Read an excerpt from Chapter 7

“I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.” Jessica Rabbit

“I don’t care what they say about you, Dayna. You’ve got talent.”

“What?” Dayna’s head came up to stare at the screen where her boss sat in his office video-chatting with her the next morning. “What do you mean, Howard?”

Howard laughed. He reached down to take a mouthful of sandwich. A piece of egg salad hung from the side of his mouth.

“Nothing, babe. Just great article. You showed such sensitivity. I knew if you reached down deep enough, we’d find a heart in there.”

Dayna looked bleary eyed at the computer, shaking her head. Before she could respond, Howard continued, “Okay, I may have something else for you.” He picked up some papers on the desk and looked through them. “Let me see…Oh yeah, we could use something about hunting season opening. Tons of deer in the woods…and babe, don’t mention the wolf sightings.” He paused, eating. “I mean it, Dayna. This is your chance. Keep it to what I ask for. Don’t bring your own crazy ideas in and who knows where this thing will go?” He wiggled his eyebrows at her. “Hey, Dayna, you doing anything for dinner—?”

Dayna clicked off the computer, ending the video conference.

“I’d rather starve than eat with you,” she grumbled.

Dayna’s stomach rumbled, and she realized she hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday. She walked into her kitchen, looked in the fridge, and took out a yogurt.

The Seduction of Lady Phoebe by Ella quinn

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Ella Quinn will award a $25 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Polite society has its rules for marriage. But for Ella Quinn’s eligible bachelors, their brides will show them that rules are for the faint of heart . . .

Phoebe Stanhope is not a typical Lady. As feisty as she is quick witted, no one can catch her, especially when she is driving her dashing phaeton with its perfectly matched horses. And unlike her peers, experience has guarded her against a growing list of would-be suitors. But when she encounters Marcus Finley, what she fears most burns deep within his blue-eyed gaze . . .

For Lord Marcus, the spark of recognition is but a moment in the love he has held these many years. Now that he’s returned to England, all the happiness he desires rests on Lady Phoebe never finding out that he was the one who turned her heart so cold and distant. He must work fast to gain the advantage—to convince her what she wants is exactly what she denies—but in order to seduce her into his arms, he must be willing to give up more than he can control . . .

Read an Excerpt

Marcus Finley arrived at the White Horse Inn with his friend Robert, Viscount Beaumont, who had reserved rooms there. Marcus found chambers across the street at the Red Unicorn. They met later to dine in a private parlor Marcus hired.

“Quite good ordinary they have here.” Robert sat back in his chair, crossing one highly polished boot over the other. “The brandy is as good as any I’ve had. Must be French, though I don’t wish to know how the landlord came by it.”

Marcus grinned. “Yes, it’s very good and probably smuggled.”

Silence fell for a few moments, then Robert sat straight up in his chair. “Marcus, my boy, I saw the most beautiful gal I’ve ever seen in my life at the White Horse.”

Marcus lounged in his chair, lifting a brow in inquiry. Robert was known to be a favorite with the many disenchanted matrons of the ton.

“And where did you find this paragon of nature?” Marcus asked in a languid drawl. “In the tap?”

“No, no, my boy, not a game-pullet. Not at all. She was a lady.”

Marcus raised his quizzing glass and regarded his friend more closely. “Married?”

“No. Put that thing away, you know I don’t like it. Besides, there’s nothing wrong with me. She is a well-bred, unmarried lady. Beautiful, I tell you. Tiny. Has a good figure, quite a neat ankle, and the most gorgeous gold-red hair. Perfect in every way.”

Marcus’s fingers tightened around his glass. Robert’s conquests were legend, but they didn’t extend to well-bred innocents. A terrifying thought began to fill Marcus’s mind. It couldn’t be Phoebe. She was at Cranbourne Place.

He fought to keep his face calm, his gaze focused on his friend. “Who is this lady, do you know?”

“Yes, got my groom to ask one of the ostlers. Stupid fellows, those ostlers, giving out that kind of information,” Lord Beaumont ruminated, definitely on the go. “Yes, now that I think on it, I believe I shall have a word with the landlord. The servants ought not be giving that sort of thing out.”

Marcus tapped his fingers on the table. “Her name, Robert?”

“Her name?” Marcus repeated and waved an impatient hand to encourage his friend to continue.

