MediaKit_BookCover_TheHouseAtHomecomingCoveSeeking out solitude in which to work, New York City music composer Melissa Carter rents a century-old farmhouse on the Virginia Eastern Shore. There, she meets a loner with rugged good looks and smoldering gray eyes, who has long-term ties to the property. When strange things start occurring at the historic home, the handsome groundskeeper comes to her aid, but is Melissa really safer in his arms?

When Stone Thomas meets a pretty northerner with a musical gift, he's immediately drawn to her. He's also determined to protect her from the increasingly odd happenings at the fifty-acre farm where he's employed. Soon, Stone finds himself wondering whether he and beautiful Melissa might share a future. Yet the secrets of Homecoming Cove threaten to drive them apart.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Her words came out in a whisper. “Thank you for everything. For coming to my rescue, for…” She was saying goodbye, yet her chin tilted toward his and she took a step closer, her lips barely parted, inviting. She peered up at him and met his gaze with a look that was surprisingly heated, decidedly predatory. There was no mistaking it. Melissa wanted him too. That was all the encouragement Stone needed to take her in his arms and bring his mouth down on hers with a hungry desire that surpassed all expectations.

Melissa gasped with delight and sighed into his kiss. Stone’s empty mug slid from her grasp and landed somewhere on the sofa. Stone pressed his eager body to hers and ran his hands up her back, threading his fingers through her hair. She was glorious, beautiful, her gaze sparking with reciprocal passion. Stone groaned and kissed her again, savoring the taste of her, delighting in the sweetness of her body molded to his, as his blood pumped harder and his heart beat like a kettledrum gone out of control. It was more than a kiss; it was like coming home.

“Stone,” she said breathlessly. He opened his eyes to find his cheeks nestled between her palms.

She looked up at him her face flushed with longing. “I think you’d better go.”

“Yeah,” he said, his pulse pounding. “I’d better go.”

Thunder boomed and rain slapped the windowpanes, while the fire hissed and moaned.

Neither one moved.

“Melissa,” Stone whispered, brushing his lips over hers. “You and me… It’s like… I don’t know.”

“I know,” she replied, meeting his kiss. “I feel it too.”

The Fourth Law by Clayton Barnett - Interview and Giveaway

VBT_TourBanner_TheFourthLaw copy

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Clayton Barnett will be awarding a $30 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books, Clayton. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

First of all, I suppose it’s a matter of defining my genre. If you include my visual novels as well, then perhaps the broadest definition would be ‘speculative fiction.’ I recall a moment from some years ago, when working on one of the character paths of OTChi Kocchi; I sent a message to my collaborator asking if I could include ‘Secondary World’ elements in the story. Naturally, he texted back to ask what the hell I was talking about. I’d borrowed the phrase from Tolkien, who disliked using the term ‘magic.’

While, in The Fourth Law, I am dealing with technology; it is a technology so advanced that, per Clarke’s Third Law, it is indestinguishable from magic. That allows me the luxury of pushing it into the background and concentrating on the characters and their lives together. I suppose I’m drawn to a genre such as this as it allows me tremendous freedom of action when it comes to what I can do with the characters.

What research (or world-building – for fantasy/paranormal/Sci-fi) is required?

I needed not only a reasonable understanding of where AI development is now, but also what readers’ expectations might be based upon similar works over the recent years. Something that has always stuck with me, going all the way back to William Gibson’s stories in the 1980’s, was how fast AI’s think. That colors absolutely everything I write about them.

On a more mundane level, Google Maps saved me the airfare and hotel costs of going to Waxahachie, Texas. As I’m talking about a real place in, largely, current time, it was my responsibility to get the lay of the land correct for my story. I actually know someone who lives and works there, and I’d be ashamed as a writer if he called me and said “you got this wrong; that’s over there; that’s totally different!”

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine

I make the time to pray before I go to bed. If I can force myself to make time to write, then I can force myself to take a moment to give thanks to God for letting me write. Lily has made me older in that regard, and I thank her for it.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I did, and hopefully it’s gone now! I don’t really ‘write a story.’ When I make the time, I sit down at my computer and transcribe whatever scene or scenes that I saw in my mind during the day. It’s as if I see fifteen to thirty minute shorts of a video of the action of the novel, and I’m just the guy that’s reverse-engineering it into a script.

The problem of that is transitions. When I first wrote T4L, it was “this happened, THEN that happened, THEN this other thing happened….” Looking at my very first draft, I must have written ‘then’ about three thousand times! That made for a long, horrible bit of editing! Aware of the problem now, I make an effort to avoid it, but sometimes it still creeps in.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Oh, Good Lord, pants all the way. I made a point of this when giving a talk to the kids at my girl’s school about creative writing and self-publishing. When I first started The Fourth Law, I’d only the vaguest idea of who Lily Barrett was; I didn’t even know Ai’s name at that point! The orphanage and hospital, the rest of Ai’s family and “their home,” that’s all things I saw as I wanted to know more and more about who these people are. Even the ending – and the sequel it provoked – was a complete surprise to me!

