When his ringing doorbell wakes Devlin from a post birthday party hangover, he finds a beautiful singing telegram dressed as a kitten on the other side, who leaves him intrigued and confused in equal measures. His mysterious songstress has the voice of an angel and the devil’s own temper to match.

Katherine ‘Kat’ Grant has one dream, and that’s singing. To achieve it, she needs admission to the exclusive Perdies College of Music. Kat’s adolescent years were difficult, being dependant on the charity of others left her with a fierce independent streak and a loathing of special treatment. She’ll succeed on her own merits without anyone’s help, especially the cheeky, alluring Devlin who seems to have squeezed himself into every aspect of her life.

Devlin knows he has the power to make all of Kat’s dreams come true. But wielding that power means he could lose her forever.

Can a charismatic cat loving hero and his sassy stubborn singer find their own love song?

Find out, in Purr-fect Pitch.

“I don’t want you falling.”

“You’ve seen me run in heels.”

“Fair point, I—” his voice dropped away.

“Devlin? Devlin? Where’d you go?” Kat felt around beside her in the dark and came up with empty air.

“Ouch, down here. I tripped over the ornamental rockery.”

“What? Are you hurt?” She dropped to her knees, searching for him, her questing hands encountering the fine wool of his trousers. His quick intake of breath was her first clue, even before her fingers brushed against the zipper at his groin. Kat yanked her hand away. Great, now she was groping him.

“Is my chin bleeding?”

“I can’t see. Stay there, let me get my phone.” Kat rummaged through her shoulder bag, and flicked on the phone’s torch app. Light flooded the area, revealing Perdies owner sprawled on the ground, one foot snagged under a large rock.

“I knew that bloody rockery was a bad idea.” He dabbed the grazes on his chin and cheek.

“Here,” she handed him a tissue. “Can you move? Is anything broken?”

“Only my ego.”

All that languid grace and elegance had vanished, lost in an awkward tangle of limbs. Kat bit her lip to fight off a giggle.

“Are you laughing, Katherine?”

“No.” The single, high pitched word would have made a castrato envious.

Everything Changes by Melanie Hansen

Two battle buddies. One fateful deployment. Two vastly different sets of wounds. One friendship changed forever.

A childhood in foster care taught Carey Everett to hold tight to what he has. Enlisting in the Marines gave him purpose, but a life-threatening injury ended his career—and took his leg. Now fully recovered, Carey’s happier than he’s ever been. He has a fulfilling job, a chosen family and, best of all, a cherished friendship with Jase DeSantis, the platoon medic who saved his life.

Despite Jase’s heroism in combat, he’s haunted by his actions overseas. Playing music with his band keeps the demons at bay, but it’s a battle he’s starting to lose.

After a week of sun and fun in San Diego, Jase and Carey’s connection takes an unexpected turn. With change comes a new set of challenges. For Jase, it means letting someone else into his deepest pain. For Carey, it’s realizing love doesn’t always equal loss. In order to make their relationship work, they’ll have to come to terms with their pasts…

…or risk walking away from each other for good.

“Mmm.” Jase wrapped his arms around Carey’s waist, his chin resting on his shoulder. “That was pretty darn good. No. Better than good. Beautiful. Sexy.”

“Ha. I think you have beer goggles on, my friend.”

“You…are…so…” Jase punctuated each word with a brush of his lips to Carey’s cheek, “…beautiful it hurts.” Then he took Carey’s earlobe between his teeth, worrying it lightly. “And you’ve got me twisted in all kinds of knots.”

“You’re not the only one,” Carey rasped. “Knot city, here.”

“Mmm, I can tell.” Jase splayed his palm over Carey’s chest. “Your heart’s beating like a drum.”

Carey couldn’t help the tiny sound of protest that escaped when Jase let go of him, but all he did was grab the audio remote and change the song to a slow, poignant country ballad. Then he held out his hand. “Dance with me?”

Time slowed down as Carey gazed at him, the sands of change shifting precariously beneath his feet. Fear and uncertainty welled up in his throat, but the patient understanding in Jase’s eyes and the steadiness of his hand made Carey reach out and place his fingers in his.

His lips trembling, Carey took a tiny step closer. “I don’t want to lose you,” he whispered.

“Never.”

“I’m a little scared.” He took another step. “A lot scared, actually.”

“I know.”

One more step, until Jase’s chest was just inches from his. Carey sucked in a breath. “Jase, I—”

“Hey. It’s only a dance, okay? Nothing more. Just dance with me.”

She's seen it all, until…Head Games, a Medical Thriller from Eileen Dreyer —St. Louis, Missouri-Present Day—

St. Louis death investigator and trauma nurse Molly Burke has seen just about everything, until gifts begin showing up on her doorstep—gifts like human eyes and painted bones—the signature of a twisted serial killer.

Complicating the dangerous situation, Molly’s 16-year-old nephew unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep, with problems of his own.

Now, Molly must balance the investigation into the mind of a monster, who’s taking her back to the worst years of her life, while launching a rescue mission for her nephew. The question is, will she survive either?

Publisher’s Note: No one writes medical thrillers better than former Trauma Nurse, Eileen Dreyer. This tight medical thriller contains profanity consistent with the salty speech of crime investigators and does NOT contain sexual content.

