Rose Strickland is having a blue Christmas. Her friend is arrested for attempted murder, her sexy bad guy crush is marked by a hit man, and her boss is locked in an epic smackdown with a rival diner. Determined to save those she loves, Rose embarks on an investigation more tangled than a box of last year's tree lights. With her eclectic gang at the ready, Rose stumbles across dead bodies, ex-cons, chop shops, jealous girlfriends, jilted lovers, and a gaggle of strippers in a battle for freedom she might not survive.

Gone was the flirtatious, smooth ladies’ man, and in its place was a businessman who sized me up as a potential customer. “Maybe. What type of car you looking for?”

“One that won’t get me pulled over for grand theft auto.”

He stroked his jaw. “How much you want to pay?”

“A couple hundred.”

He started laughing hysterically. “Shit, Rose. You’re funny.” Tears filled his eyes. “A couple hundred.”

I waited until he sobered a bit. “What can you tell me about Asshat? And what’s his real name anyway?”

He wiped his eyes. “Sheik.”

I blinked. “Sheik? Sheik Johnson? Really? Who else would want to bash him on the head besides Janelle?”

“How about all his women? All his friends? All his family? Pretty much anyone who’s ever met the dude.”

Asshat sounded like a real charmer. “What do you mean ‘all his women?’ I thought he only dated Chicken Licker.” She of the infamous eating-a-drumstick-while-getting-it-on-in-Janelle’s-bed incident.

Roxy popped her gum. “I thought he was dating someone named Flat Ass for a while.”

Janelle was going to have to start using real names instead of physical descriptions.

“Yeah, he fu…dates a lot. He was living with Chicken Licker for a while. But she kicked his ass to the curb.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Hell if I know,” Tariq said.

I dug a pen and small note pad from my purse. “Okay, Tariq, names please. Let’s start with Chicken Licker.”

“Destiny Lee. She works at The Bottom Dollar off South Birchwood. Asshat dates a lot of strippers.”

Terri L. Austin lives in Missouri with her funny, handsome husband and a high maintenance peekapoo. She’s the author of Diners, Dives and Dead Ends—a Rose Strickland Mystery.

“Austin’s debut kicks off her planned series by introducing a quirky, feisty heroine and a great supporting cast of characters and putting them through quite a number of interesting twists.” Kirkus Reviews

Tasting Fire by Shelly Holt - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

Today we're welcoming author Shelly Holt to the blog on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for her paranormal romance, "Tasting Fire".

Shelly is giving away a $20 Starbucks GC to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so comment today AND follow her tour (if you click on the banner above, it'll take you to a list of his tour stops)! The more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win a GC!

Shelly was gracious enough to answer all our prying questions.  Thanks, Shelly!

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I love mythology and folklore and felt I could use that to enhance a shape-shifter story. The genre also meshed well with my personal writing style and sense of imagination. I basically wrote the book I had been wanting to read.

What research is required?

For my books a great deal. Since I chose to focus on the mythology of shape-shifters in cultures around the world, I first had learn about them. I spent a week researching Himalayan cultures and folklore until I found something I could use and build from. I read about the myth of the Pari which are seductive female mountain spirits that if angered can shift into the form of a snow leopard and attack. I drew up a plot that revolved around the hypothesis that if the Pari were real, how did they come to exist? I researched methods of bacterial transmission and eventually came up with the idea that if shape-shifters throughout history were caused by an infection, it would have to be difficult to catch, otherwise everybody and their grandmother would be a shape-shifter. That was how I decided to make the infection come from a thermophilic (heat loving) bacteria that only lives in hot springs around the world. You can't catch it from another shape-shifter, but you can inherit the condition from your parents. This method of transmission gives rise to the many different mythologies of shape-shifters that have evolved from every culture on the planet. As Dr. Rae Hales, my heroine surmises “if the Pari are real, doesn't that mean they could all be real?”

Name one thing you learned from your protagonist.

Learn to let go. I learned this from Nawang Wangdo and Kai Tenzin. I personally have some control issues (not of other people, but of my own life.) I gave them to several of my characters as well to make them more fully rounded three dimensional characters. It was actually quite therapeutic to write the book where these characters learned to let go and to truly understand that what will be, will be!

Any odd or interesting writing quirks, habit or superstitions?

Before I started writing Tasting Fire, I watched all my Russell Wong movies again. He was the physical model for the character of Kai Tenzin. Is that weird enough?

Plotter or pantser?

I'm a plotter. I have to have an outline, I may diverge from it during the course of the writing, but I can't write from nothing. My books are also heavy on mythology and folklore, so I have a ton of research that I do beforehand.

Look to your right? What's sitting there?

My T.V. and beyond that in the hallway is an oil painting I did of my grandparents from a snapshot taken in the 1940s. My grandfather was a professional magician and in the painting my grandmother has some sort of guillotine device around her neck. I believe he used to have a blade that went through the device. Well, Grandma is 96 years old now, so he obviously knew how to work the trick correctly.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Yes, I've start writing the second book in the Tasting Fire series. It revolves around the Naga, an ancient race of snake kings and warriors that were and still are worshiped in parts of India. Many families in India still claim descent from the Nagas. The story will take place about thirty years after the events in Tasting Fire.

Do you have a question for our readers?

If you could belong to any race of shape-shifters out of mythology, which one would it be?

