The Chocolatier's Wife: ROMANCE, MAGIC, MYSTERY.... AND CHOCOLATE

A truly original, spellbinding love story, featuring vivid characters in a highly realistic historical setting.

When Tasmin's bethrothed, William, is accused of murder, she gathers her wind sprites and rushes to his home town to investigate. She doesn't have a shred of doubt about his innocence. But as she settles in his chocolate shop, she finds more in store than she bargained for. Facing suspicious townsfolk, gossiping neighbors, and William's own family, who all resent her kind - the sorcerer folk from the North -- she must also learn to tell friend from foe, and fast. For the real killer is still on the loose - and he is intent on ruining William's family at all cost.

The Chocolatier's Ghost: Married to her soul mate, the chocolatier William, Tasmin should not have to worry about anything at all. But when her happily ever after is interrupted by the disappearance of the town’s wise woman, she rushes in to investigate. Faced with dangers, dead bodies, and more mysterious disappearances, Tasmin and William must act fast to save their town and themselves – especially when Tasmin starts to be haunted by a most unwelcome ghost from her past…literally.

The Chocolatier’s Ghost is an enchanting sequel to Cindy Lynn Speer’s bestselling romantic mystery, The Chocolatier’s Wife.

Read an excerpt from THE CHOCOLATIER'S WIFE:

Time was, in the kingdom of Berengeny, that no one picked their spouses. No one courted—not officially, at any rate—and no one married in a moment’s foolish passion. It was the charge of the town Wise Woman, who would fill her spell bowl with clear, pure water; a little salt; and the essence of roses, and rosemary, and sage. Next, she would prick the finger of the newborn child and let his or her blood drip into the potion. If a face showed in the waters, then it was known that the best possible mate (they never said true love, for that was the stuff of foolish fancy) had been born, and the Wise Woman could then tell where the future spouse lived, and arrangements were made.

For the parents of William of the House of Almsley, this process would turn out to be less than pleasant.

The first year that the baby William’s finger was pricked and nothing showed, the Wise Woman said, “Fear not, a wife is often younger than the husband.”

The second, third, and even fifth year she said much the same.

But you see, since the spell was meant to choose the best match—not the true love—of the heart the blood in the bowl belonged to, this did not mean, as years passed, that the boy was special. It meant that he would be impossible to live with.

On his seventh birthday, it seemed everyone had quite forgotten all about visiting the Wise Woman until William, who knew this of long habit to be a major part of his day--along with cake, a new toy, and a new set of clothes--tugged on his mother’s skirt and asked when they were going. She stared at him a long moment, tea cup in hand, before sighing and calling for the carriage. She didn’t even bother to change into formal clothes this time, and the Wise Woman seemed surprised to see them at all. “Well, we might as well try while you’re here,” she said, her voice obviously doubtful.

William obediently held out the ring finger on his left hand and watched as the blood dripped into the bowl. “She has dark brown eyes,” William observed, “and some hair already.” He shrugged, and looked at the two women. “I suppose she’ll do. I’m just glad ‘tis over, and that I can go on with my life.”

“For you, perhaps,” his mother said, thinking of what she would now have to accomplish.

“Do not fret, mother, I shall write a letter to the little girl. Not that she can read it, anyway.” He petted his mother’s arm. He was a sweet boy, but he was always charging forward, never worrying about feelings.

The Wise Woman rolled out an elegantly painted silk map of the kingdom and all its regions, his mother smoothed the fabric across the table, and then the Wise Woman dipped a brass weight into the bowl. Henriette, William’s mother, placed her hands on William’s shoulders as the Wise Woman held the weight, suspended, over the map.

Henriette held her breath, waiting to see where it would land. Andrew, her younger son, had his intended living just down the street, which was quite convenient. At least they knew what they were getting into immediately.

The plumb-bob made huge circles around the map, spinning and spinning as the Wise Woman recited the words over and over. It stopped, stiffly pointing toward the North.

“Tarnia? Not possible, nor even probable. You must try again!”

For once, William’s mother wasn’t being stubbornly demanding. Tarnia, a place of cruel and wild magic, was the last place from whence one would wish a bride. They did not have Wise Women there, for anyone could perform spells. The Hags of the North ate their dead and sent the harsh winter wind to ravage the crops of the people of the South. Five hundred years ago, the North and the South had fought a bitter war over a cause no one could quite remember, only that it had been a brutal thing, and that many had died, and it led to the South losing most of its magic. Though the war was long over and the two supposedly united again, memory lingered. “I have cast it twice.” The Wise Woman chewed her lower lip, but therewas naught else she could do.

“Not Tarnia, please?” Henriette, usually a rather fierce and cold woman, begged.

“I am afraid so.” The Wise Woman began cleaning up; her shoulders set a little lower. “I am sorry.”

William, staring out the window at the children playing outside, couldn’t care less. What did it matter where anyone was from? She was a baby, and babies didn’t cause that much trouble.

“Only you, William,” his mother said, shaking her head. “Why can you not do anything normal?”

This was to be the tenor of most of their conversations throughout their lives.

Her pillow would not stop wiggling. She gritted her teeth, furrowing her brow. Cracking one eye, she found herself staring at flannel. A short distance away, her hand lay sprawled across a row of buttons. As she watched, her hand rose and fell.

Ah, not a pillow, then. James.

