This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Nina will be awarding a digital copy of Dalir's Salvation to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

To be with the man of her dreams, she’ll have to face her worst nightmares…

Ari is looking to live a normal life. But after she hits her head, normal is no longer an option. A mysterious, rugged man appears, whom only she can see… each night he fulfills her fantasies and leaves her begging for more. She’s sure he’s a figment of her imagination—until she finds out the hard way that he’s all too real. Now, to truly be with him, Ari will have to embrace the parts of herself she’s been desperately keeping at bay.

Dalir’s been burned by love before, yet he can’t resist Ari’s beauty and charm. And all it takes is one kiss to spark nights of passion. But there’s danger on the horizon that only Dalir and his friends in the band Thane’s Redemption can deal with. And the longer he stays with Ari, the greater the peril to them both. Will the two of them be strong enough to fight for their newfound love—and their lives?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Four weeks ago, he’d fought Kell and nicked his brother’s throat, but Kell had leaped time and escaped before he could finish him. He would have pursued him, but Reid’s injuries couldn’t wait. Time in nothingness had weakened Kell’s phasing and fighting skills. His brother wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. Kell wouldn’t show his face until his powers and fighting skills reached full potential.

Colby’s green eyes grew cold with a hard expression. “Don’t worry we’ll find him.”

“When are you reporting back?”

“Later tonight. After New Jersey, I’m tracking down Ari.” Colby answered Dalir’s questioning look with a chuckle. “You know who she is, Celine and Lauren’s friend.”

Right. Celine and Lauren had agonized over leaving her behind in Florida. His decision not to bring Ari to The Drift hadn’t gone over well. Lauren and Celine had a reason to occupy his home. Ari, a grown woman capable of taking care of herself, didn’t. First they’d want one friend to live with them in The Drift. Then another. He wasn’t a damn innkeeper.

Just like their little redecorating project, the list of people they would have wanted at The Drift would have gone on forever. “What about Ari?” “We’re taking turns checking in on her so the girls won’t worry so much.” An electric saw buzzed to life downstairs.

Dalir’s jaw ached from his gritted teeth. He could camp in the mountains or go to his place near the lake. Or he could let Colby do the job the recon expert did best. Hunt for leads.

“I’ll check on Ari.”

Colby rubbed the stubble on his jawline. “I was just going to pop in where she works, make visual confirmation that she’s okay, and move out. I can handle it.”

“Focus on finding my brother. I’ll take care of this side errand.”

Dalir stalked back to his room to change clothes. “It’s time to bring this to an end.”

Review: Sonar the Surge by B. Truly

This review is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Eclipsed by darkness, the Romelands must face the ultimate quest. If they are forced toward the umbra peak, they will be completely obscured.

Symone struggles with her most challenging battles … the conflict within herself. Losing loved ones steals part of her soul. Despair has created a gaping hole where her heart should be. Symone doesn’t even recognize herself. She has to determine if this is the person she’s turned into, or if it is who she has always been.

Nile is an attractive aristocrat whose charm and arrogance drives Symone insane. Beyond Symone’s control, Nile is spun into her life. But she’s not sure if she can have a relationship with him or where that could lead her. Embracing love could make her whole again, but it may also destroy her. Symone must travel through the opaque light in order to find where her destiny lies.

Symone’s family, Shiray and Syira, continue to fight in the feuds of their galaxy. Together they have to find the balance between compassion and sacrifice. Kadanans are being held captive, and they hold the fate of their world in their hands. They have only begun to understand the consequences of the devastating realities of war.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, is the philosophy the Romelands now abide by. With chaos and turmoil at every corner, they may forget what is worth fighting for. The surge for power has erupted. Only the strongest race will be left standing.

Review:

This was an interesting book; however, I had a little trouble figuring out exactly what was going on. This is the third, and finally, book in the series and I'm sure if I had read the first two books I would have had an easier time.

The book consists of several love stories-- couples who may (or may not) end up together. There are also some battle scenes and a lot of action involved in the story.

