Murder in Rock & Roll Heaven by Robin Ray

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Robin Ray will be awarding a $30 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Over the past few years, I’ve released books in several genres. “Tears of A Clown” is horror. “Murder in Rock & Roll Heaven” is mystery/sci-fi. “Stranded in Paradise” is historical fiction. “Commoner the Vagabond” is general fiction about a man with Asperger’s trying his best to navigate through this thing we call life. My upcoming book is called “Obey the Darkness: Horror Stories.” That said, if I was to pinpoint my “main” genre I’d lean towards horror. I find horror easier to write than, say, sci-fi. From an economic standpoint it’s easier to film, too. I suppose I read horror because I like a good scare and, psychologically, it’s a release, as I often liken the monsters to being bad bosses, abusive parents, bullies, thugs, loud people in public libraries, and so on.

What research is required?

As a writer, you have to build a set, sort of as if you were making a film and was employed as the set designer to realize the director’s vision. Of course, as the writer, you are the director. Since you also set the mood, you’re the score creator. The characters have to get dressed by you, so that automatically makes you the clothing designer. You are your own consultant to the script; all the research for your production has to be done by you. For sci-fi, this includes poring though encyclopedias and technical journals online, reading the notes of respected and accomplished scientists, taking a closer look at how infrastructures are created and maintained, and having a basic understanding of how machinery, weapons, vehicles, etc are used. Because “Murder in Rock & Roll Heaven” took place in a whole new world, I had to design the city, angels, clothes, food, jobs, agriculture, etc. One element that was new to me in writing “Murder” was trying to come up with a plant that would serve as their main crop. I thought it’d be a cool idea if one plant was their “manna,” so to speak. After looking at quite a few, I decided on flax because of its many uses. From paint to clothes to bread to soap to linen to medicine, its uses seemed endless. I guess the Romans didn’t call it Linum usitatissimum, or most useful plant, for nothing.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

The hero, Det. Gregory Angelicus, is a weisenheimer, a jokester, a clown who does take his job seriously but also likes levity every so often. When faced with the whole new world of Heaven, he could’ve simply succumbed to the uniqueness of it and turned into a slobbering idiot in a psych ward somewhere. He didn’t. Unafraid to ask questions, he pressed on. Consequently, if I learned anything from him, is how to be resilient.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I like to set the mood in action scenes by listening to driving soundtracks; otherwise, I prefer writing in silence. Also, since I tend to get distracted by people where I live in a transitional shelter, I have to write at night when everyone’s asleep, usually 10 pm to 6 am. And, of course, I have to write with internet access to fact check my work; unfortunately, this shelter has a poor wi-fi connection, so the fact checking bit can be a bit difficult sometimes.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Definitely a plotter. I write from an outline. Kudos to those who can write a mystery, horror or sci-fi by just winging it. Maybe in 10 years I might be able to do that.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

To my right is a kitchen wall; I write in my kitchen.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

My next book is called “Obey the Darkness: Horror Stories.” I actually finished it, or should I say, abandoned it, last week and have already sent queries out to a few publishers. It’d be nice to have it out in time for the Halloween season.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Nope, no question. Just a statement. To wit: Thanks for stopping by It’s Raining Books. I’m glad to be hosted here.

No one ever "re-dies" in Heaven; unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to singer Amy Winehouse. Her death, an unprecedented event in Heaven's history, has thrown a once docile world into unfortunate chaos. Because of the new uneasy alliance between angels and citizens, a freshly-arrived detective in the rock & roll town has been tasked with investigating the prime suspects, the members of the 27 Club - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. To make matters worse, a powerful angel from one of the upper levels of Heaven will soon arrive to make her ten-year inspection, a task that fills the other angels with dread since she has the power to banish anyone of them to the underworld. So, with time running out, the PI and his newly acquired sidekick, both aided by rock legends such as Eddie Cochran, Mama Cass, Kurt Cobain, Karen Carpenter and others, must quickly uncover the mystery that threatens not only to close Heaven’s doors forever, but promises to send a ripple effect through the entire universe that can rip it apart.

