Blank: Madam Doesn't Like That by Zhanna Hamilton

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Zhanna Hamilton will be awarding a $75 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Science fiction is a genre of possibilities. It’s a chance to explore and imagine the future or alternate realities. I find scifi both entertaining and inspiring.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Aura Swain, the former human turned military spy bot, makes her own rules and is unconventional. She’s a reminder that independent thought is both powerful and empowering.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

A mix of both. I outline all my stories, but I allow my intuition to guide me while writing. I’m flexible to change during the creative process. This gives me the opportunity to plan while also following my instincts.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

An array of crystals on a selenite slab. I collect them!

Anything new coming up from you?  What?

I will soon be releasing the 5th installment of The Blank Series, “You’re Dead to Me, Cupcake” on Wattpad. Interested readers can follow me there to enjoy this series and never miss a story release.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Yes, I do. What is your favorite genre to read?

A former human turned military spy bot escapes the oppressive Solar Government, leaving behind a secret that turns order into chaos. Now, she’s being hunted.

Blank: Madam Doesn't Like That (Short Story 4 of The Blank Series):

An unexpected visit from sex bots turns into a secret mission with deadly consequences

Arlo read a large sign passing by on the boulevard.

KILL ALL BOTS!

“What the hell is Razor doing?”

“She’ll be fine. She does it all the time.”

“Does what all the time? Never mind. Don’t tell me. We have to stop her.”

Zen crossed her legs, tapped the console with long, golden nails and stared past the protest.

“You stop her.”

He watched Razor lift a helmet off the ground and put it on, pumping her fist as she walked into the chanting crowd.

“I can’t be in a protest, Zen. I have a career to protect.”

“Sounds inconvenient.”

“Don’t we have somewhere to be?”

“And we’ll get there.”

“This is ridiculous,” he said, stepping out of the pod. He tried to spot her. Nothing but angry strangers. Walking towards the crowd, he felt the electric energy of frustration.

“PEOPLE OVER BOTS! PEOPLE OVER BOTS!”

He stood at the edge of the moving spectacle and scanned for Razor.

Against the grain of the crowd, he spotted the oversized biker’s helmet with flowing blonde locks extending beyond the edges. She grabbed a bat off the ground near a closed psychedelics store.

“Razor, no!” he yelled, his voice drowned by the raging chorus.

“What do you want me to do? Stall her?” Lucas crossed his ankles and folded his arms again. “What do you think?”

He stared at Lucas. He’d known Lucas Cole for ten years and worked beside him for six of them. He was a sweet man, sexy, too, and the kind of guy he wanted to settle down with—the man he trusted. He’d been attracted to him since the first day they met. The idea of mixing work and play bothered him, but if anyone could help him out, it was Lucas. Besides, it’d give him a reason to see Lucas without thetrappings of the job. He’d always liked Lucas and wanted to take things to the next step—trying to figure out if they could be together. Now, he had the chance and he refused to squander it.

“Well? She’s in the elevator.” Lucas unfolded himself and stood. “What do you want me to do?”

“Marry me.” If he had to be a reluctant groom, then he wanted his best friend and confidante beside him.

“What?”

“It’ll put them off if I’m already engaged.” Hudson removed his prized diamond ring his father had given to him years before. He offered the jewelry to Lucas. “Marry me.” He dropped to one knee.

“Lucas?” Not quite the way he’d wanted to propose, but he’d do it over later.

“Me? They think you’re going to marry a woman.”

“I’m gay, and I’m not changing who I am for money.” He held up the ring. “Lucas?” If there was anyone in the world he loved outside of his family, it was Lucas.

“You should marry someone more suitable.” Lucas shook his head. “You need me as your assistant.” A lock of his blond hair slipped over his brow. He tightened his jaw and pressed his lips together. He could’ve been a model instead of an assistant, and he’d be the best one out there because he embodied sexy boy-next-door. He might be younger than Hudson, but Hudson didn’t care. He’d fallen for Lucas a long time ago.

“Excuse me. Do you have soggy buns, too?”

