Circle of Dishonor by Carla Swafford - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Carla will award one copy of CIRCLE OF DISHONOR at every stop to a randomly drawn commenter, and a $25 Amazon/BN GC to one randomly chosen winner via Rafflecopter during the tour. Please click the banner to see the other stops on this tour.

John “Ice” Takahashi’s final job for The Circle has an unexpected hitch in it; he’s fallen for an innocent civilian and his enemies know it. With his mission in a shambles, he’ll do anything to protect her, including kill. So how can a man without honor prove he’s worthy of her love?

Lena Matthews feels like she’s playing with fire by dating the mysterious Master J. He’s exotic, dangerous, and exactly what she needs in her boring life. With the bad guys bearing down on them, she discovers a whole new world of sensuality that binds her heart to his forever.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

Lena Matthews felt like a perverted voyeur.

Sitting in a coffee shop across the courtyard from the martial arts studio’s glass storefront, she stared at the tae kwon do class as they kicked and jabbed. Most of the students wore white pajama-like uniforms, except for the teacher. He stood out in black with his shaggy dark hair and ripped body. The man looked good enough to lick.

For the last five weeks after her tai chi class, she’d claimed the same chair and watched his every move. Behind her, others in the coffee shop chatted about the class and the mysterious man leading it.

From what she’d overheard, his name was John Takahashi, and the students called him Master J.

Master? Oh, yeah. She could imagine he’d master many things. With his strong hands and long muscled arms and legs, he likely controlled any situation or person. He could easily lift and hold her against the wall as he stroked her to a climax. She whimpered and squeezed her knees together.

A shake of her head knocked out the dirty thoughts racing through her mind. She knew better. He’d never be attracted to an ordinary person like her. The woman he chose would be totally the opposite of her: young, athletic with honey blonde hair. Lena was about as interesting as watching bread turn to toast.

A Burning Truth by Joyce Proell - Spotlight and Amazon GC giveaway!

BBT A Burning Truth Banner copy
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Joyce will be awarding a $20 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

MEDIA KIT a_burning_truth_ecover (2)There’s no shortage of deadly deeds in 1881 Chicago as school administrator Cady Delafield and entrepreneur Doyle Flanagan plan their wedding. When one of Doyle’s workers is brutally killed he must use his considerable power to stop a mysterious enemy bent on destroying his reputation and business empire. But as Cady and Doyle struggle to keep their marriage on track, the murder victims might not be the only casualties.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Doyle sat in the carriage, his brain frozen and his limbs unable to move. He watched Cady run up the steps and disappear into Ophelia’s impenetrable stone manor. When the front door boomed shut with the noise of a cannon blast, he jumped. He lurched forward and exploded out of the vehicle. She wasn’t getting rid of him so easily. In fact, she wasn’t getting rid of him at all. He had a voice in the matter. He intended to be heard.

Just as soon as he thought it, his steps faltered and he ground to a stop.

“Damn!”

Now was not the time to try to reason with her, not when she was in a cold fury. He pumped a fist against a thigh and stared at the mansion’s rock façade, aware her current state of mind was as solid and unshakable. Even if he managed to get beyond the front door, she wouldn’t listen. Not now.

His head fell back. A piercing ache tore through him, as if his heart and soul had been shredded and tossed aside. Gunmetal storm clouds reeled over the sky, bleak and threatening. The bite in the air made his cheeks sting. Inside he was hollowed and gutted. His fingers curled and uncurled. Muscles coiled, he pivoted with a fierce twist, snapped an order to Phelps then threw himself back into the carriage. His next move must be deployed with utmost care. The carriage jolted forward and thrust him back against the seat cushion. She needed time to cool. Then he’d be back, and she’d listen to what he had to say.

About the Author:Joyce grew up in Minnesota and attended college and grad school in Chicago. After working in mental health, she retired at a young age to write full-time. Life Flight by Shaunna Wolf - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $50 Amazon or BN gift card to one randomly drawn winner via the Rafflecopter below. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Malachi Blackfeather has spent twenty years in the Army. Two of those years as a Vietnam POW. Now that he's out, all he wants is some peace and quiet to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. Between the flashbacks, and an over interest in sex that is now being called sex addiction, finding his path isn't easy.

Kat is trying to escape an abusive marriage. Her soon to be ex is a master at manipulating the system, and her family thinks she should stay with him, "because no other man will want her". She's looking for escape in any form she can get it.

When they meet, sparks fly. Trapped by a blizzard, can two damaged people, who think there is no chance of love in the world for them, find each other, and survive an unforeseen circumstance that puts both of them in danger?

Mystery, romance, and danger, fill this novel, with a story that will draw you in and not let go.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

The heater stood dark and cold. I should have gotten up after we were done. Filled it and restarted it. I hadn’t wanted to move. Still didn’t want to, despite the cold in the room. Dim light streamed in through the window, sleety snow still battered the glass. Shook the door in its frame. How long could this blizzard go on?

I tightened my arms around Kat. Forever. Then she would have to stay right in this room with me--in my arms. Nothing made sense, everything my life had been for the last twenty-five years rang like a bad dream, a nightmare from the pits of Vietnam. So dead inside that any feeling fed me, woman after woman, man after man, no one let me hold on to what I felt for more than a few shared moments. Lies whispered to the tiny ember of my soul that I had left. This is the one, they told me, this one will make you feel, will bring you back to life.