Read an excerpt:

5:15 PM and still no Jim Douglas Morrison. The bearded singer of ‘Five to One’ was keeping his company of three waiting: Gregory pacing back and forth in front of the window, Tony spinning around on a padded, reclining office chair pretending to understand what he was reading from the law book opened in his hands, and the polygraph monitor, Eric Witherspoon, himself a past bassist in a bar band from Nebraska and former student of the angel D’Ariel. Eric, the recent consumer of four slices of 6-cheese pizzas, three stuffed cheesy breads, one piece of chocolate cake and a giant-sized cup of organic, craft brewed root beer, was comfortably sleeping with folded arms in his reclined chair. Completely forgetting he was with company, he twisted to one side, eased off his butt, and made a fart sound so loud and wet he’d better check his drawers, like, immediately. Gregory opened the window to spare himself the pleasure of the cheese-inspired wind. Just then, Jim came staggering into the office, his pants wet from who knows what, his shirt disheveled, and a road sign in his hand. Instinctively, the PI and Tony helped him sit in a chair before he collapsed on the floor.

“Before you fellas start lecturing me,” Jim managed to spit out, albeit slurred, “just know I have a history of being fashionably late.”

“What is this?” Gregory asked, pointing to the road sign as the examiner woke up.

“What?” the confused singer asked then look down and noticed the wooden item.

“Who gave this to me?” he asked, stunned. Nevertheless, he read the sign:

Jupiter Barbers – Luxury Styles

“Anybody want a haircut?” he laughed. Not amused, Gregory wrestled the sign from the singer and placed in on the desk. “Come here and give me some love,” Jim beckoned the small gathering, outstretching his arms for an embrace; when no one accepted his offer, crestfallen, he folded them across his chest. “You guys are chumps,” he groaned. “I want my money back.”

Has a wedding planner with a commitment phobia finally found the man to make her fall head over heels in love?

Reagan Richardson loves planning extravagant, classy weddings as the head planner of Precious Moments Events. Though the notion of walking down the aisle has never entered her mind … considering none of her boyfriends have ever lasted long enough thanks to her. However, meeting Dr. Blake Harrison changes all of that in a glance and she finds herself in uncharted territory.

Blake knows all about Reagan’s fear of commitment but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing the ravishing beauty. Breaking down the wall guarding her heart isn’t as easy as he thought but being with Reagan has stirred emotions in him that no other woman ever has. Can he convince her that history isn’t going to repeat itself this time around?

Read an excerpt:

“And you’re going to try parasailing? I’m driving the speedboat.”

The thought of being attached to a parachute high above the ocean while dragged by a speedboat made Reagan nauseous. “I’m still contemplating, but I will go jet skiing with you.”

“Perfect. Can’t wait either way. I don’t care what we do as long as I see your fine bod in a bikini.”

Heat rushed to her cheeks. Blake always knew what to say to make her weak at the knees. Now she had to go shopping to find a sexy new bikini and a cover-up considering it was a family outing. She couldn’t be too sexy.

“You just concentrate on keeping me safe on the jet ski and the parasailing.”

“So, that’s a yes to the parasailing?”

“Mmm … only if you go really slow.”

“I’ll drive at whatever speed you can handle,” he said in a low, deep voice. “Just scream out my name when you’re comfortable and want me to go faster.”

“You have a dirty mind, Doc.” Not that I care.

“What?” he asked in an innocent manner. “That’s your mind in the gutter. Just want to make sure you can handle the excitement and stamina of it all. It’s a very … uh, thrilling adventure.”

“I bet it is.”

“Can’t wait for you to find out.”

“Are we still discussing parasailing?” she asked, crossing and uncrossing her legs. This conversation was causing her to have the urge to jump in the car and speed to his bed where he’d just finished his nap.

“Were we ever talking about parasailing?”

Across Two Novembers: A Year in the Life of a Blind Bibliophile by David L. Faucheux

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. David will be awarding a library edition audio book (US only) or if an international winner, a $15 Amazon/BN GC, to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five Things You Might Not Know About David L. Faucheux

1. Speed Demon or Too many books, too little time:
I speed listen to my audio books; it’s similar to your speed reading print books. Take a look at how: http://www.katc.com/story/34517232/whats-your-story-episode-8-lafayette

2. Happiness in a Bottle or Aromacologically yours:
I want to have a fragrance developed just for me. Why should the celebrities have all the fun! I have read about aroma therapy and think it would be interesting. I am so tired of being told what to like, having this and that odoriferous junk shoved at me by sales people who know nothing of the craft and tradition of the great fashion houses and their aromatic accomplishments. Would my signature scent contain hyraceum, ambroxan, chypre or fougère notes? Look out Osmothèque, think fragrance library, here I come.