There was a little bit of difficulty getting deeply involved with the characters--- it may be because I've not read the first two and, so, do not really know the background of the story, or it might be that there is a lot of showing not telling in the story. We are told a lot about how the characters feel, but I did not actually feel it along with them.

Even with that slight issue, I think this book would be very enjoyable for older YA or New Adult readers. Many YA readers are fond of graphic novels, and this story reads like this to me. 4 stars. Read an excerpt:

* * * Symone * * *

Several days passed since I had told Nile about Amere. I’d been majorly pouting with Nile’s no touching rules. I wanted to just say screw it and throw him against the wall. But when I contemplated us being together, it made my heart ache. I don’t know why I thought if I kept him at a distance, it would keep him safe.

Cessar yanked me from my reverie. I jumped. I was in the casual dining area after dinner. He leaned against the bar table I was sitting at.

“Cessar, you scared me.”

“Sorry.” His chocolate eyes beamed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’ve been wanting to talk to you.”

“Okay, go on.”

He scanned the room. A few other Kadanans were eating and making idle chit-chat. “Can we go somewhere more private? What I want to discuss is personal.”

“Sure.” My heart pounded as I followed him into one of the living rooms. He closed the door, then came over to where I was standing.”

“What’s going on, Cessar?”

“Symone, I thought we had a connection. We get along great.”

“We do have a connection. I enjoy your friendship.”

“I want us to be more. I know you have been hanging with Nile. I needed you to know how I felt before it was too late. Are you and he already courting?”

“No, we’re not together officially. But I’m not going to lie. We have been spending a lot of time with each other.”

“I’ve known Nile for a while. He’s a womanizer.”

“I know Nile also, and there’s another side to him.”

“I would like for you to consider us getting together. I really care about you.”

He grabbed my hand and leaned in closer. I backed up slightly, but I couldn’t go any farther because I was against the fireplace. My stomach tightened. I couldn’t pretend anymore. I had strong feelings for Nile.

“Cessar, you’re a really great guy … I just don’t think we can be anything more than friends.”

The door whirled open. Nile walked in, took one look at us, and lost it. I quickly pulled my hand from Cessar but could only imagine what we looked like backed into a corner.

“What the hell is going on!”

Five Things You Probably Don't Know About Kit Campbell

First of all, thanks for having me! Well, and Siri, but she’s not writing this so she’s mostly here in spirit (and probably in the comments). Let’s see—five things you probably wouldn’t guess about me.

1. I did a short stint as a rider for Westernaires, which is a trick-riding group in Colorado. There was a wait list a mile long to get in, so I guess my mother stuck us on it, just in case it was something we wanted to do at some point in our lives. So now I can say that I have galloped across an arena on a horse (not on purpose) and my sister can say that she’s held on to a bucking horse long enough to place pretty decently in a rodeo (also not on purpose). It was an interesting experience, but I learned that I was not really a horse person and trick riding was so not my thing. Also, horses are jerks.

2. Along with strange stints I did when I was younger, I was also a model for JCPenney as a teenager. I’m not sure how that happened exactly. My parents signed us up for weird things. I got to do the catwalk in a fashion show and everything. Bet you didn’t know JCPenney even did fashion shows. Neither did I.

3. Once, in college, I tripped going up the stairs. Well, I mean, I probably tripped up the stairs more than once, but on this particular occasion my shoe fell off, and instead of falling down the stairs, as one would expect, my shoe flew up and hit me in the head. Be clumsy enough, and you too can break the laws of physics. Of course, someone I knew was right behind me and saw the whole thing, so there’s something I’ve never lived down.

4. We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon, and on our last day, we decided to rent some snorkels and go snorkeling in the bay next to our hotel, which happened to have a pretty nice coral reef in it. At one point this little fish, maybe 8 or 9 inches long, gets in my face. I was like, “Pssh, what are you going to do, dude? I could eat you for dinner.” And this fish swims around me and BITES ME IN THE LEG. This was a bite bite too—broke the skin, bled, welted up and bruised. When I went to the lifeguard to make sure there were no venomous fish I should be worried about, he said, “Oh! You’re the third person that fish has bitten today!” It was 9:30 in the morning. I later learned that it was a humuhumunukunukuapua’a, which is the state fish of Hawaii. Guess Hawaii felt it was time for us to go home too.

