Do you have any phobias?

Yes, I don’t like having open windows without screens. Although I love nature, I believe it needs to stay safely outside, where it belongs. I’m a little phobic about birds and annoying insects blundering their way into the house. Seems to me that an open, screenless, window is as good as an engraved invitation to a bird, bat, bee, mosquito, etc. Pigeons are particularly troubling. Unless these creatures are paying rent, they need to stay outside.

Do you listen to music when you're writing?

No. I love music and whenever I hear it, it grabs my attention away from writing. I have a hard time focusing on writing if music is playing in the background.

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.

Probably an anthology of Edgar Allan Poe stories that my mother allowed me to read when I was around nine or ten. Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart was a gateway drug to all of his other incredible stories. Some were difficult to read at that age but others like The Gold Bug or The Purloined Letter, quickly became favorites.

What comes first, the plot or characters?

That’s a tricky one! I think plot. Most of my stories start with an idea for a plot. Then, I see what kind of characters could fit the plot. On the other hand, occasionally, the nature of the character makes creating a plot easy. For example, in The Big Comb Over, Roland, who’s obsessed with his hair (as I am) undertakes a quest in London to find more dry shampoo.

Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?

I am a fan of Pop Art luminary, Roy Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein embraced a vintage comic book style in his works. For my second novel, Clonk!, I hired an illustrator to create the appearance of a vintage comic book, basically, a policeman’s cap with the book title in the dialog balloon. For The Big Comb Over, I went retro comic again, with the same illustrator. I had an idea that the front cover image could be a person reading The Big Comb Over, with tears of either joy or sorrow. (Let the reader decide.) Because there is a French connection (sorry Mr. Hackman) in the story, I decided to make the character’s version of the book appear in French. The text, “La Grande Coiffure Marée Basse,” means “The Big Hairstyle at Low Tide.” “Low tide” is apparently one way to articulate the look of the comb over in French as there doesn’t appear to be an exact translation.

It’s 2050 and Robbie Elders has all but forgotten about his oddball, religious fanatic uncle, tim tim. He’s taken up the latest fad, genealogical research based solely on DNA. But Robbie’s “inconclusive” DNA results are unsettling. He crashes back to his childhood, back to his world of comic books and tim tim.

“I opt for posh and London” declares Lady Florence Stour. It’s 2019 and time for a Royal Wedding. Robbie’s uncle, Stef, is engaged to Lady Florence, a distant member of the British royal family. Stef’s Baltimore clan have been invited, but Robbie’s mom and dad can’t attend. They’ve entrusted Robbie and big brother, Doyle, to their mom’s two eccentric brothers, uncles Roy and Roland. Roy, a weathered waterman with a severe Baltimore accent, lives for Maryland blue crabs. Roland, a mildly hypochondriacal actor, lives to survive the Karens he unavoidably encounters. And then there’s Desales, Roy’s smart aleck, teenage son. He lives to prank. They’ve descended upon London. What could possibly go wrong?

Meanwhile, tim tim has been coaching Robbie on “the mission.” A silly religious fantasy according to Robbie’s atheist parents and the therapists. Or perhaps not? Things are not always as they appear in The Big Comb Over.

He was thinking that the man’s accent could be Irish. But more Cockney, almost. Odd. He saw the man thrust his hand forward.

“Name’s Roy.” He shook Roy’s hand, earnestly.

“Name’s Dixon. Pleasure to meet you.” He glanced over at Roy’s suit. “Nice couture! A refreshing play on seersucker! ‘Maison Dixon’ is mine. Curious to hear about yours!”

Roy felt a bit confused. He had already introduced himself. He figured maybe those white things were hearing aids. And he had a crazy name. “Ya said yours is Mason Dixon?”

“Yes!”

“Like your Mason-Dixon line?”

“Well, thank you, Roy! Which particular line do you favor?”

Roy felt confused again. “Favor? Well, I was thinkin’ of the long one? The old one?”

Bertram nodded, knowingly. Nice to know the “Smart Man” line was still revered. Teddy had been encouraging him to drop it. “Yes, Smart Man, a long and successful line.”

Roy nodded. “Why, thanks, Mr. Dixon. But I would reckon everbody ’roun here’s heard of it. Don’t take too much brains. Historical, like.”

