Soul Dark: Chosen by Reedy&Wade

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The authors will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

War is coming between Lukas’ Goddess and an ancient Demon Lord. But the death of his parents shakes his faith, and with the loss of his remaining family it is shattered. Blinded by rage, Lukas turns away from his friends and trains under a deceptive, yet formidable master to hone his magic and prevent the demon’s final objective--obliteration of all life on earth.

War begins! A forged weapon, Lukas rejoins his friends and sets after the Demon King. From a hidden crypt, where evil lies waiting, to the Iowa countryside, they battle to prevent the end of all they know. Lukas must overcome his doubts and allow the Light to work through him--to defeat both the foe of his Goddess and a new more familiar one.

Soul Dark: Chosen is a coming of age tale in the modern-day world when a war between ancient deities and demons culminates in a winner-takes-all battle that could determine the fate of all mankind.

Read an Excerpt That night, that moment, Lukas regarded the same jeweled black sky as he warmed his numb fingers over an overloaded burn barrel, beside the massive red barn on Theo’s homestead. He heard the angelic voice of someone he missed whisper his name as if she were right there beside him. “Sabine?” He asked, glancing every which way. He could feel her. Her breathing. Her weeping. And he could even taste the salt of her tears.

Movement at the outer edges of his psychic awareness drew him back into his lesson of the night just as a cluster of small boulders flew toward him; with a thought and a nod of his head, he hurled them back the way they had come.

Doctor Theo entered the light of the enclosed fire, leaving the shadows whence he had hidden to watch his protégé. “At last you show some semblance of awareness,” he said. He studied Lukas for a moment before smiling. “Beware distractions—however delicious they may seem. They can lead to your undoing.” He gestured toward the glowing barrel. “Now put your hand in the fire. Will away the flames.” His look was a dare wrapped up in the cloak of a command.

Lukas took a half-step back—he had learned much from the old man, but he was not crazy—not yet, anyway.

“Quit playing the fool,” Theo snarled, all signs of pleasantry gone. “Do it!”

Following a compulsion, he could not resist, Lukas put his hand into the fire, and imagined the flames flowing around it, which for a time, they did.

Theo raised his brow in surprise. “There may be hope for you yet.”

The heat and the natural fear of fire within all mortal beings betrayed him, however, and he whipped his hand back, blowing on two fingers, which swelled with burn blisters. He stepped clear of the barrel—embarrassed at yet another in a long string of failures—he could seem to do nothing right, nothing to please the ever-judging old man.

“Even I make mistakes,” Doctor Theo said, shaking his head in disappointment. He raised a single finger and gestured toward the barrel—the power of his will burst the metal apart and spread the burning wood within in a large circle. With a second gesture the fire roared up, reaching high above them. He stepped unharmed and without hesitation into the heart of the flames, where he paused, turned about, and looked Lukas in the eyes. “This is awareness, Lukas—this is control. Without them your battle with Belial will end before it even begins. And make no mistake—your war is coming.”

He regarded his teacher with a newfound sense of respect, which also bordered an ongoing nagging feeling that something was off about the old man. “I’m afraid,” he said, the only words he could muster.

Doctor Theo’s eyes shimmered red through his sunglasses for a moment, even after he extinguished the fire with a thought. “Then you will fail,” he said, marching away. He glanced back. “And everything and everyone you know and love in this world will burn. I remember what you told me about your parents and how they died. Your grandparents. Your brother. How many more will you let suffer and die? How much more can your conscience handle?”

About the Author: E. L. Reedy was born and raised in Iowa, where he devoured tomes of fantasy, sci-fi, and young adult novels as a child. In his free time, he is an avid gamer (D&D and Pathfinder). He has traveled the world as a soldier in the U.S. Army, and now lives in Iowa, where with his writing partner, he continues to pen works in the realms of Fantasy and Horror in the Young Adult Universe.

A. M. Wade was born the only girl in a family with five boys, she readily escaped into fantasy, sci-fi, and other fiction novels. Having traveled through most of the US, she enjoys using scenery and characteristics of the different states in the story adventures she created for the little ones in her family. Now, she writes sci-fi, fantasy and horror with a lifelong co-conspirator.

Together: Having lost many friends, associates, and even children from our home town over the years to suicide, they wrote their first novel, Upon Broken Wings. Told from the point-of-view of a young witness, the story teaches that suicide is not an end to suffering, but rather the beginning of unimaginable pain for those left behind and that there is always hope if we choose the path of life.

The Basement by Dianne Hartsock

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dianne Hartsock will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Alex is haunted by visions of the dying, but now it seems the ghosts he’s seeing are real as well.

