Prison of Hope by Steve McHugh - Interview and Giveaway

4_13 PRISON VBT_TourBanner_PrisonOfHope

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Steve McHugh will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write The Hellequin Chronicles, which is Urban Fantasy. I’ve always loved Fantasy in all of it’s disguises, be it Urban, Epic or otherwise. I’ve also always loved mythology and magic, and knew I wanted to write something that was set in the modern day with those extra things.

What world-building is required?

The initial world building was a substantial undertaking. In the Hellequin Chronicles world, there are other realms, and each one is a mini world with it’s own weathers, landscape, animals and plants. On top of that there are mythological beings to research as one of the biggest parts of the world is that the beings of mythology are real, so while they’re not always portrayed as they might be in the stories everyone knows, I still need to know what parts to change to give them a twist on the norm. Hades, for example, is very different in the Hellequin world than he is in the ancient Greek myths.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

Most of the things that Nate, the main character, knows are pretty scary. He’s had a very dark life, and has done a lot of questionable things. But I do now know how to steal one type of BMW, and for future reference, calling up the fire brigade and asking them how to start a fire that looks like an accident results in a lot of very odd questions from a concerned fire investigator.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

You know, I don’t think I do. I should get one so I can say yes. Maybe I should wear a monocle while I write, or buy a parrot or something.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

A bit of both, really. I tend to plot out the main story, character arcs and know what big things need to happen, but everything else happens as it happens. If I did too much plotting, I’d only ignore it, and if I did none, my 130,000 word books would be double that.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

A very large bookcase, it’s full of graphic novels, a Lego Mars Rover and a Lord of the Rings Lego ship. I like Lego. Next to that is my office door, which really isn’t that exciting one way or the other.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

My 4th, Prison of Hope, was out on April 14th, and then my 5th is out in Aug. So, it’s going to be a very busy year. Both are in the Hellequin Chronicles series and were a lot of fun to write.

Do you have a question for our readers?

If you could sit and have dinner with any 3 people from history, who would it be and why? Mine would be Stephen Hawking, Leonardo da Vinci and Nikola Tesla. I wouldn’t have a clue what they might be talking about half the time, but I would be there when after that lunch they went off and changed the world.

Long ago, Olympian gods imprisoned the demon Pandora in a human—Hope—creating a creature whose only purpose was chaos and death. Remorseful, the gods locked Pandora away in Tartarus, ruled by Hades.

Now, centuries later, Pandora escapes. Nate Garrett, a 1,600-year-old sorcerer, is sent to recapture her and discovers her plan to disrupt the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, killing thousands in a misplaced quest for vengeance.

Fast forward to modern-day Berlin, where Nate has agreed to act as guardian on a school trip to Germany to visit Hades at the entrance to Tartarus. When Titan King Cronus becomes the second ever to escape Tartarus, Nate is forced to track him down and bring him back, to avert a civil war between those who would use his escape to gain power.

“See?” the manager told Mara. “He wishes you no harm.”

“We’ll see how that goes when he’s murdering us in our sleep,” she said.

“I promise to clean up after I’m done,” I said.

The manager gave me a “Was that really necessary?” look while someone behind me made no effort to conceal his or her snigger. Apparently my time of helping was over.

The Light at the End of Judgment and Day by Marcia Colette - Review and giveaway

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $15 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post during the tour.

Violinist and angel, Yvette Mills has spent almost 200 years living among humans while rounding up ghosts to send into Judgment. Back on the mend from her last confrontation with a malevolent entity, she's ready to reenter the classical-music scene. One problem. She’s not facing one ghost. She's facing hundreds with a few demonic entities sprinkled in.

Dozens of tenants have left the Folsom Building in downtown Charlotte because of the strange goings on. When Yvette's agent goes for the bargain-basement rental prices and now has an office there, her mission is clear. Rid the building of the paranormal vermin to keep him and the few tenants left, safe. It won't be easy when a psychic, who's leading a team of paranormal investigators, discovers she can see ghosts, too. If they discover she’s truly an angel sent from the heavens, she’ll be the first to find herself thrown into the pits of hell.

My review:

A fascinating twist on ghost-busting!

I wasn't sure what to expect, exactly, going into this book. Watching Yvette juggle the "normal" life of being a concert violinist (at least in this life/body ... she's been several people over the past couple hundred years) and being an angel tasked with ridding this world of ghosts was both fun and fascinating. The author does a great job throwing us right into the action and helping us get to know Yvette and the other characters involved in this book.

The plot was pretty solid (it had a few hiccups and a couple of things that made me wonder if people were actually paying attention to things) and the characters were well-rounded and folks I totally enjoyed reading about.  The author has a way with words that really makes the story flow along and I never got jolted out of the story due to odd phrasing or editing errors--a big deal for me as I'm a bit of a grammar nerd.

The combination of believable characters, solid writing, humor and intense situations made for an intriguing read and it's long enough to be a full story, but short enough to read in one sitting.  I have a feeling (maybe it's just hope) that this is the start of a series.  If so, I'll be in line to grab book two when it's available.

4 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

The elevator wobbled. I touched the wall to make sure there was something to hold onto in case the next wobble meant something else. I watched as the green numbers incremented by one on the wall above my head.

Another wobble.

What kind of rickety elevator was this? Surely, this wasn’t the top-of-the-line building on South Tryon Road, but the least I expected was to get to the nineteenth floor in one piece.