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

An old secretary desk that used to belong to my maternal grandparents. The front of it is open and the cable modem and wifi router sit there. My wife, of course, has laid some papers on it; likely to be shredded later. Rather banal, really.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

Absolutely! I’m fascinated by these people and very much want to know more about them!. I have already released the immediate sequel to T4L, called Echoes of Family Lost; I suppose I need to start another book tour! I’ve written the text for a 20-page children’s book entitled Henge’s Big Day! That’s about Ai’s niece; a cute little tale set when she got baptized. That’s being illustrated by a wonderful artist in New Zealand; I hope to have it out by late November.

Within the world of Machine Civilization but with a completely different set of characters and hundreds of miles away, I’m collaborating with another artist on a webcomic tentatively entitled Poisoned Hearts. Secondary World forces? I’d like a double serving, please!

I’ve some thoughts and notes about a book that takes place a few years before T4L; the main character, Sylvia Fernandez, is Legal Counsel to Clive Barrett and his domestic terror organization, ExComm. I’ve never tried to ‘see’ something as unpleasant as this, and it’s been slow-going. I may use the next NaNoWriMo to force this book out!

Do you have a question for our readers?

Oh, surely! For any of those familiar with my stories, are there some things – characters, plot – that you find interesting, and conversely, what things do you not? While these are my stories, I’m curious as to what others may see.

MediaKit_BookCover_TheFourthLawIn 2026, 23 year-old apprentice nurse Lily Barrett lives in a shattered time. Following its economic collapse, the US has devolved into a group of a few barely-functional smaller states, and vast swathes of barbarian badlands. Her sister has been missing for years, and her father, after earning the opprobrium of most of the world for running a state terror organization, presumed dead.

Two things keep her going: her live-in job at a small, Catholic orphanage in the city of Waxahachie, Republic of Texas, and Ai, her odd, but dear friend, whom she met online: a young woman who only shows herself to Lily as a rendered CG image.

Troubled by her past, haunted by her name, and facing an uncertain future, Lily seeks only a quiet, normal life. But, that past and her present conspire against her. A new Morning has come, and with it, delights and terrors, happiness and adversity.

Where do we come from?
What are we?
Where are we going?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Lily went off to her right while Ai continued towards the Office building. She’d just started moving the gate when another of Ai’s groupies stepped out of the darkness.

“You. Are you the robot?” The woman’s snippy, non-Texan voice was one thing; calling Ai ‘the robot’ was yet another.

“No, I’m not! This orphanage is closed for the day! Please come back tomorrow... with a donation!” Take that, Carol!

“If you ain’t the robot, you’re Barrett!”

Lily heard an odd, loud pop. Fireworks? She took one step back, started falling backwards. There it was again.

“That’s for closing the Wymyn’s Studies Department at the University!” Lily wondered if that was even English.

She found herself suddenly on her butt; why did she sit down? Running. Was that Ai? She rocked her head up just as Ai leapt over her. Did Ai just kick that rude woman in the head? Suddenly cold, she put her hands across her chest. Why was her chest so wet?

Ai was kneeling next to her. “Lily! You’ve been shot!”

Oh, please! “Ai... don’t be silly... I’m fine...urk!” She coughed something dark and nasty onto Ai’s face. “Oooo! I’m soooryyy... Ai! I’m so tired... want to slee—”

Faintly, she heard Ai scream louder than she’d thought possible. “DORINA!”

Moonstone Conspiracy by Elizabeth Ellen Carter - Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Elizabeth Ellen Carter will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five Things You Might Not Know About Elizabeth Ellen Carter

1. Elizabeth is not really my name. I chose the pen name Elizabeth Ellen Carter to honour two very special women who are no longer with us. My mother, Elizabeth had such a passion for books. She raised my sister and I on her own and taught us a love of books. She went back to college and became the first in our family to get a tertiary education and became a school librarian. Ellen is named for my mother-in-law who died when my husband was in his early 20s and sadly I never got to meet her.

2. I love mid-20th century furniture design, architecture, fashion and film and television shows – particularly things from the 1950s and 60s. Not ‘rock and roll’ but sophisticated style known as ‘mid-century modern’ – sleek Danish teak furniture, the ‘splitting the atom’ style accessories, in timber, steel and plastics. I have a couple of original pieces, including a dining table I inherited from my mother, but other pieces I pick up from second hand stores and car boot sales.

3. Speaking of history, I love collecting bits and pieces of history from my home city, the Gold Coast in Queensland, which is a sub-tropical resort city which has been a popular holiday destination since the 1880s. Like with most modern cities, a lot of original buildings get torn down and new ones built to cater for more visitors and more residents. My earliest piece of souvenirware is a post card from 1914, but most of the collection is from the 1960s.

4. Hmmm, what else can I tell you about me… I had to get a pop star (if you have Australian or English readers they might remember Peter Andre) and his brothers to help me break into my car when I was a young newspaper reporter. I had locked my keys in the car (again) and hadn’t realized until after the interview. Peter and his brothers were such gents and didn’t leave me stranded.

5. Okay, one last thing! When I was younger, I wanted to become a detective just like Nancy Drew, but as I got older I realized it was more fun to write the adventures than live them.

Revolution in France, rebels in England, and one woman caught in the crossfire...

For her unwitting participation in a plot to embezzle the Exchequer, Lady Abigail Houghall has spent the last two years exiled to the city of Bath. A card sharp, sometime mistress, and target of scandalous gossip by the London Beau Monde, Lady Abigail plots to escape her gilded cage as well as the prudish society that condemns her. But the times are not easy. France is in chaos. The king has been executed, and whispers of a similar revolution are stirring in England. And because of her participation in the robbery plot, the Spymaster of England is blackmailing her into passing him information about the members of London’s upper crust.