She opened her other eye and raised her head a bit, gazing down at their bodies. She was all over him, plastered against his side with her arm across his chest and her leg across his thighs.

She didn’t know what had happened to James’s fastidious blanket wall, but she’d probably had something to do with its demise. She craned around enough to look over her shoulder without relinquishing her hold on her lumberjack pillow.

The blanket was on the floor beside the bed.

Blame It on the Bet by L.E. Rico

Welcome to Mayhem, Minnesota, where the cats wear sweaters, the local priest dispenses dating advice, and you can find your fortune in the bottom of a pie pan.

When her family’s pub is threatened with foreclosure, Hennessy O’Halloran, along with her three sisters, is determined to raise enough money to keep it out of the hands of the L.A. real-estate developer trying to raze it and replace it with a—god forbid!—multiplex theater.

Bryan Truitt always gets what he wants. And what he wants is the sweet corner property on Mayhem’s Main Street where O’Halloran’s Pub sits. But his “quick business” turns into more than he bargains for when he meets the feisty Hennessy. Next thing he knows, he’s betting her he can outlast Mayhem’s punishing winter in time to make the pub his—or he’ll gift it to her for free.

Hennessy knows better than to flirt with the enemy. But suddenly Bryan’s not sure which he wants more…the property or the woman who owns it.

Enjoy an Excerpt

Standing there, looking bedraggled and exhausted, is Bryan Truitt. He’s holding his iPhone up to the door, and I can just make out the tiny image of Peter Gabriel’s album So on the screen. Bryan doesn’t say a word. He doesn’t knock. He doesn’t ring. He just stands there, phone up, waiting for me to hear him and open the door.

I do.

“In your eyes, I see the doorway to a thousand churches…” Peter Gabriel sings just loud enough so as not to bother my neighbors.

“That’s my favorite line,” he says. “The doorway to a thousand churches line…”

“Yeah, that is a pretty amazing image,” I agree, playing along as he pretends this is a perfectly natural situation.

“I get it.”

“What?” I ask, neither of us budging.

“I get what he’s saying. Because I see that when I look into your eyes.”

I stare at him, my breath suddenly caught in my throat.

“You…you do?” I ask, sounding tentative.

He nods.

“I do. And that’s why I’m here.”

“It is?”

Jeez, could I be any lamer?

He nods again.

“Can I come in?”

I step back and hold the door open so he can pass me.

I realize I’m dressed in only a terrycloth robe with my hair swept up in a towel turban. No clothes. No makeup. Not even a pair of slippers.

“Uh… Let me go put something on—”

“No,” he says sharply. The surprise must register on my face because he’s quick to jump in again. “I don’t want to let you out of my sight. Not for a second. I can’t.”

“Bryan…”

He sets his phone down on the breakfast bar and wraps his big, strong hands around my forearms.

“No, Hennessy. I let you go once, and I won’t do it again. Not ever.”

Author Interview with Ginger Black authors of Riverside Lane

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Ginger Black will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour. Now, please welcome the authors to our blog. They've agreed to answer a few questions for us.

Thank you so much for hosting us today. It is a pleasure to be on your lovely blog and we are thrilled at the interest from the US in our quintessentially English novel. Ginger Black is a writing partnership comprising Julia Thum and Gaynor Pengelly. Riverside Lane is our first novel together and we are working on the next in the series.

Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

We didn’t write Riverside Lane to fit a genre, we wrote the story we wanted to write then worked out which genre it fitted. Not the most commercial way to write a novel but it was true to our writing style and the tale we wanted to tell and we felt it led to a better quality of story.

For a long time we called Riverside Lane a ‘village mystery’, then Gaynor discovered the ‘cozy mystery’ genre – a term first coined in the late 20th century when various writers produced work in an attempt to re-create the Golden Age of Detective Fiction[1]- and we realized our novel fits in perfectly.

Wikipedia defines Cozy mysteries, also referred to as "cozies", as a subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community. This could have be blurb on our back cover! Riverside Lane includes a whiff of sex and the suggestion of violence but all treated with a light, teasing touch.

What research is required?

We paced the Thames town paths for miles and spent many, many hours in riverside coffee shops all in the name of ‘research’! We also felt it necessary to eat in some of the wonderful restaurants in the village where Riverside Lane is set. Fortunately, this is Bray-on-Thames, home to some of the most famous restaurants in the world, and we planned to spend many hours pouring over the menu at The Fat Duck and gazing out at the beautiful view from The Waterside Inn (in the name of research of course) but sadly, though Riverside Lane has been a fantastic success on both sides of the Atlantic, our royalties haven’t quite taken us there yet.

Name one thing you learned from your hero or heroine.

“Be sure your sins will find you out!” This applies to all our characters. Every one has a secret about which they must lie and while they may not intend those lies to deceive, they cause confusion, pain and heartache all around. Far better to be honest from the outset. The other one is “Liars need good memories” – so do authors who are creating a web of intrigue around a dozen character’s secrets and lies!

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

Gaynor likes to write away from home – ideally in a place that serves good coffee! I like to write outside, even if I am wrapped up in a blanket (we do live in England after all!) and I need a good view.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

In a writing partnership like ours you really have to be a plotter, so we spend ages making meticulous plans, then start writing and the story and the characters carry it away, take everything over and all our best laid plans go to pot! But though we give the characters their freedom, we keep a tight hold on the narrative spine and a very firm eye on where it is we want the story to end up.