The lights blacked out and the elevator slowed to a stop. I stood on a dark, metal box with nervousness creeping across my shoulders. All sorts of horrible images about what could happen next assaulted my thoughts.

I should've been used to situations like this.

After a deep breath, I steadied my nerves. Death by elevator would be a new one, given the number of other ways I had died over the years. The only good thing about it would be I’d never feel the moment of impact. God was good.

Calmness blanketed me. I reached inside my purse and pulled out my cell phone. I pressed the button on the side to light up the screen.

A screaming, ethereal face appeared and disappeared with the speed of a flasher standing on a street corner and exposing himself to a pedestrian. That was why the elevator really stopped. Sighing, I slipped my phone in my purse and crossed my arms.

About the author: Bestselling author Marcia Colette didn’t discover her love for reading until her late teens when she started reading John Saul and progressed to works by Bentley Little, Stephen King and Laurell K. Hamilton. Her reading tastes convinced her to write paranormals where curses cause people to shift into spiders, psychotic and telekinetic mothers are locked away in attics, and murderous doppelgangers are on a rampage. Let's not forget about the hunky werecheetah coalitions who live throughout North Carolina. As long as she can make it believable, that's all that matters.

Born and raised in upstate New York, Marcia now lives in North Carolina with her mom and beautiful daughter. They’re not raising zombies in the backyard. There aren’t any hellhounds living in the den, only a rabbit and a cockatiel. So where she gets her ideas is as much a mystery to her as anyone else.

The best place to find her--when she's not stirring up trouble--is on her blog where she loves connecting with readers.

Visions of Fire and Ice by Teresa D'Amario --Book Review and Giveaway

(Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance)

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Teresa will be awarding a $10 Freya's Bower GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Trapped on a planet not their own, the Petiri spend their lives hiding the natural gifts that set them apart from the world. They live long and unfulfilled lives, unable to find their soul mates on this backward planet known as Earth. That is until the night Ramose comes face to face with Tamara, a woman whose gifts rival his own. Determined to find why this human is in possession of an ancient magical Petiri relic, he arranges a meeting.

But Tamara, embittered from past events, is wary despite lifelong dreams of Ramose and a sure knowledge he is her soul mate. Before long the couple find themselves ensnared in a battle that has raged for millennia in Egypt’s desert. Set, Egyptian God of Chaos, is determined to take his just due: the throne of Osiris.

The only way to stop him is for Ramose to put his trust in Tamara, but first must gain the same from her. The ensuing sensual relationship is filled with romance, lust and love. Their relationship is tested by an unnatural evil. Will her powers over fire, combined with his ice be enough to win the day? Or will the ancient gods and goddesses of Egypt destroy more than just their love?
My Review:  It seems like Egyptian mythology is becoming very popular of late, and since I've always been fascinated by it, I had to grab this to read.  I wasn't disappointed.

Our heroine, Tamara, is a woman of power -- fire and heat to be exact.  I have to admit I enjoyed how she handled a man getting just a little too friendly with her.  Apparently power runs in the family, as her cousin can see the future and she "sees" Ramose before Tamara meets him.

Ramose is part of the race, the Petiri, who crashed on Earth a very long time ago.  He's a protector, and that shows in everything he does.  He's very nearly perfect, handsome, smart, caring and he's ice to Tamara's fire.  It's awesome.

There is evil to battle in the form of Ramose's brother, as well as the perplexing fact that Tamara is Ramose's soul mate (and how can that be, since she's not of the Petiri?).

Action, adventure and sexual tension abound this book, though occasionally the plot slowed to show things like Tamara and Ramose shopping.  While I understand what was accomplished with that scene (and others that slowed the galloping pace a bit), it still gave me a place where I was able to put the book down for a bit instead of keeping me glued to the pages. Don't get me wrong, I returned, and happily since I wanted to know how things turned out!

Visions of Fire and Ice is an interesting take on the Egyptian gods and mythology and I quite enjoyed the read.

4 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

 Enjoy an excerpt:

Ramose ducked and twisted his body, avoiding the flailing fist surging forward to contact with his jaw. With one quick upper cut, he cracked his opponent beneath his chin. The man’s head jerked back, blood spurting from a bitten lip.

“Had enough yet?” asked Ramose.

Darius spat, his bloody spittle spattering the blue floor mat. “I had enough a long time ago. But, then again, you need to have your ass kicked lately.”

Ramose grinned. “Let’s see you try,” he said, snatching a pair of swords from the rack on the wall and tossing one to Darius. He was the Master of Defense for his people. He was responsible for teaching them the in’s and out’s of self-defense. It was what kept them alert and safe.

At least, he liked to think it was what kept them safe. It was probably more luck than anything. Unlike their arrival on this planet more than three thousand five hundred years ago.

“I still don’t understand why you find it so necessary to teach me combat,” repeated Darius for what had to be the fifth time since they’d begun. Ramose sliced forward with his blade, and the man danced away. The sharp edge whizzed past Darius’s ear, slicing a few hairs from the side of his head. The man didn’t blink, but readied his sword for the next attack. “I’ve lasted this long without it, why now?”

Impressed with his pupil’s quick defensive moves, Ramose charged, sending the man off balance. He needed this as much as Darius did. Inside, his nerves sang with an intensity he couldn’t begin to understand.

Darius dodged his advance with a neat parry.