“Oh, yes,” Robert finally said. “Lady Phoebe Stanhope. Heard of her of course. Never seen her before. Don’t, as a rule, attend those types of events. Not much for the Grand Strut you know. Must avoid the matchmaking mamas. M’grandmother’s been after me to marry. Lady Phoebe is a devilish good looking gal. I may have to make a push.”

Marcus fumed. Lady Phoebe. His Vision. Friends or no, he would be damned if he’d let Robert anywhere near her.

I closed my eyes to rest. However, I saw that a wound had been revealed to me. It wanted to be healed. Facing this would be a challenge but I knew it would be transformational. I had to be a champion of my own life, my own health. I had to address the deeper issue of what had caused my disease. With many months or doctor’s appointments, a dramatic change in diet, rest in spirit, and loving support from my closest people, I began to move into a new space of gentle love for myself. I was getting exactly what I needed to shift into healing mode. Even my doctor looked my husband straight in the eye and said, “Do not give Shari ANY emotional stress until she gets better.” Within weeks I was served with divorce papers. My husband told me he knew I was weak so he offered to drive me there to sign them.

That April in Santa Monica by Melody DeBlois

Five Things We’d Probably Never Guess About You

Long before I started writing Romance, I wrote for children and young adults. In fact, if someone had told me I’d end up writing contemporary romances, I’d have been in shock. My children were young back then, and as they grew, my targeted age group got older as well. My mind wound in the direction of the paranormal. I wrote mostly ghost stories, some scary as heck, others downright knee-slapping funny. Sadly, or maybe not, I didn’t sell any.

I have never admitted this to anyone, but I keep my healthy habits mainly because I want to write well. Ouch! That one hurt. No one centers their priorities around doing a better job. It’s a little crazy, but if I don’t get my daily swim, I can’t sit at my desk as long. If I don’t sleep at least seven hours, I can’t focus. Eat well to write well is my motto. A daily avocado keeps the brain sharper, and I need all the help I can get.

I discovered a yummy blender drink quite by accident. Tired of my usual banana milkshake, I tossed in a pinch of Pumpkin Spice, and, oh my gosh! Talk about scrumptiously rich. So here’s the deal. You put a bit of milk in the bottom of the blender and add ice, banana, honey, and plain Greek yogurt. Don’t forget your dash of Pumpkin Spice, then buzz away. You’ll have a drink to write home about.

No one would guess I arrived so late to the party, I watched Sex in the City for the first time last summer. During a girl’s weekend in Reno, my friends brought up the TV show so many times I began to feel deprived. I thought I’d give the first episode a try. Sure it was dated. People smoked for goodness sake, but I laughed at the great lines and antics. I loved the concept of a young journalist typing the theme of each story on her dinosaur of a computer. Soon, I was addicted. Even if I returned home late, I couldn’t go to bed without a dose of Sex in the City. In early October, the final season drew near a close. I felt as if I were losing my best friends. Now, I’m down to only two more shows. I can hardly bear it. I’m certain to suffer withdrawals.

I don’t usually talk about the fact that I cannot drink tea. I get hives—there it’s out of the bag. The only way I could cope was to give a character in my WIP the same affliction. And because the subject matter is so relevant to the story, I’ve been researching the blends and many strains of teas. I’ve learned some of the cultural, medicinal, and spiritual aspects. Sip, savor, slow down. It’s a step back from our Smartphones and social media. Drinking tea is something I long to partake in, even more so after studying the ritual. After all, whoever heard of a tea lover who must be content with hot water? Oh, well, at least I get to write about it.

Madison receives acclaim for running a talent agency for people with disabilities, but she doesn't know how to take care of herself. When her altruism becomes life-threatening—a matter of either develop healthy habits or die—she joins a reality TV show that pairs her with hot, raven-haired Brandon. He is witty, sexy, and her teacher. That makes him off limits.

After a successful run on a soap opera, Brandon stepped away from empty fame and now focuses on his work as TV's most noted health teacher. He has one fast rule—never fall for a student. But when he meets Madison, their chemistry is combustible. There's no hiding their conflict or their attraction, especially when it's all caught on film.

Read an Excerpt

On the beach, Madison started to gather energy, so that when they went into downward-facing dog, he discovered, with her well-earned agility, she didn’t bend her knees as usual.

“Madison, you’re touching the ground!”

She beamed up at him. “I am!”