Gaynor Pengelly & Julia Thum – The Ginger Black Writing Partnership

Anything new coming up from you? What?

We are both writing children’s novels on our own and there will be another Ginger Black cozy mystery coming soon. The next one will be set further up the Thames in the village of Cookham which is most famous for being the setting for The Wind in the Willows and the home and frequent subject of the artist Stanley Spencer.

Do you have a question for our readers?

We love to meet readers and particularly enjoy attending book clubs (either locally in real time or often on Facebook) so if you would like to set Riverside Lane for yours please do get in touch with us via Facebook or Twitter. We always want to know which was a reader’s favourite character and which scene made them laugh.

Reading habits are also interesting to us. Do you read in snippets or marathons? In bed? On the train? On a Kindle or do you need a real book?

Thank you so much for having us. Please do get in touch with us via our websites Ginger Black, Julia Thum, Facebook or Twitter with any questions and we will try our best to answer them.

After arranging a house swap with a debonair antiques dealer, a darkly handsome American named Luca Tempesta arrives in a quaint English village. Tempesta, who claims to run a detective agency in Los Angeles, is supposedly on holiday – but the inhabitants of the village are unconvinced.

Yet, as they attempt to solve the mystery of the stranger in their midst, it gradually transpires that there are more than enough secrets to go around in the village itself, harboured by the local MP and his uptight, ambitious wife; the has-been former game show host; the respectable couple with the jailbird son; the hometown journalist, striving for a scoop that will rescue her from debt; and so on. The place is revealed as a labyrinth of deception masquerading as a picture-postcard hamlet; tension begins to mount in between the dinner parties and evenings at the pub, and soon culminates in an unexpected death.

Behind perfect privets and brightly painted front doors, the lives of Riverside Lane’s residents slowly unravel. Tempesta, guarding his secrets with a vengeance, is suddenly threatened with exposure by the elderly religious zealot Ivy Midwinter, whose own past involved keeping professional confidences. When she challenges him in church, she learns that Tempesta will stop at nothing to protect his privacy ...

Set against the exquisite backdrop of a gastronomic village by the Thames, Riverside Lane is a tautly paced page-turner that also gently satirises middle- class English manners: the upstanding denizens of the village watch and whisper behind a mask of English hauteur, whilst their own fragile lives come undone.

Read an excerpt:

Ivy bolted the door behind the journalist. Returning to her desk, she locked the drawer and squeezed her eyes shut. “The blind will see, and those who see will become blind,” she intoned, blinking furiously to dispel the strange dots that had started presenting themselves in her vision. They were becoming more frequent; Ivy knew she should visit an ophthalmologist. She hoped it was not un-Christian, but the thought of being unable to read her beloved sheet music upset her more deeply than any of the memories from her past. The Victorian marble clock, which comforted her hourly with its sweet Handel music, proclaimed that there was just enough time to deliver the cheque to the bank and get back to the Village for Evensong.

Standing at the bus stop with the melodious clock chimes still echoing softly in her head, Ivy caught sight of Luca Tempesta walking through the churchyard. Handel, she thought, had been sent to law school by his father, just like this American. The former had abandoned his studies and blessed mankind with the “Hallelujah” chorus; the latter, according to Ivy’s preliminary investigations, had abandoned his to set up a private-detective firm; then, some years later, he had apparently disappeared from God’s Earth without a trace. Except he had not disappeared. He was here in the Village, living in Clive’s house, next door to Frank, smoking Russian cigarettes. And Ivy Midwinter planned to find out why.

The MacBrides: Logan and RJ by J.L. Petersen

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. J.L. Petersen will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Just like the first book in any series, laying the groundwork that sets up future books takes some thought. I needed to make copious notes to ensure in the future books I remembered the unique details developing about each family member and their role in the family. I also struggled with how I would interweave a possible courtship for Bea, the mother of the MacBride siblings. Hopefully, I can successfully give her a story within her children’s stories.

What inspires you?

I am inspired each day knowing no one knows how long we have on this earth. I know that sounds a little dark but when we lost a friend a few years ago and were with him at the time, I saw that you could literally just walk up the stairs and then be gone that fast. So, I found myself asking what the heck I was waiting for to do things I love. What I love, not what I think others think I should be doing. Casting aside my fear of others judging me one way or another.

I am the leading lady in my own life and plan to enjoy it as much as possible. I go to bed each night thankful for another day doing what I enjoy. That is where I draw my inspiration from.

Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work?

From a works perspective:

Julie Garwood, Catherine Coulter, Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz and Janet Evanovich. Their storytelling is very appealing to me. I like the way they write and inject humor and strength into their characters.

From a “give me courage” perspective:

Newer authors like Kathleen Brooks. Watching them build their libraries and see success in having their stories be well received helped me find the courage to take the risk and put myself out there.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I am currently working on the second of five books in The MacBrides series. It will be Hannah and Ash’s story. Also, I have a desire to go back and give Bette, from Chasing Her Heart, her own story. For fun, I’ve recently taken on a challenge to write a Christmas novella. Hopefully, I can have that ready for this Christmas. The story was a compilation of story concepts a group of my friends gave me one night during a dinner party. I’m trying to incorporate aspects from each person’s thoughts and weave it into a holiday love story. Wish me luck on that one.