“I’ve told you, things are changing.” Gods, how he wished he could give a good answer. So much remained hidden. Premonitions had haunted Ramose’s thoughts for most of his life. Tiny inklings of a future to come. Images or feelings which were never clear, details blurred beneath the mists of the unknown. Right now, he had the odd sensation of danger. And the focus was Darius.

“You’ve been dreaming about her again, haven’t you?”

Ramose frowned, and parried, the slide of blade against blade vibrated through his muscles. “My dreams are unimportant and have no bearing on your future.”

Darius spun and Ramose blocked. “So, what’s it like, seeing your Kha-Ib?”

Like the rest of those on board the doomed Petiri vessel, Ramose had left any possibility of finding his Kha-Ib on Petiri, waiting for his return. He’d never met her, but he’d dreamed of her since childhood. The woman in his recent dreams couldn’t be older than her mid-twenties. In most of the dreams, she was no more than a child in her teens. Too young and too human to be the heart of his soul.

“She’s not my Kha-Ib,” Ramose grumbled, slicing toward Darius.

“Whoever this woman is, she haunts your sleep the way a ghost haunts an old graveyard. Elo is trying to tell you something.”

“Our god deserted us the moment we arrived on this backward planet. He’s telling me nothing.” Their blades clanged together, and they both leapt back.

“You’re deluding yourself, Ramose. And, until you admit it, you will never find peace. Whoever this woman is, she’s not your wife.”

Ramose rewarded the verbal jab with a physical one of his own, spinning about and slamming a fist into the man’s solar plexus. The sudden flinch in Darius’ face was a little too satisfying for comfort.

He’d never loved his wife, not the way a Petiri would love his Kha-Ib. True, every Petiri dreamed of his Kha-Ib, just like he had. Years ago. But those dreams had stopped the moment he’d given up on ever finding the one meant for him.

Loneliness had wrapped its velvet fist around him, driving him to long for what he would never have. He’d decided to accept second best. Everything had gone horribly wrong. No matter how hard he tried, he still couldn’t forget the anger brought on by his wife’s death. A death she’d intended for him. Anger at the memories coiled in his gut.

Ramose balanced on the balls of his feet before striking forward again. Their blades crashed together, their song of battle echoing through the room, sparks flying.

“Enough talk,” Ramose growled.

Darius shoved hard at Ramose’s shoulders, knocking him backward. “I’m done. I refuse to fight when you’re angry. You’ll kill me.”

Ire burned in Ramose’s gut, and his knuckles turned white on the pummel of his sword. Darius was right. The dreams were getting to him. Dreams of a young girl in peril, with a face he could never see. A human face.

About the Author:
Born in Atlanta, the daughter of an Army Soldier during the early stages of the Viet Nam war, I spent my childhood traveling from state to state, finally ending up overseas in Germany where I graduated high school six months early.

My writing career however began as a young Airman in the Air Force, writing monthly articles for the weekly base paper. The articles ranged from climatological data to full center fold articles on the destructive forces of hurricanes. As I increased in rank, my writing changed to more technological instruction, including such works as WSR-88D Doppler Radar Data Interpretation Guide for North Carolina Stations, and Station Operating Procedures.

But my early writing wasn’t limited only to the technological side. I’ve written multiple dog training and behavior articles for canine websites such as Sonora Canine Freestyle, and also the Ask Blackjack column, a fun training column in the voice of my labrador retriever, then a young pup.

My first book, SheWolf, won 2nd place for Best First book in RWA’s PFF&P Prism awards.

I’m married to a wonderful man named Doug, who is also retired Air Force. We live in North Carolina with our two dogs.

Elven Blood by Debra Dunbar - Virtual Book tour and giveaway

Today author Debra Dunbar visits on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for the Urban Fantasy, "Elven Blood".

Debra will be awarding an e-book copy of A DEMON BOUND (book 1 in the Imp Series) to a randomly drawn commenter at every stop, and a grand prize of a Kindle Fire with an ELVEN BLOOD book cover skin to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour (US ONLY), so leave a comment at the end of this post to be entered!

Thanks to Debra for answering all my prying questions!

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I’ve always loved fantasy. To young children, everything is magic and it’s just as possible for a dog to sprout wings and fly as it is for a bird to do so. I don’t think I ever lost that ability to see the world as a place of possibilities. The odd thing is I’m also a stodgy, practical person. I’ve got an MBA and work for a corporation designing sales compensation plans- which involves a lot of spreadsheets and statistics. You wouldn’t think that kind of person could also write stories about demons and angels, about elves and changelings, but I do. I like to think of it as a Clark Kent/Superman kind of thing. Mild mannered compensation consultant by day, cape-wearing super author by night!

What world-building is required?

Since I’m writing urban/contemporary fantasy, I try to root a lot of my world-building in mythology, folklore, or old religious texts. I think it’s easier for the reader to buy in to a fantasy world if some things are familiar.

For the parts that sprang completely from my imagination, a lot of brain work had to go into the series before I ever began the first chapter. The first draft of novel 1 (A Demon Bound) brought up even more questions, and I found myself with a few re-writes to make sure I had all the details down on the various supernatural races, their interactions and history, and the geography. I actually have a map drawn of Hel, so I know where the elven kingdoms are, topographical features, and locations of the angelic gates to our world.

