It’s Christmas Eve morning in the tiny New England town of Dickens.

Santa’s arrival is imminent, and a hint of snow is in the air.

Amy Dorrit is just about to open her popular diner for the breakfast rush when she discovers an abandoned baby on her back doorstep.

Amy knows she should call the authorities and turn the infant over to them, but she just can’t. Thoughts of her own abandonment as a baby flood through her and she wants to keep the little one out of the hands of the authorities until the mother – hopefully –returns.

But will the mom come back? And if she doesn’t, what is Amy prepared to do about the baby who has, already, claimed her heart?

“What in the name of all that’s holy are you holding, Amy Dorrit?”

Willie Jackson stood at her office door, a lit cigarette dangling from a corner of his mouth, his leather jacket hanging open and his eyes as big and round as his county-famous blueberry pancakes.

“What does it look like?” Amy dug around in the carrier searching for a bottle, pacifier, something, to soothe the baby’s cries. “Lose the cigarette. It’s a baby and I’m pretty sure it’s hungry.”

He lifted those shocked eyes to Amy’s face. “Girl, you been keeping secrets from ol’ Willie?”

“Oh for Pete’s sake. Are you nuts, William Jefferson Jackson? It’s not my baby. I found it at the back door when I came downstairs.”

“Whose is it?”

“No idea.”

“What is it?”

Holding the small bundle like a football in one arm, she shoved the piece of paper she’d found at him. “Same answer. I haven’t looked yet. Here, read this. I found it tucked inside the blanket.” Once he had it, Amy placed her pinky finger over the baby’s lips. It immediately rooted, then latched on to suck.

“I knew it. It’s starving.”

“‘I’m sorry,” he read aloud, ‘but I can’t take care of her—’ well, we know it’s a girl –‘I have no job and no way to hold on to one with a baby. Please forgive me for leaving her like this, but I saw how kind you were yesterday and I know you’ll take care of her like I can’t.’” Willie scratched his head. “Well, shit. We got us a real abandoned baby, here, Ames ol’ girl.”

“Don’t curse in front of her.” She shot him an annoyed glare, her left eyebrow inching up her forehead to her hairline.

“It ain’t like she can understand me. She’s a baby, fer Chri-” Her other eyebrow followed its twin. “Er, pity’s sake.”

“I need something to feed her with.” She glanced around her office. “Can you get me one of the cake decorating bottles? The ones with the plastic tip? I think that’ll work.”

“What’a’ya gonna feed her? Frosting? You ain’t got no mother’s milk and you can’t feed her coffee creamer.”

“Dam-I mean, drat. You’re right. I can give her a little water to hold her over until I can run out and get her some formula.”

“Shouldn’t you call the police? I mean, she’s been abandoned, ain’t she? You can’t just keep her.”

One look in the den and I felt like history was repeating itself because Giacomo’s twins were face down on the carpet, lying on top of one another, their limbs all twined together, grunting baby noises coming from deep down in their little bodies. Rocco, or maybe Carlo, was on top, unintentionally smothering his brother whose face he was sitting on, smashed flat into the carpet and making breathing impossible.

My brothers, engrossed in the game playing on television, were clueless to the potential disaster right in front of them.

I’d learned long ago yelling at them served no purpose. They were all masters at the art of ignoring me.

I made my way to the babies and, silently, lifted Rocco – or maybe Carlo – off his brother with one hand, the other flipping Carlo – or maybe Rocco – so he was supine. His little face was pale, his lips ringed with blue, but he took a huge breath, startled once, and then let out a bloodcurdling screech sounding remarkably like the wail his father had made back in his own baby days.

All five pair of male eyes turned to me at the sound. Not one of them moved from their comfy positions.

“Hey, Donna,” Giacomo said. “Everything okay?”

