Chasing Lacey by January Bain

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. January Bain will be awarding $25.00 via Paypal to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Think being a PI is all dull divorce cases? Think again.

Lacey Cameron, private investigator and treasure hunter, takes being headstrong and passionate to a whole new level. It takes exactly one morning in a school teaching young minds for her and her identical twin sister to break the whiteboard pointer in half, throw their keys on the teacher’s desk, and heed the seductive call of wide open spaces and awesome adventures.

William James Thornton III, a renaissance man and warrior poet who defended his country in Iraq and Afghanistan, knows he’s got his hands full trying to get Lacey to see him as more than just a friend. He’s ready to settle down, marry the woman of his dreams, and make his mother a happy grandmother. Hell, he’s got enough treasure in his bank account for two lifetimes.

And then things go from normal craziness to extremely dangerous in a heartbeat as hired killers are sent after Will and Lacey to prevent them from discovering the truth. They stumble on such an unexpected twist to the story that no one in their right mind would believe it or have suspected. If Will can get them out of this mess, he vows to lay all his cards on the table with Lacey. Get her to recognize what they can share as a couple. Passion. Love. And a commitment to blending her wild nature with his own—the perfect spicy blend. Even if it looks like it might just be the death of him.

Read an Excerpt

Grasping the cross like a vampire hunter and mentally crossing herself with a prayer, she kept the leviathan in her sights. A macabre dance with death began. one she was determined to win—had to win. It would have been made a whole lot easier with an outcropping at her back, but she was in shallow waters, close to shore with no hope of that. He lunged without warning, opening his mouth and re-exposing ivories gleaming evilly in case she’d missed them the first time around. Don’t worry, I get the picture. His humongous body moved fast as sheet lightning, preparing to strike.

Steady. Steady.

But instead of grasping the expected flesh and bone of a leg, he got a sharp jab in the eye for his trouble. Her father’s angry face flashed in her mind. She struck out. Harder.

Take that! If only her mother had flattened him just once, had fought back, like she herself did when practicing her karate moves. No man was ever going to get the drop on her. She’d fight tooth and nail, take them down with her, if necessary.

But the big fish didn’t learn his lesson either. Kept coming. Need conformation, eh, that I’m a force to be reckoned with. She struck again, punching him right in the snout, the cross a decent substitute for the spear, if she didn’t mind the close, disgusting quarters of a shark with food stuck in his teeth. The guy needed a good dentist. Pronto.

Breathe.

He backed off. She threatened with a gesture.

He parried again, a shark who obviously practiced evasive sword-fencing techniques. What was his problem? If it was hunger, she was less than sympathetic. Besides, to this gigantic beast, she was just a morsel. Go after something your own size.

A movement in the water to her left drew her attention for a micro-second, but she could ill afford to check out what her peripheral vision hinted at. Keep your eyes on him. Turn from a shark, especially run from a shark, and he thinks he’s found his din-din.

A spear whizzed by her shoulder, but instead of sinking into the sand-paper-like thick hide, it flew on by, entirely missing its target. She groaned and quickly moved her physical body between her sister and the shark, her heart in her throat. Had Lily missed because she couldn’t bear to hurt another living being, or because she was a terrible shot? Because now he was a whole lot more confident, looming larger than life and almost grinning at his prey. Them.

Alex Kennedy knows he's a rascal. A rogue. An arrogant bastard. He wreaked havoc on his best friend's marriage by falling in love with his best friend's wife, and now he's trying to move on. Sex, drugs, booze, boys, girls and toys. He's hell-bent on forgetting the past and running toward a future he doesn't believe he deserves, only to discover the truth in moments of disarray.

Read an Excerpt:

He pulled out the first pair of soft pajama bottoms he could find. They were the Hello Kitty pair he ought to have thrown out long ago, and after he tugged them on, he sat on the bed with his head in hands for a long time.

The pajamas made him think of Anne, which made him think of Jamie, and wouldn’t it have been the perfect hour of the night to call the number of the house on the lake and talk to one or both of them? To ask them if he could come…home, Alex thought, and clapped a hand over his mouth to stop the small cry from leaking out. Anne and Jamie’s house could never again be his home. He’d ruined that the summer he’d stayed there, and if it had been salvageable, he’d ruined it again for good after what had happened later, with Jamie. After seeing Anne in Cleveland, Alex knew there was no way he could ever take that sort of advantage again.

“I hope the thought of never touching me again makes you want to die,” Anne had told him that night, but he would die rather than hurt her again. Of all the things in his life he’d messed up, he would never forgive himself for what he’d done to Anne Kinney. Even if she forgave him for it.

How many secrets can the Queen City conceal?