3. Dvorak or As easy as A, O, E:
I want to be the world’s fastest blind typist. I learned the Dvorak layout but have had no end of trouble searching for a new keyboard. Mine is getting old. For those curious minds out there who want to know, the Dvorak layout rearranges the letters of the alphabet such that typing is easier on the hands. The most commonly used letters are on the home row: AOEU ID HTNS. The QWERTY layout was deliberately made to slow the typist down because the mechanism that struck the letters would jam.

4. Travel or The grass is “always” greener:
I want to live one year in a foreign country. It can be an English-speaking country such as Australia, England, or Canada.

5. Hack Attack or Wouldn’t it be nice:
I wish I had the cerebral gifts to become a hacker. An e-friend hinted he makes $300 an hour and he’s blind! I know few blind people making that kind of money. Not all of my blind friends are employed. I know how that can feel.

Lagniappe.
Let me explain, using material from my A Year in the Life of a Blind Bibliophile. “In Louisiana, there exists the custom of lagniappe. The word is derived from the Quechua (or Inca) language of South America and was brought to New Orleans by the Spanish Creoles. Broadly, it refers to the practice by merchants of including a bit of unexpected extra with a purchase.”

6. Suede Gloves or What do those pages really feel like:
I want to examine old books. I wonder what pages in the Gutenberg Bible feel like. Is vellum like suede, and is parchment similar? What would a papyrus feel like? Or Johnson’s famous dictionary – bibliographical and lexicographical minds want to know.

PS Scopist refers to scoping, a kind of legal editing associated with court reporters.

Friends and family. Restaurants and recipes. Hobbies and history. TV programs the author loved when he could see and music he enjoys. The schools he attended and the two degrees he attained. The career that eluded him and the physical problems that challenge him. And books, books, books: over 200 of them quoted from or reviewed. All In all, an astonishing work of erudition and remembrance.

Introduction

More than at any other time, when I hold a beloved book in my hand, my limitations fall from me, my spirit is free. —Helen Keller (1880–1968)

I have long wanted to write and publish something, be it an historic novel, a young adult novel, or nonfiction. When, in November 2013, Dr. Katherine Schneider asked me to read and review her just–published Occupying Aging, I conquered my usual reservations: Would I be a good reviewer? Would I be able to write something interesting and help her book sales? I dove in and came up with this review, which appeared on www.goodreads.com:

This book, with its mixture of the quotidian and sublime, stands as an interesting glimpse into the life of one early 21st–century woman. Schneider, a retired psychologist, recounts a year of thoughts and events in this journal. Her ruminations on death, spirituality, dogs, and navigating the landscape of the sighted as a totally blind inhabitant of her Wisconsin college town are enlightening. Touches of humor involving Fran, her Seeing Eye® dog, add a sense of fun.

As someone who is acquainted with Dr. Schneider (we have exchanged emails), I could wish I occupied my 40s quite as well as she does her 60s. The proactive attempts to educate about disability issues, the volunteering, and the public speaking are outstanding. Maybe some of her enthusiasm for life will rub off on all her readers.—An excellent vade mecum, a handbook, for handling the uncertainties of retirement.

While reading her book and formulating my review, I thought, Oh! I just might be able to write something in this journal–type format. So I jumped in right then, not waiting to begin on the more traditional January 1. I thought that to wait was to postpone indefinitely and fail; to start could mean a chance at a successful resolution. Who says a journal has to run from January 1 to December 31 to be of interest?

So, everyone, here goes nothing!

About the Author: I’m pleased to take a moment to talk about myself and what makes me tick. I’d have to say books, books, and more books. Let me explain. Braille and recorded books take me places and show me things I would otherwise never get to encounter. They see for me by their descriptions, their vivid word pictures, and lyrical prose. They befriend me when I'm lonely, educate me when I'm curious, and amuse me when I'm in a blue mood. I have always known I could pick up a book and for a time be in a better or at least A different place. Books don't judge, ignore, or marginalize us. I remember long, hot, Louisiana summers that were perfect for curling up with a good book. I have had to struggle some nights to put the book away because I’d not be able to get up for work the next morning. That’s being a bit too biblioholic.

I have worked as a medical transcriptionist and braille instructor. I attended library school in the late 1990s when the Internet was starting to take off. I ran an audio blog for several years. I have also served on the board of a nonprofit organization that attempted to start a radio reading service in the town where I live. Since 2006, I have reviewed audio books for Library Journal.

