The Lady Meets Her Match by Gina Conkle - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Gina Conkle will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Rough-around-the-edges Cyrus Ryland rose from humble origins to become England’s wealthiest citizen and most eligible bachelor. Called the King of Commerce, he thinks nothing of marriage until he hosts a masked ball and discovers an alluring woman hiding in his study. After one dance the lady vanishes, leaving behind a single shoe. The hunt is on, but finding her is only half the battle.

Claire Mayhew wants her hard won independence…a mid-town shop of her own. She resists the scorching attraction with Mr. Ryland — her new landlord, but Cyrus isn’t a man who gives up easily.

Enjoy an excerpt:

She peeked up at him around his arm, her pretty face impertinent among all that untamed hair. Her tone and bearing matched the prim coffee shop proprietress, but the view was pure brazen tavern maid at the end of her day.

His arms flexed. So, the East Ender gave him up. He wanted to thrash the lad for doing something so foolhardy as bringing Claire here. Too many bad things happened to women in this ward, even those who lived here and knew their way around.

Claire placed a hand high on his arm while her flimsy linen cleaned him. She made small, soft sweeps low, where his spine met his breeches. Her skirts brushed the backs of his exposed calves, something more intimate than their first dance. A wicked need to tease her struck, lightening his mood.

“I have a better idea for getting my back clean. It involves a copper tub, large enough for two.”

The swiping slowed. Her hand on his arm lifted, and the loss left his skin cool.

Perhaps he went too far. Then her palm rested on his ribs, settling there with discovery. The heat of each curious finger splayed provocatively on his flesh in a lover’s exploratory touch. A heady rush followed, sending a pleasant burn over his already-hot torso.

“Whatever your plans in that copper tub of yours, I’m sure it’s not safe for a woman like me.” She said softly against his shoulder blade. “Though I’m sure you have some creative ideas.”

Cyrus looked over his shoulder, her blond head close to his back. “Careful, Miss Mayhew, or you’ll admit out loud you want more to happen between us.”

Gina writes Viking and Georgian romance with a softly sensual side. She loves history, books and romance…the perfect recipe for historical romance writer. Her passion for castles and old places ---the older and moldier the better--- means interesting family vacations. Good thing her husband and two sons share similar passions. When not visiting fascinating places she can be found delving into the latest adventures in cooking, gardening, and chauffeuring her sons.

perf5.000x8.000.inddSome people in her small rural community think Ellen Hamilton, the business savvy daughter of the town’s largest employer, is too big for her britches. After all it’s the 1950s and women have no place in running corporations. But when the company is threatened with takeover by John Adair, the man who broke her heart and “betrayed” her family business years ago, she’s determined to stop at nothing to win. Yet, when the cool Ellen turns molten in John’s arms, will she discover the truth about the past in time to seal The Sweetheart Deal.
Enjoy an exclusive excerpt:

John awoke the next morning not wanting to leave the bed. Ironic to feel so lousy when he had what he had come for. He had a voting share of Hamilton Manufacturing at his disposal. With this, he’d be able to swoop in at an opportune time and snatch up an active share of the tank—not merely be the silent financial partner envisioned. John rubbed his eyes. Except…

Ellen.

He couldn’t get the picture of her from the other night out of his head. Her chestnut hair indistinguishable from the gold and brown tapestry of leaves. Her skin radiant. And, in his arms she was all earth and need and primal.

She’d arched her back and her nipples, tight and erect, were held up like a divine offering. Her throaty moan inflamed him. He licked and nibbled and teased while his desire to savor or devour her warred inside. She was no longer the girl who had trembled in his arms with desire and trepidation, but a woman. She illuminated the possible with her brilliant mind and could bring him to his knees with her sensuality.

And then the spider.

Damn.

But, oh…God, her laugh!

Later, in Ellen’s bedroom, with crisp white linens and the smell of jasmine, and pure salty sweet her, they made love once, twice. When she slept nestled under his arm something soft, winged-like, awoke inside him. A belief that a different life was possible, different from what the dark world of poverty, war, and betrayal had taught him.

How could their being together be so profound to him and yet mean nothing to her?
MediaKit_AuthorPhoto_TheSweetheartDealAbout the Author:Allison Morse grew up in a family of actors in Los Angeles; before the age of five, she started acting classes, which she adored. 3_9 BookCover_ContractToWed1891 . . . Jolene Crawford Crenshaw, heiress and Boston socialite, went from her family home directly to Landonmore upon her marriage, the mansion she shared with her handsome and charismatic husband. She’d never in her life worried in the slightest over anything as crass as the dollars required to maintain that home or the lifestyle she’d been born to. Her extensive yearly wardrobe, the stables and the prime horseflesh within it, even the solid silver forks and knifes that graced her table, were expected and required to maintain the social standing that she’d cultivated over the years. But suddenly she was a widow with little money and just her pride and her secrets to keep her upright.

Max Shelby made his fortune in oil wells and cattle, but lost the love of his life the day his wife died. Now, his happy, carefree daughter needs instruction and guidance as she grows into a young lady and his dream of becoming a Senator from his adopted state of Texas seems out of reach with few political or social connections. The right wife would solve both problems. As it happens, his sister knows of a woman, a recent widow, charming, beautiful and socially astute, but in reduced circumstances, who may want to begin again. Max signed the wedding contract sight unseen.

Will Jolene be able to shed her sorrows, anger and fears to begin anew away from the censure and hidden tragedy that marred her life? Is her new husband, confident, strong and capable Max Shelby, the man, the only man, to see past her masks to find the woman beneath?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Max walked slowly to where a woman, dressed in black, was directing several porters stacking multiple trunks and luggage. It was a detail he’d not thought of. He turned to the depot manager who was watching the porters himself.

“Can you get word to the Shaw Brothers to get over here with one of their wagons?”

