God wasn’t answering my prayers, so I made a deal with God. In addition to the prayers forced out of me each morning and before I went to sleep, I began to read the Book of Psalms in the Bible. I figured God would answer my prayers when I got to the end. I read every chapter in the Book of Psalms, but still there was no help, so I extended the deadline to reading the entire New Testament. I read it through each morning and night, but still no help, so I extended the mission even further to reading the Bible in its entirety, from Genesis to Revelation.
As I read the Old Testament, I wondered if God’s failure to answer my previous requests was added proof that He did not exist or simply didn’t care. The more I read and prayed, the more the burnings seemed to increase. I continued to fight to not lose consciousness. I refused to go under without a fight. I fought with all my might. I yelled out God’s name, calling for His help. I repeated The Lord’s Prayer or the Shepherd’s Psalm until I lost consciousness. My prayers became more desperate, with tears and supplications. I finished reading the Book of Genesis without trouble, but for some reason, when I got to Exodus, I lost control when Moses ascended to Mt. Sinai, communicated with God, and descended with the Ten Commandments. I began pounding the Bible at this section. I erupted in tears and beseeched God, saying, “God, I need help! You have to help me! You have to help me! You have to exist! You must exist! The Man is going to kill me one of these days!”
