“A desperate princess, a handsome warrior, and an ancient magick to determine their fate.”

As daughter to the High King, love doesn’t come easily to Gráinne. Having turned down hundreds of suitors, she is being forced to marry Finn, an old, ugly yet powerful general. While outside the marriage hall, Gráinne bumps into Diarmuid, Finn’s handsome foster son. From that moment, Gráinne knows if she is to have any chance at love, he is the one she must marry. She begs him to take her away from this unwanted wedding. When Diarmuid refuses, Gráinne, desperate, places a curse on him; help her or die.

Diarmuid is a warrior who only wants to serve loyally, but when the princess sets her sights on him and casts her curse, he must make the most difficult choice of his life. Does he help her, taking their chances with a vengeful Finn, or does her refuse her, leaving her to her fate, and risking his own death?

With both their lives on the line, Gráinne and Diarmuid must fight to use Ireland’s ancient magick to escape from Finn, either bringing them together in passion or in death.

A Curse of Magick is a passionate tale of love, betrayal, revenge, and redemption. A retelling of an ancient Irish myth, A Curse of Magick takes the love and romance of Romeo and Juliet, and the exhilaration of King Arthur, and mixes it together for a satisfying adventure all will love.

Gráinne stumbled up the path to the top of the cliff. The wind whipped her hair and cloak around her. The moon had disappeared behind skittering clouds. Still furious at Diarmuid, she turned south and stomped along the edge of the cliff.

“That stupid, stupid man.” With the rage that boiled inside her, alongside the dark, she could barely see where she was going. She stepped on a loose stone that rolled and tumbled down, bouncing, and crashing to the bottom of the cliff below. Gráinne struggled to stay upright but her balance failed her. Her leg slid to the right and over the edge of the cliff. She grabbed a jutting stone, near the size of the giant’s head, and held on. Her heart was pounding, and the little vision she had swam as the sharp edges of the stone cut into her hands. She scrabbled at the stone, tearing her nails until they bled. She pulled hard against the stone until the muscles in her arms trembled and her hands, too, bled. She struggled to find purchase with her feet. Her left foot pushed against the cliff edge but only managed to kick over more stones. Gasping, her breath burned in her chest and tore at her throat. She pulled her knee up as tightly to her chest as she could until her toes found a tiny solid outcropping. With a final powerful kick, she pulled herself up to safety.

Quotes

Becoming your own number one choice in life is walking the spiritual path successfully.

It is time to trim your existence from all the self-imposed drama. Your perception plays an important role in releasing yourself from all this commotion.

You are divinity in motion.

Walking this earth with a curious mind, willing to learn, to be challenged and to grow is the purpose of every soul...

Read an Excerpt:

Spirit has been teaching me about oneness. As humans, we are all one. I guess one is not the loneliest number, after all. What if I told you this extends to far greater than humanity. All sentient beings are one. All living things are one. The intersection of all three groups represents oneness. With that in mind, it becomes that much more important to be aware of your surroundings and all involved parties.

As you discover yourself, your needs, your boundaries, your strengths and your limitless ways, it becomes that much more important to be sensitive to all sentient beings and all living things on Earth. The notion of protection of all is relevant. The notion of lending a hand to elevate another is meaningful and involves your heart’s frequency. We are all interconnected. I would go as far as to say, this extends to the afterlife as well. I suspect it also extends to anything moving about in the great universe and beyond. Your soul is far from being on a solo journey while you are looking to expand, evolve, learn and experience. It’s all right to complete the soul’s long list of wishes, but it is imperative to do so while keeping the greater good of others in mind too.

I looked forward to sipping tea and exploring Mark’s ancestral roots in Ireland, but oh, what a twist of fate!

My life as owner of The Painted Lady Inn hardly prepared me for this. With my detective husband by my side, we embark on a journey filled with mayhem, murder, and mischief.

As I savor every bite of Irish stew and soak in the breathtaking scenery, little do I know that our vacation will turn into a whirlwind of sleuthing.