Shape-shifters have always walked the earth. Shrouded in myth and folklore, hiding in the shadows, watching and waiting. Advances in modern science are now about to reveal them to the world. Kai Tenzin is the self appointed leader of the Pari people. He and his kind evolved from the most reclusive predators on earth. They live and hunt in the most fearsome and rugged terrain known to man, the Himalayas. Kai leaves his small village where the mountains touch the heavens, determined to do anything to protect his people. When he is forced to enlist the aid of the beautiful American scientist Dr. Rae Hales, the last thing he expects to find is a woman who will ensnare his heart and endanger them all. Their action-packed adventure will take them around the world to discover the truth behind the legends and reveal the future of humanity.

“My name is Kai Tenzin. I was born in a village high in the Himalaya mountains of Tibet.

I am a Pari. My people are born with the ability to transform into the animal you call the Asian Snow Leopard. The Pari have been among you since the dawn of human civilization. We have seen humanity at its worst. We have watched from the safety of our mountains, as human tyrants unleashed their destructive fury and let the blood of the innocent flow freely over the land. For centuries we have cowered in fear of what horrors the human heart would unleash upon us if discovered. We always strived to know the animal within us, but we always considered humans to be the true beasts. We feared you and did not wish to know you.

I am guilty of that crime more than any others of my kind, and yet, I personally have seen human compassion in action. When it does happen, it is an act of such profound beauty, that the darkest place in the universe, namely, the human heart, can not hide the infinite luminescence that shines forth. You have it within each and every one of you to be a shining flame that brightens the darkest night. We should have had more faith in that. I should have had more faith in your humanity and my own. Instead, I chose to help my people to continue to hide in darkness.

We stole from you the chance to know us and hid where only hate and fear can grow. For that I apologize and can only ask for your forgiveness. I stand here today, humbly begging you for a second chance. If we possess the courage, together, we can open our hearts to each other.

My name is Shelly Holt and I live in the middle of the harsh and unforgiving Mojave desert. I write my stories looking out of a window that shows sweeping desert views. Outside is a barren and severe landscape, yet inside my head lives a world filled with exotic shape-shifters come to life, pulled from the pages of myth and legend, ready to entice and seduce any reader brave enough to take them on.

It's funny, I never wanted to be a writer! In 7th grade English, we were given an assignment. We were told to write an original poem and turn it in the next day. I was determined to turn in not a good poem, but a great poem. I spent the whole night working on it instead of watching my favorite show, The Waltons. (Hey! it was 1980.) I turned it in the next day. Apparently, I succeeded a little too well and was accused of copying it from a book. (1980 remember, no internet yet). The teacher stated and I quote "this is too good for a seventh grader, where did you copy it from?" Well, I didn't write for 30 years after that. In my 40's, after a life changing move to rural Nevada as a caregiver to my father, I realized I needed a way to earn a little money on the side. I did some research on the internet and read all about a certain little book, about a certain little college student and a handsome billionaire with some ahem! (issues.) I decided after reading that book, I could do that, and Tasting Fire was born. I'll admit it's been strange revisiting a talent buried deep inside for so long, forgotten, but apparently not lost. It's been an important journey and one I am quite thankful for and excited to see where it takes me.

Shelly Holt

P.S. Mr. Jordan, I really did write that poem!

The Hands of Tarot by SM Blooding - Review tour and giveaway

(Full length Steampunk / SFF)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual tour with Goddess Fish Promotions. SM will be awarding a Tarot Doll of their choice to a randomly drawn commenter (US/Canada Only) during the tour (for more information: http://www.smblooding.com/ht1-order-tarot-doll-autographed-book), so comment today AND follow the tour (if you click on the tour banner above, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win an awesome prize!

She killed his father. She imprisoned and beat him.

And now she thinks he’s her trophy.

Synn El’Asim will do almost anything to prove her wrong. But he’s only proving her right.

Queen Nix awakened his Mark of power and inducted him into the House of Wands. She knew what she was doing. The son of the two most powerful Families standing against her is the ultimate prize.

What she didn’t take into consideration was that maybe he was too strong for her. Maybe.

The Families aren’t. They’ve been weakened, and it’ll take a lot more than one young man with a powerful Mark to take on the Hands of Tarot.

I have to say right off that I struggled with the book and with writing this review.  First: the book is marked as YA, but I wouldn't let my daughter read it (she's almost fourteen) because the torture the hero, Synn, goes through (as well as others that Nix has enslaved) is significantly sexual and while not a lot is laid bare on the page, it's definitely and very clearly implied.

However, older teens and adults, especially fans of fantasy and steampunk, should find this book quite satisfying.  Though I admit to being utterly confused through the first several chapters (I couldn't picture this world in my mind at all -- I felt as though I'd been tossed into a completely foreign land with no clues as to how any of it worked), eventually I began to figure things out and the last half of the book went much smoother.

The storyline and world is unlike any other I've seen.  I hesitate to call this "steampunk" since the genre includes a setting in an alternate 19th century Earth (I admit, I even looked it up and this wasn't the case with The Hands of Tarot.  Yes, the story has airships and technology, but it was still outside the usual. This isn't a bad thing ... it's one of the reasons I kept reading.  I was intrigued by the uniqueness of setting and story.

