Well…maybe I can at least find out if there are likely men in the area. That’s my first thought, as another commercial comes on featuring a smiling couple who met online. Let’s face it. It’s Friday night, and I am alone at home watching a Seinfeld marathon. Besides, the online site is having a free trial period. If I’m quick, I can snag a man without even joining. That’s my plan…along with several thousand plus other people.

According to the US Census, there are more single adults in the United States than married people. With those type of numbers, why be alone on Friday night? I do wonder if they counted the men in prison, mental institutions, and on life support. If so, that actually decreases the numbers, but still I grab the laptop. I know the drill. I’m no online dating novice. Those photos when you initially open the site of people in your city do not live in your city. I haven’t seen them anywhere.

The smooth-faced males with soulful eyes, garbed in tailored clothing would stand out among the grizzled, tired men in NASCAR jackets in my town. I did see them on the promos for various other dating sites. That’s because the smaller sites are interconnected. You might sign up with Hottiesbeus.com and suddenly you are receiving mail and offers from maturehotties.com and singlehotties.com. (I made up the names, but they might become real sites.) The joining fee is only about thirty dollars to join the initial group, but you only receive a few appropriate matches. There is the thought of joining another add-on group to increase your odds. Resist. You pay for the same pool of men. The big companies who can afford commercials offer you more possibilities.

Knowing what I know, I signed up with the granddaddy of dating sites for my free trial. I have ten days—that sounds like a lot, but it isn’t.

Amy awakes to find her husband Mark missing, along with her memories. Her recollections of Mark include a whirlwind courtship and a beach wedding. Amy is determined to uncover what happened to her husband. How could a man who loved her so intensely just walk away?

The police have no interest in finding Mark. They reason he wasn’t ready for marriage and he walked. She wonders if his disappearance could be associated with her work.

Ryan, a close friend and co-worker, assists her in piecing together her missing memories. As the pair work together, they find that Amy’s actual past reveals a scenario that is so horrifying that it forces them on the run, not knowing whom they can trust. Will Amy’s newly recalled memories prove fatal to both her and Ryan?

MY REVIEW:

I'm a fan of this author, so nabbed this to review. The cover is eye-catching and the premise intriguing so I was excited to start.

Honestly, at first I think I was as confused as Amy ... this is likely partly because we're in her POV, but I still felt like a lot of things were put out there quickly. For me, they were a little too many to absorb right off.  But can I tell you how much I loved her aunt Remy?  She was such a hoot. She loved Amy to death, took care of her, put her in her place when she needed it and didn't take any crap.  I'm pretty sure she was my favorite character.. unless you count Sampson and Burton (a cat and dog, respectively).

Though the story started a bit slow and stumbled around, once it hit its stride it was non-stop excitement.  I never knew who to trust, what was happening, etc.  This was partly due to Amy having memory issues and being our POV character. That was such a good choice! We slowly get to find out what's happening along with her, and it made it that much more nerve-wracking.

The hero, Ryan, took a little while to grow on me.  I thought he was remarkably forward from the start, considering Amy had apparently just lost her husband.  Ryan dropped hints about being in love with Amy, touched her when he could, etc.  It felt a little stalkerish to me. But it didn't take long before I came to appreciate him as much as Amy did.  His change from a mild-mannered scientist to a sexy, sometimes dangerous lover was great to observe.

Ms. Wyatt did a great job building worry and anticipation and slowly giving hints to what the real danger was, without forgetting to let the characters continue to grow.  They mattered, and that's what makes a book good for me. I have to care about the characters, not just wonder about the plot.

Truthfully, while the ending of the dangerous part of this story was satisfying, I sort of felt like it was a little too easy.  This might have been different if we'd have been in other POVs so I could see what they were doing, too (like Simpson), but that would have ruined much of the rest of the story.  I'm a little torn about it.

All-in-all, though Love or Deception was a solid romantic suspense.  Top notch characters, good plot, and solid writing and editing.  I can definitely recommend this to any fans of the genre.

4 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

The tinny tingle of the bell drew her eyes as two guards from the center meandered into the diner. “Guards from the center.” When Ryan started to turn his head, she added. “Don’t look.”

Inhaling deeply, he leaned across the table blocking their view. “Do you think they followed you here? If so, what are you going to do?”

