"Put your hands up."

Shyla shrieked. Damien lifted his hands. He turned, pushing Shyla behind him, as he faced Carl. Only he wasn't there. Searching the area, he scanned for where the man could have gone.

"Let's get out of here."

Shyla's whisper was exactly what he'd been thinking, but he needed this man and wasn't ready to admit defeat. He wanted to best his father. It wasn't healthy what he was feeling, but it was a burning need in his gut. He had to take him down and he had to take him down in his fashion.

Suddenly, the man was there, standing about ten feet away, pointing a rifle at them. He looked like a hobbit, like Bilbo Baggins. The man hadn't changed in almost twenty years. He was short and thick and had white hair like Einstein, it stuck straight out from under a black ballcap.

Shyla's fingers dug into Damien's shoulder.

Damien kept his hands up. "I swear I am not here to hurt you. Or screw you over. I'm supposed to steal some jewels for him tomorrow night. Meaning, he is going to steal them tonight and turn me into the police tomorrow night."

Shyla's gasp was a cold jolt. He winced but didn't break eye contact with Carl.

"Come on." Carl turned and disappeared into the brush.

Damien grabbed Shyla's hand and hustled after him. After taking a few twists and turns and doing maneuvers to avoid the blackberry bushes, they found themselves standing in front of an open door.