“Marvy,” I mumbled, hoisting a boy onto each hip, one of them silent, the other screaming like he was spewing out a lung or being dismembered. “I’m bringing the boys to their mother,” I said, wincing from the earsplitting shrieking. I wouldn’t be surprised if my left ear went deaf before the night ended.

Giacomo toasted me with his beer and said, “Thanks, sis,” his attention already focused back on the game.

In the kitchen I handed the screaming baby over to his mother and told her how I’d found her sons. It wasn’t my job any longer to discipline or try to guide my brothers. They had wives for that now. And from the look of abject fury on Margaret Rose’s face I knew Giacomo would be getting his comeuppance later on when they were home.

I didn’t feel an iota of pity for him.

With the fratricidal wannabe glued to my hip, I went back to the dining room and finally opened the wine bottle single handedly.

10 Things I wish I knew about being an author I didn’t know before I was published

I found out my first book, Skater’s Waltz, had been contracted for publication while I was attending the 2014 RWA conference in San Antonio, TX. Shocked, thrilled, and terrified, I thought the hard part – finding someone willing to publish my novel – was over.

Yeah…not so much.

Those months after learning my book was going to be published were a severe and steep learning curve for me. I thought I knew what was entailed in being a published author. I was sososo wrong.

#1: it’s not over when you type THE END. It’s just the beginning…

After I signed on the dotted line, the real work began. I’d been published for years in literary fiction anthologies and in non-fiction magazines and periodicals. The literary magazines accepted the work as is, the non-fiction articles were sometimes reworked and refined by editors to allow for spacing considerations. My point is that it was someone else’s job to get the piece publishing-presentable.

Not anymore. Welcome to the world of book fiction.

#2: the hard work starts after you contract for publication…

My first book went through 3 rounds of edits between my editor and myself before it was sent to galleys for actual publication. And even after it went out to the copy editor, there were still some changes that needed to be made. I was ready to rip my hair out at one point. All I kept thinking as more and more edit suggestions came my way was, “Why the heck did they want this if it needs so much work??”

#3: Editors are the most underrated and undervalued people on the publishing food chain…

All editors are good at their job – they have to be. But the ones who are truly great make a good book even better. They find the little twists and turns of a phrase, or a word change, or a sentence deletion that is key to making the reader want to read more. A good Editor can make – or break – your publishing career.

My editors have been some of the great ones, and thank you, Jesus for that!

#4: you should have taken marketing classes in college…

I will admit this freely – I was unbelievably naïve when I signed that first contract. I thought the publisher was going to do all the marketing necessary to promote my book, get it on a best-seller list, and generally skyrocket me to fame.

Yeah, AGAIN, not so much!

The minute your book is contracted and the editing begins, you need to start promoting it. Often and everywhere. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google, your website, blog tours, newspaper press releases, your Aunt Maimie’s bridge club. Anywhere, everywhere, and as often as you can, so that when you finally have a release date, the buzz about the book will have started, grown to fever pitch and resulted in so many pre-orders your head spins.

That’s the dream, peeps. #5: before the first book hits the shelves you’d better be working on, or done with, book #2…

As a writer you can never – NEVER – rest on your laurels. It is a true axiom of publishing: you are only as good as your next book. So while you are doing all that dreaded marketing, take time each day and write…write…write. I had book two on my editor’s desk before book one was released. Same for book 3. Keep ‘em coming.

#6: don’t think everyone is just going to love your book to bits. Here is the realest statement you will ever hear from me: reviews suck the life out of you. For every 6 people that give you a 4 or 5 rating and a great review on Amazon, 2-3 will give it a 3, 2, or the dreaded 1 and tell you all the horrible reasons why they hated your work. You can’t please everyone, so don’t try. The best advice I heard at that 2014 RWA conference was to write the book of your heart, write it for you, no one else. I still do that to this day.