Charlotte, NC - 1966

After a head injury on the basketball court, Tony Malone, a firefighter, confides in his best friend and captain, Steve, about a strange dream he had while unconscious. It was as if he were living a different life. Steve brushes it off as related to his injury, but Tony begins to experience more phenomena with these new memories, unbeknownst to his wife, Lana. Tony struggles to live with his secret until a fire opens up a whole new world.

Charlotte, NC - 1996

Chuck Thomas began his ascent to greatness at a graphic design firm headed by Elizabeth Wheaton, the battle-ax of the Queen City corporate scene. A series of Chuck’s immoral decisions leaves the very powerful Wheaton with a raging vendetta. The playboy eventually meets Valerie Meyers, a shy girl with a complicated past, and the two marry. Their idyllic life is halted by a suspicious brush with death leaving Valerie once again picking up the pieces.

Two Souls, Too Many Questions

Literally torn between two worlds, Valerie must once again deal with the loss of her husband and come to terms with what happened to Chuck Thomas and who Tony Malone really was.

Read an Excerpt:

After a few sideways looks from the attendees, Dr. Paul suggested they walk to the parking garage together. They were so caught up in conversation that didn’t revolve around Chuck, the coma, or the medical world, an hour had quickly passed. Valerie leaned back onto the bumper of her Jeep and tilted her porcelain face up towards Dr. Paul. It felt as though the thick air were a magnet, drawing them inexplicably to each other in that moment. Before they knew it, the pair found themselves in the midst of a soft, sensual kiss. Pausing for a moment, they looked into each other’s eyes, unable to refrain from the tension that had been building for years. After a few passionate moments, Valerie willed herself to gently push him away. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. That can never happen again,” Valerie stuttered as she walked around the Jeep and reached for the handle. Dr. Paul stood frozen in his place, mesmerized by her every move. Without a word from the doctor or a second glance from Valerie, the blue Jeep sped out of the parking garage.

The King's Favorite by Tanya Anne Crosby

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Tanya will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Fearing her “gifts” will be used to defeat her sister Matilda, Elspeth escapes the Black Mountain priory that has sheltered them since their father's death, only to find herself indebted to, of all men, a Scotsman, whose loyalties are in question...

Read an Excerpt:

Bolting in a direction he would never have led her—into a thick cloud of fog—Merry Bells hurled over a low-lying bush, and even before Malcom could think to ask how she could possibly know such a thing, they stepped outside the curtain of fog, under a bright spring sky. Stunned though he might be, he knew they hadn’t time to waste. The barking grew frenzied as he urged Merry Bells into a full canter.

“Thank you,” she said, and Malcom felt her shiver.

Feeling strangely protective over the lass, he slid an arm about her waist.

By damn, like his Da, he must be a bloody fool for a lady in distress because he knew beyond a shadow of doubt, as they flew over brush and bracken, that he wouldn’t give the girl up, no matter how many Welshmen’s arrows were trained at his back. They could riddle him with holes and he would take his last breath defending her. He wasn’t about to leave her to whatever fate those men intended to deliver. Leaving the barking and chorus of shouts in their wake, Merry Bells swallowed the ground that rose to greet them, and soon enough, the woodlands gave way to moorlands, the Welsh countryside vanished before England. All the prideful words that had been spoken between them were cast aside like dust in their wake.

Stranded in Love by Victoria Grant

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Victoria Grant will be awarding 3 signed paperback copies of the book to randomly drawn winners (North America Only) via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I’m a romantic person, I always have been, always will be. Writing romances is fun and exciting and I love it! I won’t deny I’m a girly girl, I love satin and lace and all things pretty and sparkly, as well as having doors opened for me. I know there are lots of readers out there who love that, too. I always write happily ever afters, never a cliffhanger, but only after I’ve put my leading characters on the wild ride of that roller coaster of love.:-)

What research is required?

There’s always some research required for every novel, the type and depth of it depends on what I need to know more about – either a character’s job description or something specific about a location I want to use as a setting, or even how to prepare a certain recipe. I usually enjoy doing research for my novels and I always learn something when I’m sorting through the facts.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

That you should always recharge your cell phone battery before heading out for the day, and it doesn’t hurt to keep a recharge cord in the car, just in case. And, more importantly, never give up fighting for what you want.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I listen to music to inspire me. I usually write to either big band tunes or oldies from the 1960s & 70s. When I write love scenes, or other tender moments, I like to listen to classical music without vocals, as it helps me reach those deeper emotions that I need to get onto the page.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’m a big time plotter. For my Calderone Family Romance Series, I had a lot of fun creating spreadsheets for the entire family (including their likes/dislikes, birthdates, what car they drive, etc.), I even have a seating plan for the Calderone dining table – just so I can see at a glance where each character sits - it has to be the same for every novel or it would be too confusing for the reader (and me!). I also have spreadsheets for each individual novel focusing on plot lines and family dynamics, which I may never use, but it helps that I know it.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

On my desk to my right sits my cell phone, my ereader, and a framed photograph of me and my husband taken on our wedding day. Just beyond that is a bookshelf that is overflowing (I guess it’s time for another trip to Ikea!). On the top of the bookshelf is a pretty butterfly infuser lamp, my favourite teddy bear, and more books (including Stranded in Love).

