Injured in the line of duty, navy SEAL Travis “Hawk” Hawkins retreats to paradise. But R & R takes a turn when he runs smack into a beautiful blonde who just witnessed a murder. Travis offers to help, only to find himself equally taunted and titillated by irresistible Lila Adrian. Can the wounded warrior protect Lila and take down a deadly crime ring?

Read an Excerpt

The life of a beach bum was getting old.

Grinning a little because, yeah, those had been a great three hours of sleep, Travis headed for his temporary home.

But before he taken ten steps toward the hut, he had his hands full of a hysterical blonde. Her hair flew around him in silken ropes. He felt rather than heard the loud crack as his knee gave out, but the woman continued to grab at him, her fingers clutching his back like he was a lifeline.

Despite her violent shaking and gasping sobs, he knew the only thing keeping him from planting his face in the sand was the woman grabbing at him.

If that wasn’t annoying, he didn’t know what was.

Travis gritted his teeth against the pain and grabbed her right back. He damned well wasn’t letting go until he had his footing. After a few seconds, her continual squirming and wriggling had a different effect on his body than vicious, shooting pain.

Whoa. Now that was a sensation he hadn’t enjoyed in a long time. Too long, he figured, if a panicked woman hell-bent on knocking him on his ass was a turn on.

“Nice to meet you and all,” he said, reaching around to grasp her wrists and unleash himself from her hold. “But I think that’s enough for now.”

“No. No, no, no,” she gasped, her words breathy with terror. “You’ve got to help me.”

“As soon as you let me go.”

But instead of releasing her hold, she tried to burrow deeper.

“Lady, you grab me much harder, you’re going to be inside my skin.”

He managed to break her arm’s lock on his waist, but before he could unwrap himself, she jumped in his arms, shoving him off balance again.

Travis didn’t bother to censor his curses as he struggled to find his balance.

“What the hell is your problem?” he finally snapped, getting a firm grip on her shoulders and pushing her to arm’s length. She shook harder, her hair flying as she looked behind her then back at him.

It was the sexy blonde from earlier that afternoon, he realized. The one he’d flirted with. If this was her follow-up, it was seriously twisted.

And, based on his body’s reaction, it kinda worked.

“They’re after me. Bad men. They saw me. Police. We need the police.”

Seriously? Adjusting his weight onto his left leg, Travis rolled his eyes.

“Get a grip,” he told her.

“Dead,” she gasped, almost sobbing the words. “They killed him. He’s dead.”

The Mage Tales Prequel by Ilana Waters

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Ilana Waters will be awarding a $75 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

From USA Today bestselling author Ilana Waters:

Vampire. Witch. Hero. Monster.

Titus Aurelius is all of these things. Ever since he rose from the ashes of ancient Pompeii, this former Roman general has fought for survival.

A few millennia later, bloodseeker Titus isn’t looking for trouble—just a quick meal. But when his path crosses the witch Abigail’s, that plan gets shot to Hades. They find out the Paranormal Investigation Agency (PIA) is plotting something monstrous—something that involves exploding gas mains, lethal bird-shifters, and sadistic vampire minions.

Will they uncover the PIA’s murderous secret before every supernatural in its path is destroyed?

And what is Titus and Abigail’s connection to the mage who, almost twenty years later, is exiled to a paranormal boarding school? Can this mage solve a mystery concerning a stolen potion and ghostly figure before students—including him—wind up dead?

Together for the first time, the Mage Tales Prequels: Books 0-II are action-packed, edge-of-your-seat suspense stories shot through with a megadose of snark. If you love authors like Kevin Hearne, Lev Grossman, and Ilona Andrews, give these a try! This box set contains one novella and two full-length novels:

Mage Lessons

From Mage Lessons:

It took all I had just to keep the protection spell up. My supply of magic began to run dangerously low.

Miles . . . Pen . . . anyone! If you’ve a heroic rescue in mind, now would be a really good time. My heart hammered against my rib cage. Even with the protection spell, I was covered in sweat. I felt the heat seeping through, burning my mouth, my throat. What little air I could get was so hot, it hurt to breathe.

No one’s coming. The realization hit me like an iceberg dropped into my stomach, despite the heat all around me. No one will get here in time. I’m going to burn to death, just like the witches of old. Now my heart was beating so fast, it felt like one long whir. Futilely, I covered my head with my arms and squeezed my eyes shut.