She was unimaginably beautiful. The way the sun seized the golden streaks in her red hair, the way the natural wave framed her angular face, distracted him. He had his fantasies about her, and this was one of them. The two of them by themselves on the beach, doing yoga. The only problem? The usual. They were not alone.

Warrior pose brought with it an expression of victory on her part, and child’s pose caused her to fold up within herself like a flower after sunset. No woman had ever done the positions with as much raw sensuality. Being with her made him, the yogic practitioner, forget how to move and how to breathe.

This day she stood taller and bent farther. The muscles in her arms supported her with effortlessness. Even her hands seemed stronger than before. She balanced herself with greater ease, like a goddess surveying her kingdom by the sea. Brandon closed his eyes against the gush of erotic pictures she evoked in him. He had been with her too long, yet not long enough.

When they finished, she purred, “I just might learn to love this.”

“You did well.”

“Do you think it was the fancy yoga outfit?”

He shook his head. “Nah, I think it was the woman.”

Read an Excerpt

Wings burst from the doppelgänger-Shade’s back, massive and talon-tipped and tensile. They billowed, leathery and black as the forelimbs of a giant bat. Shadows shifted behind them as they spanned, making them appear to fill the width of the room. Patches of skin darkened and pebbled before ripping into tiny, hardened scales that gleamed in the soft glow of the containment tanks lining the walls, and bones elongated, protruding at knuckles, elbows, and clavicle, hulking the creature in both muscles and height until it towered over her. Two thickly ridged, ebony horns cut from its temples, banked in loose ash-brown locks that roiled about its shoulders. A long tail whipped against a tank, shattering glass.

She wanted to scream but couldn’t, numb, frozen like prey before a monster.

Shade’s demonic form speared her with eyes blacker than the depths of Hell, glistening with pure evil. They were the eyes of a creature that would suck out her soul and sanity and laugh at the corpse it left behind. This was what she’d always known in the back of her mind, that Shade was dangerous. That he was a born killer, a full-blooded Devil from the deepest regions of Hell.

No, wait. That wasn’t right. Sure, she was scared of Shade’s true form—he was a powerful and nightmarish-looking beast. But she also had flashes of him smiling and protecting her, worried and protecting her, laughing and crying and screaming her name, all while baring those same obsidian wings.

A gun was in her good hand, but she didn’t remember having drawn it. It wavered, trembling where it was outstretched.

Shoot, shoot to kill, a whispered voice not her own pounded in the back of her head, incessant. Shoot him before he turns on you, then shoot yourself.

With a start, she realized she’d aimed her sight at the real Shade’s back. She was a breath away from firing.

180 Days: A Teacher's Diary through One Epic School Year by Sofia Faye Burke

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Sofia Faye Burke will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

180 Days is a fly on the wall experience into a high school classroom over one full school year (180 days to be exact).

Written as a diary by a teacher who was struggling to cope with everything from educational reform to school shootings, this work unfolds via the teachers’ lens of controlled chaos in a broken system. This book takes the reader on a journey from the dilemma of how to make it to the restroom and back before the bell rings to the agony of an active shooter training day, including acceptance of a newfound form of professional development.

Mrs. Burke writes about the daily challenges and rewards of life within the four walls of her classroom. The work is gritty, hilarious, and heart breaking at the same time. Hang on, a school year is one wild ride.

Read an Excerpt

Day 19: The business manager of the district stopped in to grace me with his presence today during my class. Wow. I am honored but, er eh um. Awkward? Duh, uh, I am teaching a class. Does he see the students? Can’t say that to him, as he is one step away from superintendent. He had pressing matters that were of the utmost importance, hence the interruption of my instruction. He had to check on my new chairs that he so graciously purchased for my classroom and he had to lecture me about how important it is that the ‘el cheapo’ chairs not fall apart. There is history here.

The previous chairs they purchased for my classroom were of such poor construction that the screws in the backs of the chairs would twist out as if a ghost were using an invisible screwdriver and whoops, down goes another unsuspecting kid. Hence the work order. Come to think of it, maybe the school is haunted? Nah. One fine day, one of my football students stretched, the chair simply stretched with him and folded backwards like melting plastic. Rather frightening at the time as my helpless student was backward like a crab, feet and hands holding him in place. He was okay, but in the end, wheels continued to pop off with zero force and the backs of the chairs would rattle with loose screws. Oh, and the seat would snap in half if you were more than 100 pounds and did not sit precisely as to not have your cheeks caught in between hard plastic. Not comfortable and not cool. The new chairs he ordered are the same crappy plastic chairs we have breaking now. Not sure how to tell him that he chose poorly when ordering classroom furniture. I can’t bring myself to tell him of his poor choice as he gives me the creeps.

