Hello, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Parker Fairchild, and I’m thrilled that my first novel, a holiday romantic comedy, entitled: “Christmas Cookies on a Cruise Ship,” has been published.

1.) The first nine years of my life were different from that of my peers because I had chronic, severe asthma. Around nine, I was able to get off some of my daily medications, which I owe in part to all the swimming I did, which my doctor and parents thought had strengthened my lungs. Even though I still keep an inhaler at hand, I’m very fortunate that I’m much better now.

2.) I graduated with honors from the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Virginia. I kid you not—their mascot is a spider, and at the time, I happened to be terrified of spiders. In fact, I refused to date one nice guy who kept a pet tarantula in his dorm room.

It wasn’t until I met my husband, Jason, on a Hawaiian cruise, that I overcame my arachnophobia. He lived in Phoenix, Arizona—in my mind, the spider capital of the world—and I was living in Virginia. A few visits and hikes later, and I got over my fear of my eight leg nemesis.

3.) So, now I’m a beach loving East Coast Virginia girl living in the Sonoran Desert here in the Wild West. Phoenix is beautiful, and I love my new home. However, I do miss enjoying the four seasons that Virginia offers. But whenever I long to see fall foliage or snow, all I need to do is make about a two hour drive north to Flagstaff to experience a whole new weather environment.

4.) I’m a true foodie who loves to cook, bake, and EAT! Well… I’ve been known on a few—and I do mean only a few—occasions to sneak back into the kitchen for another little taste of something yummy from dinner!

5.) I also love to travel and cruise; I love seeing and learning about the people and cultures in other states and countries around the globe. I’m very blessed; I have my parents to thank for instilling in me the value of exploration. Thank you, too, Mom and Dad for the six driving trips that we’ve taken across country, the multiple cruises, and Mom, for happening to find the perfect honeymoon for my hubby and me. (We began with four days in Rome followed by a 14 day Transatlantic cruise making stops in Cartagena, Spain; Málaga, Spain; and Madeira, Portugal before disembarking in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.)

On a Caribbean cruise, a platter full of cookies, and a shot of Christmas magic yields a perfect pairing.

Chemist and budding romance writer Olivia Chasen is on a cruise to avoid spending Christmas with her beautiful twin sister and new fiancé—Olivia’s ex. Now, thanks to her lonely, intoxicated ramblings on Santa’s lap, her fellow passengers think she’s in love with a fictional character.

Former Navy SEAL Commander Jace Morse has dealt with plenty of unusual situations in his career, but he’s never had the honor, the pleasure, or the privilege of being a beautiful and intelligent woman’s fantasy hero come to life. While he hasn’t officially met the sexy chemist, he’s sure eager to explore the chemistry that’s sizzling between them.

Bringing the charming SEAL together with the skeptical Olivia is going to take more than just Christmas cookies and a little help from Mrs. Claus; it’s gonna take a heaping dose of Christmas magic.

“What is it, sweetheart?” His eyes burned with love and desire, and she wanted to cry and dance at the same time.

Instead, she did the most un-Olivia thing—she grabbed his head and yanked his mouth down onto hers!

Cheers and catcalls erupted from the small assembly, and she distantly heard people chanting her name. Somewhere, she thought she heard someone shout, You Go, Girl, but she wasn’t sure. She was only into kissing Jace!

“Callie?” Levon tilted his head and half-smiled. “What is it about you that makes me want to forget this life and just be with you?”

“My animal magnetism?”

“Probably,” he murmured. “What did I do that made you hate me?”

“I don’t hate you.” She could be evasive when she wanted to—like right now.

He nodded. “Salina?”

She tensed and pressed her lips together. Salina had a lot to do with why she couldn’t be alone with him. “She’s part of it.”

“Cards on the table,” Levon said. “I never slept with her. Never wanted to. That night in Dallas, she followed me to my room. Said she wanted to meet Haven and I believed her. All she wanted was to bed one of us. Didn’t matter which.”

She’d heard this before.