They never did.

Kat ran her hand down my arm. Snuggled closer to me. A chill that had nothing to do with how cold the room had become, shook me. Spoke to me. I could again with her, and I knew I would keep feeling what I was. Alive. Warm. As if I had a soul inside me, not just a demon who preyed on others for my next fix of emotions.

“I should fill that heater and get us some warmth again.”

“Yeah, I suppose one of us should,” she said with no intention to do so in her voice.

I tightened the bear’s embrace I held her in, tangled my legs with hers. She pushed at my arm, wanted to make me let go of her.

“I don’t want to let go of you yet,” I said. If I let her go, the surging emotions inside me would vanish with the warmth of holding her.

Intent to Kill by Ryshia Kennie - Review tour and giveaway

This review is done in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Leave a comment, or ask the author a question, for the chance to win a $25 Amazon GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A ruthless band of smugglers will stop at nothing to strip Cambodia of its priceless ancient artifacts, even if it means using and killing female tourists. Journalist Claire Linton knows she’s on to the story of a lifetime. But for Claire, it’s personal too: long before her “Uncle Jack” came to the U.S., he was held captive in the nightmarish killing fields of Cambodia, and Claire senses there might be a connection between that long-ago bloody history and the dark crimes plaguing the country today.

Simon Trent is a burnt-out Interpol agent who disappeared after his last case turned fatal. But with the resurgence in smuggling and all signs pointing to the man who once escaped his grasp, he comes out of hiding to finish the job that’s haunted him for years. What he doesn’t see coming is Claire, the beautiful and headstrong reporter who may be a threat to his case—and to his heart.

As Claire and Simon reluctantly join forces to unravel a mystery that reaches deep into her family history and may be his only chance at redemption, they must fight to stay one step ahead of a brutal killer—and one step away from the dangerous feelings building between them.

My review:  Intent to Kill starts off with a bang -- hooking me right away, but then slows down immediately following the first chapter. I have to admit, if I hadn't been reading this book for a review, I might have stopped reading... and that would have been a mistake.

We spend the next few chapters setting up the dominoes for the rest of the book. We meet the players, Claire, Simon and our villain and we delve into the country of Cambodia.  I admit to being a bit frustrated that Simon and Claire spent next to no time together for quite a bit of the beginning -- when I read romantic suspense, I'm looking for the romance to start almost immediately.  Again, though, I'm glad I stuck it out because holy smokes, once the ball gets rolling, it's a fantastic story.

I understand why things started as they did, as things needed to be set up in order to work. It's a pretty complicated story with a lot going on, and most of the characters have some pretty significant skeletons in their closets.  It makes for an intriguing read.  Thankfully, once Claire and Simon do start spending time together, the romantic in me was plenty satisfied.

I've never read a book set in Cambodia before, and knew little about its history, so I was edified along with entertained.

If you're a fan of romantic suspense, I can recommend this book -- just be patient at the beginning because the payoff is well worth it.

3.5 Flowers - This was a good book. I liked it.

The Canadian prairies are where Ryshia Kennie makes her home with her husband and one opinionated and slightly geriatric, Irish Terrier. The winner of her city’s Writing Award in 2011, her novels have taken her characters from the depression era prairies in her first book “From the Dust” to the ancient stones of Angkor Wat in her latest book, “Intent to Kill”. There’s never a lack of places to set a story as the too long prairie winters occasionally find her with travel journal in hand seeking adventure on foreign shores. While facing off a Monitor Lizard before breakfast or running through the Kasbah chased by an enraged Water Carrier aren’t normal travel experiences and might never find a place in one of her stories, they do make great travel stories. But it’s the memories of those exotic worlds, the smell of the spices, the words of a stranger, the furtive look one man gives another, that often become the catalyst for a suspenseful story with a deadly villain and an intrepid hero and heroine who must battle for their right to love or even their right to live, in a place that neither may call home. After putting her life on the line to protect classified intelligence, military psychologist Mia Kensington is on a cross-country road trip from hell with an intrusive save-the-day hero. Uninterested in his white knight act, she’d rather take her chances without the ruggedly handsome, cold-blooded operative who boasts an alpha complex and too many guns.

Colby Winters, an elite member of The Titan Group, has a single objective on his black ops mission: recover a document important to national security. It was supposed to be an easy in-and-out operation. But now, by any means necessary becomes a survival mantra when he faces off with a stunning woman he can’t leave behind.

When Titan’s safe houses are compromised, Colby stashes Mia at his home, exposing his secret—he’s the adoptive father of an orphaned baby girl. Too soon, danger arrives and Mia lands in the hands of a sadistic cartel king with a taste for torture. As hours bleed into fear-drenched days, Colby races across the globe and through a firestorm of bullets to save the woman he can’t live without.

Enjoy an excerpt: She smelled like vanilla and sugar, even after the hell she’d been through that day. Her soft hair brushed up against his bare bicep. Unsettled need prickled down his neck. His throat tightened, and fire ran to his groin.

“Mia…” Distraction and anticipation stole words from his lips.

His heart pounded loud in his chest, fighting for his attention. With each flutter of her eyelashes and innocent movement against his skin, his tension spiked. It was shocking. He was on the job. There was no time for distraction. Losing control was unheard of. Unacceptable.