Shaun froze, then looked at Cara, who’d gone pale. She hadn’t been the one to ask the question and the speaker didn’t sound like Warrick. Shaun turned his attention to the one who had spoken. Kevin. Shaun’s breath lodged in his throat. The man was even more handsome up close. Shaun noted the sprinkling of hairs on Kevin’s cheeks and the lines crinkling at the corners of his eyes. Were those flecks of silver at his temples, too?

Kevin cleared his throat. “I’m sorry. The other table is complaining about the buns being subpar. Are your dining choices up to your standards?”

“Uh…” Shaun had to sound intelligent, not silly, but he couldn’t manage to form a normal sentence.

“They’re great,” Cara said. “Thank you.”

“Are you sure? We’re here to provide a fine dining experience,” Kevin said. “At decent prices.”

“You sound like you’re a walking advertisement,” Shaun managed. He balled his hand on his thigh under the table and drew in a deep breath to center himself. He’d never had problems talking to guys before now. “I don’t think our buns are soggy.” He smiled and met Kevin’s gaze. “But I would like to ask you a question.” Christ. Confidence, don’t fail me now.

“Do you need more ketchup? Some of the bottles are low.” Kevin shook his head, then reached across the table to retrieve the bottle. “I let Buzz handle it and he only filled about half of them.”

“No.” Shaun touched Kevin’s forearm, stopping him. The move also sent tingles along Shaun’s nerve endings. His synapses stood at full alert. “I… Would you like to grab a beer sometime?”

“Oh.” Kevin froze and confusion clouded his eyes. “You want to go out with me?”

“I do.” Shaun mustered his confidence. “I know it’s a strange time to ask you that, but I wasn’t sure if I’d get to see you again. It’s just beers or coffee, but I’d like to go out sometime with you.” Christ. He’d managed to stumble over everything he’d just said.

“Uh, sure.” Kevin stood at his full height and clasped his hands together. “But you’re sure you’re happy with the food?”

“Very.” Shaun scrawled his number on a piece of paper. “Call me when you’re free. I’d like to buy you that beer or coffee.”

Kevin tipped his head and a slight smile curled on his lips. A crooked smile. “I will.”

When Kevin walked away, Shaun considered what he’d done. “I asked him out.”

Rules of engagement

At higher echelons of command, the rules of engagement were used as a rheostat. That rheostat could be dialed up or down to adjust the level of violence. The level of violence was often adjusted to achieve military and political goals. At the soldier level, the rules allowed one to “kill with a conscience, if necessary.” I mention this now as, over time, the rules of engagement and what constituted a legal engagement would change from time to time based on conditions.

Entrepreneur Smith MacLean is obsessed with Alessandra Soriano, a woman he met briefly who disappeared six months ago. After a shocking reunion at Club Kink, he insists she stay with him. He means to find out where she's been.

Alessandra walked away from her life after making a mistake that cost everything. Her self-imposed penance is living in poverty and doing questionable things with questionable people. Now she's in Smith's luxurious condo, under his hand, and obeying his rules.

He has thirty days to convince her to come back from limbo. She has thirty days to convince him she needs to be forgotten. Unless the flames of lust consume them first.

“Did you not sleep well?”

“I never do when I’m not in my own bed.” Petulance? Perhaps. Smith deserved her ire.

He snickered. “That crappy excuse for a mattress at your old home could hardly be called a bed, and you should’ve been more concerned with your safety since the room didn’t even have a lock.” His glare lessened a fraction. “Perhaps you can take a nap.”

“That was my problem yesterday—I slept too much during the afternoon. I just want to go back to your place.”

“Why don’t we have lunch first?” He steered her toward a bistro.

“If that would please you.” Her response was listless. She wasn’t hungry and wouldn’t eat, but if this would get him off her back, she could survive. In truth, she had no choice.

He slowed his pace and turned to look down at her. “Maybe we can stop by Indigo on our way home, and you can select several books.”

The joy was instantaneous. “Really? Oh, that would be wonderful. I haven’t had a new book in—” She halted, catching herself.

“Six months?” He completed the sentence.

She nodded.