When the dashing English spy Daniel Ridgeway takes a seat at her card table and threatens to expose her for cheating, she has no choice but to do as he demands: seduce the leader of the revolutionaries and learn what she can about their plot. As she’s drawn deeper into Daniel’s dangerous world, from the seedy backstreets of London to the claustrophobic catacombs of a war-torn Paris, she realizes an even more dangerous fact. She’s falling in love with her seductive partner. And the stakes of this game might just be too high, even for her.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Daniel picked his moment carefully. He watched Sir Percy’s wife leave with another group soon after the announcement was made. And although he made no especial effort to hide, he nonetheless remained in the shadows. He pulled out a cigar and lit it on a nearby taper.

As soon as he heard the footman call for Sir Percy’s carriage, he stepped forward into the carriage and waited for Blakeney to join him.

“Send me to France, Percy,” he said as soon as the carriage jolted into motion.

“I’m not going to do that,” Blakeney replied.

“You can’t just leave Jonathan there!”

“He signed on knowing the same risks as you.”

“He has a wife and children!”

“And you seem inordinately fond of them,” Sir Percy snapped back. “You saw the list you gave me tonight. A dozen good men and women dead because of the Jacobins. I’m not prepared to risk more. Not until we know what we’re up against.”

“It could be too late!”

“You took an oath when you joined the League, Ridgeway. One to command, all to obey. Bear that in mind.”

Daniel leaned forward and rested his arms on his knees and exhaled long and sharp.

He felt Percy slap him on the back.

“Just wait a week until we know the lay of the land. I haven’t studied the documents you gave me and Parliament hasn’t even prepared a response to the National Committee’s declaration of war.”

“A week is a long time, Percy,” Daniel warned.

“So is eternity, dear chap. Don’t lose your head. As you well know, those Frenchies have a devilish way of parting you from it.”

About the Author:
Elizabeth Ellen Carter’s debut novel, Moonstone Obsession, was published in 2013 by Etopia Press. Earlier that year, the Regency adventure romance had been shortlisted in the Romance Writers of Australia Emerald Awards for Best Unpublished Manuscript. Set in England and France during the French Revolution, it was heralded as ‘edge-of-seat adventure and intrigue’ and ‘a rollercoaster of love, blackmail, ill-gotten gains, treason and trickery’ with Carter described as ‘a writer worth keeping an eye on’ with ‘a hint of classic suspense novelist Daphne du Maurier’.

Her second novel, Warrior’s Surrender, was published by Etopia the following year. Set in Northumbria in 1077, it sets the relationship between a displaced Saxon noblewoman and a Norman baron against the turbulent backdrop of England in the years following the Norman invasion of 1066. Reviewers found the novel ‘a fast moving and passionate read’ with ‘strong characters, an intriguing plot, and plenty of action… a sexy romance to be savoured’. Readers agreed, voting Warrior’s Surrender Favourite Historical Fiction in the 2015 Readers & Writers Down Under Readers Choice Awards.

Also in 2014, the short story Moonstone Promise, spinning off from Moonstone Obsession as part of Etopia’s Valentines Heat anthology, followed the fortunes of one of the supporting characters back home to 18th century Pittsburgh in a tale of ‘second chance romance’.

Warrior’s Surrender (now in print as well as eBook) was named Favourite Historical Fiction at the 2015 Readers & Writers Down Under Readers Choice Awards in March this year.

Carter moved up to 1802 for the light-hearted romantic short story Three Ships, part of the Christmas 2014 anthology A Season To Remember, and ventures briefly into contemporary romance for the first time with her Romance Writers of Australia annual Little Gems competition placegetter, The Tin Bear, publishing in August 2015.

And another Moonstone Obsession character, the sinful Lady Abigail Houghall, features in the full length novel Moonstone Conspiracy, coming from Etopia Press in 2015.

Carter is currently working on her fourth novel, set in ancient Rome and tentatively titled Dark Heart, which will bring together the elements for which she has become known in just a few years – in-depth historical detail woven through gripping adventure and captivating romance.

The author lives in Australia with her husband and two cats. A former newspaper journalist, she ran an award-winning PR agency for 12 years.

First Impressions by Peggy Jaeger - Guest Blog and Giveaway

Five Things You Might Not Know About Peggy Jaeger

1. I love to sing when I’m cleaning the house. Rip-roaring, shatter your eardrums singing. I jack my I-pod up to level 11 (any Spinal Tap fans out there?) and as I go around the house, vacuuming, dusting, and rearranging, I belt my heart out. Of course I only clean (and sing) when no one is home because, really, it’s not nice to torture people.

2. I am on old black and white movie savant. 1939 was the best year – in my humble opinion – for the movie industry. Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Of Mice and Men, Dark Victory, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Women….and on and on. I can quote entire scenes of dialogue from most of them and I never lose in Trivial Pursuit when a question about this year in film comes up. Never.

3. My very first childhood celebrity crush was Roddy McDowell. I know…but I was a sucker for those Lassie movies!

4. I went on my very first “date” when I was 22 years old and had just graduated from college. Late bloomer, anyone? Is it a wonder at all that I love to read and write Romance novels??

