Moving to Colorado seemed like a great way to start over. In Carolan Springs, Anne plans to spend her days living the simpler life.

But when her neighbor is found dead in his compost pile, trouble comes knocking on Anne's door.

All the evidence points to Anne's other neighbor, Kandi Jenkins. As the young woman begs Anne for help, Anne finds herself thrust into a world of deceit and secrets.

Who had the most to gain from Ralph's death? As the suspect list grows, Anne finds her desire for the simple life may have led her to something sinister.

Read an excerpt:

Anne pointed at a woman wearing a baby snuggly in her Tula wrap.

“I’d only seen white and brown eggs at my grocery store. But earlier today I saw some blue ones, some pink, and even some green eggs. How do you get those kinds of eggs and do they taste different than a white egg?”

Anne moved to the side of the stage where a dozen eggs were in a clear container. “Each of these eggs is a different color. Some”—she held up one—“even have spots on them. This is determined by the type of hens you have. For instance, if you want a brown egg, then your best choices would be something like a Rhode Island Red, a Wyandotte, an Astralorp, or Orpington. Ameraucana or Aracaunas, or what some refer to as Easter-eggers, lay blue or green eggs.’’

A small hand shot up.

“Yes? You in the back.” She motioned to the small boy.

“Um, uh, how do you know if the eggs are good for you? I mean, you know, like, okay to eat? I mean, when you go to the store, you can trust they’re okay.”

“Good question. Thanks for asking.” The boy beamed at the praise.

“First, let’s start with the timing. When you go outside and retrieve eggs on a daily basis, those eggs are fresh. Eggs in the store can have taken up to five weeks just to get on your refrigerator shelf.”

Some people in the crowd gasped, and Anne heard, “Is that true?”

“It’s true. Look it up.” She smiled at the crowd.

Ice on the Bay by Dale E. Lehman

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I've had a lifelong interest in mysteries. When I was in junior high school, I owned a book called "Two Minute Mysteries" which contained a collection of very short crime stories that the reader was invited to solve. I suppose the intellectual challenge drew me in. I was always a much better math/science student than a language/humanities student. Later in life, I came to appreciate how mystery novels can illuminate the human condition and spirit. Today it's a bit of both. I don't attempt to solve mysteries anymore when I read them, but I do want them to be intellectually satisfying when I get to the end.

What research is required?

I try to minimize necessary research, because I'm a terrible researcher. Kathleen (my wife, editor, and in "Ice on the Bay" co-author) is a far better researcher than I, so if I mess it up she can usually correct me. Lucky me! However, I have researched a questions related to police organization and procedure, medical questions, and firearms. I do a lot of location research via Google Earth, which is far cheaper than traveling all over the place.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine

Hmm . . . well . . . this is entirely inconsequential for most of us, but I learned from Detective Rick Peller that there's a statute of limitations on vehicular homicide. That caused him a lot of personal grief, because the person who killed his wife in a hit-and-run can no longer be prosecuted for it. Obviously it wasn't inconsequential for him, or for anyone else who has been touched by it. I don't think I've learned anything terribly profound from any of my characters, though. Not yet, anyway.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?
Not that I'm aware of. Kathleen still writes her manuscripts longhand and only enters them into a word processing document when she thinks she has it mostly the way she wants. But I'm completely boring where writing procedure is concerned. I start typing on my computer keyboard and eventually I have a scene.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

A bit of both. I seldom plot out a novel in great detail. I do generally have an idea of where I'm starting and where I'm going to end up, and maybe some key plot points in between. But I find that I have to see the characters in action before I know what they are going to do. Most of the time, if I plot in too much detail I end up forgetting the plan, and the characters do what they want to do anyway. So what's the point? If I make a mess of things, I untangle it during the revision process.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

Unfortunately, we're sitting in an ER treatment room as I answer this, so what I see is the curtain over the door to the room. Kathleen has faced a series medical issues of late, and here we are again. But I don't want to alarm you. She's doing reasonably well. She'll have pulled through long before you read this.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

My fourth Howard County Mystery is now in the works. I've completed a science fiction/humor novel, which is now seeking an agent. Titled "Space Operatic," it deals with a spacefaring opera company that lands in the middle of a corporate power struggle on the fringes of the solar system. That may not sound very funny, but if you've ever lived on the fringes of the solar system, you know that everyone out there is a lunatic. I'm also working on a crime/humor novel featuring a husband and wife team of thieves hired to steal a silver statuette of a pine marten. What's a pine marten, you ask? It's a European species of weasel. Why would anyone want to steal something like that? Not because it's cursed, that's for sure. There must be more to the adorable little thing than that! The novel, at any rate, is titled "Weasel Words."

