There’s a killer in Windsor intent on making Jesse Baker burn for the sins of others. But arson investigator David Hathaway isn’t about to let that happen. As the past echoes through their lives, will they remember that history, like fire, can give life just as easily as it can destroy it?

My review:

The blurb to this book isn't very descriptive, so I really didn't know what to expect.  First, while this is apparently part of a series (there are a couple other couples who are already married, and it's clear from their backstory they figured in previous books), it very, very easily stands alone.

What Echoes Render focuses in equal parts on the mystery and the romance, and juggles the two quite effectively. It also seasons the book with the feel of a small town community, and readers become well acquainted with many folks there.  It really combined some of my very favorite things to read, and added in exceptionally skilled writing and clean editing to make a book I very much enjoyed.

There were a few parts that were a bit slow, but they didn't happen often, and I suspect I know who the next book will be about, as we meet a man in this book who is clearly hero material. I really enjoyed reading about Jesse and David and their families and friends. They were good but flawed protagonists with believable backgrounds that fed their behavior.  The mystery was strong and, while I suspected the reason behind what was happening, there were enough red herrings to make me wonder.

As a fan of romantic suspense and small town stories, I really hit the jackpot here, and fully intend on both hunting up the previous books and will be waiting for the next in the series.  If not for the few places that dragged a bit, this book would have earned all five flowers, but even so, the author has made herself a fan and I'm so glad I got to read this book.

4.5 stars - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Jesse looked at the clock on her dash as she pulled into a spot across the street from Julie’s Spin-A-Yarn shop. She wasn’t too late, just about fifteen minutes. She spotted Julie out front chatting with Jason, the owner of the local health food store, and waved. Main Street was still quiet this time of day, except for those partaking of breakfast at Frank’s Fed Up and Fulfilled Café, and both proprietors looked up and waved back as she got out of her car.

She smiled and was just sliding her keys into her purse when a deep sound reverberated around her. In a flash, Jesse felt like she was being swallowed, like a weight was pressing against her entire body, stealing the air from her lungs, making it impossible to scream. A cacophony of sounds assaulted her ears, then suddenly everything seemed to slow down. Somehow, the noises that had seemed so angry before became dampened and muffled. With no time to comprehend or react to what was happening, she watched as the windows of Spin-A-Yarn erupted outward, exploding onto the street toward her.

Sullivan's Way by Wilhelmina Stolen - Book Review and Giveaway

(Historical Romance)

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Wilhelmina will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A single day shattered her life and set in motion, events that would change the Sullivan family for generations.

Marnie Joe Sullivan had the perfect life as the daughter of a wealthy Virginia businessman, but perfection wouldn't last. As the War Between the States ends, she is struggling to keep her family together. After a botched robbery, fleeing rebels leave her mother dead and Marnie at the mercy of a killer. The year is 1867 and Virginia is still home to Confederate conspirators and a killer that must be stopped. Loyalty and love run deep in the Sullivan family and Marnie is no exception. As the eldest Sullivan, she feels obligated to rescue her father from the hangman’s noose. But a jailbreak at midnight lands her in the arms of Marshal Mason Kane.

Death is never fair. Mason Kane is proof of that. The horror of war and the death of his brother made him a drunk. Consumed by guilt and grief, he finds himself occupying Richmond saloons and starting fights. But a forgotten promise to his brother forces him to put down the bottle and accept a friend’s plea for help. Mason has no idea that the scrawny, mud covered boy he just hit is Sullivan’s daughter and he has no idea just how tempting she is until he tries to mend her wounds. Bound by honor and promise, Mason sets out to find a killer. What he finds is the outlaw Marnie Sullivan. A woman he can’t live without and secrets that lie in the way.

Read my review:

I love big sprawling family sagas, where you can follow a family over generations, and I have just found another such series to feed my addiction. This is the first book of the Way of Hearts series which introduces the family.

The story jumps right into the action, with Marnie Joe planning a jail break. She's not had an easy life for the past year--her mother was killed and she and her sister captured by renegade Confederate soldiers. I half expected this to be the second book of the series--I was sure that there was another book which told this story. Checking the author's website I found out that I was close--there is a book that tells this story, but it's not until book six in the series (that's very sneaky, Ms. Stolen!)

Mason Kane is asked by a friend to see what's going on with the Sullivan's and he discovers more than he expects.

Filled with mystery, passion, misunderstandings, and --above all else--deep and abiding family love, Ms. Stolen has penned some characters who are very real and very engaging. They are definitely not perfect, but that's what makes them so interesting. This reader became very invested in them--to the point where she stayed up reading way too late!

The secondary characters were equally s well-drawn as Marnie and Mason. And, I was excited to see that the next book features two of these characters. There's a mystery surrounding Lucas and I can hardly wait to find out what it is. Hopefully some of it will be revealed this fall.

Good job, Ms. Stolen. With this one book, you have gone on my auto-buy list!

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Clear light made its way over the mountains, pouring into the valley, and a briskness clung to the morning air. Mason looked out over the porch railing at his first real look at the Sullivan place. Dawn had brought the land to life, and he could see at least ten houses scattered along the road. A horse and wagon galloped across the small wooden bridge. The saw mill that sat to the left began to scream as wood hit metal, and across the dirt road, children ran laughing into the church house that doubled as a school.