Read an excerpt:

Glazed, cryptic eyes pierced through me, reminding me of a strung-out junky. His face seemed vaguely familiar, right down to his golden curls. Just couldn’t put my finger on where I’d seen him before. An eerie thrill rippled my spine. The way he was staring creeped me out. I quickly skirted past him, only to have Blondie clasp my arm. Okay, now I was officially freaked.

“Let go of me!” I seethed.

“The time has come,” he blurted.

“What are you talking about?”

“The decision is made … binding.”

This dude was clearly psycho. He spoke in riddles, none of which I understood. “You’ve got me confused with someone else.”

“No, you’re the one.”

My purse, where I normally kept my Taser, was nowhere to be found. He’d better be glad or I’d light his ass up. This whole scene was turning more bizarre by the second. I couldn’t figure out where I was. My surroundings were dim and heat began to consume me. Blondie leaned closer to me. Being nearer, I got a better look at his dilated eyes. His pupils were diamond-shaped, not the usual round. His grip tightened.

“Asshole. Take your hands off me!”

“You’re chosen, and you’re coming with me.”

Though I struggled against him, it didn’t do any damn good. Bright light blazed up ahead, mixed with smoldering heat. I soon realized the light and scalding warmth was coming from giant flames. Doubling my efforts, I fought harder, to no avail. Blondie’s face became a blur, and darkness encompassed me—the scalding heat grew stronger. Time seemed to stand still—my mind swirled in a haze. The only thought that became clear, which seemed to chisel into my mind, was that I had to make the right choice.

They called themselves Omega Men. Athena Madero left the police department angry at all the restrictions she faced as she tried to fight crime. Grey and Athena collided, literally, when both were working a covert investigation, the resolution of which resulted in the birth of The Omega Team. Others will join them as the agency expands its scope of activities to range from hostage negotiation and rescue to industrial espionage to fighting drug cartels to threats to national security. Dangerous Pursuit by McKenna Jeffries

Going after what you want isn’t usually a problem yet this time it’s more important than any other and it will take careful maneuvering to win this dangerous pursuit…

Jana Taylor didn’t shy away from anything or anyone. Working with a lawyer wasn’t usually an issue but it was him. The infuriating man who set her on edge and made her want to deck him as well as kiss him equally. It was a routine escort for some business for the company she worked for or so it should have been. Now they were in danger and they didn’t know if it was because of the company she worked for or something Elliot did for his law firm. Figuring it out would be fun since she loved puzzles but working with him not so much. Elliot didn’t seem to understand that he was in danger and it was her job to protect him. His stubborn instance he could protect himself would either get him killed or she would give into temptation and deck him…or maybe kiss him. Possibly both.

Elliot Stephenson wasn’t about to hide from anything or anyone. In his family you stood up and fought. According to what was needed it could be dirty or giving someone a fair shot. Either way it was ingrained in him to win any battle in and out of the boardroom. Almost dying wasn’t something he usually had to handle in his job as a corporate lawyer but since someone tried to kill him then he would adapt. Now it was his goal to get to the bottom of who it was then eliminate the problem. Having her—Jana Taylor—who was determined to protect him by his side was a good thing. For him. He’d been wondering how he’d get her to stop avoiding him and face what was simmering between them. Now with their circumstances she would have no choice. He wasn’t going to just be a protectee and would take part in protecting himself but he also knew he needed her. Not just to save his life but to also become part of it.

When stubbornness meets an obstacle they cannot overcome they have to learn to work together to embrace the dangerous pursuit.

Although McKenna used to make up stories she never thought to put them on paper until....she realized the stories would keep filling her until they were written. An itchy feeling in her fingers fills her until she can get a piece of paper to write it down. She writes because it's a love affair. Writing is in her blood and she enjoys taking readers on a journey.

With so many ideas filling her, McKenna is always hard at work.

Retribution by Jett Munroe (Cindy Garner)

Bryson Montgomery works computer magic for the Omega Team. Her extraordinary ability to access and maneuver around the Dark Web, that portion of the Deep Web where criminals conduct their business, has made an enemy who’s out to end her life. But who is it?

Oliver Lowell, former Special Air Service officer and current mercenary, met Bryson through freelancing work he’s done for Omega. They fell in lust immediately and have been content to keep their intimate relationship a secret from the others. When her adversary blows up her apartment, Oliver is tasked with protecting her. Not just because she’s on vacation in London, his hometown, but, more importantly for him, because she’s the most essential person in his world. He’ll protect her from this unknown enemy or die trying.