Oh, God. This is going to hurt so, so bad. At least it’ll be quick. Please, God, let it be quick.

Just as I was sure the fire would claim me, I saw a blinding flash of white. I honestly thought it was because I was about to die. Then, I heard a strange sound. It was faint inside my fiery prison. It took me a moment to recognize the sound as glass shattering. The hourglass had exploded, the way it always did at the end of a game. Outside the window, I saw its brightness light up the nighttime sky. Tournament was over.

And so am I.

About the Author:

Hi! I'm Ilana Waters, USA Today bestselling author of the Mage Tales.

I write urban fantasy for those who like it fast, funny, and fierce. If you're into cross-blended creatures (think witch-vampire hybrids and half-breed mages) and supernatural ass-kicking, I'm all over that. Ditto if your book turn-ons are equal parts creepy and action-packed (think ancient cities and crypts combined with beheadings and bombs).

The Amazing, Unfolding World of Machine Civilization series by Clayton Barnett

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Clayton Barnett will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Politics in the future

On the first hand, the answer is simple: “In the immediate future, your skin will be your uniform.”

On the second hand, allow me to elaborate on that a bit. What is playing out in the US and western Europe right now is a competition between globalists and nationalists. The former believe humans to be nothing more than economic units who can be educated – in a classroom or concentration camp – to be whatever they want; that is, they see politics as their guiding light. The latter view that politics is downstream from culture, and, importantly, culture is downstream from race & biology. Some nations of central Europe, having seen first hand under Soviet occupation where the globalist agenda leads, have already rejected what they see coming out of Brussels and Washington. These are states of the Visegrad Group along with, for so long as their current government holds, Italy as well.

Aside: I have always enjoyed the hypocrisy of the globalists claims versus their actions: for open-borders fanatics who think a Somali is the same as a Swede, they themselves live in gentrified cities that have been cleared of all diversity – outside of those trendy ‘fusion’ restaurants – and in walled communities policed by armed guards all the while sending what few children they have to expensive and exclusive schools.

So, what we have is the American and western European governments importing millions of people will not assimilate because they cannot assimilate. What that has given us now are no-go zones and no-go cities. What it will give us in less than five years is the Yugoslav Civil War of the 1990s played out on a continent-wide arena. In that war, your immediate and extended family will be your platoon and your company, and your increasingly racially attenuated community will be your regiment. And, as I said at the beginning, your skin will be your uniform.

It is not a future I particularly want to see for myself or for my two daughters, but barring the US getting a leader such as an Orban or a Salvini, this is the train wreck we are sleepwalking into.

On the gripping hand, what’s funny is that knowing this, much of my writing and characters contradict it! Let’s take a look… “The Fourth Law” Living in the Republic of Texas, which in its formation experienced massive killings and deportations under the state terror organization ‘ExComm,’ the main character Lily Barrett is an early-twenties nurse who is ethnic Han Chinese. As an outsider and a non-White, she is accorded the status of Resident but not Citizen; she has the protection of the law but no voting or political rights.

“Echoes of Family Lost” On their small farm on the road between Knoxville and Oak Ridge, Leslie Hartmann is the head of his household made up of his Min Chinese wife, Callie, and his mixed-race son, Gary, who, as we find out, has been… modified… “Cursed Hearts” Christopher’s step-cousin – and later love interest – is half-Japanese and half-Polish. She even once reflects that “both of the guys I ever slept with are foreigners… I wonder what that says about me?”

“Saga of Nichole 5, Parts 1 & 2” The political situation comes closer to what I described above: elected Mayor of Portland just before the Breakup begins, multi-mixed race Lee Sanchez Johnson holds onto power through a variety of means, including a cadre of political police who are all non-White. I subvert the trope in having Nichole, who while a Japanese subject “looks like a poster-girl for Irish tourism,” work to make the Mayor’s daughter, a computer engineering grad student, his successor.

THE AMAZING UNFOLDING WORLD OF MACHINE CIVILIZATION SERIES
by Clayton Barnett

A history beginning in our near future, these stories are set in a world where the US dollar has been displaced as the world’s reserve currency, prompting its economic and political collapse, with a few areas able to hold onto civilization.