Ms. Blooding has done an excellent job creating a story I've never really seen before. Yes, we have great peril for groups of people and a tormented hero who has the entire world riding on his shoulders and who much make great sacrifices to save those he loves, but its presentation is fascinating and different.  And, the ending!  The author makes the reader feel as though ends are being wrapped up and then WHAM!  They're all loose again.  A strong start to what promises to be a really good series.  I'm certainly interested in what happens in the next book.  Well done, Ms. Blooding!

Rated 4 Flowers -- This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

SM Blooding lives in Colorado with her pet rock, Rockie, their new addition, Mr. Bird, who’s a real bird. She likes to hike the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and is learning to play the piano and guitar. Currently, she’s trying to MURDER them both. Friends call her Frankie.

She’s dated vampires, werewolves, sorcerers, weapons smugglers and US Government assassins. Yes. She has stories.

She’s also an investigator with a local paranormal investigation group, Colorado Paranormal Rescue!

Lust After Death by Daisy Harris - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

Today we're welcoming author Daisy Harris to the blog today on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions!! We're excited to showcase her latest release, an erotic romance titled "Lust After Death".

Daisy will be awarding a $20 gift certificate to Amazon or Barnes & Noble and a Walking Dead T-Shirt to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour (US and Canada Only), so comment today AND follow her tour (if you click on the banner above, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops)! The more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win a cool prize!

In the Pacific Northwest, where life hurries to keep pace with technology, a re-animated bride named Josie struggles to escape her creator and to find her identity in the half-erased circuitry of her mind and body.

Assassin Bane Connor just wants to get the girl to the Zombie Underground and receive his payoff-a mental reset that will erase his memories as well as his guilt. But an attack by a rival faction derails his rescue, and the wide-eyed female whose circuitry requires a husband tears at his hardened heart and ignites desire like he's never known.

Drizzling rain filled the air as Josie clamored up the trail after Bane. Her feet swam in the rain boots he’d given her and she considered that he hadn’t really thought through this plan very well in not bringing her clothes from Adam’s house.

The path curved up a hill, through tall trees whose branches overlapped and wide-spanning trunks that dropped leaves the size of her head.

He hitched his backpack higher on his shoulders and cinched the waistband tighter on his hips. The move drew her attention to the way the smooth and stretchy material of his trousers hung from his behind. Her fingers tingled to reach out and pinch the bunched muscles of his buttocks.

That brief glimpse of his thoughts echoed in her mind. Clearly he hadn’t meant to do her harm and now that the shock faded, she observed it from a different angle. Josie wondered at the snippet, curious about where it might have led.

She ran her hands through the brush that rose around her. Each branch was filled with droplets. Spikes pricked on some plants, others felt smooth. One felt soft and downy at first, then stung her curious fingers and Josie pulled her hand to her chest. Her legs ached as they summited the hilltop.

Bane led her a small ways down the other side and he pointed to a small clearing. “It won’t be the softest night’s sleep. But I’m so dead on my feet I won’t care.”

Josie cocked her head to the side and noticed the way his body slumped forward and his feet dragged. “This’ll be fine.”

Birkenstock-wearing glamour girl and mother of two by immaculate conception, Daisy Harris still isn't sure if she writes erotica. Her romances start out innocently enough. However, her characters behave like complete sluts. Much to Miss Harris's dismay the sex tends to get completely out of hand.

She writes about fantastical creatures and about young men getting their freak on, and she's never missed an episode of The Walking Dead.

Love or Luxury by Heather Thurmeier - Virtual Book Tour and giveaway

(Full length, contemporary romance)

This review is done in conjunction with the author's virtual tour with Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding one ebook copy of both "Love and Lattes" and "Love on Landing", the first two books in the Meadow Ridge Romance series, to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so comment today AND follow the tour (if you click on the tour banner above, it'll take you to a list of her tour stops) -- the more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win an awesome prize!

Rebecca's life of luxury in Meadow Ridge is vanishing faster than the designer clothes from her closet--unless she finds someone to share her life and her rent.

When she meets Finn, the rugged, sexy motorcycle hunk, she thinks her luck has finally changed. There's just one problem--he's not from Meadow Ridge. Reid, her high school flame, comes back to town as the Meadow's most eligible bachelor, with a tendency to spoil his girlfriends, and a gorgeous mansion--everything she's always wanted.

Now Rebecca's torn between Finn, the man who lives a simple life outside the Meadow and Reid, the man who can give her the life she's always wanted.

I admit to having a tough time getting into this story.  The heroine, Rebecca, is who we meet first and I disliked her very much.  She seemed superficial, careless, and very much a snob more concerned about coordinating her name brand handbag with her wardrobe than paying her rent.  Thankfully, as time passes, we see a different side to her, but the two sides vie for position through much of this book.

Finn, though, was amazing.  A not-quite-perfect hero with traits that were just awesome.  He was handsome, thoughtful, kind ... a bit hung up on not ever getting married which, along with his lack of a trust fund made Rebecca cross him off her list of potential husbands.  She figured he was good enough for a fling, though.

Reid was sort of a cardboard cut out of a rich doctor.  Nice enough, but nothing really made him stand out as a viable contender for Rebecca's affections. Yes, he could offer her everything material that she wanted, but the sparks just weren't there like they were with Finn.  Still, I really felt sorry for him when things ended up they way they did. I'm not sure if he was heartbroken or just horrified at the potential scandal, but either way he ended up being used a bit by Rebecca, and he didn't deserve it.