Do you have a question for our readers?

Since your readers must like it when it rains books (otherwise why would they hang around a place where it is?), I'd be interested in hearing how they like their mysteries: straight up, or mixed with other genres? And if the latter, which genres?

The forecast: Record cold. The crimes: Colder still.

A saintly young veterinary technician disappears on Christmas Eve, leaving behind only a broken window and smears of blood on his clinic's back steps. Two years later, his disappearance remains a mystery. A home in an exclusive area burns to the ground, mirroring fires ignited the previous year by an arsonist who now sits in prison. Is the new fire a copycat, or has the wrong man been convicted? A criminal with a long list of enemies is shot dead, and not even his friends are sorry. While temperatures plummet, cold cases collide with new crimes, and somewhere a killer with blood as icy as the waters of the Chesapeake Bay watches and waits.

Read an Excerpt:

Without bothering to thank Peller, Dibble ate half of his sandwich before asking, "What do you want?"

"Same as you. To know why your house was torched."

"Seems obvious to me. Sergeant Montufar said arsonists get their kicks from setting fires."

"Sometimes. Not always."

Dibble maintained focus on his food. Peller took a long pull on his soda and waited patiently for him to answer, but no answer was forthcoming, so he decided to shake things up a little. "You don't think it was random, Mr. Dibble."

Dibble looked up sharply.

"Tell me I'm wrong.”

"I . . . I don't know."

Peller settled his drink in the cup holder and gazed at the trees, stark in their winter slumber. "Sergeant Montufar told me a story. Last year, an arsonist torched three houses. We caught him and sent him to prison. A set of fingerprints lifted from a mailbox near the street gave him away. The investigator might not have thought to check for prints there, except one of the victims remembered receiving a juvenile sort of warning in her mailbox. At the time, she took it for a stupid teenage prank. Fortunately she remembered it, and told the investigator about it.”

Dibble, his mouth drawn into a tight line, looked out the windshield as though studying the woods, but Peller knew he was seeing a ghost from his past. "What's your point, Lieutenant?"

"Anything, even something that seems unconnected, even something that seems stupid, could be important. And to be perfectly frank, I think you know what it is. Why don't you tell me about it?"

Michael:

Two years ago I made a mistake, a big one, and then I threw in another couple just for good measure. I screwed up my life big time but I made it through. I was lucky.

Then I was given the opportunity for a fresh start. Two years in Auckland, NZ, ‘The City of Sails’. Away from the LA gossip, a chance to breathe, to get my life back together.
I grabbed it and packed my new set of golden rules with me.

I don’t do relationships.
I don’t do commitment.
I don’t do white picket fences.

And I especially don’t do arrogant, holier-than-thou, smoking hot K9 officers who walk into my ER and rock my world.

Josh:

The only thing I know for certain about Dr. Michael Oliver is the guy is an arrogant, untrustworthy player, and I’d barely survived the last one of those in my life. Once was more than enough.

The man might be gorgeous but my eleven-year-old daughter takes number one priority and I won’t risk her being hurt, again. I’m a solo dad, a K9 cop and a son to pain in the ass, bigoted parents.

I don’t have time for games.
I don’t have time for taking chances.
I don’t have time for more complications in my life.

And I sure as hell don’t have time for the infuriating Dr. Michael Oliver, however damn sexy he is.

Read an excerpt:

Josh was fuming. Fast pitch was one of the few activities he got to enjoy on his own and now he had to put up with Michael freaking Oliver. Arriving at Kendrick’s he’d immediately collared Mark at the bar as the guy was buying a round.

“What the hell, man? Whose idea was it to invite him?”

His friend plastered a huge grin on his face and held up his hands in surrender. “Nothing to do with me, mate. Boss man just asked me to deliver him.”

“And you couldn’t think of any reason that wouldn’t be a good idea?”

“What was I going to say?” Mark studied his friend. “And honestly, he seems a good guy and he plays a solid game.”