“Well, eat a full lunch, and maybe we’ll add a couple more.”

Maybe a meal wouldn’t hurt. If that meant she got a book, maybe it’d be worth it.

About the Author: Even though Gabbi Black is a firm believer in happy endings, she makes her characters work for it in every romance she writes, no matter what the genre. From contemporary to BDSM, they are penned early in the morning in her home in beautiful British Columbia while her trusty ChinPoo dog and her cantankerous Himalayan cat keep her company. She also writes gay romances as Gabbi Grey.

“You’re an odd vampire. Most every other one I’ve known wants me for dinner. Either you don’t because you’re weird or you’re lulling me into liking you so I’ll give in. If you are, you don’t have to make me like you. I’ll give in. I know the rules because you bought me. Remember?”

“Why don’t you shower and maybe get some sleep? I won’t kill or drain you.” He wanted her to trust him, but he didn’t want compliancy. Not yet and not outside of the bedroom. He liked her fire and the spunk he’d seen at the club.

“I don’t have much of a choice,” she said. “May I have this?”

“The wine? Of course.” He poured himself a glass of merlot. “Let’s drink to your freedom and new home.”

She stared at him, and he couldn’t read her expression. Wary? Confused? He wasn’t sure.

Casey sipped his wine. “Feel free to use whatever’s in the bathroom. I have no secrets from you.” Not many.

Her eyes widened again, and her lips parted. “You scare me.” She drank the wine in one gulp, then coughed.

Good merlot should be sipped—not gulped. But he hadn’t gone two days without food. “Why do I scare you?”

She shrugged out of his coat. “Because I can’t tell what you’re thinking or what you want from me.”

“Oh?” His previous girl had said he’d telegraphed every move.

“I don’t know what you want and I can’t figure out if you’re telling me the truth.” She left the stool. “I’d like that shower, though, please?”

He kept getting her right to the edge of opening up when she shut down again. Soon, he’d know her secrets, and she’d know his. He led her to the set of rooms along the back of the house. “In here. I’ve got towels, soap and anything you need in the drawers.”

“Even a flat iron?”

She’d volleyed a challenge. Nice. He liked her spirit. “If you want.” He turned the water on in the open stall. “I’ll leave you to your shower.”

“You can watch. I haven’t showered in ages.” She removed her filthy dress. “I used to have guards so I wouldn’t run away. I don’t know what it’s like to have privacy.”

Lomax used guards? Interesting. Casey spied the lines on her back. Lashings? “Were you whipped?”

She shuddered and didn’t turn around “I was told I deserved it.”

He touched the silvery scars. He remembered when he’d seen her at the club, she’d gotten off on being flogged, but not to the point of bloodletting. What she’d been through was abuse. She flinched when he touched her again.

“I’m sorry.” He pressed a kiss to her shoulder. “I’ll never do anything like this to you ever.”

She tensed, but didn’t pull away. “Uh-huh.”

Soon, she’d give him her trust, and he’d prove not all vampires were evil. He wasn’t a nice man—more a son of a bitch—but not with her. She could be his salvation, and he refused to screw that up.

“I was happy for you,” her mother said. “I think most parents are, but time goes by so fast. One moment your kids are babies and the next, they’re graduating and off to college.”

Bianca winced. “Don’t remind me, please.”

“See what I mean?” her mother continued. “Alyssa is not too far behind.”

“And now there’s a boy.”

Her mother grinned. “I see. How’s that going?”

Bianca’s eyes widened slightly. “No ‘she’s too young to be dating’? Isn’t that what you said to me at her age?”

Her mother waved off her question. “I’m the grandmother, so I can spoil her. I was only strict with you and Melanie.”

“Traitor.”

Her mother winked at her.

“Well, I want to meet the boy before she goes out with him.”

Her mother bobbed her head. “Now you remind me of your father. That’s exactly what he said when you told us about your crush on Malcom. He wanted to hire a private investigator.”

Bianca’s mouth fell open. “He didn’t.”

“I stopped him,” her mother said. “After I told him I would keep an eye on you two.”