At the same time, across the Pacific, under a resurgent economy brought about by the implementation of new technology and deregulation, three Japanese companies produce breakthroughs in both artificial intelligence and robotics.  These newly made people exhibit an odd interest in the goings-on of the former United States.

To-date, my chronicling of this interest of theirs has led to stories that populate five novels, which I would like to share with everyone now!

*****
The Fourth Law - In the near future, 23-year-old apprentice nurse Lily Barrett lives in a shattered time.  Following its economic collapse, the US has devolved into a group of a few barely functional smaller states and vast swathes of barbarian badlands.  His sister has been missing for years, and her father, after earning the opprobrium of most of the world for running a state terror organization, presumed dead.

Two things keep her going: her live-in job at a small, Catholic orphanage in the city of Waxahachie, Republic of Texas, and Ai, her odd but dear friend, whom she met online; a young woman who only shows herself to Lily as a rendered CG image.

Troubled by her past, haunted by her name, and facing an uncertain future, Lily seems only a quiet, simple life.  But, that past and her present conspire against her.
*****

Echoes of Family Lost - Alive!  After four years believing her older sister lost and presumed dead in the horrible Breakup of the United States, Lily Barrett gets word from her dear friend, Ai – and Ai’s family of Machine Civilization – that Callie Barrett is very likely alive… but over 900 miles away in Knoxville.

Using the resources of her and Ai’s family, Lily puts together a search party to go find Callie:  old, broken, and burnt Orloff – an expert in surviving in the Badlands, Ai’s little sister, Fausta – her machine mind controlling a Combat Android to protect her friend, all together in a cart pulled by their sturdy pony, Clyde.

It’s almost a thousand miles to go, with something very odd trying to limit their ability to communicate over distance and even to cross bridges.  A chance meeting along the way in Huntsville, former Alabama, wrecks their plans, and puts all of their lives in danger.
*****

Cursed Hearts - Even with San Diego occupied by the Mexican Army, Katarina Sosabowski pursues her MBA at UCSD, and is happy to welcome and put up her visiting step-cousin from Japan, Christopher Dennou, for a night so he can complete his enrollment the following day.

But a minor earthquake brings a major surprise:  Chris’s younger sister, Maya, murders their mother and escapes Neuroi Institute, the research facility that created them.

While Chris and ‘Cat’ grow closer to one another, Maya inexorably crosses an ocean and half a continent to take back her brother, killing anyone who gets in her way.
*****
Friend and Ally - Model 5 is a prototype designed to fit seemlessly into human society.  A meeting in Tokyo derails Nichole’s planned training as she is dispatched to Portland, former Oregon; the last working deep water port on the West Coast of the imploding US.

There, under her cover as a Graduate Engineering Student, she is to do her utmost to nurture the people and politics of the City-State into a Friend and Ally of the Japanese Empire.  But from the first day in her new home, all of Nichole’s plans go awry.

Beset by those who want this small lamp of Western Civilization snuffed out, Nichole must find within herself the courage and ability to protect her new friends, at whatever consequence to herself.
*****

Foes and Rivals - After residing nearly a year in Portland, Nichole’s life seems to finally settle down: with her classes, friends, and lover.  But troubling rumors about secret deals between the City’s master and the savage horsemen to the east reach her ears.

With her own skills augmented by her friends and allies, she sets plans into motion she hopes will thwart those in opposition to her dream of a peaceful future.

Once again denied a quiet, normal life, Nichole is faced to make hard, dangerous choices that will jeopardize her, her friends, and the survival of the City itself.

The Fourth Law

~oooOOOOoooo~

“hooo.....hoowwlll!....”

~oooooOOOOOOooooOOOOOoooooo~

“hah...haaawooooollLL!”

“Lily!”

“LILY! You’re not a wolf! Wake up!”

She groggily sat up from her bed. Huh?

“It’s three in the morning... you need to help your kids!” Ai shouted at her from her phone.

The kids!

She flung the cover aside and pushed her glasses onto her face. Now she could hear the siren. What was it this time? Tornado, airstrike, barbarians... the last was almost a year ago when they lost Texarkana. Wait. She shook her head to try to wake up. This time, she’d an unimpeachable information source.

“Ai. Status.” She said into the darkness.