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Yes, lots! Stranded in Love is Book #1 in the Calderone Family Romance Series focusing on the only daughter in the family, Laney. Book #2, Write to Love, will be available next year. It’s the story of Noel, the youngest brother and playboy of the family, and the problems that develop when he meets feisty KC Dunlop, a newly published murder mystery author.

I’m currently finishing Book #6, the final book in this series, which tells the story of their parents, Eve and Boyd, and the difficulties they had to deal with to find happiness.

Do you have a question for our readers?

I’d like to ask your readers to take a chance on a new author because Stranded in Love is a sexy, fun, ‘can’t put it down’ romantic comedy that’s getting some wonderful reviews, and each subsequent novel in the Calderone Family Romance Series will be just as exciting to read. And I’d love to hear from your readers, so please drop me a line and let me know how you liked my debut novel.

Thanks for letting me be part of your Blog today!

If a gold medal was awarded for Worst Day Ever, Laney Calderone would win it today, hands down. She’s just discovered she's pregnant, her fiancé abruptly dumps her when she tells him, and her new car refuses to start as a brutal snowstorm hits Toronto.

Good Samaritan Tyler Hammond offers to take her home; however, with the heavy snow falling and his patience dwindling, Laney’s gold medal day isn’t over yet.

Storms intensify both outside and in as Laney finds herself inexplicably attracted to this tall, dark and very handsome but infuriating stranger.

Can Laney fight her unwanted yet increasing desire for this man long enough to get through the relentless storm? And will Tyler let her walk out of his life as easily as she came into it?

Read an excerpt:

Tyler took Laney into his arms and pulled her close. The music changed to that unforgettable jazz melody she knew so well, and out of the corner of her eye she noticed Stephen on the balcony with the band leader, a devilish grin on his face. Up to his old tricks again.

“You look ravishing tonight, Ginger.” Tyler whispered in her ear. “Did I ever tell you red is my favourite colour?”

Laney tried to move to the rhythm except her feet would not obey. She felt clumsy and self-conscious dancing with Tyler with so many people watching, especially her family.

“You feel a little tense, my love. Relax and enjoy.”

She closed her eyes wishing she could walk away, but that wasn’t going to happen. Tyler held her tight and guided her effortlessly around the floor. The mesmerizing scent of his cologne reverberated through her senses and she surprised herself when she realized she was smiling. The Tyler Trap, she thought. You’ve gotten stuck in it again, you idiot!

With a deep sigh, she let herself surrender and leaned into him. He smiled and pulled her even closer. It didn’t matter to her anymore who saw them, who noticed they were so close; she didn’t care.

As she floated around the hall Laney became immersed in her surroundings. The Christmas tree lights twinkling, the distant chatter and laughter of the guests, the captivating tune, and the wonderful feel of this amazing man in her arms.

Laney wanted to freeze time again. This man, this music, this moment. She rested her chin on his shoulder and let him take complete control. They moved as one, oblivious to every eye on them as they soared in the clouds, leaving all the other guests back on Earth.

About the Author:
Born in England to a Monty Python-loving dad and a Lawrence Welk-loving mum - tea drinkers all - we moved to Canada when I was seven. "Say book, say look" my new classmates would hound me just so they could have a good chuckle at my accent. But being incredibly shy, this was a great way for me to make friends.

My love of words and a creative imagination prompted English teachers to urge me to write for a living, especially after I got a letter from the Prime Minister who thanked me for writing to him! So cool for a twelve-year-old!

Through the years, I wrote while I earned a living as an Administrative Assistant in various companies; then I owned a Wedding Coordination business for six years (talk about romance!), all the while being happily married to the love of my life. These interesting jobs plus wedded bliss gave me oodles of ideas for romantic plot lines, tall, dark and handsome heroes and feisty, beautiful heroines, and, of course, the happily ever afters.

I currently live in Mississauga and spend time with family and friends, and struggle daily with the wine and chocolate that somehow magically appear in my house...

And, amidst the endless cups of strong tea, while the dead parrot sketch and Cole Porter songs whirl around in my brain, I write. I will always write romances because I love creating fascinating characters whose lives I can make completely miserable before I give them their happily ever after.