Handling the Rancher by Sara Ohlin

Thank you so much for having me on your blog!!!

#1. I am an Irish Twin. My older brother and I are 364 days apart. My mom didn’t believe the doctor when he told her she was pregnant again so quickly but sure enough, she was & here I am!! Growing up we always celebrated our birthdays together and my mom would make the most delicious chocolate, chocolate chip Bundt cake. Yum!

#2. I love to bake, but I don’t consider myself a real baker, more like a fraud who’s sneaking around. I have a goal to perfect the French macaron. My daughter and I have been making them for years and every time we move, each different oven we use sets us back a few steps. Such finicky, pretty cookies.

#3. My kids are 11 and 9 and I have never felt confident as a mother. Seriously hardest job I’ve ever had.

#4. Years ago I wrote a memoir about my dad and the Vietnam helicopter pilot stories he told to me as a child. I found an agent right away, a great agent. We got rejection after rejection and eventually parted ways and that manuscript is still unpublished. The writing life is weird!

#5. Do you have a favorite coffee or tea mug? I do. And I’ve chipped the last three on the counter. My daughter says I’m incapable of taking them out of the dishwasher without breaking them. I wish that meant I could ditch that chore!! It’s always my favorite mug I’m chipping, no one else’s. Hmmm?

What’s a sexy rancher to do when an uptight accountant falls into his lap?

Already reeling at having inherited the family farm on his father’s death, photojournalist Cruz Brockman returns home to the Oregon town of Graciella to receive another blow—accountant Miranda Jenks is there to audit the books because the IRS suspect his late father of tax fraud. To their astonishment, sparks fly between the passionate Cruz and the career-focused Miranda upon first meeting, and the heat rises with every encounter.

Threatened with losing everything his family has worked for, Cruz has no choice but to be completely open with the uptight Miranda, something that doesn’t come easily to him, just as focusing on her own needs is foreign to her. She’s buried her own desires all her life, but the longer she spends with the captivating rancher, the more she wants to dive into a passionate affair with him.

An intense, toe-curling physical connection is one thing, but exposing their hearts is another. As Miranda finishes her audit and the clock counts down to her leaving, can the reluctant rancher and the shy accountant conquer their fears and fight for their love?

Shouldn’t things seem easier between us? He’d apologized. They’d cleared the air on that whatever-it-was that had happened in the library. ‘Kiss’ was too mild a word. He’d practically blown all the fuses in her brain. He’d devoured her. Nothing felt easier. Instead the space seemed to shrink and she felt as though someone had sucked all the oxygen out of the barn. She started walking backwards toward the barn door.

“I should go.”

“I need to get—”

They spoke at the same time. He laughed and let a breath out as he faced her. “Miranda.”

“Yes,” she said, caught in his gaze.

“I’m not sorry for that kiss,” Cruz said, his face serious again as he pinned her with that look of desire. He took a step toward her. “I’m sorry for being rude, for putting you in an awkward position.” He continued walking closer. “But I’m not sorry for that kiss, for feeling what I felt. You confuse me.”

“Bossy accountant not your type?” She tried to joke, but the words came out jagged.

His strides were long. In an instant he’d caught up to her so their bodies were almost touching. “I don’t know what my type is.” His voice deepened. “I haven’t been in one place long enough or spent enough time trying to figure out if I have a type. The only thing I’ve ever been sure of is my work and this land, the farm, the people.”

He tucked a stray hair behind her ear. The intimacy startled her more than his gaze. She felt raw inside with need. She only had to stretch up a little to meet him. Her lips could be on his again. That delicious fire could consume her, which was exactly why she took a large step back and kept going.

Lucky Chance by R.C. Welch

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. RC Welch will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. What is your favorite part of this book and why?

