The Bulls of War by E. M. Thomas - Interview and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. E.M. Thomas will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

How old were you when you wrote your first story (not book but story) and what was it about?

Around 6 or 7. My second grade curriculum actually required students to write stories every day, which in hindsight is a pretty extraordinary ask of young kids. I always enjoyed it, however; it couldn’t compete with Nintendo or anything like that, but writing was never something I saw as a chore. Handwriting, on the other hand, was not one of my strong suits – I don’t think my legibility has increased since the second grade, now that I think about it.

Who inspired you to become a writer (or what, if not who)?

I’ve thought about that often and can’t really place a finger on it. My mother is a wonderful writer, so she was certainly at least one influence. I won’t say which, but there was a descriptive phrase she used in one of her stories maybe 20 years ago that stuck out in my mind so much that I paid homage to it in The Bulls of War. Beyond individual influences, I’ve always had a love for creating worlds in one form or another. When I was younger it took the form of drawing, but by my 20s, it had fully morphed into writing. The genre of fantasy is the ultimate in world-building possibilities, so it seemed like a perfect fit when I started putting to pen to paper on Bulls.

How old were you when you published your first book and what book was it?

Well, this one’s easy – 34. The Bulls of War is in fact my first publication, soon to be followed by an anthology of short stories and a historical fiction by the name of Fortress of the Sun. As is always the case, I learned an incredible amount through this process, with a checklist of things I’ll do differently next time already a mile long.

You've written many books, did you ever think, back when you were getting started, that you'd be where you are now? Are you one of those people who think 'I'm going to be a star!' and then go out and do it or were you just lucky? *wink*

I haven’t written as many books as I’d like just yet, so I will hold this question in escrow until the time is right. :-) I’ll be back!

What's the weirdest and/or funniest email(s) you've gotten from fans?

Probably the one from an individual who raved about The Bulls of War, quoted and recounted favorite portions of the book, demonstrated a detailed, working knowledge of the plot – then proceeded to cite to other “highlights” which were nowhere to be found in my manuscript. Like different names, different action scenes, different plot resolutions, different… everything. To this day, I’m not sure how that happened.

Tell us about your books, what do you have on the horizon? Any little hints you can give us?

Looking at the series from 30,000 feet, Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones (of which Bulls is Book 1) is similar to George Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series – it’s going to be a multivolume exploration of an ancient land racked with turmoil, rival kingdoms balancing their truces on the edge of a sword, powerful realms beginning their decline from their peak power. At a more personal level, however, it’s a story of friendship, a story of love, a story of war and what it means to the men and women who bear witness to it, what it does to those forced to choose sides.

The horizon is split into basically three parts: first is the release of a short story anthology set in parallel to time in which Bulls takes place, providing for different perspectives of some of the events in the book; second is the release of my historical fiction, Fortress of the Sun (more on that below); and third, of course, is Book 2 of the Andervold series. In other words, exciting times ahead!

If The Bulls of War was made into a movie and/or tv show tomorrow, who would you cast as the main characters?

Great question! For Kyrus, I picture a younger Jason Isaacs or Tim Roth. For Tyghus, a younger Christian Bale or Daniel Day-Lewis; someone more contemporary might be Sam Heughan. Antinax would be well-suited by Anthony Hopkins. Connie Nielsen or Caitriona Balfe should be Tygha; Lena Headey or Susan Sarandon should be Wollia. This is going to be an expensive cast, so I hope the studio will go for my suggestions…

Do you have any plans to branch out into any other genres in the future? If so, what are they?

Indeed, and in fact I’ve already expanded from fantasy to historical fiction with Fortress of the Sun, which is still in the querying stage. Fortress takes place in third century B.C. Greece, centering around the great Battle of Corinth. I’m an ancient history fanatic, so I had a blast writing that as well, though it is a very different process than writing fantasy, as I go into detail on my site.

Beyond historical fiction and fantasy, I have an itch to write a space tale, and I have a few already storyboarded. But for now, that will have to wait.

Do you have a playlist that you use when you write? If so, can you give a few of the songs from it?

My writing environment is incredibly boring – ideally perfect quiet, no TV, no music, nothing. It’s tough enough trying to stay focused with constant internet access on hand, so I really try to limit the distractions in any way possible. On the few occasions where I do listen to music, it’s typically classical – songs with words distract me too much from the project at hand. Seeing a pattern here?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Right this second? I’d say returning to Europe. As I mentioned, I am an ancient history buff, and specifically Ancient Rome and Greece. I’ve been to both locations once, but that really only lets you scratch the surface of the ruins out there. I could spend a month at Pompeii alone.

After (or if) I’ve finished with those ruins and then climbing Europe’s medieval castles, I’d like to venture out to sightsee in Japan and China.