“Brilliant! Thanks, Roy. That’s my job. To keep those lines out in the public’s mind.”

Roy scratched at his rusty beard stubble. “So, like, ya do surveys, still? Ta mark the lines?”

“Well, certainly. But those are a little old school. We don’t always attach a survey to each line we produce. We get things done more with social media. Influencers, mainly. Good judges of the zeitgeist.”

Roy was thinking that surveyors setting lines without surveys didn’t sound very safe. And he wasn’t sure about the rest. “Ya done anything here in Bawlmer? Any new ones?” Roy had been shopping at that new supermarket in Middle River. He wanted to make sure the building was safe. He was hoping Mr. Dixon’s company was not involved.

About the Author: J. Paul (J.P.) Rieger is a born and bred Baltimorean and mostly retired Maryland attorney. As such, he’s well acquainted with the quirkiness and charm of Baltimore’s unique citizens. He’s author of Clonk!, a police farce set in Baltimore and published in 2023 by Apprentice House Press (Loyola University-Baltimore). He’s also author of The Case Files of Roderick Misely, Consultant, a mystery novel featuring a wannabe lawyer anti-hero. Welcome to It's Raining Books. What are four things you can’t live without?

Well, my family (including my dog) and all the stuff at the bottom of Maslow’s Hierarchy (air, water, food, shelter) – does that count? Or do you mean actual, physical objects? In which case it would be an endless stack of blank notebooks, black .88 Stabilo pens, my laptop and an internet connection. I can create my own whole worlds out of those four things! And can I have coffee, too, please?

What is your favorite television show?

Twin Peaks is a series I could watch over and over again. It’s so strange and upsetting, but there’s nothing else like it anywhere. And David Lynch waiting a full twenty-five years to release the third season (because that was what was called for in the original)! That is some artistic foresight and patience. Also, the opening music makes me teary-eyed and I don’t know why. I could think about that show forever.

If you could be any character, from any literary work, who would you choose to be? Why?

Harriet the Spy. I did try to become her when I was ten or so – the utility belt, the notebook, the spy route. I already had the glasses! It’s a great book for a novelist in training, and also a cautionary tale about how to handle one’s observations of other people’s lives and behavior.

What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?

Besides Playing Army, which released on the 25th of June, I don’t know about other work coming soon! I have a day job to work around, and I’m a slow writer to begin with. But in my slow way, I’m working on my next novel. Without jinxing myself by saying too much, it’s a continuation of Playing Army, but based on a year I taught preschool in an all-Black Catholic school in East Baltimore. Kind of like Abbott Elementary, but haunted. Stay tuned!

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

If I could wake up, morphed into another writer, I would be ecstatic to find out I’d become Ann Patchett (author of, among many other books, Bel Canto, which is just a heart-wrenching story about love in an impossible situation). It’s not going to happen – even if I worked my butt off to try to write like that, I’d still wake up as a giant cockroach that was trying to be something I’m not. But maybe she’d let me help out in her book store or something. That would also be a dream realized.

I also love and adore and attempt – badly – to emulate Anne Tyler. She writes clean (as in, not overly-ornate prose) but precisely, and her characters are always so true and her stories always have the perfect touch of whimsy and humor to make even awful family drama feel very human.

It’s 1995 and the Army units of Fort Stewart, Georgia are gearing up to deploy to Bosnia, but Lieutenant Minerva Mills has no intention of going to war-torn eastern Europe. Her father disappeared in Vietnam and, desperate for some kind of connection to him, she’s determined to go on a long-promised tour to Asia. But the Colonel will only release her on two conditions—that she reform the rag-tag Headquarters Company so they’re ready for the peacekeeping mission, and that she get her weight within Army regs, whichever comes second. Min only has one summer to kick everyone’s butts into shape but the harder she plays Army, the more the soldiers—and her body—rebel. If she can’t even get the other women on her side, much less lose those eight lousy pounds, she’ll never have another chance to stand where her father once stood in Vietnam, feeling what he felt. The Colonel may sweep her along to Bosnia or throw her out of the Army altogether. Can you fake it until you make it? Min is about to find out.

I turned to look, but before I could see, before I could process what was happening, brakes squealed and treads strained against their forward trajectory. A tracked vehicle did not turn on a dime when hemmed in by trees. Washburn had climbed into the passenger side of my Humvee to get on the radio and his helmet and Reyes’s—awake now and likewise silhouetted against the brightness—were turned toward an armored personnel carrier that burst from between the trees straight at them.