“A fission weapon was detonated outside San Francisco about ten minutes ago; the weather pattern indicates fallout will travel north of you, into parts of former Kansas and Oklahoma. But, winds do change...”

“Right.” She started pulling her clothes on. “Wake up the Fitzhughs; I’ll be there in a minute.”

She walked from her bedroom through her main room, glancing at the monitors. She suddenly bit hard on her lower lip. On the monitors, Ai stood at attention in a Texas Field Forces uniform. For some unknown reason, she forgot to render her pants. Striped green and white panties? Lily worried about her friend sometimes.

SADIE

Miles set the bowl down and turned to face me. He was wearing a black apron that had red lips all over it and read Kiss the Cook. Underneath the apron were some nicely-fitting jeans and a maroon T-shirt that said something about Gryffindor. “Kiss the Cook, huh? Is that the price for breakfast?”

“No, breakfast is free…but I do accept tips.” He winked, and I shoved a giant strawberry in my mouth to stave off a giggle. Seems I also had a fourteen-year-old girl inside of me who was fighting the horny sixteen-year-old boy for control of my body.

Time to put the ball in his court. “If you plan to cook like this every morning, you should probably just stay for the rest of the week.” It came out sounding more forward than I’d intended. I popped in another grape and held my breath while I chewed. Miles cocked his head to the side, searching my eyes for what felt like minutes. I was starting to feel stupid because I’d just thrown it out there, not bothering with subtlety.

Before I could withdraw my offer, he asked, “Let me get this straight. I can crash your vacation, and the only thing you want in return is breakfast?” His tone held a hint of innuendo, and his mouth tipped up at the corners, making his eyes crinkle.

There’s no way I was reading into that one. I gave him a playful smile and nodded. “Yep. Breakfast is the only fee. Of course, I do accept tips.”

The Smuggler by Nicholas Fillmore

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Nicholas Fillmore will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Five Things You've Probably Never Guessed about Nicholas Fillmore

(1) I used to be an altar boy.

(2) I’m kind of a glutton; once I open a box or bottle it’s pretty much guaranteed I’ll finish it.

(3) I can’t seem to get over the hump.

(4) I suspect I have undiscovered greatness.

(5) The dogs, anyway, know I’m pretty half-assed in general.

When twenty-something post-grad Nick Fillmore discovers the zine he’s been recruited to edit is a front for drug profits, he begins a dangerous flirtation with an international heroin smuggling operation and in a matter of months finds himself on a fast ride he doesn’t know how to get off of.

After a bag goes missing in an airport transit lounge he is summoned to West Africa to take a voodoo oath with Nigerian mafia. Bound to drug boss Alhaji, he returns to Europe to put the job right, but in Chicago O’Hare customs agents “blitz” the plane and a courier is arrested.

Thus begins a harried yearlong effort to elude the Feds, prison and a looming existential dead end…. Smuggler relates the real events behind OITNB.

Read an Excerpt:

Later that afternoon I walked, drunk, through the Musee d’Arte Moderne in Brussels, down a winding white hallway to some inner recess. In a corner, behind glass, a little ventriloquist’s dummy in baggy pants and jacket sat before a brass bell. For minutes on end he just sat there with his feet sticking out in front of him, like he’d been knocked down in the street. Then something seemed to stir inside him and the doll’s torso jerked forward an inch and its metal head—bang! struck the bell producing an unexpectedly bright peal like the bell of a steamship. A little placard read, “Attempt to Raise Hell.” Dennis Oppenheim. American.

A small group waited in anticipation for it to happen again. Just as a couple turned to walk away, bang! the bell clanged again. I stayed for another half hour listening to the intermittent clanging; the little brute kept at it, as if he had a mind of his own—as if, in spite of whatever wind-up mechanism controlled him, he was determined to carry out this errand he alone knew the meaning of.

A sweet, yet steamy new adult romance about a girl who's not ready to fall in love and a boy who isn't ready to let her go.

Beau
She is beautiful, probably the most beautiful girl I've ever seen, but she's damaged.
Her a-hole exboyfriend broke her.
I still want her.
I can show her that all men aren't the same
That I'm different.

Mallory
He's everything I need to stay away from, and I try.
I really do, but he's relentless.
So, I give in and let him have me.
All of me.
I should have known better.