The land was small, but self-sufficient. With a little work, this settlement could be a thriving town. No wonder Talon wanted the place. Mason’s eyes followed the road as it curved and veered off to the right, into the tree line. Bright fingers of light climbed their way over the mountain and grabbed his attention. The top half of the mountain was nothing but massive boulders that dwindled off into the vegetation on one side, while the other side dropped a couple of hundred feet to the valley floor. He closed his eyes and lay back against the rocker. His mind went back to Marnie. That was her name. He ran his tongue over his lips, catching a hint of her sweetness. His hands opened and closed against his thighs. Thoughts of her made his hands tingle. His mind ventured back to the cabin, back to her body in the firelight. Mason could feel his body began to ache with need. Slowly, he opened his eyes and glanced down at his body. He rubbed his face and sat up. Damn frustrating!

Wilhelmina Stolen is the pseudonym for romance writer, Shannon Hayes. Shannon is a native of Kentucky and makes her home in small southern town close to the Tennessee line. During her adolescence, her mother's free spirited nature became restless causing the family to embark on a slew of adventurous moves across the country. The moves provoked a hunger for adventure and romance and introduced her to a wonderful world of history and beauty.

As with most writers, her stories began at an early age with long sessions of seclusion and secrecy. While her classmates and friends were outside playing, Shannon was locked away in her room hammering out ideas on an old 1940s Royal typewriter.

After finding Mr. Right, Shannon found herself wanting the comfort and security of the small Kentucky town she longed to escape as a child. Fortune smiled upon her and she became the family historian; gathering pictures, wills, marriage certificates and everything else that somehow managed to fall into her lap. Stories flooded her mind and writing quickly became an obsession that turned into the Way of Hearts Saga. The saga spans six generations and three families.

Savage Deception by R.T. Wolfe - Review and Giveaway

(Romantic Suspense)

This review is done in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $100 Amazon or BN gift card (winner's choice) to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Enter via the Rafflecopter at the end of the post, and you can see the rest of the stop by clicking on the tour banner.

Busy juggling loan sharks and Amber Alerts, Detective Nickie Savage makes time when the FBI seeks her expertise with a child trafficking ring. But when Nickie discovers that the men running the ring are the same ones who abducted her as a young teen, the case gets personal.

Risking her badge, Nickie goes rogue. Luckily, she has Duncan Reed, along with his wire tapping and surveillance expertise. But Duncan also wants to take their relationship to the next level.

Now, Nickie must choose: break her own rules and risk her heart or forge ahead alone.

My Review:

Some time ago, I read a book by this author in what seems to be a similar series.  She impressed me then, and she's still impressing me.  While I've clearly missed something previously (Duncan and Nickie are already a couple, and there's some backstory I didn't have and it took me a little while to catch up), I still dug right in to this book and really enjoyed it.

Nickie acts tough, but she's soft when it comes to Duncan, and no wonder. The man is crazy for her.  She's my favorite kind of heroine: smart, sassy, strong but one with heart.  I really enjoyed watching her do whatever it took to catch the bad guys, even when it was incredibly hard for her emotionally.

Duncan's awesome, too. I remember him from my other story about his brother and am glad he finally found his own love.  He's hot-headed, but loyal, smart and loving.  I don't think Nickie would have made it through this book without him, since she discovered something things that were pretty rough.  And Duncan's family is wonderful to behold.  Actually, all the secondary characters in this book really added flavor and fun.

The author is incredibly talented.  Her writing is strong, descriptive and nearly perfectly clean.  It's the kind of writing that essentially disappears and instead creates a movie in your mind.  I lost track of time with this book, once I figured out what was what.  It's exciting, interesting, nerve-wracking ... but it also touched my heart.  Clearly, I need to go back and grab her entire backlist because she writes the type of romantic suspense I really enjoy.

I'm so glad I got a chance to read this book.

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“This is our hotel.” Those were the only four words Nickie had spoken since Duncan picked her up at Vegas Metro. He’d expected her to be shaken after the day she’d had. He didn’t expect her to be shaking.

Heading for the elevator, he realized they were retiring to their room as the rest of the town was beginning their evenings. He heard them before the elevator arrived. Loud, drunk and male. The doors slid open to a small group of young men. They reeked of marijuana and alcohol. One did a double take at Nickie.

“The cop stripper!” he slurred. “I got your card in here somewhere.” He patted his pockets.

Nickie wore what she usually did. Button-down blouse, this one raspberry-pink, and black slacks … both tighter than most wear. She was never afraid to use her sexuality when it suited her. Her black boots had heels. Her gun was secured on her belt, along with her badge and cuffs.

Duncan saw it all through an angry haze of red.

The one patting his pockets took out some cash. The others whistled as they pulled out more Duncan stepped in front of Nickie.

“Come on, dude. Share!” they boy said to Duncan.