In this sequel to ALEX and THE SHED, Alex wonders if he’s seeing ghosts. His friend Justin has bought the Fulton place, a beautiful old mansion on the edge of Oakton. But something’s wrong in the house. Alex has visions of a small boy, trapped in the basement, and a man at the top of the stairs who won’t let him leave.

And Logan Fulton has come to town, Helen Kramer’s cousin, a psychic medium who wants something from Helen, whatever the cost. He and Helen had spent time in the Fulton house as children and Alex suspects Logan has something to do with the spirits now awakening in the old mansion. But whether Logan is calling them forth or if something else is controlling them, Alex can’t be sure.

The child’s spirit calls to Alex, as do others trapped in the house. There is a dark entity holding them there, keeping the child forever in the basement, the others for his amusement. But Alex has never believed in ghosts, so what is really going on? As he strives to learn the boy’s secret, his friends are one by one pulled to the Fulton place and put in danger while Logan works against Alex, having an agenda of his own. Will Alex be able to solve the haunting of the old house, or will he and his friends be taken one by one, doomed to walk the dark hallways forever?

Read an Excerpt

Alex gasped, the frigid air, a knife in his chest. Where was he? Oh God, where had his vision taken him? His breath came out a plume of smoke when he exhaled, hiding the scarred wooden door in front of him for an instant. The solid wood, once painted white, now peeled in flakes, dark blotches marring the bare wood underneath. Black stains discolored the hardwood floor at its base as if something had splashed against the door and dripped down… Blood.

A shudder swept through Alex, his skin crawling as the cold air congealed. Anticipation, sharp as a razor, scraped his nerves. Something was coming. He blinked his eyes, wanting to wake up, leave the images growing more real by the second. His soul had traveled to that well to see Christopher. Was the same thing happening again? Was he really in this house, the horror forming an actual presence? He wanted to go home.

Too late. Hatred, hot and violent, struck him, and he staggered backward, horror building in his mind as a black shape took form before the door. A hand reached from the darkness, white, old, gnarled, the flesh shriveled into a claw, nails sharp and wicked. Alex took another step back, a scream catching in his throat at the malevolence surrounding him. The thing would rake his flesh, rip his heart out, anything to stop him from…

Alex paused, the world growing still, the cold settling on the ground in a thick fog around his feet. This was about the door.

About the Author:
Dianne grew up in one of the older homes in the middle of Los Angeles, a place of hardwood floors and secret closets and back staircases. A house where ghosts lurk in the basement and the faces in the paintings watch you walk up the front stairs. Rooms where you keep the closet doors closed tight at night. It’s where her love of the mysterious and wonderful came from. Dianne is the author of paranormal/suspense, fantasy adventure, m/m romance, the occasional thriller, and anything else that comes to mind.

She now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. Dianne says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee in her hands, which kindles her imagination.

Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

Soul of the Stormy by Jean M. Grant

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jean M. Grant will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five things about me that are…

1. Fun
I love all things pink: Post-it’s, flowers, nail and lip colors, clothes, phone case. So much so, it was an inside joke in graduate school in our microbiology & immunology laboratory. Our lab consisted of three gals with our male PI (primary investigator). We used to tease him a bit about our lab being all girls (I was his official first grad student, so since then the lab dynamic has greatly changed). Who knows? Us students (and one lab tech) were all in our early twenties and it’s what we did to make the long lab/classes days go by as we worked on midnight timepoints and grabbed free food at seminars. For one April Fool’s day, we snuck in early and decorated the entire lab with pink: flamingos, flowers, and Nalgene test tubes (yes, pink ones) capped together and strung up like streamers, and we all wore pink shirts.

2. Adventurous
I love to hike and travel (this one is a given if you read any of my social media posts or my blog). And wow, I have stories – the good, the bad, the ugly! One little adventure through Glencoe was quite the whopper of a hike. First, it was the rainiest autumn ever in Scotland. Our trail was washed out by a stream. We attempted fording it, but with no other shoes, icy water, and slippery rocks, we just couldn’t. Then we attempted to scramble up a scree covered slope instead, our only other option to continue on the loop trail, but to no avail. We had to turn back. Oh, also the last fun thing on this wee hike? Midges galore. I’m an insect aphrodisiac, so I kept spraying my hair. Lo and behold, my husband did not tell me I had hundreds of midges plastered to my upswept hair. Ick! But, it made for a fun hike and memory.

3. Interesting
I sang in a school play in elementary school and we needed to sing the USA states in alphabetical order and I played Betsy Ross (though I had laryngitis). I still have that song memorized. And my son, who loves maps, used to ask me to sing it to him to sleep.