The protagonist, Jack Weatherlow, informs his wife, Samantha, about certain unexpected intrigues of the game of golf. There are several stories involved, which compliment, but are also enhanced by my own experiences with the game. The stories are comedic interpretations of serious situations. I like those stories inside the larger plot best of all.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Samantha Weatherlow of course, the female protagonist. I think we might do anything during the day. That’s why I like her. She’s eager, energetic, outspoken, courageous, smart, good looking and she’s French.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Moby Dick by Herman Melville. The written words are beautiful, the story is incomparably classic in scope, incorporating both fantasy and reality. The stories that are told within the unfolding plot are masterful. The description of characters and settings are all compelling. Melville is a teacher and story teller, my favorite secret mentor.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

My characters are amalgams of people that I have known, me included, but they are different than anyone I have ever known, as well. How would I know anything if I hadn’t experienced something.

What made you want to become a writer?

Childhood experiences with family reunions. The adults made me tell stories. I did as I was told, and now I do as I please.

Golf, love, life—Jack Weatherlow is more than familiar with all three. Is life a series of coincidences or is it linked by a greater thread? Returning from the brink of destruction, Jack lets his participation in recovery, his work at the hotel, and his close relationship with his wife, Samantha, guide him through some of life's most important questions and lessons. What do we do when opportunity knocks at our door? Is it fate that brings us together with those we love most? What constitutes a family and what obligations do we have to those around us? Through his relationships and experiences on and off the green, Jack discovers many of life's lucky chances.

I often wondered about the finer details which shaped my mother’s journey in life. I imagine that she began her role as a parent as one person, possibly a reluctant person, but still more whole than not and rightly directed for the most part. At some point in time, I presume that she met with an irresolvable division in her conception of that original role or her identity in general. I suspect that the horrific accident that killed my dad’s parents inspired the initial separation. However, I wonder if the imports of that tragedy were simply the last drops of a sinister reagent which had long been burning away the reigns that held her in the middle of the road.

Regardless of the cause, my mother salved her injuries with an anesthetic rather than an antiseptic. She chose relief rather than cure. I don’t suppose that she ever realized there was a difference. Nevertheless, the relief became the food or fuel which energized and promoted the process of her separation. She grew ever closer and more identified with her torment, and she grew evermore distant from her peace. I watched the transformation occur across my young life, such that I found myself more often despised and attacked by the tortured and tormented monster of trauma and tragedy, and less and less nurtured or treasured by the compassionate and caring mother of my imagination.

About the Author:
Summer is in full swing - folks are hitting the golf course by day, and reflecting on life as the sunsets go later into the evening. In the spirit of golf and life, Charlotte-based Warren Publishing has released Lucky Chance, a thoughtful and moving novel by businessman, golfer and public speaker, R.C. Welch.

Lucky Chance is a 346-page soft cover book that addresses some of life’s most thought-provoking and insightful dilemmas and lessons through the lens of Jack Weatherlow. A golfer, husband, and alcoholic in recovery, Jack returns from the brink of destruction, and through his recovery, work, and relationship with his wife, Samantha, he attempts to find the answers to some of life’s most important questions. What do we do when opportunity knocks at our door? Is it fate that brings us together with those we love most? What constitutes a family and what obligations do we have to those around us? Through his relationships and experiences on and off the green, Jack discovers many of life’s lucky chances.

Inspired by his love of golf, business, and storytelling, Welch wrote Lucky Chance to give readers insight into a character he loves, and connect certain apparent similarities in life between obviously different circumstances.

“Lucky Chance is a wonderfully crafted novel, rich with narrative originality, and emotional and philosophical depth,” added Mindy Kuhn, President of Warren Publishing. “It’s a fantastic, unique read for anyone who enjoys reading about sports or love, but also for those looking to delve into the truly intricate and complicated questions of life.”

R.C. Welch holds graduate and post graduate degrees from two universities, and is honorably recognized in various circles of the business world. He is also an accomplished golfer, storyteller and public speaker. Lucky Chance is an expression of his innate and unique gifts. He currently resides in Winston Salem, NC.

Tony cleared his throat. “You said your dad was kidnapped?”

“Last night. Coach and my dad were friends. They joined the Army together.” Why was I babbling? Tony didn’t need to know my life story. “I showed up this morning because I thought he might know why these people were after my dad.”

“Did either of them tell you?”

I shook my head and looked at Tony. “The man who beat up Coach Andrews—he said he’d give me a head start before hunting me down.”

Again, Tony glanced in the mirror. “He didn’t happen to say he drives a black Lincoln, did he?”

As I spun in the seat and leaned over the headrest to see, the belt cut into my neck. Behind us, a black car crept closer with every second. Someone in the passenger seat leaned out of the window with a gun. “There’s a man with a gun following us and I’m not freaking out. At least, I don’t think I am.”