“I still can’t believe you followed us on our first date.” Bianca ran a finger over her eyebrow.

“It was either him or me.” Her mother paused as her fingers drifted to her now bare ring finger. “Sometimes I can still hear him laughing. Even in my dreams, I can see his face. Hear his voice. To think we almost made forty years.”

Bianca touched her mother’s hand. “I miss him.” There’d been terrible beyond health circumstances. If only his heart had been stronger, but it took him away from the family too soon.

Her mother patted her hand. “Me too.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom are heading out!” the DJ announced through his microphone.

Bianca grabbed her small purse and the small drawstring bag that was filled with birdseed. She smiled, knowing her friend didn’t want the birds to choke on rice. She followed along with her mother as they tossed the birdseed at the couple. The limo waited for them, but Chad kissed Nicole one more time before opening the door. The crowd cheered only louder.

Bianca managed one last glance at Jordan, but he slipped away from the crowd. She didn’t blame him for not staying, but since he was Nicole’s best friend, Bianca knew he would show his support. He’d do anything for Nicole.

Tossing more birdseed, family and friends cheered and whistled at the newlywed couple. Bianca’s chest swelled. Her friend’s bouquet was tucked underneath her arm. Would she get married again? Bianca would think about that later. Right now, she wanted to get out of her five-inch pumps. They’d served their purpose, but she was grateful that she had flats in her car.

Chad opened the door for his new wife, only to hear Nicole’s high-pitched scream. Bianca’s instincts kicked in and she scurried to her friend’s side. Nicole’s face paled. Looking inside the limousine, Bianca spotted someone sitting across from where they stood.

She didn’t hesitate to walk to the other side. Bianca gasped at the sight.

A Few Things You Might Not Know About the Authors

1) An interesting side note which readers might appreciate is that during my time with Father Lawlor, I was once punished for acting out and forced to write: "The ways of the transgressor are exceedingly difficult", one thousand times on a chalkboard.

The reason I acted out was because we were having a discussion about the devil. I told Father Lawlor that the devil didn't exist.

His response always stuck with me. He told me: "One day, I might meet someone so evil, that I'd know that the devil exists."

Was he right! Soon after, I met someone so evil it was impossible not to believe.

2) When I was older, a young lady at a bar asked me to dance which started a huge fight with the boyfriend she was trying to get away from. Who was the boyfriend? He was the enforcer for Satan’s choice motorcycle club. I submitted him while surrounded by twenty-five of his biker friends. I left under good terms but next day they came to the gym looking for me. Chief Pine along with some Ojibway friends and some lumber jacks that happened to be working out that day, and they decided to back me. We all exited the gym together to confront these guys standing beside their bikes. Needless to say, the bikers fled. At that point I developed a saying: If the devil cannot get you, he sends bikers."

3) Decades later, I found myself in a diner having lunch with a screenwriter. So I asked him, what would make a good story? He said a true story that's mind boggling frightening, like "Open Water". So I told him about just a few of my many experiences. He was floored. This was a writer whose credits included a horror film about a woman who gets impregnated by a demon. He admitted to me after we finished our lunch that he couldn't have thought up anything as scary as what I had lived through. It was a lunch that he's never forgotten.

Have you ever come face to face with the devil? In a tapestry of sports, business, and dating, there is an evil presence that is not quite visible to anyone: The Bedroom Strangler. A serial killer that scales fifteen storey buildings, enters through the balcony, and stealthily slithers under the bedroom bed, with the sole intent of raping and murdering innocent women in their sleep. He has been classified as the worst serial killer in Ontario history and Canada's most dangerous criminal ever, operating at the height of London's 40 year serial killer period, from 1974 - 1978.

The Bedroom Strangler is a member of a gym. It is the same gym the protagonist managed during the 1970's. Members of the gym trained and worked out together, never knowing their friend's true nature. In fact, Mike even introduced the killer to a female member friend at a gym party, a woman who lived in the same building as the murderer; a woman who would become his last victim. As a result of unprecedented tactics by police, Mike ends up becoming part of the investigation—but will he be able to stop this evil predator? It took 40 years to write this story and it's important to remember that this story is being told by someone who was there.

