Harry loves to race around the streets of Dog Town. When he stumbles upon the lost city of cats, he finds himself in a race against Dog Town’s fastest canine, Grizzly.

The winner of this race will have the power to save Cat World, or destroy it.

Harry wants to win, but there is one small problem. The race is in the ocean, and Harry is terribly afraid of water.

Can Harry overcome his fear of the water and save Cat Town?

Read an Excerpt

Harry spied the bell of the clock tower over the treetops. He heard the bell strike the first of twelve chimes.

“First place, here I come,” he whooped with delight.

“First to the finish line has to take a bath,” Fleabag shouted, right on his tail.

“Stop changing the rules, Fleabag,” he barked.

“At least we can tolerate a bath,” Junior cried out, though from further away.

Junior was talking about Harry’s phobia – called ablutophobia, a fear of water. Harry suffered terribly from it. He was even afraid to get too close to his water bowl in case it tipped over. And he never bathed. His brown coat could very well have been white underneath the dirt for all anyone knew.

He could see no point in bathing anyway, because he often rolled in something filthy afterwards.

Even now, the thought of water made Harry look up at the sky. Above was a wide expanse of blue without a cloud in sight. Just the way he liked it.

Sneaking a look behind him, he saw Junior trailing behind in third place. Junior’s attention was more on the traffic than on the race. But Fleabag, who was in second place, was gaining on him. She was competitive, probably more competitive than Harry, yet something other than competitiveness propelled Harry forward. Harry was the champion racer, and he’d been the champion racer for two years. He wasn’t about to quit and give up the title.

Lumina by Paddy Tyrrell

Five Things We Might Not Know About Paddy Tyrrell

While most parents like to show off their children’s graduation photos, my mother hid mine in the bottom of a drawer! It was taken in the late 60’s and my dress was so skimpy and the skirt so short that the weight of the graduation gown threatened to lift it up to a cheeky level. So I had to hold the gown down with one hand while clamping the other hand on the mortarboard to stop it slipping off my long hair. A couple of years ago my husband found the photo and now has it as his avatar!

I attended the premiere of the Rocky Horror Show which was held at midnight at the Royal Court Theatre in London and loved it but when I recommended it to an American colleague he and his wife were thoroughly shocked by the experience. The following year it premiered in Los Angeles but it took a good few years to achieve the cult status that the film version has now.

My dad was in a tank regiment in Europe towards the end of World War 2 and responsible for signals. I have the original radio text he received announcing that a representative of the German High Command had signed the unconditional surrender of all German land, sea and air forces in Europe. It’s an emotional read even today – it must have been overwhelming for the soldiers at that time.

I was checking out of a hotel in Cairo in the early hours of the morning when the building rocked and the chandeliers above me swayed. By the time I realized it wasn’t a hangover but an earthquake the danger was over but half the management team were in the foyer in their pajamas.

I’m writing this on International Women’s Day and it made me remember that when I started work I wasn’t paid as much as a man, couldn’t do the same jobs as a man and wasn’t allowed on the male career path. But later I became Vice-President of a world-wide hotel chain and when I retired was on the Board of a hotel technology company. How much life for women has changed but sadly we still have so far to go.

A generation designed by sorcery to destroy your people. Two races mired in conflict. Can a pair of outcasts unite them against an enemy who would enslave them all?

The birth of ‘bronzite’ babies in Lumina heralds the onset of war. The people take fright at the golden children and banish them from the land. A dangerous move. King Zheldar, commander of the black dragon, is attacking Luman borders. If he wins bronzite support for his army of monsters, Lumina is lost.

Davron Berates cannot share his people’s hatred of the children and, on discovering he has a bronzite brother, sets out to find him. At his side travels Chrystala. A bronzite, she has twice his strength and three times his determination.

When the black dragon kidnaps Chrystala, Davron is faced with a terrible choice: save his friend or save his nation.