His arm was cemented around her shoulder, and it wasn’t moving. He stared as the broken white lines on the highway passed in quick revolutions, one right after another. The hum of the truck’s engine poked at his concentration.

He needed to get out of this truck. He needed cool, fresh air to cover him. Right now. Deep, mind-clearing breaths were in order as soon as possible. Anything to get his disciplined mind back to what it did best—analyze, act, accomplish.

Winters made a sharp exit off the highway onto an unlit ramp. He jammed on the brakes. Gravel spit from under the truck. The back end skidded and fishtailed before it came to a stop. His heart thumped. His throat tightened. The faint scent of burned rubber filtered into the pickup cab.

Oh, what the hell. No way was he getting out of this truck.

As fast as he pulled off the road, he brought her close to his face, and without even a second to hover over her, he crushed his lips onto hers. Her tense mouth gasped a breath, then melted. The hot caress of her tongue sent explosions from his chest to the palms of his hands. The pounding in his heart didn’t get any better. It only pushed his racing pulse faster, making it gallop wild, as intoxicating rockets flamed inside him.

Insanity. She was delicious insanity.

In between breathless pants, wicked want fired. Her lips were full. Her kiss was better than he expected, and hell, he expected a whole lot. She stoked him faster than he could ever remember. A kiss unlike any other kiss. There was no denying that.

He knotted a hand in her hair, held her to him, and devoured her. The press of her silken flesh made him hunger for more. His breathing deteriorated into a desperate rasp of torture. With each inhalation, he smelled, tasted, and consumed feminine beauty. This angel was a vixen in disguise, and God help him, he wanted her.

Her small hands wrapped into his T-shirt, then she stroked his stomach, flexing her fingertips against the fabric and straining against him. He dropped his lips to her neck, and she moaned. That perfect purr fanned his desperation. Her goose bumps flashed under his tongue’s caress, and she shuddered with each whipping kiss.

She tasted of sweat and tear gas, of soft woman, and carnal ambition. There wasn’t a timid thing about Mia. Who was he to assume what she wanted? To think she needed soothing and caring? It seemed all she needed was him. Hard. Tough. Possessive.

MOM. WIFE. AUTHOR.

Lover of all things sexy and happily ever after.

I live outside Washington, DC with my family: my husband (who doesn’t mind my collection of book boyfriends), an independent toddler, and an English bulldog named Britta who loves to be a conversation piece. Oh, we have a baby on the way—arriving about the same time as WINTERS HEAT debuts!

I love southern food, listen to country music, am always too hot or too cold, and spend hours reading and writing. I cheer on my University of Louisville Cardinals-GO CARDS! When I’m not pregnant (or nursing), I like a little bourbon or sweet wine. Pregnant or not, I love a lot of chocolate.

I can’t save the world, so instead, I write about those that do. There’s a special place in my heart for those who keep us safe. My Titan series debuts this fall with five titles available in 2013: WINTERS HEAT, GARRISON’S CREED, WESTIN’S CHASE, CHASED, and GAMBLED.

Five things about Evie Owens for Once and Forever - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

Evie Owens, one of the authors of "Once and Forever" has come by to speak with us as part of a Virtual Book Tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The authors will award a digital copy of the book to five randomly drawn commenters and one grand prize of a $50 Amazon GC will be awarded to a randomly drawn commenter from this tour and the review tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour--remember, the more you comment, the better your chances of winning.

Five things you probably wouldn't guess about Evie Owens

1) I'm half Japanese. My parents adopted me when they were stationed in Japan. We moved back to the states when I was 9 months old and I've never been back. One of these days! People often guess that I'm of mixed ethnicity, but nobody ever guesses that Japanese is one of them. Well, except this one time at Benhihana's...

2) I can milk a cow. I've lived in the Washington, D.C., area for the past 25 years, but I grew up on a dairy farm in Upper Michigan. So I can milk a cow, collect eggs, and climb a silo...a stunt my father never did forgive me for doing. (I just read this list to my friend and she wanted to know if I could rope and tie a calf, too? And the answer is no, because I never had to. They came when I called.)

3) These days, between the day jobbery and the writing, I'm one of the least domestic people I know. But I can sew! Like, clothes. Like, "pick up a pattern from Simplicity, cut pieces out of cloth, and stitch together a blouse or a dress or a wizard costume with silver lame lining in the dagged sleeves" sew. My mother and I used to spend so much time in fabric stores my kids would start crying when we pulled into the parking lot.

4) And speaking of my mother, she loved hummingbirds. She kept several hummingbird feeders and could watch them for hours. Every time I see a hummingbird, I think of her. I, on the other hand, collect skulls. Well, you know, you buy one skull ring and your friends catch sight of it and the next thing you know, you're collecting skulls. Right? So every time my kids see a skull, they think of me.

5) And last, but not least, I lost 50 pounds last year. My friend and I decided to join WeightWatchers the week before Thanksgiving. Because that made perfect sense. I've still got 10 pounds to go, but my doctor's a lot happier with me now, and there are two things I know for sure about WW success: There are 4 points in 5 fluid ounces of Pinot Noir, and 2 points in a snack-size Mounds bar.

Once and Forever - An anthology By Mary Blayney, Elaine Fox, Emelle Gamble, Lavinia Kent and introducing Evie Owens

From five compelling authors, five original novellas which will make you laugh and cry, and believe in a love that once found will last forever. Meet a duke, a psychic, a bodyguard and a professor…and one "guardian fairy" in absorbing stories ranging from regency and contemporary romance to paranormal and women's fiction.