4. Professionally
I wrote three full-length novels before my first book (Lucky #4) was published in 2017. Over 19 years of schooling, jobbing, parenting, and life-ing, I wrote here and there. I met with agents, attended conferences and workshops, honed my craft, and learned the biz. Where are those 3 manuscripts? Saved on CDs and floppy disks and tucked away in my closet (hey, it was the decade before “the cloud”). What did I learn? Much. Perseverance, persistence, and patience. Oh, and I even extracted a plot element from one of these practice books for A Hundred Breaths, my second historical novel that released in February. I tried the agent-big publisher route, but after a few years of querying (and more learning), I submitted to a small/medium press (The Wild Rose Press)…and the rest is history. Two books out, and two more this spring, Soul of the Storm being one of them.

5. Quirky
Hmm, I am not sure what to put in this one. I have 3-4 lip balms scattered throughout the house, purse, and car, and I constantly apply it (a nervous habit?). I still love Snoopy even though I’m 41 (shhh!). I talk to my perennial flower gardens (hey, they need love, too!). I do not like scary movies, but I am an avid fan of The Walking Dead.

Charlotte MacGregor lost the thrill of conquering mountains five years ago when her sister disappeared on a hiking adventure without her. Still guilt-ridden, Charlotte heads for a vacation to rustic Vermont with a friend—where she's surrounded by reminders of her devastating loss and plagued with unanswered questions.

Matiu Christiansen is an outdoors buff. He works multiple jobs to save for his dream of owning an outfitter in New Zealand. He's never quite felt at home in the United States and he yearns for his Maori roots, but his attraction to Charlotte puts a kink in his plans to move home later this year.

Thrown together by coincidence, Charlotte and Matiu form a kindred bond through their shared love of the outdoors. Can Charlotte surmount her demons to assist Matiu on a rescue when a late-season snowstorm hits? And can Matiu help Charlotte heal from the pain of the past?

Read an Excerpt:

Charlotte sat on the top porch step instead of in a rocker. Her breath puffed in a misty cloud before her as she waited. Again, the scent of a fire from the back pit infused the air. She traced the knots in the planks of the porch with the toe of her shoe, ignoring her thudding pulse. Matiu shuffled through the side door. She rose to help him with the cups.

“Hi.”

“Kia ora,” he said, smile deep and teeth bright beneath the lamps. “It’s colder tonight.”

“You need a jacket,” she said with a nod to his thinner long-sleeved top that clung nicely to his muscles.

“I’ll sit closer to you. Nice quilt.”

“I’m always cold. I won’t have much heat to share.”

“Logging in my assessment file.” He tapped his temple.

She shivered from nerves as he settled beside her on the top step.

“Ya know, we could have tea inside,” he suggested.

“What about consorting? Besides, I like the clear sky and fresh air. Night is my time.”

He nodded. “Ah, clear skies are amazing. I prefer morning. Not sure about tomorrow. Neil’s sick with the flu, and so is Kelly. They work on the search and rescue team, and Kelly also does mucking with us for the US Forest Service. Seems like the germs haven’t left for the season.”

“Nor the cold temps. Both tend to bite us in the ass in April.”

“I was serious. You going to share that quilt with me?” He inched closer.

“Nope. Get your own.”

He pressed a hand to his heart. “Shot down!” Tea splashed as his laugh vibrated.

Her pulse quickened with the idea of sharing warmth with him.

He said, “I’m knackered. That paddle got me sore. Bit more wind today than I’d expected.”

“You’re not the only one.”

He was so close. She subtly inhaled his natural scent. She couldn’t place it. Probably his shampoo… combined with sweat and cooking oils. They sat quietly, unsure what to say next. His nearness upset her equilibrium. She drank the tea.

Mimadamos by Chadi Ghaith

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chadi Ghaith will be awarding a copy of Mimadamos: The Eden of Choice, (US only) to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Lebanese author Chadi B. Ghaith brings beliefs that were held in secrecy for a thousand years to awareness in Mimadamos: The Eden of Choice (Fifthscience Inc., July 5, 2017). Ghaith’s book revolves around an ancient triangle of the most significant characters on earth, paralleled by three of the most significant forces in life, and their combined story in space and time. Journey through this fable and explore the ideas that have mystified mankind for centuries: good and evil, heaven and hell, the beginning and end of the world.

Did the ending precede the beginning? Are we only here on earth to comprehend its machinations? Is there room for choice to shape our destiny in the wake of fate and its brutal logic? Mimadamos is a unique, philosophically-rich fantasy which journeys through the depths of conflict and harmony that we understand as the spirit. It decodes the magic of the most ancient scripts known to man, the symbolic fall from Eden and the long anticipated armageddon, revealing a logic so unique that it brings history to its conclusive end.