He wasn’t sure whose arm it was, but before he knew it a hand cupped her breast. As quickly as the arm reached her, Nickie twisted and had it wrenched behind the man’s back. “That’s assaulting a police officer, you stupid piece of shit.” Her voice was eerily calm.

“Hey!” another one defended, landing a hand on her shoulder. Duncan took it, bending it back until he heard a crack. The boy bellowed in pain as his friends stepped in to help.

Fists flew and heads bobbed. They were drunk and young. That excuse wasn’t going to help them. Duncan ducked easily taking two down with solid hooks as he heard the soft heels of the security officer running toward them.

Happy Medium by Meg Benjamin - review and giveaway

(Paranormal romance)

This review is posted in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Meg will be awarding the complete Ramos Family Trilogy: Medium Well, Medium Rare, and Happy Medium (all ebooks) to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click the banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Love is good for the soul… unless it’s one that you’re trying to exorcise.

Ray Ramos has a problem–the King William District mansion he and his business partner purchased for a fast renovation needs more work than expected. Ray could use a quick infusion of cash. Enter Emma Shea, assistant to Gabrielle DeVere, the star of American Medium. Gabrielle is looking for San Antonio houses to use for her televised séances, and Ray’s fixer upper seems to fit.

When Gabrielle does a sample séance, Ray and Emma become the target of a touchy ghost with no respect for boundaries. After Ray learns his family has a special affinity for ghosts, the two decide to investigate the haunted house. It doesn’t hurt that Emma is immediately attracted to the laconic Ray or that Ray is intrigued by the buttoned-down beauty who seems determined to hide her considerable assets behind sober business suits. But can the two of them fight off a vengeful succubus bound to the house while getting a lot closer than either of them planned?

MY REVIEW: Full of fun, heat and suspense, Happy Medium was a story that entertained from start to finish.

I really liked Ray.  He was primal and earthy and interesting and loyal.  He was who he was and if you didn't like it, too bad. But you knew where you stood with him and that goes a long way with me.

Emma was just a little sad.  She felt so desperate at the start, eager to please and always feeling like she was falling just a little short. Gabrielle was so much larger than life, I'm sure Emma never felt like she measured up.  It broke my heart a little every time Gabrielle insinuated that Emma was fat, and Emma's self-esteem dropped.

That's okay, though. Ray changes all that... boy howdy!  He's hot to start with, but when they start going toe-to-toe with a succubus, things get even hotter.

Happy Medium is an interesting story, populated with unique, three-dimensional characters and plenty of action in the bedroom.  It hit all my happy buttons, and I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.

4.5 flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“It’s nice here,” she mumbled. Great. Somehow whenever she wanted to be smooth she ended up sounding like a doofus. Yet another indication she was out of her league with Ray Ramos.

“Yeah.” His fingers brushed across her cheek, and he moved closer.

The hell with it. It might be a temporary thing, but right now temporary worked. She pushed up on her tiptoes, resting one hand against his shoulder. For a moment, his breath was on her cheek, warm against the cooling night air. And then she brought her lips to his.

All the comparisons that leapt to her mind were clichés. Electricity. Wild fires. Lightning bolts. And none of them really described the feeling that broadsided her, like her whole body was suddenly tingling with life. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling herself closer.

He tasted of spice and smoke, smelled slightly of sweat and musk. He leaned back against the railing of the bridge, pulling her deeper into his arms, bending her body beneath his own so that her hips pressed against his, against the hard jut of his arousal.

His tongue moved across the seam of her mouth and she opened for him, letting her tongue slide along his. Another wave of heat washed over her. His hands slid over her back, untucking her shirt, fingers against bare skin. She pushed his T-shirt aside to feel him too, the faint crinkle of hair against her palms as she touched his stomach. In some distant part of her brain it occurred to her that a passing pedestrian would have quite a view, assuming the two of them weren’t totally protected by the shadows of the trees.

And she didn’t care. Whatever happened now. She didn’t give a damn.

Special Attraction by ML Ryan - Review and Giveaway

(Paranormal Romance)

This review is in conjunction with a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly drawn commenter will receive a $20 Amazon/BN GC.

The weirdness continues….

Thanks to a magical transplant from an inter-dimensional enforcer, Hailey Parrish can transform into a hawk. When someone begins dismembering hikers along the Appalachian Trail, the enforcers make use of her feathery talents to pursue the killer. Unfortunately, like most things in Hailey’s life, there is nothing ordinary about the assignment. Their target turns out to be maddeningly elusive, they rescue a stray dog that makes a sewage treatment plant seem pleasantly fragrant, and stopping the murders turns out to be the least of their worries.

Special Attraction, the third book in the Coursodon Dimension series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.
We featured the first book of the series here. This is the third book and it was hold-onto-your-seat full of action and humor. Oh, and romance. Do NOT forget the romance. Alex (pause for heavy sigh) is an absolute dream and Hailey's life has not been the same since she met him and Sebastian. And, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Even though this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read on its own. Ms. Ryan gives just enough details of what happened previously that you don't feel lost. I'm sure, though, that reading it in conjunction with the other books could only make things better. I especially would like to read how Hailey and Alex (pause for heavy sigh) got together.