Storms Over Babylon by Jennifer Macaire

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jennifer Macaire will be awarding a digital copy of all books in the series, so far books I – IV, to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

From the scorching plains of Persia to the opulent city of Babylon, Ashley and Alexander continue their sensuous and passionate journey through history. Alexander the Great is now king of Persia and Greece but his reign will be short. Time-travelling Ashley knows when her husband will die. She's determined to cheat Fate and save Alexander and her children, even if it brings the gates of time crashing down. Following Alexander on a tour of his new kingdom, she plans her moves and bides her time. She must, however, convince Alexander to abandon his crown and his kingdom.

Read an Excerpt:

We lay on the bed and he kissed me. At first I couldn’t talk, and then I didn’t want to as our movements quickened and grew more urgent, searching for the release we both knew the other had the power to give. Much later, when I felt the pulse in his neck slow, I was ready to speak, but I still didn’t know what to say.

“I’m going to have a baby.” I decided to start with the good news first.

Alexander sat up in the bed. There was enough moonlight coming through the window to show me his face. His eyes were shining, one light, one dark. He smiled, and his teeth seemed to glow in the darkness. “That’s wonderful,” He whispered. “Was that why you fainted during the wedding? I was so afraid that it was because you were upset I’d married Stateira again. However, it made her happy, and I remembered what you said, that she would die soon after I do. I feel so helpless,” He went on, his voice tightening. “I wish I could do something. She’s a nice enough girl and she would so love to stay in Babylon and rule the city. She’s quite good at politics actually. Then I thought maybe it was because Plexis was marrying Drypetis, but no, that’s not it.” He went on in a rush. “You were so happy when he told you he was getting married, and you couldn’t have teased him so much if you were really hurting. Besides, you know how much he loves you and Chiron. I think I was more jealous than you were. When Drypetis asked me if she could marry him, it gave me a shock. I never knew how much I really loved him until...” He broke off and bit his lip. “I’m sorry. I should let you speak.” His voice was breathless, his color hectic. I wondered if he was drunk. But there was no wine on his breath, he was simply all nerves.

“I don’t know how to tell you this,” I said painfully.

“Is it harder than telling me about my own death?” He asked, a note of teasing in his voice.

“Yes,” I was sad.

He caught my mood and sobered immediately. “Is it Chiron?” He asked quickly. “Is he ill?”

“No.” I threw my head back and groaned. “Oh no, I can’t! I can’t do this! “I started to sob.

Alexander grew frightened. I had managed to stay calm for so long, through so much, that when I fell apart he immediately assumed the worst. “Is it you?” He asked. “Are you dying?”

“No. No I’m fine.” I wiped my eyes. “It’s just something I remembered during the wedding ceremony.”

“During the ceremony, When you were watching me and Stateira? Or Plexis...”His voice trailed off as he watched my face carefully. I had flinched. “Is it Plexis?” He breathed.

My shoulders sagged. I put my face in my hands.

“Plexis. Will he die then? Is that it?” It was a whisper. Pain tightened his throat.

“I’m sorry. It was the name. Plexis didn’t mean anything to me. I’d never read anything about him. I realized during the ceremony that…that Hephaestion died.”

The Multima Scheme by Gary D. McGugan

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Can Multima Corporation withstand another attack from organized crime? While billionaire John George Mortimer copes with treatment for cancer, the accomplished CEO must also ward off challenges for control of his sprawling fictional American empire both from within the company and from nefarious powers operating outside the law.

The Multima Scheme is a fast-paced account of the lengths to which organized crime can infiltrate large global corporations and seize control of respected businesses to conceal activities that are both illegal and immoral but generate billions. It’s also a story of survival – how individuals and organizations might react under intense pressures and the ease with which people can cross lines between what’s legal and what’s not.

Using his knowledge of how large multinationals operate – accumulated over 40 years working with major corporations around the world – author Gary D. McGugan weaves a tale of intrigue using a writing style that readers will find hard to put down once started.

Read an excerpt:

Howard Knight felt his pulse quicken as he glanced down at his watch. All hell was about to break loose in New York. His secretary would tell the waiting FBI agent something like, “It’s probably just a traffic delay. Mr. Knight is always punctual and will be here soon for your scheduled meeting.” Likely, she’d also offer coffee, and no doubt make small talk while they both waited.

In a few minutes, she’d give up and call Knight’s spouse at home. His wife would repeat the exact lie he told her the day before while his limousine sped towards Page Field in Fort Myers, Florida. She’d tell his secretary Knight wasn’t actually in New York. He was away solving some sort of business crisis in Brazil. Almost certainly, his assistant would become alarmed and immediately contact the pilots of the company’s jet.

It might take her some time to reach them. Both the pilot and co-pilot would be gradually recovering from a period of incapacitation but would eventually tell the secretary what little they could remember. They wouldn’t have much to divulge though, and would remain groggy throughout the rest of the morning.

Meet the Author:
A successful business leader, speaker, and author, my most recent work is an exciting novel, The Multima Scheme.