5. When I was 8 or 9, my cousins (all younger than me) and I were hanging out at my grandparents, and we saw some spotlights in the sky. None of us knew what they were, but I decided to tell my cousins that it was a UFO come to abduct us. They ran inside, presumably to tell their parents, and I decided to hide so they’d think I’d been abducted. I hid for at least an hour. My cousins were terrified. I got in a ton of trouble, but I still think it was probably worth it.

Thanks again for having us, and I hope you guys pick up City of Hope and Ruin and give it a try! Siri and I also have two related short stories up over at Turtleduck Press which you can read for free! So what are you waiting for?

Every night the monsters hunt.

A city that is the whole world: Theosophy and her companions in the City militia do their best to protect the civilians from the monsters, but they keep crawling from the Rift and there’s nowhere to run. Theosophy knows she’ll die fighting. It’s the best kind of death she’s seen, and at least she can save lives in the meantime.

They say the Scarred carve you up while you’re still alive.

A village in the shadow of a forest: Refugees from the border whisper about the oncoming Scarred, but Briony can’t convince her brother to relocate his children to safety. Briony will do anything to protect them. She owes them that much, even if it means turning to forbidden magic.

When Theosophy and Briony accidentally make contact across the boundaries of their worlds, they realize that solutions might finally be within reach. A world beyond the City would give Theosophy’s people an escape, and the City’s warriors could help Briony protect her family from the Scarred. Each woman sees in the other a strength she lacks—and maybe something more.

All they need to do is find a way across the dimensions to each other before their enemies close in.

Read an excerpt:

The spirit was beautiful, a tall, statuesque woman who had a hard glint in her eyes. Her hair was short, indigo blue through the glow and tightly curled, her skin a lighter shade over wiry muscles. One hand clenched a smallish item made of metal, the other a long tube with some kind of blade on the end. Briony had never seen anyone like her. Though she glanced around and held her body like someone expecting danger, her bearing was proud and strong, and every inch of her spoke of power and competency. A warrior. Briony had heard stories of them, left over from the Great War, but had never seen one herself.

Was that when this woman was from? The War?

“The trio—the monsters—where am I?”

Briony realized she hadn’t responded, and that perhaps this spirit had been looking for someone to talk to for a very long time, and maybe she would assume Briony couldn’t see or hear her either. “Don’t be afraid,” she said.

The spirit's eyebrows rose. "That's a...never mind. What is this place?"

“Well,” Briony started, taking a step forward. But her ankle buckled and she stumbled, managing to catch herself before she fell.

“You’re injured,” said the spirit. “Were you attacked?”

“Yes—you see, there was a Fracture back there, and—” Confusion crossed the spirit’s face. Maybe she was even older; maybe she didn’t know about the War.

This is sometimes apparent in the way that she attempts to escape through tubes when startled.

Her transition to normalcy has been slow, but scientists predict that she will have mastered basics such as fork use sometime in the next year. More complex skills, such as proper grocery store etiquette, may be forever outside her reach.

Read an excerpt:

I focused on the shining figure standing next to the fountain. It looked like every ray in the sun was pointing at her and reflecting off her at the same time. That was until I realized that her long white skirt and scarf had tiny mirrors patched into the embroidery. She moved with grace despite the large pot balanced on her hip. She placed the pot on the ground. From within, she took many small silver bowls. Ten, to be exact. I counted as she placed them around the fountain, occasionally swiping the tiny broken stones gathered on its ridge. The strike of a match against the box cut through the air as if even the birds had decided to be silent out of respect for her. She lit each bowl. Who lit candles in the daylight? Was it some type of religious ceremony?

When she was done, she fell to her knees in front of the fountain and removed her scarf. Her hair cascaded in dark waves. A soft echoing music filled the air, the melody haunting. She looked toward the sky.

Whatever she prayed for, I wanted her to have it.

Her gaze drew back to the fountain.

“What’s so interesting?” I asked, as if she could answer me. I didn’t know what was so interesting for me either. I blamed it on a combination of sleep deprivation, curiosity, and bad bourbon.