With a large cast of  secondary characters to round out the story (I did enjoy Finn's family, especially in the final scene), Love or Luxury is a somewhat predictable story, but still heart-warming to read as we see Rebecca mature and change the more time she spends with Finn.  Truthfully, I probably wouldn't have made it past the first chapter if I hadn't been reading this for a review, but I'm really glad I did.  The author has a way with words that really paints a picture.  I wouldn't have been so annoyed with the heroine if Ms. Thurmeier hadn't made her feel like a real person.  A different reviewer here at our site reviewed the first book, so this was my first trip to Meadow Ridge, but I enjoyed it enough I'd pick up another book in the series.

3.5 Flowers - This was a good book. I liked it.

Pinpoint by Sheila Mary Taylor - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

Today we're welcoming author Sheila Mary Taylor to the blog on her tour with Bewitching Book Tours for her Psychological Thriller, "Pinpoint".

The author will be awarding 5 print copies and 5 eBook copies of her book via the Rafflecopter at the bottom of this post -- and it's an international drawing!

Ms. Taylor was kind enough to answer all my prying questions. Thanks!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

Well now, the truth is I don’t ever plan to write in any particular genre. Pinpoint is a Psychological Thriller, and you could also tag it: Legal-Crime. But this isn’t because I set out to write in this genre. It’s always a complete accident because what happens is that I’m drawn not to a genre, but to a particular character whose predicament presents a scenario which is so challenging that I just have to find out what happens to her or him, and why. A character will begin to haunt me, to inhabit my dreams, to frighten me because of the predicament they are in. And it’s this predicament that decides what the “genre” will be, if indeed it belongs in any genre.

I know that more and more in this digital age, “genre” seems to be an all important element in defining how a book is presented, how it is marketed and in creating a niche for an author whereby she can make a brand name for herself. But somehow my writing at the moment is too spontaneous for me to be able to do this. Possibly one day I will find that niche.

What research is required?

For Pinpoint I had to do an enormous amount of research and I enjoyed every minute of it. I believe in trying to experience personally as much of what happens in the novel as I possibly can. Like going to the places I depict in the story; like actually taking part in my character’s activities. For example, I attended many murder trials in the Manchester Crown Court. I visited police stations and was even smuggled in to an interview room at Strangeways Prison when a solicitor was interviewing a murder suspect. I also enrolled in a self-protection class. I masqueraded as a social worker and knocked on people’s doors. I drove to outlandish areas I didn’t know, sometimes scared out of my wits. I walked through them and breathed in their air. Spoke to people I didn’t normally meet. And for those things I couldn’t do myself, I went directly to the highest authority available to give me first hand information, making sure I had my tape recorder switched on. People are so willing to help you when you say you are writing a novel!

Name one thing you learned from your heroine?

In exploring the predicament of Julia, my main character in Pinpoint, I learned that it isn’t always possible to do what in normal circumstances you know to be the right and logical thing to do. That circumstances can drastically affect or even twist your judgement, especially when you are on a cliff edge of deciding which precarious path to take. And this is the very crux of Julia’s predicament: on the one hand she has to consider the potential danger to her daughter that Sam Smith, her escaped murder poses, although if he is who she thinks he might be, she knows he couldn’t possibly harm her daughter; and on the other she is driven by her inborn love for her long-lost twin brother, who, even though her amnesia prevents her from remembering his name and face, she nevertheless knows that he was the one and only person up to the age of ten, who loved her and protected her.

Any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Getting up at 4:30 in the morning has never seemed odd to me, and yet my friends think I’m quite mad. But what better time of the day to start writing, when the brain is rested, fresh and ready to send out tendrils into the unknown to pluck new and wonderful ideas for your novel.

Plotter or pantser?

Oh, definitely pantser. Plotting doesn’t work for me. Sometimes I wish it did as it might even make my writing journey a lot simpler. But it’s almost as though my muse is saying to me, once I have my desperate heroine embroiled in her predicament – No! don’t even try to think what will happen next! That would spoil it for you. How could you possibly know all that stuff when your heroine doesn’t even know it. And if she knew, then there’d be no surprise – not for you and not for the heroine and not for the reader. Much better just to let it unravel, like it does in real life – an unpredictable surprise around every corner. Okay, okay! I tell my muse. I get the message …

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

I am trying really hard to cram as much into my life as I possibly can. When I turned 83 this year I had to resist doing a mental calculation which, let’s face it, might have made me pretty despondent. Having come to writing late in my life, and also holding down a full-time job as an editor for a publishing company, something I always wanted to do and which has belatedly changed my life, I still cannot resist making to-do lists. One of them is the myriad novels I intend to write. They are stacked up in an ever upward spiralling pile. I can’t tell you what genre they are in because as you already know that is only determined once my main character begins to embark on her journey of escape/fulfilment/discovery/retribution – whatever. So one of these days I might surprise you with something quite different but something I do hope you’ll read, even if it isn’t in your favourite genre.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m really excited about my new novel. It just needs a final edit and then it’s ready for my publisher. Dance to a Tangled Web also started out with one character in a predicament but has ended up with three main characters whose lives have become entwined, each with a seemingly unsolvable dilemma which nevertheless inescapably links them. There is even a very slightly paranormal touch to this one. I suppose you might call it a romantic drama. A physiotherapist working for a ballet company is married to an orthopaedic surgeon and they both desperately want and need a second child. IVF treatment fails with unexpected and catastrophic results, when the life of the third ethereal character is threatened. And though tragic from one point of view the ending is surprisingly gratifying. Nobody was more surprised at the outcome than I was.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Apropos my own situation, I wonder whether your readers like to know what kind of novel their favourite author is going to come up with next? Would they like to read more of the same? Or would they like to be surprised, not only by the content of the book but by the – to use that word that isn’t yet part of my vocabulary – the genre?