“A tensely plotted thriller that compels the reader to the last shocking page…Dreyer deftly displays her droll sense of humor while spinning a tale of taut terror…complex, riveting, funny, and compelling.” ~The Denver Post

“Nearly flawless. The dialogue is witty, yet shot through with verisimilitude. The insights into hospitals, medical examiners’ offices, police departments, and the military are stunning.” ~St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Magnum was barking so loudly he was going to wake up the baby at the end of the block. Pointing to her nephew, Molly addressed her friend the cop. "Don't let him out of your sight. I'll be right back."

"But Aunt Molly—"

But Aunt Molly was already stalking through the kitchen, where she could just make out Magnum's massive head outside the door.

He had something. Something he dropped every time he started barking, and then picked up again, like a furry bellboy with room service.

Something white.

That shouldn't have given Molly the creeps. Tonight, it did. It looked like a flower box, the kind long-stemmed roses come in.

Probably something that had been tossed over the fence from the neighboring streets. Molly's yard sided along Euclid, where an eclectic crowd frequented the trendy shops and restaurants tucked all along the Central West End. Since she'd moved home, Molly had found everything from condoms to a full-sized mannequin dressed as Fidel Castro in her backyard.

But the way Magnum played with that box made her think she had more than Castro on her hands.

Pushing the door open, Molly reached out, and Magnum obliged, dropping his prize in her hand. Slick with dog drool and ragged with careful gnaw marks, it was, indeed, a flower box. And it wasn't empty.

"Uh, Dee?" she called, suddenly even more worried about those notes she'd been getting than she had been. "Can you come in here?"

He did, which set Magnum off all over again. Molly shushed the dog and motioned the policeman over as she laid the box on her kitchen table and opened it.

She saw the glint of gold first. Nestled in layers of white tissue. Heavy and solid. But not all gold. Decorated in gold. Painted with gold hearts. Gold hearts and red crosses.

And letters. Words.

"What the hell—" Dee muttered, leaning in for a closer look as Molly pulled the last layer of tissue apart to fully reveal what lay within.

"It's a fake," Molly insisted, even though she knew better.

She didn't touch it, even though she wanted to. She didn't pick it up or tilt it over just to make sure she was right.

She didn't have to, really. After all the time she'd spent in EDs and Medical Examiners' offices, it was virtually impossible for her not to recognize a human thighbone.

A thighbone painted with the salutation "This is for Molly Burke."

Doorway to Scorn by Dimitrius Jones

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dimitrius Jones will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. What was the hardest scene from your book to write?

I think the hardest scene for me to write was one where one of the main characters argues with his family. I wanted to scream at him to stop being so childish, but he was doing what teens do. They argue and view the world as black and white. They haven’t learned to recognize gray yet.

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

I’ve been reading fantasy since I was a small child. I’ve always been entranced with the wonder of visiting new and exciting worlds full of magic.

I’ve always wanted to tell a story of some kind, and I always wanted to tell my stories in my own worlds filled with their own unique characters, laws, and histories. So, becoming a fantasy writer was always the most logical step.

If you write in more than one genre, how do you balance them?

I think I’m lucky because my other genre is self-help. I say that because the skills I use to practice self-care fuel my creativity for both genres. As for balance, both sides tend to be pretty even at any given moment. Both genres bring me immense joy, so I rarely ever feel like there’s any competition between the two.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I enjoyed getting to build this world so much! There are so many things you haven’t learned yet about Austyria that are waiting to be uncovered.

From the legends, the myths, to the different races, there was so much excitement in putting it all together. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

What book that you have read has most influenced your life?

My music history textbook from college. I’ve always had a deep love and passion for music, but learning about its origins was mind-blowing.

It had a tremendous influence on me because I was able to read about some of my favorite composers, the struggles and creative setbacks they endured, how everything evolved over time, and how music encompasses so many different aspects of our lives that we don’t think about. It was the dose of perspective I didn’t know I needed.

Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

Something many people don’t know is I’ve worked with children for 10 years. I believe I officially retired about 2 years ago. Working with children and getting to shape the future a little was a fantastic ride.

Children are amazing individuals, and through them I gained the most valuable skillset of all time: patience.

Can you tell us something about your book that is not in the summary?

If you love JRPGs, you’ll love this book!

Many in the world of Austyria dream of becoming heroes, gaining classes like Mage, Knight, and Beastmaster. With the power granted to them by the powerful Alrelics, they can level up and accomplish extraordinary feats.

The citizens of Hollo village long for a hero to save them from the malevolent Gate, which disfigures all who see or try to enter it. Lex dreams of becoming a Soldier and leaving his cursed village with his friends, Bibi and Ariel, but his class designation ceremony devolves into absolute disaster. Within days, he’s forced to embark on a journey that will change his destiny forever.

To save his friends, Lex must uncover the mysteries of this mysterious doorway, while keeping his scornful heart in check before it consumes him utterly.

“Lex. You need to run.”

Bibi’s voice is low, just above a whisper. She flips her daggers in her hands until they’re pointing away from her body, something I’ve never seen done before. They’re normally used for stabbing – usually in the most treacherous manner possible – and held with the blade facing up, not down.

“I’m not leaving you here to fight that alone.”

“Then you’re a fool. You can’t help me here, and that cursed weapon you have won’t save you. I don’t even know why you’re still holding onto it.”

“I have potions. If you get hurt, I can at least heal you.”

Bibi doesn’t respond, but I can see the muscles in her shoulders and arms tensing as the shadow man regains his composure and goes completely still. She doesn’t sound like herself. It’s as if she’s a completely different person.