Whatever it was, I couldn’t look away.

My name is Zoey Major and I live in Fort Star, New Jersey. I am also a survivor in the zombie apocalypse. Seems very cut and dry but I have been hiding something- like really huge. My secret is game changing. I am not like the others... I know, what a surprise twist! Unfortunately, I can’t tell you why I am different. If you really want to know, you have to figure it out. Hey, even in these dark times, a girl needs her secrets.

Read an excerpt:

United we... united we... we were supposed to stand together as a society but it did not work out like that. The United States and much of the world, actually went to sh*t for a little bit when the zombies came. Perhaps the only saving grace was the fact that man learns to adapt. We always do. A prime example would be the invention of the wheel, the television or even a toaster pastry because why the f*ck not eat something bad for you?

For you see, if man has a want or desire, it may take years, but he'll invent it. One thing I am still waiting on is that damn time machine. I am looking at you, Doc Brown. Ha! However, not all inventions should ever leave the paper. Sometimes an idea is just an idea as biological weapons rarely ever make anything better. Yeah, perhaps not every weapon should be tested or even used, as the results can't always be contained. United we... united we... we were supposed to stand together.

Present Day, June 30, 10:25 pm

Catey: "So is it cool that I sign you up for speed dating?"

Zoey: "What? No, f*ck no."

Catey: "Why not?"

Zoey: "There should be no speed dating in the zombie apocalypse."

Catey: "It's post apocalypse so get it right."

Zoey: "For now."

Catey: "And this is why you are single. You are so negative."

Zoey: "Huh, I didn't know that was the reason. I just thought it was because every eligible bachelor who isn't a toad has been either taken or eaten but hey, maybe I am wrong."

Catey: "I think it's because you put up a wall."

Zoey: "Stop analyzing me, or at the very least give me a Rorschach test or at the very least a crossword puzzle to pass the time then."

The General's Wife by Sara R. Turnquist - Spotlight and Giveaway

“Go home!” Ismene is speechless as she reads those words written in blood on the walls of her new home. The young, raven-haired Grecian beauty had traveled all the way from her homeland to marry the Pharaoh’s top general. But she never expected this. The hatred of the Alexandrian mob for their Greek rulers is right in front of her. It is the first of many threats she will receive.

Things are escalating out of control. Damaged crops and horses turned loose at night are one thing. But when Ismene receives a death threat, it becomes clear that there is a spy within her own household. She would turn to her husband to deal with this issue, except he left for battle by order of the Pharaoh. Not knowing whom to trust, she fears for her safety as well as the entire ruling class of Egypt.

Read an excerpt:

A din of whispered conversation among the servants could be heard, but only just. No one wanted to speak out for fear of enraging the general further. Many of the servants were unable to read Greek and had no idea what important message was scarred into their master's most prized sanctuary. As if the vandalism alone wasn't enough to evoke a great anger in him, the message itself had pushed him closer to the edge of violence. They had never seen their kind master in such a state.

“What is everybody...” Ismene's voice interrupted their musings. No one, not even Alistair, had even noticed that she had arrived at the grand estate, least of all made it all the way out to the gardens. Her voice, which started light and happy, trailed off as she noticed the source of everyone's fixation.

There were many audible gasps as the servants, like Alistair, turned and saw Ismene's paled face, her mouth moving as if trying to form words, though none came forth.

Alistair rushed over to her, “Ismene, don't look...it's...” he said, trying to turn her away, to go back in direction she had just come.

It was only then that he realized—the message—it was for her. Ismene and Alonah came to the gardens each day to check on her tiger lilies. This wall faced the entrance into the gardens closest to her bedchambers, the entrance she came through every day. How did anyone outside of his house and Pharaoh's know that? His heart sank. There was a leak in one of these houses.

“True Detective” meets H.P. Lovecraft in this chilling novel of murder, mystery, and slow-mounting dread from acclaimed author Mary SanGiovanni . . .