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

That we all have an imp somewhere inside of us, and it’s okay if we let her come out and play every now and then. I’m not likely to make a whole bar full of people crave hot wings, or vandalize an entire block of parking meters, but I still can take naughty pictures of our Elf On A Shelf and post them to Pinterest.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

There is one weird superstition I have about picking up coins. If I see any kind of money on the ground, no matter how gross it is, I need to pick it up. I don’t have to keep it – I can stick it in a donation jar, give it to one of my kids, put it in a piggy bank, etc, but I do have to pick it up. If I don’t, I believe I’m sending the universe the signal that I don’t need money, and I’ll wind up with financial misfortune.

I actually wrote a horror short story based on this – A Slave To The Coin. It’s free on Smashwords, and on Amazon for 99 cents.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’m trying to be a reformed pantser. I’ve always done a sketchy outline, but for my current work-in-progress I have a chapter-by-chapter outline with more detail. I think that’s about as plotter as I can get, though.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

My four year old son, with a panda Pillow Pet. He loves to sit beside me while I work, and sometimes he’ll pull one of my books off the shelf and “read”. He tells me they are quite good.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Now that Elven Blood is out the door, I’m working on book 4 in the Imp series. I’ve also got 2 more short stories in my Naughty Mom romantic erotica series coming soon, and a paranormal thriller, Dead Shift, due out this fall. There are story ideas for a few more things, but I’m not sure my schedule will allow them this year.

Do you have a question for our readers?

If you let your inner Imp out to play, what would she (or he) do? Assuming you didn’t need to fear incarceration, that is!

Sam may be the Iblis, but she is also an imp with a price on her head. The powerful demon Haagenti won’t rest until she’s dragged back to Hel for “punishment”. Sam knows she can’t face Haagenti and win, so when an Elf Lord offers to eliminate the demon in return for her help, Sam accepts. It’s a simple job – find and retrieve a half-breed monster dead or alive. But finding this demon/elf hybrid isn’t proving easy and time is running out.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

The hiss of Wyatt’s shower penetrated through the fog of my pre-caffeinated brain. I was still sprawled on the bed, hidden under a heap of covers, wondering whether I could sneak in a few more minutes of sleep. It was rent day, and I was already late in making my collection rounds. Stretching, I poked my head from under the blanket and watched a small lizard cross the floor. It had a scorpion tail, pointed ears and crimson eyes that darted intelligently across the room. Those red eyes locked onto the bed just as I realized this wasn’t a lizard. It was a demon—and not the usual Low one either.

There was a flash, and I rolled across the bed and onto the floor just before the mattress sliced into two smoking sections. Unfortunately I was trapped in a tangle of sheets. Instinctively I converted my form, deconstructing my usual human one into basic atoms and re-assembling into a creature that was small and hard to kill.

I heard a muffled curse, and I felt the sheets snatched from above me. The demon was no longer a lizard; he was bipedal with furry, clawed legs and a scaled torso. Arms hung down past his knees, ending in sharp hooks. His head twisted and turned, forked tongue tasting the air as he searched for me.

Angel of Syn by Mertianna Georgia - Review tour and giveaway

(Full length, Paranormal/Urban Fantasy)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual tour with Goddess Fish Promotions.

Mertianna will be awarding a canvas tote bag printed with the book cover on one side and a saying on the other("Are you a syn-er?"), and filled with goodies plus a $20 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour (US ONLY), so comment today AND follow the tour (if you click on the tour banner above, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win an awesome prize!

Contemporary witch Cara Augustine goes international and inter-dimensional, from San Francisco to France to an alternate Eden-like dimension, in this second book of the Synemancer series.

Cara is a fugitive, pursued by the Portalkind police for breaking a major covenant. When she accidently made a werewolf her witch’s familiar, it amounted to enslaving a human. And the punishment is death. On the run for her life, she and her companions stumble into a strange paradise dimension. But they quickly find the dangerous world is filled with strange creatures, deadly and beautiful. And, because she’s quickly learning a Synemancer’s life is never simple. Cara has to deal with an amorous Nephilim (half-angel half-witch), a dangerously deranged French werewolf, and the darkly handsome Nightkind she just might love. Each powerful supernatural man has his own reasons for wanting to possess Cara, body and soul. But if the Portalkind police catch her, she’ll be in a fight for her life.

This book had non-stop action and a fascinating premise.  When I chose to review it, I didn't realize it was part of a series.  I haven't read the book prior, and admit I felt a little lost at first (there are lots of character dynamics I didn't understand at first ... Cara has interesting relationships with many, many male characters), but the author does a good job of filling us in, so after a couple of chapters I was right into the swing of things.

Cara frustrated me a bit at first.  I thought she was taking some unnecessary risks,  but it really came down to her trying to do the right thing, regardless of the possibility of danger to herself.

I also struggled a bit with all the many love interests that surrounded her.  Tom, her were-familiar; Azrael, part Nephilim and all hottie in love, and Roman who is probably the one she's supposed to be with.  With all that testosterone, she's practically in a state of constant arousal.

This is not a simple book.  It's packed with details, action and twists.  I had to fight against the need to speed read in order to find out what happened next so that I didn't miss anything important.

One warning:  there's a pretty graphic scene in the book that may disturb more sensitive readers.

Ms. George did a great job guiding this first time reader through the  twists and turns of her universe (and through another dimension as well).  Despite being a bit lost at first, and struggling to understand Cara's sexual responses to so many men, I enjoyed this book.  I'll be interested in seeing what she comes up with next!

