate at the road entrance. Running behind the building as the alarm got louder and louder, Debbie pulled out her phone.

“Agent Davis, come get me.”

Kiss of the Incubus by C.J. Harwin - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. C.J. Harwin will award a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter a $20 Amazon/BN GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

An incubus who feeds off the sexual desires of others, Roth de Lis has never been denied the pleasure of a woman’s body...until now. Lilah, once a warrior maiden in the service of a goddess, languishes on Earth after being cast out from the slopes of Mount Olympus.

Lilah will do anything to return home to Olympus, including betraying Roth. As she spins her web of lies, Roth begins a slow, wicked seduction that eventually threatens to consume them both. But when Lilah’s deceit comes to light, will their torrid love affair be able to overcome a pact with the darkest of gods?
Enjoy an excerpt:

Roth made his way back through the VIP room and into the dance area. Half a dozen women had approached him before he could make it to the door, slipping him phone numbers he’d never use and telling him names he didn’t care to know. One in particular got a little too frisky, trying to corral him into a kiss before he gently set her aside and continued making his way out.

He was only interested in one woman’s kiss, but Lilah had decided he wasn’t worth her time. And she’s right. Roth knew he didn’t have anything to offer one such as her, but he wanted her all the same. Want her. The incubus echoed his thoughts back to him, as if it were puzzling over the same riddle—how to make her… What? Make her love me? Impossible.

The hope at such a fairy tale died in his breast as he remembered how she’d turned from him after he revealed his terrible secret. He’d done so much to so many that he would forever be tainted. The incubus would never leave. To do so meant death for the both of them. She was repulsed by his evil, as she should be.

He would have sighed had he been the sort, but instead he pushed out the front doors, nearly breaking them off their hinges. He noted his empty car with a total lack of surprise. Lilah had a problem following directions, as he well knew. Her bullheaded nature made him smile to himself.

The he saw her. She stood as if frozen, somehow dumbstruck as a male slung his arm around her and groped her ass.

In an instant, Roth decided he would kill the male for touching her, but first he would make him suffer.

Courage Resurrected by R. Scott Mackey - Interview and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. R. Scott Mackey will be awarding a $50 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I’ve always been drawn to mysteries as a reader, so it came naturally to me to write them. The best mysteries are so much more than about “whodunit,” and that’s what I strive to do in my work. I purposely created a mystery series so that I could fully develop my characters, especially that of Ray Courage and Rubia. I want to grow and evolve them over the books as the events they encounter affect and change them. It’s my intent to develop living, breathing characters that readers can relate to even as these characters face extraordinary circumstances.

What research is required?

My Courage Mystery Series of books take place in Sacramento and other Northern California locations, places that I know very well. That has been a very fun part of writing these books—sharing this part of the world with readers. Many of the locations are represented as they actually are, others are composites. Quite often I will visit the location of a scene in the book so I can capture it accurately, finding the details that paint the right picture without over-describing the scene. In Courage Resurrected, for example, there are a lot of scenes that take place along the Sacramento River and some of the small towns next to it. I spent several days driving the twisting country roads that follow the river, stopping in the towns, eating in the restaurants, and talking to the locals so that I could get an accurate feel for those places and the people who inhabit them.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Ray Courage is just an ordinary guy. That was the premise from the very beginning. I had grown tired of reading (and seeing in movies) about characters that are “super-human” figures, whether that’s in winning cartoonish fistfights, engaging in car chases and gun battles, or performing some other daredevil act without being physically or emotionally affected by it. Ray is in his fifties and encounters things he’s never-before experienced, including murders, threats from thugs with guns, and so on. In his case these things weigh on him heavily and affect his character and decision-making. When I write about him I try to envision how I might be affected if faced with the same set of circumstances. So I guess you could say I’m always learning about myself as I explore the character of Ray Courage.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Some people think it is strange that I write standing up or sitting on an exercise ball. I do that to ease the stress on my back ... and it works. I also practice tai chi in my writing office to stay in shape and take a mental break.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I create a detailed plot for all of my books. And then I almost always deviate from it once I start writing. Having an outline helps me feel confident that I won’t write myself into a corner or a dead end. Once I start writing the story, however, the characters and events evolve from my initial conception in new and more exciting ways. For example, the biggest plot twists in both Courage Matters and Courage Resurrected were not in the original plot. As it turned out these twists were some of the favorite parts of these books for readers.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