“I don’t give a flying fuck if he plays like Nathan Nukunuku, he’s an asshole.”

“Funny, that’s what he called you.”

“Wait. He called me an asshole?”

Mark snorted. “Lighten up, Josh. Anyone would think you actually liked the guy.”

“Fuck off.”

Mark whacked him on the back of his head.

“Ow,” Josh protested.

“Suck it up. You deserved it. So, the guy was cruising, so what? Oh. My. God. What a scandal. And he even got lucky with a gorgeous young man, well good for him. It’s not a crime. And besides, he’s hot. And he hit on you. I would think that was reassuring, that you haven’t lost it. You’re both obviously hot for each other.”

“I’m a father of an eleven-year-old girl.”

“And that came with getting your dick cut off, did it?”

“You wouldn’t understand,” Josh dismissed the comment.

Trouble is no match for a lady of the extended Worthington family—except when it comes in the form of a most irresistible gentleman . . .

Lady Charlotte Carpenter’s brother-in-law has put an infamous brothel owner out of business—yet it is Charlotte who suffers the consequences. Abducted by thugs and held at an inn, she is plotting her escape when she’s suddenly rescued by a dashing gentleman. Only afterward does she realize she’s seen him before—with two courtesans! Unwilling to tarry with such a man, Charlotte makes her second escape. But it is too late to repair her reputation . . .

A known gossip has spied Charlotte’s movements, and his report is speeding through the rumor mill. Soon, everyone knows that Charlotte spent the night with Constantine, Marquis of Kenilworth. And everyone agrees the only answer is marriage—including Constantine himself, his overjoyed mother—and his mistress! But Charlotte’s abductors aren’t finished with her yet. Now Constantine will do anything to protect the spirited woman he loves and win her heart . . .

Read an excerpt:

He pulled her into his arms, slightly surprised that she came willingly.

“Charlotte.” She tilted her head, deepening their kiss. If only they could do this all night, but he had to make sure she was not simply overcome by her first experience with lust. He drew back, and wanted to preen when her lips followed. “I think we worked well together today.”

“I agree.” she said, her voice low, seductive. “We seldom disagreed at all.”

Damn. When had she turned from an innocent into a siren? She slid her arms around his neck, pressing her lush breasts against his chest for the first time. His breath hitched and his cock swelled.

This was even more of a statement than she had made earlier when she’d kissed him. He bent his head again, touching his lips to hers. Perhaps talking could wait for a while. Her mouth opened, and he took full advantage, tasting her, drinking as if he’d been stranded in a desert. A soft moan escaped her lips and her tongue touched his, tentatively at first as she learned how to take control, then with more confidence as if she wanted everything he could give her.

She felt so good, so soft and lovely. Slowly, so as not to frighten her, Con cupped one of Charlotte’s breasts and feathered her nipple with his thumb. Tilting her head, once again she deepened the kiss and pressed her body tighter against him. This time, he moved his hand to her bottom, pulling it against him. Her fingers tangled with the hair at the nape of his neck, scraping his skull.

Was this her way of telling him she would marry him? Or was it the danger they’d been in while rescuing Miss Cloverly making itself known? He damn well better find out before this went too far.

To Entice an Earl by Naomi Boom

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Naomi Boom will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

To me, historical romances seems like fairy tales, at least, the ones I read do. But realistically, I would never want to live in the past. Life, especially for women, was not great, but in historical romance, most of the bad stuff gets ignored and the magic of the appropriate time period surfaces.

What research is required?

Anachronisms. I never knew that word until I started writing. Basically, it means that everything in a historical romance novel has to be of the appropriate time period. For example, a character cannot make a phone call before the phone was invented. Sounds simple, right? Well, certain words did not exist back in the early 19th century. Styles of clothes, types of guns, whether people danced the waltz… the list is endless. And I end up checking countless little details to ensure they are not anachronisms.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

The hero taught me that risk is worthwhile, even if failure ensues. In the back of my mind, I’ve understood this concept, but I never really grasped how important it was till I wrote this novel and watched him take a huge risk. I don’t want to be the type of person who doesn’t take risks. I’d rather fail and try to achieve something.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I don’t know if this is odd, but before I write anything I always re-read the previous chapter. It might seem excessive but I feel I have a better idea of the flow than just reading the previous page.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Pantser. And I question why frequently. I follow my heart, then have to change half the book. Perhaps one day logic will take over and I’ll start plotting.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

A blanket. Tonight, in South Dakota, the temperature is -6 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m cold, so I have a blanket covering my feet while my laptop keeps the rest of me warm. My house is heated, of course, but I’m a cold person.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

The next installment in my series! I’m pretty excited about it but have some revisions to do because I should have plotted the thing out. Still, I barely can wait to see the finished result.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Sure! What’s your favorite historical romance and why? I need some good reading material.