Playing for Keeps by Mary Blayney

Actress Kendall Marshall is determined to get an autograph for her sick sister from famous TV personality Mike O’Hara, the Oprah Winfrey of sports. In the process she meets his brother, security consultant Steve Marshall, lands a job on O’Hara’s show and gets in the way of a man set on causing big trouble. As the stalkers attacks escalate, Steve and Kendall are thrown together and find it impossible to ignore the chemistry between them.

The Princess & the Pinot by Elaine Fox

When a beautiful woman shows up at the Vineyard Inn, wine manager Kim is certain she’s been sent by fate for the inn’s owner, Cooper. Self-effacing to a fault, Kim knows she can’t hold a candle to Principessa Bella, who also seems to know even more about wine than Kim herself, but her heart has belonged to Cooper since they shared one kiss as teenagers.

While Prin sweeps easily into the job of sommelier at the renowned inn, Kim is afraid Prin will sweep just as surely into Cooper’s arms if she doesn’t do something about it. Can she tell Cooper how she feels without losing even his friendship?

Kim is willing to try except for one problem: she’s almost certainly losing her mind. Or is that belching, swearing, smoking, farting fairy – who claims to be trying to help her – real?

Duets by Emelle Gamble

Duets offers alternating looks into the lives of two women who would seem to have little or nothing in common.

Screen star Molly Harper is on the verge of marrying a man who has swept her off her feet, thought perhaps hasn’t swept all her feelings for her first love away. Anne Sullivan, happily married for twenty-five years, is fighting to hold onto the man she loves, and hold off a confrontation that could shatter her family’s image of what they are.

Duets confronts a past secret that ties these two women’s lives together, just as chance events turn Molly and Anne’s worlds upside down.

Never and Forever by Lavinia Kent

Never and Forever is the beginning of the love story of two people who shouldn’t belong together. Molly, Miss Wilkes, runs an employment agency helping women of quality find positions perfected suited to their characters. Although her father held the title of Earl for just over a week before his death, Molly has never wanted to be a lady. She knows her place in this world – and it is not at the center of society.

The Duke of Radford also knows his place in this world – and it’s above everybody else’s. He cannot imagine a world without all the privilege and power that comes from being Radford. He’s had foreign princesses and heiresses dangled before him for years. Why would he ever have interest in a simple woman who doesn’t even understand that she should want to be a duchess?

Can these two overcome the obstacles of their own beliefs and realize that love can make all things possible?

Never and forever are both a very long time. Where will their love fit?

The Psychic Detective by Evie Owens

Psychic Martin Sterling doesn't trust cops--and the feeling is mutual. Detective Erin Healy needs more than a ghost story to save her job and reputation. Her partner is dead, a million dollars in drugs and money is missing, and all the evidence points to her.

Can a sexy psychic and a by the book cop, trapped between the living and the dead, unearth the truth? Or will a cold-blooded killer get away with it all...

Now enjoy an excerpt from Evie Owen's story, "The Psychic Detective" in the anthology Once and Forever:

For a long moment he just stared back at her, into her, somehow, and Erin wondered what it would be like to believe. In psychics and magic and...to really believe in anything, other than the life you were living. She had police in her blood, though. If you couldn't see it, feel it, taste it, smell it--if you couldn't measure it in some way--it wasn't real.

No matter how much you might wish it was.

But how did he know the girl was pregnant? She wasn't showing yet.

Then she remembered he'd been watching them long before he joined them at the table, and in her mind's eye she saw the way Mitra's hands closed over her abdomen. Protecting and comforting. You didn't have to be psychic to figure that out. Just observant. And this guy was definitely observant.

Most con men were.

Evie Owens was born in Japan, but grew up on a dairy farm in Upper Michigan. She's waited tables and tended bar, which makes her a very good tipper, but writing is her passion. She's thrilled to be included in this anthology with some of her favorite authors.

These days, Evie lives in Maryland while her two fabulous daughters and one glorious granddaughter live too far away. Leaving her no alternative but to turn to a life of crazy cat ladyness (except for the "cat" and the "ladyness" parts).

The Psychic Detective is Evie’s first published novella.

Review: Shadow of Perception by Kristine Mason

(Full length, contemporary romantic suspense)

What happens when negligent plastic surgeons receive a taste of their own medicine…?

Chicago investigative reporter, Eden Risk, receives an unmarked envelope containing a postcard ordering her to watch the enclosed DVD…or someone else dies. No Police. After Eden watches the DVD, a gruesome, horrifying surgery, she turns to the private criminal investigation agency, CORE, for help. Only she hadn’t expected that help to come with a catch. Her former lover, Hudson Patterson, has been assigned to the case.

Hudson would rather have another CORE agent handle the investigation. Two years ago, he’d screwed things up with Eden…bad. And as more DVDs arrive, Eden and Hudson find themselves not only knee-deep in a twisted investigation, but forced to deal with their past, and the love they’d tried to deny.

It's been a long time since I've read a book that kept me riveted and left me a little sad and conflicted.  Shadow of Perception did all that and more.

First, kudos to the author for creating a villain who wasn't just plain evil.  So frequently we see sociopaths or villains so psychologically messed up it's hard to believe they could truly exist. There are actually two villains in this book, and one of them will make you question your own idea of what is right and wrong.

