Racing the Dream by M.T. Bass

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. M.T. Bass will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Thank you for visiting It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I don’t read in only one genre, so why should I only write in one? That would be boring. What’s most important to me is the story and sometimes it’s an adventure tale (Somethin’ for Nothin’), and sometimes it’s a dark humor satire (In the Black). Sometimes it’s a Romance (like Lodging) and sometimes it’s a Sci-Fi Serial Killer Murder Mystery (Like the Murder by Munchausen). Scenes and characters just percolate up into my brain and I go with them—wherever they take me. And that keeps it interesting for me, too.

What research or world-building is required?

Whether it’s fantasy, Sci-Fi, or twentieth-century air racing, a writer needs to get the world-building right for the story. Although only small bits of it get into my stories, I do a ton of research for my books, whether it’s murder investigations and AI/Robotics for the Murder by Munchausen stories or air racing and wing-walking for Racing the Dream. I guess it would be easier if I only worked with things in my own wheelhouse, but that’s a pretty shallow pool. A good friend of mine, author Jay Spencer Green (Breakfast at Cannibal Joes), said that it’s not about writing what you know, but knowing what you are writing about.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

As a Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor, I know a lot about what goes on in the cockpit of an airplane. But Allison taught me a whole bunch about what it means to step out from behind the stick and climb out up top to do a wing-walking routine. And it’s kind of crazy.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I never finish a novel. I finally just abandon them into the eBook and print world, because I’m a constant re-writer. I’m always tweaking my manuscript—even five or ten years after a book’s been published. I just can’t stop.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Definitely a pantser. I get started and never really know where the story is going to end up. I was eighty percent done with Somethin’ for Nothin’, but I didn’t have an ending. Then one morning it came to me and I think it’s the best ending in all my books. There was one time, because there were so many characters in my satire, In the Black, that a plot outline was definitely needed. So, I spent weeks and weeks working out all the timelines and actions in a spreadsheet. But when I started writing it out, the characters simply refused to cooperate and it was better that they had their own way. So I gave up altogether on the plotting thing.

Look to your left – what’s sitting there?

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m working on a sequel to Article 15, which follows ex-Navy SEAL and legal troubleshooter Griff as he helps Country-Western singer Samantha Cross deal with a stalker. I’ve also got an idea for Hawk and Allison going to Costa Rica to fly crop dusters in the war on drugs. With more to follow…

Do you have a question for our readers?

I’d like to know how many folks actually read paperback or printed books and how many readers use Kindle Unlimited. Thanks.

“If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough.” ~Mario Andretti

Strap down the 5-point harness in the cockpit of a Formula 1 air racing plane and join Hawk as he chases victory! First on their amateur make-shift course over Antelope Acres, then on the re-emerging pylon racing circuit in the early 1960s. And finally, as Hawk battles 7 other top-level pilots at the very first National Air Racing Championship event in Reno!

Abandoning the cloth and his African mission, Father Bob returns to his slide rule to design Hawk’s racer. Sparks, his loyal yet surly mechanic, built it and wrenching both on the engine—as well as on Hawk—keeps them at the front of the pack. Home again in Los Angeles from behind the stick of a T-6 Texan as a mercenary in the Congo civil war, air racing is a new aviation adventure for Hawk. Ride along as he tangles with fellow pilots in “uncooperative formation flying” at two-hundred miles per hour a mere fifty feet off the ground!

And then one day cruising home to Van Nuys airport, Hawk spies Allison, a beach-blonde surfer girl, insanely wing walking on the top wing of a Stearman PT-17 bi-plane. He quickly sets his sights on her.

Fly low…Fly fast…and Turn Left…

Read an Excerpt:

Allison kicked off her shoes and dropped them in the car. I stripped off my jacket and left it, then we wound our way around the Albatross to the waterfront where she skipped ahead and waded into the surf.

Staring out to sea, she took a deep breath. “You’ve got to love it. It’s the law.”

“Well, I’m kind of a desperado.”

Allison spun around to kick water at me, then started walking north.

I followed along just outside the retreating waves.

“Sure, sure—a desperado. Well, don’t make me walk out here all by myself.”

“But—”

“But nothing.”

So I slipped off my shoes and socks, then rolled up my pants legs. She didn’t stop. “Hey, wait for me.”