Do you ever get writer’s Block? Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Yes! I used to freak out when it would happen thinking I needed to drop the story or just stop writing. But I’ve found that walking away for a few days and doing something else and having some fun allows me to remember the world didn’t end. And when I’m ready I sit down and just start writing. Eventually it moves from hard to type the next word to actually seeing the scene again.

Logan, the eldest of the MacBride clan, is thrilled at his brother Clay’s pending nuptials to Sandy. But when Sandy’s sister RJ arrives at the family’s ranch, Logan’s world is turned upside down. However, the sisters’ shared past has created scars and barriers against love testing Logan’s ability to push aside his need and patience to win RJ’s trust and ultimately her unwavering love.

Read an Excerpt:

Logan studied the woman. He’d bet his favorite horse she thought she was portraying herself as stoic. All he saw was a woman on the verge of breaking. Remorse filled him. He jumped in thinking he knew where the trouble was as he had done with virtually all his siblings since their father died. Now he wasn’t so sure he had approached this situation right. Straightening, he rubbed the back of his neck and tried again.

“Look, I may have jumped the gun a bit. There’s obviously something wrong that has both of you in tears. Can’t I help?”

Frowning at his words, RJ tried to determine if the man was playing her. She’d been burned before by family trying to manipulate her with caring to get what they wanted. Studying him, she captured his image as she would one of her pictures. Studying it for all the nuances not readily seen. Tall, lean with a broad chest, he stood with an ease many would envy. His hair was mostly covered by his cowboy hat, but black locks escaped at the back of his neck. His face was all angles with sharp cheekbones, strong forehead and a nose that looked like it had been broken along the way. His lips were firm and his eyes deep blue.

The eyes held her. There seemed to be sincerity in them but something else was pulling at her. When her mind grasped what that was, she sucked in her breath. Want. And, as if he realized she saw his wanting her, his eyes narrowed and became more intense. She pulled her gaze away quickly, and once again, turned towards the balcony doors. Gathering herself from the shock of his wanting her, she realized her body was tingling. Not good.

“I appreciate the offer, but it’s not something I want to discuss with a stranger.”

Logan was stunned to know she saw his desire for her. It only seemed to heighten his need to grab her and hold tight. When she spoke, he knew he needed a bit of space to process what was happening to him. “I can appreciate that. But don’t be hasty about leaving. Why don’t you join us at the ranch for dinner tonight? If you come about four, you and Sandy can have some private time to talk.”

Real estate mogul Eli Ward needs to keep a low profile on his new project. He’s expecting a fight from the somewhat eclectic folks currently living there. What he doesn’t expect is for that fight to be led by Brooke Worthington, the woman who rocked his world one unforgettable night. The one woman who doesn’t know who he is, which is a good thing. She just sees him as a regular guy. It’s refreshing.

Graphic designer and part-time bartender Brooke Worthington refuses to follow her family’s plan for her. She’s too busy building her artistic career. She doesn’t have time for relationships, either, especially with the super hot Eli, because she has to save the building she lives in with people she thinks of as her real family from some greedy real estate billionaire.

These two have secrets and chemistry that is nothing short of explosive.

Read an excerpt:

“One night.” She stared at a spot over his shoulder, desperate for something to distract her from the overwhelming scent of him, soap and sandalwood and sweat. No dice.

“It was supposed to be one night.”

“Do you believe in fate?”

His warm breath danced across her cheek and tickled her ear.

“Because it seems to be telling us otherwise.”

No, she didn’t. She believed in hard work and perseverance. Why else would she still be banging her head against the wall trying to get a top-drawer publisher interested in her novel?

She went for sarcastic, hoping it would scare him off.

“Maybe it’s telling me you’re a stalker.”

“Who doesn’t know your last name yet somehow found out where you live and rented an apartment in your building?”

She gave a half-hearted shrug. “Could happen.”

“Or it could be when I met you that night at Flotsam and Jetsam I was apartment hunting, and I was as surprised to see you at the tenants’ meeting as you were to see me. Call it a happy coincidence.”

“I don’t believe in coincidence, either.”

“What do you believe in?” His baby blues, mysterious and mesmerizing, bored into hers.

“Luck?”

She broke free from his spellbinding gaze, dragging her eyes down to his awe-inspiring chest and focusing on the fire-engine red “ALL” in the center of his Metallica T-shirt.

“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”

“Then it looks like this is my lucky day.”

“Why is that?”

“Because this is my opportunity to convince you the universe wants us to spend some time together.” He slid a finger under her chin and lifted her face to his. “And I’m prepared to stay right here until you agree.”

Five Things You Might Not Know About Kristina Mathews

I went to modeling school as a teenager but now I only wear makeup at weddings and Romance writers conventions. I almost always wear a hat when I go outdoors. Not a cute, fashionable, girly hat, a baseball cap. I also hate shopping and my fashion sense is more about comfort and practicality than style.

Although I grew up in Lake Tahoe, I didn’t really ski until my youngest son joined the high school ski team last year. His dad is a coach and his older brother arranges his college schedule so he can assist as well. I realized that if I want to see my family in the winter, I have to hit the slopes with them.