Miss Alexandra Farris lost her heart to her older brother's friend, Lord Maxon Collins, long, long ago. Despite her girlhood attempts to win him, he never noticed her. Now that her first season is underway, she understands why. He prefers willowy blondes, not curvaceous maidens with darker coloring like herself. Rather than wallow in self-pity, she forgets love and focuses on something more attainable—an advantageous match.

Lord Collins is plagued by an uncomfortable feeling whenever he goes near Miss Farris. One of annoyance. And yet, he can’t seem to stop thinking of her, touching her, kissing her...He must act in her brother’s stead, which means he has to approve her suitor and ensure her safety. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to find a worthy gentleman.

Wedding her off should be a simple task, but not if he can’t let her go.

Read an Excerpt:

She inhaled and stepped up to him. He was so tall, at least five inches taller than her, yet she would not allow him to intimidate her, not this gentleman she used to pester as a little girl. She peered up at him and planted her fists on her hips. “You cannot possibly imagine I would listen to you, can you?”

His eyes narrowed, and he straightened from his position against the wall which brought him that much closer to her. “I don’t only imagine. I know you will listen to me. You have no other options.”

“Of course I do.”

“No, you do not.”

Their gazes locked, and everything around Alexa faded away, except for the brilliant blue eyes which held her riveted in place. She brought her palm to her chest to make sure her heart still beat.

It did, just barely.

She finally broke away and whispered, “I have not given him a response yet.”

His responding smile lacked warmth, and he appeared to gloat as he said, “Excellent. I never have liked Lord Edwin and cannot fathom why you do.”

“I happen to be very much in love with him.” She colored. She had just told Lord Collins she loved Lord Edwin. Where was her fan when she needed it most? Next to Miss Cannis where she had forgotten it. And now, she had to endure a most frustrating conversation where she admitted a falsehood. Not a simple falsehood, either. One which competed with the largest untruths of her life.

Her rushed denial teetered on her lips as a stronger gust of wind tore through her hair, causing several more strands to dislodge. She muttered a curse and reached up to repair the damage the wind had made.

His large, warm hand shot out and stopped her. The humid night air could not compare to the warmth of his hand on hers, nor could it compete with the spasmodic tingles breaking out throughout her body.

The contact was too unexpected.

Too intimate.

Too much.

She darted a hesitant glance his way where he quickly masked a warm look and took a step away from her. “Leave your hair.”

She swayed from the loss of his touch and the lack of warmth in his tone.

“Are you quite all right?” he asked with a sneer, as if to erase all touches of warmth with harshness. It hadn’t worked, though. She knew better.

Whatever strange demon had overtaken him tonight was not normal and was, quite frankly, vexing to deal with. “I see you can choose to employ good manners when you wish.”

His countenance darkened and he lifted a brow. “You evidently are just fine.”

“I love home delivery.” Malik lounged in his doorway, eyeing me the way the wolf must have with the three little pigs. His British accent was pure sin.

“I love your arrogance that you didn’t bother moving after I almost killed you.”

He laughed, flashing straight white teeth against his bronze skin. He was still the only being I’d ever met who could pull off a Caesar cut, and was still the stuff of billionaire romance cover fantasies in his soft gray trousers that were artfully tailored to the hard lines of his body and navy shirt, carelessly folded back at the cuffs. “Oh, petal. I’d say I missed you, but I didn’t. Now, unless you brought the more interesting twin?” He peered into the hallway. “No?”

He shut the door, but I stuffed my foot in to block it. Not like he politely stopped trying to close it. “Ow.” I pushed my shoulder into the door to keep my poor bones from breaking. “If you weren’t wondering why I was here, you wouldn’t have let security buzz me up or let my toes cross the wards I’m sure you’ve got strung across this door.”

“Ten seconds.”