Her adversary follows them to a castle-cum-hotel in West Sussex, where Oliver’s skills are put to the test. Bryson’s life is on the line; failure is not an option. He must stop her enemy before their dark retribution can end the woman he loves.

Seal Escort by Delilah Devlin

When “Snake” McPherson is assigned to guard a social media star, he’s not pleased. Edgy after back-to-back tours in the sandbox, the last thing he wants is to tail some “selfie-princess”. Worse, the spoiled little rich girl doesn’t want anyone to know that’s his purpose. No, she insists that he pretend to be her paid escort for a party on some billionaire’s private island. Worse, the woman doesn’t understand personal boundaries, that clothes aren’t optional, and takes risks that make his teeth grind in frustration. But that’s not the only thing about her causing him frustration…

Until recently, award-winning romance author Delilah Devlin lived in South Texas at the intersection of two dry creeks, surrounded by sexy cowboys in Wranglers. These days, she’s missing the wide-open skies and starry nights but loving her dark forest in Central Arkansas, with its eccentric characters and isolation—the better to feed her hungry muse!

For Delilah, the greatest sin is driving between the lines, because it’s comfortable and safe. Her personal journey has taken her through one war and many countries, cultures, jobs, and relationships to bring her to the place where she is now—writing sexy adventures that hold more than a kernel of autobiography and often share a common thread of self-discovery and transformation.

Recon Strong by Krista Ames

Dirk Rockwell knew when he left the Marines that he wanted to be in private security. The need to protect had been ingrained in his brain for too many years not to. Lately, however, it was really taxing his nerves. He was used to killing if he needed to, to protect his charge, not step in between a disgruntled husband and wife during a domestic dispute. When he took on the latest assignment to protect a woman who’d snapped one too many secret photographs, he’d only agreed because an old friend had recommended him. Meeting Avery proved to him that not all women needed protection equally.

Avery Hanson lived for the rush of almost getting caught. That’s why she chose freelance photography as a profession. The sticky part was when she did get caught. However, this time wasn’t like the usual quick brush with the local law where she could talk herself out of it with a slap on the hand. She’d somehow gotten mixed up in some nasty hush hush with the federal government. This time, she didn’t just need out of yet another mess, she needed help staying alive.

Without the necessary channels to cover both their asses, Dirk enlists the help of The Omega Team. But will it be enough to keep him from losing his charge and his heart?

The Laird Takes a Bride by Lisa Berne

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Three digital copies of the book will be awarded to three randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Alasdair Penhallow, laird of his clan and master of Castle Tadgh, is forced to end his carefree bachelorhood, thanks to an ancient decree that requires him to marry. But Alasdair’s search for a biddable wife comes to a screeching halt when Fate serves up Fiona Douglass. Prickly as a thistle, Fiona challenges him at every turn, rendering herself surprisingly irresistible. Her love would be a prize indeed . . . if Alasdair could accept it.

Fiona gave her heart once, and doesn’t plan to repeat that folly. Yet she finds herself drawn to Alasdair’s intelligence and strength, and the passion he incites goes well beyond her expectations for what’s only a marriage of expedience. Despite herself, she’s falling in love with her husband.

But there’s a high wall between them—and Fiona’s not sure it can ever be torn down.

Read an Excerpt:

Wondering where his shoes had gone, Alasdair looked down to see his wolfhound Cuilean at his feet. Intelligent dark eyes were looking up at him inquiringly, shaggy ears were pricked: a hint, Alasdair knew, that breakfast was long overdue. He reached down a hand to caress that rough head, and as he did so Cuilean sharply turned it, toward an archway leading off toward the kitchens.

Fervently did Alasdair hope it was a servant, bearing a refreshing tankard of ale (or even a silver pot filled to the brim with blisteringly hot coffee), but no, it was Dame Margery, quite possibly the oldest member of the clan, hunched over her gnarled stick and stumping into the Hall. Trailing behind was her little granddaughter Sheila, who viewed the dissolute scene before her with blasé indifference, her expression, distinguished by eyes which seemed to gaze in two different directions at once, seeming more focused on something immaterial and inward — and for that Alasdair could only be thankful, as uneasily he wondered if a seven-year-old really ought to be in the Great Hall at this particular moment.

