Detective Ramsey flung the door open, the doorknob etching into the paster wall. He didn’t care about this room of horrors.

It was still a crime scene with broken police tape on the floor after all these years. No one had entered this room since they had found the monk’s body sprawled on the floor in a fetal position, his hands reaching for the sky as though announcing himself to his creator in his dying moments. But the detective thought it was a naïve end, as the priest had been charged with the murder of a boy in 1970. He was a criminal. A paradox to think a murderer could enter the kingdom of heaven.

“The white marking on the floor is where the priest was found dead,” Detective Ramsey said.

Clarisse tentatively stepped into the room. She felt something morbid.

“Death lives here,” she said.

“What do you mean?” the detective asked.

“Whoever died here never left. His soul remains, I mean.”

“His spirit occupies the room?” The detective raised his eyebrows.

“The monk died a shallow death, questioned his faith, and held his hands up to the Lord to save him.” She paused, held her palms in front of her, and closed her eyes. “But it was too late. He had already traded his soul with the demon and knew it.”

“A desperate attempt to avoid the confines of hell?”

Clarisse nodded. “In our hour of death, the truth always comes out, Detective. All the things we lust for in the immortal world become insignificant. Because it’s in our last minutes, as we cling to life, that we realize we have a soul.”

The detective placed his hands in his pocket. “I don’t know what to make of that, Clarisse. You’re saying we learn about the afterlife in our hour of death?”

“Yes, even nonbelievers come to terms with that.”

“And that is more frightening than death itself? To think that there is life after death?”

“And then Detective, it is too late to reverse the course of your life.”

WHAT EVIL LURKS BENEATH

Lindsay looked on as Father O’Connor tried desperately to control his emotions. He thrust the old skeleton key into the mortice lock of the basement door, fixated on one thing only—to confront his deepest fears that lived in that room. Just being in Ward C of Willow Court Asylum was enough to set off an emotional reaction—to get even with the devil in there.

“The demon knows we’re here,” Father O’Connor said. He was holding his cross in one hand and a small bottle of holy water in the other. Although he was composed, the sacred water rattled in his hand.

Lindsay looked back at him as his eyes filled with sadness for all the victims who had lost their lives to the wicked Dr. Pendergrass. “The demon mustn’t sense any fear, or it will take advantage. We come armed with God’s word, filled with the Holy Spirit. We’re strong, Father. Don’t fear the evil that has tormented us for over a century.”

Father O’Connor didn’t respond. He knew Lindsay was right, because the only way to defeat a demon was not to expose your worst fears. Demons had an uncanny way of measuring your apprehension and using it to their advantage.

“It’s the signature of evil you are smelling, Father. They all have a different odor. It’s how we identify them.”

Five Things You Might Not Know About Me

1. I like to visit haunted houses and I use a spirit box app on my phone to try and establish an energy source or presence. These haunted houses inspire me to write ghost stories and finding unique settings. There is many ghost towns in Australia that grew from boom-and-bust gold mines. It makes history so interesting in terms of people, their life struggles, disease, and death.

2. When I was about ten years old, I saw a ghost in my room. I was terrified, and I called for my parents. It was so real I have never forgotten about it after all this time. It was the ghost of a man in uniform kneeling in front of a fireplace. The ghost never looked at me, but it wasn’t threatening in any way—just disturbing for a child. When my parents came racing into the room it disappeared.

3. I am Australian and grew up in the city of Melbourne. That means I speak with an Aussie accent. “Good on ya mate! Let’s throw another shrimp on the barbie.”

4. Janice Tremayne is my pen name. I am a male author. I created Janice because I was changing genre and it made sense from a marketing perspective. I also wanted to keep my business life separate from writing. Most people are ok with me using a pen name—it does not seem to bother them. I hope it does not bother the readers of this blog.

5. When I wrote my first book in the horror genre, I did not know what I was doing. I had no idea of book marketing and building a readership (audience). I wasted a lot of time and marketing my first book as an unknown and without having a follow-up sequel to continue the relationship. One fundamental mistake after another.

He hung with the rope around his neck, his tongue sticking out with a red-starved oxygen face. At the same time, he was smiling as though he was only having fun. Death was a reenactment that he had become accustomed to, to the point he thought it funny; a way of horrifying others and making them pay attention. He had a young mind—innocent and conditioned to get the attention of others. Little Charlie didn’t know whether he was dead or alive; far too young to understand. As far as he was concerned, tying a loop around his neck, jumping, and choking to death made him realize he felt no pain. He could do it over and over again.

The screams continued to play out on the phone. Jamie was not holding it during the attack, but it laid on the floor next to him with the video running.

“He wanted us to see it,” said Bolder.

“Who, what do you mean?”

“The demon…he purposely put the phone on an angle so it could capture his possession of Jamie.”

“He wanted us to watch the whole dastardly act?”

“More than that…he wanted to make us sick. Frighten us into submission—give up and walk away.”

Fixated on the five-minute video; images of Jamie handled by the demon played out in the act of evil. The devil tied his feet and hands, and they slowly lifted him from the ceiling upside down—hanging like a bat. Jamie screamed in pain as the demon ripped off the skin from his torso to prepare the marking of the pentagram. Blood oozed from the deep red exposed flesh as agonizing cries of help went unanswered.

It was an evil creature with huffs and a tail…hairy lower body in the shape of a dog. The upper torso of the demon was human, and it still managed to stand on two feet. She heard a flurry of steps run across the graveyard as stones flicked off the ground and crushed, dried-out weeds propelled into the air. Tiny steps that she had encountered once before—in Hartley. Was it Little Charlie?

Then another ominous sound. Children laughing and giggling while the faint sound of a circus tune played in the background. Da, da, da, da, da …

She immediately turned around to find four children, each one standing next to an unmarked grave.

One little girl, no more than ten years old, with a black ponytail, knee-high cotton socks, and a white frilled dress, played with her hula hoop. She swung it around in motion and with the equilibrium of an expert. She smiled as her, dark eyes with thick, black eyeliner resonating toward Clarisse.

Next to her was a young boy, no more than eight years old, playing hopscotch between two graves. His knee-length shorts, long socks, and blood-stained shirt, held up by suspenders, were ragged and worn out. He looked like he had been in a terrible accident and dragged across the ground, oblivious to any pain. While playing hopscotch, he balanced three small balls in the air like a juggler, quite a trick and well-coordinated.

Next to him was Little Charlie, sitting on a gravestone with his rope lassoed and legs crossed. He swung his lasso repeatedly and flung it toward an empty can as his target. He liked showing off his prowess to Clarisse, even though he couldn’t say any words, throwing his hands up in the air each time he conquered his target.

Another girl, albeit younger than the first, stood behind Little Charlie on an unmarked grave. She was wearing a crimson dress with frills and brown, country-style boots. Her dress was tainted red in parts from bloodstains, and her face was white as snow. It accentuated the eyeliner around her black eyes and sculptured face. She tilted her head slightly to the side as her red hair was tossed around in the slight breeze while holding a Raggedy Ann doll next to her face. She looked directly at Clarisse, smiling while caressing the doll.

The Raggedy Ann doll smiled one thoughtful expression, blinked its right eye two times rapidly, and then nodded before going back to its original posture.