She ducked her head to protect herself – in the nick of time. Black clouds erupted from the dragonrock, awakened by their arrival. A host of vampire bats swooped in a blur upon the convoy, webbed fingers acting as wings. In their thousands, they streamed towards the Kuhlans. Courtiers and servants alike screamed in terror and ran for cover. The bats swarmed after them. They landed on heads and shoulders and hair, and clung with their claws. They spread their wings across the faces of their prey and blocked every orifice in a suffocating grip. The victims thrashed and struggled and gasped for breath. When their strength failed they collapsed onto the sand. With tiny teeth, sharp as spear points, the bats tore at Kuhlan skin and lapped up Kuhlan blood until they were satiated.

Salazai jumped down from Argentia and crouched against her flank, searching frantically for shelter. Bodies were strewn over the sand, and carts turned on their sides, dragged over by the horses in their panic to escape.

So that was how it would end. She would die here in the desert, her blood sucked dry. She shielded her face with her hands and peeked through her fingers, unable to stop herself from watching the slaughter. Lord Cantrek stood alone amidst the destruction and, arms outstretched, he chanted words of magic, his voice pounding the sands in time to the beat of her heart. Transfixed, she watched a twisting funnel of wind appear in answer to his call, sucking up sand and dust as it whirled over the desert.

Blame it on the drugs…

Ever since that night Cupcake had promised Allen, she’d help him, she regretted making him that promise. She’d also started to have a sense that something was basically wrong with Allen. She couldn’t believe he summoned her to meet him at this place.

A cloud of Chanel perfume floated on the air just as a woman walked up to Cupcake and placed her hand on her arm. “Welcome to my home,” she said, in a syrupy country drawl.

It took effort to conceal the shock of seeing Devine Corea. She was the daughter of a famous local sweet-talking criminal, Stanley Core, who was nicknamed “Stan, the main man,” her father had a reputation on the Southside of Chicago. The story went that her father had discovered that he had mistakenly sweet talked the fifteen-year-old virgin daughter of a brothel into bed with him? The girl had only been in the brothel to pick up the cash receipts. When she failed to bring them back to her father. He had sent out a searcher for her who had discovered the girl in bed with Stanley Corea. In that heated moment, Stanley was persuaded to marry Devine’s mother. Now standing in front of Cupcake was the offspring of that union.

Cupcake considered the woman standing in front of her. She knew her well. Devine was territorial. She ruled the Southside of Chicago when it came to gambling, prostitution and doing favors for powerful people. Devine was famous for the taking care of private matters. One thing about the women who worked for Devine. They were all considered a class act, and all were over eighteen. It was said you couldn’t work for Devine if you couldn’t produce your birth certificate to prove your age. Cupcake was glad she wasn’t into that career choice. Lap dancing and stripping but she wasn’t into selling her ass. She cleared her throat thankful for her career choices and said. “Hi Devine. I’m supposed to meet Allen here.”

Devine’s face lit up with an evil, conniving grin. “Yes, I know. When I heard, you were at the front door, I had to come greet you personally, Cupcake. I’d love to have you come dance for my guest, someday, soon.”

Devine’s house wasn’t a home, but a nightclub slashed drug-den, slashed house of prostitution. Anything you wanted could be brought there. If you had the money.

Twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four... one more, I think to myself, straining to finish the final pull-up. Twenty-five. Done. I then grab a thirty-five-pound kettlebell and begin the first of three sets of twenty swings. The clock on my nightstand says 4:41. I spend the next half-hour hammering my muscles with weights, knowing that is not the end of my morning workout – I still have a run. Welcome to my world. This is my daily practice, my religion. It’s the only stable aspect of my life. But I need it, crave it actually. It’s what helps me counter the nightmares and the pain.

It’s been over a year now. My thirty-four-year old body hasn’t physically changed since I left the SEALS. At six feet two, discipline and hard work have kept me at a steady weight of 197 pounds. In fact, my only variance from years of following the SEAL’s strict codes is that I grew out my hair. Now, it’s almost at my shoulders. I think letting it grow was symbolic at first, representing a departure from my former life as a Navy Commander. Yeah, those were the best years of my life. I loved what I did, and my guys were freakin’ awesome, totally dependable and loyal as dogs. But afterward, it was impossible to stay. I couldn’t trust myself.