It begins with a freak snowstorm in May. Hit hardest is the rural town of Colby, Connecticut. Schools and businesses are closed, powerlines are down, and police detective Jack Glazier has found a body in the snow. It appears to be the victim of a bizarre ritual murder. It won’t be the last. As the snow piles up, so do the sacrifices. Cut off from the rest of the world, Glazier teams up with an occult crime specialist to uncover a secret society hiding in their midst.

The gods they worship are unthinkable. The powers they summon are unstoppable. And the things they will do to the good people of Colby are utterly, horribly unspeakable…

Enjoy an excerpt from Chills:

Still, most people believed this storm would be the last of them for the year, and patiently suffered the weather to exhale its arctic breath one last time over all. The town of Colby warmed up the snowplows and salt/sand trucks in preparation for winter’s last hur- rah, and the townsfolk swarmed the local supermarkets, the Targets and Walmarts, the Costcos and the gas stations, to stock up on gaso- line and supplies.

Most were still blissfully unaware of the body found hanging from a tree in Edison Park, but they felt it, in the vaguest, unarticulated way. They felt the cold trying to wrench their skin from their bones, and they felt something else, too—a kind of forlorn loneliness trying to wrench peace of mind from their souls. Just as they stocked up on food and bottled water, shovels and gloves, they squinted into the night outside their homes before drawing blinds and locking doors, double-checking on the kids in bed and huddling closer to each other than usual. Something other than a late winter was in the air, and it chilled them just as much, if not more, when they thought too long about it.

Though not even the gossips would give voice to it, the people of Colby knew something was coming with the snow.

The Last Ten Pounds by Lina Sage - Interview and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lina will be awarding a $20 azon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

This is the first book I’ve written and it happens to be my memoir. Never say never but I don’t think I have another memoir in me to write. My memoir, The Last Ten Pounds, started off as a personal project to help me process, deal with and heal from the emotional traumas from my past. It originally started off as nothing more than scribbled notes in my journal. Before long, it had filled an entire book. That’s when I realized that my personal project was so much more than journal entries. It was meant to be shared with the world and maybe along the way help to inspire people in their own personal struggles.

What research is required?

There is really no research to do when writing your own memoir. My only advice is to write from your heart. That’s the only way the reader can really connect with you. I knew that in order to connect with my readers, I had to be as transparent as possible. Throughout the book, readers will engage with my inner voice so whichever scenario I’m in, they’ll always know what I’m really thinking. It was so important to me that the reader be able to feel all the emotions I was feeling while going through all these events and the only way I could do that was to write it in a raw, honest and unfiltered way. There is beauty and power in truth. That’s why the whole genre of memoirs is so important because it speaks of someone’s truth and, in that truth, is where we all connect.

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

Since my book is a memoir, the heroine of the book would be myself. I’ve learned so much about myself since I first started my spiritual journey. The most important thing is to love oneself which seems simple enough to do. But the reality is most of us hate ourselves so when you break it down like that, then it’s not so simple. The hardest thing one can do is to take that first step into self-discovery and healing. It is the hardest journey you’ll ever have to take, but if you do, I promise the things you’ll uncover about yourself will be shocking and at the same time healing. What else is better than getting to know yourself completely? It’s the best and healthiest relationship one could ever have.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I don’t know about writing quirks but I must have my black tea with almond milk every time I sit down to write. I do have some superstitious tendencies. I hate the number 13 (I don’t know why) but I don’t let anything sit on that number. For example, the volume of the radio can’t ever sit on 13. I also believe bad luck comes in streaks of 3 before it disappears.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’ll be honest. I don’t really understand this question so I’ll just come up with my own assumption that a plotter means a planner and a pantser is a spontaneous person? Well I’ll just roll with this. I’m a total plotter. Organization is one of my strong suits and I like to plan things. I’ve learned with age to become more flexible as things don’t always work out as planned but that doesn’t mean I’m the type of person who wakes up one morning and decides to go bungee jumping.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

I wish I could say something interesting but unfortunately to my right is my printer. I know… boring.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m currently working on my second book. My second book is an extension of the last quarter of The Last Ten Pounds where I talk about the transformation process. My second book will go into further detail of how one can manifest and transform their life. It is a spiritual book/self-help book. I’m also actively writing on my blog called chicsage which is also a spiritual blog full of wisdom and insight for those who are searching.