The shadow man points his blade high into the sky, and a strange, smoke-like energy begins to wisp around him. Soon, he is joined by two identical shadow men, each taking a battle stance with swords of their own.

“This is not a fight I plan to win,” Bibi says, and that’s when it dawns on me. She’s trying to buy everyone else time to escape from these things.

As he enters Club Kink, he's inexplicably drawn to a newly released sub with an intriguing proposition and the most captivating amber eyes. But she has disturbing baggage and her expectations prove quite a challenge, one that would necessitate a commitment he's not ready for.

Rielle Reid needs a Dom while she waits for her former Master to return. When she invites a handsome stranger to her home dungeon for a night of play, she's surprised at his gentle dominance—and her response to it. But in the light of day, his demand for equal footing confounds her. After living four years as a twenty-four/seven slave, she has no concept of how to be anything other than property.

Gage must find a way to master Rielle to free them both from the shackles of the past.

“I want to be available to dedicate myself to my Master.”

“Your Master released you. Or…” Was she…? “Are you looking for a new Master?”

Her mouth opened, but no sound escaped. She made a second attempt with the same result. Finally she simply said, “I want my Master back.”

Like I want my Cara back.

“Rielle, you realize that’s probably not going to happen. If he’s gone vanilla by choice…”

“In his heart, though, he’s a Master. It was his destiny, as it was mine to be a slave.”

The word gave him shivers. He’d never met someone involved in a complete and total power exchange, and he was intimidated. What would it be like to be totally responsible for someone else? “Why did you go to Club Kink last night?”

Her eyes misted. “He used to take me there. He always wore a mask, but he liked the thrill of going out in public with the possibility of discovery. When we scened there, it was intense, and when we came home, it was explosive. Those are the times I remember most vividly.”

“What about those private moments when it was the two of you? Those moments of shared intimacy?”

Her gaze sharpened. “The intimacy came from me serving him, not shared memories.” She scowled. “You don’t know what it’s like.”

“To be so involved with someone you lose who you are? No, I don’t know what that’s like. I know what love is, but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you had, and I’m sorry for you.”

“Love leads to losing control. I might’ve been the slave, but at least I chose to be that way.”

He didn’t understand, and maybe he never would. “I should be going.”

She looked neither surprised nor disappointed.

The Blood Prophecy: The Queen's Ascension by Barb Jones

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Barb Jones will be awarding a $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I love anything supernatural/horror related. I grew up loving stories about witches, vampires, werewolves, you name it. I think the part that draws me to it is the fact that these characters are immortal, strong, full of life, for example. I mean, think about. Vampires can experience immortality and see the world change.

What research is required?

For my series, a lot of research in history is required. Because I tell the prophecy from several different points in time, I must really research the characters that I bring to life. For example, I researched a lot of Alexander the Great, Aristotle, Mozart, just to name a few. I research not only the well-known aspects of their importance in history but I learn about their lives on a more personal level. In addition to that, I research the places in which I think would be fitting for the paranormal and some other characters. I have gypsies in the books and I had to research the geographical areas in which they came from.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

The one thing (of many) that I can say I learned from Amber is really the value of family and honor. But because she was adopted, she had to learn to love a new family and that really put things in perspective for me for the adopted children.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Writing Quirks! I have many! Probably one that stands out is that I will write anywhere, especially when something comes to mind. I have even written a whole chapter while on a date! Luckily, he was a great guy and so understanding, that we both had a chuckle on it. And even today, he is one of my best friends.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am a pantser. I can’t plan out my books. I am always rewriting the endings to find the perfect one for the characters and for me.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

My daughter’s painting. Arianna has a natural artistic skill that amazes everyone because she did this as a young teenager (age 14). And now, she is 19 and in college. This is one of my favorite paintings that she has done. I even attached it here in this for everyone to see.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Well as soon as things regarding travel are safe again, I have an upcoming trip to Scotland that I am taking to study the history there. Consider it part of the research for the books and possibly another series.

Do you have a question for our readers?

I wouldn’t say it’s a question but more of a thank you! While people think its easy to pick a book you want to read, it’s always a challenge to create that world you will fall in love with as you read that book. So, thank you for reading and allowing us authors to create worlds for you to enjoy. I hope by learning a little about me, you might pick up a book in the series and become a fan. So, thank you!

When the darkness was compelling and the heart knew no bounds, was there really a right choice? With Michael's life hanging in the balance, Amber had a choice: save her star-fated love or keep on the crusade to unite the magical community. For Amber, her fate was sealed even before her birth and it was her destiny to fight the great battle ahead of her. But, when it came to her heart — her friends, her great love — Amber's torn. Not only was she the Queen, but she was a human in every sense of the word. She was vulnerable. And so the very people — Chloe and Michael — that gave her strength, quickly became her weakness. It wasn't her fault she loved too much, was it?

Nevertheless, the Tall Dark Man had set a plan in motion that could threaten the very existence of the Blood Prophecy. Would he gather his dark forces and succeed in destroying Amber once and for all? Or, would she assemble her powerful friends and save the world?

One night when he was making his rounds in the forest to see if he could find any scraps tourists left behind when camping, he heard a soft whisper.

“Briar….”

He stilled at the sound of his name, and turned around to see no one or nothing in sight.

He was alone.

In the dark.

So, he crouched down and continued to shine the flashlight.

“…Hexham.”

He stopped once more and looked over his shoulder. His forehead crinkled with lines of confusion. “Hexham? Who the hell is Hexham?” His voice was thick with an English accent.