The manager nodded and hurried to his depot, and Max turned back. Apparently finished, four porters stood behind rows and stacks of luggage and trunks, staring up at the train. The woman dressed in black was waiting, and the conductor stood to the side of the metal steps between the cars. He lifted his hand up and at the top of those three steps appeared a tall, slender woman. She was dressed from head to toe in the palest blue, starting with the tilted, wide-brimmed hat, to her jacket trimmed in black roping to her bustled skirts. She extended a foot shod in a pale blue satin slipper and accepted the conductor’s outstretched hand.

At first glance, she was stunning and sophisticated and sure of herself. And he was certain she was his wife. He walked to her and held out his hand.

“Mrs. Jolene Shelby?”

She turned her head slowly. “Mr. Maximillian Shelby?”

He bowed his head and touched his hat. “At your service, ma’am.”

She put a gloved hand in his, and he was immediately aware of her. He could smell a musky rose scent and felt the pressure of her hand in his as she came down the last two steps.

She’s the other sister…

Overshadowed by the beauty of her older sister, Lillian is better known as the other Tisdale; unremarkable and unsure how she will ever deliver on the promise of her family's name.

He’s a rake in need of reforming…

Will Colton leads a frivolous existence, embracing notoriety instead of managing his family’s fortune. Determined to forget his financial burden and his father’s growing resentment, he maintains a lifestyle dedicated to pleasure and self-indulgence. When Will is invited to the Tisdale estate for an extended holiday, he never expects to become friends with the forgettable Lillian. But when a family secret comes to light, he must choose between leaving London and protecting the honor of one woman or staying and risking the reputation of another.

Upon his return, Will finds the girl he left behind has come out of the shadows and into her own. Lillian’s finally the center of attention, and not all of it good. With his own reputation in tatters, can a reformed rake lure her out of the hands of London's bachelors and back into his own arms? Can he escape his past and reclaim her heart, or has he lost her forever?

Read an exclusive excerpt:

“Psst.”

The sound startled her and she dropped her charcoal. Lilly narrowed her gaze and looked around the garden, half-expecting Tamsin to jump out at any moment and scare her half to death.

Lilly set her sketch pad to the side and stood up, her heart still beating madly. As soon as she found the ginger-haired menace, she planned on giving her a proper wallop.

“Up here.”

Lilly looked up and saw the unmistakable figure of a man. She gasped, her pulse bounding in her ears. The sun was high and from her position she could only make out his outline. She shielded her eyes from the light and the shape slowly started to become discernible.

Suddenly, she was nauseous.

“Lord Colton! How did you get in here?” The wall was nearly eight feet tall surrounding the back gardens.

He looked down at her from his branch. “I scaled the wall and then made my way up this tree.”

“How-”

Will held his hand up, stopping her mid-sentence. “I used to be quite good at sneaking into places, climbing walls, trellises, whatever it took. Apparently, I never lost the skill. I’m a little rusty, but not half bad if I do say so myself.”

She hated to think about just how many bedrooms he’d snuck into over the years to have grown so accomplished in a skill that had so little respectable applications. Lilly looked around, validating that she was indeed alone. “You must leave at once.” If she were found alone with him ...

“Aren’t you going to ask what I’m doing here?”

Lilly pressed her hand against her forehead. Was she feverish again? She looked up and found him smiling smugly down at her. “I don’t really care why you’re here, only that you leave straight away.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

“No,” she argued. “You most certainly can. Just climb down from there, then leave the premises in the exact manner as you arrived. See—quite simple, indeed.”

Will climbed off the branch and made his way down the tree, shimmying down the trunk to the ground next to Lilly. “I tried to call on you earlier.”

Lilly shrugged. “We were busy. It’s Tuesday, my sister Ambrosia keeps a tight schedule and we don’t see callers on Tuesdays.”

He crossed his arms across his chest. “So, I had no choice but to take more drastic measures.”

“You’ve completely lost your mind! What made you so sure I’d come out here anyways? For all you know, I could have been any one of my sisters. You’re lucky Tamsin wasn’t the one to find you.”

He averted her gaze, choosing to look at the ground instead of her.

Then she knew.

“You knew it would be me. You’ve been watching me!”

He held his hands up, as if defending himself from an expected blow. “Not really.”

Her eyes grew wide and he quickly tried to appease her. “I asked after you specifically, and the butler told me that you’d be busy for the rest of the day, that Tuesday afternoons you like to draw in the garden. I just happened to catch a glimpse of your hair-”

“Over the wall? You just happened to catch a peek of my hair over this wall?” She pointed behind her at the wall that towered over the man before her.

Will cleared his throat. “It may have been a bit more involved than simply peeking.”

“And?” she asked, gesturing for him to move along with his story.

“And when I didn’t see you here, I figured I’d just wait for you to come out.”

“In a tree?”

“I thought it held some sentimental value.”

She felt her nostrils flare. “Wrong tree!”

He shrugged. “I couldn’t just stand here and wait for someone to see me. I had to hide somewhere.”

“Yes, of course,” she wrapped her arms around her middle. “Because that’s exactly what any rational person would have done,” she bit back, her voice dripping sarcasm.

Spotlight and Giveaway: Royalties by Andy Marx

America has never seen anything to match the innovation, energy, romance, and excitement of the 20th Century. And the embodiment of all this is Eve Solomon, a young woman who embraces the vitality of the times with a fervor. Determined to make a name for herself in the fledgling music business of 1908, she ultimately becomes wildly successful. But the same steely determination that takes her to the heights of the entertainment world cannot bring her the one thing she wants more than anything: the love of her life, Alex Getz, a struggling Vaudeville comic who becomes one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. As their careers and lives intersect across the years, there is a price to pay—a royalty for true love that can never be measured.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Three little words.

That’s all they were, but every time she heard him say them, they had the same impact.

“Marry me, Eve,” came the voice through the phone.

“Alex, how many times have I heard that from you?” Eve paused to catch her breath. Though almost eighty-five, her bright eyes and delicate face made her look much younger.