A lawyer, a murderer and a policeman - caught in a tangled web of love, loss, terror and intrigue.

When lawyer Julia Grant interviews Sam Smith who has been charged with an especially vicious murder, she feels a strange connection to him, as if she has met him before, as if he holds the key to something she has forgotten among the unbearable memories from her past she has determinedly blotted out.

He feels a connection too. "Julia, you are the only one who can help me," he pleads.

Is it the same connection? Does he know something she cannot recall?

When he is duly convicted despite her best efforts, he suddenly turns on her in the courtroom and threatens that one day he will make sure to wreak his revenge on her.

But why? What has she ever done to him?

And then, on his way to prison, he escapes ......

Sheila Mary Taylor was born in Cape Town beneath the towering slopes of Table Mountain. Her Scottish parents, both serious academics and writers, despaired of her, as the things that turned her on as a youngster seemed far removed from their serious world of academia.

And no wonder. Cape Town was a distracting paradise to grow up in: mountain climbing, surfing in the glistening waters of the Indian Ocean, roller-skating, riding, hunting – and parties galore. She did it all, although the thing she loved most was dancing, and until she was twenty-three when she met Colin, her husband-to-be, on a visit to the UK, she wanted to make ballet her career. But having been surrounded by wall-to-wall books from an early age, and listening to music almost non-stop as her father played his hi-fi classical records so loud it was like having an orchestra in the house, was bound to have a belated influence on her. Yet it was only much later that these two strong influences – combined with the clock-ticking heartbreak of her youngest son Andrew being diagnosed with teenage cancer – would change her life and kick-start her writing career.

Her plethora of unusual activities: jockey in amateur ladies’ races, exhibition roller skating in night-clubs, a spell of acting and directing, secretary to a diplomat, creator and editor of a dramatic society magazine, dancing in the Royal Albert Hall, and above all, living in exciting exotic places around the world with Colin, her mining engineer husband of almost sixty incredible years – have all enriched and inspired her writing.

Can you share a little about your current projects with us?

I’m currently working on book 4 in the Wicked Play series, Bonds of Hope. I just turned in book 3 and I’m now heads down on the next deadline. I’m really looking forward to writing this next book. The idea is still building in my mind and I’m getting excited as new a-ha moments keep popping into my head.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I have to write to music and it has to be with earbuds. I spent years as a consultant and found myself sitting in warehouse, crowded cubical farms or hallways. During that time I taught myself to work to music. I honestly don’t even hear it most of the time, but it seems to kick-in something in my brain that allows me to focus.

Is there a word, phrase or quote you like?

There is. It’s actually one a guy told me way back in high school and I’ve pretty much lived by it ever since. It’s gotten me through lots of tough times and keeps me moving forward.

Never ask why, always ask what.

You can ask why forever and never get an answer. Why did this happen? Why did I do that? Why… But the second you start asking what, you can start moving forward. What did I learn? What am I going to do? What else can I try? What is the catalyst that puts the problem in the past.

Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

Bonds of Trust and the Wicked Play world is all imagination. I find it interesting though that a lot of people assume that it’s based on my personal experiences. I think this is true of all authors who write in this genre. For some reason there’s a belief out there that because it’s sex, the author has to do it. People forget that it’s called fiction for a reason.

No one assumes that in order for Steven King to write about murderers and psychopaths, he has to be one. But for whatever reason, that same logic doesn’t apply to authors who write erotic romance. This standard is even higher for BDSM romance. I’ve seen a lot of criticism from people stating things like, “This wouldn’t happen in the real world.” Or, “BDSM isn’t really like this.” All I can think is, then it’s a good thing their reading fiction, because fiction isn’t meant to be real. The sole purpose of fiction is to entertain and allow people to escape their real lives one story at a time.

When you started your book, did you plan on writing it as a series, or did it just grow into one?

Bonds of Trust started out as the first book in a planned series. I have a whole diagram of the condo complex filled with people. I have stories just hanging out there waiting to be told. The fact that the series evolved into books around The Den wasn’t quite so planned. LOL! Originally, it was going to be about the people in the condo complex, but along came these sexy dominants from The Den and look what they did. Took control of the whole dang series before I even realized they’d done it. Ha! So much for plans.

Do you plot your stories or do you just get an idea and run with it?

I definitely have a plan of attack for each story. I don’t plot in detail, but I know my major plot and character turning points and write to those. However, these will almost always change as I start to write. But knowing what I first intended allows me to adjust as I go and still make the story right for the characters.

e-reader or print book?

e-reader all the way! I’ve pretty much been an exclusive ebook reader for over a year. I have three bookshelves full of unread print books that I can’t make myself read. I only buy ebooks too. The last print book I bought was during the Borders closing last year.