“She told everyone we slept together because it gave her credibility,” he said. “But we didn’t. She saw your photo in my guitar case and knew there was no chance. She told me to pay her a grand and she’d forget ever being in my room. When I said no, she told everyone we slept together.”

Callie knew most of those details, too—all except the thing about the photo. “I saw you kiss her.” The memory had been imprinted on her mind and tore at her heart.

“You saw a misunderstanding and a woman who wanted to hurt you. She did that just to piss you off and it worked.” Levon held both of her hands. “I don’t know what you’re not telling me, but those are my truths. I love you, Callie Mae King. Have since we met.”

Civilization's End from The Song of the King's Heart Trilogy by Nicole Sallak Anderson

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. A randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour will receive a $50 Amazon/BN GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?

My little sister. I was quite a bossy big sister who liked to have her way. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for her to grow up with little miss bossy-pants.

If you could keep a mythical/paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

I’d like to have a raven who can fly around and come back to tell me what’s going on elsewhere.

How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

There aren’t a lot of novels set in the ancient world. That keeps it fresh for me and my readers.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?

The best is write every day. The other is to hire someone to edit your novel before you pitch to agents and publishers. Not sure anyone has given me any bad advice.

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

No, this is a story based on a historical figure named Ankhmakis, believed to be the last native pharaoh, though he only ruled the Upper Kingdom, not Egypt in her entirety.

Driven apart by hatred, greed, and tragedy, the golden pair Prince Ankhmakis and the Priestess Natasa are now forced to face the darkness of their fates alone.

After a brutal betrayal from within Ankhmakis’s own family, the distraught prince seizes the throne and is crowned Pharaoh Ankhwehenfer, while Natasa is forced to flee across the sea to a new land, with a new magic. Broken and truly alone for the first time since their bonding, their grief threatens to swallow them whole.

A stalemate is proposed, and as Egypt becomes two nations as in the days of old, a prosperous peace falls over the south. The prophecy has been shattered by the Golden Child's death, yet the royals and their subjects find a way to survive and create an Upper Egypt greater than Ptolemy's northern rule. Alliances with Nubia and Kush bring the promise of hope on the horizon. The next generation comes of age, and the old one passes on their knowledge so that the sins of the past won’t be repeated in their future.

But evil lurks still. There are those both within the Pharaoh’s court and without that would do anything to see the king fall. Ankhwenefer must confront the pain of the past in order to preserve the future for his sons, or his civilization will end.

Read an Excerpt

The crowd cheered. Their screams were like the howls of furious wildcats. Their nationalism was at its peak, and all he needed to do was stoke it to earn their fealty. He turned to the high priest, who held the crown over his head. The white columns of the temple soared above them, and Ankhwenefer gazed at the hieroglyph-covered walls. In spite of the war, the temple was in pristine condition. All around him were golden statues of gods and goddesses. Animals and other brightly painted forms graced the walls. His flag bearing the phoenix flew high in the wind. Everyone in the room dropped to their knees as their king approached Setep.

“By the power invested in me,” the priest called out, “on this day, the fourth month of Perit, the eleventh day, in the third year of your holy reign, I re-crown you Lord and Pharaoh Ankhwenefer, the Good Being of Isis, Golden Eagle King, protector of our lands and Horus himself. May Amon-Re protect you and our people as we rebuild our nation. Egypt shall reign in glory until the end of time.”

Setep placed the heavy crown on Ankhwenefer’s head. A second priest handed him the hook and flail. He gripped them tightly as he crossed his chest with his arms and, turning to the crowd once more, gazed down upon them.

“My people,” he called, “I pledge myself to you.”

The sun poured in from the windows and shone upon Pharaoh’s face, and the people rose from the floor and clapped. To those in the room, their new king looked like the statues of Horus himself. Ankhwenefer was master of his domain—young, strong, intelligent, and wise. He’d fought hard for many years and won. The priestesses sang as he walked past and out to the courtyard where the commoners flooded the area, crying and tossing palm branches and lotus flowers at his feet. His entourage followed behind him, leading a procession of dancing, music, and singing, toward the palace where a feast awaited them. Tomorrow, the next phase of his reign would begin—creating peace with the Lower Kingdom, rebuilding the cities destroyed by the war, and most importantly, establishing a court in Thebes, with his sons, and Natasa, at his side.