Bright lights made a fuzzy arc in the smoke, then the APC plowed into the vinyl side of the Humvee. There was a sickening crunch, the sound of armor hitting the thin, metal-framed doors. The Humvee lurched forward into the back corner of the deuce, pushed by the much larger vehicle. The deuce moved, too, then halted the Humvee’s momentum.

I froze. It took a full five seconds for the cicadas to recover, to begin screaming into the night, although an engine fan was still running somewhere. Those five seconds were so dense I could hear the Brownian noise of molecules struggling for space. Then someone was screaming in a language I didn’t know. Maybe Reyes? Screaming in Tagalog? Robinson emerged from the cab of the deuce and stumbled toward me on the trail but I motioned her back. “Lay on the horn,” I said. “Fuck light and noise discipline. Turn on the headlights and don’t stop blasting the horn until somebody turns up.”

About the Author

Nancy Stroer grew up in a very big family in a very small house in Athens, Georgia and served in the beer-soaked trenches of post-Cold War Germany. She holds degrees from Cornell and Boston University, and her work has appeared in the Stars and Stripes, Soldiers magazine, Hallaren Lit Mag, Wrath-Bearing Tree, and Things We Carry Still, an anthology of military writing from Middle West Press.

She’s a teacher and a trainer, and an adjunct faculty member of the Ellyn Satter Institute, a 503(c) not-for-profit that helps individuals and families develop a more joyful relationship to food and their bodies. Playing Army is her first novel.

He wondered again if they would come for him tonight. The hotel porter and counter staff were looking at him suspiciously when he last went out for food. Or was he just looking at them weird? If they came for him tonight, for which crime would they come? Would it be Interpol? What he did to the man in Bali might warrant that. He didn’t feel too bad about that one because he was only some fag who came onto him after seeing him in Kuta one night when Paul was hungry and standing alone in the darkness. The man asked if he was ok and invited him back to his house and made dinner. Paul knew his old coach would be ashamed that he had beaten the man, not to mention taken his money. He saw his coach in his mind again - this time holding pads for him in the ring. If only Paul had made more money from boxing, then he would never have had to come to Asia. He never would have been standing hungry and lost and standing with street dogs and feeling like a failure. That was the worst moment in Paul’s life and he didn’t want to remember it again.

About the Author: Gregory Pakis is an Australian author, film-maker, actor and wacky vlogger. He has written the short story, The Lonely Australian of the Asian Night; the soon to be released horror-suspense novellas, The Regressor and He., and Memoir of a Suburban Hoe-Bo, which is partly an account of when he lived out of a van for ten years in Melbourne.

Gregory Pakis is also the writer / director of the feature films, The Garth Method (2005) and The Joe Manifesto (2013), which have won national and international awards and been distributed through Accent Entertainment, Label, Vanguard Cinema.

Gregory's more informal video projects are the feature documentaries, Garth Goes Hitch-Hiking (2007) and Garth Lives in a Van (2011) which have screened at film festivals in Australia.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. How do you develop your plot and characters?

When I develop plot and characters in my writing, I typically start with a single idea that captivates me—a concept, theme, character, or setting that sparks my imagination. From there, I delve into creating my characters, fleshing out their backgrounds, motivations, and goals. Once my characters are established, I outline the main events or plot points of the story, but I remain open to changes and developments that may arise during the writing process.

As I write, my characters often take on a life of their own, influencing the direction of the plot and leading to unexpected twists and turns. This organic development is where the magic of storytelling happens, as characters grow and change, and the plot becomes richer and more compelling. My ultimate goal is to create a story that resonates with readers.

What has been one of the biggest challenges you've faced as an author?

For me, finding an audience has been a challenge. It's tough to stand out among established authors. Building a platform with a website and social media presence has felt overwhelming. Marketing and promotion are crucial but challenging, especially with limited resources. The publishing industry is incredibly competitive, with thousands of new books released each year. It can be frustrating trying to get your book noticed. Sometimes, I just want to shout, "Give my book a chance!"

But, after reading some positive reviews, I'm confident that my audience is out there; I just need to find them!

How do you approach the beginning of a story?