As Dame Margery drew near, she noisily banged her stick on the marble floor, causing people nearby to stir, moan, rouse. She passed by Uncle Duff, insensate, draped sideways on a chair and his long beard dangling perpendicularly, and muttered audibly, “Ach, the old wastrel!” before turning her piercing and unblinking stare to Alasdair. Finally she stopped before the dais on which the two great chairs — one for the laird, one (long unoccupied) for his lady — stood. Her silence, Alasdair noticed, had a heavy, expectant, rather ominous sort of quality, and he groaned under his breath. He wasn’t in the mood for drama. Still, he was the laird, and one must be polite, so he cleared his throat and said:

“Good day to you, madam.”

“And to you, laird,” she answered with an awful, punctilious politeness. “May I tender my congratulations to you on your birthday.”

“I thank you.”

“I believe I am correct, laird, that as of yesterday you turned thirty-five?”

“Aye, madam.”

“Not thirty-four, laird?”

“Nay, thirty-five, madam.”

“Not married, are you, laird?”

Alasdair looked narrowly at Dame Margery. Had she gone soft in her aged head? Everyone knew he was unmarried and, in fact, happily so. But courteously he replied: “Nay, madam, I’m not.”

“Well then, laird, perhaps you are not aware of the ancient clan decree which dictates that any chieftain of Castle Tadgh who remains unmarried by his thirty-fifth birthday must immediately invite the eligible highborn maidens of the Eight Clans of Killaly to stay within the castle, and within thirty-five days choose one to be his bride?”

Dame Margery issued this disconcerting pronouncement in stentorian tones and with a single breath, leaving her gasping a little by the end. She breathed in deeply, then added sternly:

“The wedding to follow within thirty-five days.”

A sufficient number of people had woken up by now to create a stunned, openmouthed audience for Dame Margery, who seemed well satisfied by the effect of her words. Alasdair sat upright, jostling the black-haired lass who let out a choked snore but remained blissfully asleep. He stared balefully at her and then at Dame Margery as the unpleasant import of her proclamation sank in.

“And if I don’t obey?” he said, losing a little of his earlier politeness.

“Death to you, I fear,” the old crone replied with annoying promptitude. “Hanged and quartered, laird, and your head displayed in the courtyard as a warning to all who leave off their sacred duty to the clan.”

Dark Genius by H. Peter Alesso

To the insatiably curious—science is the greatest adventure. So, when scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the ‘God’ particle in 2012, all the world wondered, “How did they find it?”

A decade later, despite his past academic failures and egregious family circumstance, Andrew Lawrence embarked on a journey of discovery, competing against rival scientists to be the first to solve the greatest unsolved mystery of the universe—dark matter—and win the ultimate prize; the Nobel.

Emma Franklin, a PhD candidate at Harvard, developed software for detecting particle reactions using a quantum computer. To the amazement and excitement of the scientific community, her work revealed two possible bumps in the energy curve that were not predicted by any established theory.

At MIT, Lawrence created a model that predicted the scattering processes of a dark matter supersymmetry particle. Though his early work was disparaged, he improved his theory and found that it predicted the data Emma had discovered. Their professional collaboration deepened into a personal relationship, but when critical data was stolen, Emma found evidence that incriminated Lawrence. Though she withheld the impeaching material from the authorities, she felt she could no longer trust him.

Despite their troubled partnership, and notwithstanding the complexities of nature, Lawrence and Emma persevered against the egos, jealousy, and envy of rivals, on their exhilarating quest to find the ‘Holy Grail’ of physics

Read an excerpt:

In one well-lit corner, Professor Stanley Prost sat at his desk studiously examining a computer screen. His long straight nose, jutting prominent chin, and carbon black eyes, gave the appearance of a man not to be trifled with. He held his hand to his brow, masking his eyes, as if to conceal his innermost thoughts. However, his red pitted skin and the twitchy lips destroyed any semblance of a distinguished pose. His overweight frame and slumped shoulders made him look like a bloated figure despite his close-cropped hair and clean-shaven face. An expensive, but ill-fitting suit, hung like a sack over his body leaving an overall appearance of discomfort.

While Prost rapidly slid his finger across the computer screen, Lawrence stood waiting like a statue. He let his gaze wandered to the scene visible from the window—scampering students making their way on their personal college adventure.

Finally, without extending his hand, or looking directly at his visitor, Prost ordered, “Sit.”

“Thank you, Professor,” said Lawrence in a clear strong voice, despite a peculiar stir of emotions—doubt, tension, apprehension. He had prior experience with this man—with unhappy consequences.