Who could have imagined the secrets hidden behind Mark’s family tree? And what dark secrets lurk in this picturesque village, threatening to shatter the tranquility?

The jig is up, and it’s up to us to untangle the web of intrigue.

A large delivery truck emblazoned with the word Tato and a smiling potato wearing a bowler hat careened around the curve. “Mark, watch out! He’s coming right at us.”

“What’s his problem?” Mark exclaimed, pushing in the clutch and shifting down while guiding the tiny car to the suggestion of a shoulder. The truck honked as it whizzed by them causing the small car to sway.

“Um…” Donna cleared her throat. “I think you were in his lane.”

Mark muttered something indecipherable, then closed his eyes. “You’re right. If I wasn’t so flummoxed by this joke of a car, I might have remembered they drive on the left side of the road. Add in the manual transmission, which I haven’t driven since high school. Having to use my left hand for shifting doesn’t help.”

“I know, honey.” She reached over to pat her husband’s arm, which only required moving her hand the slightest bit. “At least we’re still in the airport parking lot as opposed to an actual road.”

“Good thing.” His eyes flickered open and he inhaled audibly. “It is what it is. Let’s start by getting on the right side of the road.”

“Left side.” Donna couldn’t stop herself from commenting.

After glancing both ways, Mark steered the vehicle over to the left lane. “They could have at least put some reminder to drive on the left side.”

“They did.” She pointed to white transparent letters slightly above eye view that read: Stay Left.

“Not the easiest to read.”

“Of course not,” she readily agreed with her husband, well aware a portion of his attitude came from being tricked by the counter clerk. The rest came from being out of control. So far, this wasn’t the trip they’d planned. “How about you find a car going our way and just stay behind it? That’s what I do on long trips.”

The Sexy Seven Supernaturals by Luki Belle

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Pomotions. Luki Belle will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five Things You Might Not Know About Luki Belle

1) My fiction writing passion started because of a failed attempt to paint an imagery. A former colleague of mine commented on my paintings and said that I needed to “take the lid off myself” meaning to be more expressive and not to be shy. You see I am a self-taught artist. I realized that what my colleague was saying was for me to be more dramatic in my artistic expression because he intuitively pointed out that I had the desire to express more. However, I knew that I did not have the skills to illustrate my inner thought process, in art, because I was teaching myself and lacked the knowledge to make my paintings appear more dynamic. Shortly after that conversation with my colleague, I had a terrible nightmare which produced a recurring vision of a haunting scene. I wanted to materialize that vision into art, as a way of self-healing from that terrible experience. While doing so, I quickly concluded that my humble painting skills were limited, and I needed to express this haunting vision into words to get the therapy I was seeking. That got me started on writing out that recurring scene which I kept seeing in my mind after my nightmare. Those initial words, to find self-healing, led to a twelve-year writing project and produced my first fiction book which was recently published as my third novel (after The Sexy Seven Supernaturals).

2) I used to be very scared of the dark and of ghosts as a child. Now, I produce my best writings in a dark room with just a few candles and all my three published novels have paranormal themes.

3) English is my second language, and I am an incredibly slow reader.

4) When I write it is like spiritual meditation for me, a direct connection to Divinity and I savor each writing session because it allows me to connect with the Supreme.

5) I am not an engaging or even an interesting storyteller when I have to verbally do it impromptu, whether it be verbally telling a fictional story or retelling an experience from the past about me or about others.

Seven haunting tales of women, young female adults, and an adolescent girl whose lives change irreversibly because of entities who come into the lives of these female protagonists, mysteriously, invited by yearnings and distresses that exist in these women and girls -

1) The Photo and the Letter: Larissa, a heartbroken young woman, finds a captivating photo of an elderly friend and becomes compelled to discover more about the bitterly written letter that was addressed to the elderly woman, who had a fascinating past.

2) Strength of Feathers: Vanessa, an orphan, who struggled her entire life to survive and achieve professional success, decides one night to overcome her fear of heights and her reluctance to be spontaneous when she meets an enigmatic, wealthy woman who has ulterior motives.