What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Vanilla ice cream whipped Blizzard-style with Oreos and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. If you need a way to regretfully yet deliciously blow through a thousand calories, I beseech you to try that out.

What kind of toppings do you like on your pizza?

Pepperoni and mushroom with lots of crushed red pepper. Extra sauce too, I don’t like dry pizzas. I’m officially hungry now from pondering this question.

As clouds of civil war gather over a dying empire, two friends and generals find themselves on opposite sides of the factional divide. Now, they must sacrifice everything to save themselves from their realm and their realm from itself.

Tyghus kept low to the ground as he headed for a patch of tall grass just on the camp’s edge. He hadn’t a shred of armor on him, only his sword.

His heart quickened as the rider quickly closed, his hooded brown cloak fluttering from his speed. Tyghus was intent on baiting the approach, certain he was safely blurred amongst grassy stalks.

Ten yards. The heavy gallops were loud now. Blade in hand, he sprang to his feet –

“General, no!”

The smell of beignets wafted up and distracted, I lifted the bag and took a deep breath. Whoosh! Fine sugar blew up out of the bag and coated me.

“Shit, honey, you look sweet all over.”

Oh, just great.

Blinking sugar out of my eyes I looked up. And up. He was tall, well over six foot. Midnight-blue eyes rimmed by a deeper blue-black smoldered lazily down at me. “You’re holding the best beignets in the world. You gonna stand there or you going to take a bite?”

“Umm.” Jeez, Katya. Say something.

“Here, let me hold that for you.” He took the coffee from my hand. “Go on, babe. Take a bite. It’ll be the best thing you’ll ever taste.”

Still struck dumb, I did what he asked and lifted a beignet out of the bag and took a big bite. Oh! It was like sinking my teeth into a sweet pillow of ambrosia.

“Good huh?”

I nodded and stared back at him. Then, without uttering a word, I stuffed the rest of the beignet into my mouth. He grinned at me, shaking his head. “Want to wash it down with this?” He held out my coffee.

My fingers brushed against his. Yikes! I couldn’t stop the slight tremor caused by his touch. I took a gulp of coffee - half rich chicory, half hot milk - and finally found my voice. “Would you like one?” I offered the bag of beignets to him.

“Would be like taking candy from a baby,” he grinned. “But don’t worry, I’ve got my own.” He dangled a packet like mine in front of me.

Then we both stood there and smiled at each other while we gorged on sugary donuts. He would reach for my coffee to free my hand. Then after I ate some fluffy yumminess, he’d hand it back to me so I could take a sip. We swallowed the last of our beignets and licked our fingers.

I didn’t even know his name, yet I was more turned on than I had ever been in my life.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

“What makes you think you can just step in and take this nice young lady’s identity?”

Still feeling the shake and rattle of riding for days in a stagecoach, Linnea Powell, disgraced widow, tried to ignore her lunch companion’s question. Impossible. The dark-haired, skinny woman was jerking her thumb at the eatery’s newest waitress.

Linnea leaned in to whisper, “Put your finger down or Mr. Philpott will notice you’re upset.”

Jewel Bellingham did drop her hand, but her mouth flattened with disgust.

They both glanced at the reporter, their fellow stagecoach passenger since leaving the East Texas town of Jefferson—one of several waystations on their journey from Shreveport, Louisiana. The man sat at a table for one and dabbed his mouth with a napkin. Despite his hunger for a shocking story, he always refused to break bread with the women, which suited Linnea just fine.

The prig then wiggled on his chair and raised a forkful of pie as if to smell the contents. One side of his mouth lifted in what appeared to be distaste.

“He could ruin everything,” Linnea said, her tone a hushed yet heartfelt plea.

The newly hired waitress approached. Carrying a large tray of plates, Ermentrude Flanders winked as she breezed by to deliver the noonday meal to a table of four. Just this morning, when the stage pulled into Fort Worth, the pleasant, flaxen-haired girl had abandoned her seat to ask the proprietor to take down the Waitress Required sign.

“I can understand wanting to better oneself,” Jewel remarked, leaning in to whisper, “but I have a hard time reconciling her future.

She could have been a respectable matron. To take a waitress job, on the off chance she can quit if a highfalutin bunch of Fort Worth doctors will allow her to study medicine at their school? Not likely.

And if their relationship is for real, will they even have a future? Because with their enemies several steps ahead of them, one false move could bring disaster for everyone Cass holds dear...and in this game of cat and mouse, no one will leave unscathed.

A grin flashed, and he squeezed the hand he still held. “I thought dogs were supposed to resemble their owners. Nothing uncoordinated about you.”

“Good thing, or I wouldn’t have made it across that ledge.” “Yeah, you would have. Anyway, we’ve arrived.”