Allison ran ahead, stopped, then turned to face me.

“I’m beginning to think that you’re the one who’s an outlaw,” I said walking up to her. “A real Black Rebel.”

“Maybe…”

“So, what are you rebelling against?” I asked.

“Whadda ya got?”

I looked her in the eyes and smiled.

“Well, then, don’t wait too long.”

I leaned in and we kissed, softly. Then more passionately as I took her in my arms.

“Mmmm…” she moaned sweetly, then put her head against my chest. “Come on.”

She took my hand and we walked north through the moonlit surf.

I watched her looking out to sea. “What are you doing?”

“Oh, nothing,” she sighed. “Just counting waves.”

“Why?”

“Force of habit. It’s what you do in the lineup.”

“The lineup?” I asked.

“Uh-huh. When you’re surfing.”

“Oh, no. Don’t tell me you’re a surfer girl.”

Allison began to sing The Beach Boys song: “Do you love me, do you, surfer girl? Surfer girl surfer girl.”

“Seriously?”

I stopped walking, but she pulled me along. “Everything’s a song.”

“Aye-Yi-Yi,” I moaned.

“And, you know, it does make sense—considering my job and all.”

I thought about it a bit. “Yeah…I suppose. A surfboard is kind of like a wing. And how long have you been doing that?”

“Before I started flying. I learned in Hawaii when Dad was based at Hickam. I think I might have been twelve. And, of course, there are great waves up north when I went to Stanford. It gets in your blood. You’re not fighting gravity, you know? You are riding a wall of green that some storm has thrown at you from way out at sea. And some of them get pretty big and mean and, man, you are racing for your life with the wind blasting in your face as the wave crests over your head. You’re scared, but your juices are flowing like crazy, too.”

“Sounds wild.”

“Yeah. Yeah, it is. Some say it’s better than sex.”

“You?”

She smiled at me. “Haven’t decided, yet.”

“Right…and you surf here?”

“Up north past the Malibu pier, at Surf Rider Beach. And Zuma Beach and County Line.”

“Well, what do you know: flying, philosophy, and surfing.”

“I do lead a full life.”

I looked out at the waves, then back at her. “So you do.”

We walked another half-mile north, then turned back south towards the Albatross, got in the car, and drove back to Hollywood.

When I walked her to her apartment door, we kissed again.

“Don’t wait so long to call, again,” Allison said as she slipped inside. Before she closed the door, she looked back at me. “Who knows, one of these days you just might get lucky.”

1. Although I am a Commercial Pilot and a Certified Flight Instructor, I am afraid of heights. Or, maybe as my brother-in-law Tom says, I’m actually afraid of falling. I don’t feel that way in an airplane cockpit. There’s a huge difference to me between altitude and heights. I just don’t think about it there.

2. I spent a lot of years doing computer programming, designing business CRM (Customer Relationship Management) projects, and a golfer’s statistical tracking system. I inadvertently prepared for it by studying Philosophy in college. Little did I know how important that class in logic—and all the ORs, ANDs, IFs, THENs, and THEREFOREs I had to sort out—would be for putting together computer machine language arguments.

3. After college I wanted to learn how to do a professional recording of our band, so I apprenticed at a local recording studio. This was in the now by-gone era of magnetic tape, head degaussers, and editing with grease pencils and razor blades. To teach that to us, I found this old assignment given to me and my buddy Kevin to put together a 10 minute (exactly!) audio montage which had to include: 1) an atomic bomb explosion; 2) the sound of a race car; 3) Knute Rockne: https://soundcloud.com/electron-alley/who-is-harry-truman-audio-montage

4. I’ve played 788 live music gigs with Project Mojo and well over a 1,000 total since I started playing guitar at 16 years old.

5. The fastest I have ever driven is 118 MPH on Interstate 70

Sweating it out in the former Belgian Congo as a civil war mercenary, with Sparks turning wrenches on his T-6 Texan, Hawk splits his time flying combat missions and, back on the ground, sparring with Ella, an attractive young missionary doctor, in the sequel to My Brother’s Keeper.

“Eric.”

He looked at me.

“What is wrong?”

“Do you know what they did?”

“Who is they?”