3) The Aunt: Anika, a teenage girl, niece of a notable and authoritative commander of her nation’s army, finds herself in a precarious situation when at a bloody crossroads of her nation’s history, she falls for a young, ambitious, and ruthless military man from a long-rival nation, who is about to take over rulership of Anika’s nation and her uncle’s army.

4) Ravenous: Sabrina, a young adult, daughter of a coalminer, is forced to leave her hometown with her father and siblings. Her family is taken in by a kind doctor who has mixed intentions for helping the homeless father and his three children.

5) The Bride’s Matchmaker: Mylakena, a young rural woman, comes to live in a dynamic, metropolitan city with her uncle, when she falls for two handsome, rich, and athletic young city men and realizes that her innocent infatuation has severe consequences.

6) The Picture Ghost: Elsa, a young adult daughter of a farmer, starts attending college far away from her hometown. Her poor grades lead her to a professor whose art collection draws Elsa uncomfortably close to an enigmatic stranger from the past.

7) The Old Willow Tree: Helen, a highly successful businesswoman, retires in a foreign country where, while searching for a permanent home with a garden, she falls in love with a stunning willow tree on a property that she desperately wants to buy.

from The Picture Ghost

When Eugene came into his teenage years, the merchant used the handsome lad’s innocent charms to attract single, female guests at social events. The women were made to believe by Eugene that his benefactor, the rich merchant, was a lonely, generous, and warmhearted man. Thus, the adolescent enabled several affairs under such pretenses, for the merchant. The man, never having had the talent for pursuing women found in Eugene an indebted being who was willing to do anything for the person who gave the boy education and luxuries. Their relationship became so close that the merchant practically bought Eugene from his father, telling the fisherman that his son no longer wished to maintain ties with the village. To this Eugene did not raise much objection. However, he may have been coerced to break all ties with his biological father.

frm The Old Willow Tree

The house belonged to an architect who had built many of the prominent business structures in the country, including a famous public greenhouse in their city that showcased exotic flowers and endangered trees. The architect had designed his house and lived in it with his two sisters and wife. The latter died at childbirth along with her baby. Following the tragic event, the architect put his house up for sale. And then the facts became stories. Helen could tell that the friend was adding his own imagination and fabrications to what seemed to have happened next. However, one thing was clear. At a certain point in time, the architect had given up or had decided not to sell the house. The friend was certain it had something to do with the property. Prospective buyers had rumored about feeling uncomfortable on the premises and some had even heard a woman’s voice speaking to them and others had heard a baby crying.

About the Author:
Luki Belle works in the media industry. Storytelling was a fixture from childhood when she would listen to stories told by her grandparents, parents, sisters, and cousins, who would read to her from diverse cultural fiction books. Scary and ghost stories in particular, captured Luki as a child and led to her fascination with the concept of feeling haunted or being haunted by something or someone, whether desirably or whether uninvited. In the Sexy Seven Supernaturals, Luki explores the amalgamation between the psychological and the paranormal, enabled by the human mind through its power to imagine, visualize, and yearn. The female characters in this book each have strong or subtle conscious desires created or triggered by subconscious or unconscious distresses, leading each of them to unexpected fates.

It was a happy homecoming group at table that night although, inevitably, most people spoke of war.

“These are good,” Javrik acknowledged, sitting next to Sarai with his brother on his other side, both of them eating her sweet rolls. The only rule of the home seemed to be that the men must leave their boots on the porch, to save cleaning for the women. But she could see that her husband had changed into clean clothes, and washed his beard and his hair. They still curled faintly, looking like spun gold as they dried. In a crowd of men coming in, many with wives and children, he stood out.

It was pretty clear, though, that Jerisi held court.

“Sarai‘s father,” he told the assemblage, “returned to prepare stone throwers.”

There was a murmur of approval.

“You have the timber and rope to make them.” He spoke directly to her, but obviously to everyone else as well. “And the rocks. We will harvest rocks from your ground like a crop and shoot them from atop Grandfather Mountain and Little Man on anyone below.”

He rubbed his hands gleefully, provoking a laugh at the table. “That should take out a good number.”