Read an Excerpt:

Sitting up, I look around. The room’s the same as yesterday, although I don’t know why I expected it to be different. Tiptoeing to the door, I peek my head out and listen. Silence. Did he ditch me? Well, I reason, if I have to do the walk of shame I might as well be clean. If by chance he is in the house somewhere, I don’t want to be caught. I scurry to the bathroom, lock the door, and take a shower.

“Morning!” he shouts when I walk out of the bathroom.

In just a towel.

Busted.

His eyes widen, giving my body a once, no, a twice-over. In two long strides, he closes the gap between us. He sucks in a breath, holds it, then lets it out so slowly. It warms my neck, sending goosebumps down my spine. He cups my face, forcing me to look at him. My heart’s racing. His big brown eyes suck me into an abyss I’m not sure I’m ready for.

“I just can’t get over how pretty you are.”

“Uhh.” I look down my nose, only able to see his chest, he’s so close. But it’s better than his face. If I keep looking at that face, I might just let my towel slip. I can’t let him see me naked. For one, I need to wait, put off having sex a little while longer. Secondly, I’m not sure I could handle the rejection if he didn’t try to do something with my naked body. “Thanks.”

Kidnapped, taken to another planet - how much worse can Riley's life get?

The kidnapper is her boyfriend Jothur and Sacral is his home planet. The castle inhabitants are psychic, mainly telepaths, and they are at odds with the Mutes in the forest. The psychics' plan is to discover how Riley blocks her thoughts. This will help them completely eradicate the Mutes who are a mixture of free telepaths and non-telepaths.

Riley seeks help from the Mutes and meets Tynan, their leader. She hopes he will help her escape the tests the telepaths want to do. Instead she discovers the magic of Sacral is dying due to an imposter being on the throne.

Riley and Tynan work together to discover the real king and place him on the throne. Part of the plan relies on Riley returning to the castle to delve for more information. Will she survive or will her mind be torn apart by the tests?

Read an Excerpt

On the far side of the room Riley noticed a large carving on the wall. She crossed the room and examined the two panels, each depicting life on Sacral. At the top of each panel, identical carvings caught her attention. A long-tailed bird flew out of high-reaching flames. The carvings reminded her of a phoenix rising. This did not help her find clothing for her body. Riley looked at the panels again.

I wonder. Could they be doors? It’s a good way to keep them from destroying the beauty of the room.

The panels had no obvious way of opening – no handles, no indents in the appropriate places to provide finger holds. A push and a pull nearly broke her already short nails. The doors remained stubbornly closed.

Tears pricked Riley’s eyes. How could she appear at her best before the king, not to mention Jothur, without any clothes? These had to be doors to a clothes cupboard. There weren’t any other options in this room.

“Think Riley, think. What other ways are there for doors to open?”

Various ideas came to mind and she tried them all to no avail. What had Jothur told her about his planet? ‘…ruled by magic instead of science....’ In desperation she cried out “Open Sesame.” To her surprise the doors swung open to reveal a walk-in closet and dressing room.

He edged nearer the counter. I, or maybe my succubus, decided on a whim I would not be intimidated by his power. I wasn’t sure where my sudden courage came from. He had to have sensed my succubus signature. We weren’t a violent race when we controlled our urges. I’m Queen of Control over here. I’m sure he knows I won’t hurt him. Right?

But why is he here? Something must be wrong.

With every step he took closer, I had a better look at him. His dark hair was in slight disarray and his crystal blue eyes scoured my face. He towered over me in every sense of the word. My stomach dipped.

He and Jolene should go back-to-back so I can get an accurate measure of his height.

I shook away my thoughts of him. Given his disapproving glare, he came here on a mission. Greek god or not, he was still a hunter, and I—

I was a product of evil, aka something he hunts.

“Succubus,” he growled. One little word filled with eons of unabashed hatred. It vibrated through me. All hopes of him wanting a new bathroom paint color vanished. No, this visit wouldn’t be pleasant, not at all.

Perhaps I could seduce him. Hell, he could do me right on the floor of aisle nine next to the light fixtures, if it kept him from killing me. I bit my lip. Hunters weren’t typically susceptible to succubi charms. A failed attempt of Aphrodisia could earn me more problems.

I released a breath. Some buried-deep, natural instinct rolled through me again, and I decided to stand my ground. I stood straighter and barked back, “Hunter.”