It was a quick read... I read it in one sitting, which these days is not easy for me, just because of how busy I am, but once I started it, I could not put it down. And there were several laugh out loud moments. Ms. Ryan has created some wonderfully quirky characters that I just fell in love with...and Alex (pause for heavy sigh), let's just say he's my new book boyfriend.

Don't take my word for how awesome he is, though. Take a look at this excerpt:

After a cursory hug, my mother stepped back and surveyed me from head to toe. For once, I was confident she’d have something positive to say. I’d kept up with the hardcore workout schedule Sebastian developed to keep my destructive power in check. I knew I looked fantastic.

“Hailey,” she declared finally, “now that your body isn’t so pear-shaped, you have a lovely figure.”

Wow. Only she could put me down and pat me on the back all in the same statement. Rather than be insulted, I really needed to appreciate her mastery of the backhanded compliment.

Finished with me, her penetrating gaze shifted to Alex. “And I suppose this must be your boyfriend.”

There was no question involved, and I knew when she said “boyfriend,” she really meant “the pervert that must be ravishing your body without the benefit of marriage.” I refused to take the bait, however, and plastered a perma-grin on my face that would make any cheerleader proud.

“Yes, this is Alex. Alex, these are my parents, Tom and Barbara Parrish.”

Alex flashed one of his glorious smiles, which, unlike mine, was actually genuine. “I am so please to finally meet you both,” he said smoothly. Huh. He sounds like he actually means it. Go figure.

About the Author
M.L. Ryan is a professional woman - which is not to say that she gave up her amateur status, but rather that she is over-educated with a job that reflects her one-time reluctance to leave school and get "real" work – and she spends a lot of time in that profession reading highly technical material.

She has many stories rolling around in her head, and she finally decided to write some of them. She prefers literature that isn’t saddled with excruciating symbolism, ponderous dialogue or worldly implications. She also doesn’t like plots so reliant on love at first sight that it makes her feel like her head might implode.

She lives in Tucson, Arizona with her husband and teenage son, four cats, two dogs and an adopted desert tortoise.

Secret Sister by Emelle Gamble - Review tour and giveaway

(Full length women's fiction with romantic elements)

This review is posted in conjunction with the author's virtual book tour with Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a $100 Amazon gift certificate to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter (see the end of this post). Click the tour banner above to see the other stops on the tour.

To their friends, Nick and Cathy Chance have the perfect marriage. High school sweethearts who’ve been together for ten years, they’ve weathered challenges and are as committed as they were when they first fell in love. Cathy trusts Nick, Nick’s world revolves around his wife, and the future looks golden.

To everyone who knows them, Cathy Chance and Roxanne Ruiz have a perfect friendship. They connected in grade school and since then have been each other’s confident and trusted advisor. Cathy loves the gorgeous Roxanne like a sister, Roxanne has fun-loving Cathy’s back in every situation, though lately there’s been tension between these two best friends…

And then, on a sunny summer morning, the unthinkable occurs, throwing into doubt the truth of what each of these people really know about themselves and one another.

Will Roxanne’s sacrifice be too little, and too late? Should Nick’s love for his wife be strong enough to risk trusting his heart more than logic? Can Cathy’s devotion to Nick give her enough strength to convince him to see her for who she really is?

Secret Sister proves how strong, how stubborn, and how trustworthy love can be as Nick and Cathy and Roxanne are challenged to overcome the secrets, the lies … and one extraordinary twist of fate that turns their lives upside down.

This is a book that will put you through the wringer emotionally.  The characters are unique and three dimensional and full of both admirable traits and flaws.  With a paranormal twist I didn't see coming, I was involved with this story from the start.

The author has a strong, clear voice and helps the reader really see the scene as it unfolds.  Sometimes what happens isn't good or happy, and sometimes the characters make me want to slap them silly (Roxanne at the beginning and Nick for much of the book about drove me batty).  That I got so involved in them speaks volumes, though, to Ms. Gamble's skill with her writing.

There were some parts of the book I didn't like ... but not because of the writing. Because I didn't like the route the story took in places.  Some decisions that were made rubbed me wrong, even when I could understand why the character made them.  And certainly the author doesn't give her characters and easy time of things... it's just heart-breaking so much of the time, right up to the end.

This is a good book for readers who appreciate character driven, intensely emotional stories.

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“May I sit down, Nick?”

I nodded. Roxanne sat at the table in the kitchen. Despite her appearance, she seemed in control. I felt her eyes on me as I poured myself a glass of water.

The kitchen was a mess. For a second I was embarrassed by the dirty dishes, the soured milk on the counter. Then I got a grip. This wasn’t a social call and Roxanne wasn’t someone I was trying to impress. Every time she walked into the room, she did so with an agenda.

I turned around. “Do you want something to drink?”

She shook her head.

I sat across from her. She was pinching the back of her hand, like Cathy used to do.

“What’s going on? What do you want from me?” I sounded angrier than I thought I was.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re fooling around with your hands exactly like Cathy always did. You never had that habit. Why are you doing stuff like that?”

“What else am I doing?”