4 flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

Bart straightened from his defensive semi-crouch, still eyeing the Hounds warily. I glanced around the room to see if the orbs were here, but they were nowhere in sight. The mirror chimed and shimmered for the umpteenth time since I’d come into the room. A tall, pale man dressed in black and wearing a black backpack walked into the room. Azrael stood silently on Amelia’s hardwood floor, and by the expression on his beautiful face, he was angry enough to chew spells and spit out hexes. He quickly scanned the room. His ice-blue eyes focused on me and I had his full attention. All Hades was about to break loose. With two weres, two Hellhounds, and a Nightkind in the room, the situation was about to get bloody.

Mertianna currently lives with her husband, son, and three dogs in Northern California. At a young age, while traveling the globe with her military family, she discovered the joys of reading. Armed with a fascination for science fiction, the paranormal, and fantasy, she amused, shocked, and impressed her teachers with her imaginative stories.

As an adult, reality reared its boring head, and she joined the business workforce. After many years working as a professional manager while secretly wishing she was a writer, she took a detour from the corporate world to immerse herself in the fictional worlds of her own making.

Mertianna has accumulated multiple graduate degrees in business and survived years of doctoral studies in psychology, all of which undoubtedly has influenced how her characters behave or don’t behave as the case may be.

Virtual Book Spotlight: City of the Gods: The Descendant by S. J. McMillan

Welcome to author S. J. McMillan, here on tour with Sizzling PR with her urban fantasy, "City of the Gods: The Descendant".

700 A.D. Teotihuacan, Mexico – The High Priest believed himself to be as powerful as the Gods and set a plague on the city as a demonstration of his power. The Gods took pity on the few remaining survivors and granted each immortality and an extraordinary ability. Three of these survivors were given a mission of great importance: train the lone human descendant of their civilization to stop the evil priest from damning the rest of humanity.

2012 A.D. San Diego, California – The time has come to make Katalina Deckard aware of her destiny. Her life has been a constant struggle since the loss of her parents when she was young, but has it prepared her to save the world? Can her friends, who have survived so long ,convince her she has what it takes to accept the mantle of Redeemer?

I am an author signed on with Ruby Lioness Press. I am beyond excited that my urban fantasy novel, City of the Gods: The Descendant, has finally found a home.

I play many roles in life, as we all do. I am a wife to a supportive husband, a mother to three young rascals, and an administrative assistant during the week just to name a few. Now I will finally get to add published author to my list.

I started writing poetry in high school. I enjoy poetry and still write a poem whenever inspiration hits me. I love to read, especially paranormal romances and urban fantasies. The love of reading spawned the urge to try writing a novel of my own.

One of my favorite parts of writing a book is creating the characters. I immerse myself into their lives. I laugh when they laugh and cry when they cry. I cheer them on in their triumphs and encourage them in their struggles.

I have also come to enjoy writing fight scenes. Don’t laugh, but my husband (the wonderful man that he is) will act them out with me so I know exactly how I need to show it to the audience. Call us crazy if you want but it is really fun to act out a scene using a broom handle as a spear and a foam baseball bat as an axe.

I hope you enjoy City of the Gods: The Descendant. I am working on the follow up book now. I love to hear from other authors and readers.

Virtual Tour and Giveaway: Emerald City Dreamer by Luna Lindsey

We're welcoming author Luna Lindsey on her tour with Bewitching Book Tours today. She's here to talk about her Urban Fantasy novel, Emerald City Dreamer and has been generous enough to offer a PDF copy of the book as a giveaway to one person who comments!  The drawing is open through next Thursday, 6/28/12, so leave a comment to be entered.

Jina and Sandy survived the unthinkable. Now they've set up a secret Order in Seattle to fight the impossible - fairytale creatures born of human nightmares and nourished on dreams. Their tools: iron, lore, science, glamour, and support groups. As beginners, without access to the ancient societies of faerie hunters, they must rediscover how to protect themselves. And in order to fight the fiends of the world, Sandy must take control her inner ghosts.

As a dreamer in a rock band, Jina unknowingly feeds the fae and attracts unseen enemies at every turn. Now, they're finally on the tail of at least one dark monster bent on evil. She is a dreamer, so she must follow her heart - but which way does it lead?

Jett is an elf who only wants to protect her hodge-podge clan of faeries from the encroaching world of science and religion - which have systematically slaughtered her kind and the beliefs that gave birth to her people. True dreamers are rare beings, and when she finds them, she does everything she can to protect them and claim them as her own.

Ezra is a teenager who never feels comfortable in his own skin. Most people like him well enough, but when he looks in the mirror, he sees a demon. He has been taken in by the Garbage Eaters, who expect obedience and purity. Before long, he suffers a crisis of faith that may lead him into real danger.

Delve into this deeply developed, internally consistent world of the fae, and meet beings who are simultaneously alien, elegant, and terrifying, fueled by dreams and the creative energy of artists. Glimpse the secret world of Tir Nan Og through the eyes of fully fledged four-dimensional characters living in a Seattle that is just a bit weirder than you think.

This is a story with psychological depth, a page-turner with unexpected twists and turns.

When prey hunts, who will lead the chase, and who will run?

Virtual Book Tour and Giveaway: Seized by Lynne Cantwell

Today we're welcoming author Lynne Cantwell to the blog on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for her urban fantasy story, "Seized" available now -- and with one of the most eye-catching covers I've seen.

Lynne is awarding a $10 Amazon GC to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour. So comment today AND follow her tour (if you click on the banner over there on the left, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win a GC!

Lynne is sharing five things we'd probably never guess about her -- read and enjoy!