5. I’m terrified of dogs I don’t personally know because I was viciously bitten by a German Shepard when I was 2 years old. I still have the scars on my leg from the encounter.

Family Practice Doctor Clarissa Rogers’ first impression of Padric Cleary is biased and based on gossip. The handsome, charming veterinarian is considered a serial dater and commitment-phobic by his family and most of the town. Relationship shy, Clarissa refuses to lose her heart to a man who can’t pledge himself to her forever.

Pat Cleary, despite his reputation, is actually looking for "The One." When he does give his heart away, he wants it to be for life. With his parent’s marriage as his guidebook, he wants a woman who will be his equal and soul mate in every way.

Can Pat convince everyone – including Clarissa – she’s the only woman for him?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Have you ever been friends with a girl before?” she finally asked.

“Friends?”

“Yes. Friends.”

“Have a beer and shoot some pool friends? Or the kind with benefits?”

She laughed out loud, shook her head and grinned. “Have you ever been friends with a girl without having sex mixed into the equation?”

“Not since I was sixteen,” he admitted and then felt his neck heat. “Why?”

So much hinges on the efforts of so few—if they fail in their quest, if the evil witch Korina the Black succeeds, she may gain an unrivaled power over the forces of darkness; a power she will not hesitate to use.

Enjoy an excerpt:

It appears my mistress needs me again, which is good, in a way ... my hunger has returned and I am due for another feeding. I relax as I am pulled up the last short channel of the jar; I concentrate on the sensations and feelings that barrage my mind as my essence twists and turns, undulating in response to the summoning magic.

Coalescing from mist form to human, I become aware of another presence in this chamber. Something strong and powerful, reeking of magic and other rancid odors. Glancing in the creature’s direction is enough to identify it: an arcagrich, a demon I am familiar with, although I have not seen one in a thousand years. I turn away from the demon and glance back towards Korina. She stands several feet from me in a summoning circle; she looks ... pale, almost frightened. I’m glad she still respects me, but really? I do not intend to break my word ... at least, not yet.

The crack of a multi-lashed whip splits the air and my vision explodes. Staggering, I drop to one knee as the shock and pain hit me. I gasp: there was more than just metal behind that whip! I lift a hand to my face; it is a mangled ruin. Three long furrows streak across my cheek and another one mars the pale flesh of my neck.

I turn to look at my assailant, angry, yet cautious.

“Lucian! Slay that demon,” Korina says.

Now, I understand. Her pet has escaped. And she wants to use me to clean up her mess. I might have refused, if the creature had not attacked me. But it is an arcagrich. Can I take an arcagrich?

Why, yes. I believe I can.

Love by Numbers by Sara Donovan - Interview and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Sara will be awarding an eCopy of Love by Numbers to 3 randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Welcome to It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write romantic comedies because being in love and lust with someone, then trying to create long term intimacy with them without being engulfed, is so damn tough and funny and compelling in my experience, I can’t leave the topic alone. I guess I write about what I need to learn.

What research is required?

The external world of Love By Numbers that I hoped would be fresh for readers was the world of the science of the ‘brain in love’ – in particular how ‘influence-able’ the falling in love experience can be both by the environment and by our early childhood experiences.

I read lots and lots of studies and a book or two on neuroscience, attachment theory and what you can do to get your “in love” brain circuitry and brain chemicals to fire up with someone you choose.

That was the easy bit.

Researching my own painful experiences, especially the embarrassing and ugly ones – like my own occasional borderline obsessiveness, my feelings of powerlessness around some men and my sometimes complete insensitivity to other people, were the harder things to truly research.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

My heroine and my hero taught me that some people can look fragile on the outside, and be actually very resilient on the inside, while others can look tough as nails on the outside and be mush on the inside.

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I have a fabulous writing quirk – and it has to do with neuroscience.

Before I discovered my quirk, I would often sit for hours staring at my computer screen wondering how to overcome a block or fix a problem.

Eventually, I would get an idea, write a scene for an experiment, then backspace it to oblivion a few minutes later. Then the staring would set in again. Very frustrating!

When I was taught the role of the conscious and unconscious mind in creativity, I took the following steps when things were clearly going down the unproductive route:

1) Work out exactly what you don’t know but need to know to progress your writing.
2) Express what you don’t know in the form of a question
3) Go and do something fun and forget you’ve asked the question
4) Expect that when you are in the shower, or have just woken up, or are driving the car, or walking in the bush, or chopping the veggies etc that the answer will pop into your head and give you a surprise
5) Thank your unconscious mind for the answer

Sounds quirky to me despite the fact I know that using your conscious mind to ask the question and your unconscious mind to answer the question works really well.

It’s the same process that happens when you forget what you were saying when you’re in a conversation. You change the subject so that you can remember what it was you were saying before you forgot….

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I need structure so I can break the structure.

I utilise story templates, character templates and even scene templates when I write. I’m a template junky compared to most writers I know.

I fill out all the templates in longhand first, then go to the computer and type whatever feels right – which usually turns out to be what I’ve plotted on my templates, but not always.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

I’m on a Qantas jet that’s taxiing down the runway at LA airport. There’s an Australian girl in her twenties sitting next to me who is thumb texting at a million miles an hour even though we’ve been told to turn our phones off.