They rounded a bend, and the vista opened up to majestic splendor. Below them, the Salmon River sliced through an evergreen bowl studded with patches of early fall color, bright nuggets in a sea of green.

Devin drew in a breath. “Beautiful.”

His gaze held steady on her face. “Without a doubt.” He motioned toward a low rock. “Want to sit for a while?”

“Sure.” She dropped down then slid over to make room for him. “Thanks for bringing me up here. The view is worth those few minutes of nail-biting.”

He leaned back, one elbow brushing hers. “I needed a little peace and quiet away from the group.”

“Funny, I was thinking the same thing earlier.”

“Until I busted in on your alone time?” He gave her a sheepish smile. “Sorry about that.”

“I’m not. You’re restful to be around. Not a lot of chatter. No drama. No whining.”

His grin sent a flutter through her chest before his expression sobered. “You’re the opposite of restful.”

She drew back. “I am?”

He nodded then ran a finger down the length of her arm. “When I’m around you, I spend most of my time thinking about only one thing.”

The heat in his eyes stole her breath. Her response was a mere whisper. “What do you think about?”

“This.”

…Here again, his natural figure crouched beside her in the dank darkness of the cave, watching her in silence as she slept, struggling with cravings which were new to him, both tender and violent, and which he could only really compare to hunger… (from ASMODEUS)

On the cusp of the Great War, an even more pitched battle is waged in the furthest corner of the Nordic highlands, the final chapter of a centuries-old rivalry, pitting a troubled bloodline of thieves, journeyman, and politicians against the last and greatest dragon of the hemisphere, Asmodeus.

Until now, the source of this antagonism has been a single gemstone, the fabled shamir, whose history traces to the coffers of King Solomon. The present clash, however, has been sparked by the emergence of an even more desirable, more defiant, and more powerful force than that.

Inspired by the golden legend of St. Margaret, Brooks Hansen’s Asmodeus is a masterfully woven tapestry of history, myth, and fantasy, in the tradition of J.R.R.Tolkien, Bram Stoker, and C.S. Lewis. By turns a romance, an adventure, and the darkest imaginable Gothic, his tale is also, as seen through the eyes of the maiden Margrét, an unflinching exploration of our divided nature — what makes us beasts, what makes us human, and what makes us divine.

Enjoy an Excerpt

So in she'd go and spend the whole day filling her bowl – that was how she thought of it, and of herself. Whatever there was to taste, she would; whatever there was to touch, she would. Or smell, or hear or understand. Again, she spent most of her time in the library, going from book to book, or jar to jar. She discovered that if she took the jars into the music room and simply put them to her ear, she could hear stories as clearly as if she were reading them to herself. She heard them all, and often if she was so inspired she'd go straight to the dressing room and find whatever she needed – the gown, the tunic, the turban or the suits of armor. She would take up the bows and swords and stand before the mirrors, and the mirrors would reply with villains and muses and nemeses, courtiers, paramours, challengers and fiends. And it wasn't long before she realized the mirrors were not mirrors at all, but frames and thresholds leading into deeper tunnels, dungeons and catacombs. All she had to do was step through and she could slay knaves, dance Orientales, escape dark dungeons. She could be all things: a queen, a maiden, she could be king, scientist, alchemist. Each garment set off another world, another past and future, filled with her in its guise. She could conclude the war; dress the wound; finish out the sentence; remove the head or have her head removed; she could starve or gorge, fly (as she already knew how to do); but swim the deepest oceans too; command, obey, chisel, play, pray, betray; everything a human could, or any beast had ever done, she could do.

Or almost everything.

No wonder, then, that every day should end with sheer exhaustion. Finally she would be so tired she'd lose all track of where she was. How could she know, with all these doors and halls and little corridors she followed? She'd try retracing her steps back on through the picture frames or mirror frames and jars, but sometimes she would simply lie down where she was, right there on the rug or in the nearest chair, and that was fine. That worked too, because no matter where she fell asleep, she always woke up back in her bed again, and in her room, where there would be a new light coming in, a new blanket, and new flowers on the bureau, waiting to greet her.

And he'd have done that too.

In the mystical realm of the Cavern, Akarra is Shardshaper to the quartzian people who inhabit it. Fashioned from quartz and filled with enchanted light, the quartzians are a strong and hearty people. Akarra is no exception. But when destiny intervenes, she must choose between the he-quartz she loves and the life path she lives for. Which shall she choose?

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Akarra knelt expectantly on the floor near the back corner of Yridia’s Cave.

“Pattern matching is most important, dear,” Yridia said.

“I know, Mistress Shardshaper,” Akarra replied, head bowed in deference. “You’ve told me so—many times—but I just don’t see the use of geometry.” She was tired; it had been a long training session and she still wasn’t through.