Prost leaned forward and curled his lip as he spat out the words, “Your postdoc appointment was made by the Professor Lloyd—during my absence—without any input from me.”

Lawrence’s eyes darkened to match his tousled hair, but he remained quiet for what seemed a portentous moment. He clenched his teeth and was self-conscious of a bead of sweat on his brow.

Prost waved his right hand in the air and said, “I took no pleasure in the failing grades I gave you, some years ago. Your dismissal from MIT was unfortunate, but I wasn’t the only professor who was disenchanted with a prodigy who skipped classes, took exams cavalierly, and disrupted class with impertinent questions.”

Lawrence shifted in his chair, uncomfortably.

I’m to be rebuked for the sins of the past.

Entromancy by M.S. Farzan

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

That’s a great question! I started reading fantasy at an early age, and I’ve always felt drawn to the genre. I think whenever you spend time with something, whether it be reading in a genre or learning a new hobby, it’s natural to want to start making your own mark in that discipline. I started writing my own stories many years ago, and the hobby turned into a profession. Now it just feels like home.

What world-building is required?

Quite a bit of world-building is required, at least for the genre of novels that I write! It’s very important to me that characters, locations, political systems, magic, and action all feel natural and internally cohesive. Before writing the original manuscript for Entromancy, I spent about four years making notes about character backgrounds, world history, and magic systems, to make sure that I had a strong base that could be conveyed throughout the narrative. I’m currently working on a roleplaying game based on the Entromancy world, and it’s helping me further develop these core concepts.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Eskander gets beat up a lot and is teaching me that no matter how many times you get knocked down, you must always get back up and try again.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Not really! When I first started writing, I definitely ritualized my writing process, but that’s been beaten out of me after years of working for fast-paced editorial websites and video game companies. They tend to have quick deadlines and intense turnaround times. I kind of miss having a steady writing location and schedule, but have become accustomed to writing anywhere, and in the in-between spaces of the day.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Plotter for sure. I’m always thinking through character motivations and plot arcs, and usually draft a chapter outline before getting to the nitty-gritty of building a narrative.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

It may sound cliché, but I have a paperback copy of Entromancy sitting on the desk to my right. I try to keep one nearby at all times, in case I need it for reference or as a quick gift to someone.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Quite a whole lot, in fact! I’m working on Technomancy, the second book in The Nightpath Trilogy, and have just completed the manuscript for a separate, standalone young adult novel.

Do you have a question for our readers?

I’d love to know what kinds of hobbies you have. Do you write as well? Let me know!

2076 is not a good year to be a special agent. A quarter of the world's power runs on ceridium, a newly discovered element that has had the unintended consequence of spawning a new race of people, and several forms of magic that were once thought to have been forgotten. Eskander Aradowsi is an agent of NIGHT, a paramilitary force created to contain and control this new perceived threat, but he soon learns that not all within his organization is as it seems. A botched mission turns out to be the least of his troubles, when he unearths a plot that threatens the uneasy truce between the aurics and humans of San Francisco, and centers on a form of magic that toys with the very fabric of the universe: Entromancy.

Read an excerpt:

I fought to stay calm. I could hear my pulse pounding in my ears, matching the drumming in my temple, and I kept forgetting to breathe. I hedged, knowing that I could leave, taking the auric with me for questioning, but I wouldn’t have time to evacuate the people upstairs. I wasn’t familiar with being unsure of my next course of action, and I didn’t care for the feeling.

I had neither the time to give the defuse protocol another try nor the skillset to hack into the device and do it the hard way. I synced the timer with my digitab and saw the countdown appear in my lenses. Pocketing the digitab, I released my knee from the auric’s throat and grabbed him by the collar.

“What’s the code?” I snarled at him.

“What?” he said thickly. I could see the blood staining his white teeth.

“Don’t play stupid with me,” I said, shaking him. “What’s the code?”

“The hell, man? What code?”

I could see that he had no idea what I was talking about. I glanced back at the bomb and up at the time display. 21:27:24, three minutes and thirty-six seconds.

The auric craned his neck to follow my gaze, then looked at me. I could see understanding register in his eyes.

“We’re dead?” he queried.

I nodded absently, reaching for another ceridium capsule. Prying off a glove with my teeth, I reached out towards the device.

The auric’s hand shot up and grabbed weakly at my wrist. “You’re going to kill us, man!” he protested.

“Probably!” I looked back towards a side entrance next to the counter. “Can you open that?”

