In her debut novel, Lisa Dianne McInnes urges us to explore the meaning of loss, the evil side of human nature, and the infinite power of love and rising above it all.

Between the years 2012 and 2017, like a pile of dominos, Lisa Dianne McInnes watched her life collapse as one traumatic tragedy after another took away her loved ones, leaving her to learn just how quickly life can fall apart.

An extraordinary memoir full of depth, compassion, and unimaginable strength, The Majewski Curse is the harrowing true story of the separate yet intertwined tragedies of Brandon, Devon, and Derek Majewski's deaths and the multiple conspiracies surrounding their family's search for truth.

The triggers of memories and reminders were everywhere. This quaint little bungalow that started as a bustling home full of joy now seemed quiet and eerie. At night, the front door would be a reminder of the flashing police lights outside, and when the kitchen phone lit up and rang, it would remind me of Richard’s repeated phone calls, not to mention that walking downstairs to say goodnight to Christopher would cause my chest to pound because I couldn’t help but look inside Devon’s room and visualize his body lying there.

I would silently pray that we would start over again somewhere new, a place where we didn’t see Brandon and Devon’s faces around every corner and a place where no one knew our sad story or our names. The peaceful little town of Innisfil did not feel like home anymore.

Sometimes, I would stand in Devon’s room after he died or sit on his bed, willing him to show himself to me. The spiritual side of me wanted to know if there were such things as ghosts and if Devon could, he would appear. After all, he had died right there in his room.

Derek had raised both Devon and Brandon as non-believers. Devon always spoke of his mother being a non-believer, and Derek had been raised Catholic, but he decided to become a non-believer after experiencing several tragedies throughout his life. He no longer believed in God and would often say that He was cruel if He did exist. Therefore, I always told the boys to think for themselves and not let their parents’ ideas or opinions influence their decision to be spiritual. I explained that personal experiences and upbringing shaped their parents’ beliefs. Therefore, they needed to search inside themselves for what they believed in and which views gave them peace.

Movies and literature always suggest that when someone passes away, the house they died in becomes haunted. In my heart, I wanted so much for that to be true. The idea of a ghost is not scary if that ghost belongs to someone you love.

I would spend hours just thinking about Devon, anxiously looking for any clue of his presence. One late night, while standing in the kitchen by the window that faced the backyard, I felt a cold gust of wind come from behind me. In that instant, I knew something felt different. The breeze came out of nowhere. There were no vents nearby, but the cold air kept coming, breathing down my neck. At the same time, I felt warm and comforted. Hot tears flowing like lava down my face and in my heart, I hoped it was Devon or Brandon, or perhaps both. I had never felt anything like it before and never felt it again since, but that little sign was what I needed.

It was at this point I began to reflect on Deepak Chopra’s Life after Death. When I had first read it, I found it interesting on many levels, but the theories never resonated with me until now. Chopra says there is abundant evidence of “the world beyond” and that death brings us through a door to another level of consciousness. Far more importantly, he states that who you meet in the afterlife and what you experience there will reflect your present beliefs, expectations, and level of awareness.

About the Author:
Lisa Dianne McInnes has always been fascinated with spirituality and the human experience. She prides herself on always being committed to the truth, even when it hurts, and believes in being reliable, trustworthy, honest, and loyal to those she loves.

However, in 2012, when tragedy struck and shattered her family, Lisa's beliefs were tested and she was forced to undergo a profound inner transformation. In doing so, she had to acknowledge the trauma of her past but chose only to remember the love her family shared. Her solid understanding and belief in the theory of mindfulness and living in the moment helped her rise from the ashes and move on with her life. She believes the past can be like a black hole: if you stand too close it will pull you in.

Today, small things like sunsets, staring out at the water, and kisses for no reason are the reasons she smiles. She believes it is the simple memories that define us, and the ones we hold close to our hearts. For Lisa, writing allows her to share her struggles and experiences with others, and by doing so she learns and grows both mentally and spiritually through the process. Therefore, with her work, she hopes to inspire her readers to join her on the journey to find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives.

Lisa completed her debut novel, The Majewski Curse, and is currently preparing to start writing her second non-fiction work. She currently resides in Northern Ontario with her spouse and their puppy Cooper.