“That’s not–”

“Five, four…”

“Demons are being bound.” I rushed my words as he made a buzzing noise.

Malik yanked me inside by my collar and slammed the door.

I wrenched free.

His penthouse apartment hadn’t changed. Still to-die-for sweeping views of the city, a massive glass wine storage unit in the open concept space, and a loft bedroom. He pointed at one of the leather sofas, custom made to hug the curved walls. “Sit and talk.”

Five Things You Might Not Know About Donna Migliaccio

We are pleased welcome Donna Migliaccio who is visiting with us to celebrate today's release of StoneKing, the third book in her The Gemeta Stone series, to share five things you probably don't know about her.

1. I don’t read a great deal of fantasy, even though it’s the genre I write. Out of the 75 or so books I read last year, fantasy titles probably made up about a third of that, and that number is somewhat inflated because I was burning through Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. The rest of my reading was either literary fiction or non-fiction, on all kinds of subjects.

2. I could live on ham sandwiches. Ham sandwiches with mayo and Wickles pickles. I adore them.

3. I have never watched a single episode of “Game of Thrones.” I want to read the series first, but I can’t commit to such a massive undertaking just yet (and I want to make sure George R.R. Martin finishes the damn thing first).

4. I spend an inordinate amount of time cursing at the gray squirrels in my yard, because they’re either raiding my bird feeders, digging in my potted plants, or stealing tomatoes out of my garden. And yet when one is sitting on my deck rail looking pitiful, I’ll toss him a nut.

5. I don’t watch a lot of television, and have absolutely zero interest in cars or in the investment world, but I’m addicted to Amazon’s “The Grand Tour” and “Shark Tank” on ABC. I think it’s because I find the mix of personalities on both shows fascinating.

They call him StoneKing: the lord of four countries, the vanquisher of the Wichelord Daazna, the man who will restore his people to prosperity and peace.

But there is no peace for Kristan Gemeta. Already weighed down by the cares of his new realm, Kristan carries a secret burden – the knowledge that Daazna is not dead. He isolates himself in his ruined castle in Fandrall, where he struggles to control the destructive Tabi’a power that may be his only hope of defeating the Wichelord once and for all.

And there’s trouble elsewhere in his realm. His Reaches are squabbling in Dyer, Melissa and Nigel are experiencing heartache in Norwinn, and Heather’s command in Hogia is in jeopardy. Unaware of this turmoil, Kristan receives an unexpected gift – one that forces him, his knights, an inexperienced squire and a crafty young shape-shifter into a hazardous winter journey.

Break the Line by Allison Mullinax

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Allison Mullinax who is celebrating the recent release of Break the Line.
Five things about Allison Mullinax
1. I am infatuated with all things space-related. This passion came a little later in life, just ask my high school science teacher. But, it’s true. On any given night, you might find me on my back deck, a glass of wine resting beside my telescope. While in the throes of research for my second novel, When It All Goes Still, I would get lost in quantum physics and quantum entanglement studies. Thus, my passion for the unknowns of the universe was born.

2. I have never read Harry Potter. I watched all of the movies and found them very entertaining. Please don’t hate me. But, I have taken the sorting house quiz and apparently, I’m a Ravenclaw.

3. When I was little, I wanted to be a Storm Chaser. I still kinda do. When the sky would grow dark, I would ride the storm out on our front porch swing, always hoping for the thunder to grow louder and the wind a bit stronger. I’m fascinated by weather and climate.

4. I have five tattoos, but only one of them I like. They are all hidden, except for one on the arch of my foot. I’m not going to tell you what any of them are. Yes, it’s because I’m embarrassed.

5. If I could go anywhere in the world, and do anything right at this very moment, I would choose glacier calving in Alaska. I want to take a boat right up the glacier’s edge, run my fingers across the ice, and then high tail it back to safety. Have you ever watched a video of glacier calving? Go do it. Super cool.

As a pro-fisherman, Benson Howell’s days are spent on murky lake water, reeling in largemouth bass and winning first place trophies. At twenty-nine, life is easy and carefree. His only job is to stay in the top rankings during the fishing circuit, and keep the sponsors happy. That is, until he meets hot tempered, fiery haired Danni-Rose in small-town Alabama. He has never backed down from anything too big to reel in.