“What else can they throw?” someone asked.

“Oh, pretty much anything. Flaming balls of pitch. Severed heads.”

The laughter this time was robust.

“UGGHHH!” Most of the women protested, but they, too, were laughing.

Jerisi, already well into his cups, raised a tankard. “Drink to their deaths, my friends!”

So, this was war. Unconsciously, Sarai leaned towards Javrik, who was less inebriated than some others—but not much.

“Ugly stuff, isn‘t it?” he commiserated. “And I‘m afraid you haven‘t seen anything yet.”

“And I thought you were the civilized ones,” she teased. “That‘s what they tell us in the mountains.”

“Oh, no.” He leaned back. “We only pretend.”

She had dressed for dinner in the bright colors the other women favored, and worn her hair as Sange suggested, intricately braided and held with rich-looking combs. Well, she had fed him, gotten him drunk, dressed like a woman looking for attention...there was only one thing left to try. If he rejected her again, she didn‘t know what she would do. A woman might have an abusive husband or a drunken one, which was bad enough. But to have one who simply didn‘t care about you was the kiss of death, since you were shackled to him for life.

“Where do we sleep tonight?” she asked, letting her leg touch his beneath the shelter of the table.

“Upstairs,” he said, not moving his leg. “Do you want me to show you?”

At last, she thought. The man was not made of stone, after all. Her fingers curled anxiously inside her palms, but the weight and warmth against her thigh was very real.

“Yes,” she murmured. “Yes, I do want that.”

Resparking Creativity by Fatemah Mirza & Sumayyah Rafiq Haider

Five things you would probably never guess about me…

First, I am learning my sixth language! In order of fluency, I know English, Urdu, Hindi, Spanish, and Malayalam, and Arabic. I just really love learning and languages are particularly fascinating to me. It goes back to my desire to open communication channels with everyone around me and wanting to understand things. I’m not very good in Arabic just yet but I’m getting there!

Second, I make most of my own dresses. I’m an avid fan of sewing and I love finding some good fabric and sowing a dress for myself. I also make dresses for my daughter. There’s a lot of inspiration available online now and I love to find new projects that way. And my friends often tell me if they’ve found some nice fabric that they think I’ll like.

Third, I am currently working on a nonprofit that will make resume services more accessible to students in the global south. I’m calling it Careertuners.ai and the goal is to combine our services with AI and share that with these students. I want to empower them and help them get good jobs, through which they can elevate their standard of living.

Four, I can do all of the above because of the support of my wonderful and caring husband, who is an amazing father and partner 🙂

And five, I moved every single year from age 6 to 14. Sometimes across the ocean! I’ve moved around after that as well but at a less frequent rate. It’s helped me understand the importance of empathy, good communications, and being a good listener. I think that’s where my desire to communicate and understand people came from. I wanted to connect with the new people I was meeting and build friendships.

Accelerate your marketing career by learning concrete strategies to reignite your creative spark and build a compelling case for your promotion to director. From creating a standout project portfolio to evaluating your skills to salary negotiation, networking, and interviewing best practices, this book equips ambitious marketing professionals with the tools necessary for long-term success.

The process of advocating for yourself is not inherently aggressive. It simply creates an equal playing field and a two-way communication channel where you and the company achieve a mutually beneficial agreement. Ultimately, there are more reasons to try to negotiate your salary than not. I want you to have the tools necessary to negotiate for the maximum raise you can possibly get in any negotiation.

Let me show you what I mean. I helped one of my clients, let’s call him John, negotiate a $6,000 addition to his annual salary. This $6,000 raise, with a 3% additional annual raise per year, had the potential to translate into almost $400,000 more over the course of a standard 35-year career! And that was a modest 3% raise. Imagine how much you can benefit by learning how to advocate for yourself more directly!

After graduating from Harvard, Artemas Salcido is determined to transform Mexico’s justice system and joins the federal police. He begins solving crimes committed by the rich and powerful and is banished to the village of Bustamante.