The bodiless voice laughed, and the closer he listened, the more definite the voice became. A woman’s voice spoke to him loud and clear, as if she were standing right in front having a conversation with him.

Briar’s voice quivered, partly from fear and partly from fascination. “Who are you? Where are you?” He shined the flashlight but saw nothing. Complete darkness and trees, that was it.

The woman’s voice laughed mockingly in return. “Who I am is not important—for now. But I am everywhere and nowhere, all the same.”

As the voice spoke, Briar felt a sense of ease overwhelm his body. The fear and anxiety dissipated. For the first time in his life, he felt like he belonged, truly and deeply, just by the sound of her voice.

“You do belong. We are family, a family of witches. The most powerful to have walked the earth. We lost you, but now you are found.”

He looked out to no one in particular, but his shock was evident. “Witches? That’s ludicrous.”

About the Author:
I was born in Hawaii, a place rich with culture and storytellers. As a little girl, scary tales about vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and witches were my favorite kind — much to my mother's dismay.

The scarier, the better.

My love for the supernatural never went away, even after moving to Seattle, far from Hawaii's majestic beaches with unusual colors. Nothing compares to the landscapes of Maui, Lanai, or Oahu. But somehow, Seattle stole my heart anyway. It became the place where my love for stories took on a new form, in a book of my own: The Adventures of Little Arthur and Merlin the Magnificent. This book is for kids who love stories, just like I did.

Then I had an idea while sleeping.

One night, my mind began to work overtime. In a dream, I saw a unique storyline involving all the races and an epic battle of good versus evil. It was a modern day plot with a three thousand year old prophecy, The Blood Prophecy. I finished the first book in 2014, The Queen's Destiny. Two years later, I released The Queen's Enemy. The last book in the series, The Queen's Ascension, released on August 17, 2020.

Today, I live in Florida with its beaches and sunshine. But I'm still a Seattle girl at heart. And so all my stories take place in the Northwest.

I always keep to my roots when I write.

Thanks for joining us at It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write LGBTQ+ fiction, but it is based squarely in reality. It is what I know, it is the life that I lead. My trilogy called Road Without End is a slice of Canadian Queer history beginning in the spring of 1979 with Gay Liberation and Disco music, and ending with the city of Vancouver hosting the International Gay Olympic Games in 1990. It travels from the nightlife of 1970s Toronto, to gay life in Calgary in the early 1980s, and finally to the bars, bath houses and nude beaches of Vancouver as the 1990s begin.

If we don’t witness our own history, and put pen to paper for future generations, it will be lost for good. And, I think the fact that we lost almost an entire generation of gay men to AIDS, is the main thing that compels me to write in the genre, especially about this time, and particularly from a Canadian point of view. I think of all the young men that were lost, and all of the stories that will never be told. That’s what draws me to do this.

What research is required?

The challenge for me is conducting research on life in the real world. What is life like in some towns, cities and areas of the country that I’ve never previously been to? What is the landscape around the area like? What does the city or town look like? What is the mind-set of the people in the area? What is it like to experience being in the Canadian Armed Forces at a time when such a thing as being gay got you discharged, or court martialed? What is it like to find yourself in a situation where spending time in jail is a reality?

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

You can plan to the final detail, but sometime there’s an unknown factor that can hit you broadside and derails all of your plans. For example, in my novel Just Outside of Hope, the character Bert decides to go out to the pub for a quiet drink one night, and through no fault of his own, finds himself in police custody facing jail time. Life can be like that sometimes.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

None that I can think of. Although I do enjoy writing first thing in the morning because that is when I’m feeling the most energetic and the most creative.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Both. When I begin to write a book, or a chapter, I have a general idea of the direction in which I would like to see the action go. But I have learned over the years to be general when I plan these things. The reason being, the characters in my story tend to take over the plot at some point and then, it’s their actions that determine the direction plot will go. I’m always excited when that happens because then I don’t know what will happen next, and that’s when writing becomes an adventure.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

An end table and an antique ash tray stand.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m finishing my last novel in the Road Without End Trilogy called, Last Chance Town. I’m hoping it will be published this fall and available for Christmas. I will also be editing a second anthology of Queer Elders sharing their stories with the focus being on Queer Elders of Colour and Trans Elders. So, you can look forward to that possibly in the spring.

Just Outside of Hope, the sequel to Road Without End, moves through the early years of the 1980s. It takes us from the Canadian Prairies to the pubs, bath houses and nude beaches of Vancouver, British Columbia.

It is now September 1980 and ex-Lieutenant Jim Whitelaw is dealing with the guilt he feels from the fall out of a military tribunal, and lingering family issues which make things worse. But just as he feels he's getting his life together, cracks appear once more and he has to make some serious decisions.

Meanwhile, in a matter of a moment, Jim's friend and sometimes lover Bert Gilhuis, finds himself trapped in a serious situation that eventually sees him set off on new adventures in Vancouver.

These are two more stories in the continuing series of the lives of gay men who lived through the most exhilarating and terrifying of times.

Bert stares silently down at the table. This moment of silence seems like forever.

“I’m going to miss the hell out of you, Jim. It’s too bad you’re leaving. We could have had something really good together.”

Then he takes a deep breath. “What does it matter though? I’m probably going off to jail for the next little while, and even if you stayed here, I probably wouldn’t be seeing much of you for God-knows-how-long anyway.”

We’re silent again.