Origen: A True Story of Evil truly began when Mike's real-life persona, Peter J. Perry, was just 17 years old. At the time, he was just a student of St. Mary's College in Sault St. Marie who would carry out heated discussions with a priest, Father Lawlor, about the existence of the devil. Father Lawlor tells him that one day he might meet someone so evil, he will surely know the devil exists, and maybe he will do some good by it. And we will. Part of the proceeds of this novel are being contributed to good causes to respect both the victims and Father Lawlor.

The novel's title reflects a belief about the dynamic forms of energy as Origen believed that demons can take human form and humans can also be demonized. What follows is inspired by true events. All the names of characters have been changed and many of the events happened, although not all.

This painting of the gym scene, the dating scene, the underground fighting martial arts scene, the psychiatric scene, and Origen's beliefs may cause you to rethink the devil. If you dare to read the contents of this book, you can come to your own conclusion: Is there more to evil than what we think?

Based on an original screenplay by Peter Perry and Geoff Hart.

He locks the door to his office and heads for the sauna. He sees Claire finishing her exercise class and waves at her. She waves back. As Mike walks past the window, Claire tunes in to a breaking news report on a television that is mounted above on the wall. Everyone in the class stops to watch the report, too.

Claire reads the tagline on the newsfeed detailing some kind of murder investigation.

“The victim was strangled in her bedroom with friends just outside her door. There appears to be evidence of indignity to the body and may be the work of a serial killer. Police are considering a link to previous cases where the death has been made to look accidental or natural. This is the first case where…”

Claire stops to pay closer attention, but the news switches to some other story. Claire quickly moves over to the television and starts switching channels to find more on the story she just heard. There is nothing. What is going on? She wonders. The class resumes in chit-chat, loud whispers, and long-faces.

If we look at the plant world, specifically the sunflower, we see that this plant follows and faces the sun. From morning until night its face turns to align with the sun. In fact, on cloudy days this plant just turns and faces the plant behind it, as there is no sun to follow. On these cloudy days, these plants appear to turn and share energy with one another. It would seem that they have a consciousness within themselves. It seems reasonable that they are a part of the whole and that they have the universal consciousness just by virtue of being a part of the whole and the universal energy flows in their form and formlessness.

The brain is a big software, like a big computer, that is powered by chemicals. This is also how neurology sees the brain. The brain is not a requirement for consciousness. If a living thing can be aware of and experience its environment, then it has and is a part of consciousness — like we saw with the sunflower.

Like the sunflower, bacteria signal each other and communicate. Being aware of and interacting with their environment means they have a consciousness. It would follow that the human they are in would be their bigger consciousness, and the bacteria would not be aware of the human’s existence. The bacteria would only be aware of and interacting with the internal environment.

A specific bacterium named slime mould is unicellular and is titled Physarum Polyceiphalum. Though it is brainless, it exhibits a sort of spatial memory. As evidence of this, it avoids previously explored areas where it was not possible for it to multiply.

Bacteria have shown themselves to be an organized organism that evolves and changes and interacts with its environment; therefore, it follows that it has a consciousness. Humans and organisms evolve and have mutations or changes, and this brings about new possibilities. The universal consciousness has both involution and evolution occurring.

It has been suggested that the universe is expanding. Scientists have thought that it would expand to a point and then implode on itself. The newest theory is that the universe is expanding and will continue to expand, with no implosion expected. What if the universe is a part of yet a bigger system?

The universe consists of light energy and what science calls dark energy. We don’t yet know what dark energy is or what it does, but we do know that approximately ninety per cent of the universe is made of this denser, dark energy. The light energy that we and planets are made of consists of about ten per cent of the universe. It is reasonable to say that we only know some things about the universe or energy that creates it all.

Following a workplace head injury and depression, I went through a long climb back to health. I learned of an ever-present, inner psychological health that I have always had and just needed to understand once again. The result of this knowledge has led me to a life of peace, contentment, and love. I hope this book will lead you to a similar place.