The hero and heroine were interesting, to be sure.  The conflict between them seemed to be settled a little too quickly, which made me question just how deeply Hudson wounded Eden before.  I think the greater conflict  was their difficulty in sharing their pasts, their feelings, their hopes for the future.  Also, I wish the issue of Eden's eating disorder had been addressed more completely.  I felt as if she got over it just too easily (though I suppose it's possible she's not actually over it -- maybe if we see her in the future it'll crop up again).

Those were the only real issues I had with this story -- nothing major, just little nit-picky things. The rest of the plot was great.  I admit that my ability to "see" what was happening in my mind was a bit of a  disadvantage here, as some of the scenes are pretty graphic.

I completely loved the secondary characters, but did feel as if I was missing a little of the dynamics between Eden and her sister for not having read book one.  I intend to rectify that mistake immediately.  So many of the other characters are begging to have their stories told and I can't wait for the next book.

The plot was solid, the writing clean, descriptive and easy to read, and I didn't notice any editing errors, but that may also be a credit to the writing keeping me so completely engrossed.   I'm so glad to have been introduced to Kristine Mason and can't wait to keep following the members of CORE.

Rated 5 Flowers - I loved this book! It's on my keeper shelf! I highly recommend it.

Inspiration strikes and she enters the world of Jack Parella, the owner/operator who talks like Humphrey Bogart but with a Southie accent and is more than willing to train Liza in the ways of amateur sleuthing, while simultaneously infuriating and titillating her. Though Liza starts the journey intending to rebuild her crumbling suburban life, she finds herself thrust into a fiery mystery as head of "Crimes of the Heart Detective Agency" with Parella by her side. Thus our dynamic duo is primed for their next adventure.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

All men cheat. At least that’s what I’d always heard but I never believed a word of it.

Until today.

I’m Liza Radley, I live in a two story gunmetal grey house near the end of a cul-de-sac. Bernie and I couldn’t afford actual cul-de-sac status six years ago when he started his practice here in Andover. Since then we’ve built our lives together brick by brick but now I find myself rifling thru his underwear drawer on a Thursday morning wondering if some young wolfette is trying to blow our house down.

Or blow my Bernie for that matter.

I mean, it’s not like I actually suspect him of the big A, but over breakfast my three best friends staged the suburban version of an intervention and now that the dirty little thought is lurking I can’t resist committing cardinal sin #1 from the Bad Wife Handbook. Snooping. Plus I want to prove the girls wrong and show them that my Berns and I are still in happily wedded bliss. Okay maybe not bliss…but I don’t know if bliss is even possible after 10 years of marriage so let’s just say we’re content in a frozen-lasagna-sex-once-a-month-with-the-lights-off sort of way.

Two months after her disappearance, a young woman's body turns up on a New Hampshire riverbank hundreds of miles from home. Now the murder victim’s identical twin, Rose Blue, tries to use her flawed psychic connection to her sister to solve the tragic case.

Homicide Detective Luke Lennox is skeptical of her abilities and finds the mysterious newcomer a distraction. As the department’s latest hire, he has a lot to prove, and he’s learned from past experiences a personal involvement with Rose will only end in disaster. When a threatening message alerts Rose the murderer dreams of them together, Lennox must stay close to Miss Blue. With the clock ticking and a cunning killer always one step ahead, Luke reluctantly allows her close to him during his investigation. But can he protect her from the danger that lies ahead, or lose his heart and career in this deadly game of doubles?

I started getting tense on the very first page of this story, and it didn’t stop until the very end. It was fascinating, frightening and unique. This is the story of twin sisters who have a strong bond between them. Rose Blue always seemed to know when something was wrong with her sister Dahlia Blue. This last time she was devastated when Dahlia was murdered.

Rose travels to Ledgeview, NH from her home in Vermont because she has to find out what happened and why and who did it. She meets up with the head detective, Luke Lennox, and together they began looking for answers. Luke was not altogether happy with her joining him, but she was determined to find her sister's killer.

Following them was an absolute delight, step by step as they followed every clue they could think of. Sometimes they found a lead, but more often they reached a dead end. They relationship between the two was touching and sensitive, and I really loved the way the author included this so cleverly, that it was a necessary part of the story. Having the spirit of her sister visiting her was exciting and made this story even more interesting.

Throwing in occasional thoughts of the unknown killer only heightened the tension and many times I had to put the book down just to catch my breath. Still, I had to know how it ended so I would pick it up again and turn another page.

Several times I thought I had figured out the identity of the killer and I was always wrong. I like the fact that I couldn’t figure it out until the very end when it was given to me. Then I thought, “of course, I should have known,”. But I hadn't.

This author writes an outstanding romantic suspense. One of the best I have read in a long time. I would absolutely recommend highly.

5 Flowers - I loved this book! It's on my keeper shelf! I highly recommend it.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

A chill seeped into Rose Blue’s hands, through her jeans and stocking feet on the wooden kitchen floor. She paused over her unmade sandwich and stretched the cuffs of her navy turtleneck downward.

The rip of duct tape echoed in her ears. Footsteps crunched against the stones. Closer. Closer.

The granite counter blurred and warped into a granite ledge overhanging a river.

The vision sucked her in.

A shadowy figure hovered over a petite woman wearing a pink parka and lying on the ridge. Clammy strands of blond hair clung to a heart-shaped face, a face the mirror image of her own.