The structure, simple at first, grew into a labyrinth of rooms and courtyards to accommodate the many functions Fate conceived as he went along, for his path was even then strewn with disorder and disarray.

When the construction was finally finished many years later, the home had turned into a castle. Fate’s followers spent all their time within its walls, and, as directed by their leader, they ensured that no man or woman would reach the interior unless escorted by one of them. Indeed, the halls were bound with spells to prevent intruders from making progress.

Now, for the first time since settling there, Fate left the mountainous area and traveled to the distant village of Mimadamos, a couple of days’ walk using his magic bridge across the Valley of Doubt. There he and Destiny would take their vows, and after the festivities, Destiny would return with him to Demire to begin their new life.

At least, that was the plan.

About the Author: CHADI B. GHAITH has spent many years introducing an ancient mind science called Fifthscience to the public; Mimadamos is his first attempt at translating the magic of Fifthscience into a modern narrative. He is a native of Lebanon; however, he acquired his high school and university levels in Texas. Ghaith studied Arts and Film at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He now lives in Beirut with his wife and three children.

Edger Lives by David Beem

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. David Beem will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Our dork of destiny rides again!

Edger is falling for Mary, his bodyguard, kick-ass spy, and cover wife. But she’s so hopelessly out of his league, it’s clear someone’s going to get hurt. Less clear? That someone may be the Prime Minister of Australia.

When Mary confesses her desire to kill the world leader whose assassination Edger’s supposed to prevent, Edger’s superpowers pick the worst time to stop working. Without a fully functional psychic superhero, their team of spies can no longer order him to probe Mary’s mind for ill intent. The stage is set for a confrontation that threatens to strip a defenseless Edger of his loyal protector just when he needs her most.

Return to the Collective Unconscious, this time with Listerine-chugging stoners, Hollyweirdos, commie-alien-kung fu robots, one space gorilla-unicorn, and an exceedingly lovesick Vladimir Putin.

Mind your fingers and toes on page 270. Those skydiving mind-control monkeys have been known to bite!

Read an Excerpt:

Google the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and you’ll learn this single-engine turbine-powered plane is among the most popular jump aircrafts in the world. The Grand Caravan model, with its 675 horsepower, has a good climb and typically seats nine passengers plus the pilot, but with the FAR Part 23 waiver, the number of passengers tops out at fourteen. The wingspan is fifty-two feet. A full tank of fuel gets you a range of 1,232 miles. The cruise speed is 214 mph. All this is Googleable. Less Googleable: the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan is exceedingly popular with the Russian skydiving mind-control chimp crowd.

These adventure-seeking chimps love the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan for its high wing and large exit door. They love to jump up and down in the back and fling poo while shrieking at the tops of their lungs. Most of all, they love the complimentary Chiquita bananas.

This group of mind-control chimps, like the others flying over northern Indiana, are wearing yellow-and-purple spandex onesies and Q-32 Thinking Caps replete with fancy blinking lights and telescoping antennas. They are well-mannered monkeys, despite their predilection for flinging poo, who’ve been taught it’s poor form to arrive at a party without a gift. For this reason, they have brought some five hundred pendant medallions between them, medallions identical to the ones adopted as the symbol of the Church of the Ladder Day Dudes.

The squadron of Cessnas banks two miles above sleepy South Bend, Indiana, in preparation for its pass over the Notre Dame campus.

Queen of Hearts by Various Authors - featuring Jae El Foster

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Adesanya, Jennifer Patricia O'Keeffe, Anarie Brady, Jae El Foster will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Greetings and thank you for hosting me today as I work to promote a book that I’m in love with, Queens of Hearts.

Here are a few interesting things about me to make you go hmm.

While visiting with a friend a few weeks ago, I met one of her buddies from Alabama. A very cool guy who was curious about my books. Naturally, I was explaining the genres I dabble in and what I’ve had released, what’s done well, what’s flopped and so on. He asked what I do on downtime to clear my thoughts. I admitted that I like to play Call of Duty to burn off writing frustrations. I’m not sure how he took that, but he seemed surprised by it.

When it comes to writing, I have a tendency to put my foot in my mouth. For years, I swore I would never write in the vampire genre. Then, in 2012, I wrote Restless, a story with a vampire that became a decent seller. I’ve also said that I would never write zombies. Now, here we are with Queens of Hearts, and my contribution is a teenage zombie romance called ‘You Don’t Eat People You Love.’ I’ve decided just to stop saying I won’t write in a particular genre because it seems the opposite always happens.