“I don’t know how much time I’ve got left, but I want to spend it with you,” Alex said.

Eve sat alone on a couch in the living room of her rambling Beverly Hills home, trying to comprehend what she was hearing. She remembered all the times Alex had proposed, always to have something, usually another woman, get in the way. Hurt at the memory, her thoughts turned to the current Mrs. Getz, his curvaceous thirty-five-year-old former secretary. It had only been five years since they were married.

“Where’s Marcie?” Eve asked, guessing she had probably walked out on him, like the previous three wives. Eve wondered if she’d kept her sanity, something not one of the others managed during their stormy marriages to Alex.

“She’s dead.” He paused and then continued. “I shot the bitch ten minutes ago.”

Sullivan's Way by Wilhelmina Stolen - Book Review and Giveaway

(Historical Romance)

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Wilhelmina will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A single day shattered her life and set in motion, events that would change the Sullivan family for generations.

Marnie Joe Sullivan had the perfect life as the daughter of a wealthy Virginia businessman, but perfection wouldn't last. As the War Between the States ends, she is struggling to keep her family together. After a botched robbery, fleeing rebels leave her mother dead and Marnie at the mercy of a killer. The year is 1867 and Virginia is still home to Confederate conspirators and a killer that must be stopped. Loyalty and love run deep in the Sullivan family and Marnie is no exception. As the eldest Sullivan, she feels obligated to rescue her father from the hangman’s noose. But a jailbreak at midnight lands her in the arms of Marshal Mason Kane.

Death is never fair. Mason Kane is proof of that. The horror of war and the death of his brother made him a drunk. Consumed by guilt and grief, he finds himself occupying Richmond saloons and starting fights. But a forgotten promise to his brother forces him to put down the bottle and accept a friend’s plea for help. Mason has no idea that the scrawny, mud covered boy he just hit is Sullivan’s daughter and he has no idea just how tempting she is until he tries to mend her wounds. Bound by honor and promise, Mason sets out to find a killer. What he finds is the outlaw Marnie Sullivan. A woman he can’t live without and secrets that lie in the way.

Read my review:

I love big sprawling family sagas, where you can follow a family over generations, and I have just found another such series to feed my addiction. This is the first book of the Way of Hearts series which introduces the family.

The story jumps right into the action, with Marnie Joe planning a jail break. She's not had an easy life for the past year--her mother was killed and she and her sister captured by renegade Confederate soldiers. I half expected this to be the second book of the series--I was sure that there was another book which told this story. Checking the author's website I found out that I was close--there is a book that tells this story, but it's not until book six in the series (that's very sneaky, Ms. Stolen!)

Mason Kane is asked by a friend to see what's going on with the Sullivan's and he discovers more than he expects.

Filled with mystery, passion, misunderstandings, and --above all else--deep and abiding family love, Ms. Stolen has penned some characters who are very real and very engaging. They are definitely not perfect, but that's what makes them so interesting. This reader became very invested in them--to the point where she stayed up reading way too late!

The secondary characters were equally s well-drawn as Marnie and Mason. And, I was excited to see that the next book features two of these characters. There's a mystery surrounding Lucas and I can hardly wait to find out what it is. Hopefully some of it will be revealed this fall.

Good job, Ms. Stolen. With this one book, you have gone on my auto-buy list!

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Clear light made its way over the mountains, pouring into the valley, and a briskness clung to the morning air. Mason looked out over the porch railing at his first real look at the Sullivan place. Dawn had brought the land to life, and he could see at least ten houses scattered along the road. A horse and wagon galloped across the small wooden bridge. The saw mill that sat to the left began to scream as wood hit metal, and across the dirt road, children ran laughing into the church house that doubled as a school.

The land was small, but self-sufficient. With a little work, this settlement could be a thriving town. No wonder Talon wanted the place. Mason’s eyes followed the road as it curved and veered off to the right, into the tree line. Bright fingers of light climbed their way over the mountain and grabbed his attention. The top half of the mountain was nothing but massive boulders that dwindled off into the vegetation on one side, while the other side dropped a couple of hundred feet to the valley floor. He closed his eyes and lay back against the rocker. His mind went back to Marnie. That was her name. He ran his tongue over his lips, catching a hint of her sweetness. His hands opened and closed against his thighs. Thoughts of her made his hands tingle. His mind ventured back to the cabin, back to her body in the firelight. Mason could feel his body began to ache with need. Slowly, he opened his eyes and glanced down at his body. He rubbed his face and sat up. Damn frustrating!

About the Author:
Wilhelmina Stolen is the pseudonym for romance writer, Shannon Hayes. Shannon is a native of Kentucky and makes her home in small southern town close to the Tennessee line. During her adolescence, her mother's free spirited nature became restless causing the family to embark on a slew of adventurous moves across the country. The moves provoked a hunger for adventure and romance and introduced her to a wonderful world of history and beauty.

As with most writers, her stories began at an early age with long sessions of seclusion and secrecy. While her classmates and friends were outside playing, Shannon was locked away in her room hammering out ideas on an old 1940s Royal typewriter.

After finding Mr. Right, Shannon found herself wanting the comfort and security of the small Kentucky town she longed to escape as a child. Fortune smiled upon her and she became the family historian; gathering pictures, wills, marriage certificates and everything else that somehow managed to fall into her lap. Stories flooded her mind and writing quickly became an obsession that turned into the Way of Hearts Saga. The saga spans six generations and three families.

Free-Spirited…

Clarissa Sullivan dreams for more from life than sipping tepid tea in stifling parlors in Victorian Boston. She defies her family’s wishes, continuing to teach poor immigrant children in Boston’s West End, finding a much-needed purpose to her life.

Radical…

As a suffragette, Clarissa is considered a firebrand radical no man would desire. For why should women want the vote when men have sheltered women from the distasteful aspects of politics and law?