My dog, panting heavily after our long walk this morning. She’ll stay here with me until we break for lunch. Just beyond her is a bookshelf filled with a thesaurus, two dictionaries, a Chicago Manual of Style, as well as softcover copies of Courage Begins, Courage Matters, and Courage Resurrected.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

The fourth book in the Ray Courage Mystery Series, Courage Lies Beneath, is now in editing and cover design mode. I plan to release that book the first week of October. I will be offering readers a free download of it if they join my book launch team (early readers who want to offer a review the day of launch). If your readers would like to be notified about when the free download will be offered, they can go to www.RScottMackey and sign up for my monthly newsletter. They can also download a free copy of Courage Begins when they’re there.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Thank you for giving me the chance to ask a question. I would like to ask your readers what is it about their favorite novels that they like the most? The characters? The story/plot? Humor? Writing style and quality? Or is it a combination of all of these that make a story compelling?

Ray Courage’s wife Pam died thirteen years before in a car accident. Or did she? Ray’s world is turned upside down when he receives a series of e-mails from someone claiming to be his dead wife, accusing him of attempting to kill her and vowing revenge. Ray sets out to find the identity of the e-mailer only to discover the circumstances of his wife’s apparent death appear to be all but accidental.

Soon Police Detective Carla Thurber comes to suspect Ray of killing his wife, and of a subsequent murder of Pam’s confidant. Meanwhile, a murderous predator who does not want the facts of Pam’s death to surface aims to stop Ray. In the greatest challenge of his life, Ray must outrun the police and elude those who are out to kill him as he seeks the truth about his wife’s death.

Enjoy an excerpt:

After she left I took out my phone and opened the email from Pam1111, fully intending to delete it after a quick glance. Instead of some offer for an erection booster or the chance to aid a Nigerian princess, the message gave me an immediate chill:

Ray,
How could you have done that to me 13 years ago? Me, the person you said you loved? Well, it didn’t work. I’m not dead and I am going to make you pay after all these years. Better look over your shoulder.
Pam

But when she learns the job is teaching the world’s biggest barbarian how to act like a gentleman, she wonders if she shouldn’t have asked for more money. He’s vulgar, uncaring, and rougher around the edges than a serrated bread knife. He’s also sexy, fierce, and undeniably tormented.

Will Sadie help him overcome his past, or will she find her heart hopelessly trapped by a man determined to self-destruct?

Enjoy an excerpt:

He stood up. “I think I’ll go for a swim. Care to join me?”

“What?”

“A swim. It’s been centuries since I’ve been in the ocean.”

“Centuries, huh? Well, I’m sorry, but no. We need to work, Andrus. I have less than a week to get you ready, or I don’t get paid.”

“You should’ve negotiated for a better deal.” He kicked off his boots and stripped off his shirt.

Holy mother of God.

As her eyes scaled up his abs, the deep grooves of his washboard stomach flexing with fiercely seductive power, she found herself mesmerized. The light olive skin of his bare arms and chest and…Oh my God. This guy is built like an evil sexy tank. And whether she liked it or not, her female libido reacted—nipple tingles, core flutters, the whole nine yards. Or ten inches, in his case.

Andrus caught her blatantly drooling and then winked. “You’re welcome.” He dipped his head of thick, messy dark hair, turned, and slowly made his way toward the water.

Sadie watched along with every other woman within eyeshot. They all stopped whatever they were doing—volleyball, applying suntan oil, kissing their boyfriends, or avoiding trees while they were rollerblading—Watch out! Oh, that had to hurt. Even the men stopped to fume in Andrus’s general direction, seething with a territorial-type jealousy as he practically floated over the sand, his naturally tanned muscles flexing and pumping in a hypnotic rhythm as he strolled toward the waves.

He looked like a fucking god. Tall, lean, menacing ropes of—

He jumped head first into a wave, startling Sadie from her little sexually charged, mental detour.