He hesitated, then nodded slightly.

“Do it,” I said. He got up slowly and trotted over to the door.

But when her happily ever after is interrupted by the disappearance of the town’s wise woman, she rushes in to investigate. Faced with dangers, dead bodies, and more mysterious disappearances, Tasmin and William must act fast to save their town and themselves – especially when Tasmin starts to be haunted by a most unwelcome ghost from her past…literally.

The Chocolatier’s Ghost is an enchanting sequel to Cindy Lynn Speer’s bestselling romantic mystery, The Chocolatier’s Wife.

Read an excerpt from THE CHOCOLATIER'S WIFE:

Time was, in the kingdom of Berengeny, that no one picked their spouses. No one courted—not officially, at any rate—and no one married in a moment’s foolish passion. It was the charge of the town Wise Woman, who would fill her spell bowl with clear, pure water; a little salt; and the essence of roses, and rosemary, and sage. Next, she would prick the finger of the newborn child and let his or her blood drip into the potion. If a face showed in the waters, then it was known that the best possible mate (they never said true love, for that was the stuff of foolish fancy) had been born, and the Wise Woman could then tell where the future spouse lived, and arrangements were made.

For the parents of William of the House of Almsley, this process would turn out to be less than pleasant.

The first year that the baby William’s finger was pricked and nothing showed, the Wise Woman said, “Fear not, a wife is often younger than the husband.”

The second, third, and even fifth year she said much the same.

But you see, since the spell was meant to choose the best match—not the true love—of the heart the blood in the bowl belonged to, this did not mean, as years passed, that the boy was special. It meant that he would be impossible to live with.

On his seventh birthday, it seemed everyone had quite forgotten all about visiting the Wise Woman until William, who knew this of long habit to be a major part of his day--along with cake, a new toy, and a new set of clothes--tugged on his mother’s skirt and asked when they were going. She stared at him a long moment, tea cup in hand, before sighing and calling for the carriage. She didn’t even bother to change into formal clothes this time, and the Wise Woman seemed surprised to see them at all. “Well, we might as well try while you’re here,” she said, her voice obviously doubtful.

William obediently held out the ring finger on his left hand and watched as the blood dripped into the bowl. “She has dark brown eyes,” William observed, “and some hair already.” He shrugged, and looked at the two women. “I suppose she’ll do. I’m just glad ‘tis over, and that I can go on with my life.”

“For you, perhaps,” his mother said, thinking of what she would now have to accomplish.

“Do not fret, mother, I shall write a letter to the little girl. Not that she can read it, anyway.” He petted his mother’s arm. He was a sweet boy, but he was always charging forward, never worrying about feelings.

The Wise Woman rolled out an elegantly painted silk map of the kingdom and all its regions, his mother smoothed the fabric across the table, and then the Wise Woman dipped a brass weight into the bowl. Henriette, William’s mother, placed her hands on William’s shoulders as the Wise Woman held the weight, suspended, over the map.

Henriette held her breath, waiting to see where it would land. Andrew, her younger son, had his intended living just down the street, which was quite convenient. At least they knew what they were getting into immediately.

The plumb-bob made huge circles around the map, spinning and spinning as the Wise Woman recited the words over and over. It stopped, stiffly pointing toward the North.

“Tarnia? Not possible, nor even probable. You must try again!”

For once, William’s mother wasn’t being stubbornly demanding. Tarnia, a place of cruel and wild magic, was the last place from whence one would wish a bride. They did not have Wise Women there, for anyone could perform spells. The Hags of the North ate their dead and sent the harsh winter wind to ravage the crops of the people of the South. Five hundred years ago, the North and the South had fought a bitter war over a cause no one could quite remember, only that it had been a brutal thing, and that many had died, and it led to the South losing most of its magic. Though the war was long over and the two supposedly united again, memory lingered. “I have cast it twice.” The Wise Woman chewed her lower lip, but therewas naught else she could do.

“Not Tarnia, please?” Henriette, usually a rather fierce and cold woman, begged.

“I am afraid so.” The Wise Woman began cleaning up; her shoulders set a little lower. “I am sorry.”

William, staring out the window at the children playing outside, couldn’t care less. What did it matter where anyone was from? She was a baby, and babies didn’t cause that much trouble.

“Only you, William,” his mother said, shaking her head. “Why can you not do anything normal?”

This was to be the tenor of most of their conversations throughout their lives.