5 Things about Lynne Cantwell

• I have been in forty-nine of the fifty US states. When I was a kid, my parents and I would take a driving vacation every summer. I nailed forty-five states with them, missing only North Dakota, Minnesota, Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska. Since then, I’ve whittled the list down, and now Alaska is the only one left. Maybe next year….

• When I was just a teeny writer, maybe ten or eleven years old, I got into paper dolls, to the point where I was making my own. I would draw and color them on cardboard and cut them out, and then make clothes for them by tracing around each doll on typing paper. I had probably ten or twelve dolls, all told. Of course, they were all friends (some were siblings), and they had their own rock band called The Leading Lamplight. And then I wrote several stories about them, one of which I turned in as a class assignment in fifth grade. I put a note on the story that the characters actually existed as paper dolls that I had created. My teacher, bless her heart, didn’t quite seem to know what to do with that information.

• I went off to college intending to major in music – specifically, clarinet – but I was so intimidated by the TA who was my instructor for private lessons that I never even auditioned for admission to the school. I went home for holiday break after my first semester with no clue what to do next. Then I overheard my mother tell a neighbor on the phone that maybe now I would go into journalism. So thanks, Mom, for inadvertently pointing me in the direction of my first career.

• Former presidential candidate Howard Dean once called me from a humvee in the middle of an ice storm. No, really! I was working for Mutual/NBC Radio News at the time. There had been a pretty severe ice storm in Vermont overnight, and I was delegated the task of calling the state’s office of emergency management to try to get some comments. The woman who answered the phone took my number and said she would have someone call me back. A little while later, then-Governor Dean called me while he was touring the affected area. This was in the days of brick-sized cell phones, so having someone call you from a car was quite the novelty. He proceeded to give me an enthusiastic description of trees bent to breaking under the weight of the ice, power poles snapped, and so on. I always thought afterward that if politics didn’t work out for him, he had a promising future in sports announcing.

• Another time at the same job, I got to interview Larry King. He used to do his radio show from our studios, so we had his direct number in our rolodex. Frank Sinatra had been hospitalized – this was toward the end of his life – and our producer on duty said, “Larry is friends with Frank’s daughter Nancy. Call him and see what he knows.” So I did, and he was very gracious about it. But I’ll tell you, it was a little disconcerting to be interviewing one of the best interviewers in the business.

The winter solstice 2012 won't be the end of the world. It will be the beginning of the end....

Naomi has a pretty sweet life. Respected as a skilled mediator, she has an almost uncanny knack for getting people on both sides of a dispute to agree. And her handsome boyfriend Brock has just proposed to her. But a white buffalo calf is bowing to her in her dreams. And who is the Native American man who has been following her around?

Naomi doesn’t know it, but things are about to change....

Lynne Cantwell has been writing fiction since the second grade, when the kid who sat in front of her showed her a book he had written, and she thought, "I could do that." The result was Susie and the Talking Doll, a picture book illustrated by the author about a girl who owned a doll that not only could talk, but could carry on conversations. The book had dialogue but no paragraph breaks. Today, after a twenty-year career in broadcast journalism and a master's degree in fiction writing from Johns Hopkins University (or perhaps despite the master's degree), Lynne is still writing fantasy. Her third novel and her first urban fantasy, Seized: Book One of the Pipe Woman Chronicles, was released in March.

Virtual Book Tour and Giveaway: Shadow's Edge by Jami Gray

Today we're welcoming author Jami Gray to the blog on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for Shadow's Edge: Book 1 of the Kyn Kronicles, an urban fantasy novel available now from Black Opal Books.

The author is giving away a $10 Amazon GC to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour. So comment today AND follow her tour (if you click on the banner over there on the left, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win a GC!

It takes a monster to hunt one, and for Raine McCord, forged in the maelstrom of magic and science, she’s the one for the job. In a world where the supernatural live in a shadowy existence with the mundane, a series of disappearances and deaths threatens the secrecy of her kind and indicates someone knows the monsters are alive and kicking. Partnering up with the sexy and tantalizing Gavin Durand proves to be a challenge as dangerous as the prey she hunts.

When the trail points back to the foundation which warped Raine’s magic as a child, her torturous past raises its ugly head. Gavin and Raine sift through a maze of lies, murder and betrayal to discover not only each other, but the emerging threat to them and the entire magical community.
Excerpt:

“You’re going to have to move fast if you want to save your boyfriend, Raine.” It took a second for the words to penetrate through the static.

“Who are you?”

“Let’s just say you and I are kin of sorts.” The voice was a vibrating growl.

“Strange, I don’t remember attending a family reunion recently.” Her heart rate kicked up and static whispered across the line even as she struggled to stay calm.

The static cleared. “Perhaps because you have no family left.”

Her blood froze at the words. “What do you want?” Her own voice came out cold, merciless.

“Ah, ah ah,” the voice chided. “No need to get so upset, cher. I just wanted to let you know if you want lover boy to make it out sane, you best starting moving on Dr. Lawson’s little lab.”

“What lab?” she bit out.

There was a huge elaborate sigh. “I’m so disappointed at how slow y’all move. Hasn’t your boss found lover boy’s car yet?” The gruff voice didn’t wait for answer. “Check the glove compartment. I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.”

Her mind raced furiously. “How do I know this isn’t just another little trap?”

The growl rumbled. “You don’t, but since you and I know exactly what’s happening to lover boy, I have a feeling it won’t matter. That Chet character, he was getting way too close, but this one they’re keeping alive for now. He shows promise.” A guttural scream cut through the airwaves, and she felt her breath stop.