After ending her passionless marriage, Cali Reynolds is eager to live out her forbidden fantasies. Her first step is attending new members' night at The Den, the most exclusive sex club in town. Perhaps here she can find a man who understands her desire to be dominated…

At first, Jake McCallister thinks Cali has come to his club for the wrong reasons. But when he discovers she is seeking fulfillment after years of denial, he's intrigued—and takes it upon himself to initiate her into the pleasures she's been missing.

Her first encounter with Jake is everything Cali has always craved, and more; she's not prepared for the feelings he inspires in her. And Jake is just as surprised by his overwhelming attraction to Cali. As their play intensifies, so does their bond. Now, Jake doesn't want anyone but Cali—but is he ready to officially claim her? And will she submit to being his forever?

Inhale, exhale. Two simple, reflexive actions that seemed almost impossible for Cali to execute. Breathe. She had to forcibly remind herself oxygen was necessary. But then, she could hardly hear her own thoughts over the pounding of her heart.

It’d been four days since her final interview. Four days to digest and stew on the fact that she’d been granted membership to the exclusive sex club. She’d be mortified if anyone ever found out she was here. Just the thought of it had her swallowing back her dinner.

They won’t, she reminded herself. She could fulfill this side of her life without anyone knowing.

She forced herself to look around the small room in an attempt to focus on something besides her increasing anxiety. The space was tastefully decorated in deep burgundies and greens. The black leather love seat where she sat was positioned across from two matching chairs. A waiting room that with its warm tones and expensive furniture was more suited for a corporate office than a sex club.

What was she waiting for?

Had the club decided to revoke her membership before she’d even started? Then why did she spend the last half hour listening to all of the rules being repeated to the small group of new members like herself? It didn’t make sense. No one else had been excluded, pulled aside and singled out.

She’d gone through the interviews, both on paper and in person. Paid the exorbitant membership fee. Completed the new member checklist filled with questions that made her cheeks flame and her heart race at the images they conjured. Submission, spanking, bondage, anal play, voyeurism, exhibitionism—oh God, she had to think of something else.

Lynda Aicher has always loved to read. It’s a simple fact that has been true since she discovered the words of Judy Blume at the age of ten. After years of weekly travel as a consultant implementing computer software into global companies, she ended her nomadic lifestyle to raise her two children. Now, her imagination is her only limitation on where she can go and her writing lets her escape from the daily duties of being a mom, wife, chauffer, scheduler, cook, teacher, volunteer, cleaner and mediator. If writing wasn’t a priority, it wouldn’t get done.

King Biscuit by Michael Loyd Gray - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

Today we're welcoming author Michael Loyd Gray  to the blog on his tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for the 1960s historical, "King Biscuit".  We had the privilege of reviewing this novel and you can read our review here.

Michael is giving away a $25 Amazon GC to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so comment today AND follow his tour (if you click on the banner above, it'll take you to a list of his tour stops)! The more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win a GC!

Michael has a question for our readers that I hope you can answer.

Thanks for the opportunity to appear here and to promote my novel King Biscuit. I would love to hear from readers as to what they think makes a novel Young Adult. Or why we need a YA classification. I do understand that YA is a thriving genre, but I didn’t write King Biscuit as a YA novel, for example. I had a story to tell and didn’t worry much about how it might be classified. The publisher classified it that way—indeed, Tempest Books is their new YA imprint.

The novel’s protagonist, Billy Ray Fleener, is seventeen and that’s what made it YA, I guess. But the book has sex, drugs, and rock and roll and takes place in a world of adults – Elvis Presley and President Lyndon Johnson are in it, for goodness sake. So, readers, why do we make a distinction? How old would Billy Ray have to be for it to not be YA? I write novels in part to have people think and so I write this post to have people think about this issue, too. I’m not complaining about the genre classification – just trying to better understand it.

It’s 1966. The Beatles have taken over the airways, Star Trek is in its first season on NBC, and 389,000 American troops are stationed in Vietnam.

A war is going on Argus, Illinois as well, between sixteen-year-old Billy Ray Fleener and his father. While his father dreams of Billy Ray joining the family business, Billy Ray dreams of moving to California, becoming a surfer, and getting into Margie Heinrich’s pants—not necessarily in that order. Instead, he gets a summer laying pipe and the dubious distinction of town hero after saving Purdy Boy, the mayor’s wife’s dachshund.

When his beloved uncle and role model Mitch is killed in combat, Billy Ray feels like he must leave Argus or be stuck there forever. With little more than the clothes on his back, he hops a bus for Helena, Arkansas to visit Mitch’s grave. Along the way he meets up with a cast of characters as varied and polarized as America itself, from a marine captain home on leave to a band of hippies bound for Graceland. Each teaches him something about love, loyalty, and the true meaning of freedom, but what Billy Ray really learns is that everyone has the power to define who they are. He may have left Argus a boy, but he returns a man.

Billy Ray had never heard of Moby Grape or Jefferson Airplane or Buffalo Springfield. And soon his thoughts had drifted back to Argus, back to Moss. There wasn’t anything he could do about that. He didn’t understand it and there wasn’t anything to do about it. Casualties, Milt had said. Life piles up casualties. Part of the deal. You move on as best you can and avoid becoming a casualty yourself. But Billy Ray understood it was still new to him and so he still was hurting inside for Moss, but accepted it was out of his hands. Life, that great maker of rules and decider of consequences, would sort it out. Or so Billy Ray figured. He’d said his goodbye to Moss and even prayed for him. Moss was the only one Billy Ray had told other than his parents about hitting the road to see the world beyond Argus; and Moss seemed relieved to talk about something other than his own problems. He understood that Billy Ray needed to escape, joking that he’d like to escape, too. When Wino pulled over for burgers in Cape Girardeau, the nearly-twins ate lustily, said hello to Billy Ray, then crawled back into their comas.