I'm in love with the same special lady for almost five decades. In turn, we love -- and are incredibly proud of -- our daughter, our son, their spouses, and three remarkable grandchildren.

Family, friends, and hundreds of other wonderful people also populate my life, repeatedly creating rewarding experiences. I’ve had all this good fortune for many years, with reading and writing often playing integral roles.

I’ve loved reading as long as I remember and have enjoyed writing for just as long. For me, writing has taken many forms. Like most, it started with assigned essays as a student and then evolved with my business career. I’ve written letters, speeches, reports, ads, brochures, presentations, proposals, articles, and a blog. My first book was a work of non-fiction – NEEDS Selling Solutions – co-authored with my friend Jeff Allen.

As Craige Ingram climbed the stairs of the derelict building, that peculiar stench of a dead body hit him. It was the same smell no matter where—SpecOps SEAL encounter gone sour, or in a vacant, roach-infested apartment. Inside, his SEAL buddy-turned head of Buckingham Parish Homicide’s Investigative Support Division, Grayson MacGerald, was huddled with the coroner next to a swollen decaying corpse that was days old and hardly more than oozing dead meat. The PI inside Craige had a gut feeling that there was more to this than a dead body, and Craige’s Grannie always told him, “Trust your feelin’s.” But that was before Mihály Keaulescu set down two of his Black Falcon choppers on Craige’s Moccasin Hollow private airstrip in an uninvited stopover. It got worse. From his airstrip to Israel, to Turkey and a nightmare-dream of one-of-a-kind ancient artifacts that not only threatened the serene life Craige knew and loved at Moccasin Hollow, it would destroy the world.

Read an Excerpt:

Craige cinched his chinstrap tighter and in the distance, glimpsed a profile of what looked to be a Bell Textron’s 62X KW warrior carrying an ALQ 131 or a 144 or a modified 147A white-noise jammer in the crook of his arm. Craige pressed his goggles to the ground tighter. Ready as he could get for the back-blast inferno and flesh-boiling incandescence. The ground punched his belly. He felt more than heard the rumbling plasma-searing waves tearing the ground with seismic jolting thuds. The pressure waves jarred his eardrums.

Follow-up chopper runs unleashed a consuming churning hell along the steep walls and dry wadi. Low-altitude chopper sorties took over with end-of-the-world sunbursts sterilizing a morass of targets. Laser guided missiles pulverized crumpled ledges and overhangs into igneous mini-lahars. Bunker buster smart bombs whistled into caves smashing tunnel walls, roasting any bottom feeders hiding inside. Secondary strikes continued, napalm, thermite, and phosphorous blanketed the area. The smothering white-heat boiled in the solar-hot overkill incineration of containers of stored Marburg-Ebolapox, leaving a sterile landscape of glazed sand, gravel, vaporized odds-and-ends, and a few recognizable body parts. The fearful kill-beauty of magenta and mauve mushrooms and cherry-white red-orange acrid plumes left the eerie shimmering moonscape. Avram ordered re-targeting the whole valley, including the passageways that had been tunneled into. He was taking no chances.

Craige felt a sad lament as the gunships made their final runs, missiles and bombs slammed into the mountain. Undiscovered artifacts destroyed, the site possibly entombed beyond recovery. It wasn’t the worst of what might’ve been. If the virus had been loosed, there’d be damn few survivors.

The Wandering Land by Jamie Killen

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jamie will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

On a summer night in a sunbaked desert city, the wandering land appears. A fairytale village nestled in dense forest, it is a place of ruined castles, abandoned treasures, and strange creatures living in the shadows. Brought together by this impossible place are five visitors: failed painter Eli; art professor Amal; young lovers Darcy and Wes; and mysterious, haunted Coyote. Together they explore their own secret village, an entire world hidden in plain sight.

But there is darkness beneath the magic, a force pulling the visitors deeper and deeper into the place’s mysteries. As the boundaries between the secret land and the outside world begin to collapse, each of the visitors is confronted with visions of an otherworldly child, a child whose existence holds the key to understanding everything about the place that has drawn them together.

Who is this child? Why did she choose them? And will she ever let them go?

Read an exclusive excerpt:

“Tell me one.”

Amal let out a little groan as Val hit a pressure point. “Told you, I don’t know yet.”

Val sighed. “Well, one you’re thinking about. A rough draft. I won’t tell anyone.”

“Ok.” Amal thought for a moment. “Imagine all this with a painted acrylic background and comic-art figures, like a collage, although it’ll all be digital. And kind of slow, meandering guitar music in the background. There’s this isolated little village in the woods. It’s called Ballysherrin.”

“So it’s in Ireland.”

“Hush. Let me tell it.”

“Sorry.”