Growing up on the Arizona-Mexico border, Jami Gray was adopted at the age of 14 and suddenly became the fifth eldest of 37 children. She graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and three minors-History, English, and Theater. Shortly after marrying her techie-geek hubby (who moonlighted as her best friend in high school) she completed a Masters in Organizational Management from University of Phoenix Oregon.

Now, years later, she’s back in the Southwest where she’s outnumbered in her own home by two Star Wars obsessed boys, one Star Wars obsessed husband, and an overly-friendly, 105-pound male lab. Writing is what saves her sanity.

Virtual Tour and Giveaway: Fire Baptized by Kenya Wright

Today we're welcoming author Kenya Wright to the blog on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for her urban fantasy novel, "Fire Baptized".

Kenya is giving away a $10 Amazon GC to one randomly drawn commenter. So comment today AND follow her tour (if you click on the banner over there on the left, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win a GC!

I grilled Kenya with some "must know" questions, and she has graciously responded. Take it away, Kenya!

First off, what's Fire Baptized about?

Since the 1970’s humans have forced supernaturals to live in caged cities. Silver brands embedded in their foreheads identify them by species: a full moon for Vampires, a crescent moon for Shifters, a pair of wings for Fairies, and the list goes on, for each supernatural species has been tagged and categorized by humans.

Lanore Vesta is marked with a silver X, the brand of Mixbreeds, second-class citizens shunned by society. She stays to herself, revealing her ability to create fire only during emergencies. All she wants to do is graduate college and stop having to steal to survive. But when she stumbles upon a murder in progress, she catches the attention of a supernatural killer. Now all she wants is to stop finding dead bodies in her apartment.

Enlisting help from her Were-cheetah ex-boyfriend Meshach and a new mysterious friend named Zulu, she is steered through the habitat’s raunchy nightlife. But their presence sometimes proves to be more burden than help, as they fight for her attention.

While the corpses pile up, and the scent of blood fills the air, Lanore is left wondering: will she find the psycho or die trying?

Why urban fantasy?

I really enjoy reading the urban fantasy genre. Sixty percent of my books are urban fantasy so when it was time to write a book I knew I would write in that genre.

What's a normal day like for you?

I usually wake up at five in the morning and write as much as I can. Then I help my husband get the kids ready for school. Later, I head to work and sneak a couple more chapters in during my commute. After work I go to law school in the evening, and then I head home and put the kiddies to bed. If I’m not exhausted I may write some more.

I pretty much exist on coffee and the hope that one day all of this work will help me attain my dream of being a full-time writer.

Plotter or Pantser?

For Fire Baptized, I was a pantser. I just wrote without any clear outline or direction. I ended up with 180,000 words. During the revision process I cut so much stuff. Fire Baptized was complete at 68,000 words. That’s a lot of stuff I cut.

As I write the sequel which is called The Burning Bush, I’ve become a plotter. I spent two weeks putting together an outline. I’m currently on Chapter 24. I'm really enjoying being a plotter. I have clear direction and I don’t feel like I’m wasting words and time.

Any odd quirks you'd like to share?

I bite my nails a lot. It’s ridiculous because I’m always telling my kids not to bite their nails.

What are the pros and cons of being self-published?

I would say the pro is having complete control of the self-publishing process. From the cover to the formatting, it’s really fun creating the entire concept and package.

The con is actually is also having complete control of the process. Editing is a long exhausting process that takes weeks of going over the book so many times that by the fiftieth time I’m sick of the book. I use three to four editors and have several beta readers. Each time someone reads it, I go over there notes and add or take away from the story.

What's coming up from you that you'd like to share with our readers?

Next week, I’m releasing a short story collection called Caged View that involves the three main characters of Fire Baptized. In May, I will release the sequel to Fire Baptized which is called The Burning Bush. Additionally, in July I will release a YA novel named Chameleon which is also set in Fire Baptized’s world, but will have less graphic violence and language.

Any questions you'd like to ask our readers?

I would love to know if anybody has found an awesome book for 2012 yet. With all of my writing it’s hard to take the time to find a great book. Any good recommendations?

Kenya Wright always knew she would be famous since the ripe old age of six when she sung the Michael Jackson thriller song in her bathroom mirror. She has tried her hand at many things from enlisting in the Navy for six years as a Persian-Farsi linguist to being a nude model at an art university.

However, writing has been the only constant love in her life.

Now Kenya is publishing her first book, Fire Baptized, the urban fantasy novel she always wanted to read. This novel is the first book in a series.

Will she succeed? Of course.

For she has been coined The Urban Fantasy Queen, the Super Iconic Writer of this Age, The Lyrical Genius of Our Generation. Granted, these are all terms coined by her, within the private walls of her bathroom as she still sings the Michael Jackson thriller song.

Kenya Wright currently resides in Miami with her three amazing, overactive children, a supportive, gorgeous husband, and three cool black cats that refuse to stop sleeping on Kenya’s head at night.

So, don’t forget to leave a comment. How can you go wrong?

And now, without further ado, please welcome Minnette:

I see that you write in a great number of genres. Do you find it a challenge to switch gears? Do you have a favorite genre in which to write?

Sometimes.