“Saving their voices, I suppose,” Billy Ray told Wino.

“Something like that.”

Review: King Biscuit by Michael Loyd Gray

When I began reading this story, I wasn't sure what to expect. Would I be bored reading just another YA book about a teen-aged boy?

I quickly discovered this wasn't "just another book". Yes it was a book about a teen-aged boy, but it was so much more than that. The writer skillfully places the reader into the head of his protagonist and I became immediately invested in Billy Ray and worried about the direction his life would take.  As the story progressed and, as he learns about life and begins to mature, I really got hooked.

The story began in the late 60's and follows him for a couple of years.  At the start, he's pretty typical:  all he wants from life is to date Margie, the most popular girl in school, and to go to California and become a surfer.  I don't want to go into any more detail about the story itself because l don't want to spoil this story for anyone.

I didn't want to put the book down.  I admit to being surprised at how deep my interest ran.  This isn't the type of book I normally read.

I want you all to know that this is a wonderful story of a young man's growth and maturity. I really loved him, and the story. I recommend this book for anyone looking for a realistic and tender story of a young man during a difficult period in our country.  I challenge you to read this and not come away at least a little affected by what he went through and the choices he made.

4.5 / 5 Flowers - This was a very good book! I'd recommend it to my friends.

The Season of Sin by Stacy-Deanne - Author Interview

Today I'd like to welcome author Stacy-Deanne here to talk about her novel, "The Season of Sin".

She was gracious enough to answer all my prying questions:

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

My main genres are mystery/suspense and crime fiction. I have always loved mysteries ever since being a child. I am a big Alfred Hitchcock fan and fell in love with his movies and his brilliance. He is my biggest idol and the reason I love the suspense genre.

What research is required?

It depends on the type of story I’m writing. Not every story requires research. Mainly the research I do is for police procedures, etc. But I’ve been writing in this genre so long that I know a lot by heart. I still do research from time to time but like I said, it does depend on the story and what I’m including in it.

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

When it comes to my heroine Bree, who is the star of my Interracial Suspense series, I learned that no matter how independent you are, you need people. Bree is a police detective so she is use to taking care of herself but she doesn’t understand that needing people isn’t a sign of weakness. She’s always trying to prove she can handle everything alone. I’m kind of the same way with certain things.

Plotter or pantser?

I usually write down what I wanna write as I go but most times the story takes its own course and that’s what’s exciting for me. I love it when the story comes into its own and the characters take over. That’s what makes the story more realistic and natural. You never should fight the feeling of letting the story work its own magic. I might have something in mind that I wanna write but if it doesn’t end up fitting I don’t force it. I let the story breathe and that’s what makes the writing so interesting for me.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

My 44 oz. water jug, printer and a bunch of blank CD’s.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m excited that my third installment in the Bree and Steven series, The Wild Life will be out summer 2013!

Do you have a question for our readers?

Yep. How loyal are you to your favorite authors?

The Season of Sin:

Detective Brianna “Bree” Morris and her partner and ex-lover Steven Kemp are back. This time they are thrown head first into a gruesome homicide that brings forth as many secrets as it does clues.

Brianna’s psychiatrist, Dr. Nadia Hollister is stabbed to death in her upstairs bathroom. Brianna, who is at Nadia’s while the murder happens, is the only witness. Unfortunately she was knocked unconscious by the killer and only has the memory of the killer’s scent to go on.

Brianna and Steven sign on to help Homicide Detective Jayce Matthews solve the case. With Nadia’s journals as her guide, Bree learns that Nadia was keeping a devastating secret that has something to do with her adopted daughter. The renowned doctor was not whom she seemed to be and her secret may not have only got her killed but could ruin the foundation of her entire family.

The police hunt for suspects but Nadia’s secret could wreck the lives of many, all who have motive to kill her.

The deeper Brianna and Steven dig into Nadia’s past; the more they question whether Nadia was the true victim after all.

The Billionaire Playboy by Christina Tetreault - Virtual Tour and Giveaway

Today we're welcoming author Christina Tetrault to the blog on her tour with Goddess Fish Promotions for her contemporary romance, "The Billionaire Playboy".

Christina will be awarding a $10 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so comment today AND follow her tour (if you click on the banner over there on the top, it'll take you to a list of his tour stops)! The more you read and comment, the better your odds of winning. You could be introduced to a great new author AND win prize!

Christina was kind enough to answer all my prying questions. Thanks!

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I currently write in the contemporary romance genre even though it is not the only type of romance I enjoy reading. Someday I hope to expand and try writing a historical romance as well as a paranormal romance. Right now though I stick to contemporary romance for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I love the stories in that genre. I like reading about everyday people that I could possibly meet on the street and then making them fall in love. I also enjoy writing in this genre because there is a limited amount of research required . As a mom to 3 small children, a Daisy Girl Scout Leader and a MOMS Club president I just do not have the time to do a lot of research and write a great book.

What research is required?