“The Simbas. Up north. In Stanleyville.”

I shook my head.

He nodded his head quickly up and down. “You would not think that—you know, the cruelty of it all.”

“What did they do?”

“Well, you know they have several hundred prisoners up there and they are threatening to kill them all if the government forces come.”

“And we’re going, right?”

“Oh, yes. Oh, yes. You will hear about it tomorrow.”

“But what did they do?” I asked.

“The Simbas? They are—“ He stood up.

“Eric.” I stood up and grabbed his shoulder. “What is going on?”

Eric slowly sat back down. “It was the mayor.”

“And?”

“And the mayor there, Bond…Bondess…Bondekwe or something. I don’t know, but they stripped him down completely naked and stood him up in front of a mad, mad crowd of rebels.”

I waited. “And?”

Eric shook his head.

“And?”

“And they carved his liver out—while he was still alive.”

I could feel my face squint in repulsion.

“Yes, while he was still alive.”

“Alive?”

“Then they cut it up while it was still hot and—and—and they ate it in front of him as he died.”

I sat down at the end of my cot. “Jesus.”

“Yes, damn it—Jesus Christ, already. Yes, right in front of him. While he watched them and died…”

Murder by Munchausen by M.T. Bass

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Well, here’s the problem: I don’t write in a genre. I get ideas for characters or plot lines and just go with it. When I’m done, I have to figure out what the heck I’ve got with my manuscript. Sometimes it ends up being a Mystery or a Spy Thriller or a Satire or a Romance or a Sci-Fi/Police Procedural/Serial Killer Murder Mystery/Tech Thriller—like the Murder by Munchausen Trilogy. And you know what? I don’t read in only one genre, so why should I only write in one? And that keeps it interesting for me, too.

What research is required?

Sometimes it seems like I am doing as much research as I am pounding out words of my manuscripts. You definitely have to have information on your setting—whether that’s the Alaska pipeline, San Francisco, Washington DC, or Cleveland, Ohio. You don’t always need to put in a lot of info, but you need to get it right. Then, there are all the different kinds of characters and their jobs, hobbies, and even their inner thoughts, good and bad. I guess it would be easier if I only worked with things in my own wheelhouse, but that’s a pretty shallow pool. A good friend of mine, author Jay Spencer Green, said that it’s not about writing what you know, but knowing what you are writing about.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Jake is already a lot like me. But Maddie…When I wrote The Darknet from her point-of-view, I had to really stretch myself to get a totally different world-view from her perspective.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I am much more of a re-writer than anything else. I only write the first draft once, but I go over it again and again and again. And again. I actually never finish a novel. I just get it to a point where I finally have to abandon it and put it into print.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Definitely a pantser. I get started and never really know where I’m going to end up. Even when I try to plan things out, the characters inevitably seem to have their own ideas. And it’s always better—more natural to do what they want for them and for the story.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

The sequel to my very first book, My Brother’s Keeper, will be coming out on October 22. It’s called Jungleland. I am working with a narrator named Kristi Alsip to record the audiobook of The Darknet and get it out early next year. I’m also about 25% done with Murder by Munchausen Book #4: Motherless Children. With more to follow…

A Cyber Crime Thriller Series: Notorious serial killers digitally resurrected to live & hunt again in hacked replicants, pursued by detectives of the Artificial Crimes Unit.

It sat on a bench outside the dormitory of nursing students, waiting with its kind’s infinite patience. Originally acquired and programmed for landscaping at the Cleveland Clinic, the synthoid was one of a brigade of units which had been hacked and Munchausened, then returned to their menial daily services to mankind to await the Baron’s call.

There was no adrenalin surge behind the extremely life-like facade of humanity when that call came. Data packets, sent scatter-shot through the Atlas Grid, coalesced at the location outside the Cole Eye Institute where the synthoid methodically trimmed and shaped the immaculate shrubbery around the building. To avoid Q’s metadata sniffing algorithms from detecting a download spike in the grid, the information came in digital sprinkles over the course of its human handler’s work shift, slowly building a malevolent intent to be executed that night. In the middle of the afternoon, the synthoid left the unfinished topiary to melt into the hospital shift change and disappeared.