Determined…

When love blossoms between Clarissa and Gabriel McLeod, a struggling cabinetmaker, her family objects. Clarissa’s love and determination will be tested as she faces class prejudices, manipulative family members and social convention in order to live the life she desires with the man she loves.

Will she succeed? Or will she yield to expectations?

BANISHED LOVE follows Clarissa Sullivan on her journey of self-discovery as she learns what she cannot live without.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“If you don’t mind me saying so, Mr. McLeod, you seem quite domesticated,” Savannah said in a haughty tone.

Gabriel laughed. “Like a favorite pet, Miss Russell?” He glanced toward her with humor. “I always think domestication ruins the better part of the beast.”

“But you wouldn’t want a wild dog in your house,” Savannah protested. “And horses must be tamed.”

Gabriel nodded. “I would hate to think you compared me to a horse or a dog, miss. I hope I have better manners than that?” he asked, raising his eyebrows mockingly toward Savannah. “Though, I agree, horses are most useful for our purpose when tamed, but I wonder if they truly enjoy working for us?” He looked toward me, although he did not push me into the conversation.

He let out a long theatrical sigh. “Domesticated cats, dogs. Domesticated women. Wonderful creatures. Wouldn’t you agree, Miss Sullivan?” He looked toward me wickedly. I had bolted so hard in the rocker at his words I had nearly flown onto the floor. I watched him with wide eyes, wondering why he pushed Savannah so.

Savannah replied, “Now you are offensive, sir.” She vibrated with anger.

“Isn’t that what all young women long to be?” Gabriel asked Savannah, setting down the filled mugs with a clunk. “Domesticated. Demure. Tamed to the needs and ways of their husbands?”

“You know perfectly well you are describing the ideal wife,” Savannah spat out.

“Am I?” he asked, sounding unconvinced. “What do you think, Miss Sullivan?” he turned to me. “Is that what you long to be, a domesticated woman?”

“No!” I blurted out before I could stop myself.

“Rissa!” Savannah scolded me, eyes flashing. She had begun to breathe heavily, and I feared she would faint with her tightly laced corset.

I blushed but met Gabriel’s eyes. “No,” I said. “I have no desire to match that description. Slightly less clumsy, perhaps,” I muttered.

“Yes, I agree,” Gabriel said, causing me to worry he agreed with my assessment about my clumsiness. “Domestication is akin to docility which is an unattractive trait in a woman.” He smiled knowingly at me, and I felt a flash of pleasure.

“Do you speak in earnestness, sir, or are you in jest?” Savannah demanded. When Gabriel merely turned to look at her, she continued. “Men want docile, demure women,” she expounded, as though teaching a rudimentary fact to Gabriel.

“Well, pardon me, ma’am, for not learning my lessons well,” he replied, nodding his head deferentially.

I watched Savannah’s face become flushed red with anger and was worried she would erupt. She generally kept her temper under control, but, when it blew, it was a frightening thing to behold.

“I’d actually like to meet a young woman who can think for herself and doesn’t want only what her father or husband wants.” His quiet statement made my pulse quicken.

Savannah scoffed, “That path leads only to misery.”

“Or tremendous contentment,” Gabriel countered.

Savannah stood, knocking into the table with such force she caused tea to spill out of the mugs. “I will not sit here any longer and listen to your insolent beliefs,” she declared. “Rissa?” She turned toward me expectantly, then headed toward the door.

I looked at Gabriel with remorse, wanting to have spent longer time in his company. “I enjoyed our conversation. Maybe we could continue it one day at the school?” I watched him, hopeful he would agree.

He smiled, releasing a sigh of relief. “I would enjoy that very much, Miss Clarissa.”

I had forgotten how his voice could feel like a caress. I closed my eyes for a moment, having missed hearing his gentle baritone. No matter how much I had enjoyed his letters, I had missed him.

Meet a duke, a psychic, a bodyguard and a professor…and one "guardian fairy" in absorbing stories ranging from regency and contemporary romance to paranormal and women's fiction.

Playing for Keeps by Mary Blayney

Actress Kendall Marshall is determined to get an autograph for her sick sister from famous TV personality Mike O’Hara, the Oprah Winfrey of sports. In the process she meets his brother, security consultant Steve Marshall, lands a job on O’Hara’s show and gets in the way of a man set on causing big trouble. As the stalkers attacks escalate, Steve and Kendall are thrown together and find it impossible to ignore the chemistry between them.

The Princess & the Pinot by Elaine Fox

When a beautiful woman shows up at the Vineyard Inn, wine manager Kim is certain she’s been sent by fate for the inn’s owner, Cooper. Self-effacing to a fault, Kim knows she can’t hold a candle to Principessa Bella, who also seems to know even more about wine than Kim herself, but her heart has belonged to Cooper since they shared one kiss as teenagers.

While Prin sweeps easily into the job of sommelier at the renowned inn, Kim is afraid Prin will sweep just as surely into Cooper’s arms if she doesn’t do something about it. Can she tell Cooper how she feels without losing even his friendship?

Kim is willing to try except for one problem: she’s almost certainly losing her mind. Or is that belching, swearing, smoking, farting fairy – who claims to be trying to help her – real?

Duets by Emelle Gamble

Duets offers alternating looks into the lives of two women who would seem to have little or nothing in common.

Screen star Molly Harper is on the verge of marrying a man who has swept her off her feet, thought perhaps hasn’t swept all her feelings for her first love away. Anne Sullivan, happily married for twenty-five years, is fighting to hold onto the man she loves, and hold off a confrontation that could shatter her family’s image of what they are.

Duets confronts a past secret that ties these two women’s lives together, just as chance events turn Molly and Anne’s worlds upside down.

Never and Forever by Lavinia Kent

Never and Forever is the beginning of the love story of two people who shouldn’t belong together. Molly, Miss Wilkes, runs an employment agency helping women of quality find positions perfected suited to their characters. Although her father held the title of Earl for just over a week before his death, Molly has never wanted to be a lady. She knows her place in this world – and it is not at the center of society.

