The aliens we thought were long gone are coming back.

Just his luck, alien-hybrid Ben Duncan is the only one for the job. Being an empath and a financial wizard, he’s called in to uncover an essential ally at a small regional bank in Vegas to thwart a plot his alien ancestors, the Akurns, seemed to have started there. If their heinous plans are successful, the global economy would crash and weaken mankind for their invasion in less than five short months. When Ben arrives at his assignment as a covert consultant, he meets the intriguing Julienne and is instantly alarmed at the intense attraction he has for her. He’d love to indulge in his obsession with the delectable woman, but knows he has no choice but to stay as far away from her as possible. The fate of billions don’t leave time for anything personal.

As senior vice-president, Julienne King leads a stressful life immersed in organizing a huge merger for a local bank in Vegas. And meeting some arrogant, hotter-than-hell, aloof outside consultant makes things worse. When she stumbles on an insidious money laundering scheme that threatens the global economy, she’s caught and kidnapped by one of her hateful bosses. While in captivity, she’s threatened with alien experimentation, death, or both. But what shocks her the most is it turns out she may not be who or what she thought she was.

Now it’s a race against time. Can a banker and an alien-hybrid overcome their misconceptions and to not only work together, but to realize their love is the key to mankind’s salvation?

Julienne took a step back to put some distance between them. It didn’t help.

Ben’s lips turned up at the ends but his well-built arms hung loose at his side. Now her mouth dried. This was the first time she’d seen him without a suit. His dark T-shirt molded lovingly to his taut frame. She gave herself a mental head slap and struggled to pull her gaze away from his chest. “What are you doing here?” She coughed. Damn frog in her throat was in the way.

The skin at the edge of his blue eyes crinkled before he strolled past without answering. He opened the door and poked his head out before leaving the small closet.

Dammit! She stomped her foot before following the exasperating man. She almost plowed into his back when he stopped.

He turned to face her. He was in the shadows and she couldn’t see his expression. When he said nothing, she put her fists on hips. “Excuse me, you didn’t answer my question. What are you doing here?”

“Apparently I’m saving your sweet self.” His smile widened. “And what, may I ask, are you doing here? Find anything interesting?”

Her nose rose a notch. “Yes, damn it!” She flung an arm to the wall that Bernie disappeared through. “What in the hell just happened? How did Bernie create a mirror that wasn’t there, walk through it and then vanish?”

“Are you sure that’s what you saw?”

She gritted her teeth as a slow, burning heat crept up her neck.

Keri’s latest SciFi Romance novel, ALIEN LEGACY: THE EMPATH, is the first in a five-book series of the Ancient Alien Descendants, taking the Ancient Alien motif and mixing it with a sensual, romantic twist.

A native Nevadan, Keri is a lifelong avid reader who lives in Northwestern Michigan with her hubby and the newest member of the family, a Jack Russell Terrier named Hestia. When not immersed in her made-up worlds, she enjoys discovering the fascinating landscape of her new home and pairing red wine with healthy ways to cook. As Good as Can Be by William Glass

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. William A. Glass will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

Initially, my intended audience for As Good As Can Be was family members. But as the work progressed, I realized that my novel would have to be vastly entertaining for anyone to read it. So, my intent became to make it a gripping narrative that any book lover would find hard to put down. If you enjoy becoming immersed in a story with characters you won’t easily forget, then read As Good As Can Be!

How did you come up with the title of your book?

The title is from a scene where the main character is visiting his terminally ill mother. He asks how she feels, and her answer is: “Oh, about as good as can be.”

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

AS GOOD AS CAN BE is about a military family that moves from one army base to the next during the 1950s and 60s. I looked up some station wagon ads from that era and pictures of old wooden army barracks. I gave those images to my publisher, Timber Hawkeye. He did the rest.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

Dave Knight is my favorite character. He’s the protagonist and a complex person with many faults who is not always easy to love. Still, the reader comes to admire Dave’s perseverance and good humor.

How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?

Most characters in my novel have both good and bad sides but not Captain Kinsey. He’s thoroughly evil and may be a sociopath.

If you could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be? Why?

As Good As Can Be is 410 pages long, and if I could shorten it without sacrificing anything important, I would. Despite its length, I’ve had many readers say that they were sad when they got to the end and wished there was more.

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series.

I’m a college soccer coach and most of As Good As Can Be was written on our team bus while traveling for away soccer matches.

What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike?

The Great Santini is similar to As Good As Can Be in that they are both autobiographical novels about dysfunctional military families. The main difference is that Pat Conroy was a great writer while I would consider myself to be merely a competent storyteller.

What's the strangest thing you have ever had to research online for your book?

The strangest thing I had to research online was for the episode in which Dave turns a box full of frogs loose in the high school library. I looked up synonyms for frogs and found vertebrates and amphibians.

Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?

