Top Ten Tuesday: Books Out of My Comfort Zone

November 8: Ten Books That I Read That Were Outside Of My Comfort Zone (whether you liked them or not)

Disclaimer: I am an eclectic reader and there aren't many books I've found that are outside my comfort zone--if a book is TOO far outside my comfort zone, I'll tend to put it down and not finish it. Life's too short to spend on books I'm not enjoying. I did finally manage to come up with some books that left me ...uneasy...after reading them.

1. Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov
2. The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman
3. Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank
4. Night by Elie Wiesel
5. Flowers in the Attic by Virginia Andrews
6. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (okay, I actually never finished this one)

Only 7 out of 10... that's what happens when you read anything...even the back of a cereal box!!! LOL

  1. I never finished Dragon Tattoo either. Normally I enjoy these sorts of mystery/crime books but this one was so HORRIBLY translated making it almost impossible to read. Ugh. Hopefully the movie will be better!

  2. I loved the Diary of Anne Frank, but I think it left us all a bit uneasy, as would Elie Weisel's Night trilogy, I expect (though I haven't gotten around to it yet). None of the others have managed to woo me into reading them. I've considered Dragon Tattoo several times, but never actually picked it up and opened it. Sounds like maybe it's just as well!

  3. Oh darn, Lolita is one of my favorites. I'm on the fence about reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo because it seems to be on so many lists.

  4. I hate that I steer clear of Holocaust now a days. Read too many. Other stories to read & other genocides. What a pick me up?

  5. I like to read cereal boxes too. I got through the first three Twilight books, but that 4th one left me feeling a little bit sick. Thanks for stopping by today.

  6. Flowers in the Attic definitely belongs on my list too. Thanks for stopping by.

  7. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's pretty good! I had to keep at it for a bit in the beginning.. like about 100 pages or so before the story picked up more...

    Thanks for stopping by!

  9. I had a hard time making my list today too, being a pretty eclectic reading myself. That last one you listed though... yeah... I don't think I'll ever read it.

  10. Golden Compass had been on my wish list forever...maybe someday I'll get around to it. Twilight I read before all the hype, and before much better series so I was able to enjoy it (which is also why I'll probably never re-read it; wouldn't want to tarnish my memories! lol)

    Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Am I the only one who loved Lolita? Okay so the second half wasn't as well written, but in general I found it to be an impressive book and I loved how it messed with my head and my emotions. But I like confronting books and books that make me uncomfortable, as long as they're well written and make me think. And I love getting to read a story from the perspective of someone who you have nothing in common with. It's hard to say I "enjoyed" reading it though, because pedophiles - and rapists - make me see red. I've seen this book on a few lists today, unsurprisingly.

    Thanks for visiting my blog!

  12. I forgot about Flowers in the Attic - actually anything by V.C Andrews wouldn't be out of place on my list!

  15. Is it crazy that I couldn't read Diary of Anne Frank because I got easily annoyed at how she kept talking about the boys that liked her? :(

  16. All these comments about Flowers in the Attic got me intrigued, I now have to check it out!

I hestitated about the Golden Compass, but I think I still like it actually.

  17. Lolita is so far outside my comfort zone that, despite rave reviews from almost everyone who dares to read the book, I think I will never read it.

  18. For some reason, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo doesn't really appeal to me. I don't know why. But so many people keep telling me it's good so I'm sure I'll eventually try reading it anyway. Lol. I loved Diary of Anne Frank. And Lolita surprised me too, despite that it was a bit taboo. I haven't read Golden Compass yet. It has been on my TBR list for a long time though and I saw the movie and liked it. Of course everyone who has seen the movie tells me the book series is quite different. I'm looking forward to reading that one. :)

Hope you're having a great week and thanks for dropping by my blog. :) You have a nice place here!

  19. The Diary of Anne Frank is a difficult book to read, mostly because you find out exactly what happens to her afterwards. It's a sad read.