Her eyes measured the space from the table where the guards sat to the door. Too close. Maybe there was a back exit through the swinging doors. If nothing else, she could sprint through the kitchen. She had a feeling Trixie might be doing most of the cooking tonight based on her long disappearances. Cutting her eyes back to Ryan, she whispered, “It might be coincidental, but it won’t be good to see us together. I am heading to the restroom to find another exit, which means I am sticking you with the check.”

She fluffed her hair, pulling it up in clumps making it look more punkish. Retying her plain oxford shirt under her breasts created a midriff-baring top. Unbuttoning the remaining blouse top exposed her breasts with traces of the lace bra cup peeking out.

Ryan coughed. “If you want the guards not to look at you then I would say you are going about it the wrong way.”

The look on her companion’s face seesawed between concern and interest. She looked down at her breasts prominently displayed in her tied up shirt. It made sense, he was a man, and men responded to visual cues. No more than that or was it? Certainly not the time to explore her relationship with the doctor. “I just want them not to mistake me for the serious scientist type.”

“Trust me. If they do see you, I doubt they’ll even bother looking at your face.”

“Thanks, I think.” She slid out of the vinyl booth seat, squeaking as she went.

She refused to look back but put an extra sway into her walk, just in case the guards looked up.

Megan’s goal of being a loving wife ended the same time her husband, Jason, tried to choke the life out of her. She flees the scene with her young children with the help of the police and her neighbor. Heading back to her home state, she realizes Jason will follow and terrorize anyone who gets between them.

Megan becomes Elaine. She changes her appearance along with her name to escape her vengeful spouse. With the help of new friends at the women’s shelter, she pieces together the broken shards of her life. Megan finds the strength to trust and love again when she meets soft-spoken Kevin. He supports Megan’s transformation from abused wife to confident woman. Life is full of potential with her new place, love and career, but Jason looms like a dark cloud. Unfortunately, Jason is not a big fan of happy endings, especially hers.



I went into this book expecting a romantic suspense, and while there was some romance and plenty of suspense, really it's about one woman's journey to finding herself and her freedom.

I read the first couple of chapters through my fingers, sure the bad guy would jump out at any moment.  The story starts off running and Megan's debilitating fear is evident from word one.  I did question going to a women's shelter in her home town and getting in contact with her father again when she's trying to hide from her husband.  Still, I loved her dad, so I'm not sorry she landed there.

The author's done a great job with the heroine's character. She's believable and sympathetic.  I was surprised she stayed in the situation as long as she did, since she'd come from a supportive home and didn't have a history of abuse, but then we didn't get to see how she was broken down either, and I know that makes a difference.

I enjoyed the secondary characters from her kids (again, very believable... resilient but scarred from their experience), the women at the shelter, her father and friends.  Kevin is a great guy.  I loved how he stumbles over his words when they first meet, and how he's strong with her and not for her. He lets her change and grow as she needs, but gives her support along the way.

The author has a distinctive, descriptive way with words that I appreciated.  She painted a clear picture with her words and made it easy for me to see setting and people.  The undercurrent of fear throughout kept me tense and made for a quick read.

I think the end was resolved a little too neatly, but ultimately that's not the strength of this story anyway.  Megan and her transformation were the point.  And that point was made beautifully.

4 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Morgan K Wyatt, raised on a steady diet of superheroes, believed she could fly at a very young age. After using trees, barn lofts, sliding boards, and even a second story window as launch pads, she found her flying skills were limited to fast and downward. By the age of nine, her dreams to be a superhero needed some modifications, which caused her to turn to writing and horseback riding as alternatives to flying.

At the age of twenty, she had another chance at superhero greatness as being one of the few female soldiers trained for combat. The fact that women will be able to serve in combat soon indicates that all the witnesses to the grenade incident have retired. The grenade incident didn’t prevent her two sons or daughter-in-law from enlisting in the service. Having different last names probably helped.

Morgan recently retired from teaching special needs students to write fulltime, instead of in the wee hours of the night. With the help of her helpful husband and loyal hound, she creates characters who often grab plot lines and run with them. As for flying, she prefers the airlines now.

Seeking Shelter is a courageous tale of Megan Moeller who flees her abusive husband to start a new life with her children. The only problem is her soon to be ex-husband is not a big fan of happy endings, especially for Megan. This powerful, heartrending tale is now available from Sweet Cravings Publishing.

Five Things

When I was small, I was convinced I could fly due to watching too much Superman. I jumped off slides, out of trees, from barn lofts, and finally a second story window. I always flew fast and downward, but never received as much as a scratch. I now leave the flying up to airline pilots.