I have very unique “voices” for each genre that I like to use. You have to focus to maintain them as you write. My acting experience has taught me every character has a different tone and rhythm. I’ve extended that to every book has its own voice, just as every character within that story has theirs. For example, the historical novels have a slow elegance of language and my comedies are quick and frisky. THE BELLE STALKER, my first thriller, has fantasy, comedy, and suspense, so the voice is quite varied. Each element adds to the texture of the story. Or at least I hope it does! LOL I always say whatever I’m writing is my favorite genre and that’s probably very close to the truth. I’ve never met one I didn’t like.

Do you write more than one thing at a time?

Someone told me once that Sagittarians are very linear people. For me that is the absolutely truth. I like balance in my art, calm in my music, and to finish one thing before going onto another. If I have incomplete projects before I go onto the next, it drives me crazy, so I plow through and get one done before another. ~sigh~

What's a typical day for you?

Since I work full time, I won’t bore you with the humdrums of Monday – Friday and the frantic rushing at night to get stuff done, but the weekends are my days to write. There is no such thing as a typical day; again, being a Sagittarius I grow bored quickly of the same old routine (while at the same time thriving on it… go figure). My ideal day is:

1. Kiss my husband, and then again if it is called for.
2. Go through email/FB/Etc. over a cup of coffee and good tunes
3. Clean up my space (I’m not a neat freak but I can’t work on a messy desk… although the rest of the house doesn’t bother me so much)
4. Write, write, edit, write
5. Write, write, edit, write
6. Have DH throw food at me from time to time.

Ah, that would be heaven. The truth of the matter is I write in spurts, knocking out 10-15K at a sitting whenever I can get the world (and myself) to shut up long enough so I can work. Then I layer and edit for hours. I wrote the last 20 chapters of Centurion over four marathon days because an agent asked for a full and all I had was a very small partial. Necessity is an absolute mother sometimes.

Share any writing quirks or habits you have.

Writing in spurts is one. I listen to music, but it has to be absolutely perfect. I’ve spent hours looking for that perfect combination for each book. I can write anywhere… buses, cars, walking (yes, walking – I write dialogue while I walk), chatting with friends. My focus to pretty good when I’m motivated. I love coffee when I write, so I’ve adopted decaf since the docs won’t let me drink the stuff after 12 noon.

Who are some authors that have influenced or inspired you? Why? How much time do you have?

Just like writing, there are very few genres I don’t LOVE to read. The classics have always inspired me; I wish we could still write like that, but these days it’s frowned upon (I would LOVE to know what today’s publishers would think of Plato, Dickens, or even H.G. Wells). I started out in Sci-Fi/Fantasy so such writers as Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Robert Heinlein (a personal favorite), Frederick Brown, Piers Anthony, Farmer, Philip K. Dick, Larry Niven, Asimov, Greg Baer, and then sci-fi comedy writers like Douglas Adams, Spider Robinson, and Terry Prichard really influenced me. Ann McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Mary Stewart, Arthur Conan Doyle, Dorothy Sayers (the Lord Peter Wimsey series), and of course, one of my all time favorite writer, Rex Stout (of Nero Wolf fame). I read an eclectic assortment of books both fiction and non-fiction. I’m currently reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Haunted America, and several others. Though I can only write one book at a time, I can apparently read several at a time. It’s an enigma! Oh, and why do they inspire me? Because they are so flipping good! I mean, come on!

Do you have anything in the works we can look forward to? If so, tell us all about it!

The Egyptian Pirate (2012) - Hasani has a reputation to uphold as the world's greatest pirate; but that's hard to do when you're wasting away in a Syrian jail for making love to one of the Parthian king's daughters. For the first time in his life his luck has run out and he faces a very real possibility of losing his head for good this time. When a mysterious woman shows up and helps him to escape, he falls in love for the first time. The problem is... she is taken prisoner and swept away to Egypt, the last place he wants to be. Will he risk his life and riches to save her or follow old habits and simply walk away. There is something about this girl...

Haunted Hearts (2012) - Book II in the Ghost Series. Dyna is having a bad day... a really bad day. Her house is now filled with ghosts, the neighborhood association is trying to get her evicted, and she just found out she's pregnant with a demon child. To top everything off, a handsome cop thinks he can make it go away, but all he is doing is making it worse! What's a girl to do?

Phantom Hearts (2013) - Book III in the Ghost Series. He's suave, he's debonaire, he can say or do no wrong, the ladies love him, and life couldn't be any sweeter. That is until he finds out he's the devil's love child and strange things start happening around him. Enter a sexy, snoopy female reporter who not only seems immune to his charms but does everything she can to double his trouble. He simply can't resist her and that's where the fun begins. Will he fight the evil deeds blooming in his head or will he finally succumb to his father's wishes and "join" the family business. Only a crazy girl knows... and she's not talking.

Arpeggios In The Darkness (TBD) - Sci-Fi YA - It's hard being the first half-Alien/half-Human hybrid... Your mom and dad are gone all the time, the paparazzi follow you everywhere, and you find out your voice can kill. What's a girl to do?

Then I have several other work in the works (go here for a list). After this last tour this year, I’m heading into relative seclusion to get the next four books done.

Thanks so much or inviting me to this amazing blog site. You are an angel!

Would you share the blurb for The Belle Stalker?

The police have done all they can, but it isn’t enough. When Belle finds the mutilated body of her lover strewn across the furniture she knows only her ex-husband, Homicide Detective Mike Cranston can stop the maniac who has been dogging her steps for over a year. The only problem is the man who stalks her...is not a man at all. Belle plays a dangerous game and only hopes that Cranston can stop the monster before it’s too late.