My first ever job was as an extra in an Oscar nominated film. I was five. I don’t remember much, other than getting fitted for a costume, eating lunch cafeteria-style at the fairgrounds, and playing on a bus while waiting for filming. I also have never seen the movie, Bound For Glory.

I once performed with Andy Williams at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Several members of the background chorus were performing at their high school choir concert, and they just needed to fill spaces. It was a Christmas show, so I did know the words but I’m sure I didn’t contribute anything to the show with my nearly-silent singing.

I fought sexism on the Little League field by punching my best friend who wouldn’t let me on first base the first time I got a hit in practice. I don’t remember the coach’s reaction, but the boys stopped telling me I should be the team’s cheerleader after that.

The sweetest revenge . . .

He’s the Swift brother who got left behind, the son abandoned by his father. Now Kyle Swift is a man determined to destroy the whitewater rafting empire built by the half-brothers he never knew, the Swift sons who got the life—and the love—he was denied. Seducing Fisher Jones isn’t part of his revenge, but sharing a bed with the beautiful whitewater instructor is the one bright spot in his otherwise dark plan. That is, if he manages not to fall for the sad-eyed beauty . . .

Fearless when it comes to facing even the most daunting river rapids, Fisher never takes chances with her love life—until the night she gets swept away by a sexy stranger. But when her one-night stand unexpectedly shows up in her whitewater class, Fisher faces her greatest challenge yet: keeping her heart safe from a man determined to put an end to the family business—and the life—she holds dear. . .

Read an Excerpt:

When it was his turn, Kyle was determined to make a good impression. On his fellow students, but mostly on his instructor. He wouldn’t be too cautious or too cocky. He would show that he’d been paying attention, soaking in Fisher’s words of encouragement and instruction.

He gave the commands. “Forward paddle. Stop. Left back.”

His crew did exactly as he instructed. The raft was perfectly positioned. Except the current was faster than he anticipated. They were headed straight toward the rock in the middle of the rapid. He used his paddle to make a correction, but he dug in a little too deep and he managed to spin them three hundred sixty degrees around. They hit the rock dead on, and the front of the boat lifted in the air, almost vertical, and everyone went flying into the river.

Well, not everyone. Kyle felt himself being jerked backward and tossed to the floor of the boat like a fish. He scrambled to a sitting position and found Fisher was maneuvering the raft through the rapid.

“I’m sorry. I guess I screwed up.” Kyle couldn’t remember the last time he’d admitted to a mistake. He’d made plenty, but never admitted them. But for some reason, he knew Fisher already knew he was in over his head, and she’d call bullshit if he tried to deny it.

“Help pull the crew back in,” she commanded as they came alongside the swimmers. “We’ll talk about it when everyone can benefit.”

Leia was the closest and Kyle was able to get her aboard; then she helped pull Brett into the raft while Fisher grabbed Nolan.

“Well, that was interesting.” Nolan shook his head and ran his fingers through his wet hair.

“Kyle has just demonstrated the dump truck move.” Somehow, Fisher kept her cool. Made it almost seem normal. “And the important thing is that he was able to account for all the passengers.”

What a loser. Instead of impressing her, he nearly drowned his fellow students.

Sometimes the pursuit of justice becomes personal…

There’s one rule when it comes to the blue wall of silence: never report a fellow officer for mishandling a case. But when a woman’s remains are found in a garden and the investigation seems to be connected to a closed suicide case, Detective Madison Knight may not have a choice. She’s pretty sure that suicide was actually a murder.

To make matters worse, the lead detective on the old case is Madison’s ex-fiancé, and he wants to get back together. The last thing Madison wants to do is lead him on, but for justice to be served, she must risk not only jeopardizing departmental relationships but churning up the attention of an old flame at the same time. Because if she doesn’t, the guilty just may be found innocent.

Read an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Found Innocent (Detective Madison Knight series):

“HE DIDN’T DO IT!”

The hysterical shouting pulled Madison’s attention from her monitor to a woman rushing toward her.

The station was supposed to be quiet today. Sunday. She wasn’t required to be there, and that made it the perfect day to dig into her cold case. She was so close to getting answers.

With one more longing look at her screen, Madison rose from her chair and held up her hands to stop the woman.

“Detective Knight.” She stated this as if they had met before.

Officer Ranson, the female officer who manned the front desk, came up behind them. “Come on—”

Another officer brushed past Ranson and slipped his hands under the woman’s arms. “Let’s go.”

He pulled on her, but she stayed still. Her eyes steadied on Madison.

“Please help me.” She attempted to shake loose from the officer’s grip.

Her frown lines were deep burrows, her eyes were sunken, and the flesh around them was puffy. She appeared to be rough-edged, but there was something desperate about her, and she didn’t seem to be a threat to the lives of anyone here.

“I’ve got this,” Madison said.

“All right, your call.” The male officer let go of the woman, and he and Ranson left.

“I saw your face in the paper.” The woman held up the Stiles Times. “It’s you, isn’t it?” Her lashes were caked with mascara, and she blinked slowly. Madison wondered if the cosmetic had sealed her eyes shut.

Madison passed a glance to the paper. It captured a moment she wished to forget. A day when she had been forced to speak in front of a crowd and to take pride in the job she had done. The thing was, though, a good cop couldn’t care less about the recognition.