The small but cozy cave—one in which she had spent many long hours engaged in study—had been hollowed out in the shape of a twelve-sided figure of exquisite design—a dodecahedron, it was called. It at once conveyed a sense of space, mystery, and power. Much like the element it represented: the ether. Each of the twelve faces of the shape formed a perfect pentagon—a five sided figure of further significance and meaning. The pentagon-shaped floor, of course, was made of clouded white quartz; the ceiling, clear. The pentagons on the walls alternated between white and clear. There were no cracks or fissures or blemishes; all the angles and divisions were neat, clean, and precise, thus regulating the temperature of the room perfectly. As Akarra perused the features of the cave, she felt contentment and peace, and her antennae glowed a pale greenish yellow in response. This was like a second home for her. She was the apprentice Shardshaper. One of the most respected members of the tribe.

Akarra watched Yridia move to the center of the pentagon floor and squat down in front of her. Yridai’s yenshi robe billowed out and she produced a crystal of transparent blue quartz in the shape of a perfect tetrahedron. Her Heartshard. A piece of the Heart Crystal itself, the source of the Shardshaper’s power.

Akarra could feel the Shard’s presence.

Private Investigator Meg Cavelli wonders why her traitorous family has trotted out the fatted calf for Seth Truitt, the boy who left her flat eight years ago. Now he’s back, sexier than she remembers, and needs her help. How can Meg accept Seth’s no-strings-attached deal in return for bringing a deranged predator to justice, when their steamy attraction to each other might very well get in the way?

Army Air Corps pilot Seth Truitt needs help to erase his dark-stained past, but soon realizes helping Meg Cavelli solve a dogged criminal case in return for salvaging his military career might be more dangerous than flying P-26 fighters for USAAC. But since Seth has no intention of letting Meg go again, he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe from the twisted, unnatural threat they dubbed “the monster” as kids.

As the mystery unfolds, joining their minds and hearts might be the only way to stay alive.

Well, fan my brow. He was back.

Margaret Cavelli strode to the back door of her small house on Green Street and yanked the door open. Miraculously, she’d gotten out of Bellaluna before she ran smack dab into him. The moron hadn’t had the decency to call or write her in eight years and there he was. Just sashayed back all ginned up in his fancy uniform and thought that was A-Okay. Well, he had another think coming.

She slammed down the book on poisons on her tiny kitchen table, shrugged out of her woolen pea coat, and hung it on the hook next to the door. Luckily, she’d spotted Seth from her old bedroom window at Bellaluna when his taxi pulled up. She made sure he didn’t see her and then snuck down the old servants’ staircase to get to her Coupe while Gwen gave him the feed in the kitchen.

A free meal—and probably his old room back if she knew her father. All the hoo-ha for the prodigal son’s return? Uh-uh. He wouldn’t get squat from her. And if they tried to force her to be nice to him—she’d eighty-six that idea. He could take a powder—again—for all she cared. She wasn’t the forgiving type.

At least, not in this lifetime.

She grabbed the book of poisons and climbed the stairs to her home office and her murder board.

What group did you hang out with in high school?

They were quite a nerdy bunch really. Not the cool kids.

What are you passionate about these days?

Family.

If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?

The publishing world is changing. I’ve chosen to remain independent despite offers from publishers.

Ebook or print? And why?

I’m an ebook fan because I can take multiple books anywhere and change the text size for ease of reading.

What is your favorite scene in this book?

The ending has surprised a few people.

Emma didn’t know how long he hid, silent and unmoving, in the large Victorian wardrobe to the side of her single bed. She didn’t know how long he peered out, salivating and drooling, between the two heavy dark oak doors, and watched, mesmerised, as she slowly drifted into fitful sleep. She didn't know what time he pushed the doors open and crept towards her in the drab grey darkness of the night.

Detective Inspector Gravel finds himself floundering when a local nineteen-year-old university student is abducted and imprisoned by a sadistic serial killer, who has already tortured and killed five young women.

A gripping page-turner of a serial killer thriller packed with suspense. If you like Rachel Abbott, Robert Bryndza and Karin Slaughter, discover John Nicholl’s chilling new thriller today.

Emma didn’t know how long he hid, silent and unmoving, in the large Victorian wardrobe to the side of her single bed. She didn’t know how long he peered, salivating and drooling, between the two heavy dark oak doors and watched, mesmerised, as she slowly drifted into fitful sleep. She didn’t know what time he pushed the doors open and crept towards her in the drab grey darkness of the night. But he did. She knew that he did.