“No, it’s not anywhere real. So in Ballysherrin. . .” It took shape behind her eyes. “In Ballysherrin there’s this garden in front of one of the houses. And in this garden are plants that only bloom at night. They smell amazing. Anyone who passes by has to stop and see what these flowers are. And when they stop, they see that there are also fruits on this plant. White flowers and white fruits. And, of course, as delicious as it smells, they have no choice but to bite into one of the fruits. But inside the rind is just a key. A key made out of bone and teeth.”

“Gross,” Val muttered, but Amal pressed on.

“When you find this key, you notice the little stone building next to the garden. You thought it was just a shed before, but now you see the keyhole in the door. You turn the key and unlock the door.”

Val’s hands stopped moving against Amal’s back. “What’s inside?”

“The day you die.

1869 – Matthew Gentry joined the Confederate Army at eighteen years of age after an argument with his father, leaving Paradise, his Virginia home and famed horse breeding stables, for the fields of Gettysburg. Having survived the War Between the States, Gentry is haunted by the violence and inhumanity of the war. He continues to roam the country long after the conflict is over, finding solace in the arms of soiled doves and at the bottom of whiskey bottles. Finally traveling home after learning of a family tragedy, he nearly loses his life in a spring-flooded riverbed.

Annie Campbell, lone survivor of her family, lives at a remote farm near the North River, raising pigs and trying to grow enough to feed herself, and to stay out of the crosshairs of the Thurmans, violent men who run the town of Bridgewater. Annie’s secrets threaten her safety, even as she rescues and nurses Matthew Gentry.

Matthew knows he must return to Paradise, to grieve with his family. Will his heart lead him back to Bridgewater and Annie Campbell?

Read an Excerpt:

He watched as she sharpened his blade on a worn leather strop and ran a brush around a tin cup, making lather with the soap on the bottom. She walked up to him, close enough that he could feel her body heat up and down his right side, and he smelled hay and horse, and some faint note of wintergreen or peppermint. Her shirt gapped when she leaned around him to scrape his other cheek and he was pleased to note that he was interested in seeing the top of her breast, as at some point in the last few days he’d convinced himself that there were parts of him that might never recover.

“Almost done,” she said. “Tilt your head back and let me get your neck.”

He did as he was told and let the sun beat down on his face. Her fingers were strong, moving his chin one way or another or dabbing soap from around his ears and wiping his face clean with a piece of towel she’d dunked in a pan of water. The warm towel wiping his face felt better than anything he’d felt for a long while, and he relaxed his shoulders and let her wipe away two weeks’ worth of sweat and grit. His eyes closed and he let run her comb through his long, filthy hair.

“I need to bathe. I can smell my own stink.”

“I’m going to cut your hair while we’re out here. The weather’s temperate, so we could wash it without heating water.”

“I don’t care if the water’s cold. I’m tired of pulling it back with a string. Cut it. Cut it all off.”

She decides not to pull at threads. Despite her best efforts to remain blissfully oblivious, the secret to her life upgrade is soon uncovered when she finds herself invited to be part of a secret society.

The chosen ones, the Royals, hold the fate of the world in their hands. Will Olivia be able to bear the weight of the crown?

Confessions of a Shopaholic meets The Adjustment Bureau, this contemporary fairytale is both relatable and aspirational. Taking a look at the current balance of media and power with a healthy dose of humor, fashion, food and wanderlust.

Read an Excerpt:

I’m getting a very weird feeling. I consider turning around and leaving, but getting a cab on a cold rainy night before 2AM is going to be tough as they don’t begin frequenting the area until the bars start to close, and the nearest Uber appears to be 25 minutes away. Plus, I did go to all of this trouble to get my lazy self dressed and over here.

There is a crest engraved in brass metal on the front of the red door, an intricately designed crown and some lettering. I tilt my head to read it all the way around. ‘Alea iacta est memores acti prudentes uturi modus operandi’ I read aloud, and below, ‘Posteriori’. I recognize the language as Latin from the three weeks we spent on it during Intro to Languages, which was designed to help us choose one to focus on during our tenure at the university

Against my better judgment, I push on the heavy door, which creaks open. I enter into a cold stone-walled hall with a stone slab floor, lit by what appears to be a row of fire lanterns on each side. I guess this place is a bit behind the times in converting, or maybe they think it’s super ironic and hipster to not jump on the modernization bandwagon. Or maybe it’s me. I’m not exactly the authority on architectural trends. Maybe converted vintage is over and re-vintaged vintage is back in. Ugh, I can’t wait until I’m old and have an excuse not to be hip.

I walk down a windy stone hallway that seems straight out of a period film. Wow, they are really taking this theme seriously. How cool would it be if this stuff was authentic? I take a few pictures with my phone just in case. I mean as Cultures Editor, it’s always nice to be the one to discover the next big thing, like Connor said.

As I round the corner I hear, before I see, a British male mumbling to himself, apparently in debate.