“No, you’re cool.”

With a bitter laugh, I turned back around and dropped down on the red vinyl seat. “Cool? When are you going to ask why I’m not afraid?”

Tony hit the brakes and made a turn that left me choking from the belt’s grip. “Right after you ask why I picked you up.”

Arizona Caress by Bobbi Smith

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Bobbi Smith will be awarding $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Journeying west to rescue his brother, Chance Broderick finds the frontier full of surprises. But the biggest discovery of all is discovering the boy he's hired as his tracker is in fact a beautiful young woman.

Read an Excerpt:

“Are you sure about this, Chance?” Doug asked his brother as they rode back to the Indian village.

“I’m sure. I made a promise to her grandfather to do my best for her, and I intend to do just that.”

A few villagers looked up as Chance and Doug rode back into the village and stopped in front of Rori’s lodge. Chance dismounted and strode forward to throw wide the door flap.

Rori was feeling sad and lonely. She was ready to pack up her few belongings and leave the Pima encampment, when she heard the sound of horses outside.

“Rori!” Chance called her name as he entered unannounced.

Rori never dreamed Chance would come back for her. His good-bye had been too final, too devastating. She stared at him in mute surprise, her defenses down.

Chance took one look around the lodge and knew he’d been right. She was unhappy and it was all his fault.

Rori was tired of fighting the loneliness that had haunted her since her grandfather’s death. For just that moment, she allowed herself to believe Chance had come back because he wanted her. She stared at him, her heart beating painfully. His next words to her were so callous and demanding that they jarred her from her young girl’s reverie.

“You’re coming with me,” he ordered in a tone that brooked no argument.

At his commanding attitude, her eyes narrowed in suspicion. As much as she would have loved to throw herself into his arms, she refused to give in to the desire. She knew Chance, and she didn’t trust him.

“I ain’t going anywhere with you, Broderick!”

WINNER NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCY AWARD - Best Legal Thriller

The courtroom scenes are wonderfully written...the characters are well described and the author paints a picture of each in the mind of the reader...Strong plot, strong characters and a strong writing style that I really enjoyed. This one is a definite "thumbs-up." Strongly recommend! I look forward to reading additional works by N. Lombardi, Jr. ~ Kim M Aalaie, Author's Den

One of my favorite suspense novels of the year. It will make you question the legal system. ~The Eclectic Review

The courtroom action is excellent, trimmed to the most gripping parts of the trial, with plenty of emotional impact...a fairly realistic portrayal of the way small-town US society works...a fast-moving story with plenty of dramatic moments, and a big twist in the final pages. ~Crime Review

When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down.

A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran's counselor, is caught up in the chase.

Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa's patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers gets there first, leading to Darfield's dramatic capture.

Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine. Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge?

Read an Excerpt

“Mr. Bodine, I’m Hamilton Fiske, deputy district attorney. I’ll be prosecuting this case.”

“Didn’t we meet last year at the meeting of the New Jersey Bar Association?” Bodine asked, as his daughter collected their papers and put them in their briefcase.

“Yes, I believe we did.”

“Thought so. I never forget a voice.”

That comment threw Fiske off-center for a moment. “I just wanted to, well, shake hands so to speak, before we come out fighting.”

“Is your hand out there in the air, waiting for mine? Cause if it is, you can put it back wherever you had it. I don’t shake hands these days. And while you’re at it, you can remove that smug smile off your face. I don’t have to see it, I can tell by your tone. You’ve already pissed me off, and this is just the arraignment. So I’m not exactly in a gentlemanly mood. And if you try to set up my client by having him mingle with the others, there’ll be hell to pay. Getting my drift, son?”

Fighting words for sure, but the word that provoked Fiske the most was the condescending “son,” just as Bodine had figured it would. “Is that a threat, Mr. Bodine?”

Emily tugged at her father’s arm with the covert message that he quit this repartee. He turned to leave, but not before saying, “No, Mr. Fiske, just a consequence.”