“You’re wearing your hair pulled back in a ribbon, and clothes like my wife wore.” I pointed at her blouse. “And you’re acting weird with the cat, like she’s your cat, among other things. It’s freaking my sister out.”

Roxanne fidgeted. “That’s ridiculous,” she said, but her face revealed I’d hit a nerve...

Can forgiveness survive lies and unspoken truths?

Until Brenda McAllister’s husband committed suicide, she appeared to have the ideal life: a thriving psychology practice, success as a self-help author, and a model family. But her guilt over her affair with Jack’s best friend prevents her from moving on. Did Jack learn of her infidelity? Was she the cause of his death?

The release of Brenda’s second book forces her into an unexpected assignment with arrogant celebrity author CJ Morrison, whose irritating and edgy exterior hides the torment of his own mistakes. But as she grows closer to CJ, Brenda learns she wasn’t the only one with secrets—Jack had secrets of his own, unsavory ones that may have led to his death. While CJ helps Brenda uncover the truth about her husband, she finds the path to forgiveness isn’t always on the map.

This story began with Brenda rushing to get a cup of coffee at the hotel where she was staying. When she turned, going back to her room, she bumped into CJ, spilling hot coffee down the front of his jacket as he was heading out for a very important meeting. As you can imagine, this didn’t go over well with CJ. He let her know in no uncertain terms what he thought of her. Unfortunately, Brenda had been hired to work with him on his upcoming book. You can imagine how the sparks flew between them.

As I continued reading, I realized that this was not a typical romance. Neither was a young, 20 to 30 year old. They were much more mature. As a psychologist, Brenda knew better, but CJ brought out the worst in her, much to her dismay. I really enjoyed the verbal back and forth battles between the two of them. As they fought, they each discovered things about themselves that they needed to learn.

The romance between them did evolve, and it was done in a beautiful and realistic way. Each had things in their past that had to be resolved. They each tried to hide these things from the other. Brenda was still dealing with the suicide of her husband two years before, and CJ had never gotten over the death of his wife in an automobile accident ten years previously.

As they continued meeting, their delightful back and forth arguments continued, but they actually began to enjoy them. It was fun watching them resolve their problems and really get to know each other. Also, there were mysteries involved with the death of both partners that they had to deal with-- CJ, because he felt guilty and thought he had caused the death of his wife, and Brenda because she couldn’t understand why her husband had killed himself.

How these mysteries were resolved was so well done, I felt I was sitting by the characters as things happened. This writer is exceptional, and the way you get to know all her characters so completely is outstanding. She showed how people can overcome life’s obstacles and begin to live again. I really enjoyed this story.

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

An unexpected gravitational pull swelled Brenda’s anger. Her cute quip ran into hiding. She no longer cared about winning this man’s favor. His rudeness left her feeling as if she’d been doused with hot coffee this time. Brenda clenched her fists. A year of internal browbeating over Jack’s suicide had left her easily irritated.

Brenda gripped the frail edges of her self-control. “I once again offer my apologies for the accident, by definition an unplanned event with lack of intent.” He looked down his sturdy, Grecian nose at her, so she stood and put her hands on her hips. “Shouldn’t you, as a writer, know that?”

Every line on his face tensed. “I could do without your sarcasm.” He leaned closer. “Thanks to you, I missed my meeting. Maybe tomorrow morning you could get room service.”

The brunette unleashed a tight smirk. CJ motioned for them to move on.

Brenda fumbled for a good retort. As he stepped away, the last word went with him. The same way Jack had the last word in their life together. A silent explosion went off inside Brenda’s head and propelled her anger forward.

“Mr. Morrison?” She raised her voice to be heard above the crowd.

He looked over his shoulder and arched a questioning eyebrow.

Brenda crossed her arms and fixed a phony smile as she nodded toward his companion. “It’s so nice of you to bring your daughter to the conference.”

Dixon's Place by William Corradini -- Reviews Tour and Giveaway

(Non-fiction, Animal lover's, Human interest story)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual tour with Goddess Fish Promotions. William will be awarding a $10 Wild Child Publishing GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. so comment here today for your chance to win! Click the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

When Bill and Meghan Corradini, an affluent and self-described spoiled young couple, decide they want ducks to adorn the pond they plan to build at their dream home, neither of them can imagine the mayhem, heartbreak and joy that will ensue.

Bill decides to purchase a couple of ducks but when there are just three left, he cannot abandon the third sibling, so all three come home with him and are promptly named after players for his beloved college team, the Oregon Ducks—despite the fact that all are female. He and Meghan set about spoiling and pampering their ducks, lavishing them with love.

Unfortunately, despite precautions, tragedy strikes and it changes Bill and Meghan in a profound way. Bill tells Meghan that he wants to make a difference in the lives of abandoned, abused and neglected animals. They decide to devote their time and resources to doing just that.

Along the way, both mature and their bond is deepened and strengthened as they face numerous emotional trials, most revolving around the animals they rescue and usually end up adopting. Within short order, one animal becomes two and the additions to their household multiply. Their lives are irreversibly changed and enriched.