“I think it’s good that you’re going back to help your family in their time of need,” he says. “I really hope your father will be okay, somehow, and I really hope that someday you can come back to Calgary.”

I smile at him and nod.

One of the guards knocks then opens the door. “Five minutes to count Gilhuis!” Then he shuts the door and goes back behind the counter.

“Count?” I ask, “What’s that?”

Bert looks at me sadly. “That means I have to go. They stick us back in our cells just to make sure we’re all still here,” he says with a sigh. “They do this to us about three or four times a day.”

We’re momentarily silent again.

“Bert, I won’t forget you.”

“Jim, I sure as hell will never forget you. Promise that you’ll write to me?”

I smile sadly and tell him I will. I slowly get up from the table. I look into Bert’s eyes wanting to say something, anything that won’t sound trite or superficial. But what do I say at a moment like this? I want to kiss him, to hug him, but I don’t dare, not in here.

It’s as Bert is reading my thoughts. “You don’t have to say anything, Jim. Just go. You have a life to live.”

I bow my head and leave the room. I open the door I look back to Bert. He has a sad but stoic look in his eyes.

“Goodbye, Jim.”

My voice cracks as I say, “Goodbye, Bert.”

I turn and walk through the door.

I feel overwhelming sadness. It’s strange where time brings everybody. I think of my life and twists and turns it’s taken over this past year and a half. I think of Bert, my father, Glenn, Bryn and Marcel, the military and the tribunal. I think of Cliff who has made a special trip out from Manitoba and is at my place packing some boxes for me. I think of how every change in my life seems to be more dramatic and comes at me more quickly. Somehow though, I seem to muddle through those changes and manage to carry on. I don’t know what these next years are going to bring, but I can tell you this much, I’ll conquer every single one of them. This I promise myself.

They Called Me 33 by Karen Chaboyer

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Karen Chaboyer will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Karen longed for acceptance, validation and love, but had no ability to form healthy, meaningful relationships. Born into a large family already suffering the effects of two generations of residential school, and surviving her own nine years at St. Margaret Indian Residential School, Karen (like everyone she knew) had been systematically stripped of her dignity, identity, language, culture, family and community support systems.

Not wanting to be alone as an adult, Karen tolerated unhealthy relationships with family and partners. Still, she was coping. But after suffering further trauma, Karen turned to alcohol and other addictions to numb her pain.

Eventually, Karen found the strength to reach out for help. She learned to grieve through layers of shame and was finally able to embrace her identity. Karen also discovered what has long been known in her culture – the healing power of sharing your story. Karen would now like to share this book, her story, with you.

My Childhood

It was a hot sunny day; a soothing breeze was flowing off the lake through the open screened windows. My mother and I were both lying sideways across a double bed, next to the open window, enjoying the afternoon together. I was on my stomach, legs in the air, as my eyes followed a bee buzzing around outside the screen window. My mother was lying on her side, legs dangling off the bed. She was a hard-working woman, young in spirit, all the while loving her family. There was no rest, having twelve children to tend to, but that afternoon she was taking a break with me anyway. Out of the blue, I asked, “Mom, what was it like when you gave birth to me?”

Mom looked out the window, reminiscing on the day she gave birth to me. Her face brightened as she began to tell her story. She said she went into labour the wee hours of the morning, and as the sun began to appear across the horizon, she prepared for her journey into town, packing a suitcase with her belongings and some baby clothes. My mother prayed that she would make it to the hospital on time. She had plenty of experience giving birth.

Dad took the suitcase down to the boat. There, he carefully prepared our big ole fishing boat for the trip by making sure there was plenty of gas and by laying blankets on the floor of the boat, so Mom could lie down as she bore each contraction. As my mother wobbled down the hill toward my dad, he grabbed her hand and helped her into the boat. He made sure she was comfortable on the blankets before starting their journey. Like all dad’s, he was nervous. He remained silent and hoped they would make it into town on time. The two-hour ride seemed like eternity.

The water was calm and serene and looked like a glass mirror. There was no breeze, and all you could hear was the motor putting slowly across the lake. Occasionally, my mother moaned in pain as she would breathe into each contraction. While gasping, Mom saw a stork flying across the lake as they approached our Couchiching First Nation reserve. Immediately, upon seeing the stork, Mom had suspicious thoughts that her baby might be taken away. She prayed that she would make it to the hospital safely and that I would be healthy.

As my parents approached land, houses appeared on the lakeshore, and she knew that things would be fine. As Dad docked the boat, he climbed out of the boat and opened his hands to help Mom out of the boat. Once he had the boat docked and Mom was safely on land with her personal belongings, he ran to the nearest house to call a taxi. The trip to the hospital was only a ten-minute drive, but they had railway tracks to cross. If the tracks were blocked by a train it would prevent them from getting into town.

God answered their prayers, and everything turned out fine. Mom explained that I was a dry birth because her water broke several hours before I was born. Despite it all, Mom and Dad became proud parents once again. I was now the tenth child and second girl in the family. It was mandatory that we stayed in the hospital for the next ten days as my mother recuperated and regained her strength. When we checked out, I had a good bill of health.

“Please,” I scoffed. “People watch you all the time. You must know that. You’re this presence that people like watching. I don’t know. You’re fascinating.” He blinked slowly a couple times, making me feel all sorts of nervous. “Nevermind.”

“No, finish your thought. I’m curious.” He nudged me with his leg and raised his dark brows.