Anything new coming up from you? What?

I’m working on a romantic comedy about a socially active women who is trying to save the world and win the guy at the same time. She’s a wannabe documentary film maker who is in love with the subject of her film – a social activist who is living off the grid in what appears to be an ideal community.

The story is an exploration of the monogamy/polyamory spectrum, how far people will expose themselves for a cause they believe in and the light and dark side of being a hero.

Do you have a question for our readers?

Fabulous question! I would love to know from your readers how important it is for them on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 = not at all, and 10 = extremely important) to learn something from the books they read

How to Fall in Love with Someone YOU Choose. (Why not, if you have a broken man-picker?)

Choose an available compatible guy-friend who doesn't turn you off and rewire your brains for a hot and heavy romance.

1. Get emotional while watching a sad movie.
2. Share a major adrenaline rush.
3. Be competent at something cool, but don't make a big deal out of it.
4. Have him provide food from the hunt (a good restaurant will do).
5. Eyegaze until it doesn't feel weird.
6. Fulfil each other's primary fantasies within reason and without judgment.
7. Sleep together like stacked spoons.

Repeat the above until love and lust click in. Then send your love brain chemicals into overdrive by not seeing each other. That's when things really get cooking.

Read an excerpt:

‘Nip it in the bud and run like hell,’ he read from my notepad after I’d had a rant about my suspected limerence problem. ‘Hard to nip something in the bud when it’s already a forty-metre gum tree.’

‘It’s not a forty-metre gum tree. It’s slightly less than that. And anyway, what about you and Holly? You’re almost as bad as me.’

Holly was my high school classmate, flatmate of two years and soccer team-mate. She was our team’s starting striker and I was sweeper, which pretty well sums up our relationship, despite it being the off season. I was sure Nathan was somewhere on the limerence spectrum when it came to Holly — which was probably the real reason why he’d suggested going back to my place when we were on the phone.

‘Well despite the Ryan-labelled box of condoms in your ensuite cupboard which is a bit obsessive,’ (not fair of him to bring this up. I was half drunk watching The Secret and visualising my goals at the time), ‘I think you’re taking this OCD thing too seriously. If we’re obsessive, then half the people in this bar are as well.’

‘Really?’ I had a quick look around. ‘They don’t look obsessive to me.’

‘No one does from this distance.’

I sighed and looked out the window.

‘So, how would you get over Brian?’ Nathan asked gently.

‘Well, according to the experts,’ I said, putting down my New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and taking the textbook I’d borrowed from the uni library out of my bag, ‘all I have to do is have an intimate relationship with him so I can find his flaws and kick him off the pedestal.’

‘That could be problematic,’ Nathan said. ‘What are your other options?’

‘No contact or total rejection, which isn’t so easy to get unless you try to get it, so the book says.’ I threw the book back in my handbag.

‘I’d go for no contact,’ Nathan said.

‘I can’t. We work for the same company.’

‘That only leaves rejection.’ Nathan’s eyebrows knit together. ‘You’re not going to try to get Brian to reject you, are you?’

‘Of course not! I just have to find a way to stop thinking about him.’

Only I was thinking about him again already.

‘So your only real option is to make a list of his fatal flaws and kick him off the pedestal without being his girlfriend. You have put him on a pedestal, you know.’

I gave Nathan a resigned smile, then tried to list Ryan’s shortcomings in my head. Within seconds, I was back at the wine bar with him, having our third imaginary drink.

‘Tell me your deepest, darkest faults,’ I said as I leant towards him.

‘Only if you tell me yours first’, Ryan replied, making me laugh.

What was I doing? How could I be having another Ryan fantasy already?

‘So you have to do an assignment, right?’ Nathan said, picking up the handout that was in my notepad.

‘Yes.’

‘So you do it on curing love addiction and write twenty pages on Brian’s flaws.’

‘Very funny.’

‘Or maybe you’ll get a lucky break and he’ll be retrenched tomorrow.’

The thought of never seeing Ryan again suddenly sent a chill down my spine, despite it being the one sure way I could get over him.

‘Odyssey won’t retrench him. He makes them too much money,’ I said. ‘But if I survive the restructure, I’ll use my obsessiveness to get over him, not into him. I have to. Otherwise it won’t just be Gran’s ring I’ll be accidently throwing away — it’ll be another year of my life!

Here's an excerpt for your enjoyment:

She moaned as she bit into the brownie. “Oh my God, this is amazing. Orgasm by chocolate, the only way to die.”

After gazing at her mouth for a moment, he shook his head then licked his lips. A sparkle hit those ridiculously blue eyes. “Not the only way to die. Especially if you’re doing it right.”

Pleased to see him emerging from his slump, she teased back, “Doing what right? Baking brownies?” She raised a brow while holding back a grin.

He laughed and rocked back in his chair, which lifted the spindly metal legs off the ground.

“Ooh, I get it. You meant sex. Like you’re good at sex” She waved a hand at his crotch and rolled her eyes. “Kill me by orgasm. Too funny.”

“Listen, little sass-mouth, I’d have no problem proving I’m much more decadent than that brownie. And honey, you’d beg for a double batch.”