Louis comes into view as I round the corner of the restaurant into the simple, well-kept yard. He's facing the other way, holding a wooden staff, not even wearing a coat. I'm about to call out and let him know I'm there, but before I can, he spins in a circle, extending the stick as gracefully as if it were a part of his arm. His movements are soft and flowing as he twists around a large cobbled circle in the middle of the yard. It looks like a gentle dance, but it's evident from the way he maneuvers the stick and guards his torso that it's also a fight.

Louis comes back to a neutral position and bows to an invisible adversary before him. “That was the swan,” he says, making me jump. “And this is the dragon.”

He steps aggressively, each strike hard and fierce. He jabs the staff out before him and twirls, nearly horizontal with it. A few stances later, he accidentally whacks himself in the shoulder with the practice weapon.

He bursts out laughing. “It’s not my best form.” He approaches me while massaging his shoulder. “Good thing you’re not my grandma, or you’d make me practice until I got it right.”

“I like the swan better, anyway.”

“Me too.” He blinks as a raindrop falls on his cheek. We both turn to the sky as thunder rumbles in the distance. “Looks like it’ll be a downpour.”

Serad is the powerful, handsome pirate whose relentless plundering is the stuff of legend—but only a few know that his true identity is Lord Alexander Wakefield. His kidnapping as a child by Barbary pirates changed the course of his life. Now Serad is the master of the seas, accustomed to possessing whatever—or whoever—he wants.

He Stole Her Freedom…
When Serad boards the vessel La Mouette to loot for treasure, he discovers a cargo more precious than any trinket: the heiress Victoria Lawrence. A raven-haired, emerald-eyed beauty, Victoria captivates Serad as no woman ever has before. But the fiery young lady doesn’t seem to understand that she is now a captive, expected to honor her new master’s wishes and desires without question…

But He Must Win Her Heart
When Victoria set sail from India, she expected the voyage to deliver her into the arms of her betrothed—not a heartless gang of pirates. Now captured, she refuses to bow to any man, even one as commanding as Serad. Sharing his cabin, Victoria can barely resist her attraction to her captor. But if she gives in to her desires, Victoria knows Serad will accept nothing less than her total surrender...

Read an Excerpt

Serad headed back to his cabin. He dismissed the guard at the door and let himself in, only to find his entire cabin in disarray. Fury rocked through him, and he moved threateningly into the room, shutting the door behind him.

“What’s been going on here?” he thundered, his steely gaze fixed on Victoria alone as she stood, straight and proud, behind his desk, her hands down at her sides. He knew the gun was in the locked drawer, and he wondered if she’d found it. He didn’t dwell on that too long, for he still thought of her as a spoiled English lady, who wouldn’t know which end of a gun was which.

“Stay right there,” Victoria ordered, lifting the pistol. “I’m a dead shot and I’ll use it if I have to.”

Serad was angry, and he found it hard to believe that the emerald-eyed, determined woman holding his pistol pointed directly at his heart was the same inane, sophisticated beauty he’d dealt with up on deck.

“Just what do you plan to do with that?” Serad asked in a deceptively calm voice.

“I plan to make you let us go.”

“With one bullet?” His expression turned sardonic.

“One bullet is all it would take to kill you.”

“But after I’m dead, then what?”

“I have no intention of shooting you unless you force me to.”

“I’m relieved to hear that,” Serad mocked, deliberately trying to anger her. There was no way he was going to allow her to reach the deck holding a pistol on him. She was his captive, his slave. It was time she accepted the inevitable.

Thanks for stopping by It's Raining Books! Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Although I am a huge fan of general fiction, and literary fiction in particular, I choose to write in the mystery genre because I like to be surprised. I love reading books in print or listening on audio, and I often gravitate toward the Reese Witherspoon picks on Audible. She has chosen some excellent mystery books like Something in the Water and The Last Mrs. Parrish. I love to get right to the end of a book and think to myself, "oh, no! I never pictured that person as the suspect." So I choose mystery because it's nice to be surprised, but I also like to address social issues in my books, the way Jodi Picoult does. She has written extensively about autism, the plight of elephants in the wild, racism and segregation, and school shooters. In my novel, I address issues like midlife crisis, domestic violence, addiction, and unrequited love.

What research (or world-building – for fantasy/paranormal/Sci-fi) is required?