“Fishing for compliments, Brock?” I teased, but stopped when his expression turned serious. My stomach soured, empathy taking over. This was a guy who thought very low of himself since the accident. As tough and intelligent as he was, he was a little broken inside. “You handsome, silly man.”

One side of his lip curled up, but those dark blues eyes waited for me to continue. I put my small hand on his arm this time, squeezing him. “No one watches you with pity, Brock. If that’s what you’re thinking. They watch you with awe and pride. Here you are, in the prime of most men’s athletic years working your ass off for a sport you were forced to give up. You’re amazing, really. You’re intelligent, everyone who works around you admires the hell out of you, and you refused to let life get the best of you. You help the dumbasses like Q and Chip, make sure your staff is treated fairly, and you helped me with this project which you had no obligation to do. You’re a good guy, Brock. Sometimes, I think you forget that.”

My heart pounded as his face fell slightly, his lips pressing together so hard they turned white. His eyes shattered me and I panicked, needing to ease the tension. I patted his knee with a shaking hand. “Although, you can be a bit grumpy.”

Nick Bancroft Mystery Series by Bob Liter

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

IN THIS "GRIPPING" MYSTERY THRILLER SOMEONE TRIES TO BURN NICK BANCROFT ALIVE, BEATS HIM SENSELESS, USES HIM FOR TARGET PRACTICE AND WORST OF ALL HIS BELOVED CHICAGO CUBS DISAPPOINT HIM AGAIN! SOMETIMES A PI JUST CAN'T CATCH A BREAK! BUT WHEN HIS CLIENT IS A SEXY NUDIST, NICK BANCROFT WILL PUT UP WITH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!

When a sexy nudist hires him to protect her from whoever is threatening her life, Nick Bancroft becomes the target. Someone tries to burn him alive, beats the hell out of him and, since that didn't run him off, uses him for target practice. Meanwhile, two people are murdered, Nick's true love, Maggie Atley, is more than somewhat perturbed by his relationship with his client, and a mysterious club seems to hold the answer. Nick survives an exciting but still losing season by his beloved Chicago Cubs, a vicious attack by a couple of huge dogs and eventually puts the finger on the bad guys.

Nick Bancroft Mysteries, written by Bob Liter

I'm an ex-newspaper reporter who inherited a run-down, one-man detective agency. My name is Nick Bancroft. I used to do investigation work occasionally for a friend Jimmy Jackson, who left me the business and stuck me with an office on the top floor of an old building in the wrong end of town.

I would have refused the inheritance, but I was sick of working where news had been converted to entertainment. And, besides, Jimmy had paid six months’ rent in advance for the office with a small apartment attached. Since I inherited the business I have helped solve a murder and got some press as a result.

In a small town like Centrel City, you can find bribery, graft, kickbacks, political influence peddling, criminal cover-ups, and sometimes murder. Now when I get involved in a case, there usually is a story I can sell to the upstate Chicago Times. I didn't expect to make a living as a private investigator and freelance reporter, but I was wrong ... sort of. It beats making money for someone else and it leaves time for my almost favorite sport of bowling and my passion for the Chicago Cubs.

It’s all in a day’s work; I can be tough enough when I have to be. On the other hand, I can be soft for the ladies, especially for an on-again off-again lover, Maggie Atley. Nothing is ever as it seems and I don’t quit until I find the answers. My name is Nick Bancroft.

Murder by the Book, written by Bob Liter

Nick Bancroft inherits a rundown detective agency and embarks on a new career as a hard-boiled detective. When date rape drugs show up in Centrel City, so does reporter Nick Bancroft. The drugs are discovered at two different murders with sex etiquette books left at the scenes. Nick is hired by the first victim’s father, Ramsey Sinclair, to find the killer. A Chicago detective, Miss Faustine, is also hired by Mr. Sinclair to work “closely” with Bancroft. His focus is interrupted when he begins a love affair with receptionist, Maggie Atley, from a neighboring office.

Bancroft is banking on solving the murders and selling the story to the Chicago Times. As the case unfolds there is enough danger, drama, and deception to fill a book. Nick finds few things are as they seem and in his enthusiasm he becomes the target of a shooter and also the target of charming Maggie Atley’s affections.

August is Murder, written by Bob Liter

A sexy nudist hires Nick Bancroft to defend her from threats on her life; Nick volunteers to provide 24-hour protection. Now, he is the target and August becomes even hotter when someone tries to burn him alive. Nick is not one to turn tail and run, especially now with two murders and Lady Godiva to protect. Nick's true love, second only to the Cubs and bowling, Maggie Atley, is more than somewhat perturbed by the arrangement with his beautiful client.

After weeks of investigation there are still unanswered questions. Who are the bad guys? What does a mysterious club have to do with the murders? Can Nick survive another losing season by his beloved Chicago Cubs? Is this the last inning for Nick and Maggie?

Death Sting, written by Bob Liter

After an intimate breakfast together, while reading the paper to Maggie, Nick is baffled by a headline: Female Body Found Covered with Stings: The Sheriff Calls the Death an Accident. Free-lance reporter and private detective, Nick Bancroft, doesn’t believe it and is drawn to the case like a bee to honey. He learns the victim lived in a home for young unwed mothers who work as waitresses and hookers at a nightclub.

Murder suspects include an alcoholic handy man, the man and wife who operate the home, a nightclub operator and his henchman, and a sheriff's deputy. Everyone is trying to stop Nick’s investigation, including federal agents.