You know those reoccurring dreams that just get to you sometimes? When I was a child, I was hooked on Nick at Nite and their old black and white repeats. I guess I had binged too many of them, as one night while I slept, I dreamed I was in space on a ship with the casts of The Andy Griffith Show and I Love Lucy. The problem was that, for some unknown reason, they did not like me. So, without a spacesuit on, they threw me out into space and stared at me through the window, laughing and pointing at me as the seconds ticked down and I woke up. I had that nightmare for three nights straight, and to this day, I am still terrified of outer space.

I cannot read books written in first person. I know it’s a weird quirk of mine, but I find it difficult to invest myself fully into the thoughts and actions of a protagonist in a first person narrative. I even have trouble writing in first person. I’ve only penned one story through that point of view – ‘Elisabeth’s Holiday Gift’ in DCL Publications’ winter anthology The Greatest Gift of All. The inclusion is actually a revision from its first appearance in the 2008 DCL anthology When the Snow Lay Round About.

I’m as unsure about my writing as anyone – maybe more so than most. To make sure I don’t deliver crud to my readers, I have a wonderful system set up where I send what I’m writing to my best friend of twenty years, author Adesanya, who reads as I write and lets me know what works or doesn’t work. Naturally, I do the same for her when she needs that extra set of eyes. Then, my work goes to Jean, a wonderful woman who has been my friend and editor with DCL Publications for several years now. Jean tolerates a lot from me. I have dyslexia, and sometimes I switch letters in words, leave letters out, use the wrong words completely, and even invent brand new words. She helps me find all of those little things while further helping me transform the story into the best, most complete piece of fiction it can be. ‘You Don’t Eat People You Love’ in Queens of Hearts is no exception. It went through both of these fabulous women before publication and they are a good part of why the story is as good as it is.

Thank you again to It’s Raining Books for hosting me today on this exciting virtual book tour! Thanks to you, the visitors and readers, for checking us out as we promote our new anthology Queens of Hearts from DCL Publications. If you have any comments or questions, please – ask away! My gratitude to DCL Publications and Goddess Fish Promotions for making this tour possible. And a very special thanks to my co-authors Adesanya, Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe, and Anarie Brady, to our fabulous editor Jean Watkins, and to our handsome golden lord and cover model CJ Hollenbach, who worked to get us the perfect, sexiest image possible for this cover to represent the animalistic quality of the stories inside.

A romance anthology unlike any other, Queens of Hearts will seduce you, romance you, make you laugh, and make you afraid with four very different stories from four different, talented authors.

‘You Don’t Eat People You Love’ by Jae El Foster

An infection is spreading throughout the town, and it has made its way to the countryside where a party of high school seniors is underway. When the infection spreads through the party in a most savage way, Bethany and Tommy must flee for their lives before they too are either eaten like their friends or they become a part of the living dead. Will sheer determination and the love that bonds their teenage romance be enough to keep them alive, or will they face a fate that is much worse than death?

‘Regina’ by Adesanya

Her name is Queen by definition, and she wears her dreads – dreads she spent half of her life growing – atop her head as her crown. Her name is Regina, and as romance sweeps through the wintry air with promises of Saint Valentine and Cupid’s mighty arrow, she finds herself entangled with a handsome man who knows all the right things to say. As a love affair blooms and romance comes into full blossom, Regina and Clive seem like a match made in Heaven. But is Regina really the woman that Clive believes her to be, or will a dark secret put an end to their cold-weathered fling?

‘All I Want is to be Happy’ by Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

Michael is feeling down over his life. He works two jobs, has four roommates, can’t afford a car, and he’s as single as they come. Worse yet, after winning the crown at a local drag competition, he begins comparing himself to his nemesis – Madame Vivian, whom he stole the crown from. Now, as a popular author and a missing wallet come into his life, Michael finds himself on a series of misadventures that will either help him see the silver lining of life or drive him further into his self-despair.

‘On Bended Knee’ by Anarie Brady

As the Greek goddess of Springtime and the queen of the underworld, Kora divides her time equally between her husband, sweet and gentle Aides, god of Hades and her dominant, Grant, a.k.a. Grannus, Celtic god of salt water and spa. This arrangement suited all three of them perfectly for years. However, when Hecate, Kora’s handmaiden and supposed best friend decides she’d make a better paramour for Aides, things could change drastically for everyone.

Read an Excerpt from 'You Don’t Eat People You Love' by Jae El Foster

That thing – that hideous, terrifying being – inside of her house… what was it? She was baffled. It had looked just like a person when it arrived. Someone let it in, believing it to be just another guest. But then… then it went rampant. With the loud music and the celebrating voices to accompany, no one noticed at first. They had all been dancing or drinking… making out, or more. Then, there were screams that blended with the music, blood splattering that blended with the punch, and the deaths of nearly twenty Deerborne High School seniors – a massacre on Saint Valentine’s Day.