Do you have a question for our readers?

I’ve started a movement called chic spirituality. The philosophy is to live your life with heightened awareness by surrounding yourself with things you deem beautiful. My question to the reader’s is, “what is your chic spirituality?” You can follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @chicsage and share with me what your chic spirituality is.

Shortly after I was born, my family left Vietnam’s strict Communist regime by escaping on a tiny fishing boat in the middle of the night.

Luckily, Canada accepted us as refugees and we were excited for a new beginning. However, any hopes of a brighter future vanished before an abusive alcoholic father who’s repeated physical violence against my mom left me screaming for any stability. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse clouded my childhood years leaving me so damaged that it changed who I was meant to grow up to be.

In my early twenties, I bought a house and converted it into a full blown marijuana grow op.

Soon after, I entered into the world of elite call girls and became one of the most sought after girls in my agency. By my late twenties, I was on top of the world and the proud owner of a multi-million-dollar luxury day spa.

Just when I thought I had it all, I made the ultimate mistake that ended in me losing everything and hitting rock bottom.

I was spiritually broken and in desperate need of healing. I had no choice but to reconcile with my past. This decision brought me down a miraculous journey that opened me up to consciousness and enabled me to exist in the space I do today; that of uninhibited peace.

The Last 10 Pounds: One Woman’s Journey to Love (by shedding Fear, Anger, Hatred…and Everything In-Between) is my personal journey and a testament that it is possible to heal and transform. To be the person you were born to be.

Read an excerpt:

The frigid temperature and howling wind chill outside paralleled how I felt inside and I questioned how I even got here in the first place. Sure it was the considerable debt that made me feel like I had been thrust into a desperate corner but unknowingly it was so much more than that. The desperation came with the energy of wanting to release all the excruciating pain and anguish that had been building inside me my entire life. Instead of stopping to take a real look at myself, I opted to believe that the world was going to somehow release my pain. That the world was the very reason why I was so shattered. And the world would make amends and heal my wounds. Feeling empty inside impairs your ability to find any self-worth. So when it comes down to selling your body for money, it seemed hasty once the nerves settled.

You’ll be fine. It’s just a job. The oldest job in the world.

I walked up to the unassuming two story grey building that was located on a busy street. I had driven by this building plenty of times and had no idea what businesses it housed. There were no exterior signs nor were there numbers assigned to any of the offices. The only instructions I had was to walk up to the second floor and once at the top of the stairs to turn right and the office was the door to the right. I inhaled a deep breath and knocked gently on the door.

No Mistress of Mine by Laura Lee Guhrke - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Laura Lee Guhrke will be awarding 2 print copies of No Mistress of Mine to two randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

After spending his youth as one of the wildest rakes in the ton, Lord Denys Somerton has devoted the past six years to putting his past behind him. He is determined to fulfill his duties, find a suitable wife, and start a family, but that plan changes when Lola Valentine—the red-haired temptress from his past—returns to London, sparking the same irresistible desires that almost ruined his life once before.

Lola is a woman with no romantic illusions. She knew love would never be enough for a British lord and an American girl from the wrong side of the tracks. For Denys’s sake, she walked away from him and the glittering life he offered. But when an unexpected inheritance brings her back to London, Lola discovers the passion between them is as hot as ever. Can they vanquish it, or will it burn out of control again and destroy them both?

Read an excerpt:

At once, unbidden and unwelcome images of Lola Valentine came into his mind—Lola on stage, in her dressing room, in his bed. Lolain a sheer white peignoir with Henry by her side. He took a breath and forced himself to speak. “What about him?”

“He’s dead.”

The announcement struck Denys with the impact of a rock thrown at a mirror, and the images of Lola shattered into glittering shards of anger, slicing open a wound he thought had healed long ago. Six years since she’d left him, but suddenly, he felt as raw as if it had all happened yesterday.

“Shocking news, what?”

The matter-of-fact voice of his father brought Denys back to the present, and when he noticed the earl’s concerned gaze on him, he tamped down anger and pain. “Very shocking,” he agreed. “When did this happen?”

