Enjoy an except:

Blue barked and I knew the man was still alive and coming my way. My eyes were stinging from the smoke and the sweat. My thighs burned from crouching and my right arm throbbed from its wounds. I thought I heard him moving away from me. Maybe he was just trying to escape. It was possible the man didn't want to face me. I stayed still, waiting to see him. Then I heard Blue growl, a body hit the ground. A gun went off. I was flying toward the sound. My fear for Blue stronger than any other instinct.

There was movement in the grasses ahead and I was suddenly upon them. Blue had the man's arm in his mouth. The gun pointed in my direction. The man was wailing at Blue's body with his free fist, grunting with the effort. The man spotted me and was about to pull the trigger when I brought my machete down onto his wrist, almost severing his hand. Blood spurted out of the wound and I felt it land, warm and wet, on my hands and forearms. Droplets splattered my cheeks and forehead. He screamed, piercing and hardly human.

Blue held onto his forearm as the man struggled. His face was growing paler. His blood soaked into the dust. I walked up to the man and aimed my gun at his forehead. He went to speak but I pulled the trigger. The bang was loud. His eyes were open, the wound between them oozing blood slower than the severed hand.

More about UNLEASHED:

UNLEASHED is the first book in Emily Kimelman's best selling Sydney Rye series of mysteries.

When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

The Sydney Rye Series by Emily Kimelman -- Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Emily will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to one randomly drawn commenter. The other stops can be found by clicking the tour banner.

How to handle negative criticism

Negative criticism, no matter the source, is going to at least sting, and at worst, send you into a tail spin of regret, depression, and self-doubt. Despite the pain though, negative criticism can be very helpful. I have several beta readers that go over my Sydney Rye novels before publication and they are tough on my manuscripts. But that’s really important. Figuring out what is wrong with your story is awesome, because then you can make it better.

While criticism from trusted sources can be eye opening, low star reviews on amazon by readers I’ve never met and whose taste I don’t know anything about are only useful as a way to justify eating ice cream while sorrowfully watching “The Vampire Diaries”. Now, I’ll admit that I read those reviews and I watch bad television after. I try not to, but I want to read the good reviews, and I don’t have the will power to skip the mean stuff.

Overall though, hearing people’s honest opinion on your work is really priceless. My Sydney Rye Series has over 300 reviews on amazon and it’s great to have such a large picture of how readers feel about my work. Knowing what readers like about my books helps me give them more of it. And if I see a recurring complaint I can fix it. So while negative criticism can hurt (fine, always hurts), maybe it’s still a good thing.

Strings of Glass by Emily Kimelman -- Review and Giveaway

(Mystery/Thriller)

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly drawn commenter will receive a Strings of Glass tote bag--for a better chance to win, click on the tour banner--visit and comment on her other stops as well.

STRINGS OF GLASS is the fourth novel in Emily Kimelman's Sydney Rye Series of dark murder mystery novels. This series features a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don't mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

Sydney Rye is hanging out in India with her boyfriend, Dan, reading paperbacks and sipping beer. No violence and no reminders of her past. But when she and Blue, are attacked by a pack of wild dogs, Sydney starts to feel that old itch again; to do good by being bad.

Trouble finds Rye when she stops the attempted rape and murder of Anita, a reporter working on a story of corruption and human trafficking. The atrocities Anita describes send Sydney, Blue and Dan on a quest that takes them across India after a dangerous and, up until now, untouchable, figure. While Sydney struggles to accept her true nature she realizes that it is the only way to end decades of abuse and exploitation. But Rye fears that she will lose herself, becoming no better than the monster she fights against.

Ms. Kimelman jumps right into the action with an attack on Sydney and Blue by a pack of feral dogs. My heart was racing during the fight--it was that clearly drawn! And, things don't slow down much from that first moment.

Sydney and Dan are chilling out--and Dan is loving it. Sydney is too, but she's getting itchy feet--especially after the adrenaline rush she feels after the dog fight.

This, of course, leads to conflict with Dan--a conflict not helped by the reappearance of Mulberry into their lives. And, when Sydney stumbles into an attempted rape and murder, she jumps right in--and discovers a hidden darkness of corruption and abuse in India involving children and a powerful, virtually unstoppable, man.

Ms. Kimelman's stories just keep getting better and better. Her character development is spot on--there's never a feeling of "she wouldn't do that" when Sydney does or says something. It's one reason I enjoy her books so much. I really care about the characters and what they are going through. And, the development she leaves us with at the end... oh, man. :::zips lips shut:::

Although this book could probably be read as a stand-alone (like the rest of her books) I really feel that the reader would be doing herself a disservice if she didn't read them in order. To be able to see where Sydney started and where she winds up--well, that's a joy (pun intended) in itself.

4 stars, Ms. Kimelman.