Emma woke with a start, tense, alert, and opened her bleary eyes, telling herself insistently that the dark silhouette slowly approaching her was the nightmare construct of her subconscious mind. But initial anxiety became blind panic as the inky shadow took on an obvious human form that suddenly gained pace and loomed over her. And then a hand, a large hot clammy hand, pulled the bedclothes over her head, clamped her mouth tight shut and silenced her scream before it materialised.

A myriad unwelcome thoughts invaded her troubled mind as he pinned her head to the pillow and raised his free arm high above his head, before closing his fingers tightly, forming his hand into a formidable weapon and bringing it crashing down, again and again and again, with all the force he could muster, rendering her unconscious and bleeding.

She didn’t know how long she remained senseless, or what he did to her while she slept. She didn’t know what time he lifted her from her bed and carried her from her student bedroom, down the creaking wooden staircase and out into the Welsh city street. But he did. She knew that he did.

Behind the Bonehouse by Sally Wright - Interview and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Sally Wright will be awarding copies of several of Sally Wright's books to a randomly drawn U.S. (only) winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What books/authors have influenced your writing?

I think any book that you love, if you're a writer, influences you in some way even if it's not conscious. I loved the Peter Wimsey mysteries when I first read them, and I'm sure I wanted to write a mystery protagonist that I liked as much as Wimsey. He wasn't brash and a braggart. He had troubles from his years in WWI that he'd had to overcome, and he cared for all sorts of people, no matter the class or the educational level. He was what an English gentleman is supposed to be. The plots were clearly clever, but very much of their time, and I wanted to write more realistically.

I loved Ken Follett's war thrillers - The Key To Rebecca (the first line - "The last camel died at noon", if I remember correctly, has always been a favorite) and The Eye Of The Needle. He was a master of suspense, as was Du Maurier in Rebecca, and much else that she wrote. Both created a real sense of place, and Follett worked with the realities of history in a truly informative and creative way. I admire Jean le Carre's Smiley's People and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. His new autobiography is beautifully done.

I love C.S. Lewis' fiction and non-fiction, the clarity of his use of language, his sensory images in the Narnia Chronicles, and the brilliance of his logic. Austen and Tolstoy's grasp of human nature (Lewis' too, now that I think about it) and the complexity of their characterizations. Shakespeare? Who has ever used language better than he, or understood more about people? P.D. James showed me how mystery novels could be excellent literature that took what once had been largely puzzles and created real life characters in beautifully written prose. Dick Francis made me start riding horses when I was thirty-five, and want to write about horses too, and the people who love them.

Tell us something you hate doing and why?

I absolutely hate folding clothes. It's so blasted repetitive, and I'm no earthly good at it. I hang my good clothes neatly enough, but I throw my everyday home rags onto shelves and in drawers with no concern at all. My underwear looks like it was beaten with an egg beater whenever you peek in the drawer.

I do my husband's laundry, along with the socks we both wear with our running shoes (which are part of my uniform at home) and drop the pile in front of his drawers. He very kindly pulls my socks out and tosses them over toward my side, while he folds his T-shirts and underwear neatly and arranges them in his drawers.

I also hate making the bed. I lie down every day for a little while after lunch and read something fun, and it makes no sense to make the bed in the morning and then undo it again. Everything else in the house is neat. My kitchen is unbelievably well organized, but folding . . . no.

Share a funny incident in your life.

I was staying in a country house hotel outside Dunkeld, Scotland working on Pursuit And Persuasion, a Ben Reese archivist/ex-WWII Ranger mystery that became an Edgar Finalist. The house sat on a steep wooded hill above the Tay River Valley, which is flat and wide and beautiful, and I wanted to wander down through the woods to the water, taking pictures on my way. I rely on my photos a lot for my books to help with my sense of setting.

I walked down on a path through the woods and came out onto the bottomland, but couldn't see a way to the river without going through the fenced pasture where one bull and 80 or 90 cows were enjoying the afternoon.

They were at the far left end of the field, and I climbed over the fence, heading toward the right end, then straight toward the river, where I thought I could see an opening in the undergrowth that would lead through to the water.

First one cow started running toward me, I think just out of curiosity. Then three or four more came after them, then twenty or thirty, with the bull joining in and picking up speed. The whole herd was galloping in my direction when I struggled over the far fence with very few feet left between us. Horses I know something about. Cows nothing at all. I doubt that they started by intending me harm, but once they got going, being trampled began to look likely.

I dusted myself off, and headed to the water. And when I was ready to start back, I found an opening half a mile down river where I could scramble up through those woods to the road that would lead me back.

When I stepped into the dining room a few minutes later, where the Scots and the English were all taking tea, the ill-disguised humor on nearly every face made it painfully obvious that the waiters, and waitresses, and nearly every guest, had observed my ignominious escape.

When you are in writer mode, music or no music?

No music. I can't concentrate. I can write when people are talking in doctors' waiting rooms, or in some other public place, but not with music.