The Cairns of Sainctuarie by Hawk MacKinney

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Hawk MacKinney will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The Cairns of Sainctuarie
Volume I - The Bleikovat Event
Volume II – The Missing Planets
Volume III – Inanna Phantom

From a rocky outcrop a battle-widowed Etkaa, gazed down at the death and upheaval. Rancid green Murian blood stanched the dusklit breezes from the haze-dimmed river marshlands. Nothing has been spared by the Green Dragon forces of Bleikovia. In skirmishes along the Feldon River, Etkaaâ's mate is fatally wounded with deadly selvon poison. Through a gruesome mountain trek of icy blizzards, they elude the Green Dragon. The battered starving Feldovats reach the coast at Eedov City only to be confronted by their implacable enemy determined to destroy the remaining Klarvkon rabble. Taking passage on crowded Maalon freighters, the refugees escape toward a new life among their Maalon hosts. Enraged Bleikovats move against the Klarvkons, bringing indiscriminate bloodshed. War once again surfaces, as it did in the muddy filth along the Feldon River of Malfesov, and becomes a different kind of war.

Generations after the great Murian upheaval of the Malfesian War against the Bleikovats, the Accords between planets Terato and Myr are signed.

Provisional Outpost Terato is under construction near a farm where Teratoan orphan Eklam a'Qoc lives with his uncle and cousin. Inquisitive strong-minded Eklam, Ek to everyone in the village, is captivated by the off-worlders technology, and becomes an apprentice to the Outpost Terato's Murian commander, Grand Duke Korvo. Uncle a'Qoc disapproves; wants nothing to do with these outlanders, wants their shimmering doorway portals-of-travel banned from Terato. As Outpost Terato becomes operational it seems to become a harbinger stirring ageless secrets of The Old Ones and their frightful weapons, of ancient Teratoan ruins, mysterious glowing lights, unexplained killings, a sacred book in a language no Teratoan can read, a moon that doesn't behave like a moon in its wobbly orbit.

From cosmic reaches beyond space and time the ominous secrets of Terato's ancient ruins become more threatening. Ek and Korvo realize both their worlds face extinction with any hope buried somewhere in unknown galaxies far beyond a pastoral Terato or the sophisticated star-empire of the Murians; of missing planets in a star system with its single star in a galaxy far-removed unknown to Terato or Myr. They travel across the universe to a place long forgotten to fight this unknown foe with weapons only dreamed of. Together they face the beast that wishes to consume the entire universe.

The threat of rift invasions seems long passed. Plentiful harvests abound. The Murian first-contact Terato Outpost has grown into the sprawling Terato-Murian Terminus Terato with a hub of relay portals reaching across the vast uncharted galactic expanses and connecting with its eon-extinct Lantaraan prehistory. An exploratory Terato-Murian Jupiterr outpost is established on the gas giant seventh planet, and its quantum and gravitational energies are used to power outpost portals for an archeological survey of the fourth planet, Eorthe. The Lantaraan database aboard Terato’s ancient Downday moon shows that one or more planets of the Solaris planets have apparently been lost. Expanded archeological records on other Lantaraan orbital bodies in the Solaris system show the fourth planet from the star—Eorthe—to be a sterile wasteland. Except it is not. Eorthe’s civilization is not to the level of the Murian Empire, but it is far advanced to those of a pastoral Terato. Terato and Eorthe form the confederated United Terran League under the nominal figurehead leader of League High Judikarr Eklam a’Qoc. Jupiterr outpost expands into a major League stronghold, Jupiterr Base, when civil unrest erupts in the League, the unexpected return of rift intrusions threatens, and the Murian Emperor Klarvko Celo is assassinated. As they prepare for confrontations with an unknown ancient enemy, the internal tensions on Myr and Eorthe push Murians and Teratoans to dangerous discords.