The Duke of Radford also knows his place in this world – and it’s above everybody else’s. He cannot imagine a world without all the privilege and power that comes from being Radford. He’s had foreign princesses and heiresses dangled before him for years. Why would he ever have interest in a simple woman who doesn’t even understand that she should want to be a duchess?

Can these two overcome the obstacles of their own beliefs and realize that love can make all things possible?

Never and forever are both a very long time. Where will their love fit?

The Psychic Detective by Evie Owens

Psychic Martin Sterling doesn't trust cops--and the feeling is mutual. Detective Erin Healy needs more than a ghost story to save her job and reputation. Her partner is dead, a million dollars in drugs and money is missing, and all the evidence points to her.

Can a sexy psychic and a by the book cop, trapped between the living and the dead, unearth the truth? Or will a cold-blooded killer get away with it all...

My review:  Overall I had considerable mixed feelings about this anthology.  Some stories I loved, some I wasn't as enamoured with, but overall it was certainly a worthwhile read and a great way to find out about some new authors (whose books I'll be buying for sure!).

I enjoyed Playing For Keeps quite a lot.  I loved the author's voice and style, and the characters were fun and interesting. I do wish the story had been long enough to really get to know both sets of siblings better ... we only get a taste of the two who aren't the primary H/H, but it looks as if they may have their own story and I'm going to hunt that sucker down.  The story itself was cute, if a bit predictable and the heroine, Kendall, was a hoot. She certainly kept Steve on his toes.  This rates as one of the my favorite selections of the book.

I had a love/hate relationship with The Princess & the Pinot.  I loved the hero and heroine and most of the storyline, but I did not love the fairy.  I think the author was touching on the Princess and the Pea with Prin as well, and I honestly wish the time spent with the fairy had been spent on more character development.  I could see so much potential, and I think the conflict and premise of the story would have stood on its own without the addition of that element and would have given her more space to create a stronger story.  I wonder, too, if Prin is going to have her own story someday.

Duets was an anomaly in this anthology.  The other stories were clearly romances, but Duets was not.  It is womens fiction pure and simple, so was a bit of a disappointment to this romance reader.  That said, however, the author is clearly talented.  Her writing is well done, concise and interesting and her characters well developed.  If she wrote in a genre I enjoyed more, I'd be a steadfast fan. If you're a fan of womens fiction, you could do worse than reading Emelle Gamble.

Never and Forever was both annoying and frustrating, but also did its job well -- I'm sold on Lavinia Kent.  She made her characters so real, and the story incredibly interesting. What was annoying? That it was more a "moment in time" story with no real ending, than an actual complete story. When I came to the end, I sat in shock when I realized there was no more to the story and had to restrain myself from tossing my ereader at the wall.  I was so angry!  I wanted a resolution, I wanted satisfaction ... I wanted more. Kudos to the author for making this a story and characters I cared about so much.  This couple had BETTER show up again and finish their story, or I will find the author and shake her.

My favorite story of the anthology was The Psychic Detective.  Complete (and after Never and Forever, this was a HUGE plus), fun and unique, it made me want to start over and read it again as soon as I was done.  It had adorable, interesting characters that mattered to me and a plot that was intriguing and fun.  I've never read this author before, but I'm definitely adding her to the list of ones to watch.  If she can entertain me this much again, she'll have a hardcore fan.

Again, overall this was a neat set of stories in a plethora of genres which allowed me to get a taste of authors I'd never read before.  None were wall-bangers and I'd say that I enjoyed the writing style and voice of every author in the collection.  If you're looking for a sampler, and to add some new authors to your list of ones to buy, I'd recommend this as a good place to start.

3.5 Flowers -  It was a good book. I liked it!

Wyoming Heather by DeAnn Smallwood - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. DeAnn will award a $25 Barnes and Noble GC to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so make sure to leave a comment today, and visit her other stops by clicking on her banner.

Thanks to DeAnn for answering all our prying questions.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Actually, I write in two genre’s: Historical romance and suspense/thriller. I have to say, though, the historical romance is my favorite genre. I do enjoy writing the suspense/thriller because it makes me step out of my box/comfort zone. It’s harder for me to write these books, but I enjoy pitting my mind against the serial killers in both of my books. I’m writing a series of three in this genre. Death Crosses The Finish Line is out now and available on Amazon and SoulMate Publishing. Death Is A Habit will be out the first of 2014. To keep my suspense/thrillers separate from my historical romances, I write them under the pen name of D.M. Woods. I’m currently working on the third in this series, Death Walks C Dock.

Now to my historical romances. I don’t know if I chose this genre or it chose me. I think I must have lived in the 1800’s, settling the western frontier. The rugged west and the people call to me. I try to make my characters believable, strong, and compassionate. It’s a challenge not to slip into modern technology or language. Wyoming Heather is a book depicting the strength required of a woman facing life alone in the harsh Wyoming mountains.

What research is required?

I do quite a bit of research for my novels. When writing suspense/thrillers, I have to research weapons, poisons, and language and background. Writing the historical romances, I am constantly researching what was available during the 1800’s. You don’t want to put in something only to find it wasn’t invented or made until the 1900’s. In Wyoming Heather, I researched veterinary procedures and medicines, cattle drives from Cheyenne Wyoming, the orphan train, and skills needed to run a ranch. A lot of the time I don’t know what research will be required. I start writing and suddenly I want to include something that needs more background. I really like this part of my writing. It sets the mood for my books.

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

I learned compassion. Heather is a strong woman…she has to be. She’s taking on a man’s role by running her ranch alone without a man by her side. She’s proud of her accomplishments, but she’s woman enough to recognize she’s lonely. Heather welcomes into her life children and animals, caring for them with love and compassion. She doesn’t stop there. She brings into her home Molly McVee, a lonely woman starved for a home. As I travel with Heather, facing her many challenges, I’m drawn into her ability to give freely of her love and understanding. I based my character on my granddaughter, Heather, who is also a lover and healer of animals.