In caring for these animals, Bill and Meghan discover their purpose in life, serve as examples to their friends and family and realize their deep capacity for love—both for the animals they work with and for each other. Their story is inspiring and never dull. It will resonate with animal lovers everywhere.

As an animal lover, I looked forward to reading this book.  And I have to say I enjoyed every bit. I was a bit hesitant for a couple of reasons. First, I knew from the blurb something awful was going to happen to put the rest of the book into motion (and it does... and I cried like a baby), and the first chapter is all about the humans in this story, and tells quite honestly how spoiled and self-centered they are.  The writer makes no bones about it, and in fact has a checklist at one point to emphasize the point.  I wondered how I would ever come to like reading about folks who were so clearly removed from my own.

Don't worry, I did.  And I bet you will, too.

Honestly, animals can change the hardest heart, and our protagonists are hard-hearted, just selfish.  But, boy howdy, does that change.  It's not (entirely) overnight, but I was amazed at just how much of a 180 degree turn they do.  And it started with three ducklings.

The author has such a way with words.  He doesn't waste them, but he's not brief either.  I imagine parts of this were terrifically difficult to write as it's not always a flattering picture, but he does it without flinching.  The only time I had trouble was in dialogue, where he seems allergic to contractions (unless they actually talk that way, which would also seem odd).  Every time it happened, it jolted me.  Thankfully, it wasn't often

There is a depth of emotion here when it comes to the animals.  It surprises the protagonists, but not me as much (as I know how animals can change lives).  I admit to not being a huge bird fan when it comes to pets, though this book changed my mind a bit.

All in all, a completely enjoyable read and one I'm glad I read.  Worthwhile, interesting and very tidily compose.  Well done, Mr. Corradini!

4.5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

It wasn’t difficult to identify their hangouts, as we would find wet spots along with multiple rabbit pellets. Fortunately, due to rabbits’ rapid digestion and diet, the pellets give off no odor whatsoever. I even watched Bear Grylls on Man vs. Wild say you can eat these pellets, as he started to munch them like raisins. I was never in the British Special Forces nor did I get paid to put disgusting things in my mouth, so I have passed on this advice to this point. We placed a litter box by the fireplace and another one in Meghan’s office and that seemed to do the trick. There would be the occasional accident, but they used their litter boxes most of the time. They were better trained than Meghan’s purebred “show dog lineage” mutts.

Lesson number two—rabbits love to chew shit, especially wood. The unfortunate thing about this little nugget is that the interior of our house is almost nothing but wood. Kitchen cabinets, window ledges and frames in breakfast and living areas, cabinets and shelves in living room, floor, dining table, hutch—everything wood. We had two options: remove either the wood or the bunnies or give them other things to chew on. We bought them all kinds of wood and cardboard toys. We surrendered our woven baskets.

We even bought them, from Rabbitrescue.org, a three- level, cardboard castle. This castle was something else. It had miscellaneous shapes for windows at every level and an easy step to get from floor to floor, including the balcony on top. Fortunately, the floors were replaceable, as Myron chewed his way from the balcony to the second floor. You want reprieve from a bad day, try watching two bunnies sticking their heads out of a cardboard castle and stay in a bad mood.

William Corradini, 42 years old, lives in Keller, TX with his wife of 10 years, Meghan. He is a sales manager at Staples Advantage where he has been for over 13 years.

William grew up on a ranch in Eastern Oregon and he spent most of his youth around farm animals, dogs, cats, parrots and any other four-legged furry, fuzzy creatures that decided to call their ranch home.

William has lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for 20 years and for much of that time had adopted the ‘city life style’. He had all but rejected his roots and his interests in animals. This all changed in 2008-and it started with him buying three ducks.

Review: Flying in Shadows by RT Wolfe - virtual tour and giveaway

Andy Reed is a fast-talking, high-flying building developer and has been in love exactly one time in his life. Dr. Rosemarie Piper has not only been his best friend since childhood, she is the most highly respected upcoming conservation biologist in the northeast who can, also, hold her own in a bar fight. Rose learned her love for conservation from her mother. She learned her love for Andy through a lifetime of memories and connections. What she had never learned was she was the product of a brutal assault by a serial rapist and extortionist. Rose’s mother worked for twenty-six years to keep Rose’s identity hidden. Now, Andy vows to keep their polar differences from ripping them apart while keeping her safe and catching a killer.

Flying in Shadows was a surprise for me to read -- nothing like what I thought it would be from the blurb, but richer and far more romantic than expected.

It's not that it's NOT a suspense. It is.  But there was far more attention paid to the relationship between Rose and Andy, especially since we pretty much get to read about them growing up in the first several chapters.  There are still clues dropped and some suspsenseful moments, but the focus is on them.

I liked Andy and Rose.  And together, they're unbeatable. Andy is so great -- he lets Rose take care of herself, but he also has her back (and she knows it).  What amazing strength that gives her.  And, as the story continues and we discover the person behind the stuff that's happening, she's going to need that strength and support.

RT Wolfe does a great job creating a society of people I cared about.  The small town feel, the families, the intimacy were all part and parcel of why I enjoyed this book so much. While it was the second in a series, I really don't feel like I missed anything.  However, I did go buy book one, and after I read it, I may go back and read this one again, just to see if I can catch the small things, the nuances and whatnot that I probably wasn't aware I'd missed.