Miss Felicity's Dilemma by Eileen Dreyer

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

ALL SHE WANTS IS HER OWN HOME

Miss Felicity Chambers is the new teacher of piano and deportment at Miss Manville’s Academy for Superior Girls. There is no reason a duke should contact her. There is certainly no reason she should marry his son. But that is evidently what the duke wants. Felicity should be delighted. But the orphaned schoolteacher has long since stopped believing in fairy tales. If only the duke’s son weren’t so compelling…

ALL HE WANTS IS THIS HOME

Lord Flint Bracken knows just what is behind the duke’s command, and it isn’t an attempt to secure a happily-ever-after for his son. The proposal is one of the duke’s schemes. Flint has no choice but to cooperate, though, or he risks more than his home. He risks national security. So court a penniless schoolteacher he must. He should be furious. But Felicity Chambers isn’t at all what he expected. She might very well be what he wants…

Read an Excerpt

It was Miss Felicity Chambers’ considered opinion that more time needed to be spent cleaning beneath beds. She came to this conclusion when the urge to sneeze overtook her as she crouched under the bed of her host, her heart pounding and her eyes squeezed shut.

“You haven’t seen her?” a voice rumbled above her.

“I’ve been looking for you,” answered the sultry tones of a woman.

A very sultry woman. Felicity wished she had the knack for sounding so interesting, rather like she thought a siren might sound when calling sailors to their doom. Sadly, she merely sounded like the new teacher of piano and deportment at Miss Manville's Academy for Superior Girls she was. Well, that she had been before the surprise correspondence from the man who was standing four feet from her twitching nose. Lord Flint Bracken.

Flint, Felicity thought with a scowl. What kind of self-respecting duke named his son after quartz? Shouldn’t his name be Reginald, or Cyril? But then, from the sound of his voice, she doubted very much that he resembled a Cyril of any kind.

“It was my father’s request,” he was saying, sounding bored. “Bring the chit here and tell her of the bequest.”

Felicity almost bumped her head on the underside of the bed. Bequest? Her eyes popped open. What was he talking about?

Benevolent by Erin A. Jensen

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Erin A. Jensen will be awarding $50 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write in the fantasy genre because it’s my favorite genre to read. Personally, I’m drawn to the allure of an alternate world filled with magic and mythical creatures, and I want to transport my readers to fantastic realms full of possibilities that are beyond anything we experience in this world.

What research was required for your book?

I watched documentaries and read quite a bit on the Lost Books of the Bible, particularly the Book of Enoch and the story of the Watcher angels. I also did some research on religious beliefs about guardian angels. Aside from that, I did some research on the sub-genres of rock-and-roll for the playlist that Abigail’s best friend made for her in the story. The portions of the story in the hospital were based on my own experiences during my grandfather’s final days, and the Supernatural references came pretty easily since I was already a big fan of the show.

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

I think Abigail taught me not to judge myself based on others’ opinions. There is a lot of me in Abigail, and several of her experiences closely mirror events from my own past. Stepping back and looking at those situations from an adult perspective helped me realize how much they shaped my opinion of my own self-worth. Writing this book was a very cathartic experience for me.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I don’t really have any superstitions, but I do imagine each character I create being played by an actor in the real world. Usually when I create a new character, I’ll “cast” an actor in the role in my mind. It helps me to visualize the story and gives those characters more depth. When I describe a new character, I’m almost always looking at a picture of the actor or actress I imagine playing the part. I keep pictures of those actors on my iPad, and I’ll watch YouTube clips of their movie or television performances and interviews to keep their voices and mannerisms fresh in my mind while I write.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’m a combination of the two. I keep a rough outline with each scene I envision written on an index card. That makes it easy to rearrange the order, and add or remove scenes while I’m writing. I don’t always have a perfectly clear idea of how the story will end. Even when I do, I might sit down to write and end up with something different than what I originally intended. Sometimes you have to give yourself the leeway to surprise yourself, as well as the reader, during the telling of a story.

Look to your right — what’s sitting there?

An almost finished cup of coffee in one of my favorite mugs. My son gave it to me for Mother’s Day. It has a picture of a dragon holding an open book with a fairy perched on the top of his head. There’s also the Castiel Funko Pop figure my husband gave me for Christmas, and a copy of the original version of Benevolent with Castiel’s picture on the cover. It was the version I submitted to the Cleveland Supernatural convention’s creative competition, and this particular copy has Misha Collins’s autograph and a heart that he drew above it.

Anything new coming up from you?