On a college field trip to Bustamante’s nearby caverns, the daughter of a US senator is brutally murdered. The FBI, the international media, and a Mexican hit squad tasked with making the problem go away descend on the village. When Mexico’s attorney general tells Artemas his career depends on his cooperation, Artemas realizes his life is at stake.

As other grisly murders occur, Artemas’s investigation uncovers an ancient blood cult connected to a powerful financial cabal that stretches from mediaeval Europe to Mexico's most influential politicians and businessmen. When he disputes his violent colleagues’ bogus solution to the crime, Artemas is marked for death.

The trick would be to figure out how best to use the information and stay alive in the process.

Entrepreneurship is considered one of the most ancient professions in human history. So, why then, is entrepreneurship so difficult to break into for minorities? What are the social and economical roadblocks and what can you do to tear them down and make a mark for yourself as a true corporate misfit?

As a managing partner of seven separate multi-million-dollar businesses operating in twenty-three States, I've discovered there's no single formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur - but there are certain rules, especially for minorities, that must be abided by to avoid operational blunders. Any book can tell you it all comes down to planning and having the right mindset, but these gross oversimplifications are precisely why many fail to grasp the true keys to success.

Throughout these nine chapters you'll learn all aspects of the minority entrepreneur's journey, from starting a venture to ensuring its success. You'll break down the balance between structure and flexibility necessary to grow and flourish as a minority entrepreneur. You'll decode the complexities of the rules and uncover what obstacles stand before you - and how to rise above them, steadfast and unbred.

Business plans are like road maps—it’s possible to travel without one, but that’ll only increase the odds of getting lost along the way. Owners with a business plan see growth 30% faster than those without one, and 71% of the fast-growing companies have business plans. A well-written business plan is an important tool because it gives entrepreneurs and small business owners, as well as their employees, the ability to lay out their goals and track their progress as their business grows. Business planning should be the first to-do when starting a new venture.

Business plans are also important for attracting investors so they can determine if your business is on the right path and worth putting money into. Keep in mind, investors or banks will look at your business plan to see if it's well thought out and realistic, so it's important to do your research beforehand to build a realistic path forward. A good place to start is to plan for the first five years and set business milestones to achieve.

In today’s business world, most young entrepreneurs wonder if they really need a business plan, since it requires a lot of brainstorming and a lot of work goes into it, plus there’s this common misconception that business plans are outdated. Another portion of young entrepreneurs like spontaneity and believe they’ll figure things out along the way, which most of the time results in extremely catastrophic scenarios.

When young entrepreneurs ask me whether they should draft a plan before formally executing their business, my answer is always yes. You really need a business plan. Entrepreneur Kevin J. Donaldson said that going into business without a business plan is like going on a mountain trek without a map or GPS support. You’ll eventually get lost and starve. Though it may sound tedious and time-consuming, business plans are critical to starting your business and setting yourself up for success. Dreaming up your business is an amazing thing, but usually, in an entrepreneur's dream, they don’t anticipate the cash flow needs of actually growing their business.

When you start out, it may be just you and family or friends, but what about when you grow and need to hire employees? What about additional inventory needs? Maybe you didn't know about a competitor down the street and wonder why your business isn’t growing. Things like these are planned out in advance with a well-thought-out business plan. If you stay on track with growth, you'll know the capital needs it’ll take and can plan that out in advance.

The Order of the Banshee by Robyn Singer

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Robyn Singer will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banners to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I’ve always loved both science fiction and romance, for different reasons. Science fiction allows for stories to discuss relevant, important themes with a degree of separation from our own world, allowing readers/audiences to take in and potentially learn from the story’s messages, without being bogged down in all-too-real misery, and often with a layer of power fantasy and wish fulfillment mixed in. With romance, I’m a sucker for two things: drama and happy endings. Sometimes these things go together, sometimes they don’t, but few moments in stories have the power of a well-written couple finally getting together, or tragically being split apart. When I conceived The Sunrisers, the predecessor to The Order of the Banshee, the basic pitch was, “Killing Eve in Space”, because I realized there weren’t many, if any, high-stakes, action-packed, lesbian romances in the sci-fi genre.