Read an Excerpt from BOOK THREE: INANNA PHANTOM

Eklam managed a translink to Zürich for a meet with David. As he stepped out of his outlink portal in Zürich, his arrival came with a meson core impact near the terminal’s arched glass main entrance.

A haggard armed uniform with a slightly askew field helmet hurried toward him. With a heavy Dutch accent said, “I would not remain in this area of the terminal. It is not safe. Are you the Teratoan Eklam a’Qoc on a scheduled inlink from Jupiterr Base?”

“I am.” It had been some time since anyone had addressed him with a greeting of his Terato homeworld.

The escort made sure his weapon was snugged secure in its shoulder holster for ready access, “The embassy’s portals are nonfunctional. I have orders to escort you to the Teratoan Embassy.” He handed Eklam a compact field terminal, “You have an urgent comlink from Canadian officer David Martin.” The anxious escort cradled a solid grip around his weapon, “It is best we do not linger in the terminal.”

Eklam stepped to one side of the milling crowd of passengers fleeing the terminal area. The tension in the escort’s voice tainted the air in the terminal. Eklam entered his priority code. David’s message opened.

“… link coordinates for eastern Canada are down… arrival time into Zürich uncertain… will keep you posted whenever the net is available… ”

The escort urged Eklam, “There is a lull—it is best we move toward the embassy while we can. Looters were smashing windows, grabbing anything they could. What few polizei were around just watched. Brussels and Cape Town can offer no assistance. Your small personal items and your consular pouches inlinked yesterday to the embassy.”

As they ducked and dodged from building and rubble-shelters, Eklam got the sensation of the air around them becoming heavier. He glanced at the faces in the crowds, here and there small huddles, the solitary figure caught somewhere between survival and panic in the tattered unreal haze. Before he outlinked to Zürich Eklam had received Jupiterr Base updates on sporadic hit-and-run incidents in the larger metropolitan centers, but he hadn’t expected to outlink into the middle of a benumbed multitude that was one step away from anarchy. Half of the servmo med-units serving the wounded were damaged, smoking wreckage and unresponsive. Across the plaza, confused figures stumbled aimlessly through the rubble, freezing motionless at the sound of an incoming core. In office windows overlooking the plaza others stood watching, knowing there was danger; not knowing what to do. Eklam had endeavored to preserve the position of the League High Judikarr above regional politics, but he was witnessing the fabric of government shred to pieces.

Sometimes coming home opens the door to discovering something new.

After Coach Diaz’s funeral, Alex Burke realized there was nothing left for him in Boston, especially after he found out his girlfriend had moved on. Moving back to Colorado, and bonding with his college friends, is what Alex needed to get his life back in order.

Catherine Anderson grew up in the shadow of Coach Diaz’s daughter. The best friend that was always overlooked, Catherine had reservations about the men who had been Coach’s Fabulous Five, especially Alex Burke who always had eyes for Rachel, and didn’t even know Catherine existed.

Coming together to mutually help Rachel through hard times, Catherine and Alex realize they’d had eyes for one another back when. Perhaps now that Alex was home, it would be a good time to explore an adult relationship. But when news out of Boston rocks his world, it just might be more than Catherine can handle.

“I do like you,” she said and Alex lifted a brow, as if he’d forgotten the last thing he said. “I’ve never been very nice to you though.”

Alex picked up his napkin and wiped his mouth. “That’s a lot to take in.”

Now her hands shook, so she capped the water and sat it on the ground. “I was never nice to any of you. You buzzed around Rachel and her family like a swarm of bees. I get it,” she said holding her hand up to ward off any comments. “Mr. Diaz set it up that way. Having you all around kept you mostly out of trouble. But it distracted her, and that took her mind off of being my friend. It’s petty, stupid, and small of me. But, hey, I was a teenage girl.”

Alex pulled his sunglasses from his face and hooked them on the front of his shirt. “And now? All these years later, we’re swarming again?”