Dating After Forty-Eight by Morgan K. Wyatt - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Morgan K Wyatt will be awarding $40 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The world of dating can be both brutal and mysterious. Why do some people marry the first person they meet and live happily ever after? While the rest of us suffer failed relationships, unexpected divorces, and even the death of a spouse that pushes us back into singlehood. Being single can be especially challenging after forty. Most people could use some help, which is the reason behind the book.

Dating after Forty-eight is a collection of well-read blogs that highlights workable dating strategies. Instead of dating being a trial, turn it into a fun adventure and possibly a happy ever after.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Well…maybe I can at least find out if there are likely men in the area. That’s my first thought, as another commercial comes on featuring a smiling couple who met online. Let’s face it. It’s Friday night, and I am alone at home watching a Seinfeld marathon. Besides, the online site is having a free trial period. If I’m quick, I can snag a man without even joining. That’s my plan…along with several thousand plus other people.

According to the US Census, there are more single adults in the United States than married people. With those type of numbers, why be alone on Friday night? I do wonder if they counted the men in prison, mental institutions, and on life support. If so, that actually decreases the numbers, but still I grab the laptop. I know the drill. I’m no online dating novice. Those photos when you initially open the site of people in your city do not live in your city. I haven’t seen them anywhere.

The smooth-faced males with soulful eyes, garbed in tailored clothing would stand out among the grizzled, tired men in NASCAR jackets in my town. I did see them on the promos for various other dating sites. That’s because the smaller sites are interconnected. You might sign up with Hottiesbeus.com and suddenly you are receiving mail and offers from maturehotties.com and singlehotties.com. (I made up the names, but they might become real sites.) The joining fee is only about thirty dollars to join the initial group, but you only receive a few appropriate matches. There is the thought of joining another add-on group to increase your odds. Resist. You pay for the same pool of men. The big companies who can afford commercials offer you more possibilities.

Knowing what I know, I signed up with the granddaddy of dating sites for my free trial. I have ten days—that sounds like a lot, but it isn’t.

What Matters Most by Dianne Maguire - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dianne will be awarding an eCopy of What Matters Most to 3 randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

There is good love and bad love. Good sex and bad sex. And sometimes it's hard to know the difference.

Paediatrician and mother Mia Sandhurst is scraping to keep her marriage together after her husband of 25 years breaks her heart. Finally facing reality, Mia embarks on a series of outlandish new behaviours to make startling discoveries about herself, love and life.

But the lies and betrayal Mia endures are nothing compared to those of her 15 year old patient, Rachel Hooper.

Set on the magical coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, What Matters Most is a story of love, family, misplaced loyalty and how our choices shape who we are.

Enjoy an excerpt:

When her family arrived, Rachel’s condition was stable, but she was still in a coma.

Mia left the treatment room for the waiting area to see Jack in discussion with a short, round woman wearing a brown coat and woollen cap from which locks of red hair fading to grey seemed to be struggling for an escape. Her chin jutted as though she was fighting for her life, and even from a distance Mia could see her blue eyes bulging with anger. Beside her, a dungareed man of medium stature, with the stoop that comes from back neglect, listened with no show of emotion or facial expression, his hands clasped behind his back. Tim, morosely silent but actively listening, held the hand of a boy aged about seven whose round face, topped with a mop of dark hair like his sister’s, moved silently and intently from his mother to Jack as they each spoke.

‘Mr and Mrs Hooper, I’m Dr Sandhurst.’ Mia stepped up and extended her hand first to Peter, who shook it flaccidly and flicked dark, seemingly bottomless eyes towards her for a brief moment.

‘I’m Annie,’ the woman said with a stiff smile and a perfunctory shake of Mia’s hand. ‘And this is Ben, our youngest.’

‘Hello, Ben.’ Mia shook his hand to elicit a wry grin before leading the way towards a room in the treatment area. Jack bid his farewells in a way that made it clear to Mia that he and the family knew each other well.

The moment they entered the small interview room and sat on the trio of mustard vinyl chairs facing the narrow desk, Annie let forth as though she had held back for long enough.

‘This cannot be true, Dr Sandhurst. It is not like Rachel,’ she said, absently watching Ben climb onto Tim’s knee. ‘Yes … she can be unpredictable … Yes, she’s stubborn about simple things like refusing to have a shower … But to her credit she has never followed the crowd and she would never ever drink alcohol … and as for taking drugs, well it’s just ludicrous to even entertain the idea.’ Her blue eyes shone more than would be natural and she swallowed with difficulty.

Gently closing the door, Mia knew she was about to make a highly provocative suggestion, but she was experienced enough to know the reality — a harsh new reality that had to be faced sooner or later by the family. ‘I gather Rachel was on her own in the lounge room for quite a while, once her friend Cassie had gone to bed and before Tim found her in the bathroom,’ she said sitting on the swivel chair behind the desk. ‘It makes me wonder if she deliberately took the alcohol and drugs with the intention of harming herself.’

Annie sprang from her seat like a giant cork. ‘That’s insulting and ridiculous. How dare you even suggest …’ She promptly sat again as though pushing away any semblance of thought about the words she was about to utter.

Mia cast a glance at Peter’s persistently bland expression, now intently aimed at the mottled blue carpet. Then at Tim, who muttered something about bullshit.