Personality modules were a Gen-3 feature upgrade, which is why the earlier models were initially preferred. Swapping out a few IC chips and uploading hacked firmware was a relatively easy way to turn a quick buck with an automated contract killing. But evil innovates, too, and the same features that made synthoids even more human-like in their behavior also helped create robotic assassins which could better camouflage their malicious intents and evade the reach of the Artificial Crimes Unit by melting into and moving undetected through the humanity that surrounded them. For the Baron, it allowed for a greater measure of artistic expression in programming the synthoid’s behavior to not only recreate infamous crimes of the past but to mimic the behavior of their perpetrators, which intensified the thrill of watching the video feed through the eyes of Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy or, this particular evening, Richard Speck. Jake wasn’t the only history buff, and it amused Jamal that London police had photographed the eyes of Jack the Ripper’s victims, hoping to capture the last thing they ever saw: their killer’s face. If only Scotland Yard could have imagined the future…

Murder by Munchausen by M.T. Bass

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.
A police procedural sci fi thriller ripped from future headlines!

After Jake shoots and kills a murder suspect who turns out to be the son of a powerful city councilman, he finds himself demoted to the Artificial Crimes Unit, tracking down androids hacked and programmed to be hit men.

When his case of an “extra-judicial” divorce settlement takes a nasty turn with DNA from a hundred-year-old murder in Boston and a signature that harkens back to the very first serial killer ever in London, Jake finds himself tangled up in the brutal slayings of prostitutes being investigated by his former Robbery/Homicide partner, Maddie–who is now his lover.

But a madman, The Baron, is just getting started with his AI recreations of Jack the Ripper's brutal crimes. And Maddie and Jake are teamed up again to stop the carnage as the Baron's army of human replicants imitate history's most notorious serial killers.

"It might not make sense, but the beloved Media tags it 'Murder by Munchausen.' For a price, there are hackers out there who will reprogram a synthoid to do your dirty work. The bad news: no fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scene. The good news—at least for us—is that they’re like missiles: once they hit their target, they’re usually as harmless as empty brass. The trick is to get them before they melt down their core OS data, so you can get the unit into forensics for analysis and, hopefully, an arrest." [excerpt from Murder by Munchausen]

Artificial Intelligence? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Artificial Evil has a name…Munchausen.

From The Invisible Mind (#3)

It sat on a bench outside the dormitory of nursing students, waiting with its kind’s infinite patience. Originally acquired and programmed for landscaping at the Cleveland Clinic, the synthoid was one of a brigade of units which had been hacked and Munchausened, then returned to their menial daily services to mankind to await the Baron’s call.

There was no adrenalin surge behind the extremely life-like facade of humanity when that call came. Data packets, sent scatter-shot through the Atlas Grid, coalesced at the location outside the Cole Eye Institute, where it methodically trimmed and shaped the immaculate shrubbery around the building. To avoid Q’s metadata sniffing algorithms from detecting a download spike in the grid, the information came in digital sprinkles over the course of its human handler’s work shift, slowly building a malevolent intent to be executed that night. In the middle of the afternoon, it left the topiary unfinished to melt into the hospital shift change and disappeared.

For the Baron, it allowed for a greater measure of artistic expression in programming the synthoid’s behavior to not only recreate infamous crimes of the past, but to mimic the behavior of their perpetrators, which intensified the thrill of watching the video feed through the eyes of Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy or, this particular evening, Richard Speck. Jake wasn’t the only history buff and it amused Jamal that London police had photographed the eyes of Jack the Ripper’s victims, hoping to capture the last thing they ever saw: their killer’s face. If only Scotland Yard could have imagined the future.

The Gen-3 personality modules also supported the ANSI Adaptive Artificial Intelligence Protocol #9 to enhance the artificial human experience of real men and women who interacted with synthoids. The constant writing and rewriting of code in the personality/experience loop formed unique individual synthoid consciousnesses, which manufacturers uploaded to their servers for product improvement teams to study. In Munchausened units, that feed was hijacked and routed to another portal in the Darknet to build a collective id of evil.

At eleven PM, it rose from the bench and entered the dormitory. The bodies of nine women would be found the next day, having been strangled and stabbed to death. Unlike 1966, no eyewitness was left alive, though the phrase "Born to Raise Hell" was written on the wall in blood.