MediaKit_BookCover_OfGodsAndMadnessThe right hand of the dominant mob family, Raine Morgan is tasked with hunting down two miscreants messing with the bottom line. He finds them on the docks, but, in the confusion of the fight, accidentally kills their victim and lets them escape. Horrified at what he's done, Raine seeks redemption as well as revenge.

Things spiral out of control when a greedy middleman overthrows Raine's mob organization. It's only with the help of a friend inside the crumbling mob as well as a streetwise artist that Raine remains undetected as he searches for the men who started this all. Raine doesn’t realize, however, he has caught the attention of a disparate conclave of gods in the process.

As the pantheon returns to the city they'd abandoned, old conflicts re-emerge, causing divine civil war. Both sides try to pull Raine to their side, expecting to find a naive god for them to manipulate. Instead, they find a man stripped of everything, intent on playing both sides as they learn an awful reality - even gods can die.

The figures disappeared around a jagged line of barrels. Cale kept the same speed, listening to their movements. Running his fingers along cold steel of the shipping container, he moved around to catch one of them, the largest one, venturing towards the labyrinth, retreating moments later. Quiet laughter followed as they teased and jostled each other.

Coming to a stop, he stared at the silhouettes, considered his action. The children crept forward, toying with the lines of shadows as they went. Cale balled his hand into a fist and rapped on the metal with the white bone shards that wrapped his fingers like a gauntlet. One, two, three times in a slow, measured beat. A breeze coalesced with the beat, twisting into something entirely inhuman.

The whispers stopped. So did the thump of the children’s footsteps. The three children froze, stared into the darkness. The sound of happy jostling was gone, replaced with the splashing of choppy waves.

Cale struck the crate once more.

Shrill shouts hit his ears as the silhouettes retreated, tripping over each other in their haste. Cale watched them, making sure they didn't stay. He rested a hand on his gun, wondering what he'd do if the Stalker actually showed up again. His heart thudded, anxiety creeping into his chest. As he watched the last leg disappear over the last step, he turned back to the docks. He had a long night ahead of him.

With the area empty once more, he felt a wave of relief wash over him.

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“I don’t want any trouble, Kylen.” Nervous, she scanned the parking lot again for a possible ally. “I have cold stuff in the trunk and errands to run. If you want Deacon, I’m sure you know how to find him.”

“You know my name? How sweet. Then I guess Deacon’s told you about me?” He eased up closer and cocked his head at an odd angle that made his eyes look even creepier…if that were even possible.

“I heard him call you by your name when we were in…down…below,” she said, unable to call it what it was: Purgatory.

He was right in her face now. Uncomfortable and scared, she palmed the knife in her jacket pocket, wondering when and whether she should show it or use it. Kylen slid a dry hand down the side of her cheek and around the back of her neck, pulling her closer to his face. She stiffened and vacillated between stabbing him through her jacket pocket and screaming.

He was so close. She could hurt him at least. Screaming might also be effective, but either of those options would lead to lots of questions, possibly a confrontation with the police, and the rest of the day would be toast. Besides, she had no explanation that would not land her under “observation” for several hours, if not longer.

She released the knife. Instead, she slid her hand into her pants pocket and extracted a handful of salt, hurling it directly into his eyes. He cursed and bellowed like a wounded animal, clawing at his face. She pushed him hard, and he stumbled far enough backward that she was able to get the Lincoln’s big-ass door open and scramble inside. Slamming the door shut, she popped the electric locks. She turned the motor over, slammed the car into Reverse and peeled out of the parking lot and onto Main Street.

Watch the book video:

Enjoy an excerpt:

A shudder raced through her and her stomach knotted. Nausea rose up to her throat as darkness descended in her mind.

“I’m sending you an SOS. Sending you an SOS. An SOS.” Can you find me? Can you hear me?

“I hear you,” Trudy whispered, answering the small, trembling voice.

“Did you say something, Rachel? Are you singing something?” This was a different voice in her head. A deep bass, but gentle. Coaxing, cajoling, cunning.