‘No, it’s quite feasible actually,’ Mia persisted, one eyebrow arching. ‘Rachel would not be the first troubled teen to overdose on alcohol or drugs because she is overwhelmed by problems. And she wouldn’t be the last. Hopefully, one of our psychologists will get her to talk about it.’

Annie Hooper’s eyes widened. ‘I’d prefer the shrinks left her alone. They cause more harm than good in my opinion.’

Over the following minutes Mia tried to make allowances for the parents’ rigid denial of the possibility that their daughter was deeply troubled. Shock and even the will to protect family dignity may have been factors, but these people stubbornly refused to relent, despite her most determined efforts at convincing them that much care was needed because their daughter could be in grave danger of making a repeat attempt on her life.

‘Mm, it’s all a bit of a mystery,’ Mia said, finally giving up. ‘But we shall know more when Rachel regains consciousness. The good news is that there doesn’t seem to have been any damage done to her heart muscle.’ She stood and a spontaneous sigh escaped her. ‘You can see Rachel very briefly, then I suggest you go home and get some sleep. That way you’ll be fresh for her tomorrow.

Shatter by Courtney Houston - Spotlight and Giveaway

MediaKit_BookCover_ShatterI am going to do something that has never been done before.

My name is Telor Conway, and I am going to destroy Death. Bring her to her knees in front of me.

I don’t know how and I don’t know when.

The only thing I know for certain, is that nothing will come between me and my soul mate ever again.

I’ve been given a second chance at life, a life with Catalina. I’ve been given something worth fighting for.

I will fight for it, for her… for us. Even if it is the last thing I do.

I have thrown the gauntlet.

On your marks.

Get set.

Go.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Telor took my hand and lead me to the couch, sitting down next to me. With two gentle fingers, he titled my chin up so my eyes met his.

“He may look like your brother, he may sound like him and smell like him, but he is not your brother.” He said softly. “I told you once to remember that your brother loved you, but that he was gone now.”

Angry at his indifference, I knocked his hand away and stood in front of him with my hands on my hips, to keep them from shaking.

“He is my brother.” I said through my teeth. “And he needs my help. I can’t leave him with her. I’ll do it with or without your help.”

“If there was anything worth saving, I would help you, there is not.” He stood, the space between us was nonexistent as his hard chest push against mine. “There is nothing Tori could do to force him to act this way, he is doing it on his own free will.”

“You’re wrong.” I said, lowering my eyes to his chest.

“Do you love me?” He asked suddenly. “If you do, please trust me on this. If there was any way to bring your brother back to you, I would do it in a heartbeat because I know it would make you happy.”

Flicker by Courtney Houston - Spotlight and Giveaway

MBB_TourBanner_Flicker copy

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Courtney will be awarding a $5 Amazon to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

MediaKit_BookCover_FlickerMy name is Catalina Franklin. And I should be dead.

When Death called my number, sending one of her Guides to take my soul, she didn't count on one thing. The Guide she sent - He was made for me, and I for him. Pulling me back from the arms of Death, Telor changed my fate - and his. Now we're left with the question of not only how he's still here, but why. Will we get the answers we need? Or will Death find us first? Only time will tell...but ours is quickly running out.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Telor slipped his hand in his shirt pocket and pulled out the ring. “Here, keep this with you at all times.” I shoved it back at him. “No, you keep it.”

“Dammit, Cariad, please, take it,” he said, stopping and pulling me to a stop with him. “Humor me and let me give you the only protection I have to give you.”

“What about you? Why would I take the only protection YOU have for YOURSELF,” I asked. He was insane if he thought I was taking that ring.

“There’s no me after you, Catalina,” he yelled. This was the only time I’ve ever heard him raise his voice. “YOU are my purpose, and I will gladly tear this world apart looking for something that doesn’t exist if it will keep you safe and us together, but for now all I have is this. Please take it, and don’t fight me on it.”

“Do you really have so little faith in us?” I asked as tears threatened to leak from my eyes. He didn’t meet my eyes, and I almost thought he wouldn’t. When he finally did look at me, I wished he hadn’t. All I saw was pain.

“I have all the faith in the world in you,” he said. He didn’t say it, but I was able to read between the lines; he didn’t think that HE could do this.

“I have faith in you,” I said, trying to make him believe in himself the way I did.

“And for that, I am truly sorry,” he said with true regret

A Hard Day's Night by Mia Kerick - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Mia will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

MediaKit_BookCover_AHardDaysNightHigh school senior Kalin (Lennon) Macready knows several facts for certain: John Lennon is his hero. Beaumont Finley Danforth II (Fin) is his best friend. And—this is the complicated one—he feels more for Fin than mere friendship.

For weeks, Lennon pesters Fin, who like Lennon admits to questioning his sexual orientation, for a commitment to spend twenty-four hours together exploring “the gay side of life.” Fin reluctantly agrees. Each boy will seek to answer the daunting question, Am I gay? Lennon pre-plans the day, filling the hours with what he assumes “gay life” is all about: shopping for fashionable clothing, indulging in lavish dessert crepes, boogying to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”, and yes, listening to show tunes.

However, Lennon quickly realizes that in creating his plan he has succumbed to the most common and distorted of gay stereotypes. Can he be gay and not fit them? And more importantly, is it possible that spending one very hard day and night together will help Fin accept that he’s gay, too? If so, maybe Lennon has a shot at winning the heart of the boy of his dreams.