“It’s so bizarre. But it couldn’t be. Could it? Stranger things have happened.”

I find myself face to face with a short-ish man, though taller than me, with glasses, wearing a sports coat with suede elbow patches. I scream in surprise and jump about five feet in the air. He seems slightly taken aback as well but less jumpy than me, or at least less vocal about it. He’s good looking in an intellectual sort of way and his dark floppy hair is conservatively combed back. I’m not sure if he’s startled by our unexpected encounter or my scream, but he does a bit of a double back.

“Sorry,” he recovers charmingly, “I didn’t see you there.”

“No, me either.” I try to breathe. I feel like I know him from somewhere.”

“Stuart Stephens.” He proffers his hand in greeting.

“Olivia Grace Thorpland.” I shake his in return. “But you can call me Gigi.”

“Hello, Gigi. Nice to meet you.” He is impeccably mannered even after our near death collision. Must be the British thing.

“So are you here for the party too?” I inquire. “Do you know where it is?”

“Party?” he asks, confused. “No, I just had a meeting here.”

“Ah, I see,” I say, although I don’t, given the hour. I definitely know him from somewhere. Got it, he’s a comedian.

“Well, care to join me anyway?” I offer politely. After all, he’s British, I’m being a good ambassador. He appears a bit bewildered.

“No, thanks. I best be going.”

“Are you sure? My friends are in there.”

“Really? Your friends are in there?” He seems surprised to see where I’m gesturing.

“Yup,” I tell him confidently.

“Oh, well, thanks for the invite, but I’m completely sure. Thanks anyway,” comes his nervous reply. “But, can I ask you a question?” I nod. “Is this all, um, kosher?”

“I, I, don’t know.” I hesitate. Is he Jewish and British? Is that a thing?

“Well, I’ll let you get on “he says. “Have a good night.”

“You too. Bye,” I reply. And with that, we walk off in opposite directions.

Finally, I reach a semi-circled entryway that has the option of five doors, one straight ahead and two on either side. These are not your ordinary doors either. They are heavy, arched, rustic, dark brown, slated wooden doors. I’m not really in the mood to crash a wedding reception, murder, or worse, a live band performance; and, given that anything could be behind these doorways, I’m about to give up on this expedition completely, when one of the doors, the entryway smack dab in the center, starts to creak open, apparently of its own accord. A feeling of unexpected dread overtakes me. I brace myself, unsure of what to expect to find behind it.

Bark Twice for Danger by M.K. Scott

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Comic Con is in full-swing and all is well. But no sooner does the biggest event of the year begin before a mysterious wave of identify thefts overshadows the grand affair.

While Nala tries to rein in Karly’s efforts to use the con for dating purposes, she also finds herself the target of a brazen thief. If she and her crime-solving canine companion don’t find the culprit, her bank accounts could be wiped cleaned.

Can Nala and Max bring an end to the chaos before it’s too late?

Read an Excerpt:

Max’s nose dropped, and his lips went up in a doggy grin. “I have, but not recently. I was trying to remember how to bring my A game. It’s something about getting a girl to think you’re better than you are. Should we lie about how many cases we actually solved?”

It didn’t take a psychic to know her pooch had been listening to Elvin bragging to one of his guy friends. If that was a man’s definition of having an A game, Elvin so didn’t have it. Women recognized him as a hopeless geek seconds after meeting him. If they gave him a second thought, it was usually to set up their smart television or fix their laptop, which he could.

“That’s not what I meant. Sure, we want to look our best, but there is no reason to lie.” The two of them meandered back to building three, stepping over patches of hard packed dirt with a few sprigs of grass in it. Despite its current circumstances, the grass was making a valiant effort to survive, as possibly were some of the residents. The entire place had the feel of a temporary stop. Her mother would point out that was the whole purpose behind apartments. In her world, people who lived in shabby apartments did not need design services.

As they reached the correct apartment building, she’d counted the number of cases she’d solved, which was almost all of them. There was one date profile she’d looked up for a nervous dater, but by the time she’d discovered he had a habit of romancing wealthy women, her client refused to listen. The dossier still sat on her office desk. Her mother suggested mailing it in about three weeks before the woman lost everything.

Hot Mess by Laurie Palau

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Laurie Palau will be awarding a FREE 30 minute phone consultation to help address specific organizing challenges to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Today, Laurie is sharing five fun or interesting things about herself we might be surprised to discover!

My life is pretty much an open book, so when I was asked to share five things you’d probably never guess about me, it forced me to stop and think. Sure, I could tell you that I’m afraid of heights, or that my favorite food is pizza, but that’s sort of boring.

