Ben wants Laura to reconsider staying overnight at Demon’s Grotto, and he has information about the club’s history that should convince her. He tells her three creepy love stories, hoping she will change her mind.

Rise of the Creature: When a mad doctor brings a dead man back to life, only his beautiful assistant can make that life worth living.

The Demon Within: A man on the run stops to rest at a rooming house, not knowing that it’s the hunting ground of a gorgeous succubus bent on devouring handsome guests.

Don’t Cry, Wolf: An ad for a maintenance man at a bed and breakfast is answered by a former soldier who’s harboring a hairy secret. The business’s lovely co-owner becomes involved with this sullen hunk who’s more than she imagined possible.

After hearing these stories of love and murder, will Laura decide to spend the night at Demon’s Grotto?

“I got it!” Gabby said, dancing toward the door. She spun a few times and opened it.

Declan stood outside. Holly’s breathing quickened and she couldn’t keep from smiling.

“It’s our maintenance engineer. Declan, baby, come on in.” Gabby grasped his wrist and pulled.

His brow furrowed and he looked uncomfortable as he tugged away from her.

Holly quickly intervened, stepping between Declan and her friend. “Ignore Gabby. She’s had a few.”

Holly couldn’t help noticing that Declan had changed his clothes and by the dampness of his hair, showered. They were close enough that she caught the scent of his soap as well as a mint aroma -- like he’d just brushed his teeth. She couldn’t help smiling. At least her cigarette discussion had gotten to him. It was advice she’d received from her mother when she’d tried smoking as a kid. Apparently the threat of no kissing worked as well on a thirty-two-year-old man as it did on a teenage girl.

“Are you here for the party or because we’re disturbing you with too much noise?” Holly asked.

“If I’m still invited, I’m here for the party, but if I’m not on the guest list anymore, then I’m here about the noise.”

Again Holly laughed. “I’m learning a lot about you tonight, Declan. You have a sense of humor after all.”

Holly’s father approached. He was nearly as tall as Declan and could be just as stern. “Honey, who’s this?” her dad asked.

“This is Declan. The maintenance guy I told you about. Declan, this is my dad.”

“Sir.” Declan offered his hand.

Her dad stared at him hard for a moment before accepting his handshake. “My daughter tells me you’re a good worker and that you helped her on the first night you met. Thank you for that. Her mother and I worry about her a lot. Two women living alone in the city. It can be dangerous.”

“As long as I’m here, I’ll keep them safe.”

“Excuse me, gentlemen, but I’m right here,” Holly said, annoyed. “And I don’t need a guard dog.”

“Looks to me like you’ve got one anyway,” her dad said, still holding Declan’s gaze. “She also tells me you served in the military?”

“Yes, sir.”

“What branch?”

“Army.”

Holly remembered that Declan preferred not to talk about his time in the service. “Dad, I want to introduce Declan to everybody else.”

“Okay, honey. Your mother and sisters are already on their way over here. Good luck.” Her dad raised an eyebrow in Declan’s direction before walking away.

Holly’s mom and sisters weren’t interested in grilling Declan about his past, but preferred to concentrate on his plans for the future. It was pretty embarrassing, so she pulled him away as quickly as possible.

“I’m sorry about my family,” she explained. “It almost seems like they think you’re my boyfriend or something.”

“Don’t apologize. You’re lucky to have a family who cares about you. I haven’t…” He stopped abruptly.

“What?”

    1. Hi Bernie! I'm not sure. Books usually change a lot when they're adapted for other mediums.