“Dahlia!”

Oh, God! Gooseflesh rippled up Rose’s spine. The shadow bound Dahlia’s hands and feet with gray tape, round and round. Terror flooded Rose’s chest. Goose flesh ripped across her arms.

“Help!” she screamed before the duct tape silenced her sister’s last cry.

Rose gasped and turned over. She was lying on the planked floor in her one bedroom apartment. What happened? The hum of the furnace kicking on followed by a flash of heat filled the first floor apartment.

Her head ached like someone had slugged her. Near her hand, she spotted the butter knife. She grabbed the weapon and crawled toward the granite counter. Gripping the edge, she hauled herself to her feet. She held the blade in striking position while she tossed frantic glances over her shoulder to search the area.

Was she suffering a migraine, going crazy? She listened for the creep of a footstep, the sound of breathing, any noise in her apartment. “Who’s there?”

He didn’t commit suicide but who’s going to believe her...

Frustrated at being fired from her latest job and overwhelmed by her consolatory family, Sam decides to move to the family’s cabin at the lake. A place she hasn’t been since her dad committed suicide there twenty years before. Or did he? Snooping is something she’s good at but someone seems to be taking offense to her looking too closely at what has been happening at the lake. What she discovers is shocking. Now she must uncover what’s real and what’s not. All that she learned growing up, may be false.

Keegan, who has recently moved to the area to finish his latest book, is also trying to find out if his grandfather, who’d passed away ten years before, died of natural causes or was murdered.

The descendants of the four families who own the land around the lagoon are dying off. Since Sam and Keegan are the only ones questioning the deaths, they find themselves working together to seek the truth. Are people being murdered? Who would benefit from their deaths? Why would there be barricades and armed guards at the north end of the lake?

To stay alive, Sam and Keegan must find the answers and convince others, before more people are killed... including them.

This was a new author to me, and I wasn't certain about the story. It sounded like a routine suspense/intrique story with a little romance thrown in.

I want you to know that I was only partly right. It was a suspense/intrigue story, with some romance. However, it was not a routine story. There was suspense almost from the very beginning of the book. It was so exciting, and a lot suspenseful and there was just enough romance to make me happy.

The plot moved quickly, and I kept on reading without realizing the time until I was almost finished with it. I just couldn't put it down. This is a definite heart stopping and awesome suspense. I never really knew who the bad guys were, and who the good guys were. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. I like this about it. It was never predictable. I really enjoyed being surprised.

Every time I turned the page I discovered something new, different and extremely suspenseful. I know I use that word a lot, but it really applies to this story. This book really came alive to me. The characters were so clearly defined by this author, that I felt I knew them.

I loved this story from start to finish and would recommend it everyone. This is a real worth while book to read. You will not be disappointed.

5 Flowers - I loved this book! It's on my keeper shelf! I highly recommend it.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“Where is she?”

“Who? DD?”

“Of course, DD. Who the hell else would I be calling you about?”

“DD’s not with you?”

“No, she’s taken off. She said she never wants to see me again.” Shelley’s gut wrenching sobs filled the silence.

“Have you looked everywhere?”

“I’m not an idiot, Sam. This is my daughter.”

“Okay, look Shelley. I know you’re upset. Take a deep breath and tell me what happened.”

“We had a fight last night. She said daddy wasn’t her daddy...”

Sam gasped. DD had been listening to her and Kyle.

“And this morning she’s gone. I’ve looked everywhere. I’ve asked the neighbors. I called the bus line to see if she got on. They’re checking but that could take a while. Then I thought she might have tried to find you.” She started sobbing.

She blinked back tears and swallowed a few times before she asked, “is there any way she went in search of her real father?”

“Kyle’s her real father, Sam.”

“I meant biological.”

“I know damn well what you meant. Kyle’s her father, the other man doesn’t matter.”

“Well, obviously he does Shelley. Maybe you should have told her before now about your affair.”

“There was no god damn affair. I was raped!”

She gasped as all color drained out of her face. “Oh my god, Shelley. I’m sorry. Why didn’t you tell me?” As soon as she said it she realized she was the last person she’d tell. Emotions were clogging her throat but she managed to get out, “I’ll find her. I’ll find her. She’ll be okay. I know you don’t trust me but I promise I’ll bring her home to you.” She clicked off her cell phone. Shelley was beyond talking and she couldn’t take Shelley’s sobs, which sounded like an animal’s keening howl when she’d lost her young.

Always so brilliant Sam. Always so brilliant.

Concrete Evidence by Rachel Grant - Review Tour and giveaway

(ROMANTIC SUSPENSE)

This post is part of a Reviews Tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One lucky commenter on the CONCRETE EVIDENCE review tour will receive a very special deck of cards created by the Department of Defense and given to soldiers who were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007. The cards were designed to educate the troops about international laws that protect antiquities and the need to preserve and protect cultural heritage sites in the Middle East.

The trafficking of Iraqi artifacts is part of the storyline in CONCRETE EVIDENCE, and the cards make an appearance in the book. More information on the cards is available at http://rachel-grant.net/ConcreteEvidence-BonusContent.html.

Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A year ago she lost everything. Now she wants revenge…

Accused of stealing artifacts from a five-hundred-year-old shipwreck, underwater archaeologist Erica Kesling is determined to clear her name. She’s concealed her past and taken a job certain to give her access to the buyer of the missing antiquities. She's finally closing in on her goal when she's distracted by a sexy, charismatic intern who makes her want something other than revenge.

But Lee Scott is no intern. He's looking for the lead conspirator in an international artifact smuggling scheme, and Erica is his prime suspect. He’ll do whatever it takes to win her trust and get her to reveal her secrets, even seduce her.

As Erica and Lee struggle to conceal their real agendas, the one thing they can’t hide is the attraction that burns hot between them. When Erica’s quest puts her life in jeopardy, Lee must choose between old loyalties and a woman he never expected to fall for.

Romantic suspense is one of my favorite subgenres, and I wasn't disappointed when I picked up Rachel Grant's Concrete Evidence. I especially liked the fact that this book is based, in part, on actual events. The author's notes about the "real" story were almost as interesting as the book itself.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the relationship between Erica and Lee... I loved seeing how this relationship developed, especially knowing who Lee was from the beginning.  It was fun watching Lee pretend to be less than he was---I think at times he really enjoyed seeing just how dumb he could play his part.

The main part of the story, however, is not overshadowed by the romance--nice balance there! I like a book where I can be caught off guard by a plot twist (that makes sense), and this book provides that aspect! All in all, a very nice debut and I'm definitely looking forward to her next book.

Now, enjoy an excerpt:

In the corridor heading toward their office, anxiety slowed Erica’s pace. She wasn’t sure if she was nervous about her upcoming confession to Janice or what she wanted to ask Lee, but she brushed her fear aside. “You know JT Talon,” she said, keeping her voice casual.

“We’ve met.”

“You know him better than that.”

He shrugged.

Dammit, she wanted to know how well he knew the man. “Do we have more nepotism?”

“Is it really nepotism when you’re given the lowest job with the lowest pay?” he asked.

“It is when you’re getting paid to play Tetris.”

“The Thermo-Con searches were boring.”

She turned on her heel to face him. He stopped just short of crashing into her, and she patted his cheek. “Poor baby,” she said in a sarcastic imitation of a motherly voice. “I’m sorry your work was so taxing. Maybe after you finish your computer game, you should take a nap.”

He covered her hand with his own, rubbing her palm against the stubble he hadn’t bothered to shave. His green eyes fixed on hers, and his mouth curved in an alluring half smile. “Only if you take one with me.”

She rolled her eyes. She’d give him grief for hitting on her again, but she was the one who’d stepped close and touched him. The air thickened as his intense gaze ensnared her. Gone was the feckless intern; in his place was a compelling man she wanted to know.

She heard footsteps, breaking the spell. She tried to pull her hand away, but Lee gripped her fingers tighter.

“Well, well, well,” a familiar voice said. “If it isn’t my favorite…Cream Puff.”

She ripped her hand from Lee’s and whipped around. The last time she’d seen Jake, she’d been locked in a stinking Mexican jail cell.

Review: A Legacy of Revenge by Harriet Schultz

(Full Length Contemporary romantic suspense)

When a fourteenth-century Scottish oath leads to murder in present-day Boston, the victim's devastated widow seeks revenge. Determined to find and punish the person who killed her husband Will, Alexandra Cameron joins forces with his best friend, Diego Navarro.

The handsome, wealthy and powerful Argentine never expected to win Alex’s heart, yet two years after the senseless killing, their love blazes with heat and passion. Their bliss is threatened by a Scotsman who blames the couple for the death of his son — Will Cameron’s murderer. The ruthless predator targets Alex and forces the deadly game of revenge into its next round.

This is the second book in the series. I read the first book, Legacy of the Highlands, and absolutely loved it. I wasn't certain that this second book could live up to the first. Well, I was wrong to be concerned. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this second in the series, but if you get the chance, grab it -- it'll be a great read and make your enjoyment of this book much richer.

In this second book, It has been two years since Will Cameron’s body was discovered in a Boston alley, and his widow, Alexandra, now living in Boston, has become very close to Will's best friend, Diego Navarro.

I had forgotten a few details of the first book, but this author very cleverly included facts that made certain that you were never at a loss for what was going on.

This story, like the first, jumped into high gear almost immediately. I didn't want to put it down, but I had to once in a while, just to catch my breath. This book has a lot of twists and turns. This author has a magical way with words, she keeps you on your toes the entire book.

Again, there is a beautiful love story. It had plenty of heat, but the emotions were primary to the relationship. And the love story fit in so well that you could see that it was a very important portion of the whole plot in this tale. Without it, the story wouldn't have worked. I know that I said this about the first book, but it is so important to this book also, that I have to mention it.

I didn't know that there would be more to write about after the first book, but there is plenty going on. This is so important and exciting and I can't believe that I didn't realize that there was more to know after reading the first book.

I really don't know what more to say. If you are looking for an awesome romantic suspense, this is the book for you. I can not remember when I have read a book that was so intense before. This author is one of the best I have discovered in years. You don't want to miss reading this book.

5 Flowers - I loved this book! It's on my keeper shelf! I highly recommend it.

Kill Shot by Anne Patrick - Virtual Book Tour and Giveaway

Today author Anne Patrick visits on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for the romantic suspense novel, "Kill Shot".

Anne will be awarding a $50 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so leave a comment today and follow the rest of her tour by clicking on the banner above.