The woman sobbed, yet her tears didn’t affect her makeup. “He wouldn’t do this…”

Madison summoned patience. A list of envelope printing companies—which could prove to be a vital link in the chain of evidence against the Russians—would be on her monitor, right now.

She took a deep breath, passed another glance to her computer, and turned back to the woman. “Come with me.”

Madison kept the woman to the side of her. Her first impression was the woman didn’t pose a threat, but she still wasn’t willing to sacrifice her back by leading the way into the room.

Inside, Madison gestured to a chair.

The woman dropped her red bag heavily on the table. It was large enough to serve as a duffel bag. She pulled off her jean jacket, folded it over the back of the chair, and revealed a pink sweater that displayed more cleavage than Madison could ever hope to see on herself. The woman went rooting through the duffel bag and she stuffed a stick of gum in her mouth. She worked at chopping it into a soft, pliable distraction. It snapped in her mouth.

“Let’s start with your name—”

“Vilma with an ‘i.’ Vilma Thorne, well, it would have been. My God, Kev!” She raised her face upward as if calling out to a Greater Being. Her gum chewing paused only momentarily.

“Vilma—” Madison had to tune out the noise and the display of her open-mouth chewing. “Let’s start at the beginning. Why are you here?”

Vilma stuck a finger through one of the large gold hoops dangling from her ears and leaned in.

Madison detected the blend of cheap perfume and cigarettes. Maybe—she inhaled deeper, trying not to be obvious—it wasn’t perfume but whiskey. It was hard to discern. Her eyes appeared normal, except for the abuse of eye makeup. Besides the thick mascara, her lids were weighed with the color purple. Her pupils weren’t dilated or pinpricks.

Still, she didn’t respond to Madison’s question.

“Okay, Vilma, if you need my help, I need you to talk to me.”

Possibly this woman was on a new line of drug that disguised itself behind brilliant colors? Maybe this was a mistake and Madison should have let her get hauled away.

“My family is against what he did. But he didn’t do it!” Her voice rose, tears flowed. She stopped chewing and, sniffling, went rooting in the duffel bag again. She came out with a bunched up tissue and wiped her nose.

Madison’s tolerance level had almost reached its limit. “You keep saying he didn’t do it. Do what?”

A tissue still pinched on the tip of her nose, Vilma said, “He didn’t kill himself…someone killed him.”

Spooning Daisy by Maggie McConnell

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Maggie McConnell will be offering 1) Nordstrom "Daisy" vegan leather clutch, 2) Nordstrom turtle pin, or 3) Rebecca Minkoff star pendant/necklace to 3 randomly drawn winners (US only; international winners will receive a $25 Amazon/BN GC).

Thank you for joining us at It's Raining Books. Why do you write in your genre? What draws you to it?

I write romantic comedy because I love “love,” and love, and the pursuit of love, is often humorous (remember first dates?). Although I’m divorced (that wasn’t very funny), most of my love life has been more comedy than drama, more laughter than tears, more positive than negative. Thank God. If I had the heartache contained in so many romances, I think I’d become a hermit. So, to some extent, I write what I know, but I also write what I think life and love should be—happy.

What research is required?

I’m a stickler for accuracy (and I love detail) so I if I don’t know even the little things, like the interior of a certain make of car that a character might be driving, I find out. For instance, I don’t want my character flicking the key to start the car if the car has a keyless ignition. Most readers may not notice a detail like that, but one might, and if I get it wrong, that sticks in a reader’s mind. I remember reading a romance set in the 1960’s. The writer had a character at the check-out in a grocery store, and the clerk was SCANNING the food. Well, scanners weren’t in use until the mid-1970’s! Those are the kind of details writers should get right.

Fortunately, when it comes to setting (Alaska), I can write from 23 years of experience, although I do occasionally verify my memory, such as sunrise, sunsets, high and low tides, things like that.

Name one thing you learned from your hero/heroine.

From chef Daisy Moon, I learned the different varieties of mushrooms: chanterelle, cremini, morel, portobello, enoki, shitake, oyster, button, porcini, and maltake. (I hope this doesn’t count as 10 things.)

Do you have any odd or interesting writing quirks, habits or superstitions?

I always include this specific phrase in each of my books. “…like a red neon vacancy sign on a deserted midnight highway.”

And I always include animal characters (thank you, James Herriot). Probably not really a quirk, just a love for animals.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

Pantser! I usually have a basic idea of the story I think I want and a beginning first chapter, and go from there. I may know at the end of one chapter what needs to happen in the next chapter, but not necessarily what my characters will do to make that happen. I believe if I can’t predict what’s going to happen—and I’m surprised—my readers will be. I look at plots as I do life. No matter what you plan for tomorrow, you can’t control outside forces that change plans. Judging by the reviews, I think I (happily) surprise the readers.

Look to your right – what’s sitting there?

A wall. But a very nice wall. Wainscoting, with a ferns-and-palms wallpaper on the bottom. Above the wood divider is a framed print that one of my art professors did in 1976. (My undergrad is in art.) Titled “Ode to Pan,” and personalized to me. In fact, the whole wall has various photos (taken by me during a trip to Kenya), and prints (from Alaska) and an old poster that I got in Scotland advertising their sleeper train, “the Night Scotsman.” Thank you for letting me share this.

Anything new coming up from you?