What research is required?

No idea is wholly original. When designing a fantastical/paranormal setting, particularly the cultures within that setting, intentionally or not, a writer’s ideas for that setting will come from what they know. Studying real cultures and real technology not only allows a writer to create a more diverse, fleshed-out setting but also allows the setting to connect more with the reader/audience because it’s based on reality.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

One thing I’ve learned from my heroine, Yael Pavnick, is that failing to achieve your dreams doesn’t make you a failure. As explored in The Sunrisers, Yael was a child prodigy who dreamed of joining the eponymous intergalactic peacekeeping organization. Despite being mentally and physically far more capable than her peers, she was denied her dream, as her Autism and ADHD had her deemed, “Mentally Unfit”. While she initially thought this meant her life was over, she found a new purpose, a new way to use the skills she’d honed and a new family, and by the time of The Order of the Banshee, she’s become one of the richest and most infamous thieves in the universe.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

To my embarrassment, yes ha ha. When I’m conceiving or visualizing a scene in my head, I will “act it out” with my hands and fingers. This includes when I’m in public, and I don’t always realize I’m doing it until I get a stare.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’m a plantser. I have an outline for my stories, but only the events at the beginning and the ending are completely set in stone. I allow the characters to guide me through my general idea for the middle, based on what I think they’d do.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

No one. As I write this, I’m alone, with two of my roommates asleep, and one of my roommates at work. I’m off from my job as a teacher today.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I have an ongoing comic book series from Band of Bards, which has, to date, released three issues. We’ve been on hiatus for some time now, but we’re going to be working to finish the first arc very soon!

Do you have a question for our readers?

Do you prefer fantastical happy endings, or endings where the harsh realities of life crash down on the protagonists?

It’s been five years since Yael and Molina reunited. Yael is one of the richest and most infamous thieves in the universe and a member of the Order of the Banshee. She is rising through the ranks of the elite organization with her wife and her ride-or-die best friends, Aarif and P’Ken, at her side, and she’s even running her own school for thieves. Molina, former captain in the universe’s premiere peacekeeping organization, the Sunrisers, is happily married to Yael and tells herself that’s enough.

Their seemingly perfect lives are interrupted when they receive news of the death of Molina’s father. When Molina returns home for his funeral, she reunites with her former friend and now enemy: Kaybell, the emperor of the Cykebian Empire. Kaybell, eager to mend the relationship, informs Molina that her father was murdered and offers to help Molina find those responsible and bring them to justice.

While Molina and Kaybell hunt the people responsible for her father’s death, Yael is hunted by an invincible assassin – one with a terrible secret. These two seemingly unrelated events are more connected than Yael or Molina could possibly imagine.

“Yael, you must get up and shower,” P’Ken declared, standing right over me, both hands on her stick.

“Seriously, you’re starting to stink pretty bad,” Aarif followed, standing right next to her.

“Waaaaaaaah!” I cried, curled up in a ball in my bed. “I miss my Moli!”

The past few days had been absolutely miserable. For security reasons, I couldn’t contact Molina while she was on Cykeb, and living in the school without her around was too weird. As much as I’d been staying in bed, I couldn’t even sleep in such a big one without her. My only comforts had come from my endless supply of beer, instant ramen, and gummies, the bottles, cups, and bags they’d come in all over my bed and floor.

“She’ll be back soon. And then you can make up for lost time.”

“For now, however, you promised Shun you’d spar with her today, and a thief of your distinction shouldn’t be gaining a reputation as a lying thief.”

“Come on, let’s get ready for the day.”

I groaned for an extended period, rubbing my temples. “You’re not my parents.”

“Obviously not,” P’Ken rolled her eyes. “My child will never be allowed to make their room a pigsty.”

Aarif plopped down next to me, shaking the mattress. “We may not be your parents, but we are your family. We want to help you.”

I shook my head. “You can’t.”