“Yes,” she said breathlessly. “But I’m not sixteen anymore.”

Resting his hand on the ground, he eased toward her. “So you don’t hate me?”

Catherine swallowed hard. “I don’t think I do.”

“You’re not mad about what happened the other night?”

“Mad, no. Conflicted, yes.”

He smiled again as he inched closer to her. “You’re more comfortable hating me.”

“I never actually hated you.”

“You didn’t?”

“You didn’t see me, that’s all.”

Humor flashed in his eyes. “Oh, hell, you have no idea, do you?”

Catherine eased back. “What does that mean?”

“It means let’s discuss that over dinner. No backing out, okay?”

A fast-paced examination of loss, survival, and ultimately acceptance of those things we do not understand but must contend with as if our lives depend upon it.

From deep in the rural Tennessee woods, two brothers flee their murderous father only to find that a violent, supernatural force has followed their escape and will haunt their family for multiple generations.

All Is Set Anew is the story of abandonment and its subsequent revenge, set against a backdrop of characters imprisoned by poverty and self-doubt and their struggle to outrun the evil and illness that relentlessly pursues them.

That afternoon Mary found Edgar at the hog pens and she told him that she wanted to speak with him after supper. She spent the rest of the day packing suitcases for her husband and tidying things around the house. LoLo moved about the rooms silently and Mary worried that her decision was poorly chosen each time the woman’s eyes met hers. It was not a critical exchange of glance, but the way that LoLo diverted her eyes too quickly gave Mary a sinking sensation that made her want to ask her what she would do if the decision was hers. Mary’s upbringing had been as pragmatic as it was cultured, so she looked to facts when challenged. They had let a man like Hicks onto the place. Logic told her that he had raped Katherine, although she could not prove it. Her daughter Renee had left with him, although she could not prove that either. Katherine was alive, and while traumatized, Mary believed that she could guide her back to health. If it got out that Katherine had been raped by a man that Renee had run off with, the impact to the family and its reputation would be devastating. And when she imagined her husband’s reaction to any of this, she felt as helpless as someone looking out over an arid field, begging the merciless, baking sky for relief. Katherine will recover, she told herself. She has enough of me in her that she’ll find her way through.

One year later…

Dante pulled into the Brass Pole parking lot for his nightly shift. For the last year, he’d worked his ass off to prove to the owner, Bruce, that he could do more than look menacing at the door. He didn’t mind being a bouncer, but he’d rather work steadily with the books. Bruce allowed him to fix the mistakes in the books twice a week, but Dante preferred his time in the office, rather than at the door. The impulse to steal money never quite left him, but there wasn’t the ready cash like at his family’s clubs. Besides, he needed the job and responsibility.

He left his clunker of a car and walked into the club. Bruce stood behind the bar, rather than in his usual spot with the bouncers.

“Bruce.” Dante clocked in. “Where’s Mick? Out again?” The regular bartender wasn’t always reliable unless he was behind the bar.

“He quit. Met a girl in Sutton and left. Something about the great peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,” Bruce said. “I have no idea what the hell that means, but it’s got to be code for something. That man always talks in code about sex.” He rinsed glasses, then left them on the towel.

“Could be.” He’d never heard of sex referred to as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but whatever. “Do you have someone lined up as a replacement?”

“Not yet. I’ve got some guys coming in for interviews tomorrow.” Bruce wiped a tall-boy glass. “I’d have you fill in, but I’m sending you upstairs.”

“You are?” He’d graduated to doing the books those two nights, but hadn’t tended bar in six months.

“The books are fine and can wait another night. I’ll be down here at the bar because you’re not supposed to be this close to booze. No, I’m going to have you serve upstairs. Nothing stronger than soft drinks, so it’s not hard. Besides, I trust you up there. Everyone wants to go up there to watch the action, and I know you’ll actually do the job,” Bruce said.

“Oh, you know it?” He’d do exactly what he was told to do because he needed to prove to himself and everyone else that he could handle the job.

“You’ll give me lip, but you’ll do the job.”