Even when he and his earthy lover Maggie survive being dumped in a deep lake with weights tied to their ankles, Bancroft is unwavering in his pursuit of the truth. Will Maggie and Nick’s romance sink or swim before the case is solved?

Point of Murder, written by Bob Liter

Nick Bancroft, a former investigative reporter, enjoys a mundane existence in Centrel City operating a one-man detective agency. He supplements his pauper’s wages selling news stories to the Chicago Times. In a small apartment, Nick and his roommate Maggie, share frivolous romantic lovemaking and the responsibility of feeding a stray cat that adopted them. On the surface it seems picture-perfect.

The bed of roses ends abruptly when Nick’s destitute young friend, Bobby Scalf, is found murdered with a blunt six inch spike in his head. Nick becomes a suspect when the second murder victim is discovered in the abandoned building where the boy lived.

While Nick tries to find out who killed the boy, he uncovers a web of corruption involving the town council, the school board, the police chief and the local newspaper publisher. Nick survives several attempts on his life, and that of his stormy lover, before nailing the killer and exposing the town's secrets. Solving the town’s problems may not be enough to solve the problems festering between Maggie and Nick. Is it really over?

And the Band Played On, written by Bob Liter

Freelance reporter and sometime private detective, Nick Bancroft, is tough enough when he has to be. On the other hand, he can be soft for the ladies. That's how he ends up at an outdoor band concert, with Maggie, a librarian, divorcee, and his very talented lover. Nick is front row center to witness the murder of a well-connected private secretary of an important political figure.

It doesn't earn him any points with the cops that he is on the scene before them, and it doesn't earn him any points with certain influential politicians that he won't get off the case. Not only is Nick drawn into the dirty details of the crime, someone is trying to kill him. During the investigation, Maggie and Nick come face to face with the events surrounding 9-11. Will the final case break their spirits and crumble their love, or will they emerge stronger and committed to life together?

A whip-crack sound bit into the air. A scream followed. The director's baton remained frozen in space. An instant of silence was shattered by, "Somebody help. She's bleeding. I think she's been shot."

The screamer stood in the third row to our left on the far side of the amphitheater. I dodged benches and people and raced to the scene. I put my hands on the screamer's shoulders and assured her it would be all right to rest her lungs. She collapsed and edged away from the body of a young woman sprawled on the bench. Blood dripped from the young woman's forehead.

I pressed a finger into her neck. No pulse. She was dead.

"Who is she? Is she really dead? Did anyone call the police?"

I stood on the bench beside the body, ignored the questions, and announced in my best imitation of authority, "Stay back. Don't disturb the scene."

Big Ed, breathing deeply, the cigar clamped at the edge of his mouth, said, "Who put you in charge, Bancroft?"

"Nobody's in charge until the police get here. I'm just trying to preserve the integrity of the scene."

A police siren grew louder and groaned to silence while the patrol car skidded to a stop on the edge of the parking lot. Two cops trotted down into the crowd and muscled their way to the death scene. One of them, Thomas something, a young guy with a square jaw, a big nose and brown eyes, said, "What's going on Mister Bancroft? The caller said someone was shot. We were just a block away."

It is my honor to introduce new readers to the Bancroft Mysteries where the character Nick Bancroft has an uncanny resemblance to my Dad, Bob Liter with his wit and bodacious gutsy approach to life. Then there is Nick’s on-again off-again lady, Maggie Atley, who is just like Mom, Lillian Liter, in the way she deals with a self-proclaimed “male chauvinist piggy.”

While Nick solves mysteries in the fictitious, but very real, community of Central City, IL he still finds time for his love-hate relationship with bowling, and his avid undying passion for the Chicago Cubs and Bears.

What I Would Tell a Newbie Author…

I would not presume to say that I have all the answers. In fact, I am still fairly new to the whole writing game, relatively speaking. But I don’t want to be guilty of not passing along whatever knowledge I gain along the way. So, this is my “Letter to the Aspiring Author.”

I want to share what information I have gleaned while it is fresh in my mind. I am about five years (having signed my first contract in 2015) and 13 novels in. And, as I mentioned, I think it’s important for us to share our experiences and “leave the porch light on”, so to speak. This way, those coming behind us can find their way along the path.

When I was a newbie, I wondered often about what I needed to do next, what I needed in my arsenal, and what my day should look like. I will try to help out with these (and other) questions as much as I can...

WRITE THE BOOK. First, delve into writing the best book you can. Every aspiring author is such because there is a story within, trying to get out. Inspiration has struck! Get it out on paper. Do what is needed to write the best book. This may involve learning how to write. Well how do I learn how to write?

READ BOOKS ABOUT THE CRAFT OF WRITING. Anything by James Scott Bell, Susan May Warren, or Brandilyn Collins are my favorites. Some of the best reference books I’ve found on craft include The Emotion Thesaurus, Rivet Your Readers With Deep Point of View, Super Structure, Getting Into Character, and The Story Equation. There are tons of books out there on the craft of writing. You just have to get started somewhere.

GO TO CONFERENCES. I cannot say enough about the difference investing in conferences has made for my writing. Learning from experts (in writing, publishing, editing, and marketing), networking with other writers, having the chance to learn firsthand by pitching your work to an agent or acquisition editor...these are just a few of the gems that come from going to a good conference. There is probably a conference near you (it may be small, but I recommend starting small). And there are larger conferences in different genres. Bob Mayer has a book titled Writer's Conference Guide: Making the Most of Your Time and Money. I highly recommend it for first timers.