Any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Only a couple (wink). I like the door to my office closed while I’m writing. I also like absolute quiet. I think this is because I’m usually in another time era, living my story. I really resent it when I’m interrupted. It’s a jolt to have my door open or the phone ring and bring me back to present day, 2013. I never tell my plot or much about what I’m writing. I find that if I do this, I have less incentive to put it down on paper. It’s kinda like I’ve already told the story. I might share the title. Sometimes I write out on our patio when it’s warm and summery. Aren’t laptops great? I lost my beloved daughter dog, my little Yorkie, Jesse, a few years ago. Since then, you will find a Jesse in all of my books be it adult or child, man or woman. I dedicated my book, Tears In The Wind, to Jesse and all who have suffered through just such a loss.

Plotter or pantser?

Pantser. Oh, I write down a few sentences about what I might put in the story. Sometimes I even follow what I wrote. More often than not, what I think will fit doesn’t. I always have the title before I start the story. But like the yellow page ad says: I let my fingers do the walking. I love to see what flies from the end of them. I did read an article that encourages writers to be plotters. It was very interesting and someday I might try it. But I’m afraid that if I get too technical, I’ll lose what ability I have. Writing is a thrill for me. It brings me great joy. There’s nothing like seeing your book in print.

Look to your right-what’s sitting there?

My printer and a window that looks out onto our patio and garden spot. In the summer I can see birds eating at the feeder. And in the cold Colorado winter, I can look out and see them drinking out of the small wash tub of water we keep a heater in so it doesn’t freeze over. Now if you were to ask what I see behind me, I’d have to say my Yorkie son, Eli. I sit on the edge of my office chair, facing the computer, and Eli (all five pounds of him) jumps onto the back of the chair, curls up, and lays there while I write. If I pull a chair over to the window, and put a comfy pillow in it, Stormy, my four pound Yorkie daughter, will sit there. She looks out the window hoping to see a stray cat brave enough to dash through the back yard. They rarely do, but hey, it’s a chance.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Yep. Two new books. As I mentioned above, I’m working on Death Walks C Dock. However, it has taken a back seat to another historical novel I’m writing, Montana Man. This story has taken me over. I’m totally in love with Jesse and Wisteria, my two main characters. Hopefully, I’ll have it completed in the next few months, ready to start the dreaded editing. I have to tell you I have many, many stories just waiting to be written. I write down the titles and a few paragraphs, hit save, then try to forget them while I concentrate on the one at hand.

Do you have a question for our readers?

This is great…I get to ask a question. Sure I do. Do you like books where the male character takes the lead or do you want the woman the focal point of the story? Do you like the hero and heroine to be handsome and beautiful? Do you like books to be a certain length? Oops, that’s more than one question. Sorry.

This has been fun. I hope I’ve given you some insight to me and my writing. Next to writing, my greatest pleasure is having my books read and enjoyed. Truly, I mean this!

Heather is a spirited, independent woman living alone on a ranch left to her by her parents. She is also a healer of animals, domestic and wild. A woman doing a man's work, running a ranch that everyone said couldn't be done, not in this untamed, vastly unsettled land, in the mid 1800's. The ranch had everything she needed except water. She stole that from a neighboring abandoned ranch watched over by a lonely cabin and a grave.

He rode alone, coming back after five years to an empty cabin, a run-down ranch, and a grave on a hill. A former Texas Ranger burnt out on life and afraid to love. Whip had spent five years hunting the man that took his wife's life and left him to die.

Whip and Heather meet in an explosive moment on the banks of the Powder River. Both lonely, both drawn to one another, and both stubbornly fighting the attraction.

Whip vowed he would take up his dream abandoned five years ago and make his beloved ranch profit and to put aside the sweet linger of all memories shared by him and his wife. The ranch would be a jealous mistress occupying his every thought and every minute. He had no time or desire for a woman much less a pair of runaways from The Orphan Train, stowaways in Whip’s wagon and onto the Powder River Ranch.

But fate heeds no one or no thing. The criminal from Whip’s past reemerges in the present. Now, Heather is in danger and Whip stand, once again on the cusp of loss. Fate shows a strong, willful woman, full of love and compassion, just what she’s been missing in her life. And it shows a calloused Texas Ranger that Heather and love does flourish on the Wyoming plains.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

Her mouth was dry, her clothes filthy. She was wearing not only the dust of the land, but hair and blood from the calves she’d spent the morning branding. Hair, blood, and dust.

Some perfume, she thought with disdain. I’m a real lady.

I live in Colorado with my husband and my two Yorkie kid dogs: Stormy, four pounds, and Eli, six pounds. I’m a native of Colorado, but I lived several years in Wyoming and Montana. I draw from these beautiful states for much of my material. My historical romances are: Montana Star, Sapphire Blue, Unconquerable Callie, and Wyoming Heather. Tears In The Wind is a contemporary romance. Then I changed genres from my beloved romances and wrote, under the pen name of D. M. Woods, my first suspense/thriller: Death Crosses The Finish Line. The second book in this ‘death’ series, Death Is A Habit, will be out later this year. Truly, I mean it when I say my greatest pleasure next to writing is having my books read and enjoyed. There are many more stories just waiting to be written and enjoyed.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Eden Meets Michael

"Mister?"

Her voice was a breath, a sigh, and far too husky for her own good. Michael rolled to his side in the hay of the stall and drew his knees to his chest, pretending not to hear.

An uncertain scrabbling followed. A horse stomped; another nickered.

"Mister?" the young woman whispered again, more insistently this time.

He cracked open a swollen eye. On a line with his chin, he glimpsed dusty boot toes, a touch of lace, and the thrice-turned hem of a faded green skirt.

"Go away."

The skirt moved closer. "Um... are you hurt?"

"No."

"You're bleeding."

"Doesn't matter," he snapped.

Those contrary skirts billowed about twelve inches from his nose. "You don't look so good."