#7: writing is a lonely, solitary career Writing, editing, revising, plotting are all – for the most part – done alone in the privacy of your office or wherever you plant your butt and laptop to work. Days will go by where I will not talk to anyone except my husband before he leaves for work in the morning, and then when he comes home at night. If I am under an editing deadline, I may not leave the house for days or weeks until I am done. I am a very sociable person and like being around my friends and chatting away. The only one I chat to nowadays is my Dragon speech-to-text program.

#8: you will not be an overnight success and publishing wunderkind

I’m gonna chalk this up to naivete again when I tell you that I really thought once my book was published I would have USA bestselling authors call me to “do lunch,” or that every book club in my state would be vying for me to speak at their meetings. The days following my first release I received one phone call from my daughter, asking if I could send her something from the dresser in her childhood bedroom. The TODAY show didn’t come knocking on my front door requesting an interview; the NYTimes didn’t reach out to me.

#9: you will not make $1,000.000 off your first book.

Factoring all the money I spent on book promotion, book tours, and for author copies, it took me until my sixth book was released before I started to break even with each subsequent book release. At this rate, by the time I release book 312 I will start to show a profit.

#10: you need to take time to breathe and enjoy…

Yes, I was overwhelmed, naïve, frustrated and generally anxious with the release of my first book. But I was also thrilled at having my dream – finally - come true. It was a long road for me to book publication. I was 54 years old when the first one came out, a time when most people are starting to look toward the end of their working life. Not me. Mine was just beginning and I wanted to savor every moment of how it felt to hold my first book in my hands; see my name in print on the cover of a book I’d penned; sign my first autograph on a copy someone had actually paid cash-money for! Don’t let anything ever take away or overwhelm you from that sense of wonderful, soul-soaring achievement you’ve accomplished. Take a picture – take several! Keep a diary of everything you’ve accomplished. Be proud of yourself. You deserve to be.

My free hand slid up his jacket, basking in the rich texture of the fabric, to skim across the column of his throat and settle against his cheek. His skin was smooth and clean-shaven, warm and velvety soft against my palm. Connor let go of my arm and slipped his hand down my back. With his fingers pressed against the dip in my spine, he pressed me in even closer. His tongue nipped and sipped at my own as his fingers fanned across my back and kneaded.

Who knew the small of your back was such an erogenous zone? He must have first-hand knowledge about a particularly sensitive nerve bundle in that region because my thighs started to tremble and a deep-seated liquid warmth, like warm butter melting over hot morning ciabatta rolls, spread throughout my system. A restlessness for more shunted through me from top to bottom, making me fidget and writhe for release. I think I moaned. Or maybe that was Connor. I wasn’t sure, but one thing I was sure of was that in all the time I’d been married, I’d never felt so turned on by a simple kiss before.

Okay, well, it really wasn’t a simple kiss. More a life-changing event.

Welcome to It's Raining Books! What group did you hang out with in high school?

The kids in Glee Club, only we called it Chorus back then. I was a first soprano and performed in the chorus in all the high school musicals.

What are you passionate about these days?

What a great question! We are a society that still doesn’t have gender equality with regard to pay scale. I despise the fact that female authors, actresses, office workers, even female managers aren’t paid the same as their male counterparts. This needs to end. Now. I am on a mission to find women who are running for office who vocally support pay equity along gender lines and do whatever I can to help support their elections.

If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?

Start earlier. I was 55 when my first book was published. That’s a little older than the industry standards to be starting out. I think if given the chance I would have started pursuing publication somewhere in my 30’s when I first started writing romance for just myself to read. I had 25 manuscripts before I even submitted one.

Ebook or print? And why?

Both, for very different reasons. I read a lot. A LOT. My Goodreads reader challenge for 2018 is 175 books. I travel a great deal and carting print books around in luggage is difficult, esp. nowadays when if you go over the weight limit on a plane by 1 ounce, you’re penalized. SO I love the convenience of my Kindle when I travel.

But there is something about a print book…. I only read print when I am home. Curling up in a chair by the lit fireplace in winter with my favorite authors in print form is as close to Nirvana as I will probably ever come.