I don't write sci-fi or fantasy, but I do own an editing company, and I often perform manuscript evaluations. What I suggest to my clients is that they make their fantasy world as realistic as possible in terms of strong characters and detailed backgrounds. It's okay if the actual society defies credulity, or doesn't exist yet, as long as the people and the places seem real or credible.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

I deliberately gave my protagonist, Tara, a number of challenges and several serious character flaws. That's because people aren't perfect. I don't like cliché characters; I would far prefer to read about someone who struggles doing the right thing or situations that seem not to have ideal solutions. Tara is 39 years old and terrified of the clock turning. This comes right from the playbook of my life. When I was 39, I was working at a university, surrounded by women in their early 20s. I couldn't stand the thought of turning 40 and being officially middle-aged. I lied about my age for three years, but then, after much hard work, I came to terms with it. So I gave this dilemma to Tara, because I think it's still an issue for women in society. When you look at China or India, which together comprise almost 1/3 of the world's population, they have so much more wisdom than North Americans. They revere aging and understand that with it comes wisdom – not always but certainly it's very hard to be an old soul at 21. So what I learned from Tara is that it's okay to keep opening a new chapter and embracing every decade.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

No, I wish I did. My mother used to read tea leaves, and I used to read tarot cards — I believed in them for years, but now I just believe in hard work. Boring, I know.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am a type-A personality, so I have to have a plot! Absolutely, but I've written fiction and nonfiction, and the most surprising thing about writing fiction was that in many parts of my novel, I truly felt as though the characters were writing themselves. I never felt that way with nonfiction.

Look to your right — what’s sitting there?

To my right is my bookshelf with a picture of my beautiful, beloved mother, Muriel, holding me as an infant. She told me that the day she became a mom was the happiest day in her life. My mother passed away from cervical cancer almost three years ago. She was 93. Not a day goes by when I don't think about her and how lucky I was to have had her in my life all those years. Muriel was the kind of person who would walk into a room, and suddenly the atmosphere changed. She was warm, welcoming, enthusiastic and sincere. Everybody loved her.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I'm thinking of writing a sequel to Finding Lisa. I didn't tie up everything neatly at the end, which would serve me well if I wrote book 2.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Yes! What are your favorite books and why? Which books kept you reading until 1 AM when you knew you needed to turn the lights off by 11?

Finding Lisa is a character driven story about a quirky Canadian woman named Tara who is about to turn 40. She dreads the thought. Everything is going wrong in her life from her stale marriage to her boring job to her hopeless crush on a 24-year-old guy. The only thing right in Tara's life is her best friend Lisa who has just confided that she is pregnant and the baby does not belong to her partner Ryan, who has a history of domestic violence. Then Lisa disappears and the search is on to find her.

All the carts were taken at the supermarket on Tuesday. I found one off to the side of the vegetable aisle. It had a defective wheel, which resulted in me almost overturning a display of cantaloupes. The cart was also enormous. No doubt this was a deliberate ploy on the part of the supermarket to encourage excess shopping.

"I feel as though I'm driving a school bus," I announced to the frail, pale orange-haired woman to my left, who was squeezing the small, unappetizing looking cantaloupes.

She smiled faintly and nodded. I wondered how she had the strength to push the heavy cart through the long aisles of the grocery store at her age.

"Mum, I'll go with you to one of those Women against Rape meetings if you want?" Devon said to my astonishment, his voice rising at the end of his sentence. "There’s only one condition. You have to watch 8 Mile with me."

"8 Mile? Isn’t that the movie based on the book by Stephen King?"

"Nah, you’re thinking about The Green Mile," Devon replied. "8 Mile is the story of a rapper in Detroit. It's based on the life of Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers. Eminem even stars in it," he said with increasing enthusiasm.

"I think it’ll give you a better idea of where he's coming from. You know, you're always talking about these girls who've been, like, abused and what horrible lives they've had. You even feel bad about boys who were taken advantage of by priests or their hockey coaches. So why don't you have any sympathy for Marshall? His mother was abusive. She was mean to him, and she did drugs! Also, she, like, gave him something called Munchkins syndrome," Devon added uncertainly.

"Munchausen syndrome?” I asked, trying to picture the tough guy with the tattoos and bad attitude as a small child with a manipulative and controlling mother.