Bethany wanted to scream. She knew that she needed to. A scream would be a release, and she was desperate for a release of any sort. She could not unsee everything that she had witnessed. It was burned into her brain and forever etched into her memory.

She had left her home and the carnage within to find help… to stay alive. But Tommy… Tommy was in there, and she didn’t know for sure if he’d been eaten. There was still a chance that he was alive, and it was that chance that – at least for the moment – kept her from further fleeing the scene. Taking a deep but nervous breath, she prepared herself to return to the house and rescue her boyfriend.

And if they get off-planet alive, she'll have to trust he won't reveal her darkest secret.

Tally Riva is not what she seems, and even she's not happy about it. Infected, invaded, she's not quite sure how to describe it, but on a disastrous mission to a ghost ship, something burrowed its way into her body. Into her mind.

When her commander decides the best cure for what he thinks is Tally's trauma is to send her on the famous Veltos Trail, Tally goes without revealing what's really behind her mental anguish. Anything to be seen as normal again, anything to ignore what she's afraid is happening to her.

But Veltos isn't the safe place it seems. The chosen military personnel lucky enough to be offered the chance to walk the Trail are supposed to be the only people on Veltos. But Ben Guthrie, a captain in Arkhoran Special Forces, knows they're not. He and his team have been on Veltos for a month already, tracking suspicious enemy activity, and he's gone undercover on the Trail in search of a satellite his superiors are sure has been shot down.

When Ben's worst fears become reality, and they find themselves hunted by a cunning enemy through the thick forests of Veltos, Tally and Ben fight together to survive. And Tally has to decide if accepting the changes inside her will save them both, or be her doom.

TRAILBLAZER is part of the Verdant String series but can easily be read as a standalone novel. Other books in the series include Interference & Insurgency (Two Novellas of the Verdant String), and Breakaway and Breakeven.

Ben stood outside to watch the military runner come in.

The flare of the engine was visible because dusk had already fallen and the sky was the indigo blue that shouldn't be unique to Veltos, but somehow was. There was just something special about the color here.

“Nervous?” Irwin stepped out to join him and looked up, following the runner as it fell toward them.

Ben glanced at him, wondering if the guide actively worked to be this annoying, or whether it was just a gift.

“Should I be?” He kept his tone mild.

Irwin glanced at him, shrugged. “Most people are a little nervous to meet their fellow Trail walkers. It's a two week journey, and there's no getting away from anyone who's difficult.”

And certainly no getting away from them if they were the guide.

Ben crossed his arms and watched the runner touch down lightly on the hoverpad a thou away. It was close enough that he could hear the hum of the engine and the silence when it cut off.

“So you never said which warship dropped you off.” Irwin had turned to watch the runner, too.

“No, I didn't.” Ben kept his answer short.

Irwin gave a snort. “Super secret, huh?”

Ben said nothing.

“Do you Arkhorans actively try to irritate the living shit out of the rest of us, or is it just how you're made?”

Irwin's comment was so similar to what Ben had thought about the guide, he couldn't help the laugh that burst from him.

“Let's leave it at 'super secret'.”

“You see, we have da’ powa’ between you and me to talk to da girl. She wants to talk to us, too. I can sense it. She has secrets dat’ need to be told. We jus’ need ta’ help her,” Cornelia explained, taking a seat across from me. She lit a large hurricane candle in the middle of the table and started setting out some items that she had grabbed from her walk around the room. She started muttering something under her breath, something I couldn’t really make out. I was guessing it was another language. She almost appeared as if she was going into some sort of trance. Before I had a chance to react, she reached out for my arm, grabbing it firmly. In her free hand, she held a spectacularly ornate dagger, bronze and black on its hilt and the carvings too hard to make out in the poor lighting. My eyes darted back and forth from one hand to another, as if it were a slow motion car wreck and there was nothing I could do but watch. She had slashed the palm of my hand, swiftly, effortlessly.

“Hey! What the hell, Cornelia?!” I shrieked. I tried to jump up, but her grasp was still firm around my wrist.

She pulled my now bloodied hand above the hurricane candle and allowed three droplets to pool on top of the wax. She released me at last, and I held my wounded hand against my chest, baffled. I watched as she did the same to herself, letting our blood mix in the candle’s wax. All I could do was gawk as our blood mingled and swirled in a pool on top of the hot wax. The candle’s flame danced into something I couldn’t even imagine in my wildest dreams. It had life of its own, its body gesturing to Cornelia.