Just finished Embracing Felicity. Yay! This is book 2 in the Otter Bite series. The setting is the same, and we see some of the same supporting characters, but there is a new romance. Environmentalist and shop owner, Felicity Arhnaq is part native (Alutiiq) and her romantic interest is oilman Ian MacIntyre, whom we briefly met in “Spooning Daisy” along with his 10-year-old daughter, Emily. Again, a romantic comedy, right from the start when Ian is attacked by Felicity’s ravens, Orville and Wilbur, and then her eagle steals his shoe. Lots of fun with environmental undertones and a bit of education about St. Augustine for whom an Alaskan volcano was named. (That’s my research showing.)

Do you have a question for our readers?

Yes! How do you decide on the books you read (assuming you don’t know the author)? Does the cover catch your interest? Is it the blurb? The reviews? The first few pages? Someone’s recommendation?

Thank you for this interview and for hosting Spooning Daisy!

Read an Excerpt:

Max cocked his head at her. No siree, Bob. Daisy Moon was not easy. She was like a 1500 piece puzzle, where all the pieces are really tiny, and similar in shape and color, but are nonetheless different, and it would take weeks, maybe even months, just to get the edges put together.

"Don't look so surprised," she said. "I know I'm not exactly laid back. Okay, maybe that's being kind," she responded to Max’s smile. "But I'm an incredible cook. And a really good speller. Not to mention having a humongous vocabulary. I came in fourth in the national spelling bee championship when I was fourteen."

Without meaning to, Max pictured Daisy at fourteen, in a prim white blouse and a demure plaid skirt with her hair tied back in a ribbon, triumphantly spelling words like...concupiscence.

"Do I know what men want, or what?" Now Daisy smiled...at herself.

Taking the cue, Max leaned into her and spoke sincerely, but resisted the urge to cup her hand. "Somewhere there is a man who wants a pretty redhead who's difficult and a great cook with a really humongous vocabulary who can spell...and next time it won't be a cross-dressing felon."

Beautiful Mess by John Herrick

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. John Herrick will be awarding a Kindle version of Beautiful Mess, plus free Kindle versions of entire John Herrick backlist to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

John Herrick, thanks so much for stopping by. How did you get started writing?

Thanks for letting me stop by! As a third grader, after finishing a class assignment one day, I looked over at a friend and asked what she was working on. She said she was writing a short story. It sounded like fun, so I gave it a try. I became a writer that day. I fell in love with storytelling. Later, I fell in love with emotion and character psychology.

What was the inspiration for your book?

Seven years ago, I read a biography about Marilyn Monroe and learned authorities had locked her away in a mental institution, against her will, for a brief period. Questions struck me: How would that trauma change her life? Would it ignite fear or paranoia toward what others would think of her from that point on? That piece of trivia planted the seed for Beautiful Mess.

Then there’s the inspiration for my protagonist, Del Corwyn: For some actors/actresses, an Academy Award nomination or win seems to launch their career into a new, enhanced phase. But others, especially in the supporting actor/actress categories, seem to fade from the forefront in a year or two. I’ve often wondered about that second group of people. What made their situation different from the first group? Do they simply pursue other avenues? Do they pursue those avenues by choice, or just to survive? Did a poor choice for their next project torpedo their career? Or did they lack better options because of weak agent? Del is an Oscar-nominated actor who made an unsuccessful choice for his next project, which dealt a fatal blow to his career. He’s spent the next 40 years facing the consequences of that choice.

So those two fascinations merged in my head to provide the inspiration for Beautiful Mess.

What’s the one genre you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to?

I’m aching to delve into suspense! That was always my goal as an author, but human heart stories have arisen to the surface, probably because character development and emotion seem to be my strongest suits. Meanwhile, I’ve partially developed several suspense concepts. And I do have a short suspense story available, called Hit and Run. Currently, it’s available in standalone form only as a Kindle exclusive. (However, if you’re a physical book reader, it’s included in the paperback version of Beautiful Mess!)

Are there any genres you won’t read or write in? Why?

Horror. It just creeps me out. The farthest I’ve tiptoed into horror is Stephen King’s Under the Dome, and that was more like horror-lite, if anything at all.

What are you up to right now? Do you have any releases planned, or are you still writing?

I have another romantic comedy ready to go, scheduled for late 2018. Beyond that, I’m in the process of landing on the next idea. A combination of research and trial-and-error. It’s important for the concept to resonate with my heart, if possible.

Alright, now for some totally random, fun questions. Favorite color?
Green
Favorite movie?
Moonstruck
Book that inspired you to become an author?
The Firm by John Grisham. With that book, I fell back in love with novels.
You have one superpower. What is it?
Time travel! (That said, a magic wand to make problematic people disappear would also be nice!)
You can have dinner with any 3 people, dead, alive, fictitious, etc. Who are they?
Jesus, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Candy.

Last question: Which of your characters are you most like and how/why?

You saved the toughest question for last! I believe a piece of the author finds its way into the book, whether as a character, or as an aspect of its mind, or maybe its struggle symbolizes one of the author’s struggles. I’m an self-psychoanalytical guy—whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know—so rather than my characters resembling me, I tend to channel my self-analysis into their struggles and they become a symbol for me. When I wrote The Landing, I was frustrated and felt trapped in my career. My protagonist was frustrated and felt trapped by unrequited love. Two completely different struggles, but that character’s struggle became a symbol for me. But if you want to know how bad that personal psychoanalysis can get, if you want a glimpse inside my mind, you’ll find an excellent example with Hunter Carlisle, my main character from Between These Walls. Hunter and I torment ourselves in similar ways.