So here goes, in no particular order:

1. I make really good Cuban rice & beans. Yes, I’m a white girl married to a Cuban/Puerto Rican, so early into our relationship I learned how to cook rice and beans. No Minute Rice here peeps, we’re talking Spanish rice and black beans, seasoned properly with Adobo, and Grandma’s homemade sofrito, and if I do say so myself, they are slammin’.

2. When I laugh really hard, I pee my pants. I probably should be more embarrassed about this, (I know my kids are!), but here’s the deal- I birthed two kids, and regardless of how many Kegels I do, when my bestie and I get together and start laughing, I lose total control. You may as well bring out the Depends.

3. I’ve never had a cavity. Yeah, I know crazy, right? I suppose that it’s a combination of proper brushing, regular trips to the dentist, and good genetics.

4. My daughter is named after a superhero. So my husband was a major comic book reading geek when we met. He was determined to name our second child Logan (after Wolverine). Thankfully I liked the name and figured I could make it work whether we had a boy or girl. BTW, he still loves comics, but is much less of a geek than he was 20 years ago.

5. I have an amazing sense of direction. I don’t know if it’s because I pay attention, or have some sort of internal GPS, but I can figure out how to get most places without assistance. Moreover, I think it’s important to know multiple routes to get places (which drives my husband nuts!), so I always have a plan B.

Hopefully this gives you some interesting insight into this HOT MESS!

XOXO-

Laurie

Whether you’re naturally neat or a total chaos magnet, this informative and amusing guide takes an approach to organizing that’s as unique as you are. Let this witty little handbook be your new secret weapon in the war on disorder!

Read an excerpt:

We’ve talked a lot about organizing your stuff, but how about finding time in your day for you? Calendar clutter, in my opinion, is the driving force behind so much of our daily stress, anxiety, and frustration. So many of us run on autopilot, especially when the kids are small, or when we are busy taking care of ailing parents or building a career. It’s easy to see how we can lose sight of making time for other things in our life that are important, like self-care.

As a society, we have a difficult time knowing how to unplug. Life is filled with distractions, and unless you make a conscious effort to prioritize time for yourself, it will never happen. Maybe you want time to exercise, join a book club, volunteer, or take up a hobby, but figuring out the logistics may seem impossible.

...Only when I took a step back to look at what my goals were, and actually wrote down what I had been doing, was I able to see where I needed to change. Note the key phrase: “I needed to change.” I had to reclaim control over how I chose to spend my time.

Beachboy Murder by Sally J. Smith and Jean Steffens

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The authors will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Just as travel agent turned reluctant sleuth Gabby LeClair is starting to gain some of the Aloha spirit, a business consortium from Chicago breezes into the Aloha Lagoon resort and offers to buy her business. The offer is tempting...but so is hot helicopter pilot Rick Dawson, making it a difficult decision. One that becomes even more complicated when a dead body is discovered in Gabby's backyard, and she's suddenly thrust in the middle of a murder investigation!

The dead man is a former beachboy attendant from the island. With a trail of broken hearts—not to mention jealous rivals—leading up to the beachboy, Gabby tries to uncover just who had it in for the late lothario. Is the female of the species really more deadly than the male? Or has the beachboy scorned one too many women for some other man's liking?

Read an Excerpt:

Detective Ray wasn't on my list of top guys on the island. I'd had a drawn-out encounter with him the summer before. He was brusque and all business when he was working. I'd never interacted with him socially, so as far as I knew that was the way he was all the time.

He touched the brim of his straw skimmer. If it had been any other man, I would've thought the gesture charming, but on just-the-facts-ma'am Detective Ray, it seemed a little rote.

"Good morning, Miss LeClair."

"Detective." I waited.

Her curiosity nearly a tangible entity, Janet stood so close behind me that if I'd moved I would have bumped into her.

"Detective?" Her voice rose in surprise, but for once there was no inflection of flirtation in it.

"What can I do for you this early, Detective Ray?" I asked.

His cop's point of view took in both of us, and he touched his hat again. "I was just wondering, Miss LeClair,"—he paused, lifted his chin, and scratched under it—"if you"—he cast a speculative glance in Janet's direction—"have anything to do with the dead body in your back yard."

About the Author:
The USA Today best-selling writing team of Sally J. Smith (right brain) and Jean Steffens (left brain) make up equal halves of one totally functional writer’s mind. Creative and intuitive and organized and systematic? What could be better than that?

The two desert dwellers work together side-by-side, literally finishing each other’s sentences, putting together their novels faster and more efficiently than they ever could individually.

When their heads aren’t together over a manuscript, you’ll find them with their families, at a movie, the mall, or out-to-lunch—in the food sense, not the spaced-out sense, well…most of the time. Their current series include Jordan Welsh Mysteries, Mystic Isle Mysteries, Danger Cove Pet Sitter Mysteries, Aloha Lagoon Gabby LeClair Mysteries, and Digby Sloan Mysteries.