Don't Mess with Gracie by Carol Kilgore

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Carol Kilgore will be awarding a $50 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The mysterious Mr. Ott is trying to intimidate Gracie Hofner into being his internal spy at The Bastion Group. She’s learned a lot about him through several sources, even using information provided by the pair of ghosts trying to save their granddaughter. But it isn’t enough. Mr. Ott is an expert in hiding his true identity.

Gracie isn’t as worried for herself as she is for her family, her friends, and her new tenant, Milo Porter. Her feelings for him have grown, but she can’t show them. Mr. Ott’s threats involve those she loves, and one friend has already been killed. Besides, she’s certain there is someone else in Milo’s life.

It takes Gracie and her growing support team to unmask Mr. Ott, but it’s what Gracie learns along the way that shows readers the wisdom of the advice Don’t Mess with Gracie.

This is the conclusion to The Amazing Gracie Trilogy—a story so big it takes three books to tell it. Gracie’s adventures begin with Jalapeno Cupcake Wench, continue with Bluebonnet Ballerina, and conclude here.

Read an Excerpt:

“I’m so glad we were down here, Milo.” Cameron blinked a few times, as if she couldn’t believe what she saw. “She could’ve been killed.”

“No. She would’ve protected her head.”

I tried. How did he know?

Milo still held her shoulders, and now his fingers were making tiny circles above her shoulder blades. “We saw you in here and were coming in so I could introduce the two of you.”

“Nice to meet you, Cameron.” Gracie nodded. “I’m bleeding? Where?”

Milo took her hands before she realized she was moving them toward her face. “It’s not bad. Let’s go inside. I’ll fix you up.”

Cameron followed them. “Milo was a corpsman in the Navy. He knows what he’s doing. When I sprained my ankle a few years ago, he took care of it.”

“I don’t usually meet people like this,” Gracie said.

“Yeah she does.” Milo still held her hands in one of his.

Gracie turned to make a face at him. The quick movement made the ground wobble. “Whoa. I’m a little dizzy.”

“That’s all right.” Milo put his free arm around her waist. “You won’t fall.”

How was this happening? She was always the one in control. The person in charge. Yet Milo had stepped up when she needed someone, and she didn’t mind. That was it—she didn’t mind. She always minded when she lost control of a situation. Maybe I have a concussion.

Milo held onto her and led her out of the garage. He glanced at her car. “I like your new Jeep.”

“Mystery, history, and a twist at every turn. Brilliant characters and prolific storytelling... irresistible!”

"God, I can't even imagine." The weight of what Martha had lived through had made Anna feel queasy. She needed water.

"No, you can't."

She hadn't noticed how Peter was leaning forward, rubbing the back of his head, or how his voice had taken on a frigid undertone.

"Losing a child? I mean how do you get up in the morning?" Anna picked up her glass from the table.

"You don't—not for a long time." Anna froze. As she turned to look at Peter, his eyes, blank and dark, were fixed onto the candleholder in the center of the coffee table. She let herself fall back onto the sofa under the weight of the realization.

"When?" As if it would make a difference how much time had gone by.

"Nine years ago, in August." He turned his head to look at her. Anna didn't know what to say. What could she say?

"Her name was Sophie, the happiest, smartest, funniest, most loving three-year-old you will ever meet. One minute she's running and laughing, the next she's hooked up to machines with doctors telling you she won't ever wake up again." The pain she had felt in his voice had turned to bitterness.

"I'm so-"

"Sorry for my loss?" He finished her sentence. "That's what they all said, doctors, nurses, family, friends… everyone."

"What else were they going to say?"

"Nothing. Because there wasn't anything, anyone could say that would have brought her back. Words were just a waste of time."

"What about her mom?" Anna couldn't help but ask.

"Gone." He paused. "Without Sophie… we couldn't pick up the pieces."

His Secret Love by Anya Summers

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Anya Summers will be awarding a $15 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Meghan Mallory has a plan for her life and it does not involve falling in love. She doesn’t have the time nor the inclination. She’s too busy trying to save the world. But when a freak snowstorm puts her in the path of a man she has secretly been fascinated with for years, she is forced to reconsider her stance on dating. Spencer is rude and obnoxious with his bad boy swagger but then he rescues her when she gets stranded on the side of the road, like a knight in tarnished armor, and sweeps her away to his house to ride out the blizzard.

Spencer Collins likes his life just fine, thank you very much. As the owner of the lifestyle club Cuffs & Spurs in Jackson Hole, he has a bevy of available subs who are his to command – not that any of them have held his interest in longer than he can remember. When his best friend’s sister-in-law gets herself into trouble, Spencer heads out to rescue the little brat who is in need of a firm hand. But he never expects to be forced to confront the incendiary heat that has always existed between them.