The Majewski Curse by Lisa Dianne McInnes

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lisa Dianne McInnes will be awarding a $15 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

In her debut novel, Lisa Dianne McInnes urges us to explore the meaning of loss, the evil side of human nature, and the infinite power of love and rising above it all.

Between the years 2012 and 2017, like a pile of dominos, Lisa Dianne McInnes watched her life collapse as one traumatic tragedy after another took away her loved ones, leaving her to learn just how quickly life can fall apart.

An extraordinary memoir full of depth, compassion, and unimaginable strength, The Majewski Curse is the harrowing true story of the separate yet intertwined tragedies of Brandon, Devon, and Derek Majewski's deaths and the multiple conspiracies surrounding their family's search for truth.

Read an Exclusive Excerpt

The triggers of memories and reminders were everywhere. This quaint little bungalow that started as a bustling home full of joy now seemed quiet and eerie. At night, the front door would be a reminder of the flashing police lights outside, and when the kitchen phone lit up and rang, it would remind me of Richard’s repeated phone calls, not to mention that walking downstairs to say goodnight to Christopher would cause my chest to pound because I couldn’t help but look inside Devon’s room and visualize his body lying there.

I would silently pray that we would start over again somewhere new, a place where we didn’t see Brandon and Devon’s faces around every corner and a place where no one knew our sad story or our names. The peaceful little town of Innisfil did not feel like home anymore.

Sometimes, I would stand in Devon’s room after he died or sit on his bed, willing him to show himself to me. The spiritual side of me wanted to know if there were such things as ghosts and if Devon could, he would appear. After all, he had died right there in his room.

Derek had raised both Devon and Brandon as non-believers. Devon always spoke of his mother being a non-believer, and Derek had been raised Catholic, but he decided to become a non-believer after experiencing several tragedies throughout his life. He no longer believed in God and would often say that He was cruel if He did exist. Therefore, I always told the boys to think for themselves and not let their parents’ ideas or opinions influence their decision to be spiritual. I explained that personal experiences and upbringing shaped their parents’ beliefs. Therefore, they needed to search inside themselves for what they believed in and which views gave them peace.

Movies and literature always suggest that when someone passes away, the house they died in becomes haunted. In my heart, I wanted so much for that to be true. The idea of a ghost is not scary if that ghost belongs to someone you love.

I would spend hours just thinking about Devon, anxiously looking for any clue of his presence. One late night, while standing in the kitchen by the window that faced the backyard, I felt a cold gust of wind come from behind me. In that instant, I knew something felt different. The breeze came out of nowhere. There were no vents nearby, but the cold air kept coming, breathing down my neck. At the same time, I felt warm and comforted. Hot tears flowing like lava down my face and in my heart, I hoped it was Devon or Brandon, or perhaps both. I had never felt anything like it before and never felt it again since, but that little sign was what I needed.

It was at this point I began to reflect on Deepak Chopra’s Life after Death. When I had first read it, I found it interesting on many levels, but the theories never resonated with me until now. Chopra says there is abundant evidence of “the world beyond” and that death brings us through a door to another level of consciousness. Far more importantly, he states that who you meet in the afterlife and what you experience there will reflect your present beliefs, expectations, and level of awareness.

About the Author:
Lisa Dianne McInnes has always been fascinated with spirituality and the human experience. She prides herself on always being committed to the truth, even when it hurts, and believes in being reliable, trustworthy, honest, and loyal to those she loves.

However, in 2012, when tragedy struck and shattered her family, Lisa's beliefs were tested and she was forced to undergo a profound inner transformation. In doing so, she had to acknowledge the trauma of her past but chose only to remember the love her family shared. Her solid understanding and belief in the theory of mindfulness and living in the moment helped her rise from the ashes and move on with her life. She believes the past can be like a black hole: if you stand too close it will pull you in.

Today, small things like sunsets, staring out at the water, and kisses for no reason are the reasons she smiles. She believes it is the simple memories that define us, and the ones we hold close to our hearts. For Lisa, writing allows her to share her struggles and experiences with others, and by doing so she learns and grows both mentally and spiritually through the process. Therefore, with her work, she hopes to inspire her readers to join her on the journey to find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives.