"Yeah, that sounds right. She made him feel sick when he was totally healthy. And, Mum, I know you would respect the way Em felt about his little brother, Nathan. He, like, didn't wanna leave him alone in the house with his mother when he finally split from Detroit. He's also really keen about his daughter, Hailie Jade. He talks about her all the time in his songs and on TV."

I pushed the buttons on the radio. The Steve Miller band was singing, "Time keeps on slipping, slipping into the future." I had a sense of motion. The car was moving forward, and with every traffic light I passed, I was moving farther away from Lisa and our routine evenings at the ByTowne Theatre. The rest of us were going ahead, and Lisa had been left behind. I wanted to go back, not just to last Thursday night, but to my university days, so I could live my life all over again.

I wanted to be sixteen or twenty-six again, making decisions based on what I knew now. So many lost opportunities. How had I managed to completely screw up my life? I'd done everything wrong except that I hadn't become a street prostitute or a serial murderer. Too late for the former—who would want me? But there was still time for the latter.

Oxford, England
May 2014

At the dead of night in the City of Dreaming Spires, on the first day of May, Ava greeted the beginning of spring and eternal evenings in a liberated and bemused fashion. Her exquisite and ethereal cream-colored ball gown swayed as she danced through picturesque cobbled streets, and her eyes twinkled with amusement as she joined thousands of Oxford students in raucous celebrations. This timeless May morning spring festival was no different to the hundreds of years of tradition that came before it. The air was filled with treble notes, as gifted choirboys sang medieval lyrics like Hymnus Eucharisticus from the tallest tower at Magdalen College, overlooking drunken and joyful all-night revelers, as the sun rose on this first morning of May.

Dressed in black tie, Ava’s boyfriend, Jonas von Brauner, shared an old-fashioned bottle of rare French champagne, a party gift they received at the decadent all-night ball that had filled their evening with much enchantment and splendor. As she took the elegant, gold-colored bottle from him, and before she savored the delicate taste of the sublime champagne, Jonas leaned down and planted a luscious kiss on her lips. His kiss always triggered sensations she had never felt before, and when he pulled his mouth away, her joyful eyes devoured him, every inch of his existence.

“Take me home,” he said, as Ava took a sip of the champagne. “You’re incredibly beautiful tonight.” He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against him. Ava smiled up at Jonas as her fingers found their home in his wavy, blonde hair. She pressed her warm, soft lips against his, and he groaned as he slanted his lips over hers and reveled in the sweet taste of her.

Thank you for having me here today.

Today I’d like to share five things people would never guess about me, but that’s a tough one. My life to those people close to me is an open book, but for readers maybe not so much. I’m not going to label myself as a Renaissance Man because that implies a level of understanding that I may not have in most of my interests, but I have a variety of interests and I’m not afraid to try anything at least once. I really love jumping into unknown territory and trying to do something I’ve never done before. Say like Bee Keeping. What a thrill it is when you’re covered with honey bees for the first time or restoring an antique vehicle without ever having any experience, or scuba diving. These and so many other things caught my interest over the years and it’s been a fun ride. One thing that caught my interest and has never waned is writing. This interest is a lifelong love affair.

Most people, even my best of friends, don’t understand how shy I can be when it comes to my creative side. I’ve lectured to a hall of 200+ people without breaking a sweat, but ask me to play the piano, sing, or act in front of five people I get all nervous and break into a very sweaty meltdown almost instantly. Once I was asked to pretend to play the saxophone in a local small theater group and even that was so difficult for me that I had to drop out. I preferred the backstage prep rather than the acting part of theater.

I’m kind of compulsive. I tend to do things too much. Like smoking – three packs a day until I realized that if I kept going I’d never see my kids grow up. Now I’m smoke free and watching my grandkids grow. I was a sugarholic. I had just a little coffee with my sugar every morning, A candy bar every time I left a store that sold them. Snickers was my choice of poison. Then the doc said I’d have to start taking diabetes medication if I didn’t change my ways so I haven’t had any sugar and only a few carbs in four years, but I am medication free. A fair trade.

I like to sew. My dad ran a dry-cleaning and tailoring shop when I was young and when I worked with him he taught me how to sew on one of those old treadle sewing machines. I still sew from time to time if the need presents itself.