Tailwinds Past Florence by Doug Walsh

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Doug Walsh will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

After getting blacklisted from the venture capital industry, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Vaughan will do anything to avoid telling his wife what happened. Even if it means agreeing to her dream of bicycling around the world. Kara, tired of being married to a workaholic, was readying for a divorce. Now, she’s packing bags of a different kind. Together, they pedal away from Seattle, headed east on the open road across America, Europe, and beyond.

Theirs is a decision that reverberates across centuries, shattering a continuum that bound their souls throughout time, and traps Edward in a battle with a past life over an eternal love.

As the miles roll by, and the couple's sordid secrets begin to surface, the couple encounters several men plucked from history, each one a vessel of Edward’s soul in a prior life. Of them, a 19th century art dealer proves dangerous, believing Kara is his ticket back to the past.

Tailwinds Past Florence is a contemporary love story with a magical twist, landing readers in the saddle of a global bicycle adventure.

Read an Excerpt:

Kara woke to warm breath on her face and the sense that the tent had shrunk in the night. It was Edward leaning over her, smiling brightly. She blinked the sleep away and tried remembering where they were as he brushed the hair from her brow and kissed her forehead. His lips glanced her nose then landed tenderly on her mouth, lingering, his eyes closed.

“Happy anniversary, my love.” His face hovered an inch from hers, his breath minty.

Eight days had passed since the incident at the American Legion, six since Kara had ceased giving him the silent treatment. She hadn’t forgiven him, not completely. Rather, she ran out of the energy required to ignore a husband with whom she spent every moment of every day. Unlike at home, where she could retreat to her studio, slamming the door behind her, bicycle touring forced compromise, or at least a ceasefire. A tent was too small a battlefield for open hostilities.

She fought to stifle a yawn as a cowbell clanged in the distance. Closer, the sound of flags snapping in the morning breeze. The fairgrounds, she realized, recalling the colorful pennants atop the wash house. “Happy anniversary to you, too.” She reached between them, tugged at the zipper on her sleeping bag, and peeled the top flap back, an open invitation.

His eyes flickered with flirtatious excitement as he rolled onto his side, his hand on her belly. “I’ve got a surprise. Hurry up and get dressed.”

“Can’t it wait?” Kara grabbed his wrist and pulled him near. It had been too long.

He let out a faint groan, as if the temptation was a test of will against which he had taken an oath. “I’m already dressed. I got up early. But tonight …”

I Am More Than My Hair by Alyscia Cunningham

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Alyscia Cunningham will be awarding a limited edition 2019 calendar for "I Am More Than My Hair" (US only) to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

How did this project begin?

I cut my hair in support of a Big Chop for a non-profit organization and was shocked at the negative responses. In turn I created a project that would capture portraits of women who've experienced hair loss accompanied by their essays about their personal experiences. Then "I Am More Than My Hair" was born.

What do you hope you'll achieve with this project?

There is not a single standard of beauty regardless of our hair, race, size or condition. My goal is to show society that despite the pressure placed on women about hair, without it, we're still beautiful.

Do you think that the book will make people uncomfortable?

Unfortunately, it will and has done so already. The discomfort stems from the fact that the topic of female hair loss is still somewhat taboo. Once we can see a female news reporter, an actress, celebrity or even a teacher who is not only bald but unapologetically bald, then the level of discomfort may decrease. Until then, I will do my part to continue creating platforms to discuss issues that hold dear to us as women. Female hair loss is one of the issues.

Do you *want* to make people uncomfortable?

I believe in the saying "If you're not uncomfortable, you're not growing". If my work makes people feel uncomfortable, I know I'm headed in the right direction.

How did you recruit the women whose portraits are in the book?

I contacted quite a few organizations, related to women's health and alopecia. I shared details about my project and my call for participants. The orgs posted my call on their social media pages and everyone reached out to me to participate.

Please tell us a bit about the film that is the other component of this project.

I Am More Than My Hair, is a two-part project, documentary film and photography book. The soon to be released documentary film features interviews of females, their experience with alopecia and the connection of their emotions to the media's standards of beauty.