Lisa completed her debut novel, The Majewski Curse, and is currently preparing to start writing her second non-fiction work. She currently resides in Northern Ontario with her spouse and their puppy Cooper.

What is Vella? A Rundown of the New Platform for Readers

What is Vella? It’s a new reading platform by Amazon available through their website or the Kindle iOS app. It works very similar to other online serial platforms like Wattpad and Radish, with a coin or token pay system to unlock episodes. Each story has 3 FREE episodes to get the flavor of the story, and then can be unlocked further after purchasing tokens. The tokens can be purchased in different packages, with more given for the more expensive bundles.

Paid episodes are priced by word count. For example, 3500 words in an episode would be 35 tokens. The word limit on Vella per episode is 600 to 5,000 words. So, no episode can be more than 50 tokens or at the very least, 6 tokens. When logging into Amazon’s website or through the iOS app, you can get 200 free tokens to start reading. You can follow stories and like individual episodes. After purchasing your first bundle of tokens, you are awarded a weekly “Fav” which you can bestow on your favorite story you’ve read that week. The likes, favs and follows all help stories become more visible in the system like many other platforms.

The fastest and easiest way to find stories are to follow direct links to them. Each story is assigned an ASIN, but I have found that search abilities on Vella can be hard to isolate. The easiest way to find Vella stories by your favorite author is by doing a search with their author name, a combination of their story title and their author name, or just the story name. Seaching for just Vella doesn’t seem to bring up much yet. But the system is still new, and things are being sorted out daily as the platform gets more use.

Eseld finished her punch and looked away.

“I was being friendly with the viscount, on a purely decent level, on my part.”

“I’m worried about you. Men can take advantage.

As in being purely mercenary.” Robert’s emotion rose to the surface, rawer than he wished. “I want you to be very cautious.”

“I’m aware of greedy men. And I’m not romantically involved, if that’s what concerns you.” She didn’t sound angry, more a question. A yearning?

“Are you collecting friends or inquiring where you should not?” He toned down his rhetoric, not wishing to upset her.

“That again. You think me foolish, or incapable.”

Her reply was soft despite what she stated. She didn’t deny her motives.

He moved closer. His heartbeat thudded; was she investigating a possible spy as he first surmised?

“You are one of the most capable women I know. Please, confide in me.”

They appeared to still dance around one another—this time with words.

She turned and faced him. “I don’t want us to be at odds.”

She paused for a moment and lightly touched his stock. “Is that all you seek, me to confide? Am I but a contrary girl who must be guided by you?”

“Truthfully, as we were always truthful in our youth, I want to kiss you.”

He cupped her upper arms and couldn’t believe he’d said that aloud. Her jasmine perfume invaded his senses.

“Pardon my boldness. I’m not of your station anymore, am I?”

“That doesn’t matter to me,” she whispered. “But aren’t you still in mourning?”

She's the One Who Doesn't Say Much by S.R. Cronin

Do you know what your problem is?

Olivine knows hers. This quiet thirteenth-century artist has been hiding a secret as she travels to K'ba to meet her friends. Others assume she's fallen in love with another artist, but it's much worse than that. For on the way to K'ba is the dirt poor nichna of Scrud, a place scorned by other Ilarians. And in Scrud is the one man who understands her.

However, Bohdan recognizes the dangers posed by an impending Mongol invasion. When he learns of Olivine's unusual visual powers, he convinces her to pick up her bow and start practicing.

She does, though she's more concerned with moving to K'ba where she can paint all day and see Bohdan whenever she wants. If only her sister hadn't decided Olivine and her fellow long eyes held one key to defending the realm.

Then, as if life wasn't complicated enough, Olivine learns the artist community she yearns to be part of has developed a different take on the invasion. They're sure the only way to survive is to capitulate completely to the Mongols’ demands. Artists who feel otherwise are no longer welcome.