I am a soccer nut. After volunteer coaching for several years and attending numerous coaching courses and seminars, I quit a perfectly good corporate VP job to coach soccer at a small college. Our team wins its share of games so I must have some talent for the job!

What can we expect from you in the future?

A sequel to As Good As Can Be will be coming out in the spring. It’s called: Knight’s Plutonian Shore.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

Great question! Many people have read As Good As Can Be and contacted me to rave about it, then never post a review anywhere. Because of the virus, I can’t do any in-person book tours, making online reviews even more important. The best places to post are Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. Reviews are the best way to help get the book noticed. Another way to help is to gift copies of the book to friends and family members! Please ask them to post a review.

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?

A tip for readers is to notice odd scenes in a book that seem superfluous. Authors don’t want their books to be any longer than necessary, so much of editing involves cutting. If a seemingly unnecessary scene is left in a book, it may be a clue to the subtext or a hidden theme.

For aspiring writers, my advice is to follow your passion!

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Thank you for featuring As Good As Can Be on It's Raining Books! I thoroughly enjoyed our interview.

Dave Knight is a wayward child growing up in a military family during the 1950s. His older sister wants to kill him but settles for regularly beating him up. Other siblings join in the mayhem while their alcoholic father contributes to the chaos with his unique approach to parenting.

As the Knight family moves from one army base to the next, Dave develops a give-a-damn attitude that often leads to trouble. In high school, he joins other delinquents in a series of escapades, some dangerous, others funny, and a few that would be worthy of jail time should they ever be caught.

After barely graduating, Dave is drafted into the army and sent to guard a nuclear weapons depot in Korea. There, he gets into trouble with his sergeant and tries to avoid dishonorable discharge.

The side door gang rushes up the stairs to the top floor then down the hall to where a crowd has gathered outside the library. Inside, girls are standing on tables screaming like it’s a Beatles concert. Several boys are chasing frogs. “There goes one,” someone yells.

“Coming through! Move! Get out of my way!” Mr. Danforth calls, rudely elbowing his way past. As the vice principal rushes into the library, a kid corners a frog and brings his heel down. There’s an explosion of blood and guts. “Stop that,” Danforth shouts, grabbing the misguided youth by the elbow. The disciplinarian searches his mind for another approach but is distracted by higher-pitched screaming. It seems that an unmentionable part of the squashed frog landed on the leg of one of the girls. Now she, and her friends, have redoubled their vocal efforts. They’re jumping up and down.

Danforth gazes toward heaven for a solution and through the open library window sees nothing but clear blue sky. Inspiration strikes. He looks down just as one of the little fellows hops by. Danforth grabs it, then hurls the vertebrate out of the window and into the pitiless void of oblivion.

Now that he has the hang of it, Danforth scampers around the library chasing frogs down and throwing them out. He’s like a man possessed, and soon the entrance stairs and pavement below bear gruesome testimony to his murderous efficiency. After the last vestiges of the amphibian menace have been ejected, the library begins to calm down, and the spectators disperse.

Blackhorse Road by Merida Johns

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Merida Johns will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Because of my background in women’s leadership development, there was no question that I wanted to write women’s fiction—stories about a woman protagonist’s journey toward a more fulfilled self.

About three years ago, I was on a conference call with fellow life coaches, and we were discussing concepts of what makes a fulfilling life. Bang! Like a thunderclap, I had an insight. What would it be like to help people understand the concepts of a flourishing life in a story instead of through a motivational book or text? After all, I thought, storytelling has been the most compelling form of communication for thousands of years. As far as I could recall, none of the great Profits fed up learning objectives and multiple-choice questions to their followers. No! They got their message across through stories.

As an academic (former professor) I was tired of writing motivational books and textbooks that give frameworks, theories, and ideas but don’t immerse readers in the human experience. Since I was ten years old, I had wanted to write fiction, but my professional career steered me in another direction. Now, I saw an opportunity to follow the dream I had had as a child. I feel that writing Blackhorse Road has been one of the most fulfilling things that I have accomplished.

What research is required?

When I started writing fiction, I took two pieces of advice to heart: write about what you know and know about what you write. Knowing about what you write means doing your research. A reader recently titled her review of Blackhorse Road on Amazon as “A well-researched novel,” and that review made my heart sing! A lot of research went into world-building, whether it was about eras such as the Irish immigration period to Canada, feminism from the 1860s through the 1930s, or the Great Depression to tracking down the history of inanimate objects such as the specific carousels, parks, forts, and amusement venues used as supporting characters or locations in the book. I’ve tried to make the context as authentic as possible, even researching the temperatures or moon phases for a given date mentioned in the story. Some of the most rewarding comments that I’ve received from readers is that the book brings back memories for them—whether it is a description of Southern California, Buffalo, Detroit, Lake Louise, or a dance with Air Force Academy cadets.

My favorite resources are first-hand accounts of an era that I uncover through reading diaries, journals, and old letters. Hearing the voices of people who lived in an era helps me bring a more descriptive and authentic context to my stories.