"Yeah, well, I had a rough day."

"Were you in a fight?"

"More like a massacre," he muttered. Hoss was lucky he had any teeth left.

"Pardon?"

Michael forced his eyes back open. She was kneeling beside him now. She appeared to be about 17.

"Why are you still here?"

His growl didn't have the desired effect. She leaned over him, a gleaming strand of auburn curling over the swell of her bodice.

"It's raining. I can't leave the stable ‘til storm's over." She sounded apologetic. "Besides, you saved me and my horse."

Great. Now he had a babe in bloomers batting eyes at him, thinking he was some kind of hero.

"I always stable Valentine during storms," she prattled on. "He's afraid of thunder."

"Well, I'm not. Go away."

Her palm, smelling faintly of leather, hovered, trembled, then resolutely touched his brow. He wondered if she was ornery or just hard of hearing. When she reached for his ribcage, he flinched and grabbed her wrist. "What the hell are you doing?"

She blinked at him. Green eyes, he noted fleetingly. Curious and innocent.

"Seeing what hurts."

"You don't listen so good."

"Oh. Did you already tell me?"

"Look." He struggled to sit again. "I'm a bad man. An evil man. And if you don't get away from me, you're going to regret it."

"Papa says there's no such thing as evil men. Just frightened ones."

Michael ran an exasperated hand through his hair, found a tender spot, and winced. His head hurt. Every blasted inch of his body hurt.

She sat back on her heels. "Wait here."

Suspiciously, he watched her rise and turn. Russet ringlets cascaded down her sleek little spine; hair ribbons bounced against her shoulders. She had enough patches on her skirt to quilt a blanket; still, she didn't have the manner of a cracker. And her accent wasn't southern white trash, either. He wondered fleetingly where she came from. Not this Tennessee border town, that was certain.

"I'm back."

He started. Had he dozed? She was standing above him again. He heard a snap; something woolly and musty fluttered over his head. The next thing he knew, she was kneeling, tucking a horse blanket around him.

"You don't want to catch your death of cold," she explained.

He might have laughed if he weren't so certain the pain wouldn't be worth the attempt. He didn't give a damn about his own health. Living didn't have much appeal to a physician who was a failure.

To the best of his ability, he screwed his features into a frightening expression. "I told you to go away."

"You didn't mean it." She dipped the hem of her apron in the bucket of water.

"The hell I didn't."

"Talking Raven told me sick people always say things they don't mean."

"Ow!" He jerked away as she dabbed at the gash above his eyebrow.

"It wouldn't hurt," she retorted matter-of-factly, "if you'd stop fussing."

"God almighty. When was the last time you had a spanking?"

Author Interview: Heather Boyd

I'd like to welcome Heather Boyd, Regency Historical Romance Author, who was brave enough to come to It's Raining Books and answer a few of our questions!

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

In the beginning, romance novels made me laugh out loud and lifted my mood. I haven’t always read romance novels, but when I found historical romance genre it was fascinating and I had trouble not laughing at the situations the authors put their characters in. I read Medieval, Victorian and Scottish but I grew addicted to the light heartedness of Regency era more than any other. When I began to dream up my own first stories the heroes were always wearing a cravat (or removing one) and trying to win the girl. I write what I love to read.

What research is required?

The true Regency (when George, the Prince of Wales officially took over from his ill father) encompassed nine years from 1811 to 1820, but due to the influence of the Prince of Wales the regency is often described as being from 1780 to 1830. So far, most of my research for stories has focussed on a few years (1813 to 1815) and I’m always stumbling on a new and fascinating detail of early 19th century life. Just last week it was a Pudding Hat -- head protection for young children. I’d love to find a use for that one. I think focussing on one time period to write in and research is an advantage. But how did I start? I read a lot of research books, blogs too are a great beginning for new information, but I try to read as much primary source material (books published in that time) as I can.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

That every character can be redeemed, even misunderstood ones. For instance, in my book Engaging the Enemy, I ended the story with one secondary character’s sanity in serious doubt. However, that character was to be the heroine of the next novel in the series. Once we were finally in her point of view I had a chance to redeem her, make her actions understandable -- she was grieving and not thinking clearly -- and bring her back to life. That’s where my improper hero stepped in, helping her to accept the changes happening around her and showing her how to embrace a more relaxed way of living. She’s was one of my favourite and most challenging characters to write.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

No muse or major superstitions, but I do like to write the ending of the story just after I’ve started writing the beginning. A bit roundabout perhaps but I can usually see how the hero and heroine will be at the climax of the story really early on, sometimes before I start. I like to get the dialogue and basic setting for that scene down on the screen sooner rather than later. Then, I write toward that moment. Hopefully that makes sense.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Pantser mostly. When I start writing, I have a strong idea of the beginning and ending plus fuzzy details of the major turning points, big decisions, my hero and heroine must make. I find that the more detail I have worked out in advance the harder it is to complete the story. My writing process is easier if I have fewer details set in concrete but that does mean I have to check research details at the end of the day while I’m writing or leave myself big notes in the draft manuscript to check something during edits. I truly love it when my characters surprise me.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

Mouse, coffee, water bottle, iphone, photo of my kids and a Thor Bobblehead. He’s currently wearing a hair tie of mine as a sweatband. The man is hawt.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

July sees the release of Miss Watson’s First Scandal -- a sensual regency historical romance novella set in Brighton, England. No lords or ladies but a hardworking banker, a bold debutant, and an uncomfortable debt. Here’s the blurb:

Overworked London banker David Hawke has two goals for his week in the seaside town of Brighton: one, demand repayment of a debt without losing a valued friendship and two, relax for the remaining holiday without further distractions—except he encounters his friend’s newly confident younger sister. Abigail Watson is flirty, bold, and determined David will agree to her bargain and save her brother from debtor’s prison. But is her game to prevent him from calling in the debt, or are her sweet kisses a sign she is after a much greater prize instead?