The darkness parted like a curtain in Trudy’s mind and Rachel came into view. She sat in a child’s white rocking chair, her red tennis shoes dangling inches from the floor. A wedge of purple discolored her right cheek. Her lips twitched and her chin quivered.

“Be a good girl and do what you’re told and that won’t happen to you again. No one wants to hurt you. You gotta obey, though. Can’t say ‘no’ to your elders. Your mama should have taught you that.”

“It hurts.”

“Want me to kiss it and make it well?”

Rachel rounded her shoulders, making herself smaller. “Nuh-uh.”

“Okay then. I could make it stop hurting though . . . I’ll read you a Bible story. How about that? Remember what we talked about? God is way up here . . . then there’s his disciples right here . . . and then your elders . . . and you’re way down below that.”

Glimpses of hands . . . moving up and down, illustrating the levels. Dirty nails, dry skinned knuckles.

“Where’s Mommy?”

“Are you hearing me? This is important.”

“I want to talk to Mommy.”

“She doesn’t want to talk to you! God gave you to us. Your Mommy is busy serving the Lord and now you’re here serving us because it’s been ordained. Quit touching your face! That won’t help it heal. Come sit in my lap while I read. Did you hear me ask nice? You won’t like it if I have to ask twice. That’s my good girl. You act like this all the time and you won’t get any more boo-boos.”

Was he kissing her? Was he licking her?

The SEAL's Angel by Petie McCarty - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award three randomly drawn winners via Rafflecopter an epub copy of The SEAL's Angel. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The SEAL's Angel is the third story in the Mystery Angel Romance [MAR] series. Each stand-alone love story in the series has an angel hidden in the plot, and the angel's identity isn't revealed until the finale -- unless the reader figures it out first.

In The SEAL's Angel, Navy SEAL Sean MacKay's teammate is murdered after stealing a deadly nerve-gas formula from Syrian terrorists. Naval Intelligence believes MacKay's teammate was a traitor and shipped the stolen formula to his sister in the states for safekeeping. MacKay is given orders to find the sister before the terrorists do and to retrieve the stolen formula at all costs.

Foreclosure looms for Cory Rigatero as she fights to keep her rustic resort near Mt. St. Helens afloat after her brother deserted her to join the SEAL Teams. Cory's whole world dives into a tailspin when Sean MacKay shows up at her resort with the news of her brother's death and the wild suspicion her brother may have sent her traitorous classified documents. No way will Cory trust MacKay -- the man who once seduced her and then vanished into the night without a trace.

Enjoy an excerpt:

"I thought I'd go out front and see if Vern needed any help," Cory said. "He's all done," Cook said and handed Garth a dog biscuit from a jar on the counter. "He had a young man out front helping him when I peeked out the window." "A young man? You mean Jasper?" "No, I've never seen this one around here before." Cook went back to her pot. "Handsome, though," she added. "They headed for the barn." "I better go see who it is," Cory said, already striding for the back door. She called out as soon as she reached the barn, and Vern hollered from his small office at the back. Cory threaded her way through all the equipment in the back half of the barn and stopped dead in the doorway of the shop that doubled as Vern's small office. Cook's stranger stood up when she appeared in the doorway and literally took Cory's breath away. Shaggy hair and dark brown curls perfectly teamed with a matching beard was her first thought. Her second thought was broad -- really broad -- shoulders beneath his black flannel shirt, and hips so narrow his black jeans sagged a bit on his frame. His sleeves were rolled up, and those forearms and biceps belonged to a working man. Good grief! Stop staring Cory! She jerked her gaze to his face, and blue eyes stared back. Blue eyes that caught her gaze like a predator traps prey. Blue eyes that twinkled with just enough devilment to cause a wicked flutter in her belly. Blue eyes that looked startlingly familiar. Maybe she just wanted them to look familiar, so she could already know this handsome man. "Mac here is our new help." About the Author:
Petie spent a large part of her career working as a biologist at Walt Disney World -- "The Most Magical Place on Earth" -- where she enjoyed working in the land of fairy tales by day and creating her own romantic fairy tales by night. She eventually said good-bye to her "day" job in order to write her stories full-time.