I try to approach the beginning of a story by engaging the reader with a compelling hook that grabs their attention. I then introduce characters, setting, and tone while establishing the central conflict. I also try to create intrigue and set the narrative early on to draw readers in.

How about the ending?

When I wrap up my stories, I focus on a few key things to make sure the ending is satisfying. First, I resolve the main plot and tie up any loose ends. I want readers to feel a sense of closure. I also show how the characters have grown throughout the story.

I try to avoid abrupt endings and make sure the tone matches the rest of the story. Whether it's happy, sad, or bittersweet, I want the ending to feel right.

I like to leave some parts open to interpretation to add depth.

Before finalizing the ending, I always get feedback from my writing group to make sure it works.

How did it feel when you became a published author?

To be honest, I was filled with such doubt that it took me seven months before I submitted my manuscript. After submitting it and receiving several rejection letters, I finally received the "Yes! We'd like to publish your manuscript" response. I felt such validation. Someone actually wanted to publish my story. What a great moment.

Along with the surge of excitement, there was a sense of accomplishment. But along with that excitement came a bit of nervousness and a touch of fear. Would readers connect with my characters? Would they like the story and my message?

Once my book was published, those emotions intensified. There was the thrill of seeing my book in print, holding it in my hands, and knowing that readers were going to read the story I created. But there was also vulnerability, as my work was now open to criticism and interpretation. I felt a mix of excitement, pride, and anxiety as I waited to see how my book would be received and I’m happy to say, so far so good!

Overall, it was a deeply rewarding and humbling experience, a wonderful moment in my life.

His jaw was slightly swollen and bruised, but other than that, his face was untouched. His grey eyes were unusually light from the angle where I sat, and his dark hair was tousled in a way that made me ache to run my fingers through it.

“May I?” He motioned to the bench next to me.

I was still surprised to see him, so I just nodded.

Spencer sat and shifted his body so it was facing mine. “I’ve been looking all over for you. Didn’t you get my calls?”

In my rush to see Aidan, I had left my cell phone at home, so I shook my head no.

Spencer gave me a ghost of a smile and softly chuckled. “Are you gonna talk to me or just nod your head?”

“I’m sorry. I’m just shocked to see you.” I shifted my body so it was facing his.

“After last night, I wanted to make sure you were okay.” His soft gaze traveled from my face to the length of my body. When he saw the bruises, his jaw clenched before he frustratingly blew out a breath of air. He gently lifted my arm to examine it further. I could sense he was trying to rein in his anger. “Did he hurt you anywhere else?”

Spencer reached to place a stray lock of my hair behind my ear.

My eyes didn’t leave his. I whispered, “No.”

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write historical fiction because I absolutely love history. The research is not a chore for me, it is a fascinating and fulfilling side job. In my personal perspective, digging into the past is equal to the enjoyment of writing.

Aside from that, historical events do make my job as an author easier too. World wars, mass immigration, and catastrophic weather provide a solid story, plot, and climax. Although I tend to write more about how these events affect families and individuals, it still provides me with a perfect backdrop for the story in my mind, which moves at the speed of a motion picture.

What research is required?

Initially, I pick the historical event that I want to write about. In my newest book, that event is the War of 1812 and what caused it. I visit plenty of museums, online and in-person, collecting as much data as possible. Sometimes, if the past event is recent enough, I will interview veterans to obtain valuable first-hand accounts.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

I learned that war is ugly, but the individual soldiers are human. They make mistakes but they also have values, that they must uphold, for themselves and their own peace of mind. As my main character, Jesse Eastman said, “This war needs men like me.”

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

The only thing I can think of, is that I write consistently, every week, without taking long breaks. It keeps the writing smooth and flowing. I find that if I put the book down for two weeks or longer, I lose the story. It is a death sentence for my book.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am a plotter. I write an outline first and have rough outlines of each chapter before I start the first draft.

While I am writing, some things change and new characters are added, but I always control my characters from going wayward and changing the story.

At the end of August, I will be starting Bk 2 of The Eastman Saga (1830s American history)

Jesse walked confidently to the group as the man spoke commandingly to him in the Arikaran language. Jesse looked at him in bewilderment.

“He said that he would take everyone into the village and save our lives in exchange for the bear pelt and the canoe,” the woman translated slowly.