For a completely enjoyable romantic suspense that may not necessarily keep you on the edge of your seat, but will absolutely touch your heart, I recommend Flying in Shadows.  I'm so glad I got introduced to RT Wolfe.  I'll be on the lookout for more from her.

Rated 4.5 Flowers -- This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Walking in the dark, Andy readjusted his tackle box. Moonlight shone on the dark ripples creeping down Black Creek. He spotted a raccoon as he crossed the bridge. Startled, the animal hissed at him. Andy stomped his foot and hissed back; he was in no mood for it.

He saw movement in his peripheral vision. Larger movement. A man? The shape disappeared as quickly as Andy imagined it. When you let yourself get this worked up, you start seeing things, he chided himself.

What the hell had he been thinking when he decided to date Candi?

He would go over to her house first thing the next day to end it and all of the maintenance that came with her. Never again, he vowed. He would be more like his brother. Casual relationships. No strings.

But first, he needed Rose.

She would calm him down and lighten his mood, help him feel normal again. He looked at his watch and winced. What were friends for if you couldn't count on them to be there? Even at this time of night. Or morning.

* * *

Rose slept soundly in her twin bed dreaming of her favorite spot at the zoo. In the small rain forest building, she allowed a newly emerged monarch butterfly to dry its wings on her apron while sharing facts about the insect to one of two visiting young boys. The other threw pebbles into the nearby wishing pond. The sound of the small rocks plunked as they hit the stone wall before dropping into the water.

Oh, crap. She woke and sat up straight. The plunking noise came from outside, not in her head.

She felt her cheeks tighten in a wide smile. Biting the nails on one hand, she ripped her blankets off with the other. As she hustled to her window, she realized it was still pitch black out.

Grabbing the flashlight she always kept on her windowsill for just this occasion, she lifted the window and found Andy with the beam. "I thought you didn't get home until tomorrow," she whispered loudly.

"It is tomorrow." He held up fishing poles and tackle box.

"It's not tomorrow until the sun comes up." She smiled wildly as she pulled on her jeans. This reaction she had to him had to stop eventually, she convinced herself. It was not healthy.

"I've got the worms. Get down here."

Quickly, she tied her hair in a bandana, cleaned herself up and slipped on some sneakers. She scribbled out a quick note and headed for the front door. Her feet stopped before she did causing her throw her arms out for balance. Another dead bolt? When did this happen? she wondered.

R.T. Wolfe’s romantic suspense, Black Creek Burning, is the first in a series set in beautiful upstate New York. She enjoys creating diverse characters and twining them together in the midst of an intelligent mystery and a heart encompassing romance.

It’s not uncommon to find dark chocolate squares in R.T.’s candy dish, her Golden Retriever at her feet and a few caterpillars spinning their cocoons in their terrariums on her counters. R.T. loves her family, gardening, eagle-watching and can occasionally be found viewing a flyover of migrating whooping cranes.

When a normally quiet and polite Vampire Slayer is tasked to help an arrogant and selfish demon, only trouble can ensue.

Guilt-ridden by a mistake that cost her fellow Slayers their lives and the subsequent tarnished reputation of her brother’s business, Slayer-born Elise Castle agrees to work with the sexy, but arrogant and selfish, Xavier Doom, by bringing in his demon-turned-vampire friend. If she succeeds, her brother can hire more Slayers while Xavier’s status guarantees them more clients.

Xavier is a Fallen, a special kind of demon with an insatiable appetite for women, money and power. When his best friend is kidnapped and turned into a vampire, he hires the best Slayer money can buy. If the Slayer fails, Xavier stands to lose not only his childhood friend, but the opportunity to skyrocket his wealth with the top secret information hidden in his friend’s mind.

Xavier’s arrogance grates on her nerves while his concern and charm reels Elise in. But can she give her heart to a creature like her father, a Fallen, who had abandoned his family for the appeal of money and power? Or will she see Xavier for the good and loyal man he truly is?

Defiant and strong-willed, Elise is a challenge. Yet her strength and courage appeals to Xavier while her no sex policy has him hot for her. As his feelings for her grow, he must make a decision. Give his heart and soul to a woman who can only offer him her love, or walk away from her and seize the chance for more money and power?

Lives and friendships are at stake while love and loyalty is put to the test. Will Elise and Xavier come out unscathed and together? Or will a secret from Elise’s past tear them apart?

Hot, hot, hot!

This is a smokin' hot, sexy paranormal with plenty of action and suspense that's really well written. I completely enjoyed reading it from beginning to end, and was intrigued by its premise.  More, since the fallen are exceptionally sexual beings, this book has no lack of steam.

I really enjoyed meeting Elise.  What a great heroine!  She's the strongest slayer out there (partly due to being half fallen), but sticks by her brother even when it looks like his business is going down the tubes.  I admired her staunch loyalty. It was very admirable. She's the kind of woman most of us would like to be:  sexy, smart, independent.  She has her flaws (temper being the worst one), and struggles with recurring nightmares, but I really think she was just a great character.