Petie is a member of Romance Writers of America, and she shares homes in Tennessee and Florida with her horticulturist husband, a spoiled-rotten English Springer spaniel addicted to pimento-stuffed green olives, and a noisy Nanday conure named Sassy who made a cameo appearance in Angel to the Rescue.

Where Wolves Talk by D.L. Lewis - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. D.L. Lewis is awarding one randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter a $10 Amazon/BN GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour. NOTE: This book is on sale for only $0.99!!

Kitten, an American tabby residing in England, is a frustrated cat. He knows his place in the world: he was born to kill. Killing, after all, is what felines are supposed to do. Confined within his Lady's house, however, the young fellow is deprived of the opportunity to hunt live prey. The mansion is a sterile playground for a predator; offering nothing more than furniture which allows itself to be brutalized far too easily. The ambitious cat is bored and hungry for a challenge.

Kitten learns of a passage hidden in his Lady's library: the Door, which leads to an unknown world. The cat has been told that the source of all evil dwells openly in this place. The feline is eager to fight the sinister personage and goes through the Door with no hesitation.

The tabby finds himself in what appears to be a forest like any other in England. It doesn't take long for him to learn that this is a very different place.

Written in the basic style of classic stories like THE LORD OF THE RINGS, WATERSHIP DOWN, and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, this novel can be appreciated on different levels. To some readers, it's an allegorical tale: thought-provoking and filled with symbolism. To others, it's an adventure-filled page-turner.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Twilight was too short in this world; expressing itself in a brief moment of pale-purple light that came and went in a tantalizing flash. As the lavender glow vanished, darkest night swallowed the forest in a voracious bite; making it cry out in noises far colder than those of the warm pleasant morn: sounds dreadfully opposite to the birdsong and happy chatter that filled the wood earlier in the day. The force expressing itself now was redolent of hunger, fear, and longing: growls and whimpers punctuated by the staccato of scrabbling feet; whinings and whirrings that bespoke pursuit and flight; shrill screams articulating the futile desperation that comes before a violent end.

The fur along Kitten’s spine rose. Such terrors were foreign to a beloved house pet. In this wild, hungry place each and every bush could conceal a lurking predatory animal; a lion, perhaps, who would think nothing of making the cat into its evening meal. In his Lady’s house, the tabby had been king of beasts; the only beast, if truth be told, aside from an occasional mouse who might cross his path and flee at the sight of the tiny tiger. Excepting his Lady’s water atomizer, Kitten had found nothing to fear in his house. But this place: this wild, hungry place where a Shorthair counted as no more than a tasty dish; this wild, hungry place where rustlings and crunches seemed not mere noises but harbingers of impending death—this wild, hungry place was dreadful.

Mercy's Rescue by Debra Holt - Spotlight and Giveaway

SBB_TourBanner_MercysRescue copy

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Debra will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

MediaKit_BookCover_MercysRescueFighting for his life after an ambush, Sheriff Josh Wellman awakes to find himself looking into the eyes of a real-life angel of mercy. Despite his groggy condition, he knows his life has changed the instant their hands touch.

Devastating heartbreak has left Mercy Smith's faith in tatters, her heart guarded against more loss. Her dedication to the air evac trauma team she leads has insulated her from the realities of the earth below, so now Josh faces the biggest challenge of his life.

Can he find a way around the walls that fortify her heart and convince this angel to stay on the ground with him? Can Mercy open herself to life again and find a way to restore her faith in God ... as well as love?

Enjoy an excerpt:

There were ample hands ready to do just that. Less than five minutes were required to load the patient and get the crew back in their seats before the helicopter took flight again. They had no time to waste, and the race with the invisible, yet ever-ticking, clock had begun.

Mercy began her in-flight assessment, speaking through the mike inside her helmet that linked her with the medical team at the hospital. Onboard technology allowed the doctors to hear her and monitor the patient’s vital readings in order to make the calls on what meds needed to be pushed in-flight. She and Paul worked quickly with long-practiced ease in the tight confines of the jet craft. For the time being, the patient held his own.