Danni-Rose has spent the past six years of her life burying her past. When Benson Howell literally plows his boat right into her life, armed with simmering anger, she fights the current pulling her closer to him. With a past she can’t let go of, and the sexy fisherman breaking down all her walls, Danni-Rose does everything she can to break the line connecting her to Benson.

Will Danni-Rose be able to let go of the past? Can Benson change her mind about him? Or will they both miss the catch of a lifetime?

Havana Blues by David Pereda

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. David Pereda will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The year is 1952 and Ramon Rodriguez’s life as a teenager in fun-loving Havana is filled with typical activities and concerns: girls, education, religion, baseball, parties, and hanging out with friends. The country is enjoying a period of prosperity and happiness--until General Batista stages a coup that topples the government and Ramon’s life is flung into chaos.

In a few short years, the carefree fifties morph into a vicious and repressive dictatorship highlighted by corruption, organized gambling, school closures, student demonstrations, police brutality, and assassinations.

As Ramon experiences the thrills of his first romantic relationship, graduates from school, and struggles to plan for an uncertain future, he is forced to make important decisions that may be dangerous to him, his family, his friends, and his girlfriend – the beautiful Sonia -- and could turn deadly.

Read an excerpt:

Black Face chomped on his cigar, eyeing Pepe with deliberation. He was big and muscular and mean-looking. Pepe looked frail next to him. ‘Go home, muchacho.’ He finally said. ‘Now. Before you get in trouble.’

‘Is the president really dead?’ I asked. ‘Is it true?’

The fat policeman laughed in my face. He had rotten teeth and bad breath too. He winked at Black Face. ‘Hey, Valdez, did you hear that? This boy wants to know if the president’s dead. How do you like that?’

The black policeman laughed too, as if what Puffy Face had said was the funniest thing in the world, his burly body shaking all over. He coughed, and tears came to his eyes.

‘Is he dead?’ Pepe asked.

The two policemen laughed some more, but not so hard.

Their laughter was running out of steam. Maybe they were getting tired. I realized, suddenly, how scared I really was of them – my heart was pounding hard and my breath was coming in shallow little gasps. It was time to leave. Who cared if the president was dead or not, anyway? We could find that out later.

‘Is he dead?’ Pepe asked again.

‘You sure ask a lot of questions,’ Puffy Face replied with annoyance. ‘No, he ain’t, cabron. Bastard ran away. Scared.’

‘Cabron yourself,’ Pepe said under his breath. ‘Fat ass!’

‘What was that you said?’ Perez scowled at Pepe.

‘Nada, Señor Policia. Nothing!’ Hermes said, walking rapidly toward the other side of the street. ‘He didn’t say nothing.’

Perez watched us with his frog eyes as Joaquin and I struggled to take Pepe away. Black Face chewed on his cigar stump.

‘What these little bastards need is work,’ Perez said. ‘Trabajo.’

‘Trabajo, si.’ Valdez took the cigar out of his mouth and spat again. ‘Put them to work in the sun ten hours a day with a pick and a shovel. That’s what they need. I guarantee you they won’t be so sassy then.’

‘Si,’ Perez said. ‘That’s what they need.’ He laughed. ‘And palos. Una buena partida de palos. Beat the shit out of them with a stick.’

As if to emphasize his words, Perez hit the façade of the school building hard with the butt of his machine gun. ‘And here’s where they learn all that mierda. Right here!’ He banged the wall again. ‘From the curas and their goddamned Catholic schools.’

‘That’s the problem with Cuba, the goddamned curas,’ Valdez said. ‘Fucking priests stick their noses into everything. All they do is create trouble. Look at these kids, asking questions. No respect for authority. Wanting to know who’s the new president.’

‘Si, what the fuck do they care who’s the new president? That’s the fault of the curas,’ Perez said, adding so softly I had to strain to hear him as we rambled away, ‘School and curas. Never liked them and never will.’

Unexpectedly, Black Face screamed something at us. The jumbled words reached my ears with the force of a slapping wind as we hurried down the street. For a moment, I couldn’t comprehend what he was saying and then, finally, I did.

‘It’s Batista, cabrones. You hear me? Batista! That’s the name of your new president. And he’s black too. Like me.’

Interwoven by Michelle Montebello

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Michelle will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Belle Hamilton is a romantic at heart. She's engaged to the love of her life and dreams of marriage, children and a happily ever after. Belle’s world is close to perfect until one afternoon she makes a decision she can't take back.