I’ll be releasing Dream Fragments (Book 4 of my Dream Waters series) in the near future. I’ve also been collaborating with ROC Vox Recording and Production Studio to produce the audiobook version of Benevolent, which I’m narrating myself.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Yes. What’s the best book you’ve read this year? If you didn’t leave a review for that book, would you consider going back and doing it now? Reviews are vital to a book’s success, especially for indie authors like me.

A story about the purpose of life, the healing power of fandom, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Tormented by the in-crowd at school on a daily basis, there were two things that gave fifteen-year-old Abigail Perkins the strength to keep going—her best friend, Danny Cobb; and her favorite television show, Supernatural. But the night Danny’s mother calls to say that his battle with cancer is nearing its end, and the doctors don’t expect him to live through the night, even Supernatural can’t dull the ache in her heart.

Devastated by her impending loss and crushed that Danny’s mother won’t allow her to visit him one last time, Abigail crawls into bed and cries herself to sleep that night; and she wakes to find Supernatural’s most endearing angel standing at the foot of her bed.

Told from Abigail’s perspective as she nears the end of her long life and revisits the moments that defined it, this story was inspired by the deep connection that Supernatural fans feel with the show’s beloved characters, and the show’s miraculous ability to help its fans through troubled times.

I flashed him a sympathetic smile. “What are you thinking?”

“I have never understood why humans are so moved by music,” he muttered as his eyes searched mine.

“Music is the closest thing that we have to magic,” I confided in a reverent whisper, “because it has the power to anchor us to a moment in time.”

His half-smile conveyed a heartwarming mix of curiosity and affection. “How so?”

I felt my face flush a shade darker as I grinned at him. “When we hear a song from our past, it conjures up all the old sensations that we felt when we first heard it.”

He eyed me with a perplexed frown as he took a step toward me. “How can a combination of man-made instruments and human vocal chords wield that sort of power?”

“I can’t explain it with words,” I whispered, “It’s something that you just have to feel.”

He stood there staring at me with that puzzled expression on his face as I stepped closer and carefully inserted the earpiece in my hand into his left ear, so the music connected the two of us, just as surely as the cord connected the earbuds in our ears. “Maybe you’d understand what I mean if you danced to the music.”

“I don’t dance,” he muttered as he watched me begin to sway to the beat.

I smiled at him as I took his hands in mine and moved his arms in time with the music, like a puppeteer pulling a life-sized marionette’s strings. “Anyone can dance. You just have to let go and let the music guide your movements.”

A skeptical frown spread across his face as he watched me, but he let me direct his movements nonetheless. He was stiff and awkward at first but as the music grew louder, he seemed to find the rhythm. “These words are nonsense,” he muttered

“Shhh,” I whispered, “Don’t think. Just feel.”

He was a remarkably fast learner, but I suppose being on earth since the dawn of time had given him plenty of opportunities to watch humans dance. Once he started to feel the music, he moved with all the grace that you’d imagine an angel would.

“Hey Jude” gradually faded away until there was nothing but silence in our twin earpieces.

We stopped moving and stood there staring at each other while we waited for the next song to guide our movements.

What are you waiting for?

Everyone has endured the endless traffic light, the queue that goes nowhere, the elevator music piped through the phone line. But what of those periods in your life when everything seems on hold? When you can't do the next thing in your professional or personal life because you can't get to it?

Waiting—be it for health, a life partner, a child, a job—can be an agony. The persistently unrealized goal feels like an endless road. And hope's constant deferment can be exhausting. A firm answer against the thing you're hoping for—"no"—might be easier than this constant lack of closure. It might be easier to give it up.

But what if waiting means to be something else? Waiting doesn't have to mean idleness. Our prolonged state of need might teach us to look beyond the desired goal to something infinitely better. We find lessons on this throughout the Bible and, if we are paying attention, in our own lives.

Rather than fostering frustration, periods of waiting might have great truths to tell us. It might show us that hope is worthwhile. Waiting might even be a gift in and of itself.

Read an Excerpt

If you have asked God for something, and he has not said "yes," or "no," if you are among the loved ones enduring his seeming silence because he has asked you to wait, if you are standing on a proverbial sideline or platform somewhere, then I am asking you to shift your gaze. Don't look at the game. Don't squint at the stick. And don't think for a minute that, just because I ask you to shift your gaze, that the thing you are gazing at--the thing you want and are waiting for--is bad. It's not. But there is something to be gleaned from the sideline itself--and this is what we must attend to. You are on the outside, looking in. But look around you.