Who was your favorite hero or heroine?

If I'm considering fiction, I've certainly always loved Elizabeth in Pride And Prejudice. But even in novels it'll be hard to pick just one. Merlin in the Mary Stewart books. Lymond in Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles. Dick Francis' various heroes, who are all very much the same - quiet, unassuming, extremely competent, ultimately fearless.

In real life, in the twentieth century, I have real respect for Winston Churchill's opposition to the Nazis, Dwight Eisenhower as Allied Commander, Alexander Solzhenitsyn for his courage as a prisoner in the Soviet Gulag, and the excellence of his writing.

It wasn’t until thirty years after the attacks, and the lies, and the intricately orchestrated death, that Jo Grant Munro could bring herself to describe it all in Behind The Bonehouse. Her work as an architect, and the broodmare farm she ran with her uncle, and her husband Alan’s entire future - all hung by a thread in 1964 in the complex Thoroughbred culture of bluegrass Kentucky, where rumor and gossip and the nightly news can destroy a person overnight, just like anywhere else. It was hatred in a self-obsessed soul, fermenting in an equine lab, boiling over and burning what it touched, that drove Jo and Alan to the edge of desperation while they fought through what they faced.

Read an excerpt:

Wednesday, July 3rd, 1963

It was five in the morning, and Alan Munro was alone, again, in the lab at Equine Pharmaceuticals. He’d just looked at the notes in the formulation notebook Carl Seeger, Equine’s lab director, had entered the day before, and he tossed a red lab crayon on his desk with a look of deep disgust. He rubbed his eyes with both hands, and leaned back in his chair—then pushed himself up and limped, slightly, less the longer he walked, to the research corner in the back of the plant.

He’d converted a fifty-four gallon drum into a mixing tank they could use to develop the proper methods for converting a beaker-size experimental batch of his new horse de-wormer paste into an intermediate batch, before they moved to a commercial size tank.

This latest mixture was way too thin, and the solids hadn’t properly dispersed in the methylcellulose, and as Alan read the batch sheet he muttered words he’d almost never used since he’d come home from World War II. At 8:35 Alan walked into the main lab and asked Carl Seeger if he could speak to him for a minute.

Carl was weighing white powder on a double pan balance, and he didn’t look up before he’d slid the powder off one pan into a large glass beaker and replaced the brass weights from the other in their wooden rack. “I’m busy right now, Alan. I should be free in an hour or so.” He spoke calmly and quietly, his thin mouth tucked under a wispy mustache, his pale brown eyebrows pulled down in concentration, half-hiding his small hazel eyes.

“It’s important, Carl.

Read an excerpt:

She walked over to the island and ran her hand across the cold marble top. “How did you end up with the kitchen of my dreams?”

Relief flooded through her when he finally smiled. “It was too big to steal, so I bought it.”

She chuckled.

Brodie pointed to the seat at the island. When she sat down, he continued, “Seriously, when I spotted it, I knew I had to have it.” He opened the cupboard, took out two mugs, and set them on the counter. “It’s really workable. I love eating at the island when I’m not in the living room watching the ocean.”

She gazed over his shoulder at the windows. The mist hung over the sea. He hadn’t acted as if he were happy to see her, but she was hoping the muffins would change his mind. She pushed the box toward him. “For you.”

He turned to faced her. “Guess I should say thanks.”

“Well, open it. If you don’t like it, don’t say thanks.”

He stared at her for a second, sizing up her offering before opening the package. “Muffins.”

“There’s something wrapped in tissue.”

He lifted the white paper from the box and unwrapped the gift. “A key?”

“To the house. I liked your ideas. I want you to understand I trust you.”

He tossed the key into the air and caught it. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. I do trust you. I have nothing to lose by trusting you, but I have everything to gain.”

Five Things You'd Never Guess about Rachel Woods

Here are five things you’d probably never guess about me, Rachel Woods:
,br> 1. After working at Barnes and Noble for a few years, I went through a period where I couldn’t stand to look at books!

2. I am obsessed with cake! I could eat it every day, but I don’t really like to bake!

3. I am one of the few people I know who still watch daytime soap operas. One of my greatest joys is yelling at the characters on The Young and the Restless!

4. The main character in Flawless Danger—Spencer Edwards—is based upon several real life stories of women who actually drugged men and stole their valuables!

5. I like to call my writing “sexy/dangerous”, a version of the romantic suspense/woman in jeopardy genre, in which sexy girls find themselves in dangerous positions!

Trying to rectify the mistake that unleashed his dark past, Sione runs to the rescue of a beautiful woman staying at his resort, saving her from a brutal attack … The sly beauty who doesn’t want a hero is no damsel in distress, considering the suspicious circumstances she seems involved in. He should stay away from the beautiful liar, but something about her makes him want to forget his doubts and do anything—even if it means relying on his violent instincts—for a chance to be with her.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Sighing, Spencer shook her head.