Readers interested can find a categorized on my website of many of the resources I used in my research.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

I have learned a lot about forgiveness from Luci Bartolini, the protagonist. Luci is betrayed by someone she should have been able to trust, and the betrayal left emotional scars and changed Luci’s life direction. Blackhorse Road is fundamentally a story about choices and their ramifications. After Luci discovers the betrayal, she has a choice: to be held hostage in a dark world of bitterness and hate or to free herself through forgiveness.

Forgiveness and mercy are not my top strengths! So, to write about forgiveness, I had to go beyond writing about what I know. I needed to know about what I wrote—and that meant doing a lot of research on what forgiveness is and what it is not. In the end, Luci taught me so much about forgiveness, and to give readers a hint, I’m happy to share the following quote from the book, modified a little to not give the story away. Hopefully, it will help others struggling with forgiveness too.

I keep asking myself, what is forgiveness? Forgiveness is not pardoning. It is not overlooking or justifying someone’s transgression and the hurt his actions caused. I am relieved that I don’t have to condone, excuse, reconcile, or even forget his behavior to forgive him. What is forgiveness . . . forgiveness is choosing to reject resentment and embrace compassion.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I must have music playing in the background. Since Blackhorse Road is primarily set in the mid-1960s, the music included artists such as the Four Seasons, Dick Dale, Everly Brothers, and folk music from Peter, Paul, and Mary, Gordon Lightfoot, Pete Seeger, New Christy Minstrels, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and so many more.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’d describe myself as an author who writes about what she knows, knows about what she writes, and fuses this with imagination and creativity.

Before I begin writing, I have a story in mind—I know the general character arc that shows the protagonist’s internal transformation. I’ve imagined the turning points, the character’s confrontation with her darkest moments, and the change by the end of the story that occurs. Then I get to work fleshing out the important secondary characters, including using inanimate objects and locations as supporting characters.

After I have the story in my mind, I write what I term a mini-story that includes a few paragraphs on the story’s theme(s) that sketches the plot, conflict, and resolution. Then I elaborate in the next section on the powerful influences/influencers in the story, followed by descriptions of the strong challengers, major conflict, and resolution.

The most useful technique that I use to develop the character is writing a character profile for each of the characters in the story. In this profile, I identify things like physical descriptions, home or neighborhood they live in, close relationships, family members and background, gender relationships, job, dress style, favorite foods, regrets, best qualities, worst qualities, religious and philosophical beliefs, and so on.

Afterward, I develop a short synopsis, as far as I can go, of each chapter. To be sure, though, nothing is set in stone. My characters and events evolve, and each day as I write about these, the characters take me off guard by their actions and thoughts, and I am surprised by unexpected events that surface without notice!

For tracking characters and events, I develop a timeline and a list of characters and their relationship(s) with each other. Both of these will have additions and are edited throughout the development of the novel.

I maintain a style sheet while I’m working on my novels. Style sheets are usually used by copyeditors, but I have found this tool essential in keeping track of style and usage for my own purposes. For example, I will list words that I always hyphenate or capitalize, notate how I treat inner thoughts by using italics, not quotations, and so on. The style sheet also lists all references I have used for fact-checking and fact-finding. When I hand the manuscript to the copyeditor, the style sheet functions as a communication tool between the two of us, making life so much easier for both.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

As I mentioned earlier, I love old letters, journals, and diaries. Here’s what’s sitting to my right now, just crying out to be read:

• A journal from 1891. This journal begins with a listing of books that this teenaged girl had read: The Virginia Heiress, A Life’s Remorse, Knight Errant, and several others.

• A journal from 1892. This journal begins with the entry: Practiced Mrs. Willis’ for 1-1/2 hours for St. Patrick’s concert.

• A journal from 1896. This journal starts with an entry from a young woman teacher on her first day of teaching. She says, “Began my 1st day of teaching. Mr. Pillon, the trustee, was at school finishing some of the desks. I hated to start this morning . . .

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Three exciting things are coming up for me.

• First, I am working on a women’s fiction novel tentatively titled Parallel Lives that begins in Columbus, Ohio, in the mid-1970s. Suzanna has her whole life in front of her like an open freeway or so she believes . . . The story is packed with challenges and hard decisions as Suzanna strives to follow her North Star. Like Blackhorse Road, the ending has a surprising twist—this one, though, might raise the reader’s curiosity enough to wonder if coincidences that edge on the paranormal might be real might be more than random events. Stay tuned!

• Second, I’m planning on a series of fireside chats during the Winter months about Blackhorse Road’s development and exploring questions that my readers have about the story. So, I can’t wait to get these launched beginning in January 2021.

• Third, I’m launching a newsletter that will focus on what happens behind the scenes in developing a piece of fiction. Readers and other authors have so many questions, and I’d love to share my experiences with them.