As the storm rages around them, they surrender to a passion hotter than the sun. Now that he has felt her surrender, Spencer attempts to lure Meghan into his world. But will they let go of their pasts or will they allow secrets to destroy them?

Read an Excerpt

“I’m to tell you that your sister is pissed you worried her this way.”

Meghan squelched the ever-present guilt when it came to her sister and sighed. “She always worries. Why aren’t we going to Carter’s? It’s a hell of a lot closer than your place in Jackson.”

She studied his profile, the angular, firm jaw covered with a neatly trimmed black beard.

His gaze was trained on the road as he navigated. The way his big hands—the fingers long and bluntly tipped—kept a firm hold on the wheel made driving in these horrendous conditions appear effortless. “We aren’t going into town. My house is roughly ten minutes from here.” His gruff voice, the deep, rather exasperated, bass slithered along her spine like a caress.

“But I don’t want to stay with you,” she protested. She’d rather be stranded on Hoth or on the U.S.S. Enterprise without power. Plus, she’d been looking forward to a night or two at Casa Jones with lots of yummy food and the chance to hang with her nephew. She was indoctrinating him into her love of pop culture and science with measured success. Then there was also the tiny little fact that the thought of being cooped up with Spencer, alone, made her entire body simmer, and not in anger but anticipation.

“Why? Chicken?” he dared and glanced her way.

Meghan’s heart thudded. Her mouth went dry. And deep down she knew the answer was a resounding yes, not that she would ever admit it. With a deadpan glare, she snorted. “Nope. In your dreams, big guy.”

“Relax. I don’t bite. I have guest rooms you can pick from and we will hardly see each other.”

“Sure. Thanks. I just don’t want to be an inconvenience.” Not just to him but to anyone. Not ever again.

He rolled his shoulders in a manly shrug that was so distinctly bored alpha male, her entire body whimpered with the desire to feel all that strength against her.

And then he opened his mouth. “There are always ways in which you can thank me.”

The innuendo flash-fried her brain, bombarding her with carnal images she wanted to deny. But her body told a far different story. Stupid hormones. Her blood ignited. She pressed her thighs together to squelch the distinct throbbing and felt her nipples bead into hard points. Thank god the parka cloaked and hid her desire. She didn’t want to feel this way about him—or anyone, for that matter.

She cast him a withering stare. “Ew. Thanks, but no. You can let me out right here if this rescue comes with those kinds of strings.”

“Just saying, if you really feel that bad, I can find plenty of chores to keep you occupied.”

“Chores?” She glanced his way. His lips were compressed into a thin line but those midnight eyes of his, the ones she saw in her darkest fantasies, danced with merriment. He was teasing her, the big lug.

“Sure. I could use a maid or a cook.”

She couldn’t help it. Really, the man drove her to it. And perhaps her brain had not yet completely defrosted from her sojourn on the side of the road and then the tawdry images her brain had conjured at his innuendo… Her fist curled of its own accord. She punched him in the arm.

“You’re such a jerk. You had me thinking—”

Before she could retract her left fist, he snatched her wrist. “Careful, brat. Had you thinking what?”

And his dark gaze glittered, bored through her defenses before shifting back to the road.

What did he see? Did he intuit that she was fascinated by him? That the thought of him putting his big hands on her again liquefied her insides? Just the simple contact of his hand gripping her wrist, his thumb pressed against her wildly beating pulse, made her panties wet.

Portly Erwin Garnal relaxed in his high-backed black leather chair. He liked his black office, his black chair, his black kidskin sofa, and his polished ebony desk that gleamed like expensive burnished stainless steel. Erwin Garnal wore money like a bestowed heraldic escutcheon. It made for a special prestige that raised him above the riffraff of the mundane, the primary respected tool in an underling world where the only rules were his rules.

The center of his neat fiefdom arrangements was being rattled beyond his wildest fears by the voice from Chicago. Erwin Garnal had never had a panic attack, but it had to be kin to what he was feeling. He pressed the phone tighter to his ear. His office’s broad picture windows framed the pastel blue and purple wind-blown snow-curls peeling off the high mountain peaks.

Garnal’s pale insensitive eyes pierced the figure sitting across from him as he listened to the Chicago accent of Frank Walton, “Yes, Mister Walton.” Phone pressed harder to his ear, “I agree." His gaze razored toward an unshaven Ski in two-day-old rumpled clothes. “Janoski is right here. I told him there was nothing to worry about.” He listened. “I agree completely,” came his speedy answer. “We got us a bullheaded cop putting the squeeze on Janoski.” A fake smile formed on his cigar-puckered lips, “I agree. I'll personally make sure Janoski keeps a low profile.” He nodded, “I already saw that was took care of.”