In the blink of an eye, Belle’s life spirals out of control. She loses everything that is dear to her and is forced to flee to the other side of the world where she meets Andrea, a local bartender from Rome, and develops an unexpected connection with him.

Can they break through the complications of past hurts and a long-distance relationship to make it work or will one terrifying night in Paris end it before it had a chance to begin?

Read an exclusive excerpt:

The view from the back garden was one of the best of the house. Perched high above the foreshore, it drank in the shimmering blue water, as yachts sailed lazily by and the Sydney Harbour Bridge stood magnificent and arching in the distance.

Mrs Sutton had laid out a lemon cake, a plate of her famous melting moments, and tea and coffee.

Belle took a seat and Grace smiled at Mrs Sutton.

‘We can pour and serve thanks, Beryl.’

Mrs Sutton nodded and retreated to the kitchen.

‘She’s wonderful,’ Grace said, arranging cups and saucers around the table. ‘Especially so when you were young. I don’t know what I would’ve done without her. Your father wasn’t particularly good with babies.’

‘Do they have much to do around the house? I mean, it’s just you and Dad now.’

‘Oh, not really. But I like having them here. I’d be rather lonely without them,’ she said, almost wistfully. ‘Tea or coffee, sweetheart?’

‘Coffee thanks, Mum.’

Edward joined them a few minutes later, scraping back his chair to sit down, and Grace poured him a cup of coffee—black, no sugar. Belle watched him sip, then take a plate, serve himself a slice of cake and take another sip. He was silent, deliberate in his apathy. She fought the urge to shake him as they sat around the table in some strange carbon copy of family life.

‘Edward, Ben was here earlier to see you,’ Grace said, passing Belle a cup of coffee across the table with a wink. ‘It would be nice to hear what he had to say.’

Edward raised his eyebrows at the question. ‘Why doesn’t she ask him herself? He’s her fiancé.’

‘I’ve tried talking to him but he won’t answer my calls,’ Belle explained. ‘Last night, I … I caught him in bed with someone else.’

Grace gasped from across the table. ‘My goodness! Edward?’

‘Yes, yes, I know all the details,’ he said. ‘He’s already told me. And I don’t condone his behaviour but we can’t deny that it’s been coming to this.’

‘Coming to this? What do you mean?’ Belle was confused.

‘He’s been very unhappy.’

‘About what?’

‘Ask him! I’m not getting involved.’

Belle frowned. Not getting involved. Really?

‘You’ve brought this on yourself, I’m afraid,’ Edward said. ‘Gallivanting around with that Alexander girl. She’s a no-good harlot who has far too much time and money on her hands and a reputation at that.’

‘Please let’s not bring Riley into this,’ Grace said, and he grumbled something about the Alexanders into his coffee.

‘Dad, I still don’t understand what’s going on with Ben.’

‘What’s not to understand? Benjamin’s actions speak for themselves. He’s frustrated. He’s had enough.’

‘Of what?’

‘Of not being able to view you as an equal. An ambitious boy like Benjamin needs someone who will challenge him, motivate him. He doesn’t think you’re capable of that.’

‘So he climbs into bed with someone else?’

‘He handled it badly. Everyone makes mistakes.’

Belle scoffed.

‘You can’t blame him for wanting to better himself.’

‘I don’t blame him for that.’

‘The girl he’s met is from a prominent family. They’ll open all kinds of doors for young Benjamin.’

‘You mean the girl I caught him with?’

‘Yes. And I know her father personally. He’s an impressive man.’

Belle fell silent as she stared across the harbour. It was hard to believe they were talking about the same Ben. Her Ben.

‘If you’d studied law like I told you to, if you’d listened to all the advice I’d been giving you over the years, maybe you would’ve had more in common with him. Maybe you would’ve been able to keep up.’

Belle cast her eyes down at her coffee. ‘So what you’re really saying is I’m not good enough for him.’

Edward sniffed an unspoken confirmation.

‘Edward, you’re being unfair,’ Grace interjected. ‘Belle’s not the one who cheated here.’

‘I’m just telling you what he told me.’

‘Did he say anything else, Dad? Did he say if the wedding was off?’