Lastly, I’m not very highbrow at all. Most people think because I’m a writer that I’m an intellectual sort of person. Nope not the case. I love people and what makes them tick and that’s why I write. Nothing brainy about caring for people that makes you an intellectual at all. All you need is a little heart.

When US Marshal Jay Stonewalker sees a possible terrorist comment in a chatroom frequented by anti-government radicals suggesting a nuclear threat to New York City, specifically the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, he can’t get it out of his mind. Against his boss’s orders he heads off to NYC to investigate on his own time. While there he follows a suspicious character into a secluded recess of the New York Subway system and foils what he believes is the terrorist event. In a shoot-out with his suspect he’s wounded and calls the NYC PD for backup. When he sees NYPD Detective KC Daviau and other uniformed officers slipping into the darkness from the subway platform he’s relieved, but to his surprise he’s met with resistance and disrespect by Detective Daviau. Against his objections, KC takes custody of the evidence and leaves the scene. When Jay asks an officer if she is always that way he’s told that, “Since her parents died, she’s been… let’s say… a little cold.” When they are assigned to work the case together, KC’s icy exterior soon begins to melt away as they begin to fall for each other, but KC has to hold back. She has a dark secret and knows he can’t ever know her truths because if he did he would hate her just as she hates herself for what she’s about to do.

Because the Waldorf Astoria in New York is their flagship and it’s the symbol of everything that is America. They tried to bring the towers and the World Trade Center down in an unsuccessful attempt in nineteen ninety-three, but managed on September eleventh, two thousand one. What makes you think they won’t try something again? Their hate runs deep.”

“Jay, let it go. Maybe it’s just a disgruntled guest that had a bad experience after spending oodles of money there. Please let it go for your own sanity.” She pleaded and hated herself at the same time. How can I make such beautiful love with this man yet still lie to him? There must be something drastically wrong with me, but it’s too late to turn back now. She knew it wasn’t a terrorist’s threat. It was just her and her merry band of anti-nuclear activists making the world safe. She began to lather up his chest with a loofa body puff and watched as he closed his eyes.

“Just let it go, Jay,” she repeated.

He opened his eyes slowly. “I can’t just let it go. Maybe Gary wasn’t involved with the original chatter I found, but maybe he was. Maybe it’s a whole other source of crazies wanting to take a shot at the Big Apple. Maybe it’s the Russians….” Her heart skipped a beat while she tried to rationalize that Sergei and what Jay was alluding to was just a coincidence. Sergei was fighting the good fight. She was sure of that.

About the Author:
I still live in the community where I met and married my lovely wife, Janice. Actually, she lived around the corner from me and we both ignored each other until our teen years when the hormone thing kicked in and we suddenly realized that the cute little girl skipping rope and that goofy boy riding a bike had both grown up.

We are the proud parents of April and Lindsay; both of whom are now married. April married Darren and they have two beautiful boys, Brian and Owen. Lindsay married Tim and they have two beautiful children: Kailyn and Evan.

I enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping with my family, golfing, making candles, and restoring my antique European sports car, a 1972 MGB.

They say to write from what you know, so I do. I write of love, life and relationships. In addition to the romantic plot we all expect from a Romance novel all of my books deal with a real-world issue as a sub-plot that we all have had to deal in some manner in life, but not in a preachy way. I find that including this sort of theme helps me identify with my characters on a personal level. My hope is that the reader will also feel that connection with my characters.

I have four other published novels. Dead Or A Lie and Saint’s Sword are vampire Romances. Unrequited is a contemporary novel with romantic elements and received 4 stars from Romantic Times Book Review magazine. The Last Prejudice is a family saga that deals with the issues a family must address when a family member comes out.

I have been a member of the RWA and the Central New York Romance Writers since 2004 and have held various posts in my local group. By day I am a construction inspector for an engineering company.

Finding Jackson by Anne Holster

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Thank you for joining us at It's Raining Books! What would we find under your bed?

A big mess! That’s what you’d find under my bed, but, it’s an organized mess – big difference. I have several manila folders containing a myriad of paperwork – some book related and some not - scattered under my bed. Why don’t I get a file cabinet? Good question and maybe some day I will, but for now it works for me!

Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?

When it came time to choose a cover for ‘Finding Jackson’ the one thing I knew for sure is that I wanted it to be both subtle and classy. The book is a love story that revolves around an aspiring musician so I definitely wanted to convey that, hence the couple embracing and the guitar.

I worked closing with my cover artist, Rick Chappell of Chappell Graphix and it took some time, but between the two of us we came up with the concept that was eventually used. I’m thrilled with the way it turned out!

How much of yourself is reflected in this book and how?

That’s a tough question because I don’t feel personality-wise or looks-wise I’m represented in any one character in ‘Finding Jackson’. There is, however, a tiny bit of me that shines through in all of my characters. Whether it be places they’ve been or things that they’ve seen I try to stick with things I know and am familiar with so as to keep it as true to life as possible. I also tend to have a dry sense of humor and that often seeps out in my characters here and there as well.

Where do you get your best ideas?

I get my best ideas from real life. I like to write about real people with real problems and real solutions. If you look around, you’ll see that for yourself in everyday life. Always be an observer!

What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?

Right now I’m working on my fourth novel. Like my other three this one is also a new adult contemporary romance. Where it differs is that it has a bit of a darker feel to it with a main character dealing with an extremely troubled past. Fingers crossed, I’m hoping to have it out by years end!

It's 1977 - Star Wars is breaking records at the box office, Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run tour is taking the country by storm, and born-and-bred Jersey girl Annalise Keller has fallen in love for the first and last time. Hot and charismatic with dreams of making it as a rock star, Keith "Ace" Foxx is everything a teenage girl dreams of. He falls as hard for Anna as she does for him and the two decide to run off to California in search of his big break. Fate has other plans though, and several years and three kids later, Ace has traded in his guitar for a job at the local post office and Anna has become a symbol of all he has given up. Ace spends most nights at the local bar, trying to drink away his anger and resentment.

Flash forward a decade, and their youngest child, Jackson, is headed nowhere fast. In a life filled with meaningless jobs and too much partying, music is his only true escape from the pain of a childhood that abruptly ended one rainy night. The accident had destroyed his family and left him with a slew of unanswered questions.

Everything changes the night Jackson meets Leah. Shy and reserved, she doesn't smoke and barely drinks; she certainly doesn't put out. Not exactly the girl from the Bon Jovi videos he watched as a kid. Yet, before he knows it, she has become his world.

Then, just when it looks like his dreams might come true, betrayal and loss once again threaten everything he holds dear. As Jackson struggles to keep his world from spinning out of control, he knows one thing for sure, the choices he makes now will either be the start of a whole new life, or it just might be the end of him.

Read an Excerpt:

It was hard enough acting like I was fine when I most definitely wasn’t. Inside I was a complete and utter basket-case and I didn’t need anyone else knowing it. I’d deal with it myself – my way – just like I’d done since I was a kid: tuck it away and try to forget.

Of course, forgetting was best achieved with large amounts of alcohol, which was convenient since most of our gigs were at local bars. It never occurred to me that my efforts would only bring everything to a head…and make me cross a line so deep I feared it would be nearly impossible to uncross.

Knowing that she had only one more day to explore that part of the Dreaming, Velvet took advantage and swam out into another new part of the ocean. Here the water was bubbly and warm, a natural hot spring. Velvet relaxed and allowed the bubbles to massage her back and neck.

Domino surprised her by approaching her in a blended form of a water snake and a seahorse. He looked like an extra-long, coiled, seahorse. In the absence of his usual black and white clothing, he colored himself in black and white triangles.

Velvet couldn’t hold her curiosity any longer. “Domino, where do you get your ideas? You always surprise me.”

Domino’s seahorse mouth was able to smile. “They come to me, maybe the same way your ideas come to you? Some pop into my head, already formed. Others I work with until I like what I see. The more outrageous I look, the more comfortable I feel. Creatures stare, but this way I know why.”

Velvet nodded because ideas did come to her in a variety of ways. “Would you like some bubbles?” She graciously offered to move over, even though the spot she was in was prime and she was enjoying it. Domino had sought her out for a reason, and having to cancel their show at Shugey’s might have been hard for him. She reasoned that he would benefit from the bubbles more than she could.
