Nicholas thought about it. “Yeah, you know those Egyptians knew their stuff. They had spells written in that book that spelled out what they were to do in the afterlife. They even had the information on embalming bodies and stuff.” “Handling dead bodies would gross me out,” Quinn declared. “Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl.” Nicholas gave Quinn a strange look and glanced back at his arm. “Fascinating topic, but dude, we are about to go into a Magickal shop that I’m sure the owner dabbles in Hoodoo or that Voodoo crap, so let’s stop that talk about that Egyptians stuff, and let go of my arm while you at it.”

A week later, that Wednesday morning at nine thirty, Nicholas sat in the conference room at his office and looked over the reports. He was a study in contrasts as he sat their hiding his emotions. He’d learned over the years how to use people and today he was using the bastard Dante Channing.

Dante Channing had a nerdy arrogance that came from having been given the best education that money could buy. He was capable at doing his job, Nicholas knew, but he had weaknesses. Many of them, he thought, as he studied him suspiciously. One of them was that he loved to hear himself talk, another was thinking that he was smarter than everybody, and then there was his need to feel he was in control. But his greatest weakness, Nicholas knew, had to be Dante’s lost moral values. He would do anything to make money.

Dante passed out another report. “Everyone, Neon-Tech is a sure winner. And we have Nicholas La Cour to thank for doing the full financial check on Neon-Tech, and I must say it is now starting to show a very nice, albeit tiny, profit.”

Dante watched Nicholas for a moment and then walked over and nudged him whispering. “Nicholas are you paying attention? I just gave you a compliment.”

He put him on the spot.

Nicholas knew that he had been thinking about something else entirely. He’d been thinking about how glad he was that he had a programming background. He knew he’d done his homework when he’d set up a dummy corporation to do his siphoning. He needed to make some extra money the old-fashioned way, quickly, silently, and secretly.

Frustrated, Nicholas looked up at the other men in the conference room. He could tell they were glad Dante’s focus was on him and not on them. His smile was carefully crafted when he looked back at Dante. He shook his head. “You know I was just doing my job Dante, but thanks for the compliment,” he said with a sly smile, letting him know he’d heard every word he said.

Blame it on the drugs…

Ever since that night Cupcake had promised Allen, she’d help him, she regretted making him that promise. She’d also started to have a sense that something was basically wrong with Allen. She couldn’t believe he summoned her to meet him at this place.

A cloud of Chanel perfume floated on the air just as a woman walked up to Cupcake and placed her hand on her arm. “Welcome to my home,” she said, in a syrupy country drawl.

It took effort to conceal the shock of seeing Devine Corea. She was the daughter of a famous local sweet-talking criminal, Stanley Core, who was nicknamed “Stan, the main man,” her father had a reputation on the Southside of Chicago. The story went that her father had discovered that he had mistakenly sweet talked the fifteen-year-old virgin daughter of a brothel into bed with him? The girl had only been in the brothel to pick up the cash receipts. When she failed to bring them back to her father. He had sent out a searcher for her who had discovered the girl in bed with Stanley Corea. In that heated moment, Stanley was persuaded to marry Devine’s mother. Now standing in front of Cupcake was the offspring of that union.

Cupcake considered the woman standing in front of her. She knew her well. Devine was territorial. She ruled the Southside of Chicago when it came to gambling, prostitution and doing favors for powerful people. Devine was famous for the taking care of private matters. One thing about the women who worked for Devine. They were all considered a class act, and all were over eighteen. It was said you couldn’t work for Devine if you couldn’t produce your birth certificate to prove your age. Cupcake was glad she wasn’t into that career choice. Lap dancing and stripping but she wasn’t into selling her ass. She cleared her throat thankful for her career choices and said. “Hi Devine. I’m supposed to meet Allen here.”

Devine’s face lit up with an evil, conniving grin. “Yes, I know. When I heard, you were at the front door, I had to come greet you personally, Cupcake. I’d love to have you come dance for my guest, someday, soon.”

Devine’s house wasn’t a home, but a nightclub slashed drug-den, slashed house of prostitution. Anything you wanted could be brought there. If you had the money.

Everyone got swept away in the torrent of greed, lust and ruthless ambition. All except two ratchet lovers…

Another storm is coming, but the two ratchet lovers survive it? Find out in Jackson’s anticipated sequel, Lovers, Players The Seducer, Book II The Revenge Game. Winner takes all.

Sutter’s Bistro was located in the heart of downtown San Jose in an old two story brick building off of First Street and East Santa Clara. Kienan parked his Escalade in the public parking lot on the corner and walked a half block to the restaurant.

Downtown San Jose had changed since he was a kid, Kienan reflected as he paused at the corner of First Street and watched the light-rail train go by. It was one of the modern conveniences that made San Jose more and more like San Francisco every day.

He walked into Sutter’s Bistro and found Thomas was waiting for him.

Thomas smiled wide in greeting. “Hey Kienan my friend. It is good to see you.”

Kienan shook his hand. “Likewise, my old friend,” he said, taking the seat across from him. “Let’s order I’m starving.”

“I already have,” Thomas replied. “That is if you still like the house special.”

“If it is still braised short ribs? You know I do,” Kienan said, without hesitation.

“Good,” Thomas said, signaling their waiter.

Their waiter appeared with two piping hot plates of the house special short ribs, sauté green beans with garlic mashed potatoes.

“Looks like retirement agrees with you,” Kienan said, taking a bite of mashed potatoes.

“Yeah, it does. And I still remember the first time I ever saw you. It was the first day of the summer mentoring program for Future Detectives. Your father was with you on the first day. You still look like that hardworking geeky young man.”