She wanted to explain why she’d decided to “date” Ben. She wanted to tell him she’d stolen from him because she was afraid of his feelings, and even more afraid of her own feelings, afraid she would lose herself if she fell in love with him.

But, would he understand?

 Could she even explain it?

“So, Step Two is get close to the resort owner,” she said, rubbing her eyes, trying not to cry. “And then what? Get into his closet and steal from him?”

“I told you the favor won’t be anything criminal,” Ben said, an edge in his tone. “There’s no law against getting close to someone.”

“Just how close do you want me to get?”

“Close, but not too close,” Ben said. “When it’s all over, you have to be able to walk away, and not look back. You have to be able to turn your back on him, even if he’s bleeding on the floor, begging you for help.”

He seemed to be unable to resist trying to get under her skin, and this time, he’d gone too deep.

Deeper than the knife she’d plunged into his gut.

About the Author:
As a pre-teen, a young Rachel quickly tired of the Sweet Valley High Series and moved on to work by Sidney Sheldon, Jackie Collins and Dominick Dunne, which was just the spark necessary to fuel her love of writing. Her first stories were written on a Brother typewriter during long summer days in Texas, where she always had an extra typewriter ribbon and correction tape handy.

Rachel later studied journalism and graduated from the University of Houston where she published articles in the Daily Cougar. She is a freelance writer and blogger with a penchant for melodrama and a frequent traveler to beach locales. Many of her stories take place on the islands, which she has visited around the world.

Rachel writes complex, multicultural stories centered on strong women in jeopardy, fighting for love and their own lives. When not writing, this read-a-holic can be found listening to audiobooks, reading the Book of Jeremiah, or scouring soap opera blogs. Rachel resides in Houston with her three sock monkeys.

The Second Man by Emelle Gamble - Interview and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Emelle Gamble will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

If someone were writing a story about you, what would your blurb say?

Slow starter. Always had to do it her way. Paid-off with a unique story. And that’s not just commentary about my writing. HA!

Would you tell us a little about your newest release that isn't in the blurb?

THE SECOND MAN is a classic romantic suspense novel, but at its heart it’s a discussion about memory. When my dear mother was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s a decade ago, I had no idea what Alzheimer’s did to a person, other than a vague concept that it damaged your memory. It certainly does that, but I didn’t understand that it destroyed the memory of how to do everything, and how to remember anyone.

In THE SECOND MAN, my heroine, Jill, refers to it as ‘cancer of the personality’. Her mother is suffering as mine did, and I must confess it was somewhat cathartic to deal with this tragedy through a fictional character. My family watched this illness eat away my mom’s memory – all of her memory, not only of her precious love for my dad and her children and friends, but of all the experiences, good and bad, that made her the bubbly, optimistic, funny survivor – that beautiful unique soul she was. My heroine is in the midst of this same experience, and I hope gives readers a little insight as to the toll it takes on everyone who loved a person so afflicted.

Because of my mother’s illness, I got to thinking about love between a man and a woman, and I realized, aside from the chemistry of physical attraction, relationships are completely based on memory – all those little incidents and big dramatic moments when we thrill one another, surprise or disappoint one another by revealing our true selves, those form the foundation of our love for another person. And since I am a deranged thing called a ‘writer’, this insight immediately made me conjure up a story about a woman falling back in love with a man who left her fifteen years ago, and wondering if she could trust her memory about who he was. Or if she would realize that, of course, none of us really are the same people we once were, and none of us are probably the person others remember us to be.

What was your favorite scene to write in this story?

I’m a sucker for a big build-up and the drama of surprise. I loved, loved, loved Jill opening her front door and finding Max on her doorstep. I felt the slap of disbelief and shock, the racing of her heart, the joy, the sexual excitement, followed immediately by doubt, hurt, and anger. It is one of the few scenes I have ever written where the character reacted exactly as I imagine I would. Jill isn’t much like me otherwise, but in how she dealt with that, she’s channeling Emelle. HA!

If you could trade places with one of your characters, who would it be and why?

Never in a million years would I want to, or accept the chance to, change places with anyone. I love my life, warts and all, cannot imagine it without my husband and two children, my glorious gran girls, my dumbass cats, or my struggles and success. I know the question is meant as a fairy-tale ‘what if’ fantasy moment, but I am the superstitious sort, and I never, ever tempt fate with wishing I was someone else. (Okay, maybe I did one time wish I was Angelina Jolie when she first hooked up with Brad Pitt, but you see how that worked out for her! I rest my case.)