Outsider by Monica Buchanon

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Monica Buchanan will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Monica Buchanan grew up in Jamaica. She revisits her lived experiences of abuse and neglect in early childhood and her younger adult years. Buchanan takes the reader on a palatable path that allows for reflection on one's own life. She writes about her survival journey, while looking through descriptive lens, she carefully details how exposure to early childhood abuse and neglect within her family helped form patterns, influenced choices, and shaped decisions in her adulthood.

By chronicling familial stories, the roles of parents, siblings, and community, she employs a story-telling and meaning-making approach, that is both painful and entertaining. Even though as a young child I was told I was the problem, I knew intuitively that I did not cause all my problems. I now know that what happened to me within the context of familial (and other) relationships had a name--emotional abuse and neglect.

Growing up I wished there were more people and resources that could help me make sense of my life as I struggled with low self-esteem, insecurities, felt lost, craved attention, and an overall sense of not belonging--I felt like an outsider and desperately wanted to be on the inside.

Buchanan reaffirms that: childhood experiences of abuse and neglect does not mean one has a commutable life sentence of pain and suffering. It does not matter where you are on your healing journey, you can set that stuff aside and reclaim your life. This book is for anyone who grew up in a toxic, abusive, and unhealthy home environment where they felt like they did not belong within the family unit. It is also a book about making changes, forgiveness, and letting go.

My Mother Was Not Affectionate with Me

As a young child, I do not remember craving attention from my mother; somehow it is as if I knew intuitively not to expect anything. The dynamics between us were different and strange—a kind of old understanding which did not require words. I do not believe my mother hated me as a child, and I do not remember her as particularly unkind or mean towards me, but I do not believe she allowed herself to show love either. I believe that I represented an experience she wishes she never had. There was no need to say in words what we both knew.

Later in life, I began to make some sense of the feelings I had for my mother during my early childhood. It is as if I was the guardian of a Pandora’s box that I held carefully but dare not open. We both knew there was a key to this secret box hidden in plain sight, but neither of us reached for it. My mother would look at me in a strange way, and I would know to keep my distance. When I was little, sometimes I would catch her looking at me as if she wanted to say something or reach out and touch me, but she never did. There was extraordinarily little emotional connection between me and my mother. I did not know what I should have or what I was missing, but something felt wrong. I was quiet and stayed out of everyone’s way.

High Point by Susan Zel Bella

This post is part of a virtual book tour organied by Goddess Fish Promotions. Susan Zoe Bella will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write in romance of contemporary, fantasy, suspense, and paranormal.

What research or world-building for fantasy/paranormal/Sci-fi) is required?

I don’t research fantasy or paranormal world-building. I create my own from my imagination.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Guard your heart.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I do. I don’t kill of characters that are inspired by real people. My OCD makes numbers a challenge. For example, if my word count ends on a number I don’t like, I have to delete or add until I reach a number I’m okay with. Quirk, I live with my characters.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Both. It just depends on the book. Some just come to me and I start writing then just follow the muse, those are the most enjoyable. Others I write out a plot and it rarely goes the way I wrote it so I end up writing my the seat of my pants anyway. LOL.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

My fiancé in his huge brown leather recliner as he shops online. I can see his computer perfectly.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Yes! Awestruck is a fantasy about a new type of genie. Hopefully, my Shook Coda series that I’ve started. And I have several books on my planned page.

Do you have a question for our readers?

What is your favorite genre? Do you love or hate pregnancy tropes?

It’s only rock and roll but I hate it. Groupies, parties, a cheating ex, and a dark night spawned a wake-up call. I’d shifted my focus to work and avoiding social media. Singing lead for a famous band had become nothing more than a steppingstone to my true dream of racing Pro Motocross. I hadn’t dated in years. Then ‘she’ showed up and everything in me longed to be with her. I was stoked she’d agreed to join me at High Point Raceway for the weekend, even if it meant putting up with Mack. Better still, Mia wasn’t a groupie, not even close. She wasn’t even a fan of our music. If love at first sight had a name, it would be Mia Fringe and I had to make her mine. ~ Jett