I'm raising funds to help complete my documentary film via my fiscal sponsor, Docs In Progress. Anyone interested in supporting can make a tax-deductible donation via my fiscal sponsor - www.docsinprogress.org/hair

From the time we are young, girls are pressured into a set belief of beauty standards. Hair is certainly high on the list and is often labeled as our "crown and glory." Where does this notion fit for a girl with alopecia (the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows; baldness)? This new coffee table book should bring light to the issue.

I Am More Than My Hair: My Outward Appearance Does Not Define Me, is a two-part project, documentary film and coffee table book. The newly published book features 138 portraits of 46 women and the stories of their experience with hair loss, as well as women who cut their hair in solidarity of a loved one.

Pull-Quote:

My friends and family supported me>br>
Story:

On May 24, 2011, I discovered a large mass in my left breast while I was doing my self-check. Later that day, I went to the National Cancer Prevention Institute in Lagos for a breast screening. A nurse screened both my breasts and my cervix and referred me for sonography, which was done at a local scanning center. On June 3, 2011, I had a Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology procedure at Me Cure Health Care Limited to diagnose my condition. I was told that the breast lump was benign and that the left auxiliary lymph node was negative for malignant cells. On June 11, 2011, I had my first lumpectomy at a local medical center.

Barely four months later, I discovered another lump slightly above the previous operation site and had surgery at the same hospital. But this time, I insisted on further medical investigation to know why the cancer recurred. That’s when I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. By April 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage IV carcinoma.

I had withheld the news from my dad because he was hospitalized for paralysis, but with the latest diagnosis, I couldn’t hold the news any longer. I told my dad about it on July 31, 2012 hoping he had gained enough strength to handle the news but, unfortunately for me, he passed on to glory the following day, which was my birthday, August 1, 2012.

My friends and family supported me and, before I knew what was happening, all my friends joined a campaign for me on Twitter tagged “walk against cancer, #savedebbie.” I got the exact amount of money I needed for my treatment in the United States ($55,000), but I had to start chemotherapy right away in Nigeria.

I arrived in the United States in October 2012 and started treatment at Howard University Hospital. I had chemotherapy for 10 months followed by a bilateral mastectomy in October 2013. To the glory of God, I survived Stage IV breast cancer, but I am still fighting bone and liver cancer.

Rest in peace, Debbie: August 1, 1984 – April 1, 2016.

1873 –

Adam Gentry, heir to the celebrated Paradise Stables in Virginia, is haunted by the visions of his lost love. Feeling cursed by fate, he slips deeper into grief, shrouded in a cloud of liquor and depression, and neglects his duties and responsibilities. But when Adam is forced to accept that there’s nothing he can do to change his past, he knows he must move on.

And he accepts his own destiny: that he will never love again.

Emmaline Somerset finds herself in the worst possible position any unmarried woman can be in. She will have to abandon all of her plans, hopes, and dreams for an independence using her own talents. The only viable solution is to move to a distant relative’s home and reinvent herself as a widow with an infant. No one will ever be the wiser.

Adam, now determined to secure the Gentry legacy, plans to save longtime family friend Emmaline from her embarrassment with an offer of marriage. But what Adam didn’t plan on was how his unexpected attraction to her would stir something inside of him, something he's kept locked deep within.

Can love finds its way between two troubled souls, one driven by duty, the other by honor, both determined to find their way home?

Read an Excerpt:

Adam thought that she really did need some rest as it seemed to him she was holding herself upright by sheer will alone. He stood at his place. Everyone turned their heads to him as if he would be giving another toast like Matt had done, making everyone chuckle, and then Jim, whose wishes for them had everyone in the room misty-eyed, including him. But his mother and Mrs. Somerset, his mother-in-law, strange as that sounded, both looked at Emmaline and stood.

“Come along now,” Louise said to Jane and Phillip and Betsy and motioning to Edwin to help her from her chair. “This has been a long day and I am exhausted.”

“Yes. I am as well,” Eleanor said. “And these children have near worn themselves out.”

Everyone drifted to the front hallway, gathering wraps and kissing children. Jim had Nettie’s two in his arms, carrying them outside to their carriage. Adam helped Louise into her seat and kissed her cheek as Edwin gathered the reins and nodded at him.

“See that Emmaline lies down, won’t you, Adam? I’m so worried for her,” Louise said.

“Of course. It’s been a trying week, but I think it was a beautiful and memorable day.”