Let me hear from you readers, who would you change places with if you could? Remember, you don’t know the inside of anyone’s life, only what you can see from outside.

Jill Farrell’s college reunion is coming up, but she wants no part of it. The man she once loved, Swedish exchange student Max Kallstrom, is rumored to be attending, but that doesn’t tempt her as Max disappeared from her life the night before the graduation, and has never been heard from since.

When her ex-husband, Andrew Denton, knocks on her door and announces he wants to make nice, and, “oh, by the way, one of their class alumni might be a murderer”, Jill’s resolve to avoid the event hardens.

Jill shuts Andrew’s efforts to reconnect down, and tries to put Max out of her mind.

And that’s that, until a second man knocks on her door, and the emotions of a time long ago overtakes her. Max Kallstrom tells Jill she’s the reason he has come to California. He asks her to please let him explain why she hasn’t heard from him for fifteen long years.

She’s willing to listen to what he has to say, but immediately realizes that her memories must guide her through a wrenching and dangerous few days. While her heart remembers a handsome young lover, she and her classmates are all different people now, and the reality of a murdered friend proves she can’t trust everyone.

What’s not so clear is if she should trust anyone . . . especially Max Kallstrom.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Jill stared at her ex.

Andrew was much the same, auburn hair and icy blue eyes, but somehow completely changed from the man she last saw over a decade ago. He wore an expensive, dark suit, like an attorney, and any appearance of youth was now gone. He was lean and intense, the man behind the eyes more complicated than she remembered.

When they were together, he had worn his hair short around his neck and ears. It was longer now, combed straight back and gelled. There was a scar at his right temple, small and flat, and perfectly round.

“Because I can’t think of a single thing we have to talk about,” she finally replied.

“Grudge holding doesn’t become you.” He set the vase on the ground at his feet. “We should talk some things out.”

“No, we shouldn’t. I’m leaving the past where it belongs. Dead and buried.”

“Okay, so we won’t talk about the past. We’ll focus on going forward and celebrating all we have in common.”

“Which is nothing.” Jill swallowed, her mouth dry.

“Not true. We’re alumni from the same college. The same class. And our reunion is in two weeks.”

The reunion.

Twice in one day she was being forced to travel back and time and think about a man and a broken relationship. Although her short marriage to Andrew, four years after they graduated, was not the same thing as her college romance with Max Kallstrom, two reminders in one day that she wasn’t a very good judge of men’s characters was distressing.

About the Author:
Emelle Gamble became a writer at an early age. At six years old, she was bursting with the requisite childhood stories of introspection, and this itch to tell tales evolved into bad teen poetry and tortured short works that, thankfully, never saw the light of day, or an editor’s red pen. She took her first stab at writing a novel in an adult education class in Mobile, Alabama when her kids were in bed for the night. As ‘M.L. Gamble,’ she published several romantic suspense novels with Harlequin Intrigue. She now publishes novels of Ordinary Women in Extraordinary Situations with SoulMate Publishing and Posh Publishing …works ranging from women’s fiction to thrillers and romantic suspense.

Always intrigued by the words ‘what if’, Gamble’s books feature an ordinary woman confronted with an extraordinary situation. Emelle celebrates the adventurous spirit of readers, and hopes each will enjoy the exciting and surprising journeys her characters take.

Emelle lives in suburban Washington D.C. with her hero of thirty years, Philip, and two orange cats, Lucy and Bella. Like all good villains, the cats claim to have their reasons for misbehaving. Her children are happily launched on their own and are both contributing great things to society, their mother’s fondest wish.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

She rose on her toes and pressed her mouth to his. He loved her!

His lips were stiff beneath hers. Then they softened as she continued to kiss him.

He loved her and yet he pulled away.

“Jessie,” he said, his voice choked and strained. “I need to go to work.”

“You mean now?” she asked, deciding that if he wasn’t going to let her kiss his lips, she would move her efforts to his jaw and that crazy pulse beating in his neck.

“Soon,” he croaked.

“How soon?” she asked, sliding her hands down his chest. He had been so diligent in his courting efforts, but enough was enough. There was something between them. She couldn’t say exactly what it was. But he loved her and she was beginning to think that she loved him in return.

Scratch that. She did love him. She had loved him her entire life like a brother, but ever since that afternoon in his truck . . .

He had been thoughtful and angry. Her rock, her nemesis, her savior, and now her husband. What was not to love?

“Fifteen minutes.”

She continued to kiss her way down his neck. How could one man smell so good?

“Half an hour,” he corrected, swooping in to capture her lips with his own. The kiss was searing and curled her toes. She loved every bone-melting minute of it. “Forty-five minutes. I got forty-five minutes before someone comes looking for me.”

She laughed as he captured her lips once again. They could do a lot in forty-five minutes.