What is your favorite scene in this book?

The last three pages. I’m not going to tell you why…you need to read it for yourself!

“More specifically,” he added, “smile at me. You do at everyone else. From Dixon, to his son; the crew. Even Melora. Everyone, but me.”

“I—“

His grip tightened a little as he pulled her in closer, their torsos almost touching.

“Why? Why can you show everyone else that little piece of yourself, but not me?”

“I…I don’t know how to answer that,” she said. “I know I was thrust on you without you wanting me here. I know you don’t like me, I—“

“That’s not true. I didn’t want to like you,” he admitted. “There’s a difference. You’re a producer. A bottom line watcher. An annoying necessity. Liking you goes against the grain.”

At that she did smile, because she knew it was true.

“See now,” he said, as he slid his other hand up her arm to settle on the back of her neck, fingers curling up into her hair to hold on. “When you do that? When you smile at me like that, so openly, so…freely? I can’t think about anything else.”

A gentle tug and he had her head pillowed in his spread palms as he bent his own down to hers.

Through her glasses she watched the fine whiskey in his eyes blend with the ink of his pupils as they dilated.

“I haven’t been able to think clearly about anything for the past few days.” His mouth was a whisper from hers. His gaze skimmed from her eyes to her mouth and back again in one slow string of heat. “Except for this.”

She thought she’d be prepared for the feel of his lips on hers again. After all, she’d done little else but reminisce about their texture and taste for days. But she was wrong.

So wrong.

Nothing could have ever prepared her for the way the slight pressure he placed on the back of her neck as he brought her closer sent a shiver of such carnal delight down her spine she almost hummed. Or the way his breath, warm and full, felt as it washed over her cheeks. And she certainly wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions he released within her when he quite expertly parted her lips and deepened the kiss, pulling at her very soul.

No, nothing in her life had equipped her with how to deal with Nikko Stamp’s kiss.

So she simply let go of all thought, fear, and concern, and surrendered to it.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write romance because I truly believe everyone deserves their own Happily Ever After. There is so much sadness and negativity in the world today, reading about two ordinary people who, through some quirk of the universe and the author’s imagination, find themselves and fall in love is uplifting and empowering to me.

What research is required?

In every book I write, I have a strong heroine. Emotionally, physically, spiritually strong. They are all successful in what they do, professionally, as well. I’ve written a master chef, an artist, a professional ice skater, a photographer, a doctor, a chocolatier, a CPA. Except for the chef and the ice skater, I knew nothing about the other professions. So, in order to make the characters’ actions and knowledge believable to the readers – because if it’s wrong on any count they will let you know! – I had to research these occupations. My mother in law is an artist, so that one was easy. A very good friend of mine is a doctor – again, easy. The photographer one was the easiest and the hardest because my best friend’s daughter is a professional photographer. So when I needed new head shots for publicity (the hard part, because I hate having my picture taken!) I contracted with her and then went about picking her brain while we were shooting. For the other professions, I contacted friends of friends and then set up meetings to ask questions. I think in one week I was at Panera five days in a row, basically interviewing people!

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

Gemma Laine is the warrior sister in the Laine family. She’s the one the others went to when they were bullied, growing up, because even at a young age Gemma had a take-no-prisoners personality and would always defend her sisters in whatever battle they found themselves in – be it verbal or physical. What I learned from her while writing her was that past bad experiences can either break you or make you as a person. Without giving away any spoilers, something happened to Gemma when she was a teenager that promoted her to learn marital arts, where she found she had an innate talent. She uses that talent in her life to keep her grounded emotionally and to feel strong, physically.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I have one habit that absolutely annoys everyone in my realm. I always carry a notebook wherever I go – whether out to lunch with my friends, to the grocery store, even to Mass. When an idea hits me, or a snippet of dialogue that I’ve been struggling over finally breaks through, I whip out my notebook and write it down. Even in Church! I’ve been using the notebook more and more these past few years since I hit menopause because, you know….menopause brain! Which translates to wicked forgetfulness!