A Hard Day’s Night is an amusing young adult contemporary romance about two boys who seek to discover if they must fulfill stereotypes to be together.

In the end, maybe all you need is love.

Enjoy an excerpt:

I park directly in front of the salon.

“The Best Little Hair House in Westfield?” Fin looks at me incredulously but doesn’t dish out a criticism. My dear friend Fin has great difficulty with that whole “calling it like he sees it” thing.

“I didn’t name the place,” I mutter as I jump out of the Jeep. After shaking his curly blond head a couple of times in what-did-I-get-myself-into disbelief, Fin does the same.

I’ll be sorry to see those pretty curls on the floor of the beauty salon, but we’re gonna endure our mutual makeover, one way or another.

In my opinion, having mutual makeovers spells togetherness as well as exploring our more feminine sides. “Come on. We have both of the salon’s haircutters booked for the next hour.” Then I mumble in a manner designed to be intentionally incoherent, “And we have a makeup artist for the following forty-five minutes....” Fin doesn’t hear this part and I think it’s for the best.

“Daaahlings, you must be Lennon and Fin....” Richard, I assume, since I recognize his sing-song voice from the phone call I made to set up our appointments, greets us at the door, air-kissing me and Fin, on both cheeks. I know immediately that if my goal is to immerse Fin and me in all things homosexual, we are in the right place. I find it hard to tear my eyes off Fin as he checks out the salon. I’ll sum up the salon’s décor like this: rainbow-glitter-velvet-jelly bean-explosion. And I’m pretty sure that Fin, coming from a lifestyle enhanced by the subtle shades of Williams-Sonoma and Restoration Hard- ware, has never laid eyes on anything quite this... this vibrant. And Richard’s lilting voice one more time sings out proudly, “Welcome to the Hair House!”

At this point, Fin, with extremely wide eyes, checks out the slick-haired narrow-eyed man who is going to beautify him. Not that Fin needs any enhancement in that department, whatsoever, because even if I weren’t gay, I’d recognize that Fin is a stunner. “I... um... thank you,” he says and offers his hand, which Richard grasps, lifts dramatically to his lips, and kisses very slowly.

“And I must insist that you call me Chard—all of my dearest friends do,” the stylist utters, a glimmer of hopefulness blatant in his sly, dark eyes.

Fin’s lips move but no sound comes out. He’s probably trying to formulate the words for what he is thinking: Are you kidding me—you call yourself Chard? Hahahaha!! But with no success, as Fin, like I mentioned before, has trouble with calling upside-down black heart shapes with tiny stems what they are—yeah, spades.

Dos Angeles by Michael O'Hara - Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a $20 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Dos Angeles, the first in a franchise of mysteries featuring Paco Moran, puts the multicultural thirty-something ex-LAPD homicide detective turned reluctant private eye on the trail of a beautiful young Latina on the run with ten million dollars in cash. Half Anglo and half Mexican, Moran is a transitional character equally at home working in Beverly Hills or blue collar Boyle Heights, the tough East Los Angeles neighborhood where he was raised by a single mom. In his debut case Paco quickly learns he will be the fall guy if he doesn't track down the young immigrant who allegedly stole a small fortune from a sleazy Hollywood producer secretly laundering money for a notorious drug cartel. Paco's frantic search takes him on a roller-coaster ride through a shadowy place he calls Dos Angeles a city within the city and a virtual country unto itself.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Dante Pirelli thought the timing could not have been better to get out of town and spend a week in Maui at the oceanfront condo he owned on Kaanapali Beach. For days all the local media could talk about was the potentially record-breaking heat about to hit Southern California. Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles were expected to soar above a hundred, and out on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley where Pirelli lived it would probably be ten to fifteen degrees hotter.

An added benefit was that Vyna, his beautiful young trophy wife, was excited about getting away, too. That meant there could be lots of sex on the holiday agenda. Vyna had been suffering with a bad case of the blues lately, but when she was in a good mood she could be a real tiger in bed.

Just as the stretch limousine arrived that would take him and his family to the airport, Pirelli gave a final briefing to Maria Rojas, the young woman he was leaving behind in charge of his sprawling, Tuscan-style estate.

“Remember, always keep ice in the dog’s bowl. And make sure you’re here for the gardeners and pool man. Any problems with anything you got the numbers to call.”

“Yes, sir,” Maria nodded with a nervous smile. Although confident, she could handle everything expected of her she was anxious about being left alone in such a big, fancy house. Still, she was going to be paid double her normal salary and Mr. Pirelli had said she could use any of the home’s resort-like amenities, including an amazing circular pool with a cascading waterfall and thirty-foot water slide.

Six days into her stay Maria’s only real challenge had been coping with the boredom. Outside of taking care of Mrs. Pirelli’s needy French Pug and dealing with the regularly scheduled service people, there had been very little to do. As predicted, the scorching weather the Spanish press was calling Los Días de Infierno had arrived with a vengeance. It was so hot during the day she rarely went outside, and she soon got tired of watching non-stop telenovelas. All the idle time made her realize how much she missed her regular routine at Mr. Pirelli’s film company. She liked how busy it always was and how the hours just seemed to fly by. Work—like prayer—kept her from worrying about her recent troubles.