She nodded and looked at him with watery eyes. “It has. Thank you.”

Matt and Annie were walking home, and he waved at them after kissing the children and thanking them. He went back inside and found Emmaline hurrying to the door.

“Tell mother to wait,” she began and then looked at him, her face going scarlet. “I don’t live there anymore, do I?”

I want to make an impact with my book. Where do I start?

First of all, you rock. Impact is our favorite word at Wise Ink. We have found that authors who see their work as something that can positively impact lives are the ones who find the most success, both personally and professionally. The work you did with setting your goals was the first step in this.

Of course, the word impact carries different meanings, which is why we think it’s wise to first define what impact means for you. Use this space to come up with one or two sentences or bullet points that specifically address the impact you’re hoping to make with your book(s). For example:

I want schools around the country to use my series as a teaching tool in their classrooms.

or

I want recent college graduates to have a tool that will help them navigate finding a job.

or

I want my book to redefine how people view fantasy fiction and give them a completely new reading experience.

As you can probably imagine, the definition of impact is personal and broad, and it is not easily measured. That shouldn’t stop you from thinking about it, however. The impact you want to make will go hand in hand with your marketing efforts, and if you think about your marketing work in terms of impact instead of sales, you are bound to have a more fulfilling publishing experience.

Use this area to think about events, articles, or other ideas that will help you achieve your impact goals (and hopefully sell some books in the process!).

For example:

Create content for Teachers Pay Teachers based on the material in my book.

or

Create a YouTube video highlighting one or two tips from my book about landing a job after college.

or

Host a Reddit AMA.

D'Zia's Dilemma by Keri Kruspe

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Guardians of the Galaxy meets The Princess Bride.

The second book in the trilogy, D’zia’s Dilemma features a disembodied galactic gangster, a snarky spybot, and a sentient, lovesick spaceship. If you like non-stop action, powerful emotions, and sensual aliens, you’ll love the next installment of An Alien Exchange.

A woman betrayed. An alien duke faced with an impossible decision. Can two lovers who long to be together overcome those determined to keep them apart?

Lora Dharma Callahan excitedly agrees to leave Earth to attend “The Exchange” and meet the alien mate of her dreams. Instead of finding true love, she’s forcibly kidnapped and held captive by an alien lunatic who plans to take over the galaxy. He’s going to use her to create a serum that will ultimately enslave every human female on Earth. But no emperor wannabe is going to keep this girl down. Lora will find a way to save not only herself, but her planet as well.

Duke D’zia Yaq E’etu, cousin to the crown prince of Zerin, suspects a malicious plot to overthrow the galactic government. When the opportunity arises to insinuate himself in the suspected traitor’s stronghold, he doesn’t hesitate to use his infiltration skills. While there, he encounters Lora, whom he soon recognizes as his TrueBond. The only problem…she’s imprisoned and scheduled for experiments that will destroy her.

Now D’zia has a hard choice to make. Should he stay and get the proof he needs to prevent a narcissistic megalomaniac from taking over the galactic government…or escape with the only female he can claim as his own?

Read an Excerpt

An eternity passed before Lora’s brain cells decided to come back online. Which wasn’t easy since D’zia had pulled her hips into his hard groin. Holy shamoka, was all of that for her? Wait, what did he say? Something about a JR10?

“D’zia.” She pulled her mouth away from his while her inner nasty girl screamed to keep going. “Don’t, I can’t think when you kiss me.” Her heartbeat was going crazy and it was hard to breathe.

Okay, take in a few deep gulps of air…yeah, now she was calm. Right. She put her hands on the sides of his face to place him farther back from her so she could gaze into his eyes. Feminine pride warmed her as she took in the dazed, unfocused stare he gave back. Lordy, those dual-colored orbs were beyond beautiful, especially dilated in passion. His wet, full lips were tempting, and she’d love to spend eternity bathing in the weight of his intense focus.

His three-fingered hands burrowed under her loose tunic to wrap around her naked waist, his palms massaged her eager skin in heavy strokes.

She jumped when warm oils under his hands caused a path of lightning to cover her skin wherever he caressed. A fleeting scent of spiced licorice teased her nose. She drew in a shuddering breath as she cleared her throat. “D’zia, please, let’s stop and think about this.”