Where does her future lie? The invasion is coming soon and Olivine doesn't have much time to decide.

My mother and I sat at our dining table, polishing the eating utensils. As I told her of my change in plans, she laid down her cloth and looked at me.

“Remember, it’s just as easy to fall in love with a prince,” she said.

I dropped a spoon on the floor.

“You’ve been saying that to me since I was six. What if I don’t want a prince?”

“Oh, don’t be so defensive. I’d think a young woman like you would want a husband with all the means possible.”

“What do you mean like me?”

“You know. One who wants to paint. You must realize the arts are the prerogative of women with rich husbands. Anything less than a house full of servants, and you’ll be too busy with your chores to have a hobby.”

Did she suspect I planned to live on my own?

“You spend a lot of time over in K’ba,” she said with a knowing smile. “I understand the place is full of free spirits who probably appeal to you, but think twice. An artist husband won’t give you the life you want. He’ll expect you to take care of him while he paints.”

No. She suspected I’d fallen in love with another artist.

“There’s nothing wrong with trying out possibilities, dear. That’s what being a tidzy is for. But you’re outgrowing your time. Consider being more friendly. I’m told the boys here thought you didn’t like them because you kept to yourself so much as you grew up.”

“I liked the boys fine, Mom. They were all busy paying attention to Celestine. She saved me from a lot of stupid conversations.”

“Well, there aren’t many men who can give you the future you want. Remember that.”

She had no idea of the future I wanted, and it was probably best kept that way.

Amanda911 by Mark Schreiber

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Chocolate chip. Graeters, from my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, makes theirs with impractically large chunks of chocolate—more like bricks than chips. Who needs the ice cream?

Which mythological creature are you most like?

Genie, because I make other people’s wishes come true, or try.

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.

Illustrated dinosaur books when I was three or four. First novel: The Hobbit in sixth grade.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

Most of my books start with themes I want to explore. I often have the beginning and end before I write, and I outline vaguely as I go along. I usually create a character to go along with the theme and try to inhabit them so that they lead me where they want to go, rather than the other way around. For Amanda911, my niece’s accident and personality sparked the kind of influencer whose journey I wanted to follow—an ordinary girl with only three PingPong followers, who doesn’t want to be an influencer!

Describe your writing space.

Wherever I am. I believe writing, or original writing, as opposed to formula writing is, like influencing, a 24/7 profession.

“Sixteen-year-old Iowa schoolgirl Amanda Dizon may be the nation’s most unremarkable teenager, until she falls down a well and finds herself instantaneously transformed from irrelevant to influencer. Mark Schreiber’s sly, rollicking masterpiece, Amanda911, follows Amanda’s escapades and sends up the craven, fame-obsessed virtual culture of today’s adolescents. As insightful as Dickens and as innovative as Heller, Schreiber is the definitive satirist of the social media generation.”—Jacob M. Appel, author of Einstein’s Beach House

The Influencer Festival was the brainchild of Emerson Frost, a Silicon Valley billionaire who thought Burning Man contained the wrong-colored sand and not nearly enough water. The 150 influencers and their guests were comped their trip, and the models, celebrity chefs and musicians were paid. He sold sponsorships and documentary rights, but the festival wasn’t meant to make a profit. Rather he used it as a tax-deductible party and a way to promote his cloud data company.

He had built thatched-roof huts; communal showers and toilets; an amphitheater; a windowless e-sports auditorium equipped with rows of consoles and big screens; an indoor disco with a bar; three restaurants in white tents, with bars of their own; a swimming pool with bar service; and a dedicated cell tower. All behind a secluded white sand beach. And there was a dock long enough to moor his yacht, and other pleasure boats. And a helipad.

Wow! said Amanda as we were driven through the gate. This is like a camp for rich people.

About the Author:
Mark Schreiber was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1960, graduated high school at age fifteen and began writing novels full-time. It has been published in ten countries, received two awards in Europe and was shortlisted for the Austria Prize. Carnelian, a fantasy, was published by Facet in Belgium.