Readers can find out more about the fireside chats and sign up for my newsletter.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Yes, I do! Do you prefer a story written in the present tense or past tense? Blackhorse Road contains both, although the bulk of the story is written in the past tense. In my upcoming work, I’m debating whether to reverse the emphasis and use the present tense for most of the story. What do your readers prefer?

Under another hand, Blackhorse Road could all too easily have been a singular romance. Johns provides more as she follows Luci down the rabbit hole and out the other side of life experience, bringing readers into a world where . . . transgression changes everything and challenges carefully-constructed foundations of belief and values. As Luci lets go of her lifesavers and navigates obstacles to happiness, her story becomes a vivid portrait of hope and self-examination which ultimately moves into unexpected territory. Novel readers seeking a tale that closely considers deception and forgiveness, love gained and lost, and family ties will welcome the multifaceted Blackhorse Road's ability to come full circle in a satisfyingly unexpected way. - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

It’s the turbulent mid-1960s, and Luci, an eighteen-year-old Southern California girl, is on the quest for self-determination and new beginnings. Three powerful forces influence her values: the grit of her Irish great-grandmother, Lucinda McCormick; the philosophy of choice of her father, Sam; and the 1960s ideals of equity and altruism. But potent foes thwart Luci at every turn. Her budding romance with a handsome United States Air Force Academy cadet sets the stage for conflict and deception that last for two decades. When Luci discovers how her autonomy and love affair were hijacked, she struggles with anger and bitterness. But from a surprising source, she finds a forgiveness path that restores her well-being and hope and, in the end, faith in herself.

Monday, July 18, 1966 – Buffalo, NY

Dear Luci with an i,

Here I am at 2:00 a.m., a lonely lover whose sole comfort comes from the cherished memories we made together a few hours ago. My desk is a witness to the completion of many term papers and homework assignments, but it has never been my partner in a confession of love. Can words convey the depth of my thoughts, rampant emotions, and gratitude to you? I’m uncertain they exist, and if they did, it’s unclear that I could assemble them to explain how you have captured my heart and what you mean to me.

I’m no John Keats or Robert Browning, but my feelings are no less potent than their descriptions of love. Being “in love” is a passion like the flames of a blistering fire that race across the prairie. It’s fierce and red, self-serving, and out of control. It feeds upon itself until there is nothing left. “To love,” though, is a passion like the embers of a flickering fire that lingers within the hearth. It’s gentle and glowing, crackles with surprise, and permeates the senses. It’s warm and steady. It rekindles itself, and it endures.

With you, Luci, being “in love,” is inadequate for me. No, I love you. You unexpectedly and beautifully transformed my life the evening you entered it. Because of you, my world flourishes in joy, compassion, amusement, serenity, and awe. I feel, for the first time, that I am entirely immersed in the bounty of life. I would be lost and hollow without you. You’ve made me complete. I can face any hurdle and accomplish anything with you beside me. Our time is just beginning, Luci, as we walk across the stepping-stones of life together.

For all of this and more, I seal my love with gratitude for our memory making. I send you a cascade of Bois Blanc Island kisses, placing each one where I know it will please you the most.

Barry

About the Author:
For three decades, I was a university professor who taught classes and wrote textbooks on “nerdy” subjects centering on computer systems in healthcare.

But a decade ago, informed by my experience in a male-dominated area, I started my practice as a leadership coach to help women break the glass ceiling and fulfill their leadership and economic potential. Consequently, during the past ten years, I transitioned from writing textbooks to motivational books on creating environments where people flourish through better leadership.

About a year ago, I was on a conference call discussing concepts of what makes a fulfilling life with fellow life coaches. Bang! Like a thunderclap, I had an insight. What would it be like to help people understand the concepts of a flourishing life in a story instead of through a motivational book or text? After all, I thought, storytelling has been the most compelling form of communication for thousands of years. As far as I could recall, none of the great prophets fed up learning objectives and multiple-choice questions to their followers. No! They got their message across through stories.

Motivational books and textbooks give frameworks, theories, and ideas, but they don’t immerse us in the human experience. They don’t show us how others face challenges, embrace their passions, overcome sorrow, celebrate achievement, quash self-doubts, develop positive emotions and relationships, handle betrayal, or act on aspirations.

Storytelling ignites our imagination and emotion. We experience being part of the story rather than being served up a platter of facts, exercises, and information.

This eye-opener was enough for me to take on the challenge of novel writing. My passion is to help people catapult beyond concepts and theories and jump into the wonderment of imagination in designing a flourishing life for themselves. Storytelling does this best.

Happily, as a fiction writer, I have jettisoned learning objectives and test questions. Ah…the freedom makes me feel as light as a balloon on a summer breeze.

All Bags Go to Cleveland by C.S. Hale

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. A randomly drawn winner will receive a $50 Amazon/BN GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Any weird things you do when you’re alone?