Former combat medic Kory Wagner survived four war zones. Now she’s home and out of the Army for good and someone is trying to kill her in her own backyard. Just as disturbing is the handsome sheriff who’s on the case. Sheriff Sean Harding doesn’t quite know what to think of the decorated veteran that managed to outsmart an entire search party. What bothers him more is the body of a PI, whom she hired, was found dead in a building she owns. And Kory isn’t being very cooperative with helping him find the answers as to why someone would kill her sister and want her dead. Will he be able to keep her alive along enough to discover the truth?

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Sean followed the trail of blood to the back of the warehouse. She had definitely been hit -- question was how bad? Was she the one who called in the shooting? If so he didn't blame her for not sticking around, not when someone was trying to kill her. He was surprised she called the police at all.

He stepped out into the late afternoon sunlight. The last traces of blood were found halfway between the building and the edge of the woods. There wasn't any skid marks in the side parking lot indicating a hasty retreat, and there were no casings. Did the shooter have an accomplice waiting at the back door just in case, or did she manage to escape into the woods?

Deputy McKee joined Sean at the edge of the woods. "Find anything?"

"No. The blood trail ends over there. Judging from the distance between droplets she was running at a pretty good pace."

"There's only one car in the parking lot. Do you think they came together, or did she park back here?"

"They either came together or she came in soon after he did thru the front door. The trajectory of the bullets suggests she was near the front of the building when she was hit and exited through the back door."

"So she either managed to make it back to her car near the front of the building or she's on foot," the deputy said.

Sean looked toward the tree line. "If I were her and I had someone shooting at me I'd head for the woods. More places to hide than on a highway. Assemble a search team and have them start looking just in case. And notify the local hospital to be on the lookout for her. If she comes in I want her held for questioning."

Anne Patrick is the author of more than a dozen novels of Romance, Mayhem & Faith, including the award winning and bestselling WOUNDED HEROES SERIES, FIRE AND ASH, and TIES THAT BIND. Her books have garnered four-star reviews from Romantic Times, 'Top Pick' and 'Best Book' honors from Night Owl Reviews and Long and Short of It Reviews, and Five-Heart reviews from The Romance Studio. When she isn't working on her next novel she enjoys spending time with family and friends, and traveling to foreign countries to experience new cultures and adventures. Born and raised in Oklahoma, she now makes her home in Kansas.

Speak No Evil by Tanya Anne Crosby - Review tour and giveaway

(Full length, romantic suspense)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual tour with Goddess Fish Promotions.

Tanya will be awarding a $50 Amazon or Nook gift card (winner's choice) to a randomly drawn commenter during both this and the Kissed Tour via the Rafflecopter form at the end of this post.

Lifting the veil of secrecy on a grand Southern family in decline, author Tanya Anne Crosby explores the lives of Caroline, Augusta, and Savannah Aldridge, three sisters who share a dark past and an uncertain future…

Caroline Aldridge was surprised by the number of mourners at her mother’s funeral. Evidently the newspaper heiress who had caused her children so much pain was well-loved by everyone else in Charleston. Now she was gone, leaving behind countless secrets—and a few demands: Caroline and her sisters must live together for one year or lose their inheritance. And Caroline must take over The Tribune. But a killer is making headlines, and Caroline may have unwittingly stepped into the crosshairs…

A series of kidnappings and murders resurrect the sisters’ memories of their brother’s disappearance as a child—and Caroline fears she may be next. Yet in the midst of her turmoil, she may be rekindling a romance she’d extinguished long ago. With Jack back in her life and the tattered bonds of sisterhood slowly mending, Caroline hopes the family can restore its position in Charleston society—unless a sinister force beyond their control tears them apart forever…

Complex and full of details, Speak No Evil is an engaging suspense.

The author covers incredible amounts of ground in this book, building backstory (the sisters' dysfunctional life with their mother who never stopped mourning the loss of her son) , the relationship between Jack and Caroline, the disappearance of a young girl, Caroline's being thrust into power at her mother's newspaper, and a possible serial killer.  There's an insane amount of stuff happening here, and amazingly, the author manages to make it all relate.

Some of the story is a bit gruesome -- to be expected when there's a killer on the loose, and there are some very sad things that happen as well.  Characterization is important, and there are piles of secondary characters, well drawn, three dimensional characters, who are integral to the story.

All in all, this is a really good read.  Perhaps not as "edge of your seat" as I'd expected, due in large part to all the different storylines, but still fascinating and intriguing.  I really enjoyed it.

Rated 4 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“Jack!” she whispered frantically, “Come back—please come back!”

Jack’s heart tripped. Those were words he’d been waiting to hear for years, but something in her tone told him that it wasn’t for the reason he hoped. Thankfully, he hadn’t gone very far, and even as he asked, he turned the car around. “Is everything OK, Caroline?”

“No!” The single word was filled with panic, and the tightness in Jack’s chest intensified.

“Caroline, what’s wrong?”

“Someone’s here…”

Wedging the phone between his face and his shoulder, Jack turned on his siren lights. “Stay on the phone, Caroline!” he demanded and radioed for backup, stepping on the gas.

Caroline crouched by her mother’s desk with the phone clasped to her ear. She’d gone straight to the phone, intending to call the police and her fingers automatically dialed Jack’s old number. She hadn’t even realized she still remembered.

“Hurry, Jack!” she whispered.