Since I write contemporary romance, there is not a lot of research required. True I sometimes need to research a location or a job description but I do not need to research the type of clothing a character would wear or how they would travel from place to place.

Name one thing you learned from your heroine.

One thing that I learned from my heroine? Now that is a thought provoking question. I think I learned to never give up. No matter what keep trying. My first book took me almost 5 years to write. More than once I stopped writing it, but the main character in that first book demanded that I finish her story.

Any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I think it is a little odd, but I have to write all my stories out long hand first. Once I complete a rough draft, I type it in then print it out and do revisions and edits on a paper copy. The whole thing is very time consuming but I can not seem to break the habit.

Plotter or pantser?

I don't really consider myself either. I find that I am somewhere in the middle. I have a general idea of what I want to happen when I start, but not enough to create a detailed outline.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

If I look to my right, I see my Jack Russell Terrier, Niles. He is one of my dogs that I adopted from a shelter 10 years ago. He is like my shadow.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Currently, I am working on the 3rd book in The Sherbrookes of Newport Series. It should be out sometime in 2013.

Do you have a question for our readers?

As a reader I know that I have favorite types of characters and themes. I am curious what types of characters and themes do they enjoy and why. What draws you to them.

She's spent her life avoiding love.

Captain Charlotte “Charlie” O'Brien, a doctor in the United States Navy, returns to her home in North Salem, Massachusetts to visit her family and make an important decision about her future. Mother Nature has other plans when a hurricane strikes, flooding the town and throwing Jake Sherbrooke in Charlie's path. Initially she believes Jake is nothing more than a rich playboy, but quickly, she learns that he is so much more.

The media calls him Prince Charming.

Jake Sherbrooke has never been one to follow the path laid out by his parents. That is why hestarted the Falmouth Foundation, a non-profit disaster relief organization rather than enter politics. When he learns of the destruction in North Salem, he immediately travels there to offer aid and meets Charlie O'Brien. Charlie is unlike any woman he has ever meet and he can not help but be drawn to her.

Soon neither can ignore the incredible chemistry between them. But will his reputation as a billionaire playboy damage their budding romance?

Turning on her heel, she noticed that Jake had pulled his white dress shirt out of his pants. Before he could begin to unbutton it, she moved closer to him and brushed his fingers away from the tiny buttons.

“Let me,” she whispered against his lips. She heard a deep intake of breath and couldn't contain her smile.

Charlie took her time undoing each tiny pearl button. Between each one she placed a gentle kiss on his lips or caressed his arm or back. The change in his breathing let her know her actions excited him. As she trailed a hand down his chest she wondered just how long she could tease him before he turned the tables. Jake didn't give her the opportunity to do anything else before tearing his arms out of the shirt as soon as she slipped the final button from its hole. The white t-shirt he wore underneath immediately followed, both of them quickly landing in a pile on the floor.

Jake with clothes on was gorgeous, but half-naked he was simply a sight to behold. Unable to stop herself, she ran a hand over his powerful chest then down his sculptured abs. She felt his abs contract and a new feeling of empowerment flowed through her. Without pausing she let her hand travel down further toward his belt buckle. With deliberate movements she undid the buckle making sure her hand brushed over his erection more than once.

After her third pass, he gripped her wrists. “I suggest you let me finish.” Jake didn't wait for a reply. Once he undid his tux pants and added them to the growing pile on the floor he took a step back toward her. “My turn.”

He began by pulling the pins from her hair. Once the twist she'd fashioned was gone, he slid his hands over her bare shoulders and back to the zipper of her dress. Inch by agonizing inch Charlie felt the zipper move downward until the only thing holding the dress up was the fact that her body was pressed tightly against Jake.

“I think it's time we get rid of this.” As Jake whispered in her ear he took a step back and the dress began to fall away from her body.

Determined to remain calm, she fought the unexpected urge to grab the dress and yank it back into place, and when the dress hit the floor around her ankles she deliberately stepped out of it. Her heart pounded an erratic rhythm as she stood there in nothing but her white lace thong, strapless bra and heels. Despite her discomfort she never once looked away from Jake's face.

The raw desire she saw on his face as his gaze slowly and seductively slid down her body extinguished any fears and replaced them with a burning desire that set every inch of her body on fire. Her entire body craved his touch and she wanted nothing more than to fall into the bed behind them, wrap her body around his and satisfy her craving. With every intention of doing just that Charlie took a step toward him, but Jake reached for her first and held her in place. Slowly his eyes traveled from her face down to her feet and then back again. As his gaze moved over her it left a trail of pulsing excitement behind on her skin.

“You're sexier then I imagined.”

Whether because of his compliment or the way his eyes devoured her, Charlie's confidence grew stronger. Before she could rethink her decision, she undid the tiny hooks at the back of her bra and tossed it on the floor. At the sound of Jake's sharp intake of breath she smiled. Before she could do or say anything else he closed the gap between them and scooped her off her feet.

I wrote my first story with characters similar to those in the Sweet Valley Twins books at the age of 10 on my grandmother's manual typewriter. As I got older my stories and characters became more mature. During my freshman year at UMass Dartmouth, I read my first romance novel and fell in love with the genre. I have been writing contemporary romance ever since.

Today I live with my husband, three beautiful daughters and two dogs in Massachusetts. Whenever I have a free moment you'll find me either reading a romance novel or working on my most current story.