Depends on who you ask. Writers would nod their heads and go, “I do that all the time.” I stay in my jammies unless I need to leave the house. I talk to myself. Um, other than that I think I do what most people do - watch TV, have a beverage or two.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Albus Dumbledore

I love this quote because it talks about courage and showing our heart. It doesn’t matter if you are as talented or as skilled as someone else. They may be letting their talent go to waste while you are pushing yourself ahead. It’s the scolding I would have expected the Hare to get in the story of The Tortoise and the Hare.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Can I take two authors to a desert isle?

In a way this is apros pro as my eldest son stopped by this summer, wanting to borrow the Harry Potter series. I may have given him all of them but Prisoner of Azkaban because I only had one copy and would have mourned its loss if it was never returned, and I may have lied to him about not finding it…

But if I could take just one author, I would take Katherine Kurtz. No other author has made such a huge impact on my life - who I am, my world view. I even named my oldest after two of her characters. I found her Deryni series just after I started Junior High. She had created a new genre, blending fantasy and history. I identified with the Deryni who were different (though I didn’t have their magic) and were persecuted, hiding who they truly were. The quote I almost went with was one of hers, “Humans kill what they do not understand.” I feel like Kurtz took who I was and spread it across page after page and not just with the 16 book Deryni collection. Pieces of me showed up in the Adept series and other books of hers, as well. Isn’t that why we enjoy the authors we do? We see ourselves, the pieces hidden and denied, in the pages of the book.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

The most important, and most difficult to achieve, is the ability for the author to be invisible. The reader gets lost in the book and isn’t even conscious of turning the page. They are shocked when they look down and see that they’ve read a hundred pages or it’s now 1:30am and they were going to stop at 11pm. I had that happen to me with Stephanie Meyer’s The Host. I loved what she had done, how she had created such intense emotion in one scene, and I got it out to study it so I could try to do something similar in the scene I was writing. I was shocked when I stopped reading because instead of just that one scene, those three or four pages, I’d gone 100 pages beyond it. It’s the lucky author that can get everything perfect when they first start writing. You can learn all the rules but figuring out how and when to apply them is tricky. I needed more deep POV in Cleveland, where the character’s thoughts and impressions are on the page almost as if they are writing the story. My critique partner Bethany is a master at it, so I asked her what she does, how she approaches it, and she answered, “I just sink myself into the character and write what they are experiencing.”

But it’s not as easy as that. I picked a couple of paranormal rom com to read while I was working on Cleveland and there was so much deep POV, so many comments from the protagonist, in one that it interrupted my own reactions. I’d have to stop reading so I could finish my thought. Good writing knows when to add in that character response to deepen yours and when to keep silent because they already know what you will be thinking there.

Where did you get the idea for this book?

Cleveland was born at a writer’s conference where I was seated next to agent Andrea Brown’s husband. We had been talking travel and he asked, “Why is it that when your luggage is misdirected, it always goes to Cleveland? Why do all bags go to Cleveland?” I remember exactly where I was - driving in a roundabout - three days later when the answer hit me like a clap of thunder - gremlins. But in this case it was a blond bombshell of a gremlin who no one would suspect and she hated her powers.

Angela Grimalke appears more blonde bombshell than the gremlin she is. But there is no denying her supernatural truth after her clumsiness gets her fired from her modeling career. Forced to work for her family’s upscale airline, she spends her days slinging luggage and wishing her parents would get off her back about finding a nice gremlin guy to settle down with.

Relationships were the last thing on her mind, not that her family would accept that.

For Dave Ford his frequent business travel made it next to impossible for him to find a woman who could tolerate his chaotic schedule. Which is why he appreciates Angela. Neither of them are looking for love, but Dave feeds Angela's addiction for chocolate while she provides him with the chaos to keep him on his toes.

However, as Angela’s parents bombard her with a parade of "eligible" gremlin men at their weekly family dinners, she finds herself torn between who she longs to be and her family’s expectations. Will she give in and live the life of magic they want for her? Or risk it all by to confessing to Dave that she isn’t human?

“You owe me.”

Angela glanced up from her computer screen. Dave Ford stood in front of her. The blood drained from her face. “Do I?” She raised her “helpful” smile.

“Yes.” Dave handed over his passport and put the Louis Vuitton garment bag on the scale. “Last time, you sent my bag to Cleveland.”

“The system isn’t perfect,” Angela said, punching Dave’s information into the computer. “Things do happen sometimes.”

“You control the system. I think you owe me a glass of wine for having to find a tailor at six a.m. I had a nine o’clock business meeting and just my jeans and sweatshirt.”

“Hmm. By that reckoning, I think I’d owe the tailor for having to get you a functional suit so quickly at that early hour.”

“I tipped him £100. Least you can do is buy me a glass of wine in return.”

Angela lifted her gaze. Dave—all six feet of him with his fabulous hair— had a hopeful expression on his face.

“I’m not in the habit of buying strange men alcohol.”