It took me a bit longer to warm up to Xavier (or "X").  He comes of domineering, pushy and crude at first, but once we get some of his POV and climb into his head awhile, he becomes much more sympathetic.

Loved the story, loved the secondary characters and really enjoyed all the various, believable conflicts this author brought to the book.  Very well done.

4.5 flowers -- This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Wicked Paradise by Erin Richards - Review tour and giveaway

(Full length fantasy romance)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual tour with Goddess Fish Promotions.

Erin will award one commenter at every stop an eBook copy of her paranormal romantic suspense novel, "Chasing Shadows"(published by Ellora’s Cave Blush imprint);and one randomly drawn commenter on the tour will receive a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card, winner’s choice, so comment today AND follow the tour (if you click on the tour banner above, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. Balanced between the future and the past lies a pre-utopian paradise that may be mankind’s last hope for survival. Yet the island hides a sinister secret…a fearsome demon from ancient Ireland is imprisoned there and it’s about to escape to the twenty-first century.

Desperate to save a future post-apocalyptic world from total destruction, sorcerers send the most powerful sorceress from medieval times, Morgan of the Druids, through time to an island prison to kill WindWraith, the long-imprisoned Fomorian demon.

After a deadly squall tosses Druid-assassin Ryan O’Rourke into the Pacific Ocean, he washes ashore on an unchartered island brimming with magic. Ryan’s determined to find a way to return to Earth’s wasteland to battle the resurrected Fomorians plaguing the dwindling human race. When he stumbles across the enchantress who tantalizes his dreams to the point of madness, his plans turn upside down. For she stirs in him a hunger that puts his life’s purpose at risk.

Morgan has no choice but to kill the Fomorian before it kills her. But Ryan has other plans for the demon . . . Now Morgan and Ryan must decide between love and duty in a perilous race against the evil that could destroy Earth.

Fascinating!

Truly, Ms. Richards did a wonderful job painting a picture of the worlds we visit in this book.  We start in Avalon of long ago, end up in a time, post-apocalyptic, but on an idyllic island full of charm and beauty (oh, and a demon ... yeah, maybe not so idyllic), and we also see a bit of the world outside the island,  all but destroyed by Formorians.

There was seldom a time I was bored.  I admit to being a bit skeptical of the romance at first -- I'm not a fan of books with "predestined" love affairs, and this one had all the earmarks of that -- but the author gives us a twist, and doesn't have the protagonists fall into bed or into love, despite their overwhelming desire and ultimately admiration for each other.  This denial of lust builds the sexual tension to a near-frenzy and was exactly the kind of thing I look for in a love story.

Honestly, I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed this book.  It's well-written, has three dimensional characters, plenty of action and suspense, lots of smoldering heat and a thread of fear throughout along with an ending that is completely satisfying.

I've never heard of the author before, but I'm sure glad I have now.  She's truly talented and has an incredible imagination.  I can't wait for more!

4.5 flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“Run.” Ryan gently pushed her in front of him. “Keep to the right.” She tore off in the direction he pointed, heedless of the limbs and plants lashing her arms and legs, snagging her clothing, reaching for her and trying to cling. Was the island also afraid of the Fomorian?

“There’s a path down the cliff you flew off earlier. It leads to a naturally shielded cave.” He nudged her from behind, his hand firm in the hollow of her back.

Tornado howls grew deafening. Morgan tripped over a crumbling log, and Ryan grabbed her waist from behind to prevent her from planting her face in a prickly bramble. Hot and solid, his hands pulled her against his slick torso. Wretched jungle! You wasted no time to push us together again.

“Thank you.” Waning energy forced her to wheeze out the words. Before she lost all her stamina and wilted to the ground, Ryan picked her up, cradled her to his chest. His heart pounded against her shoulder, his internal fire wrapped around her, turning her muscles to mush. “Is it much farther?” She gave into his strength. So be it, island. You’ve had your say for now.

He shook his head. “I’m sorry,” he muttered, shame flirted with his immutable arrogance in the downturn of his mouth. He veered to the left and headed down a short, steep incline. “I shouldn’t have been a power-tripping jackass.”

A voracious reader since childhood, it was no hard leap to recognize that Erin wanted to be a writer at a young age. After bemoaning the lack of young adult books to read, Erin wrote her first novel at the age of eighteen hoping to shift the tide. Then everyday life took its toll on her writerly dreams until 2003 when she couldn’t ignore the writing bug any longer. By then, she had immersed herself in reading adult fantasy and romance novels. Writing paranormal & fantasy romance was a no brainer. Her first novel CHASING SHADOWS, a paranormal romantic suspense, is now available in print for the first time. Crimson Romance released her second novel WICKED PARADISE, a fantasy romance, on August 13, 2012. Erin will finally realize her lifelong dream of publishing a young adult novel when VIGILANTE NIGHTS debuts in July 2013.

Erin Richards lives in Northern California where she drafts and negotiates high-technology contracts during the day. When she’s not working or writing, she enjoys reading, photography, and American muscle cars.