Edward drained the last of his coffee, looking amused at her question. ‘You caught your fiancé being indiscreet. Wouldn’t you say the wedding was off?’ He dabbed at the corners of his mouth with a napkin and rose from his chair with a huff. ‘Now if you’ll excuse me, between you and Benjamin, I’ve gotten absolutely no work done today.’

He turned and marched back inside to his office, leaving Belle and Grace to stare at each other in mute discombobulation.

One Night in Havana by Kathleen Rowland

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Kathleen Rowland will be awarding a $30 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A desperate competition and sizzling attraction leads to dangerous desire.

New York Marine biologist Veronica “Roni” Keane is attending the Havana Bay Conference in Cuba. Tomorrow only one grant will be awarded which will provide the winner with professional recognition, resources for a project, and living expenses for two years. She hopes to continue her deceased father’s work, but smooth operator, Carlos Montoya, has won many grants in the past.

Carlos, a freelancer for the Havana Port Authority, works to help protect Havana’s reputation as a bastion of safety. As international travelers flock to the island, attracted by its 1950’s time-warp and colonial architecture, the drug business is running rampant, particularly on Roni’s cruise ship. Something’s not right, and when her scuba tanks are tampered with, Carlos brings in the military police to investigate. For her safety, he keeps her close, but he craves her body.

Their attraction leads to a fun night with a bit of kink. But Roni finds herself in more trouble than she bargained for when the criminals blame her for alerting the military police and come looking for her. Can Roni trust Carlos to protect her? Will she stay in Havana if Carlos wins the coveted grant, or kiss her lover goodbye?

Read an excerpt:

Through binoculars, Carlos Montoya had been watching Veronica when she’d had a conversation with a security guard from the cruise ship in question. As a part-time Cuban border enforcer, he was aware of all of the different ways dirt-bags smuggled crap into and out of Cuba. He worked this job to stop them.

Something made her nervous. Now onboard, he'd smothered a smile when she watched the action heat up across the water. Time for a bit of fun. She was a fish out of water when it came to drug transport via cruise ships.

He had his eyes where hers were, on tonight's final loading of drugs across the channel. Some shady characters he'd encountered through the past few years made regular nocturnal visits. Each night, a variety of activities took place with a procession of scantily clad women. Not that he'd get an opportunity to try them out. He was stuck here on his boat until he nabbed the bad dudes. When this stint ended, he'd catch up with his grandmother’s tenant, a woman with an edgy, artsy vibe that suited her business of running a hair salon. If she weren’t available, he'd find a pretty vacationer looking for fun. Too bad Veronica would be heading home in twenty-four hours.

Tonight's boredom had disappeared when his competitor in the black silk dress had dropped in and inched along to the back of his boat.

Carlos had stood inside and watched from the hatch as she leaned against the side of the cabin so close to the hatch, he could have reached out and touched her with a hand. Sometimes people under the influence stepped onto the wrong boat. There were plenty of drugs if someone knew basic operations.. This wasn't the case. She made her way to the back of his boat with purpose. She sat her adorable ass on an old life jacket for a perfect vantage point.

Is love waiting once again at the next port of call?

Sensuality Level: Sensual

Read an excerpt from Magic Moment by Angela Adams:

Laura is having lunch at the local diner when two FBI agents approach her and insist she come down to headquarters and answer a few questions. A bewildered Laura finds Chase Donovan, her boss’s son, coming to her aid.

“Laura works for my father,” Chase said. “If I don’t see some identification, she’s not going anywhere with you.” To prove his point, his hand moved downward and his fingers wrapped gently around her forearm.

Chase also worked for his father, although what his role was within the business was generally debatable among the clientele. This was so embarrassing. In the three years Laura had worked as Dick Donovan’s bookkeeper, her conversations with his son had been work-related or cordial exchanges about the weather. If there was any chance of the floor opening up and swallowing her, she considered now the perfect time.

She turned to Chase. “Thank you for your concern. I’ve seen their identification.” She didn’t mention the hasty badge flip. “They have me confused with someone else. I’ll take care of the error, and get back to the office as soon as I can.”

“Let me go with you.” Chase tossed the men a wary glance. He still held her arm. “You should have an attorney.”

Laura winced, truly mortified. There was no need for an attorney or involving Chase Donovan in calling one. She had done nothing illegal. “I’m fine.”