Dave stuck his hand out. “Hi. Dave Ford. Business traveler.” Angela laughed. “All I’m asking for is a glass of Malbec. Or maybe pinot noir. Small price to pay in comparison to my having to fight off jet lag via acupuncture.”

“Acupuncture?”

Dave shrugged. “It was early for the tailor. His aim wasn’t quite what it could have been.”

Angela dipped into Dave’s mind. The tailor had stabbed him a couple of times. And Dave was playing with her. He wanted to see what she’d do.

Christmas Comes to Dickens by Maddie James and other authors

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The authors will be awarding a $30 Gift Card (of choice), and a free book from each of the ten authors. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Sometimes all we need is to believe.

Ariana Angelo’s blog specializes in “all things Christmas, all year long.” While traveling New England searching for the perfect Christmas village, she lands in Dickens amid the town’s Christmas festivities. She’s delighted and giddy with holiday cheer and a can literally feel the magic of the season in her bones.

Matt Matthews, owner of the century-old Dicken’s Hardware, despite all the Christmastime holiday hoopla, dislikes the season. He’s all about regular business—not a holiday ornament or tree trimming bauble to be found in his store. The holiday triggers unwanted memories, so he avoids the festivities—and the people—as much as possible.

Until one incredibly insistent tourist refuses to accept that he doesn’t believe….

Taking her hand had been bold of him—and to be honest, it was such an impulsive act that had he thought about it, he wouldn’t have.

But he was glad he did.

It had been a long time since he’d held any woman’s hand, and the feel of Ariana’s small, soft hand in his was nice. Very nice. In fact, holding her hand was pleasant enough that he slowed his steps as they approached the landing to the attic, and was semi-reluctant to let go when they got there.

But just as quickly as he’d grabbed it, he let go.

The attic door creaked as he pushed it open. Moving past the threshold, he yanked an overhead pull string and light flooded the area. But before he could move farther inward, Ariana grasped his arm and stopped him.

“Matt?”

“Hm?”

“What was going on with Aimee? Seemed like more than a bad dream.”

He perused Ariana’s face. Her expression appeared full of concern and worry for his niece, and that touched his heart. Who was this woman who had suddenly burst into their lives? Someone who had him in the attic looking for Christmas decorations and felt genuine concern for his family?

January, 2022: A dark monstrous twin-headed apparition – Apophis – feverishly races past the expanse of the Milky Way galaxy and bolts to the edge of the solar system. Recklessly accelerating, the sinister rock-dyad enters the gravitational keyhole of the blue planet and continues its resolute inebriated journey – to soon arrive with an apocalyptic impact on Earth.

December, 2012: Five sentient beings born in different cities – New York, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Azores Islands and Istanbul, discover amongst haunting memories of their phantasmal past lives, that it is their destiny to save humanity from the evil forces unleashed by the alien fiends – the Skyllats.

And now, the reincarnated 9-year-olds must rely on their shared, ancient wisdom to prepare humanity for the war across the galaxy that is imminent.

A Note from the Author:

Writing Apophis over these past five years, has been a cathartic inner-journey that rippled across my life. It extracted all of my patience, diligence and life-learnings of my past 52 years lived on this orphic blue bubble, as it floats across a conscious Universe.

Now its journey complete, it was launched a few days ago on several platforms across the world. And I am left exhausted, numbed and humbled by this Initiation.

I acknowledge that it is a book that I have NOT written, for it was willed from me – by the Universe. And now, it is like a child set free – floating away – ready to choose its own path, life-journey and future.

Where it goes from here?

It is for the Universe to decide.

I did, what was willed of me to do…

All I can promise the reader is a book imbued with a magical wisdom. A restlessly paced story that transports you across time, teamed up with five children along their phantasmal, breathtaking journeys.

These 9-year-olds the reincarnations of ancient philosophers, including Confucius, Plato, Buddha, Ptah Hotep and a mysterious another.

Happy Reading!

“Peter, what is their present position?” the 1.7-meter-tall Claire with a sharp nose and radiant blue eyes inquired, “Quelque chose d’autre a signaler – do you have anything else to report?” She adjusted her glasses, pushing back her long brown hair.

“Herodotus has crossed into the belt, and is travelling at a speed of 346,000 kilometers per hour,” Peter replied, seated next to the astrophysicist, “I am amazed, Claire, how well the mission has progressed so far.”

Their Command and Control Centre located in a narrow peninsula, beyond Mount Yahazudake on Yakushima Island was housed several floors below an old island home that camouflaged its true purpose.

“You really doubted them? Incroyable!” smiled Claire, when she was interrupted by her secretary with an urgent message.

“It is my job to question and doubt,” grinned Peter and turned around. But Claire had already stepped into a high-speed elevator, climbing seven levels up.

A stoic Colonel Yoshimoto dressed in a dark gray suit and a black tie, stood inside a glass partitioned conference room, studying a large photograph of a Mongolian shaman staring ardently at the moon. The rustic house with rice paper screen walls or shoji, that separated the inner office from the outer living area, was capped with a gray shingled sloping roof supported by polished wooden trusses.