The Arikara guard spoke again, quickly, almost jumbling over his words with passion.

“He also says that this is not a free stay. Everyone must work once they are healthy enough.” The woman explained the rest of the agreement and looked at Jesse for confirmation.

Jesse looked back at the stranded Overland Astorian group. They were probably three more days away from dying, he thought. Losing the bear pelt was nothing, but the canoe would be a huge sacrifice. “Tell him we will give him what he wants,” Jesse replied, rubbing his long beard. “But he must allow us to rebuild a new canoe with the surrounding trees. It is our only survival to return to St. Louis.”

The woman frowned, turned to the Arikara guard, and relayed the message in their native tongue.

The Arikara man’s mouth frowned in deliberation. Then, a half smile graced his face. He spoke rapidly to the woman, then turned to his group of guards, gesturing for them to grab the canoe and bear fur. They began approaching the Astorians as the native woman spoke to Jesse. “They have agreed,” she translated, with a funny grin on her face. “He also said that you are stupid and young.”

Jesse laughed and patted her on the shoulder. “Thank you,” he said. “You saved our lives.”

“No,” she replied. “You did, Jesse.”

J. A. Boulet is the passionate author of six historical fiction novels. Raised in a Hungarian refugee family, J. A. was born and grew up in Canada with a strong moral foundation, which she has stood behind all her life. Ms. Boulet began writing poetry at a very young age and progressed to short stories and novels easily. My family’s most cherished vacation when we were all kids was a trip we took to the South Island of New Zealand in the southern hemisphere Autumn of 1980. All our relatives live on the north island where my mum and dad both grew up on dairy farms. So, we had already made a trip or two to Auckland in my young life. My parents had emigrated to live in the tropical heat and brutal humidity of the northeast of Australia before any of us kids were born and given a choice in the matter.

There are four of us in my family. An elder brother, an older sister, me, and a younger sister. Each of us is quite different in our personality and our interests. My older sister is the athlete. My younger sister is the diplomat. My brother is the brainiac. Me? Well, I tend to just sit back and let my siblings be in the limelight.

You can imagine me as being the little kid running around in the playground under a mop of red hair being extra polite with all the other kids and no one teasing me at all for having red hair. Something close to that.

But among me and my siblings, none of us ever stole a car and took off for a joy ride. None of us have ever been arrested by undercover police for trying to sell them synthetic crack cocaine we had cooked up in the basement. None of us ever got in trouble for mislabeling someone by using the wrong pronoun. I mean, sure, I once got in trouble for calling my headmaster the C-word, but, other than that small blemish on my record, I considered myself an exemplary student. Our mum and dad were amazing parents to raise us all so well.

We were a very content family growing up in the 70’s and 80’s while living in the sweltering pizza oven, otherwise known as North Queensland. What about central air conditioning? Oh, how entitled and twenty-first century of you to ask. Rubbing an ice cube across the forehead and asking my younger sister to blow against it. Does that count? Central air conditioning? No. There was none. Just like there was extraordinarily little to do in my hometown. Watching paint dry as a kid living in Townsville brought out the same level of unbridled fascination that I now see with adults viewing porn.

The reasoning behind there being nothing to do is obvious. It is not safe to do anything where I lived. Australian country towns are just holding pens for human beings surrounded by a natural species menagerie of death.

I wasn't always passionate about vegetables. My first memorable encounter with fresh vegetables was the evening Denis (the cute guy I had been dating for a couple of months) first brought me to visit his family's farm. I was 17 at the time. Growing up in the suburbs, my only experience with produce up to that point was a few staples from the supermarket and frozen foods section. We had no garden and no real produce variety in my childhood home. Our family dinners involved the classics— carrots, potatoes, frozen peas, and the odd green salad thrown in for good measure. Farmers markets and CSAs were completely foreign to me; fresh was not something I thought about, and I had never seen or heard of most of the vegetables in this book.

It was a warm, sunny evening as 19-year-old Denis drove me through the agricultural landscape in his bright red compact car. Pulling into the gravel driveway of his parents' property, we parked next to a large, weathered, white barn. Hopping out of the vehicle, we were met by a few of his brothers coming in from the field with dirt on their hands and grins on their faces. It was an expansive, hundred-acre, organic vegetable farm that his parents had started from scratch and that he and his siblings grew up cultivating. There was so much pride in him around it and a real passion for the produce they grew. It lit me up to see the enthusiasm sparking in him to show me all of it, and I couldn't wait to discover this unique world that made him tick so vibrantly.