“A month? Why weren’t we informed at once?”

The earl shrugged. “The letter is dated three weeks ago. It was delayed in the post, I imagine.”

“May I?” He held out his hand, and after a moment of further hesitation, his father leaned across the desk to place the letter in his outstretched palm.

“Does it say how he died?” Denys asked, slipping the missive out of its envelope.

“Heart attack, so Forbes says. Henry had a dicky heart, apparently.”

“Heart?” Denys paused in the act of unfolding the letter, taken aback. Henry had always been such a vital, dynamic personality. The idea of his having a weak heart seemed incongruous somehow.

He looked down at the letter, but he stared at the typewritten lines without reading them. Had she stayed with him all this time? he wondered. All the way to the end?

The wound opened a little more, and Denys reminded himself that Henry and Lola were part of his past, a distasteful business long ago over and done. He refolded the letter, unread, put it back in its envelope, and set it on the desk.

“The question is,” he said as he leaned back in his chair, glad to note his voice was quite natural, “what happens now?”

Read an excerpt:

The three dark figures moved quietly among the shadowy, rain-dripping birches, pines and alders toward the old farmhouse where amber lights glowed in the two lower windows. They crept with the stealth of foxes intent upon the chickens in the hen house, hungry and deadly, already tasting blood. And the Nichols’ actually did keep a few chickens of their own, mainly for the fresh eggs, but not altogether for that reason. They liked seeing them clucking and pecking about the yard; they were good company and cost only a bit of seed. Once, they had operated their own farm, and a fair sized one it was, too. These days they kept a small vegetable garden and Ethel Nichols tended the flowers that grew along the walkway and in her window boxes, mainly morning glories in heavenly blue and pansies in shades of lavender and sun-yellow.

In their early eighties now, and in relatively good health, they were enjoying the fruits of their labor in these latter years, including the big screen TV on which they were presently watching an old rerun of All in the Family, one of life’s pleasures that Hartley and Ethel shared. …

When the commercial came on, Ethel rose from the big stuffed chair across from her husband’s Lazy Boy. She was white-haired, ample of figure, and quick to smile. “Cup of tea, Hartley?”

He looked in her direction and grinned mischievously. Though his own hair had long gone and he walked with a limp, to Ethel he was as handsome as the first time she saw him walking into Mr. Biggar’s class in grade nine. She could still see him as he was then, tall and lean, with a thatch of fair hair fallen over his brow.

“Wouldn’t mind having just a tiny slice of that apple pie you baked to go with my tea.” An affectionate coaxing twinkled in blue eyes that had faded only a little over the years.

Looking at him, she mentally shook her head. He knew he had trouble getting to sleep if he ate after he’d had his supper. “Sure,” she said. And it will be tiny, Mister Nichols, you can bet on that. She had started for the kitchen when she stopped in the doorway between the living room and kitchen, thinking she’d heard a noise outside. She listened. Heard it again. A squeaking of the porch swing chain?

“Did you hear that?” she called into the living room.

“Hear what? Didn’t hear nothin’, Ethel.”

“I’m not sure. Sounded like... oh, I’m sure it’s nothing. The wind.”

Five Things You Might Not Know About Me

Sharing five things about me did turn out to be a fun and interesting exercise. Often I wonder if I were to stand next to my old self at fifteen years of age, will that shy and introvert boy recognize me? Growing up in a small town in rural India, unlike my lawyer parents I wasn’t the one who was reaching out to people, talking to them and making friends. I kept it to myself and often stayed quiet even in a group setting. But now when I look back, I think I spent more time in observing how people behaved and reacted to things. May be the places, the people, the smells and the behaviors that I observed then got recorded into my brain and come alive through my writing.

I get the inspiration and energy to write from those around me. I can never picture myself locked in a cabin and writing for days. I need human interaction to foster creativity. After a day full of interactions, as the clock ticks past 9 p.m. together with some music in my earphones and a warm cup of coffee is the perfect setup for my fingers to start beating the keyboard. That is the reason why I have not missed any social engagements throughout the process. I do believe that this has influenced my characters and exploring their social behavior has definitely made them more alive.