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Plotter. First, last, always. I’m that person who never just sets out for a casual stroll, or a car trip just to drive around. I need to know where we are going, when we are getting there, and who we’ll see or what we’ll do when we get there. It really is obnoxious, but it’s the only way I know how to be. Before I ever type a word on the page of a new book I know where I’m going, what my people are going to say and do, and the twists and turns they’ll encounter on their road to HEA. Yes, I do make detours along the way, but for the majority of the book detailed plotline gets me where I want to go.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

My vision board for the next romance series I’m writing! I’m a little schizoid about works in progress, so I won’t tell you much about it, but it involved weddings, small towns, and crazy family members.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Do you have a question for our readers?

Actually, I do. How do readers feel about reading romances for people older than the age of 35? Most contemporary romances deal with a younger crowd ( typically 203, 30.s early 40s.) I’ve been knocking around a series of women and men a little older and wiser in their 50s. Is that too old for the book reading audience? With so many divorces, spousal deaths, etc, in this age group, my thought that everyone deserves their own Happliy Ever After extends to them as well. Do you think there’s a market for that type of romance, the kind that caters to a more mature crowd? Let me know. And thanks for any input.

“How many do I have to hit for you to be satisfied?”

Ky looked over to where she stood to the side of the garage, the Glock in her hand, its barrel aimed at the ground. He’d watched her load the clip, then weigh and balance the gun in her hand like she did it every day of her life.

“All of them. You might never get a second chance if a first bullet misses an attacker, so yes. All of them.”

She moved to the line in the grass he’d drawn for her to shoot from, mumbling something he couldn’t hear, but guessing it wasn’t something complementary.

“Ready?” he asked.

“Yup. Any particular order you want me to hit them in?”

He had to bite back the grin threatening to fly free at her snooty, disgruntled tone.

“Your call.”

Gemma nodded and took a stance. She flexed her shoulders and neck, the motion so subtly erotic, it made his pulse quicken, and she shifted her weight. From his viewing position behind her, he appreciated just how tall and lean she was. Narrow shoulders were relaxed and tapered down into a waist no bigger than a hand span. How many times in the past few days had he thought what it would be like to slip his own hands around that tiny area and pull her in close? Too many for prudence, that was for sure.

The first bottle, the one he’d put the farthest from them, shattered into a thousand fragments. Before he could take a full breath, she’d hit the next two.

The final three closer ones she dispatched with equal ease.

When she turned to him and asked, “Satisfied?” in a tone filled with condescension, Ky had to physically restrain himself from running to her, lifting her up in his arms, and kissing the gorgeous smirk off her mouth.

Because he’d discovered how much he liked sparring with her—go figure that out—he pursed his lips and nodded. “Not bad.”

Five Things You Might Not Know About Peggy Jaeger

1. I love to sing when I’m cleaning the house. Rip-roaring, shatter your eardrums singing. I jack my I-pod up to level 11 (any Spinal Tap fans out there?) and as I go around the house, vacuuming, dusting, and rearranging, I belt my heart out. Of course I only clean (and sing) when no one is home because, really, it’s not nice to torture people.

2. I am on old black and white movie savant. 1939 was the best year – in my humble opinion – for the movie industry. Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Of Mice and Men, Dark Victory, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Women….and on and on. I can quote entire scenes of dialogue from most of them and I never lose in Trivial Pursuit when a question about this year in film comes up. Never.

3. My very first childhood celebrity crush was Roddy McDowell. I know…but I was a sucker for those Lassie movies!

4. I went on my very first “date” when I was 22 years old and had just graduated from college. Late bloomer, anyone? Is it a wonder at all that I love to read and write Romance novels??

5. I’m terrified of dogs I don’t personally know because I was viciously bitten by a German Shepard when I was 2 years old. I still have the scars on my leg from the encounter.