Mercy looked again at the readout from the overhead blood pressure machine. Her glance then fell to the face of the patient. She caught a slight flicker of his eyelids as he tried to lift them. On his second attempt, she found herself the focus of the bluest eyes she had ever seen. The thought came briefly that, given another situation, they might be quite mesmerizing, almost like watching the still waters of a serene lake. She hastily pushed the unbidden and whimsical thought to the side and returned to a professionally focused mindset. The oxygen mask kept him from speaking, but his eyes were quite eloquent and anything but calm, holding a mixture of pain, fear, and questions.

“Hang in there.” She tried to reassure him with her practiced, soothing tones. “We’ll have you on the ground at the hospital in just a few minutes. Squeeze my hand if you can understand me.” She placed her hand under his. Very slowly, long fingers moved to grasp hers. “Good job.”

Lemongrass Hope by Amy Impellizzeri - Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Amy Impellizzeri will be awarding a signed copy of the book (US Only) and a $15 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five Things We Might Not Know About Amy

Fun!
Ok. Here goes.

1. Like Ian in Lemongrass Hope, I’m a pretty good craps player. My husband and I once sat next to John McCain at a craps table in Vegas. He rolled dice for over an hour. When we finally left the table, we thanked him for his service … and the $900 his roll had won for us!

2. I’m not afraid of spiders, snakes, tunnels, or the Bermuda Triangle. The only thing I’m currently afraid of are 90 degree water park slides which my oldest always insists I go on with him.

3. I go to a lot of fundraising events, and I have pretty decent luck at the silent auctions. Probably because I usually bid on things no one else is bidding on!

4. I’ve never missed a deadline – either as a writer or a lawyer. Once, a brief of mine was stuck in a fed ex warehouse not too far from my office – in danger of missing its due date - and I convinced a delightful security guard to let me climb up on the warehouse conveyor belt – in my navy blue lawyer suit and block heels in order to sort through the packages to find and retrieve my brief so I would not miss the deadline. True story.

5. The original version of Lemongrass Hope had a character that shared the name of an old boyfriend. (I won’t tell you which boy or which character). Just before the book went to print, I changed the name to avoid, you know, confusion. :-)

Set in the past, and present, LEMONGRASS HOPE is a captivating and unpredictable love story, with a dose of magical realism and time travel. LEMONGRASS HOPE weaves together ordinary lives and events to tell an extraordinary tale of connection, loss, renewal, and of course, hope. As Kate Sutton's decade-long marriage to Rob erodes and unravels, Kate fears that the secrets she guards from the world, including Rob's emergency room proposal, and a whirlwind love affair from her past, have always doomed her fate. When Kate unwittingly receives a glimpse at what her life could have been had she made different choices all those years ago, it is indeed all she could have ever wanted. A confirmation of her greatest hope ... and her greatest fears. Read the book hailed by New York Times Best-selling authors and reviewers, including Jacquelyn Mitchard, Oprah's very first book club selection author.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“It seems you did not actually read my amazing piece on all of this in Time Travel, Inc.”

Kate laughed. “Is that for real? The real name of your magazine?”

“Well, yes. Seems it caused a bit of confusion with my Botswanan guide, as well. He saw me faxing some notes back to my editor and asked if I was really writing about time travel.”

“So you told him yes, naturally.”

“I actually did.” Ian looked only mildly sheepish when he said this.

“Anyway, that Botswanan guide invited me to drinks the next day. They make a drink down there from the fruit of the marula tree. It’s known to cure disease and do all sorts of things. So, over this decadent marula tree booze, my guide told me a story of a mystic in the delta who swears that through some combination of the fermented marula tree fruit and Botswanan agate, he can make things happen.”

“What things?”

“Well, time travel, of course.”

For a moment, Kate thought Ian was mocking her, or perhaps was a complete lunatic, but then he burst out laughing. “I know, crazy right? That’s what marula drink will do to you. At any rate, I have spent the last six months trying to convince my editor that there is another story down there in the delta – something about the mystic and the agate and the marula. And I’ve finally succeeded. If nothing else, I’m going to treat myself to one helluva marula drunk.”

Kate stopped eating and blinked hard at her plate of curry. She could not help but wonder what it would be like to drink marula booze in the Botswanan delta with this handsome man who seemed like he just might believe in time travel.

And who was making her want to believe as well.