Talking about music, I do like mystic music especially the Sufi music even though largely I consider myself as Hindu atheist. It does present an interesting contradiction of psyche. When I look at a larger picture though, I believe that such contradictions exist in each and every one of us and we have to find a way to deal with them. I have challenged my characters with such questions and immersed myself in their psyche to find the answers. The protagonist Shivaji Chavan in ‘Ten Days in October’ has to navigate through such contradictions and formulate his own philosophy of life.

Don’t be surprised if I say that I have not experienced a writer’s block while writing ‘Ten Days in October.’ I feel that having the engineering and marketing background really helped me here. I took a fairly structured approach to writing the novel. Starting with one liner for the novel, I outlined the whole story, characters, chapters and scenes. To be honest, it was also the deadline set by my wife to finish the novel that forced me to charge ahead and not go off-track. I personally think, having self-discipline and schedule is critical to writing process. Some may argue that it limits creativity but then I must say that it was the other way round for me.

I do believe that as an author my role is not to just tell a story but to connect with my readers and force them to think. I have tried to achieve the same in ‘Ten Days in October’ and based on the feedback I have received so far I will like to think that the effort probably resulted in some good discussions. The story of ‘Ten Days in October’ is loosely inspired by real life events and makes a commentary on one of the glaring social issues we face today. I intend to continue writing with thought provoking socio-economic issues at the center stage.

'5 a.m. phone call broke Police Inspector Shivaji Chavan’s sleep informing him that local jeweler Anil Kokate, was found hanging from a tree on the banks of Pravara River in a small town of rural India. Although the signs point to an open and shut case of suicide, Chavan suspects foul play. While trying to find the missing pieces of the story he finds more hidden skeletons and comes across astonishing & cruel past of the victim. What begins as a routine investigation quickly turns darker, ruthless and pressing. Can Chavan handle the pressure of his superiors, local media and frightened masses? Can he navigate the system to reach the killer? Can he solve the moral dilemma when he comes face to face with the killer?

Recall by David McCaleb - Spotlight and Giveaway

Meet Red Harmon, a special ops veteran who learns he never left the call of duty . . .

To a trio of muggers, Red looks like just another suburban dad. But when they demand his wallet at knifepoint, something snaps. In the blink of an eye, two muggers are dead, the third severely injured, and Red doesn’t remember a thing. Once an elite member of the Det, a secret forces outfit whose existence is beyond classified, Red thought his active service was over.

But his memory is coming back—and a lethal killing machine is returning to duty . . .

Facing an unthinkable nuclear threat, a volatile international power play, and a personal attack against his family, Red has no choice. He must rejoin his old team, infiltrate the enemy camp, and complete the biggest mission of his life . . .

Enjoy an excerpt:

“Tony!” Lori said again. Only now did Red realize she’d been screaming it. Her eyes were wide, pleading. She pointed to the ground. One of the gangbangers lay on his belly, blood running from his legs and a small pool forming under his head. Red was bent over, knuckles clenched in the man’s hair, pulling him off the pavement. His forearm was bloody and he pressed a snub-nosed revolver at the mugger’s brain stem. Where’d the pistol come from?

The thug’s eyes were closed; he wasn’t moving. Dead? Resisting the urge to let go, Red laid the guy’s head on the asphalt.

“Tony, you don’t have to kill that one.” Her voice was shrill.

He backed up, pointing the pistol at the still body. Red licked a metallic taste from chapped lips, breathing fast and shallow as a panting dog. What the hell was going on? A tall man an aisle over held up leather-gloved hands, backing away. He ducked into a Dodge Charger, tires squealing as he accelerated out of the parking lot.

Red slowed his breathing, then turned to Lori. “The kids?” Where was the Explorer? He spotted it a few spaces away. The shopping cart lay to one side, three boxes of number two pencils scattered across the pavement like pickup sticks. He jumped over the mess, landing next to two bloody heaps, the bodies of the other muggers. He squinted as the light reflected off one of the scarlet pools and stifled a retch.