Colonel Yoshimoto bowed when Claire entered and addressed him, “How are you, Koki San? I don’t believe we had a meeting scheduled. In fact, I was about to leave for a connecting flight to New York from Kagoshima.”

“We are aware of your flight to New York, Claire San.” Colonel Yoshimoto spoke apprehensively. “So, I shall be brief. About two days ago we received an unexpected signal from the Sentinel Observatory. We have modelled it several times and have arrived at conclusions…that we frankly find deeply disturbing.”

Life With Ollie by Donna Bourgeois

If you are of dating age or married, I wrote this book for you.

This is not a self-help or a how-to book. This is the story of the metamorphosis of a timid, fear filled child who finally blossomed into a warrior. I have many scars that no one can see, but they are healed now. Through these battles to become a warrior, I have helped the wounded souls that have come to me and seen them overcome their demons to stand tall and proud of who they are. It has brought me great joy.

Through the years, I have heard along the way that the ancient Chinese would fix their broken china cups or figurines with gold to make them whole again, and more valuable. I believe that humans can be repaired with love and a sense of self-worth. Each and every one of us are here for a purpose and we are given gifts to help fulfill our purpose.

I would love for you to come on this journey with me.

Things were steadily sliding downhill, relationship-wise. I told my husband one night that I was sure Grant was using drugs. Things had started disappearing from the house and turning up in a pawn shop when we went looking for them. I also told him that I felt alone in the marriage and asked if we could go see a counsellor. His reply was “I am perfectly happy; it must be you who has the problem.” If police came to the door, he would run downstairs and turn on the TV, and I would have to deal with them. One time, a big limo pulled up to the house and down he ran again, leaving me to settle the matter. Even John’s father told him if he didn’t step up to the plate, I was going to have a breakdown or leave him. But he just continued on like he always had: Tra-la-la-la-la. I received a big promotion at work and I was so proud. My husband’s first words? “How much of a raise did you get?”

I was devastated, no congratulations whatsoever. This new job became very demanding and I had to do a lot of overtime. I was exhausted. I came home one night at ten-thirty and was asked, “What’s for supper?” That was when I lost it. I hired Molly Maid for my housework and was lucky enough to get them on a Friday morning, so when I came home my house was spotless. I told my husband he could do the groceries and cook the meals. Plus, everyone could do their own laundry.

Oh, happy day! I could finally rest on the weekends.

One weekend, my aunt Mary and her family came to Whitby. We partied Saturday and had a grand time. When I was going to bed, my son’s radio was blasting. He was asleep, so I went into his room to turn it down and found two vials of hash oil on his nightstand. I went to our room and told my husband, “You won’t believe me that Grant is doing drugs? Go into his room—they’re right there in full sight.” His answer was “Why do you want to start trouble with a houseful of people here? Leave it alone.” I told him, “Fine, but when I get home from work on Monday, YOU had better have dealt with it because I’m tired of taking him to every specialist I can find alone. If you love him at all, you try and save him.” I was just too exhausted to go on being the only parent.

When I arrived home on Monday, I asked him if he had talked to Grant. His reply was “I have no proof that he is using drugs.” I told him that whatever was left of this marriage, he had just killed it and I was leaving him. His reaction was to call my son and tell him “Your mother is leaving. Pick who you want to live with.” Of course, Grant was devastated from being told in such a heartless way. He decided he would stay with his dad. Well, that was okay. He was free to do what he wanted, no questions asked.

I packed up all my clothes and left.

Boris was now close to the front of the line. He took a deep breath to calm himself. He was totally isolated from the team. With the destruction of the communicator, he had no way to confirm if he should continue with the filing. If he guessed wrong and made a duplicate filing, he'd instigate an Imperial Hold on Studly's Case and everything would be lost.

Up on the screen, the picture had suddenly switched to another very chaotic scene. Boris was stunned as he watched Jesse being led away in handcuffs by Imperial Police. She'd been arrested at another Imperial Court Filing Center, one that was closer to Dennet Prime. In addition to multiple filings, Otto had planned for multiple filing locations to increase the favorable odds as much as possible.

But had she succeeded in making the Filing? Boris couldn't tell from the view on the screen. One of the policemen marching behind Jesse had the Dennet Prime courier bag slung over his shoulder. It was impossible to tell if the bag was filled or empty. It was designed to maintain its shape regardless of the contents; another security precaution to prevent casual observers being able to discern if the bag actually had anything inside.

Boris was torn by indecision. All the remaining members of the team had been neutralized. He was the only one left. Should he go through with the filing? Had Jesse been successful? They'd shown her being arrested in the Filing Center but was it before or after?

He was agonizing over the decision, when he realized he'd reached the front of the line. He was next! This was it!

"Next, please!"