After enjoying an energetic outdoor supper with everyone back at the house, Denis invited me for a stroll to see the garden.

"Kick off your shoes," he said, tossing his own aside. We proceeded to walk barefoot through the acres of dirt and lush growth.

The sun was beginning to set behind the surrounding mountains, bathing the whole valley in a golden glow. The birds were chirping and flying overhead as he took my hand. I gazed in wonder as he proudly named the different kinds of plants. I thought he was teasing me when he pointed and told me the kale was something to eat. (That dark green, weird, leafy thing? That surely couldn't be food!) I look back and laugh now, but it was just so far from my food experience at the time.

I remember when he bent down to the damp earth, pulled a handful of carrots from the soil, and wiped the dirt from them with the old T-shirt he was wearing. Then he handed me one to munch on as we continued talking. It tasted incredibly crunchy and sweet— far better than anything I'd ever eaten from a grocery store. I was caught up in wonderment. What was this incredible lifestyle?

Welcome to It's Raining Books. If someone were writing a story about you, what would your blurb say?

Well I’m an identical twin, who was adopted by an oyster farming family and my birth family were from India, so I guess it would be a rather far reaching story!

Would you tell us a little about your newest release that isn't in the blurb?

The main villain, Bjorn Askå is a true sociopath and delights in other people’s misery. The characters in The Path of Revenge are battling exterior enemies and their own internal demons, making this a true story of revenge.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story?

I loved writing about Faust becoming a soldier and encountering Askå for the first time. This scene is intended to be a true horror scene, which jars the reader out of the action/adventure. I love the horror genre so was keen to write something that honoured horror within this book and Askå would fit within a horror novel.

If you could trade places with one of your characters, who would it be and why?

Most of the characters are living in some sort of dystopian nightmare so I’m not sure I’d want to trade places. Although, it would be intriguing to be Faust for a few days just to experience what having a memory palace is like, as being able to draw on any memory must be incredible.

The rebellion is in hiding. It has been a year since Boatman King attempted to overthrow the Empire, but instead had to escape London with his wife and their closest allies.

Not all of Boatman King’s allies are in hiding. Maverick “The Beast” Kirabo is on a mission to finish what he started on the streets of London. The former gladiator has a score to settle and revenge to unleash: Rome will fear him as they once adored him.

Despite its failure, Boatman King’s rebellion has spread disquiet in Rome’s political circles. Grand Protector Faust dispatches a pair of hunters to search the country and bring Boatman and his followers back to London for reckoning. Although Faust is the official face of Rome’s leadership, Emperor Maximus is thirsty to stamp his mark on the world and step out from his dead father’s shadow.

It was a chilly Autumn morning with barely a breath of wind. He gazed over to the other side of the channel to see a seal lazing on the mud. A heron landed a few metres away from Boatman, unperturbed by the man’s presence. It only took ten minutes to leave shore and get to the oyster beds by boat, but it felt like a wilderness. For a moment, Boatman felt like the trauma and stress of the past few months had evaporated, out here in this tiny wilderness.

“I definitely prefer hitting a Roman in the face to this.” Tobias’s words brought Boatman back to reality.

“Being out here is good for the soul,” said Boatman.

“What the f*** happened to your soul? It’s muddy, wet and cold. If I wanted that combination, I would have gone to fight in the Aestii region.”

“You need an open mind, Tobias.”

“No, I need to be somewhere hot. I used to have a gorgeous, golden tan. Do you remember that? Do you remember my tan? I looked good.” Tobias looked down at himself, mud splattered up his oilskin overalls, “Now I look like a pale hobo.”

“Did Maverick know where your off switch was? Because it would be really handy right now.”

“I came out here with you. Voluntarily.”

“Only because Bella didn’t want you.”

“I’m offended she didn’t want me to go with her.”

“She’s hunting birds. It needs to be done quietly. As in, no constant talking,” said Boatman.

Tom was born in Essex and, at 4 months old, he and his identical twin were adopted into an oyster farming family. Tom now runs the business as generation eight of Haward oyster farmers. He has a fiancée, baby daughter and a cockapoo.