I was one of the few women trained for combat over thirty years ago. While I excelled with the machine gun, there was an incident at the grenade range. Apparently, you throw the grenade like baseball, not a slow pitch softball. The fact women will soon be in combat means everyone has forgotten about the incident. My two sons and my daughter-in-law are in the service, having different last names has been beneficial.

When I was twenty-four, I decided to backpack across Europe. I worked two jobs to save up the money. I may have told my mother I was traveling with a group. Originally, I was supposed to be traveling with my best friend. When the time came, she couldn’t get off from work, so I traveled alone. Every day I had to decide where I was heading and what I would do. It was both a scary and amazing six weeks.

I answered a submission call from Secret Cravings to write a cougar romance novella about a year and half ago. Since then, I have written four cougar romances, one weekend short, four historical romances, and a contemporary romantic suspense for SCP. I am very thankful for a publisher who took a chance on me. I have extreme appreciation for a great editor, and a talented cover artist.

Finally, my husband and I flew to Vegas to marry. We were married in the Graceland Wedding Chapel with an Elvis impersonator. We danced while Elvis sang Love Me Tender. Our story and photo will be in the April Ladies Home Journal in the Backstory section, or are least that was the agreement I signed. I don’t think I’ll believe until I see it.

Townsend Audley as heir to the biggest planation in Beufort County was also the biggest marital prize. Life was good at least it was before the war. After the Civil War devalued Confederate money, and stripped their plantation, Townsend became a not so great catch. The only person who stands by him is Yvette, a mulatto companion to his sisters. She jokes she stayed only to watch over him, which she does, quite well. He can’t remember a time the beautiful servant hasn’t taken care of him, almost like a wife. He’s lucky to have Yvette, but someday some man would steal her away. The thought enrages him. He’s unwilling to live without her by his side. Does she feel the same way? If she does, how will they manage when the law declares their love taboo?

Morgan as a child had to suffer through movies with clueless heroines rescued by smart men. Her mother dutifully read her stories where princesses waited for princes to jumpstart their lives. There were no proactive female role models in the media at that time, with the exception of Wonder Woman. It is for this reason, and that it is fun, Morgan writes about strong women going after what they want.

Eileen Sewell sparks plenty of gossip by spiteful matrons and their horse-faced daughters that she’d find herself alone due to her picky ways. Of course, she didn’t believe them. Then again, she also didn’t expect to be a mail order bride either. It wasn’t easy snagging a husband who hadn’t heard about her willful nature. Eileen finally gave up hope of finding love, and decided to settle for whatever she’d find out west. If that wasn’t lowering enough, she’d just witnessed the first train robbery. Unfortunately, the outlaws saw her too. Enter Marshal Colt Sheppard, who excels at extracting information from reticent witnesses. His crooked smile and broad shoulders shouldn’t charm her. She’d played this game before, only she never had a worthy adversary. Talk about bad timing.

John, the robber, began whispering in his oily voice.

“I found you, Red. It wasn’t that hard. Most people remember a red-haired woman, especially one that causes as much trouble as you.”

She wanted to protest the charge, but even in what she hoped was a dream, she knew to keep her mouth shut. The man kept talking, not in need of a response. Perhaps, he was having a long conversation with himself.

“I heard talk you cozied up to the marshal. You wouldn’t have been foolish enough to talk about what you saw, now would you?”

The words touched her ear, causing a shudder of distaste. The threat contained in the words was explicit. She fidgeted in her seat, trying to fake sleep while cringing away from the man. She needed to let the robber know she hadn’t said anything. Oh, she had, but he didn’t have to know.

With her eyes still closed, she managed to murmur the words as if in a drowsy half-sleep. “Not foolish, did not trust marshal.” The words reflected the truth to a degree. She did not trust Marshal Colt Shepard with her heart. Nor was she stupid enough to tell an outlaw something that might get her killed.

She wanted to break free of John’s oily voice and smelly breath. Could this be a dream, a bad one? Did dreamers know when they were dreaming? The cold steel of a gun snout pushed into her rib cage obliterated the dream theory. It also shot her eyelids up. Beady dead eyes looked into hers, proving a disagreeable reality.

Townsend would not believe her luck. Instead, he‘d tease her about knocking over a wagon of mirrors after he dispatched the villain. No Townsend, no Colt, no one to come to her defense.