I’d seen him in passing over the years. He was the neighbor of my best friend. But we’d never officially been introduced until the night Mackie badgered me into meeting him after attending his band’s concert. I tried not to look awestruck, stunned that someone this gorgeous had been within my scope for years but had not caught my attention. He had success written all over him. Girls like me didn’t end up with guys like him. Recently unemployed, still living on the family farm, and recovering from a nervous breakdown, I was a mess. But Jett saw something in me that nobody else ever had…worth. ~ Mia

Action, drama, and chaos kick off right from the start at High Point Raceway when Mackie has second thoughts about playing matchmaker between Mia and Jett. However, when the week of bliss comes to an end, Mia is heartbroken and confused as to why Jett doesn’t keep his promise. She accepts a job as a reporter three thousand miles away to escape the pain. Ten years later, Mia and Jett cross paths in the most startling way. She’s about to discover the truth of what really happened so long ago. Will she be able to trust Jett again when he pleads for a second chance? Can love and forgiveness conquer a decade of hurt? It all goes down in the dirt during the last race of the season.

“Cozy,” I said. “Love the sound of rain. Not fond of storms so much, though.”

“I’ll protect you,” he proudly declared.

I giggled. “Like you did in the cave? Will you chase them away with a tiny twig?”

He tackled me to a nearby sofa and tickled me into fits of laughter. His reflexes were incredibly fast. I giggled and coiled against him and pretended I wanted him to stop.

Then he thoroughly kissed me, sweeping his tongue through my mouth. He tasted fresh as always and his kiss was laden with hot desire. I sighed and relaxed against him, relishing his touch, his scent, the sound of his breathing. Nothing else mattered right then except being with him.

His lips eased their way to my neck, leaving a trail of warmth in their wake as they drifted lower—and lower still. I wound my fingers into his soft, thick hair and took hold.

He slid the zipper of my top halfway down with one hand while keeping the fingers of his other laced with mine above my head. He caressed my midriff then inched higher. I curled around him, wanting him, basking in the closeness. He lifted his head, unlocked our fingers, and let his hand glide down the underside of my extended arm while simply gazing at me.

I wanted him so much it scared me.

“I’m falling for you, darlin,” he whispered soft and low. Emotion drenched his voice.

I stared up into his ‘make love to me’ eyes. And in that moment, I knew the truth must be told.

Tears stung my eyes. “We should have that talk now.”

“Now? I want you, baby. I’m on fire here. Can we do it later? Whatever is going on won’t change how I feel about you.”

Wow. He’d made up his mind. Fringe had won him over. There we lay, alone and tangled around each other. He was mine for the taking. Strikingly handsome Jett Castle, dream guy, falling for me.

I wrestled with my conscience. He was ready to take our relationship to the next level. Everything I wanted was right within my grasp.

“It’s the leather,” I refuted. “Your judgment is clouded.”

He smiled with a light scoff. “No, well maybe, but we came close earlier. Here we are back in each other’s arms fighting our feelings for one another again.” He lowered his head and resumed kissing a delectable trail down my neck.

“You’re right,” I said on an airy breath and wrapped myself around him as he lowered his hard body against my soft curves.

“Mia…” he purred out my name in that velvety smooth tone.

No, no, no. Not her. My thoughts scrambled. But it was too late. He was falling for Mia—honest, loyal, kindhearted Mia. He deserved to know who he was dealing with. I’d never forgive myself if I lost him by deception.

I flattened my palms against his chest and gently pushed him back. “We can’t. Not yet. I’m sorry.”

He stared at me with brows knitted in utter disappointment. “Having second thoughts?”

“Absolutely not. I want you more than anything.”

“But?” He tilted his head. “There is a but…right?”

“Kind of. I don’t want you to get blindsided. I don’t know where to begin.”

He sighed and dropped his head on my chest. “Let me guess, Kat?”

“You felt a wall between us. As much as I want this with you right now, I can’t until—” I stopped short when a sudden roar came from outside. “Tornado!” I’d recognize that sound anywhere, anytime.

His head jerked up. Our eyes met as we froze and listened.