That’s all from me, thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!

Thank YOU for the chance to spend time with you and your readers!

A fallen star. Four Los Angeles misfits.
And the Marilyn Monroe you only thought you knew.

Del Corwyn is an aging relic. An actor who advanced from errand boy to Academy Award nominee, Del kept company with the elite of Hollywood’s golden era and shared a close friendship with Marilyn Monroe. Today, however, he faces bankruptcy.

Humiliated, Del is forced to downgrade his lifestyle, sell the home he's long cherished, and fade into a history of forgotten legends—unless he can revive his career. All he needs is one last chance. While searching through memorabilia from his beloved past, Del rediscovers a mysterious envelope, dated 1962, containing an original screenplay by Marilyn Monroe—and proof that she named him its legal guardian.

Del surges to the top of Hollywood’s A-list overnight. But the opportunity to reclaim his fame and fortune brings a choice: Is Del willing to sacrifice newfound love, self-respect and his most cherished friendship to achieve his greatest dream?

A story of warmth, humor and honesty, Beautiful Mess follows one man's journey toward love and relevance where he least expects it—and proves coming-of-age isn't just for the young.

Read an excerpt:

“I have an intriguing prospect for a new film,” Del replied as he took a seat. He tapped the manila envelope tucked under his arm, which contained Marilyn’s script.

He could’ve sworn he caught Arnie in the onset of an eye roll brought to a sudden halt.

“What kind of project?”

“A pop-culture type of thing. You could say it has a retro feel to it.”

Arnie sighed. “Del, I realize you like to relive the past—”

“This is a winner, Arnie. I guarantee it.”

“And what does this winning project involve?”

“Marilyn Monroe. It’s a screenplay.”

“With all due respect, isn’t that a bit clichéd? This would need to be an angle no one else has covered. Many people have done films about Marilyn Monroe, not to mention books and memorabilia and everything else under the sun.”

“You don’t understand. This isn’t about Marilyn Monroe.” Del felt a surge of adrenaline and couldn’t contain himself. He leaned forward and, with great pomp, planted the thick package on Arnie’s desk. It landed with a thump. “It’s by Marilyn Monroe.”

Arnie sat open-mouthed as he tried to follow along. His eyes widened in perplexity. “By Marilyn Monroe,” he repeated.

“That’s right.”

“Del, what the hell are you talking about?”

With a lighthearted laugh, Del eased back into the chair. “Last night, I rummaged through some boxes I’d stored away long ago. Hadn’t looked through them in years. Relics from my heyday. Things I’d forgotten I’d saved. And at the bottom of one of those boxes, I found this.”

He patted the envelope, which crinkled at his touch.

“It’s a script, given to me in 1962.” Del caught Arnie’s eye to make sure the man paid full attention. “Written by Marilyn Monroe.”

About the Author:
A self-described “broken Christian,” John Herrick battled depression since childhood. In that context, however, he developed intuition for themes of spiritual journey and the human heart.

Herrick graduated from the University of Missouri—Columbia. Rejected for every writing position he sought, he turned to information technology and fund development, where he cultivated analytical and project management skills that helped shape his novel-writing process. He seized unpaid opportunities writing radio commercial copy and ghostwriting for two nationally syndicated radio preachers.

The Akron Beacon Journal hailed Herrick's From the Dead as “a solid debut novel.” Published in 2010, it became an Amazon bestseller. The Landing, a semifinalist in the inaugural Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest, followed. Publishers Weekly predicted “Herrick will make waves” with his novel Between These Walls.

Herrick's nonfiction book 8 Reasons Your Life Matters introduced him to new readers worldwide. The free e-book surpassed 150,000 downloads and hit #1 on Amazon's Motivational Self-Help and Christian Inspiration bestseller lists. Reader response prompted a trade paperback.

His latest novel, Beautiful Mess, folds the legend of Marilyn Monroe into an ensemble romantic-comedy.

Herrick admits his journey felt disconnected. “It was a challenge but also a growth process,” he acknowledges. “But in retrospect, I can see God's fingerprints all over it.”

Read an excerpt:

The clock ticked loudly in Dr. Carter’s office. Or at least I was more aware of it. This was the same one that sat on the wall behind her desk, an old-fashioned grandfather’s clock that Dr. Carter said was given as a gift to her. I folded my hands in my lap and waited for her to pose the obvious questions.

“After the affair was over, did you feel guilty?” she asked.

“I’ve thought a lot about it,” I said. “I didn’t feel guilty about what happened between Zaiden and me. We had a definite spark between us. He became an addiction, just like the cutting and the pills. It was all too much at once. In a way, the thing I do regret about it were the problems it caused. But we knew what we were doing came with risk.

“I hadn’t given it much consideration, but I had the idea we would quit messing around when Katie got back. I hated thinking about that. It’s hard to quit something that begins to consume your life. The sex between us was too good and I wanted to keep coming back. Once Katie was home, things were more difficult. I’m not even sure what excuses he gave her, but we did sneak off to a motel outside of town a couple times. Once I even came home early to meet up with Zaiden at his place while Katie was at a doctor’s appointment on the other side of town.