Do you have a question for our readers?

I do actually. I like to write various length stories: short stories, novellas and novels. Miss Watson and her friends (three more books to be released over the next year) are novella length, about 30,000 words. The Wild Randalls series were all novels - 75 to 85,000 words. I’ve discovered writing various lengths is fun and keeps me happy and I hope my readers, too. I’ve just completed writing the last novel in the Wild Randalls series -- it's due out in September. Series take a lot of work and energy to do well and I cannot decide whether to embark on another novel series straight away or to write stand alone (unconnected) novels next. Which do you prefer, dear reader? Series or not?

About the Author:
Heather Boyd is the author of sizzling romance with an historical bent. A fan of regency England settings, she writes m/f and m/m stories that push the boundaries of propriety and even break the laws of that time. Brimming with new ideas, she frequently wishes she could type as fast as she can conjure up new storylines. Heather lives with her testosterone-fuelled family north of Sydney, Australia.

Audra by Amanda L.V. Shalaby -- Review Tour and Giveaway

(Historical Mystery Romance)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual book tour with Goddess Fish Promotions. Amanda will be awarding a free eBook of her previous novel, Rhianna to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so comment here today for your chance to win! Click the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Audra Kingsley, a wealthy heiress, may not have seen much of the world, but she knows exactly how she wants her future to play out - and a coming out ball held at her country estate, Kingsley Manor, would suit her just fine. Her father’s wish that she be presented at St. James in London seems silly since she is to marry her neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Lord Crispin Brighton, but she obliges him.

Audra travels to London with her patroness, the eccentric Lady Sutherland, intending to return home as soon as she has curtseyed to the Queen. Unknown to her, Lady Sutherland is in no rush to leave London before the Season is over and intends to show Audra she has more options in the suitor department than Lord Crispin, a second son.

Audra finds herself surrounded by few friends and is forced to attend parties, balls, and operas - all while becoming the object of a secret admirer’s obsession. As Audra struggles to make her way home to her beloved, plans to compromise her into an unwanted marriage are underway.

Looking for a sweet, touching historical romance?  Audra might be exactly what you need.  Different in many ways, not the least of which is that the hero and heroine are already madly in love and promised to each other ... at least until fate (or an underhanded patroness) steps in.

Audra reluctantly agrees to a brief season, unwilling to leave her home in the country and her beloved Crispin, but she knows certain formalities must be met before she can be wed to him.  When her patroness, Lady Sutherland, decides they will stay in London for the season, and thrusts the unhappy Audra into the whirl of parties and balls, it's clear she has something up her sleeve.

I enjoyed reading this story. While a bit unremarkable, it's enjoyable and well-written.  The main characters are delightful, and it was refreshing to see how devoted they were to each other.  Their love was never in doubt, at least not to us (though Crispin begins to believe Audra may have opted to select a new suitor).  The whirl of the ballrooms, the mores of the times all make for an interesting historical read.  Though not entirely shocking, since the conflict is mentioned in the blurb to the story, it still was an interesting twist.

The author has a strong ability with her words, and that was the main reason I kept turning pages. The characters were well developed, the descriptions crisp and clear. Really, that's what took this story from the mundane to the enjoyable.  I'd happily pick up another story by the author and recommend this to fans of historical romance.

3.5 Flowers - This was a good book. I liked it.

Audra soon discovered that any suggestion of being denied acceptance to Almack’s threw Lady Sutherland into hysterics, and she was forced to keep the vulgar thoughts to herself. Audra, for her part, was already several days into her London excursion, and despite the charms of riding in Hyde Park, the fun of shopping on Bond and Regent Streets, the joys of the operas of Covent Garden, and the pleasurable company of Embeth DeBlock and her mother, she was quite ready to go home. As it was, her coming out ball at Almack’s was the final matter standing between her and Crispin, and Audra easily decided in her heart that, should the six reigning lady patronesses reject her application, she would not be at all disappointed.

On Monday, however, Lady Sutherland was released of her anxiety over the matter. The Countess of Jersey, the Marchioness of Londonderry, Lady Cowper, the Countess of Brownlow, Lady Willoughby D’Eresby, and the Countess of Euston, all of them familiar with Audra’s father, Guilford, Lord Kingsley, embraced Audra with open arms. Lady Sutherland was not a particular favorite of theirs, but since she was a previous member of Almack’s, and a willing subject of ridicule for them, they consented to her presence as Audra’s patroness. Lady Sutherland positively glowed as a voucher for a full subscription was provided to her by Almack’s owner, Mr. Willis.

On Wednesday, Almack’s doors opened at ten o’clock in the evening, and the commotion was unlike anything Audra could have envisioned. Even the most elaborate of Kingsley Manor’s balls that she had watched from afar had not seen the like, as an attendance of over five hundred made their way to the unassuming Palladian building on King’s Street. When Audra had stepped down from her carriage, she caught a brief glimpse of the others lining up behind her, and she started at the hallooing of coachmen and footmen who were doing their best to maintain order and keep the crowds in motion. She had never been surrounded by so many people in all her life, and the excitement that exuded from them was infectious. As she and Lady Sutherland were ushered through the doors, a little thrill found its way through her body.

At eleven o’clock, John Weippert struck up his band on the orchestra balcony of Almack’s large room. At once, the debutantes swirled along the polished, roped-off dance floor, a collective sea of corkscrew curls and braided buns. Girls freshly introduced to society danced the waltz and gallopade with square-shouldered gentleman who twirled their ladies gracefully while sneaking sideways glances at girls prettier than their partners.

The excitement and newness of the experience lasted only a short while for Audra until the flushed faces, the wide smiles, and the eagerness in the expressions of the girls around her struck a sharp chord. Hearts impatient to fall in love filled the crowd, and despite any thrill she had felt upon first entering the establishment, an overwhelming sensation of isolation now came over her. It was so sudden it stopped her breath, and the realization she did not belong sat heavy upon her breast.