FIND A CRITIQUE GROUP. If you can, join a writing critique group, even if it's online. Find a good one. What I mean is that there should be at least one person in the group that is published. Or you may end up in a situation where the blind is leading the blind. Also, some groups can end up tearing down the more talented writers...that's not what you want. So be on the lookout for that. A good critique group is going to give you feedback, but give it constructively.

MENTOR. As you continue on your journey, see if you can find a mentor. Maybe it will be someone in your critique group who is farther along in their career, maybe it's someone you come across at a conference. But a mentor is an invaluable resource.

WRITE THE BOOK. Are you still writing that book? Cause that's what it's all about. You have to have the book. It's all about the book.

LEARN ABOUT QUERYING. The query is the email or letter you send out to entice someone about your book. To try to “sell” your book, if you will. There is a bit of an art and a science to writing queries.

“Query Shark” has a blog on blogspot. She is a literary agent and is an amazing resource on how to write a query. When you do start querying, please be mindful to research the agent or publisher you wish to submit to, they each have their own submission guidelines. Some will want a cover letter, some won't. Some want a formal book proposal, some want just sample chapters. Just be mindful and follow their guidelines to the letter.

BUILD A WEBSITE. You need to start building a PLATFORM. I know that sounds like a big, scary word. But, if you plan on marketing (another scary word) your book, you need to have your own website. Instead of delving into everything that makes up a platform, I'll just focus on why you should set up a website. You want a place where your readers/fans can come and visit you. You do not own Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Those platforms can change their rules tomorrow. And their algorithms are constantly changing. Don’t rely on these social media outlets to be your only Internet presence. Set up your own website at the very least. This is one of the best pieces of advice I can give you about platform. Oh, and start collecting email addresses (with permission) to start a newsletter.

WRITE THE BOOK.In the end, it's still about the book. These other things are ways to enhance your experience as a writer. But, you cannot forget that it is about your idea, your story, and your novel. Never lose sight of that. And there will be days when you don't feel like spending time with your book—editing, revising, or writing. But it is important to spend that time creating. Just try to sit down and make yourself start working. Once the pump is primed, the juices just might start flowing. You won't know until you try.

A woman’s choice…is in question.

Brianne is a somewhat naïve college freshman. She becomes disillusioned as her professors and peers challenge many of her long-held beliefs. When she finds a diary that belonged to a distant relative, she hopes it will offer much needed distraction. And she is soon drawn into the story of a passionate woman who seems to whisper from the past.

In 1915’s New York, idealist and primary teacher Margaret struggles with the problems women face at home and in society. She is first timid about speaking her mind, but in time cannot keep her impassioned spirit hidden—not even from the gentleman who teaches in the classroom next door. His concern for her stretches the limits of their friendship, pressing into something more. Caught up in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, she faces down authority figures and others who question her beliefs.

And so, Brianne is whisked along on this journey as Margaret joins the fight for women’s rights, all the while trying to work through her own questions and experiences with modern feminism.

Before long, things spin out of control and she wonders where her newfound relationship fits into everything? Are there any clear answers? Will she land on her feet? Or be forever lost to herself?

CONTEMPORARY TIME PERIOD – Brianne goes to hear a Speaker from NOW (National Organization for Women)

“Ask yourself,” the woman continued, now staring at Brianne.

Heat crept into her cheeks.

“What am I worth? Where does my value lie? What can I take hold of and rely on in this life?”

Ms. Mason scanned the room, and Brianne shivered.

As much as she’d like to dismiss all of this as nonsense, the woman’s questions would not quiet. Where was her worth?

Wasn’t it in Christ? That felt rather abstract. Could that be a foundation?

Her parents believed she was special, but they wouldn’t always be there.

Scott seemed to think her worth his time and attention. Should she rely on a man to give her value? That made her uneasy.

Where did she belong? On what truth might she base her life? Her value?

She rolled the question in her mind. Stymied.

Thunderous applause broke out around her; several of the students and faculty around her rose.

Brianne clapped and stood. Except… she didn’t know what to think about the speech. Still, it was the polite thing to do. Wasn’t it?

The applause quieted, and the crowd started moving, some toward the exit, some toward the speaker.

Brianne gathered her notebook and pen, bending to grab her bag.

“I’m going to ask her some questions,” Daria said, leaning over her.

Brianne shot up and looked at the front of the room. A small crowd surrounded Ms. Mason. “Sure.”

Daria gripped at her elbow. “Come on.”

Did she wish to face down Ms. Mason? The thought made her stomach do a little flip. She met Daria’s eyes. “I think I’ll head back to the dorm. I’ve got that Chemistry homework to finish.” And I want some time to think. Alone.

About the Author:
Sara is a coffee lovin', word slinging, Historical Romance author whose super power is converting caffeine into novels. She loves those odd little tidbits of history that are stranger than fiction. That's what inspires her. Well, that and a good love story.

But of all the love stories she knows, hers is her favorite. She lives happily with her own Prince Charming and their gaggle of minions. Three to be exact. They sure know how to distract a writer! But, alas, the stories must be written, even if it must happen in the wee hours of the morning.

Sara is an avid reader and enjoys reading and writing clean Historical Romance when she’s not traveling. Her books range from the Czech lands to the American wild west and from ancient Egypt to the early 1900s. Some of her titles include The Lady Bornekova, Hope in Cripple Creek, The General’s Wife, Trail of Fears, and the Convenient Risk Series.