After a rousing “Trick or Treat,” Matthew got some sticky taffy. He plunked it into the pumpkin-shaped plastic bag. He’d also put a second sack on my back, in case he ran out of room. We expected to knock on a lot of homes.

Peter marched up to the front door. He flew the pumpkin-head drone ahead of him. It had a small net hanging from it. Peter reached the lady giving out the candy. He drove the drone in front of the candy bowl in her hands and declared, “Trick or treat!”

“What?” Matthew muttered at my side. “He got two pieces.”

As he walked back toward us, Peter smirked. “Guess who’s going to win?”

“You cheater,” Matthew said.

I nodded in agreement.

“It’s not cheating if I’m just smarter,” Peter said.

The Duty Bound Duet by Syndey Jamesson

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

DUTY OF CARE:

On her death bed Emily Derbyshire’s mother made her promise to take good care of her little sister. Keeping her promise, twelve-year-old Emily did exactly that and became five-year-old Rita’s benefactor and bodyguard.

After eighteen years of sisterly devotion Emily receives some shocking news! Rita has committed suicide. When disturbing details start to surface, Emily puts her highflying career on hold to seek out those responsible. She hires an American private investigator Robert Blackmoor; a motorbike riding, no-frills, computer hacker who will use any means necessary to unearth the truth.

Not surprisingly, Robert uncovers secrets from Emily’s troubled childhood and chips away at the glossy veneer of deceit which masks the truth behind, not only Rita’s life, but Emily’s imperfect life too.

Together they assemble the pieces of a sinister puzzle, revealing a cruel and corrupt world of exploitation and murder: a Dark Web into which Rita has become entangled.

As dark forces encircling Emily tighten their grip, and with everything to lose, she must make a life and death decision that she may live to regret.

THE CARETAKERS

Emily Parsons is a product of a difficult childhood: self-reliant, fiercely protective and willing to do whatever it takes to safeguard the wellbeing of those in her care. She has even slayed a monster, or two … or three in the name of poetic justice, and yet she is haunted by the image of a beautiful blond girl.

Sixteen-year-old Louise Travis has been abducted.

Louise’ fate rested in Emily’s hands, but she let her slip through her fingers like gold dust, only to be swept away by a malevolent band of brothers.

By once again enlisting the help of computer hacker, Robert Blackmoor, Emily must find Louise before she is lost forever in a Dark Web of heinous crimes, cruelty and corruption. The clock is ticking, and Emily’s investigation is drawing the wrong kind of attention, but she will not back down. She is duty bound to protect those she loves.

With skeletons from her past being unearthed, who can she turn to, and who can she trust with her own sinister secrets?

Read an Excerpt from DUTY OF CARE

“The whole world can become the enemy when you lose what you love.” Kristina McMorrris.

I STOOD ALONE in the graveyard the day they buried my sister. There I was, Emily Parsons, the hapless figure lurking behind a gnarled oak tree—an unwelcome guest.

A savage January wind gnawed at my cheeks. It made my eyes sting; eyes already brimming with salty residue left over from a night spent sobbing into a pillow. Sapped of all strength, I leaned against the trunk, held it between my hands; gloved fingers tracing rough edges. I breathed in its wild, woody perfume; rotting branches, unclaimed timber—a steadfast pillar of support in a surreal tableau.

At our parents’ request, I didn’t show my face. Did they fear I’d cause a scene, throw myself onto the coffin?

Who knows?

Who cares?

With or without their blessing, I had to go. I had to be there to witness my little sister’s departure from this mortal coil and, if that meant enduring sniveling platitudes caught on the wind—so be it.

Our parents, family members and some of Rita’s friends circled the cavernous hole in the ground like ravens; a flock of silhouettes set against a snowy backdrop. My watery eyes lingered on the word Rita formed in purple violas on the wreath—a tiny name for someone with a big personality and an even bigger heart.

Having endured the lamentations of the priest marking the passing of a life ended much too soon, I absconded. I sprinted like a bandit between gravestones, my feet slipping on ankle deep snow that shrouded everything, creating a clean, sterile landscape. Nothing seemed out of place. Nothing except my sister’s charred body lying six foot under in a mahogany coffin fifty yards away.

I took refuge in my car and sat in silence, refusing to acknowledge the shifting congregation. Concealed behind windows veiled with condensation, I left unseen.

In those days leading up to Rita’s funeral, I cried nonstop. I would wake from dozing and the world would be as it was. I would smile through cracked lips, but then I would remember and my heart would ache and my body would shake and tears would cloud my eyes once more.

The myriad of memories we had made were my only lifeline: phone conversations, photographs and texts existing in a vacuum, authorless—a cruel kind of comfort. For the sake of my sanity, I tried to come to terms with her passing, I really did, but the realisation that the one person I loved more than any other had gone and left me behind did not make any sense to me.

We had made a pact when we were kids to never be separated.

Why had Rita broken it?
